Thought I'd be the first to start this thread. UNECOM is my first acceptance (and my husband's first choice for location)!

Anyone thinking of what kind of "stuff" we'll need and where to get it?

Skiis.... this ski season is going to be great!

my husband and kids have skis... but I think the snow in Maine can't be as good as the snow in Colorado. We're gonna trade mountains (and I mean 10,000 ft mountains) and thin air for ocean view. :)

Hi Wook!!!

Since I did last years... I did not want to be the thread leader again this year. It is a lot of responsibility... always bumbing.

I figure this year you can have an American (not Canadian) and since from rocky collorado it is all FINE with me. hehehehe.

I applied for US Visa / Diversity Green Card... so now I just keep my fingures crossed. Maybe this time next year, I can be an resident. That would make things so much easier with DO school and residency etc.. etc..

Hey guys congrats, from Ft. Lauderdale, hope you all enjoy this winter  Actually, I wish I was up there right now, this place is hotter than hell! Y'all have fun before school starts, and get ready to study your ass off.

Hello folks. It's nice to see a site just for our class-- I look forward to eventually meeting everyone (sorry Doc 2b--I won't be down your way any time soon).

I'm eager and excited to begin, but nervous at the same time. It seems that I've been working toward this goal for so long....it hasn't yet sunk in that I've actually passed the first big milestone.

I'm curious to learn how my future friends will be spending their next nine months: taking it easy before buckleing down or getting a head start on difficult subjects? Work/School? Travel? Any takers?

BostonDO and ShyRem Congrats on the acceptance.

If you have other interviews... good luck on those as well.

BTW... I will be doing research for the next 9 months or so. Finishing my stuff.
FUNNNN not

Wow, medical school. It almost doesn't seem possible. I have two interviews left, but UNECOM is pretty much my first choice- can't really see myself anywhere else.

Hard to believe everything will start in nine months or so. I'll be spending the time working alot, and taking biochem. Hopefully have two months or so off before classes begin.

Congratulations to everyone. :)

Hey Everyone:
I too was accepted to UNECOM and I immediately accepted the acceptance, as it is my top choice for med school (I ended up turning down 8 more interviews, and a WVSOM acceptance...). I worked up at UNECOM this past summer as a Pharm Fellow under Dr. Ed Bilsky, and I absolutely loved everything about the school--the location, facilities, people, curriculum, research, etc. So congrats to everyone else who has gotten a UNECOM acceptance...it's a great school, and I feel very honored to attend med school there, and continue my research. Post if you plan to attend...I'd like to meet my future classmates!!! So psyched about this...!!

Good luck to you all.

Regards,

Ryan.

Well, I hope you get a great price....with all the work you have planned, it sounds like med school may actually provide you a chance to relax (at least physically).

Boston, it's our goal to get rid of almost all our debt when we sell the house. Still going to have student loans, but it we're hoping to get rid of all but one credit card and still have a little bit to put down on another house. :)

Hi future (and current) UNECOMers,
I'm interviewing at UNECOM shortly, and was wondering what I can reasonably expect from the interview process. I checked out the more recent interview feedbacks on sdn, and it seems like there are two one-on-one interview sessions. Was there anything you wish you knew beforehand while going into the interview?

Congrats to all of you who have been accepted to UNECOM. I'm in my first year and I absolutely love it. I'm so happy that I decided to come here.
See you later!
Re:interview..be yourself, look neat, relax, show your interest for the school.
Also, go see the seals in the marine science building (UNE has a seal rehab program).

ShyRem
10-17-2005, 08:25 AM
Wow. I didn't go see the seals.. didn't even know they were there!

Be yourself. Be honest. My interview was one-on-one with a wonderful older physician who was very honest and open. Suited me well - I am too. Enjoy the day, watch out for acorns on the ground (they're like marbles).

westnile
10-17-2005, 10:53 AM
Thanks for the info about the seals; i'll definitely check out the facility if I'm permitted to. So i guess it looks like I'll be interviewing one-on-one. Did you guys stay with a student or stayed in a hotel? How was the tour of the place?

Hey guys. First let me say congrats to all of you. UNE is a great school. So you all are going to love it I am sure. As for me, I applied to 11 different schools and then found out I wasnt going to get a strong committee letter from my school. This was because I came home early from a fellowship I won because of some major emotional stuff that was happening in my life. But I already had sent in my secondaries to UNE, Nova, and KCOM. So I figured I might as well try to use individual letters and give it a go. Well they just got sent in this past Monday and now I play the waiting game. I know a few current students at UNE now and they love it. So I am really hoping for the best and wishing on a star. Congrats everyone and hopefully I will join you as a member of the class of 2010 soon.

This is a general and broad question, but what do you guys like about UNECOM? Also, does the weather get as bad as I think it does up there?

kelaskov
10-31-2005, 07:49 PM
First of all Congrats on gettinginto UNECOM!!! I'm a first year student and absolutely love it.

Before starting UNECOM we sold almost all of our furniture and large items. Basically, you will only spend 2 years in Biddeford before you go on rotations so downsizing and being prepared to move a lot is a good idea.

As for specifics, definitely purchase your medical equipment at the beginning of the summer and not from the UNECOM book store where you will pay 2-300$ more than you should. Basically, dont buy anything from the bookstore if you can avoid it, it's all marked way up. Our class ran into a huge problem this year regarding medical equipment purchasing.

Hope to see you here next year!

We are currently renting a furnished place and it'sworkingout really well so far. Thought I'd be the first to start this thread. UNECOM is my first acceptance (and my husband's first choice for location)!

Hello, quick question what do they mean by professional rec will my counselor do he's not my acdemic counselor but another type of counselor

ShyRem
11-02-2005, 08:32 PM
I think they mean a boss or supervisor, not your family physician or personal counselor. Just my opinion, but I think if someone is treating you then it is a personal recommendation, not a professional one since you have a personal relationship with them. I tend to think of 'professional' as someone you work with or for.

Sorry to hear about the flu.....How's the house coming?

As for docbill--I agree it has been a little quiet..maybe it's still early. Funny, I always thought once I finally got accepted to med school, I'd be shouting it from the moutain tops. You know, walking the streets of my community banging on doors, randomly calling people, buying air time on the local radio station--telling people that I'm one step closer to my goal. Now that this day has finally arrived, frankly, I'm just kind of tired and in need of a long nap.

hehehe.. yeappp we all feel the same. I knew about my acceptance a year ago. So the novelty is gone. That new car smell is gone. I also had those doughts (medical school.. many years... will I make it) and recovered from them.

But I am still very pleased with my decission to only keep UNECOM offer. The only way I would give that up is if I can't afford. That is the present problem!!!

Shyrem, I was in Montreal for a week (7days) and I came back with a horible flu. The worst in the last 3-5 years. This one gave me bad fevers and cold swets at night. And let me tell you something, I had the flu shot... so it tell you how useless it is again this year. Well at least now I am good to go. Better now then in the freezing winter.

All the best guys and gals

House is coming along. Got the whole downstairs devoid of the hated popcorn ceiling and the bottom half of one half of the room painted (there's a shelf around the room halfway up). Now that tea and toast stay down, I think it's back to painting tomorrow to try and get the downstairs DONE. :)

I detest popcorn ceilings. Trying to match that freaking stuff after doing a repair on the ceiling is a pain in the rump.

Docbill introduces an interesting point about the reality of med school. Anyone in class of 2010 planning on applying for military or NHSC scholarships?

I considered at length applying for the military program....but now I'm choosing to only apply for the NHSC scholar program. Anyone else in this boat? However, with the chances that I'm reading about on other threads (1 in 7) I'm definitely looking for other sources.

Hey guys. I am looking to go through the Army scholarship program. I still have to get in to UNE, a minor detail, but it is deffinitely my number one. Jonb12997, is there anything you think I might be able to do to increase my application at this point? Do you know Janelle Mara? I have talked to her about this whole process and got some good advice from her. I am thinking about contacting James Gaffney about coming to visit and sitting in on a class. I came last spring, the day before your last exam, and got to see the campus and the building, but didnt get to experience the school really. Well, this is long enough. Hope to become a member of the class of 2010. Take care.

Seriously research the Army/Navy/AirF programs before you sign your life away. I thought about applying Navy and met w a recruiter at the beginning of school for a few hours. The program sounded excellent and graduating with no loans sounded great however, the reality of your committment to them is very different than what the recruiter will tell you.

After talking to a number of students who are ex/current military folk, I realized that the recruiter actually blatently lied to me about a number of things.

It may be a good program for you but make sure you get the whole truth about these programs before you sign up and rember that the recruiter gets paid to sign you up (the military med students also get rewards if they get you to sign). I know Janelle and she is in a military program, she is very nice and can give you a lot of advice about those programs.

Sitting in on a day of classes is an excellent idea. Good luck with your application!

Hello-
I am currently trying to decide between UNECOM and PCOM. One of the major things drawing me towards Philadelphia is their integrated curriculum. I was hoping a current UNECOM-er might be able to explain to me (or direct me towards someone who can explain) how UNE organizes their curriculum, you know, and any other reason I should choose UNE over PCOM. Thanks for any help.

Sorry can't advice you for or against PCOM. They are both excellent schools. PCOM prob better rotations and match list and scores on licensing exams. But if you like the school "unecom" you can succeed more so here.

OK! Who's sent in their $500 deposits, and who is getting ready to send it in? As I understand it, we have to send a check, right? And if we send the check by 12/10, they'll get it by 12/15, and we should have until about 2/10 to send in the next $1K deposit amount, correct?

I just really don't wanna screw this one up.....

I'm planning on sending mine around Dec. 7 so that I am sure they'll receive it in time. I think I might send a personal check through certified mail, so I get a receipt and know that they got it, as well as call them!

Hey guys, hope everyone is doing well and you are finding some great buys on your holiday shopping. So my application is complete finally, and I am just waiting now to see if I get an interview. Is there anything I can do to maybe help expedite the process or show that I am really interested? Jonb, Wook, anyone else that is there, would it be worth calling James Gaffney and trying to come visit? Would it be smart to write a letter of intent and my desire to become a member of the UNECOM community? UNE really is THE school I want to go to. I know my stats arent that great but I want to be a doctor more than anything and want to go to UNE above anywhere else. Give me some ideas guys. Thanks a lot. Take care.

Demon, UNE is my top choice for a few reasons. I worked in a hospital in Concord, NH where UNE sent a few of their graduates. I got to meet and talk with these interns and find out why they liked UNE and why they chose to be a DO rather than MD. I also got to shadow a DO who was a FP at the hospital and a graduate of UNE as well. She was awesome and I learned so much from her. I also found it really interesting that she had delivered 4 of the residents babies in the FP residency program. I mean, if these residents, who know medicine, chose her out of all the docs in the hospital then that tells me something. I also have talked with a few students at UNE. These people are amazing people with very interesting lives and past experiences. Above all, they truly care about people, want everyone to succeed and have a deep love for medicine and people. I truly believe that the difference between medicine and research are the people we treat. A strong desire to help patients become well, entirely and completely gets strongly emphasized at UNE. The students care about each other and try to help each other to succeed. They have study groups and people make study guides for others. Additionally, I live close by. I really like the people from New England and the area. I like that at UNE they have a very strong anatomy program, one of the best in the nation. So many ailments derive from the body being "out of wack" and knowing the anatomy and physiology can play a big part in figuring out a plan of attack. UNE just gives me that feeling that I belong there. The location is amazing, right on the ocean, and the community is strong and vibrant. They have strong clinical locations across the northeast one being the same place UMASS med sends their students for clinicals and UMASS is ranked 4th in primary care in the nation. I know I will get a great education there and will enjoy my time there. Now, I just hope I get in. Hope this helps.

Dear Future UNECOM grads,

This is my first post in a few years. I am a gradute of UNECOM (2003) and am finishing my internal medicine residency in a few short months. Just wanted you all to know that it was great to read all your posts. You seem like an ethusiastic bunch and UNECOM is lucky to have a new crop of dedicated folks! Reading your post brought back a lot of memories. I can remember being so excited and nervous at the same time. My advice is to relax and enjoy your time before medical school. Once at UNECOM work hard and play hard. I made such great friends at UNECOM. It truly is a great place to take the first steps toward :) becoming a doctor. You will graduate UNECOM with the knowledge and skills to be an excellent physician. As with anything in life you get out what you put in. Enjoy your first steps!

I feel that I will get the same thing out of attending UNE as you did. At least I hope so. BTW, where did you match in IM. In Maine or outside? ACGME or AOA match? The only reason I ask, is because I was told that your med school is more or less the same across the country (unless you go top 20). But your residency is what will determine how well you are trained. Is this true??

Certified? My letter didn't come certified, but it darn near beat me home after my interview. On another note, it seems UNE's adcom must be meeting on the last day of each month since many folks are getting letters the first week or so of each month. Anyone get accepted in the middle or end of a month?

I matched at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, NY. Bassett is one of UNECOM core sites for 3rd year rotations. I will be staying on for cheif resident next year and then off to an endocrinology fellowship (I hope..I am interviewing for positions now). Most of the material taught in medical is the same. Some places have better prof etc, but in general the information is similar. One advantage to a larger, university based school is the exposure to clinical medicine through a teaching hospital. Your 3rd and 4th year rotations are important. However, your residency is where you will truly learn to be a doctor and it is important to try and receive the best training possible. As with most things you need to put forth the effort and learn. People choose a residency for a variety of reasons. Just work hard and think ahead and you will be fine!

I matched at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, NY. Bassett is one of UNECOM core sites for 3rd year rotations. Thanks for the info. Bassett looks good. A nice mix of MD and DO in their programs. Unecom has good representation.

Good luck on your fellowship application.

Hey all. I just got an email from Lisa offering me an interview for January 24th. I got back from the gym, checked my email and ran and my house jumping up and down. Bad idea considering how sore I was. I am so excited. UNE is my top choice by far. Any advice you can offer me on what I might expect during the interview? My advisor sent me a few websites to check out about current topics in healthcare including medicare and malpractice. Anything else you guys might be able to offer up? Thanks a lot and hope to soon become a member of the class of 2010.

Redwings congrats on getting an interview. My suggestion is be yourself and read up on the previous interview questions. Don't be overly prepared or nervous. My experience was laid back and not stressful at all.

Good Luck... the down side is that you have to wait over a month for the interview.

Redwings, I'll tell you how my interview day went. I don't know how others were, but here's my day:

Lisa sent me a parking pass by email so I could park in the general parking lots. I arrived early and walked around the campus, poked in the library and in some buildings. Walked around. Visited the beach. Nice campus (but watch out for acorns in the fall! :) ) Sat in the designated room (in your letter) and waited for the rest of the interviewees. After the other two showed up (yes, only three of us), A short presentation by admissions and the two student guides. One of my guides was pretty geeky but very friendly and happy to be at UNE. The other was getting a cold or something, so she was a bit lower key, but still very nice. They were honest, open, and answered any questions we had.

We then went to the nearby commissary and got sandwiches and drinks. UNE picked up the tab for those - simple fare, but hearty. Wrapped sandwiches, beverages, cookies, chips, bagels were all available. Our inteviewer came and got us one at a time.. meanwhile other UNE students were milling about, some came and sat down at the table and asked if we had any questions. Volunteered a lot of information that we hadn't heard before. One guy skipped class to sit and talk with us.

My turn for interview. Although it was listed as having three interviewers, two didn't make it, and I had one older gentleman. He was very direct, very candid, and very tough. A consummate questioner. I didn't notice any papers in front of him.. and he knew my file inside and out. I mean, he remembered things that I barely touched on in my application... asked me about my middle name (it's unique). Asked me why I took and what I learned in a class I failed 20 years ago. This was a good question - I hadn't really thought about it before, figuring people would look more at my recent work. I gave a very personal, very candid answer that revealed a lot of admitted weaknesses and immaturity in myself back then, but reflected that in hindsight I learned more about myself than any grade could ever teach me. I was asked about how strong my marriage was... he grilled me on this one. Big time. I grilled right back ("do you know 75% of all marriages don't make it through med school?" "Did you know 90% of all police marriages fail? I can count on one hand the number of cops my husband works with that haven't been divorced." "Point made (smile).") He asked if I had "any idea whatsoever" how hard medical school was going to be.. as in the sheer volume of information that had to be assimilated. I likened it to drinking from a firehose - and remarked that I had indeed tried doing just that when I was a firefighter and it knocked me on my ***** more than once before I figured out how to do it. He laughed. He asked if I had any personal experience with DOs as a patient. I had.. and it wasn't a good one. I told the story and said that doctor just wasn't for me. I went on to say that I never cared if a doctor was an MD or DO or QPT; a good doctor was good and a bad doctor was bad. And just because that DO wasn't right for me didn't mean he was a bad doctor. I also stated that my husband's doc is a DO and, after interviewing every pediatrician in my town, I selected the only DO pediatrician for my children's doctor. I stressed I was interested in becoming the very best physician I could be and that I applied to schools that seemed like they could help me in that endeavor. I also stated I was interested in OMM due to my own problems with hypermobility syndrome. Apparently a little while later I stretched my hand out on the table (my fingers come off the surface a LONG way when I do that). My interviewer remarked that he couldn't do that and pointed to my hand. Got off on a tangent about ligament laxity for a few seconds and the lack of MD help for that particular problem.

The interview went like that for almost an hour - hard pointed questions, and I gave unrehearsed answers. Some answers threw the question right back, some admitted weaknesses in myself, some pointed out strengths. At the end of the interview, he said "one of your recommendation letters stated that you are 'a woman of unusual candor'." He paused. I really didn't know what to say. I mean, is that good? Is it bad? Certainly it's true... dang, what do I say to that?!? I kinda nodded my head a little and said softly "yeah....." He smiled and said "don't lose that quality". The student guides took us on a tour of the medical buildings then, and they day was over around 3 or so. I got my acceptance letter 6 days later.

Before my interview, UNE was not high on my list. After my interview, UNE went to the top. I canceled my MSU interview and just turned down my PCOM-Ga interview because I got accepted to UNE and really loved the school, mainly based on the interview experience. It's hard to find a place where my candor is appreciated - so many places don't seem to like it much. I really felt welcome and appreciated for my strengths AND weaknesses at UNE.

I hope this helps. I know it's a long post, but I guess in summary the interview is all about you. Your strengths, weaknesses, and experiences. Everything in my application was touched on (EVERYTHING). But in a non-confrontational way... very probing, thought-provoking questions, yet conversational and non-threatening at all. Lots of give and take.

Good luck, redwings. I hope you like UNE as much as I did.

From a current MSI, you have made the right choice going with UNECOM. It's crazy, it's busy and it's fast, but it's awesome the entire time. Be prepared to surprise yourself at how much you can really learn when you have to. But remember, you can count on the C/O 2009 to help you guys along whenever you need it.

Ah, enough procrastinating... back to Immuno. :D

Good luck, stay stoked.

I got my deposit acknowledgement email today... although I was quite sad to write the check, I was thrilled to get the email. I can't believe we're in! Congrats to everyone who just recently heard :)

MTodd-
I am from MA, but I think there are at least a few other West Coasters. The recent class sizes have been around 110 students, I believe.

Wook, Momo, and JonB-
I have a question for any current students, since it seems like some of you check in every so often :p I know that we will hear, from Pipeline and from UNE, about housing opportunities; however, is it possible to hear from current students on their housing situations? I don't know enough about financial aid offerings and the 'affordable' costs of housing, depending on loan amounts etc., but I am really interested in living right on the beach. Where do most current students live and do you guys like it? What would your recommendations/warnings be?

If anyone has any info to share, I'd appreciate it. :D

Congrats on the interview, redwings. All of the info on the interview feedback page is really helpful, and mine was very similar. Be prepared for the "what has made you who you are" type question. Good luck!

I also got my deposit confirmation from Lisa today. At least I know they got it. *whew*

I'm coming from Colorado. As for housing, I think we'll look at buying a house in a town 20-30 minutes away (like Sanford, perhaps) as it's a bit cheaper than in Biddeford. We'll see what comes up for purchase when the time gets closer.

I actually bought a house in a town bordering Biddeford, but I had been in the workforce for a few years prior to starting med school. I do know that some students live near the beach. With that being said, I think that they had seasonal rentals (i.e. when late spring/summer rolled around they had to move). If you want thoughts on purchasing a house, I'll be happy to share my experiences. If you are interestedin rentals, I would have to defer to other posters. Most of my class (class 2006) rented, but there were a few of us who bought a house.

Congrats on your acceptance and please let me know if I can answer any questions!!

I do know of a number of people that did buy a house, but I just wanted to make sure that most likely third year you'll be moving away to do rotations. I'm certainly not saying for med students to not buy a house, but a few people I know kinda didn't understand that 3rd year we most likely end up moving away (Eastern PA, Upstate NY, Central Maine)... **there are 12ish spots here in southern maine for rotations, but they're always competative** definetly not trying to discourage anyone, just want to make sure you don't get into the same thing that some other people realized too late... on another note, Sanford's pretty nice, it's got pretty much everything you need, Wal-mart, Hannaford's, etc. right there. It is about 30 minutes away and I've heard the commute in the morning can be busy (a lot of people travel to Biddeford/Saco to work)... but it might be worth it.
About renting for some other people, someone might have mentioned this before, but there's a LOT of rental housing here in Biddeford. My wife and I are in a good sized one br with heat/hot-water for $600 a month. Two friends are sharing a newly remodelled 2 br with heat/hot-water and including a dish washer for $800. The other option that some people do is live down on the beach. There are a number of summer houses that people rent out seasonally. The only catch there is that you can't move in till like Labor Day (or whatever that September vacation is), so you'd have to find a place for the first month or so of school, but then you can have a really nice place right on the ocean for a really decent price. Quite a few people in my class (and I assume the first year class also) live down there.
About the loan money, the amount they provide is definetly more than enough for one person to survive on. My wife (who is working) and I were able to get a new (slightly used) car last spring, so it's definetly liveable (but of course if you cut back on stuff you can come outta UNE with less loans). anyway, I hope i've shed some light on a few things, but I'm sure I've created more questions. hope everyone has a great christmas time! :)

Yah, I know 3rd year I may be going away. But I've got a husband, two kids, and two dogs to move with me. My husband would be getting a job, so in all likelihood my whole family would NOT be moving with me after the first two years. Not like I'd see 'em very much anyway during rotations, and definitely not fair to upend the whole family every year or so. So we've thought about it, and are really interested in buying a house (not to mention the rollover from our current house appreciation to avoid the tax hit).

ShyRem:

jonb12997 brings up some important points to consider. I ended up keeping my house all 4 years, since I ended up doing my 3rd and 4th year rotations mostly in southern Maine. Keep in mind for tax purposes, the amount of appreciation (where you get whacked with taxes) has changed in the last 5 years. I don't know what the number is now, but it is pretty sizeable. With that being said, I wanted to bury the appreciation for student loan purposes. I wanted to be able to get student loans and not have to explain a large chunk of change in the bank account.

I am glad I bought a house. It has continued to appreciate in value, and the mortgage I'm paying is less or equal to what I would pay to rent. PLUS it's on a beautiful piece of property in the country side.

In regards to being away 3rd and 4th years. I have only really spent in total 2 months away (that were required), plus 3 months (away rotations) during my last 2 years at school (I'm almost done). You won't know about the last 2 years until after the lottery at the end of the 2nd year. With that being said, you MAY end up going to a core rotation site that is a distance from home during your 3rd year (luck of the draw during lottery). My class was pretty fortunate in that about 90-97% (guesstimate) people ended up where they wanted.

The vast majority of people pass the boards on their first attempt. If you study for the exam and work at doing well in your classes you will pass. The number of people passing changes from year to year. It depends on the individual students and their motivation more than the teaching. The last statistics I saw posted on the UNE website was...

14. How do UNECOM students do on boards?
UNECOM students are required to pass COMLEX-USA Level 1 before continuing their core rotations, and required to pass COMLEX-USA Level 2 CE and PE prior to graduation. An average of 89 percent (89%) of UNECOM students pass the boards the first time, although the pass rate can vary from year to year and between the different exam levels. Although not required to take the USMLE, students who choose to take both exams score similarly.

Had a good Christmas and New Year's. How 'bout you, redwings? I still only have an acceptance to UNE, and am still on hold for one allo school that I dearly love. That's it for me so far, and it seems that will be it for me this year. I have turned down interviews at MSUCOM and PCOM-Ga - I couldn't justify the extra tuition at MSUCOM and my husband wasn't really thrilled about Atlanta (but he absolutely LOVES the idea of Maine!).

Redwings, don't stress about your interview. I actually did no prep other than read over my application and just enjoyed myself. I had questions I didn't anticipate and answered them honestly and with great candor. Best interview I've had yet. Just relax and be yourself - it'll all be ok. And good luck. :luck:

Jbone, you have a sick mind. Try the hockey team in Detroit. Shyrem, thanks for the advice. I am a little nervous, mostly cause of what happened to end my fellowship last winter. I was living in Scotland, studying psychoneuroimmunology, when my relationship fell apart. I got devestated and couldnt focus on my work. She was my first true love so you can imagine how rough it was. Needless to say, I learned a lot from the situation, did a lot of soul searching, and actually think I am stronger because of having had the experience, as rough as it first was. Got any advice on that guys? Thanks.

Be honest. I got a question about what I learned from a class I got a D- in 20 years ago and why I took it. Yup 20 years ago and a D- (hey, the next semester I got all Fs). I stopped, thought about it, and answered honestly. My answer revealed a lot of insecurities I had in that part of my life and why in general I didn't do well in school. But it also revealed that I grew up a lot from that experience. And it revealed maturity within myself to see my faults, my errors, and the ability to admit them. It also validated at least one of my LORs (which apparently said I was a woman of "unusual candor").

There were a bunch of jobs that were open in the last 4-6 months incluing Old Orchard Beach, Biddeford, Sanford, two sheriff's departments (don't recall which), Portland, South Portland, etc..

Sanford has a reputation as being very affordable, but also has some very interesting sections.

I'll check the Sunday paper and see if I can find out if anyone is actively advertising right now.

Interestingly enough, at least two students spouse's have worked in the field (in the last 2-3 years) while the student was in school.

Wook, he's got 13 years experience. 10 on patrol, 3 on community advocacy program (CAP). He's also done special assignments: bike patrol, college campus police substation, forensic investigation (including 7 murders), Colt armorer, rifle instructor, active shooter instructor, FBI defensive tactics instructor. He's on the SWAT team (for 10 years now) as a sniper and explosive breacher. He's also currently on the bomb squad. Experience as a firefighter (and level I instructor) and EMTB in the past (but expired on both now - too bad, he was one of the best EMTBs I'd ever worked with). He's also taught part of every in-service for the past 8 years or so. And he is the liquor enforcement guy for our city.

I know Sarah Shepherd's husband is a cop - he went to Biddeford with very little previous experience in the field. I think he'd only been on the sheriff's dept for a year or two before they moved. And I hear the local SO out here just hired someone from Biddeford PD. But we haven't met him yet to pump him for information.

He put in a resume for a police training coordinator for the state, but hasn't heard even an acknowledgement of receipt yet.

On another note, any idea about what are the schools like out there for kids in elementary and middle school? My daughter's going to be in 6th grade, my son in 3rd.

And by "interesting sections" in Sanford do you mean 'cute/cool' interesting or 'don't walk there at night without your shotgun' interesting? Insight to affordable places to live that are safe for kids would be great!!

ShyRem:

Sorry, I can't speak from experience about the schools. My daughter is just starting kindegarten this year. RUMOR, though is that the school systems in Saco aren't too bad, nor Kennebunkport, nor the ones adjacent to and north and west of Portland. Portland is allegedly not too bad either, but I would defer on this question to more knowledgable posters. I live in Arundel and its lovely, but I'm hearing that schools aren't that awesome in this town.

As far as my comment on interesting sections of Sanford...Hmmmm...Shotgun is overkill, but maybe pepper spray. Again, that is only CERTAIN sections, not the whole community.

PS I did 7 years on the job. Had fun. Glad to be doing what I'm getting into now, though. Two members of the faculty have LE experience as well. PM if you'd like more details about that.

I just wanted to stop in an congratulate all those accepted for the class of 2010. I'm currenlty a 3rd year at UNE and, in retrospect, really enjoyed the time I spent there. I didn't realize how well the school had prepared me until I reached rotations.
I just warn you to be prepared for long days, longer nights and plenty of stress to go round. The test come fast and furious and you will always feel like you don't know anything. But, study hard and above all be confident in your abilities and knowledge.
Like all schools, there will be things you love and things you hate about the program. Just sit tight and know that it will all be over in 2 years. The 3rd yr they leave you all alone to figure it out...like a bird that just fell out of the nest!

Hey guys, how is everyone? I feel like I dont even belong on this thread cause I havent even been accepted, hell, I havent even interviewed yet. I just have my heart set on UNECOM. I am excited and nervous about my interview, but I had a mock interview at my old school this weekend and talked about a lot of the problems I might face during an interview. I am still nervous though in a scared, stomach in my throat kind of way. I am thinking about back up plans if I dont get in and wondering where I will be next year. Is anyone else on here interviewing Jan. 24th? Just wondering. Here's hoping that my interview goes well and that I eventually will be able to officially call myself a member of the class of 2010.

ShyRem and Docbill,

Count me in! I agree we need to pump up the class spirit. I think I might have enough to cover a few others. I have been talking to a few students about housing and apartment stuff, and now I am just waiting to hear about getting our Pipeline accounts because I am ready for some more info. :p

Lucky for me, I mostly only have to worry about myself once I get up there, but I wish you the best of luck with housing, schools, and jobs for your husband, ShyRem. I know it can't be easy to move your entire family across the country, but I hope that the transition goes smoothly. And, if those are your kids in your avatar, they are beautiful! :)

I hope the January weather is keeping everyone in high spirits! The news said it was 15 degrees in Portland tonight... is this what we have to look forward to?

Nah, only kidding. The school and surrounding area are beautiful, regardless of the weather- are any of you skiers/riders? We'll have to find out if there's an affiliation between the school and a specific mountain or an All-East type pass for those few-and-far-between bouts of free time that we could use to get out and enjoy the fresh air and snow.

this was in our monthly newsletter:

According to James Gaffney, Coordinator of Recruiting, "AACOMAS applications received by UNECOM are up 21 percent from the same time last year, and up 31 percent from two years ago. Year-to-date, UNECOM has received 2,307 AACOMAS applications compared to 1826 applications last January and 1586 in 2004. There has been a general increase in applications to most of the osteopathic schools, although the average is slightly less than that achieved here at UNECOM."

Hi Current students!!!!

I have a question.

How much does one need per/year. Tuition/Living/insurance/fees... what has been your estimate?

Ohhh I should add... I assume that I will be living with a roomate(s)

jonb12997
01-12-2006, 04:35 PM
From: http://www.une.edu/financialaid/costscom.asp

Full Time $34,820
General Service Fee $450
Malpractice Insurance $85
Total $35,355

Health Insurance for the student is $2,207 for the 2005/2006 academic year.

Medical Students are required to purchase equipment/instruments for the program. The Financial Aid Office allows $1,000 under the first year budget to purchase these items.

Students are required to purchase a laptop computer. A one-time technology allowance of $2,000 is included in the 1st year budget.

Books and Supplies
The costs will vary depending on the courses the student is taking. The Financial Aid Office uses $1,850 for the first year of the program, $1,850 for the second year of the program, $720 for the third year of the program and $720 for the fourth year of the program as a standard allowance for student budget purposes. The student's actual expenses may vary.

Indirect Costs
Indirect costs are included in the student's financial aid budget. These are not direct charges from the university, but allowances that are given to cover expenses that the student may have while attending school (the allowances listed below cover the number of months the student is enrolled for each year of the program):

1st year (August- May)
Room and Board $11000
Transportation /Travel costs $ 3600
Personal/Misc $ 1600

The Room and Board allowance is based on the following components:
Rent $550/month - Is enough if you're living with a roommate
Board (food) $360/month - plenty for food
Utilities $190/month - PLENTY to get phone/internet/cable/electric/etc.
Total: $1,100 per month

BIG ouch. I have a question for current students: Do any of you know of students at UNECOM that received the National Health Service Corps scholarship? They have a loan repayment program as well. I've been looking into it and I am interested, but I wanted to hear from anyone who has applied/gotten it. Also, I was wondering if any of you knew anyone who has taken out the primary care loans that UNE advertises on their financial aid site.

Thanks!

Shannon:

I can't advise you on the NHSC scholarship, but you are committing yourself to doing one of the specialties that they need. If you are not sure of what you want to do for residency or there is a possibility of doing something besides what they want, I would suggest holding off and getting the loans, otherwise it may not be a bad deal.

Me, I'm taking the loans. It gave me more flexibility for whatever it was I decided to do. We'll see if I get into the specialty that I'm interested.

Hopefully, other people who have opted for the NHSC scholarship will post more information.

I'd email the admissions office at UNE and ask them if they can connect you with someone in one of the classes who is doing NHSC. I know of a couple, but i don't want to just put their email address out there without their ok... The admissions office will know which students have said they'd be willing to correspond with incoming students. :)

Good call on the Sallie Mae loans, Redwings. Their "medloans" program looks pretty impressive. Do any of you guys know when we will start getting the serious financial aid information from the school? I know we have to have the FAFSA in first, but all this number crunching is starting to look very overwhelming and I'd like more facts (although they probably won't make me feel too much better). :p

Wook, you should have come over. I was the guy in the suit at the death and dying lecture, in biochem and at the cardio lecture. I was hanging out with Janelle and Kristina for most of the afternoon. Overall, the day went really well I thought. When I say that they asked me if I was redwings on SDN, it was when I was first checking in, not during the interview. It was a woman but I dont know if it was Lisa. ShyRem, the campus is beautiful. We had gotten about 6 inches of snow the day before so it was pretty nice. Although it was a little icy, it was still great. We had a big group interviewing too. 12 people, for about 4 or 5 of us it was our first interview, and most of the others already had a few acceptances. I really felt pretty good coming out of the interview. I was able to talk about why I wanted to come to UNE, about my fellowship and what I learned from it and quite a few other topics. I actually think I was overprepared, but it was all good. So now is the hardest part, the waiting game. Hope that everyone is well, and thanks again to you all for your support. Take care.

I think that I might hold off for at least a year or two and see if I choose to apply then; one of the main reasons is because I want the freedom to choose a non-primary care specialty if that is where my main interests lie- which is exactly why the above link is so helpful. If the NHSC scholar changes their mind, they incur MAJOR fees, and it states right on the website that you are likely to pay back THREE times as much as you borrow.

Thank you :)

I see how it is...just cuz I'm slow to notice we actually had a thread set up in this forum I got overlooked from the official acceptance thread. I was accepted back in November. Interviewed first day of interviews in September. Made the $500 and $1000 deposits and am raring to go!

Hey all. Thanks for the well wishes today. The interview was really relaxed and my interviewers were really cool. Right when I got there, the first question they asked me was if I posted on SDN and if my name there was redwings. I thought oh crap, they know its me. But they just said they sometimes check on the site to see what people are talking about and thinking.

So now begins the waiting game. I really loved the school and all the people I met were awesome. So keep your fingers crossed for me. Thanks again everyone.

Whoa, thas crazy. I guess its cool to know they actually check SDN. I hope they didn't see the posts I had made about my displeasures in their new admissions decision policies...hmmmmm....maybe that is why I didn't hear until November? Ah well, I'm accepted and very happy! It still hasn't really sunk in yet. Anyone else feel the same way? I have this inkling that it will not really hit me until I am sitting there at orientation with all of you.

Fozzie, I absolutely agree with you. Hasn't sunk in here either. Just doesn't seem quite real - like it's just another bill to pay. I think it feels like that because I haven't gotten anything from the school yet (except the Jan. News thing). It just doesn't feel like anything has happened.

Except my house is half painted and we just ordered new carpet. :)

So how much more do you have to accomplish to get your house ready for sale?
When are you planning to head east? The wife and I are aiming for late May/early June time frame.
My friend lives right in Biddeford Pool. Would love to live there. Just need her to hook us up with some good info about places to rent. If not there, hopefully somewhere real close by to campus and the ocean.

There are a ton of incredible places to rent right by the ocean. I went to college at UNE before Med school and I lived right on the water for several years. The only problem is that most of the good places are seasonal rentals because they fetch $1000-$2000 a WEEK durring the summer. The trick is finding a year round rental. There are some of those in biddeford pool... but not a lot and they go quick.

I love the Biddeford Pool area. My friend has lived there since she started in 2004. I know of a couple other people in her class that live right down the road from campus on Hills Beach road. Hopefully I can snag one of their places this summer. We'll see. Thanks again for the information.

Oh, fozzie, we have yet siding on the house, the new carpet (should be in late feb.), finish painting the house, lay laminate flooring in hall, stairs, and entryway. Trim boards, caulk the tile in the kitchen. That oughta do it.

We're looking at moving in mid-late June, I think. Hoping to buy rather than rent - a family of 4 is really almost cheaper to buy a house than rent. But we'll see.

If I were closer I'd help you all out with prepping the house for sale. I like that sort of labor. I agree, purchasing is much more feasible than renting in your situation. Considering what you and I have been hearing from others already up there in Biddeford and also the listings I've found online, I think we'll both have success with finding wicked nice places to live.

Another note, I was hoping we'd have more people from our class into this forum. Well, it is still early in the year.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Guys, Again.. since I have a spify new suit (see aftar)

I was wondering when the second fee is due.

Is it possible to make a payment on line through UNE website. Not pipeline, but the other one, where you can find your registration etc... Cause I once saw that option to make payment with visa.

I guess present students will know more about this..... ORRR one of the staff members on SDN.. hint hint

The second fee is due within 60 days of the first payment. So if you paid by 12/15 (as I did), your second fee is due by 2/13. For example, they received my first deposit on 12/14 (confirmed by email). Lisa told me in that same email that my second deposit would be due by 2/12 (60 days after 12/14).

Hey BA,
Love the suit. I've had the worst couple days. Friday on my way to work in my new "used" car I hit a patch of black ice, lost control, became a spinning top on the highway, slammed into the guard rail and ricocheted off into a tractor trailer. I of course I do not recall any of this, I was told this is what had happened. My new car is totaled. Thankfully no one else was involved or injured and I'm still alive. Course, I do not remember much of anything from the past few days. Concussions are not fun, remember that! Whiplash is also not a fun thing. wait...why am I on here? oh crap, I guess I should go eat something...or did I already eat? hmmmm :(

Oh, fozzie... at least you weren't hurt badly. Be aware, tho, that small effects from concussions can last quite a while, so be patient. My sister got one from a car accident and the effects have lasted now 6 months. Getting better, but she is still sleeping a lot, still very tired, still having a little trouble thinking clearly.

Hey man,

sorry to hear about your car accident. BUT glad to hear that you are okay. Cars have little value.. compared to body and damaged non-OMT treatable organs (head.. brain... etc... etc...)

Just take it easy and try not to have any bad dreams or regrets.

I had a small accident because of the snow about 4 years ago and it scared the crap out me for years. Especially driving in the snow. Now WHEN I drive, I don't have a car cause I live in the city, I am very careful.

Take it easy and try to get over.

BA

Hey, thanks, I needed the laugh! :D
I'm trying to attach photos of what used to be a honda civic. I still do not remember anything that happened. I guess it is best that way.

i've been to a number of car accidents and that is really smashed! I'm glad you turned out ok... if you're still having any pain or other problems once school starts you should try to get in to see one of the OMM fellows next fall. You'll be able to be seen for free... btw, what type of car "was" that? looks like maybe a honda or nissan, can't quite tell...

I'm still surprised I came away from that accident with a concussion and a few scrapes and bruises. It was a 2002 Honda Civic LX.

Fozzie,

Crazy man. Car accidents scare me. I have never been in one, but I have seen a lot of people get messed up pretty bad because of them. Just this winter, I tapped the breaks and pulled a 720 on the middle of the highway with a 18-wheeler coming on strong. Just went into the ditch on the side of the road though. Glad you arent really that bad off though. A concussion isnt much when it could have been so much worse.

So I think the adcom met this past weekend. So my fate as a member of the class of 2010 has been determined. Keep your fingers crossed everyone. Take care.

Rob,
I look forward to hearing good news from you on this forum as soon as you receive your letter of acceptance from UNE! :luck:

swtcat,
Someone was looking out for me! I am still surprised at this whole situation. As for the deposits, I sent my second deposit out earlier this month. I'm just waiting for the first real round of information to roll in.

Thanks for your concerns everyone!

Just be thankful you are alright. My car got totaled last year over christmas break. It was a 97 taurus, but had only 60k and ran like a tank. It was paid off and would have lasted til the end of med school. Some guy spun out and hit me. But look on the bright side, if your like me, new car shopping is fun!

Hey Steve:
Very sorry to hear about your accident...glad to hear you're OK :) . My dad actually was killed in a car wreck in the late 80's...so as such I drive like an old man since the possibility scares the hell out of me, but it really can happen to anyone....especially with black ice.

I was actually hit a while back by a pregnant woman who was drunk (I was more pissed at that than her hitting me...). But alas, she was driving a Dodge Neon, and I was in my 2-ton 1990 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser Wagon...needless to say I was fine...but again, you never know.

Well best wishes for a speedy recovery...we'll be back up at UNECOM in less than 6 months, so get well soon!!!

Best regards,

Ryan.
