Dear SDN'ers ....

I am a new member to the forums from Toronto and I just got accepted into the USyd graduate Dentistry program...

Since you probably know......the first 2 years of the program are taken with the medical students, so I think this is a great opportunity to find out here on the forums who is going to Usyd for Medicine or Dentistry...

Anyone?

Cheers...

WoW No one?

I'm aware that usyd is still conducting their local interviews so I'm expecting to hear replies within the next week or two. Who atleast has an interview with usyd for Medicine or Dentistry?

Hey Crallum how's it going.

I'm actually an international student from Canada so I did my interview back in August and got accepted then.

They usually conduct international interviews earlier than the local ones giving enough time for international students to get their student visas.

Good luck bro!

Hi
I got my letter today but alas, I did not get an offer, I am however on the shortlist. I think this is even worse than being rejected. :p I'm in limbo! Does anybody know what happens now? ie/ How long before second round offers come out, and anything else you can think of?
Thanks

When do you plan on heading over there? Have you sorted all the logistics, such as visa, housing, flights, etc, etc...

Still need to get my student Visa before I can make any travel arrangements.... but I'll probably be heading over there around mid January.

As for where I'm staying.......I'm most probably gonna be staying at the Sydney University Village. I figured I live on campus atleast for the first semester or year then move out. I suggest if you wanna apply for the dorms, that you do so as soon as possible and don't wait for the international office to send you information on residence, they take forever. It's first come first serve.

Hey all!!I applied to USYD as an international student and I have a question for y'all. Firstly, I didn't get any kind of acceptance/denial email from them yesterday except one that asked me to return a confirmation of acceptance letter to admissions not to the international student office or something like that so is that any conclusive decision or not??I have since emailed someone but she just said to recheck my email which I have...I feel like I live on msn.com now!!!

Not sure what a confirmation of acceptance is. Did you get and email with the dean's name at the bottom and saying something like.. "I am delighted to offer you a place....."???

Maybe they are still deciding??? not sure.

Hi BVI,

I still haven't received that letter with my student ID either. What I did was call up the Medical Admissions Office and told them I havent received my ID number (which is the case for all international students) and the lady gave it to me over the phone after search my Surname. you will need the ID number to pay tuition fees online, so its a good idea to get it as soon as possible over the phone.

I got an email last week sometime saying that they have mailed an "Adult Vaccination Card" out but I have not yet received it in the mail? Has anyone got that yet so do you think it is still making its way over to Canada. It should have been posted out on Nov 4th.

Gosh there are a few Canadians at Sydney Uni. My tute group this year (of 6), had 4 Canadians!

Do they advertise Australian Med schools in Canada? Are there like sister schools?

Why did you guys choose Australia to do your course?

So at least you know you'll have lots of your fellow countrymen when you're settling into a new city ;)

Hi Karim,

How much have your vaccines cost so far? What do you expect the total bill to come up to once you get all of them?

Also, does anyone know how long a Twinrix vaccination is good for? I got the first 2 doses about 3 years ago before a trip to Tanzania, but I never ended up getting the 3rd and final dose because of time contraints.

Thanks in advance.

Well I've already had most of of the vaccinations taken before but I had to take the Twinrix course, 70$ a shot (x 3). The pneumococcus vaccine also isn' free and might cost about 70$ too. I also had to take the dTpa vaccine since I last took it 10 years ago and that's free.

Hey!!

I see there are a lot of people from Canada and the US starting med at Usyd. I am from Toronto (scarb to be precise) and I am enrolled in the usyd med program for feb 2006. i noticed someone asking about loans. there is a student loan website that was given to me by the int office at usyd when i contacted them- http://www.internationalstudentloan.com/canadian_student/faq.htm

the interests rates are kinda high but if you need the loan in a hurry this might be a useful option. hope this helps. :)

hey,
you might want to get a serology test to see if you have immunity for Hep A&B. if you have immunity you could save yourself the cost of the vaccination. :)

Hey All!,

Has anyone started/completed the vaccines that are required by the USYD Med/Dental schools? If so, can you post up what your received and how much it cost you or if it was free? Also does anyone know if all the vaccines listed in the "NSW Adult Vaccincation Record Card" is needed? Are there any that are not listed on the card but that we need to get?

Just as a refresher, I'll list the vaccines on the card:
-Diphtheria, Tetanus (ADT)
-Diphtheria, Tetanus, Perussis acellular (dTpa)
-Hepatitis B
-Influenze
-Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
-Meningococcal
-Polio
-Pneumococcal
-Varicella (Chickenpox)
-Tuberculin skin test (Mantoux)
-BCG (Bacille Calmette-Guerin)

Also, can we just get the chest X-ray part filled out by the doctor who did the medical exam for the student visa?

-thanks in advance guys!!!

Hey,

i have almost completed all my vaccination requirements. i think you need almost all of them. If you go to the website mentioned on the letter that came with the vaccination card you will find that they require people working in the health care profession to get almost all the vaccinations. you would have been given the ADT, MMR and polio as a child. i think you have to show your canadian vaccination card to prove it. also get your doctor to copy it in you NSW vaccination card. i thik you need to get your dtpa once every five yrs. you have to get hepA/B. you have to get the TB skin test. i dont think they give BCG in canada anymore but you can check with them. if you have had chicken pox before, i thinkthey need a serology test to prove it. if you havent had chicken pox then you need to get the vaccination. i think the flu shot is not necessary because the strains they vaccinate for in canada and australia might be different. the HepatitisA/Bor twinrix is about 70 dollars. you have to pay for the vaccination but not for the shot. my doctor said the pneumococcal is not required anymore. i was given the meningococcal as a child but i dont know if it is necessary.
i think it will be a good idea to get the doctor who did your chest xray to fill out that part of the card and sign it or something unless they are going to make you pay for it.
i hope this helps.

I also had a difficult time with that, due to the fact you can only withdraw $2000 at a time with my bank. I applied for a Visa with a really high line of credit, and did it that way. Try to get a Visa card with rewards. Once you submit your payment you can get the confirmation of enrollment to get the loan.

Hi MSDOC,

I'm not sure what the procedure is like with other banks, but I used RBC Professional Student Line of Credits and they accepted my Offer Letter as proof of enrollement. I didnt seem to have any problems. Check with your bank to see what the can do for you and explain the situation with the representative.

you can try for the federal part of the OSAP. International students are eligible for that part of the gov student loan.
