Amy B 10-23-2005, 06:56 AM Congrats VAgirl   Waitingfor2010 10-24-2005, 09:07 PM I just got my acceptance to VCOM, and while I'm not 100% sure, I will most likely be joining you next year! I absolutely loved the school when I interviewed there, so I'm nearly positive I'll choose to go there. I'm starting to look for some housing, so if any girls out there are looking for a roomate starting in August 2006, let me know! I'd love to live in the complex right across from the campus (The Crossing at Knollwood), but wherever would be great. =) Congrats to you all! goat 10-25-2005, 02:32 PM Woo hoo! Congratulations everyone! Is there a reason only girls are posting under this thread? Got an acceptance as well here. But got a couple of more interviews although I was very impressed with the atmosphere there and the friendly people. Amy, is the gross lab and library have 24 hr access or do you have to try to get all your work in by a certain hour? I heard somewhere that the whole building closes down at a certain time. Thanks in advance. Amy B 10-25-2005, 03:35 PM   Congrats waitingfor2010 Goat, the building is open till midnight I think. That was changed from 8pm so that is good. There just wasn't enough flow after midnight to justify someone on staff being in th building. However the great thing about our affiliation with Va Tech is that you can use the library and buildings at the Tech campus if you want to study after midnight. I haven't but I know people who go there in the evenings. I found that I had plenty of time to go into the gross anatomy lab during building hours. To be quite honest I learned more from Rohen (the lab textbook) then I did from going into the lab after lab class hours. I actually only went in there 4 times the whole year after lab class hours. But others in my class went in there more than that. I will just depend on your style of learning. jsmittyund03 11-09-2005, 02:23 PM Hey guys, Just got my call today, I'm pretty stoked about the possibility of going to VCOM. I'm fairly sure I'm going to end up in Blacksburg, so I might as well ask some questions. How do you feel about the block schedule Amy? What kind of lecture hours do you have (average?) versus independent study and lab time. What do you think of the large classroom lectures versus small group learning? Also, when was the first time you stepped into a clinic to get a little experience? Lastly, what do you think has changed the most since you've been there, since it's a fairly new school? Do they have board preparation material (ie Kaplan) available or included with the education? Yea, I'm barraging you with questions, I think I'm just excited. Even so, I don't know how I am going to cheer for the Hokies....at least there's a BW3s in Blacksburg, I miss their happy hours and their Caribbean Jerk wings. Yum. Amy B 11-09-2005, 04:38 PM Well, congrats... I guess I will answer these, although anytime my classmates want to jump in and take these is fine with me. I dont want everyone to get input from me only. I am biased ;) :p I like the block schedule and the systems based learning. I like how all teh courses tie in with each other throughout the blocks. Class hours will vary with each block. Like now we are in class on average Monday through Thursday 8:30 - 3:30, but some days we are out by 1:30 and tuesdays can run until 5:30 since that is OMM/PPC lab. Friday's in teh second year are early clinical and clinical skills lab days. This block is not every friday so that is good. We are going to the nursing homes on one of those fridays and are in teh skills lab on another one. This skills lab is the suturing lab, which is fun. I have been volunteerig at the free clinics for 11 months now so I am in a clinical setting throughout the month. We did go a few ties to the VA and or nursing homes last year, but the big clinical push is this MSII year. But that said. as with the clinic, there are opportunities to go places. We have been able to volunteer to go to the Va Tech football games and work in the first aid rooms. That is a blast. We have had people volunteer to go on medical missions out of the country as well as an opportunity to go to a rural setting with a RAM, which stands for remote area medical corp. Here is the link http://www.ramusa.org/ The list goes on..... I like the large learning verses small group learning, but that is a personal preference. As to what has changed the most other than us getting closer to graduation,... hhmmm i would have to say the lectures have improved greatly from what the MSIIIs. VCOM has us fill out quality assessments after each class is over. They do listen to suggestions. They are purchasing Qbank for us and we are to have access to it before Christmas and will have it till the boards. Does that help you? Good luck with your choice. I love VCOM. Do I love everything....NO, but nothing is 100% perfect and you have to make do with things you cant change or things you dont like. Like, how is it systems based? jsmittyund03 11-16-2005, 07:23 AM Anyone from Northern VA? J-Smitty VaGirl82 11-16-2005, 11:05 AM Richmond :) jsmittyund03 11-16-2005, 01:04 PM Richmond? Nice, I have a good friend who lives up in the "Fan." When I visited, we went some shoddy bar called Tiki Bob's? Interesting crowd there, but I loved Richmond. J-Smitty Richmond :) VaGirl82 11-18-2005, 01:33 PM yeah Tiki Bob's has a weird crowd sometimes, depending on the night you go. If you come to RIC again, you should check out Tobacco Company or Rich Brau. There's a good mix of college kids (undergrads and grads) and professionals. I'm gonna miss Richmond come August :( but I can't wait for Blacksburg! Amy B 11-18-2005, 09:21 PM jsmittyund03 - what dont I like?? Hhhmmm I guess this week that would be the mandatory attendence policy. This week is not a good week to ask me about anything. Pharm exam in 3 days is freaking me out :scared: Ravenfeather - by system based I mean in any certain block you are working on one or 2 systems. So in Physio you will be talking about neuro and in anatomy you will be going over the neuro system and in PPC (principles of primary care) you will learn neuro exams and in CCC (clinical case correlations) you are going over cases pertaining to neurology...system based. This is compared to other schools that may be doing neuro in physio and muscles in anatomy and something totally different in the other classes adn then at the end of your year you will have to tie it all together on your own. SO that is why I LOVE the systems based learning. VaGirl82 11-30-2005, 06:42 PM Hey....just wanted to ask if anyone had looked into housing options yet and where you think you might end up living. I'm thinking about the townhomes across the street from VCOM...but the rent is a bit steep. I am definitely looking at the places right across the street....I would LOVE to be able to just walk there or run home and grab lunch. I put my name on the housing list that VCOM puts out, but it seems like it's going to be at least a few weeks until it really gets going. Anyway, let me know if you have any more thoughts on housing you guys! cyclegirl 12-07-2005, 09:27 PM I just got my acceptance phone call today and VCOM is my #1 choice. Were you there then for your interview; I thought we had a good group. The only thing I'm not looking forward to (coming from Louisiana) is the winter weather. But after interviewing elsewhere, VCOM is hands-down the best place. Is snow that white stuff that comes from the sky? cyclegirl 12-08-2005, 01:33 PM trinityalumnus, I interviewed on 11/17 also. Cyclegirl and I both interviewed on 11/17 and got THE call on 12/7. Neither of us have received anything in the mail yet. Just curious, not worried (yet). jsmittyund03 12-15-2005, 11:11 AM No big deal, you should get it any day. It's not even a packet, really, just a letter saying, "send us money." I think the good stuff doesn't come for a few weeks. Just call if you get concerned. Congrats on the acceptances people. Any of you on the roommate listserv? Just got called today and have an interview Jan. 12th! Very excited!! Anyway, here is a link to an apartment guide that VT gives as a link to its students. http://www.apt-guide.com/nrv/frameset.html I would suggest staying away from some big undergrad places like Foxridge, Terrace View, etc unless you are placed in the Graduate sections. I actually live off of South Main Street, which I would suggest because it is much more quiet and there are more grad students and familys and its closer to VCOM. The apartments that are across from VCOM are really nice I've heard but also cost a little bit more. Hope to see you guys next fall! markdo3549 12-21-2005, 11:30 PM Please click one of the Quick Reply icons in the posts above to activate Quick Reply.w that I have been accepted as well and I look forward to meeting all of you very soon. Mark ER_DO2B 12-23-2005, 07:04 PM I just received my acceptance phone call yesterday 12/22 and am psyched about 2010. My visit to Blacksburg was great and I cant wait to start in August. Out of all of the different schools that I have visited, VCOM felt like "home" from the minute I got there. Other than a laptop, is there any other equipment that needs to be purchased as an MSI? Other than a laptop, is there any other equipment that needs to be purchased as an MSI? See you all in August! Congrats ... I know what you mean about "felt at home" comment. I had the same thoughts after other interviews elsewhere. I was surfing around the VCOM website and apparently our tuition includes anatomy dissection kit, scrubs, embroidered student lab coat, etc. I couldn't find any equipment requirements other than the laptop. After you send in your seat deposit, Megan (admissions director) will start sending more info emails to you. One email recommends reading the student handbook, which includes the requirement for professional attire both in class and on clinicals. After working in the OR and having a wardrobe consisting, essentially, of different colored scrubs it looks like I'll be buying several sets of nice pants and collared shirts. What this? ... under the student clinical section, they mention shirt and tie are required on rotation other than in OR and ER. What the heck is a neck tie? Man's self-imposed torture mechanism. Amy B 12-24-2005, 12:33 PM What the heck is a neck tie? Man's self-imposed torture mechanism. Like women's panty hose...self imposed torture device  You dont need anything except laptop. You can chose to buy books, and extra scubs if you choose. But nothing else is needed in your first year. I'm scheduled to interview in early January, and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions regarding the interview day. Two specific questions- How long is it taking people to get admission decisions? I've seen some people find out a week later, where others find out three (or more) weeks later. What are the current response times? Also, this is my first med school interview and I am trying to decide what to wear. While this isn't a major concern, I don't want to show up either way over/under dressed. Suit? Pressed pants and jacket? What do most male interviewees wear? Thanks in advance... :) trinityalumnus 12-26-2005, 07:14 AM Hi everyone- VCOM is my first choice for school, and I will hopefully be posting as a newly-admitted student just a few weeks from now. The admissions office calls with the good news by the next afternoon. Attire: this is a professional school atmosphere. You will never go wrong wearing a conservative business suit, or subdued coat and tie. Consider it a job interview - better safe than sorry. Thanks in advance... :) Good luck with your interviews. There are a couple of things that I found helpful in preparing for each of mine. First, I read a book called " The D.O.'s" which is a real short book (140+/-) pages that details the history of osteopathic medicine. This book was a great reference in two of my interview questions. Second, I read through the different posts on the Medical School Interview Feedback forum. This provided insight on the types of questions to expect as well as read through feedback from others that have already interviewed. I would definitely wear a conservative suit and tie to the interview as you never know who you might be interviewing with. Remember, there is no second chance in making a first impression. I'm in the process of applying to Air Force and Army right now, but still uncertain about it due to some negativity expressed in these forums. Any thoughts? J I was an enlisted guy for a while. I love the military so I will be biased. It is a great way to go. However, you want to do it for the love-of-country, and a sense of duty, not for what you can get financially out of it. There is a lot more money to be made on the outside if you do anything outside of primary care, and in all liklihood you will be miserable if you do it for the financial reason. I know plenty of military physicians who either love it or hate it but many of them agree on one thing: Don't do it for the money. If you plan on primary care then the military scholarship is way worth the price tag because the salaries and benefits are commensurate with their civilian counterparts, and you have no loans after 4 years like you will in the civilian world. But if you plan to specialize then you can make more on the outside and pay off your student loans. BTW, congrats on VCOM. It is a great school. ER_DO2B 01-09-2006, 08:15 PM Absolutely, they finalize the date yet? Has anyone else setup their email accounts through school yet? Also, anyone trying to go HPSP? I'm in the process of applying to Air Force and Army right now, but still uncertain about it due to some negativity expressed in these forums. Any thoughts? J I have had several friends that looked into HPSP and all decided against it. The main reason is the way the military views your internship/residency at times of need. I have heard that once you finish your internship, you can be called to active duty, thus postponing any plans that you may have for your residency. I have had a local Army recruiter call several times, and still has not answered my question about being called out of your residency in a time of war or threat to national security. I also have a friend that is an Ortho surgeon that was called up and had to leave his $1MM+ per year practice in order to go to Afghanistan for nearly 18 months. I would agree, that HPSP would be appropriate only for non-financial reasons. Just my 2 cents worth. I have nothing but respect for the military, but just dont see it as a viable way for me to avoid the debt associated with med school. cyclegirl 01-09-2006, 10:33 PM I will not be attending the accepted students day because I live on the other side of the country, otherwise I would love to go. I too am applying for the HPSP scholarship with the Navy. Like others have said the fact that they will be paying for school should not be a main consideration for applying. You have to really want to be in the military otherwise you will regret it. In regards to being pulled out of your residency think of it this way, you are in the military to fill the needs of your country. If orders come for you to sacrifice a part of your life (putting your training on hold) than you need to be ready to do that. If you would not be willing to go and help as a DR to care for the men and women fighting to protect this country then do not apply for this scholarship, it is part of the deal. My $0.02. Townhouse has 2 full and 2 half bathrooms, 2 living rooms, 1 dining room, kitchen, new full size washer and dryer, gas grill, gas fireplace, electric stove, microwave, dishwasher, and other kitchen amenities. The townhouse has gas heat, electric air conditioning, cable TV and wireless internet. I am a female in the class of 2008 female and will soon be out on rotations. I would prefer non-smoking roommates and w/o pets, since I have two adorable and very lazy indoor cats. Rent is $350/mo plus 1/3 utilities. Contact Lisa, lmgray@vcom.vt.edu. LMG908 02-01-2006, 03:48 PM Just curious if anyone knows how I could purchase a VCOM t-shirt or sweatshirt? Hey Cyclegirl One of the main fundraisers for VCOM clubs is to sell VCOM stuff. So yes VCOM shirts are available in the bookstore (which actually the only store I know of too, but I haven't really looked), but before you go all out you might want to see what the clubs have. There are usually lots of t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc to choose from at various times during the year. VTbarrelracer 02-05-2006, 09:26 AM Which apartments on south main street should I call about renting and what are the phone numbers??? I personally am looking at Hilltop Terrace and Lantern Ridge. They are just off of South Main and prob. less then 5 minutes from VCOM by car. They both sound pretty nice and are cheaper. Hilltop is $400 for a 1 bedroom and $450 for a 2 bedroom. Lantern is $415 for a 1 bedroom and $475 for a 2 bedroom. Only drawback is that they don't have a washer/dryer in the individual apartments but they do both have central laundry fascilities. Cedarfield apartments are just down the road and they do have individual washer/dryers in the apartments but they are more expensive; $540 for a 1 bedroom and $660 for a 2 bedroom. You can read about them and get the phone numbers from the following website: http://www.apt-guide.com/nrv/frameset.html Amy B 02-05-2006, 01:07 PM You are going to find your time quite limited and are not going to want to spend time carrying laundry around... Keep that in mind when you are looking into places to rent.. Also rememember to keep checking the want ads on the vcom student site as well as the announcements. Sublets are becoming available since we just got our rotation sites. http://www.vcomstudent.com/index.php http://www.vcomstudent.com/announcements/ BayRunner 02-06-2006, 02:42 PM Hey everyone. I signed a lease with Cedarfield. My total rent for a 1BR is $575. I do like it because it has lots of emenities (dishwasher, W/D, central air, gas) It is the cheapest place I found that included all those. It is a pricey, but a little better than Knollwood and The Crossings ($650+ for the same, except those are right next to school!) But hey, I live in Michigan and signed a lease without actually visiting places. They didn't give me much thinking time, I had to sign the lease ASAP and I took a gamble. I have a real cheap car payment and I've saved a bunch over the last few years, so I decided I may as well spend some extra on living. I guess. Maybe. Hopefully I won't regret it. I also took a gamble on SOMA insurance. :scared: I hope I am right on that decision. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan now, and was going to go with Blue Cross Anthem in VA. Suprisingly, BCBS-MI and BCBS-Anthem are not compatible, so I couldn't easily switch regions. Also, they would'nt answer any of my questions over the phone and they were rude... so SOMA insurance it is! So far they have sent me a good amount of detailed information and seem to be efficient with their processes and paper work; tedious, but which is what I like. I tried to be the most thorough I can be for living so far away. But, I wouldn't recommend following my footsteps! I don't need a guilty conscience if things go wrong! -Ryan cyclegirl 02-07-2006, 12:15 PM I just rented a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment at Cedarfield apartments and need a female roommate. I do have a large (70lbs.) short hair dog that will be living with me. Hi. I'm in the 2008 class and currently trying to figure out my 3rd year rotations. The biggest problem that I'm running into is that I own my townhouse but 1/2 my rotations are far far away and the other 1/2 are about a 45 min drive. The 2008 class had a lot of problems with the 3rd rotations b/c it seems that we all have a house, a spouse, or kids (with several of my classmates having all 3) and we all wanted to be near VCOM. On the opposite side of the spectrum, almost everyone in the 2007 class got the rotations they wanted and did not have even 1/2 the problems we are having. If I were to do it all over again, I would not buy, I would rent. So I am not saying DON'T BUY A HOUSE, but be informed about what could happen during your 3rd and 4th clinical years before you consider buying a house. Just like your financial situation, your living arrangements are a very personal choice. Nutrition cases gave some of teh Mac users fits and they had to do their cases at VCOM rather than downloading it and doing it at home for 4 hours. I do not know if this was the case with all the Mac users. As to how strict they are... here's the thing...they tell you what is required, if you dont have the required computer you will be using it at your own risk, so if something doesnt work, you may end up in the library using those computers. There are some people on there that are VCOM students who are looking for roomates. cyclegirl 04-14-2006, 08:54 PM I actually already posted on vcomstudent.com. I rented an apartment at Cedarfield and I need a roommate and am not having any luck. Thank you though. I rented an apartment at Cedarfield and I need a roommate and am not having any luck. Thank you though. You could try posting a listing on the off campus housing website that is run by Virginia Tech. It's actually how we found our last roommate. The link for it is http://www.uusa.vt.edu/uusaServices/OCH/rentals/vtoch.htm You might get either undergrads or graduates but as long as you specified quiet, etc you might be able to find someone that would work. Or you could specify graduate students only if you were worried about maturity issues or what not. ER_DO2B 04-16-2006, 03:42 PM We're one week away. Are people going to be staying in town on Saturday night, or are people heading home? It'd be pretty sweet for some of us to hit up downtown Blacksburg for a brew. I will be in town Saturday night and up for something to do. I agree it would be nice to go out, since there wont be a lot of time to do so once school starts. OhNoNotAgain 04-17-2006, 07:40 PM Current VCOM students: I'm sure you get this question 'ad nauseum', but does the school website have a list of all the clinical rotation sites (I couldn't find one)? How many do you get to "choose" from? Will the school allow you to set up a rotation with a hospital they are not currently affiliated with? Thank you for the insight~! How many do you get to "choose" from? Will the school allow you to set up a rotation with a hospital they are not currently affiliated with? Thank you for the insight~! I've heard they are going to change the way 3rd year rotations work for your class. As of right now, my guesses for the answers to your questions are no, none, and probably not. 3rd year is assigned by the school--all primary care, no selectives or electives. 4th year, will probably change, but as of now, you have a set number of VCOM approved, AOA approved, and elective rotations and you are on your own to set up the non-vcom ones. So july/augest - december you want to set up rotations at the sights you are interested in for residency/internship jsmittyund03 04-19-2006, 08:47 PM Amy or anyone else, Any idea what the dress is like for student day? I don't want to show up in inappropriate attire on the first day down there. PS - Thanks to the parental units that are joining and wanna leave Saturday night, I'm going to have to bow out of the "grabbing a beer" on Saturday. However, I hear Big Al's would be a fun place to go. Amy B 04-20-2006, 09:42 AM Hhhmmm, well let's see.. I wore, i guess you would call it, a "causal business outfit" 2 years ago. It was just slacks and a blouse. Last year people had slacks and polo shirts.. Not dressed up but not jeans and tank tops. Does that help ya? jsmittyund03 04-23-2006, 10:06 AM Sup guys, So I just got back from student day yesterday, it was a good time. Nice to meet some of you guys. For those who didn't make it, just PM me, I'll answer any questions you guys have about it. It was pretty much exactly like their itinerary. Probably the best part about it (besides meeting some of our future classmates) was the financial aid presentation, which was very informative. It was also hugely depressing:). But those who weren't there are required to go to the same presentation when school starts, so you didn't miss anything important. Also, the class of 2010 was invited to a white water rafting trip along with classes 2009 and 2008 on memorial day weekend. It's in WV and costs 40 bones. I didn't get the guy's email address b/c I couldn't make it, but just call up the school and they'll get it for you. What a teaser, now we have to wait four more months before school starts. BayRunner 04-23-2006, 08:44 PM Not to my knowledge, and I sure hope not. As of right now, I believe we only need to have a BLS certification. A friend of mine had read somewhere that classes in the past had to memorize all the bones, muscles, etc. before matriculation. Is this true of the class of 2010? Thanks!!!!! I asked that question on Saturday and was told that Dr Anderson (Anatomy Chair) will be sending each MSI a recommended reading list and a list of terminology within the next month or so. Although not required, she strongly recommends a pretty thorough review as it was stated that it will be assumed that everyone will have been exposed to terminology and the different systems. If you have had anatomy already, the review should be minimal. Thanks!!!!! guys relax! enjoy what's left of your freedom and life. you can run off and learn bones, muscles, bio chem, and whatever else now, or you can not think about school. sure learning some stuff before hand would be nice, but you won't learn it to the level that you are expected to know it and your hard prework won't get you any more time off when school starts. So my vote is to enjoy your time off now. lay in the sun, read a good book, exercise, and spend time with your family and friends. school will be here soon enough. I guess I could call them, but I think hearing a student opinion is more entertaining. Thanks for the help and info! Avoid NTC at all costs if possible. If the place you are living at lets you choose, I would recommend Adelphia. Several of my friends have NTC and they are always having problems with it; it goes down for a couple days at a time, isn't consistent, and is expensive. It use to be $40 dollars a month per bedroom; not sure what it is now. We have Adelphia and it rarely if ever goes down. It's cheaper for us too since we split 1 bill 4 ways($106 for cable/internet so about $26 a person) instead of having to pay $40 individually just for internet. I'm not sure if it would be as cheap or cheaper then NTC if you were living alone or with only 1 other person. However, you get what you pay for, so I think it would be worth the extra cost in my opinion. I've actually been choosing between apartments by looking at what internet service I'm allowed to get. Amy B 04-28-2006, 07:38 AM We also have adelphia and rarely have any issues. surfnvb7 04-29-2006, 06:16 PM absolutely, avoid NTC if you can. i think NTC operates on a dedicated DSL line, so its slower than Adelphia for one. also they have FTP sites and other things firewalled/blocked out so you cant access them and slow their servers down. the system seems to go down for long periods of time due to anything minor weather related. years ago the place i had with NTC only had like 30 channels. kind of annoying. adelphia seems to have issues in early september when they have thousands of new connections with people moving back into town and ordering new service. but it seems to work itself out. i pay about $120 with taxes, that includes high speed internet, regular cable (ch 1-70), digital cable (ch 70-160), then 10 HBO's and 10 Cinemax's. its a good deal compared to what ive seen in some cities. RobbingReality 05-01-2006, 01:51 PM I am having a hard time finding an apartment that will accept a 70 lbs dog, does anyone have any suggestions (besides getting rid of the dog)? I have checked out vcom's housing website with no luck. surfnvb7 05-01-2006, 10:05 PM you might not be able to find an apartment for a dog that big. i would try contacting some rental companies like Townside, Raines, etc. They also have rental houses available, in which you can have pretty much anything you want. Just tell them you will be a medical student, and the dog requirement, and they will look through all possible apartments/townhouses/houses etc to find a place that matches your criteria. They are pretty good when it comes to servicing the needs of professional people and graduate students. jay5032 05-02-2006, 08:38 AM I'm in the 2008 class and my wife and I are selling our 3BR 2.5BA Townhome. www.macneal.org Jackie2010 05-02-2006, 06:35 PM Avoid NTC at all costs if possible. Hmmm...$120 a month - do you med students really have the time to watch tv too? I really want to know these things! to answer your question, how much TV you watch in med school depends on how much tv you watch now. My TV shows are my break time. Since I LOVE my break--non-study time, I watch them when they come on. However, I have several classmates that will NOT watch tv the night before a test and depend on their VCR and/or friends to record the shows for them. With Adelphia, I pay $115ish for internet, digital cable and 1 movie channel. If you can live w/o the movie channel then I suggest dropping that and the digital cable (which you have to have inorder to get the movie channels) However, most of you are going to be new customers so check out what specials adelphia has. And while adelphia is totally overpriced, they are 100x better than NTC. NTC not only charges insane amounts of money for what they offer, they also charge per a room. So if it's just you in a 2 bedroom apt or 2 ppl in a 3 bedroom, you will be charged for an extra person that isn't there. jsmittyund03 05-05-2006, 05:17 AM Any idea if they have HD available? See you all in August! LMG908 06-01-2006, 05:12 AM NTC (or whatever their new name is) is still probably the last thing you want. But unless things have drastically changed, I don't think you have a choice. NTC has a contract with certain apartment complexes and thats your only cable, internet, and local phone choice. Things to pay attention to (which may or may not still be true). 1) internet is charged per room, not per roommate. If you have 2 ppl living in a 3 bedroom you might be paying on a scale for 3 not 2. 2) movie channels may not be available. 3) if you really don't need a local phone why pay for it, unless its included in the package and you dont get a choice. Most students I know only have a cell phone and have no need for a local phone. Most of the apartments complexes around Tech have the contract with NTC. And the only way to avoid them is to simply not live there. Good Luck with figuring out all the details. Ok, from what I understand, NTC is the last thing students want. Jonathan Amy B 06-30-2006, 08:52 AM Hi, We have not been given individules stats, but a small percentage of the 2007 did not pass the COMLEX. There can be a huge variety of reasons for that. And one person scored as one of the highest scorers on the USMLE in the nation (that is impressive). The 2008 class is gearing up and studying their butts off now. We have a bunch of people taking it on July 10 or 13. And then the rest are the 2nd week of aug or sept 19. So stay tuned for our scores  I will also tell you as I prepare I am amazed at all the stuff I have learned over these past 2 years. When doing the Qbank (USMLE and COMLEX), it is very rare when I come across something that I have never seen or heard about in some class. So I am confident. ALthough I wish I had about another 3 months to study for 20 hours a day. gyme 07-06-2006, 11:49 AM Just accepted off the wait list this morning I'm sooo relieved and excited to be a 2010 VCOMer. Does anyone know when the first day class/orientation/matriculation is? Nice, Congrats, and you still have time to square things away. Orientation is August 16th. Here's our classes' website (http://www.vcom.vt.edu/2010), I'm guessing the book list/schedule will be put up here shortly. Congratulations! ChEdog 07-11-2006, 07:32 AM Most of you probably already know, but just in case you didn't, the booklist for Block 1 is available. Check your VCOM email.. Are you guys/girls gonna buy all the "required" books? If so, where from? The bookstore during orientation or online like at amazon? Are you guys/girls gonna buy all the "required" books? If so, where from? The bookstore during orientation or online like at amazon? I mentioned before to wait to talk to current students to see if they really recommend the books (rather than wasting your money). But if you are convinced you need all the books b/c its med school and you are going to start it off right b/c after all its med school (one gets over that line of thought real quick, by the way), then another source to get your books from is from current students. Students often advertise their books on the VCOM announcements. In addition, there are often advertisements for furniture and other stuff. http://www.vcomstudent.com/announcements/ OhNoNotAgain 07-11-2006, 01:18 PM Well, is it possible that a current "anonymous" student can post on here what we should/shouldn't buy? I don't know any current students..... LMG908 07-12-2006, 06:38 AM Well, is it possible that a current "anonymous" student can post on here what we should/shouldn't buy? I don't know any current students..... Can you post the book list? or a link to the list? From memory, buy the required anatomy books. Don't bother with the required micro, histology, biochem, and immuno. I do recommend Micro Made Ridiculously Simple and several of the Board Review Series books (Phys, Path(2nd year)). Personally I have never used the required PPC/OMM books, but I think they will be more handy during clinical rotations and they are referred to A LOT. I am posting for a 2008 classmate. :) """"" I have a 2 bedroom (950 sq foot) apartment available in Foxridge. It is on the second floor and very quiet. The carpet and bathroom fixtures are all new. My current rent is $719/month, BUT because I need to move this week, I worked out a deal with Foxridge to give a rent concession on this apartment. The rent concession will reduce the cost of the apartment to $649/month and in addition, I am throwing in $50/month for 12 months. YOU WOULD BE GETTING THIS APARTMENT FOR $600/month ($300/person)... The apartment is available now!!! email me at msbutts@yahoo.com if you are interested. """"" As to books, I bought them all and actually used them all to adlib to the lectures. You will have to try what works for you and that may take some time but you will get into a flow. Are you guys/girls gonna buy all the "required" books? If so, where from? The bookstore during orientation or online like at amazon? I bought them all on Amazon for less than $500. Although you may not use the books that much during class, some of the students that I have heard from wish they had copies of the material to use as a reference when studying for boards. Guess it depends on your learning style and what works for you. If anything I am planning on using the books to supplement the lectures and to have just in case... I have heard good things about the "Made Ridiculously Simple" set of books.... Do you recommend any others out of that series? I haven't actually heard a lot about that series other than the Micro. Maybe I heard something good about the cardiology/EKG book. But really Dubin is almost a bible when it comes to EKGs, so I'm not sure it's necessary. And definatly not necessary for Block 1. LMG908 07-14-2006, 02:50 PM Please bare in mind that these are my suggestions/opinions. I am a student who came in with a fair amount of science background and still have my college books (which I didn't use either). My general opinion is that almost all the information you need to know is given to you in the lecture power points. Coico, R., Sunshine, G., Benjamini, E. (2003) Immunology, A Short Course, 5th Edition, Wiley-Liss. ISBN: 0-471-22689-0 -- I did not use an immuno book, but I have some friends that found it helpful. Moore, K. L. and Persaud, T. V. N. (2003). The Developing Human, 7th edition. W. B. Saunders Company, Philadelphia. ISBN: 0-7216-9412-8 -- Blah, don't bother. The prof's notes are great Turnpenny, P. and Ellard, S. (2005). Basic Medical Biochemistry, 2nd edition,. Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins. ISBN 0-7817-2145-8 -- the biochem prof is great, I think there is no need for the book Marks, Dawn, (1998). Medical Microbiology, 5th ed. Mosby Pub. ISBN 0-323-03303-2 -- get the Micro Made Ridiculously Simple instead American Medical Association (2004). Code of Medical Ethics: Current Opinions with Annotations, 2004-2005. ISBN 1-57947-561-2 -- worthless stupid book; however, there is a new ethics person. I still say don't buy it till you KNOW you have to. Otherwise, there's a copy in the library Swartz, M. (2006). Textbook of Physical Diagnosis, 5th edition. Elsevier Publishing. ISBN 13 9781416003076 -- I heard there was a new book for you all; this is it. So I don't know. Ward, R.C. Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine, 2nd ed. (2003). Lippencott, Williams and Wilkens. ISBN 0-7817-3497-5 -- worthless stupid book. Maybe (and that's a really big maybe) it will be useful for rotations, but if there's a reading assignment (I think we read the first chapters on the history of osteopathy) get it from the library. Hope that helps. Let me/us know if you have any other questions. Amy B 07-14-2006, 03:32 PM I would suggest buying your books used. That way if you find out you dont like them or dont use them you will only lose a small amount of money. I personally like the books. But I guess |
