Hey all

Just wanted to learn a bit more about these two as an option. here are a couple of questions:

1) What are the typical reqs for AU or NZ? MCAT or similar exam? GPA etc

2) are there typically many international slots?

3) Are all the AU schools expecting their form of MCAT? Are they all the same req wise?

4) seems that NZ only has 2 big schools Auk and Otago for medicine, is this true? What are their typical reqs?

5) are all the programs 5-6 years or do they have quicker programs for people with healthcare experience and a degree?

Any information would be helpful. thanks all!

Hi Mike,

A good reference is the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Guide which you can pick up here ...

http://www.acer.edu.au/tests/university/gamsat/documents/GMACAdminGuide2006.pdf

Short answers to your questions are below with more details available in the guide.

1) What are the typical reqs for AU or NZ? MCAT or similar exam? GPA etc

Not sure about NZ, but for AU they are generally GPA, MCAT or GAMSAT, and an interview. Each school varies on how they use/weight the different components.

2) are there typically many international slots?

Yes, probably averages about 30 international spots per school.

3) Are all the AU schools expecting their form of MCAT? Are they all the same req wise?

North Americans can submit an MCAT score in lieu of the AU equivalent (GAMSAT).

4) seems that NZ only has 2 big schools Auk and Otago for medicine, is this true? What are their typical reqs?

I'm not familiar with NZ schools, so I'll leave this for someone else.

5) are all the programs 5-6 years or do they have quicker programs for people with healthcare experience and a degree?

5-6 year programs in AU are for high school grads, and there are 8 universities that offer 4 year programs for university graduates holding a prior degree.

I think you'd have much better luck in Australia.

Auckland is completly undergrad. Otago has just started a grad entry option; but.. (it's still undergrad as well) meaning the grad spots are very few aprox. (1-10) and are usually already set aside for some locals.

There are a bunch of schools in Aus that have grad programs and each of these as AusMed said, take around 30-40 internationals each year. Good Luck!

Although Auckland is completely undergrad, at Auckland you are likely to start from Year 2 (hence 5 years). For first 2 years there's plenty of break, because we're working on the same schedule as the rest of the University. I reckon about 40% of our class has a previous degree or "non-traditionals"

Excellent info!

I decided to fire off an app to Auckland since i figured "Hell why not?" I dont forsee me writing the AU MCAT (i understand all AU schools require them) and I wont be able to write the US MCAT (need o chem and physics) until april of 2007. That being the case I am ruled out of applying to any Aussie schools.

I have decided it is worth it to apply to UK, Ireland and ZA schools for now since I am eligible for entry as i stand currently. If I get any offers then I will have to seriously decide what I want to do. As for USA and AU schools, Ill apply to both in the 2007 year.

Any other suggestions? or Info?

You don't need a different MCAT for australia, Their' version of it is the GAMSAT but if you are an international applicant they accept your MCAT score.
