Many have said that going to SGU or Ross would put you at a disadvantage for those ultra-competitive residencies (dermatology, opth, orthopedics..etc..). What about when you'd only want to do an IM residency, then go on to do a subspecialty like gastro. or cardiovascular diseases?

You will be able to get into a good IM program with good step 1 and step 2 scores and good LOR's. Fomr there you will be able to land a fellowship depending on the quality of your residency program and your performance (and LOR's)

I agree.. once you get into a residency ..where you went to med school is quickly forgotten.The quality of your performance, conections etc will then determine your future.There are plenty of IMGs in competitive fellowship programs..

Do you think carrib. students have an easier time specializing after doign IM than DO students? Or is it that once you ve completed an IM residency, no one cares where you did you med school anymore?

remember those ultra competitive residencies are just that...for US med students as well. no one would pick a carib school over an acceptance to a US school, so making that choice to get a shot at an uber- competitive residency is not the issue- getting a shot to become an MD is- and either gives you a chance at that.
