Hi everyone. Just sent in my deposit for LECOM - erie... Whoo.

I've been hopelessly addicted to these forums for way too long without ever posting anything...

Now that the fear and loathing that is the application process into medical school is over, I feel like it's time for my first post!

So... In response to a prior question about late interviews, I was interviewed in Erie on March 2 and did not receive my admittance until the very end of march, so there's still hope (i think) for anyone waiting to hear back from LECOM about their status... Good luck to everyone and hope to see many of you in the fall!

As I'm printing out out apt information and getting ready to take a trip to Erie in two weeks I was wondering if any of you encoutered other apts that were not listed. Like, single apts for rent by private owners, etc. Is this kind of thing popular among LECOM students or do people mostly rent from these known, couple apt buildings like Landmark Square, Baldwin Brothers. etc.?

I know at LECOM anatomy lab is prosection, but I heard them mention that if one would like to dissect the cadavers, he/she could apply to do this over the summer. Is this only offered to students after they complete the anatomy course? Can anyone provide information about doing this?

I was told those who got an "A" in anatomy would be offered the opportunity to dissect the cadavers for the next years class.

Also, I took some initiative and started a group for members of the class of 2010 at http://groups.myspace.com/LECOM. Join us!

LECOM is still acepting students, not just interviewing for the alt list. I interviewed 2 weeks ago, got accepted ISP yesterday. And, if you are on the alternate list, there is a good chance. I know 2 2nd years who got in off the list. From what I know, there is usually a lot of movement throughout the next few months.

This is how the bodies get prosected for you. So the summer after first year you can apply to be a dissector. I think it's a 40 hours week at about $6/hr the last I heard. So, yes it's only offered after the anatomy course. The gross lab is not large enough to have bodies at different stages of dissection through out the year. The new "batch" of bodies starts in the summer for the following year. Remember that school there starts the end of July so its a lot of work to do in a short amount of time.

Hey:
I don't know when I'll be moving yet, I don't even have an apt. Did you find a nice apt for yourself already? I'm going to Erie in about a week to check out some places.

Donvb:

lol, yeah the picture will be changed back soon enough!! I WAS a longhorn fan until UTMB-Galveston went from wait-listing me to not even interviewing me the following year! lol I went to a private university in Austin and I currently stay in Houston during the week to serve with Americorps and go to Austin to see my best friend, my brother, and girlfriend's family on the weekends. Speaking of this weekend, I'm turning 24 on saturday!!!!

Whats up with all these LECOM bashing threads?? I say don't bitch, get into the Independent Study Pathway, and then bust your ass studying ( or rather, LEARNING) 8-10 hours a day. I decided to go to LECOM over allopathic schools, "top" DO schools, etc b/c of their ISP program (That and the fact that I've never really seen snow before!)

ckd182

I think that I'm with ya'll...probably move in july 15ish. Too expensive to take a UHAUL from Houston to Erie, so I'll be buying all new furniture, bed, etc... At least my fiance is coming so she can shovel the snow... (hey, I just had back surgery!)

Where is everybody looking at moving in to? -CHRIS

Hi to those headed for Erie. My family has lived here for 5 years now. I'm in ISP starting in July; my sweetie started last July. If we can answer any questions about the area, ISP, or life in Erie, PM us (also if you're looking for used furniture, of which we have a lot!).

All the best to all of you about to tackle Erie for the first time, as well as med school!

I was wondering if you can give me some suggestions regarding apts. I am going to Erie next weekend to look at some apts that take pets. Here are some apts I'll be looking at: Landmark square, Maple Lane, Appletree (Baldwin-Hawthorne), Tanglewood. Any suggestions on those, or other ones I don't know about?
Also how else should we be getting ready for school? Should we be buying books, equipment, atlases, etc. I've heard that we won't use all of the books that are on the list. ???!
Thank you in advance

Since we own our home and have never done the apartment thing, I can't advise you there... Sorry!

With regards to the buying of books and equipment, I can offer this:

If you like to have your own copies of books for your own library, you can probably get them online cheaper than at school. If you don't need to have your own copies, they should be available in the school library, if you actually need them. MOST (not all) of what you need to know will be in the notes/powerpoints that are distributed by your instructors, IF you're in LDP.

Hi everyone, I was accepted a while ago and decided to join in. Where is everyone planning to live? I have looked at a few places down there and talked to a few people from the school. The Appletree apartments seemed nice and I have heard from several people that the Granada Apartments are horrible. If i do a one bedroom I think Appletree may be the way to go. Has anyone else been apartment hunting? What are your thoughts?

Hi: I've been researching the apt info for a while and I'm actually going to look at some places this weekend. Appletree is one of the apts I'm going to look at. I'm also looking at Maplelane, Landmark Square, and some apt that a private person is renting out. My research was a little more specific b/c I need an apt that will take a cat and I guess not too many apts do.
Let me know which apts you think are good?

In addition, I'll be in LDP and never really thought about the other pathways. Does anyone know details about what the differences are, how life in med school actually looks in the other pathways. I usually used the class notes to study and always attended lectures, therefore, chose the same pathway.
What are your thoughts everyone?

I looked at Landmark Square and was a little iffy on them. They are remodeling them and seem to have big plans for their complexes but they didnt seem to be to sure when they would be able to complete them. Also, they were not sure if they would have any 1 bedrooms available before school starts and they currently onle have 1 LECOM student renting from them. The other thing that concerned me was the location and parking. These apartments were in an industrial area and I was a little unsure of the neighberhood, but with all that being said. The interior of the apartments, being newly remodeled, dont look to bad. Let me know what you think when you look at them. I think for the price Appletree has imoressed me the most so far.

I was inside once. Std basic white wall apt. Newly built. Nice. They are located on the corner of Granview/Ellsworth. The school is also on the corner of Grandview/Ellsworth. With the way the parking lot for the school is and the door you enter: It would take you 5 minutes to walk. 2 minutes to drive.

If you have your own insurance stick with that. The LECOM policy is very poor - basically catastrophic coverage. It's not for everyday doctors visits and I don't think it covers OB. And Watch out for the SOMA policy they try to say is "better". I ended up having to get a lawyer my first year to get my bills paid because they refused to cover certain things. Turns out it was a billing/coding error but it took a long time to resolve - huge hassle. Unfortunately you have to have some kind of coverage. The good thing is that Millcreek hospital is basically run by the school so if soething super emergent happens you can go there and not get hassled about the bill. They work with you.

No, I am not retaking the MCAT. I have an acceptance to LECOM which I deferred for a year so I am a member of the c/o 2011. However, I may reapply to a few other schools this year. Why?

I think LECOM is a great school- especially ISP. I just want to really explore my options. And there is no way I am taking the MCAT again, hehe.

Laurel Ridge is right across the street (Ellsworth?)!!! We looked at them, very nice! But they don't accept pets, so they had to be crossed off the list. :( My favorite apartments that were near the school were the Lakeview Townhomes. I would have definitely lived there - again, however, no pets!

From what the landlord said, there are lots of LECOM students that live there. Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure! I was at the apartments for probably half-hour total - they would have been at the top of my list had they allowed pets.

I just got back from Erie and there are not too many options for people that are looking for apts that allow pets. As far as I know Belle and Brookwood Village are only 2 bedrooms (no one bedroom), so won't work for me.
I looked at Landmark Square, Boston Store Place, MapleLane, Appletree, and in a private house that had an apt for rent. I was not really impressed with any of them, but I have to say that I liked Mapleland and Appletree the best. They are nice, cozy apt in a nice area. Not too modern, but the new and modern places don't take pets. I will go with either one of them.
Is anyone thinking of Maplelane or Appletree?

I looked at both Brookwood and Belle Village when I was in Erie a few months ago. I really liked both, but they are a ways from the school compared to some of the other apartments. However, both were very nice and allowed pets!

From what the landlords told me, both places have their fair share of LECOM students, as well as Penn State - Behrend and Mercyhurst. Lots of college-aged kids. I also saw a whole ton of grade school kids waiting for the bus at Brookwood!

I will be living in Belle Village - West. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm planning on moving mid-June to get settled, travel around New England a bit, and go to Creation! :D

I'm sure there are quite a few LECOM students here too. Rememeber that LECOM has a huge student population between the medical school, pharm shcool, and post-bacc program. The above appts will add 10 minutes to your drive and are on the East side of town. I have never been there so I can't say how many students live there or the condition of the buildings.

Everyone needs to remember that Erie gets super cold in the winter. Be sure where you live has good windows, hot water, and try to get the utilities included in your rental agreement. The utility companies have increased their rates tremendously this past winter and it's only going to get worse. Just FYI.

Maplelane are the same as Appletree and they are closer to the school (2 mins), however, the scenery around Appletree is better, more trees, like a little park just like you saw.
hopes it helps
Are you going to live there 2? I'm getting my application on Monday and I guess I'll ask Allen which apts get more of LECOM students this fall.

Yeah, Im thinking that is probably where I will end up going. Im going back down on Thursday to look a last look at a few places and will make a decision then. One of my relatives is dating someone who is starting the pharmacy school this year so Im going to look at the Lakeview townhomes as well, but I would prefer to have my own place so if they dont wow me, I will probably end up at Appletree. Thanks for the info, maybe we will be neighbors. Let me know which apartments he thinks draws more LECOM students.

Thanks,

Anyone in the area already that knows some good, two bedroom small family houses that my wife and I could rent? Shes going to be goin to nursing school at Gannon, and I at LECOM, so a house right in between them would be excellent! If anyone has any links or anything, help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not going to be able to go look at them, we live in Oregon, so were going to have to do a "blind" selection process of our new home!

Just got accepted to the Air Force HPSP program, so I won't have to worry about the financial side of things too much. Any one else out there going to military route to pay for school?

I'm curious about the research at LECOM. Does anyone know much about it - i.e. how many students work as research assistants, how much of a time commitment it is, if students can use electives during the 3rd and 4th year to do research? Any research on OMM?

Any info is appreciated.

Does Belle village have one bedroom apts?

Margaret

I think they only have two bedroom apartments, but I'm not 100% sure. You might give them a call if you are at all interested. They worked out great for us because they are located in betweent LECOM and Penn State - Behrend (where my girlfriend is going) and they allow pets! Anyway, hope your search ends well and you end up living where you want! Let me know if you have anymore questions!

[QUOTE=mjbaker]Just got accepted to the Air Force HPSP program, so I won't have to worry about the financial side of things too much. Any one else out there going to military route to pay for school?

Congratulations on the Air Force HPSP selection. I too will be using the Air Force HPSP. I was confused for a while between the Air Force and Army. I got the Army Feb 7 and Air Force March 24. I think I will be going Air Force route since I'm currently a reserve Medic (for a few more days) in the Air Force.
Let me know if you got a place to stay yet in Erie.
Good luck

Do you guys know when we get our schedule for the fall semester. I went online and they had the 2005 schedule (in detail), but not our schedule.
In addition, are any of you buying any books off of the list? any supplies that we need?
I heard it's mostly notes that we will use, but who knows.

If you are LDP, don't buy any books EXCEPT the anatomy atlas (it's required for lab) and the OMM book (they test out of the book without presenting that material) You don't have to worry about books until you get there. Plus, if you are super tight on money they have all the texts in the library to check out. Don't waste your time. I bought certain texts like anatomy, atlas, path, embryo just because I had interest and found them helpful. THe other courses the powerpoints are tested from. Plus they pretty much tell you what slides to study.

I love Netter, it's easy to follow when in the lab. I also bought Clemente - it's more detailed but better as a reference. There is also an atlas that is actual photos of dissections. Some people just studies from that book instead of spending all their time in the lab. (I checked it out of the library)

Look for the book list under the bookstore link off the LECOM website. Sara is usually pretty good about keeping it updated as soon as she knows. You can order books from her directly if you don't want to wait. However, I think they charge an outrageous shipping for minor items. Be sure to check.

I e-mailed Sara today. She said that the list wouldn't be out until at least June. She said that most of the books will be the same, but there are always changes, so we shouldn't count on using the old list (possible expensive oops). I'm just using the old list to prepare for budgeting for books.

When I enter LECOM in the fall of 2007 I will be living alone. Although I will be 24, I have never been into the bar/hardcore party scene. I enjoy hanging out with people who also aren't into that. And I have lots of friends from 30-80! So I also, worry about this.

I'll be living with my girlfriend of 2 years. I'll be 26 and she will be 28. We've both pretty much grown out of the bar/keg scene too! For a change of pace, we'll head downtown for a beer or two every now and then. I'll go to the bars as long as they're smoke-free and not overly crowded. Other than that, I'd just as soon have some friends over, drink a few brews and play cards in my smokeless apartment!

I am an MS1 (2009) at Lecom Erie and my current roommate is moving out. I live in the Lakeview (Maleno) Townhomes which are 2 minutes from the school and I think they are one of the best places to live here. They have a gym and pool on site, which are both nice. The house is 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, kitchen, garage, and deck. It is really nice for the price and a garage is key in Erie. The house is $715 w/o gas, cable, and electric (307.50 rent per person). If anyone is interested please let me know and I can give you more details.
Thanks!

The house I live in will be available. I am moving June 13th, I have lived here for 5 years. My landlord is great and easy going. A large old farmhouse. It's a 3 bedroom/2 bath. Den, dining, living, office, full basement (unfinished). Kitchen is huge -almost the size of a garage. No kidding!! My kids practice thier skateboarding. 1.5 acres of lawn. 7 minutes to LECOM. 2 minutes to the MALL. Right on I-79 for access to everywhere in town. 10 minutes to Gannon. $900/mo + utilities. I pay my rent every 6 months when the loan checks come. It is affordable if you have a spouse who works. Great house if you have kids. No pets.

PM me if interested and I will forward you to my landlord.

Vet?? unsure
Cell phone? most my friends have verizon
Reg phone? No choice. Verizon only. Be careful with their plans, you have to specify unlimited local calls or they will charge you for each call. That goes for every time your computer dials too. You can rack up a huge bill and not even know it. (I got burned when I first moved here).

Cable? I really like Adelphia, plus they are slow when you stop service so you end up with about 2 months free cable until their people come around.

Electric? No Choice (Penelec)
Gas? No Choice. (National Fuel) It's cheaper to run electric heaters than heat with gas. If you have a huge house it is cheaper to do balanced billing. Otherwise you have a $400/mo bills in the Winter. Also, they only read the meter every other month so the months inbetween are estimates. I found the estimates to be higher so I just paid a portion until the "real" bill came next cycle.

Hope that helps

Vet - Not sure about a vet, but something I need to look into...
Cell - I'm going with T-mobile prepaid since I don't use it all that often.
Phone - We're doing VOIP through Sunrocket - something you might look into. We haven't had any problems and it's $199/yr prepaid for unlimited usage. But it does go through your cable modem or dsl, so you need that too.
Cable/Internet - I've heard Adelphia is the only one, at least at Belle Village where I'm living.
Electric/Gas - only one choice.

I've used U-haul before with no problems (from Phoenix, AZ to Whitefish, MT), although I have heard horror stories from other people about them breaking down, etc. etc... For our move out to Erie, we are using Budget. When comparing prices we found that we could get the Budget truck for $300 less than U-haul! I guess the price depends on the supply of trucks in the area and the demand for trucks where you're going. You might check all the usuals: U-haul, Budget, Penske, and Ryder in addition to any others you might know about! See you soon!

LECOM requires that you have some form of health insurance whether it be your own policy, your parents, or your spouse. If you have your own you have to provide a copy of your current card and fill out the waiver. If you don't have your own then you have to buy their policy. I know the coverage isn't that great but its better than nothing. I have heard horror stories about pregnancy not being covered and I recall from a lecture I went to the max lifetime payout is like $150,000. Now if you get injured and end up in ICU, that only covers about 10 days of care. It's a bad policy. However, if anyone approaches you about the SOMA policy - it is worse. The company comes up with any excuse to deny claims. I had it for one semester and changed quickly when my claims were denied for $1000's and I had to get a lawyer to eventually get it paid.

Bottom line: If you can maintain your own insurance. DO IT

Can someone please explain to me the details of setting up your rotations with LECOM? How many students do their rotations away from the school and how many stay in the area? What is the selection process like and how difficult is it to accomplish (setting up the rotations)? I have the list of affiliate hospitals and vaguely have an idea of how it works. I would say about 80% of students do their rotations away from Erie. If you have the affiliate list and want to do your rotations from that list you just let the clinical ed dept know by the online rotation approval form and put in that hospital for the rotation slot depending on which group you are in. If you want to do your own rotations outside of the affiliates then it is up to you to see if that hospital (say Las Vegas) will take you, you do the paperwork and get it approved on the other end. Once they have told you yes and you have paid your fee, etc to them. Then you do the online rotation approval form and go to your rotation, wherever it may be. If you do a rotation outside of the affiliate list it is up to you to find your own housing and get yourself there. I have done rotations all over the country so if anyone wants to PM me feel free. If you feel you are planning on trying to get an allopathic residency as a DO then it is wise to do a rotation at that hospital site and be seen. Plus you must be very organized, most rotations are schedule 10 - 12 months in advance. I tried to get rotations in California 10 months ahead and they were already filled. The way the rotation groups are set up, the entire class is divided into 13 rotation groups, each group has approx 17 students. Within that group there are usually 4 Erie people, 4 Ohio, 4 Michigan, 2 Pittsburgh, 2 Eastern PA, and 2 floaters. So, for instance, the Erie people have first dibs on the hospitals in Erie and once they decide for that rotation slot then its open to the rest of the group. Everyone takes turns to get that dream rotation they want since there are certain afflilate hospitals that MUST be filled by a LECOM student for every rotation. ONce those are filled then the others in the group are free to pick in another area or go somewhere else in the country. (I hope that's not too confusing) I think it's changed a little bit since I set up rotations. Anyhow, it's easy, don't stress about it. PM me if others have questions.

The first week or so you will need to sit alphabetical because all three pathways start lecture together. "A" sits in the front cornet by the podium and then it winds row by row. T's usually are on the second tier (about the 12th row). Remember that the screen is something like 30 feet high and you can always plug in your laptop at your seat and follow the lecture that way to type notes as they talk. And, yes, the room is wired so the volume is the same wherever you seat. If you want to change seats, you can switch with someone down front and put in the paperwork so they know where you are when attendance is taken. Not to worry.

Oh it's the easiest to do ALL your rotations in Erie!!!!!!

That's what I have heard- but how about quality rotations (i.e. not Milcreek hospital rotations)?

Yeah there is Hamot which has great rotations and there is St. Vincents too. This is just what I've heard from my classmates. They seemed to have very good experiences at Hamot and it's a trauma center.

I did almost all of my third year rotations at Millcreek. It's not that bad and you get to do as much or as little as you want. I have had both good and bad at St Vincent and Hamot. It's really the luck of the draw I think. I also did many of my rotations at the various clinics in Erie which gives you great opportunity to learn a lot since you are usually the only student. IF you want to stay in Erie, its super super easy. Not to worry. I had to stay in Erie for most of mine since I have small children in school and I wanted to be home in the evening. Also, having rotations in Erie - NO CALL and the latest I was ever home was 5:30pm. Most rotations I was home by 3, which is great when you just doing a required rotation and are just putting in your time.

rotations affiliates (http://www.lecom.edu/lecom/application/rotations.asp)

Here is the link for the rotations affiliates. Any hospital not on the list you would have to set up yourself as I stated in my previous rotations post.

So I just got my laptop today and I realized that I ordered the wrong edition of microsoft office. I got the basic edition and it doesnt have powerpoint. We need powerpoint don't we? Is there any way I can just buy powerpoint or do I have to buy the whole thing? I'd appreciate any help you can give. I am such a moron when it comes to computers.

Just find a friend with the student edition of MS Word (or deluxe, etc.). Do a fresh install that way. You can also buy the student edition fairly cheaply.

Shouldn't your concern be for the class of 2011? You can always quit your masters program and join the crowd ;) .

I would but:
A) I enjoy my MS program too much.
B) Having a MS in counseling may help me get a better psychiatry residency.

In regards to the homework assignment, I would like to see if they have retired it for the c/o 2010.

DO IT
We are required to use the plan provided by LECOM (Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO Blue). The only other options are if you are covered by a parent, spouse, or military. However, we just received a notice that our plan would be improved for the coming year (slightly more expensive, of course...its $160/mo.).

Do you have the web link to the details of this plan (either via BCBS or LECOM)?

What's the deal with needing a mumps titer now???? I did all me medical stuff already and sent it in months ago!!! Now we need a mumps titer?? uuuuugggghhhhh.

Anyone have any recommendations/ suggestions about good banks in the area?

Doctortobee

Go with PNC bank...They are everywhere in Erie and there's an PNC ATM at school. Also the loan money from the school is or used to be a PNC check. That means no waiting for the check to clear since it will be a PNC to PNC transaction. Plus they have a student account with no fees.

As far as the mumps thing...probably because there was a recent outbreak of mumps in the midwest

can any current LECOMers tell me how the loan money works? Do we get a check for the whole amount (minus tuition) the first week of class? When I got my loan letter there was something about half the funds being given in August, and the other half in the winter??? Just wondering when I can start spending, lol.

DON'T SPEND NOW! You need to save...you'll get a cut in August or so. About 3-4 weeks after school starts. Then you'll get another check for 2nd semester.

Hey:
Sorry, i'm asking about this now, was in Mexico using up what's left of my free time, but these hospitals that you listed...do they accept LECOM students for rotations? Is the school somehow affiliated with them?
I work for Advocate Lutheran General now (in the E.R.) and it is an awesome hospital, it would be nice to come back here for rotations.

That is a list of places that LECOM students are rotating in. If they let one student rotate they have to let others from the same school rotate if there's room. So yes, those are considered affiliated hospitals. IMO.

EDIT: Ooops! I was confused. Matchlist is for residencies only. Of course, if you do your rotation at a particular hospital you have a good chance if you apply for their residency program.

The above list is the (almost complete) match list for the class of 2006, I found it on our server. That does not mean they are all affilliates of Lecom, though as a fourth year student, you can rotate at almost all residency programs providing your schedules match. This is sometimes difficult b/c we have a strict month to month schedule.

From Fairview to LECOM is minimum 30 minute drive. That in itself is not that bad in the summer but you have to remember that Erie has blizzards and the weather is no excuse to miss class at LECOM. No Kidding!! It would be miserable in the winter for the both of you expeically when the weather is bad. Yes, there is a bus system in Erie but I have no idea if there is a bus to fairview? Doubt it. I would try to live closer. My house is 7 minutes to LECOM and during the winter when the weather is bad, its very dangerous and sometime I wish I lived closer.

I checked Brookwood out back in January. They were really nice compared to some of the other places I looked at. Plus they accept pets, which is a bonus for me. I looked at them fairly early in the morning and there were a ton of little kids getting waiting for the bus. Might be a good thing if you have kids of your own. The landlord told me that there are alot of students there - Penn State-Behrend, Mercyhurst, and LECOM - which could or could not be a good thing depending on how loud parties get!

As for me, my girlfriend and I are living right next door to Brookwood at a place called Belle Village. They just built a few new townhouses that are ready to be rented. They accept pets too! The landlord, Julie, is very nice and will work with you on your lease. Let me know if you have any more questions that I might be able to answer.

The newpaper article says that only 6 people will be accepted into the 3 year program. It's year round with no breaks like the pharm program. I am sure that LECOM will monitor the match progress of those six and will not issue a diploma if those students don't match in FP. They will find a way to force those in the accelerated program to stay with that track. You would probably have to sign a binding contract at the start of the program and would be sued for breech on contract should you want out. I would not put it past the school. I would not even go into it thinking a switch would be possible later. No worth it. Do the extra year if you are not sure.

Just curious. I wouldn't want to attend school year round. But can't a current practicing family physician go back and do residency in another specialty if they don't want to do family medicine anymore?

Yes. That is another loophole.

I commend LECOM for trying to proactively deal with the shortage of FPs. However, even if they force you to do a FP residency, they cannot follow you around for the rest of your life to make sure you are still a FP. So, I guess like if you wanted to be a cardiologist, you could do a IM residency and then do a cardio fellowship in this program, technically.

I think perhaps a better approach would be some type of guaranteed FP residency program. For instance, they may have FP residencies from around the country agree to guarantee a spot for graudates of a "FP track" program, that is still the typical 4 year DO program. This way, you would be guaranteed that 95% of the applicants for that program would really want to go into FP.

Doctortobee
05-27-2006, 04:38 PM
From what I've heard, you only get 1 funded residency spot. So if you would want to do a 2nd residency, you wouldn't get $$. Now if you wanted a surgery residency initially, you get funded for 4 years. If you decide that you don't like that and want to switch to a 3 year FP residency you can because you were "funded" for 4 years.

This is just what I've heard...

What's the difference with the BS/MD 6 year programs? THey are completing their undergrad in <2 years...

I did since I was looking for the apartment up there anyways, but they dont actually give it to you, just take a picture and will give you id and the parking pass during orientation, so I think it can wait. Also, they send you to configure your laptop, but all they did for me was they wrote down serial number and checked if there was antivirus installed - not much configuring, took about 5 minutes  :)

I talked to Cinda earlier today and she said that if you want to change that you need to put it in writing. Emailing Elaine Morse is fine. ISP and PBL are full at the moment, but I think that there's not really any problems to switch into LDP. I guess I see that one as the default pathway anyway, since it is the largest one.

I'm enrolled in the ISP program which I feel is best for me because it enables you to work on your own without being forced to stay in class.

Most med students prefer not to go to class because it is often more efficient time management to study your notes. The LDP Program at LECOM requires that you be in class every day, which limits your study time.

If you are the kind of person that is self motivated and very disciplined, I would stay in the ISP Program.

By the way, do you need a roomate? I would prefer rooming with another ISP or LDP student.

If anyone is still looking for a place to live, this older couple who are renting two large bedrooms both with private baths still have one bedroom to rent (at least the last time I talked to them they were). I am renting the other one for $400/mth, no utilities, with all appliances. Just send me a private IM and I can give you more details if interested and a number to call.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I am currently on the waiting list for starting in the fall and i have not received any news regarding my status. I have sent in several interest letters, a rec from a DO doctor, updated transcript, and an additional prof letter to add to my file. How can we find out our status? Has anyone been accepted off the current waiting list? And if so, could you tell me what your stats are so I could get a good idea if I should start reapplying for next year? Thanks!

Also, is it okay to email Elaine Morse and ask about my status or ask her about my chances of being accepted this summer?

Not related to your question but I recommend submitting your re-application now just in case things don't work out. That way you're not going to be behind other applicants.

Does anyone know of any place that open 24/7 that students can study at since LECOM closes at 11PM? Also, LECOM's lecture are on MP3 for download from the web right? Thanks.

You should call every week to check on your status. You can definitely e-mail Elaine Morse too and she will respond. They may not tell you anything but keep trying...it worked for me. I was on the wait list back in May. I called every week for a couple of months and finally on May 16 they told me I was on the wait list...and in the top ten of the list. Elaine Morse told me to hold tight and that I had a very good chance of getting in. Then I received a phone call on May 22 and I was accepted! My stats are GPA - 3.85 and MCAT - 25. Good luck!

I've actually never been so excited or nervous about anything in my life! I'm sure the excitement and nervousness will be replaced by agony and exhaustion a few weeks in but hey, I'll enjoy the excited anticipation while it lasts ;)

I've also lead a pretty sheltered life I think, I've never actually lived more than 60 miles from my parents and I'm kind of a mommy's and daddy's girl so living two states over will be just one of many tests of independence I guess!

I feel the exact same way!! I'm really excited to start but I'm nervous because I have no idea what to expect. For me it's worse than going to college because I at least knew a few people but this time I don't know anyone. I too have lead a sheltered life and will still lead a sheltered life because I am only moving 3 hours away from my family so we'll see how my test of independence goes. :)

Hey

I paid attention in class so I actually got something out of it. Sometimes I drifted. I do have to say that I NEVER pulled an all nighter and was in bed every night by 10-11pm. I would come home from class, grab dinner/snack and hit the books. I'm very good with time management so I made sure I got to see all my favorite TV shows. Yea there are nights when you just CAN"T study. I hit it pretty hard on the weekends. Got up around 8-9am and studied until 7pm or so with breaks. You'll here people say that you have to make time for yourself each day and find something you enjoy doing. I thought that was nuts how could I NOT do that...it's tough. You'll have to pull yourself away from the books or you will go nuts.

In LDP there will be plenty of days where you get out at noon or just have a 3/4 day. That makes a huge difference. Some classes you have to put in the extra time and other classes you don't study that much for. It all depends on your strengths and weaknesses.

Don't expect to pass every exam/quiz/practice. At one point you'll fail something or come close to it. Nobody's perfect. All the pre-meds are used to getting straight A's. Some of you will struggle with getting your first C. It happens and get past it.

Feel free to PM me at any time.

Does anyone suggest buying a backpack/laptop carrier? Or is it better to just buy a laptop carrier and keep your books in your locker? Sorry, I'm pretty ignorant about this and I don't want to spend a lot of money on something I don't need. I ended up going with a laptop that has a widescreen (17") which sounds like it'd be really huge and heavy but it's actually extremely light and thin. However, I looked at Fry's electronics and couldn't find any backpack-laptop carriers that could hold a 17-incher but that doesn't mean there aren't any anywhere else. Anyone have any suggestions?

Everyone needs to quit stressing about the dress code. For the guys just wear nice slacks/pants with a shirt and tie. Don't forget the tie but the rest is really variable.

And for girls who think flip-flops are ok, they are not. You will be stopped at the door and sent home.

Congrats to all of the incoming LECOM students. I am a current graduate in LECOMs Class of 2006. Enjoy the great feelings you have about entering the field of medicine. Those feelings pass soon after the first day of class. The honeymoon will be over and the work will begin. You won't feel those feelings again until graduation day... at least not to the same extent. I can tell you it feels even sweeter once you walk across that stage. Of course, my honeymoon is soon to end as well, with first day of residency starting this week.

Anyway, if any of you are still looking for a place to live, you may want to check this place out. <www.geocities.com/rob1175> Contact information is on the website. Again, congrats and best of luck. Its a great journey. ;)

what are most girls planning to wear to orientation/classes? I'm a super casual person so I'll probably take it as casual as I can get. When I worked in a private doctor's office I could get away with khakis or other casual but nice pants, along with a button down shirt (un-tucked!!) or polo shirt. Is this feasible? What about nicer tee shirts (not logos)???? I really don't plan on getting too fancy--how about everyone else? I know the tie thing is annoying for guys, but at least you know exactly what you're supposed to be wearing!

I don't think your problem is knowing what to wear. It's just because you ladies can manipulate the rules while us guys can't. ;) If you want to make it simple for yourself you can always wear business attire (i.e., suit and blouse with high heels?).

I was wondering about the dress code for girls, too. I think that as we go along we'll learn what is allowed and what is not. I would say a nice, plain tee shirt with a pair of dressy pants will fly too. I have been wearing scrubs to work for the past 6 years and then mostly casual clothes, so I had to do some shopping for clothes for our school's dress code.

what are most girls planning to wear to orientation/classes? I'm a super casual person so I'll probably take it as casual as I can get. When I worked in a private doctor's office I could get away with khakis or other casual but nice pants, along with a button down shirt (un-tucked!!) or polo shirt. Is this feasible? What about nicer tee shirts (not logos)???? I really don't plan on getting too fancy--how about everyone else? I know the tie thing is annoying for guys, but at least you know exactly what you're supposed to be wearing!

You will not get away with the T-shirt thing. I would rethink your idea of going super casual. I can tell you that you will be talked to during orientation and probably at the door. LECOM does not hesitate to let you know if your clothes are not business - especially if Dr. Sylvia sees you. Just be aware of what is acceptable and what isn't.

I would wear a nice dressy t-shirt and never had a problem with it. It didn't look like a tshirt, just a plain shirt. Button down shirts and dress pants are fine. Same with polo shirts.

Just don't wear open toed shoes!!!

I don't see the big deal. Just get used to dressing business casual and business formal. You will be doing it for the rest of your life. It will also give you more self confidence.

The problem is "business casual" is very vague for women. What is appropriate in one place may not be appropriate at LECOM. I'd be interested to know what current/foremer LECOM female students wore. Obviously I get the no open toed shoes. For a button down shirt, does it have to be tucked in? What if it is shorter and difficult to tuck in?

Best way is to look at the pictures posted in the "news" and "events" sections on LECOM's website. There are tons of pictures of events you can look at to get an idea of what's acceptable.

Hey C/O 2010, congrats for getting in, we can't wait to meet you all! As for the dress code question that I see, it is a little harder on guys than girls. Yes, there are some things you can't get away with, but the majority of the girls had no problems with any faculty as long as they looked nice (i.e. khakis and polo shirts) Truthfully, the dress code is a bend but not break philosophy for ladies at LECOM. They will tell you they will send you home, but as long as you aren't wearing flip flops and wrinkled up clothes you will be fine! Feel free to ask me anything, I'll be glad to help! But guys, gotta wear the ties, no way around it.

hope to meet you all, enjoy these last few weeks!!!

It was just a profile of the class of 2009 and it listed a bunch of suggestions on how to survive medical school and such. There was also a list of clubs, an order form for a "Class of 2010" T-shirt, and a paper about SOMA.

I know I must seem like a complete and utter crazy person when I post this but I am actually excited to get back to studying again! I am a dork I know but I have been able to enjoy these last few months, working only about 10 hrs/week and partying and relaxing the rest of the time!! (I'm sure people probably hate me for that last comment ;) I'm the type of person that needs some sort of schedule though and I tend to get antsy when I have a lot of free time on my hands and don't know what to do with it. However, I've been squeezing in as much fun as I possibly can this past month so far and am planning on squeezing in some more before it's time to hit the books! :D

Thank you!! I look forward to meeting everyone as well. I'm excited about orientation and getting to know many people who I will be spending the next couple of years with (at least). However, I probably will be kind of dragging because my brother's wedding is Saturday, the 29th and I'm a bridesmaid. I'm going to try to limit the alcohol consumption though :( and try to have as much fun as I can at the reception while putting in some solid sleep as I will have to get up at the a** crack of 4:30 to be there on Sunday at the appropriate time (I'm from Indianapolis). My mom said that she will be doing nothing but crying that weekend since her son is getting married (happy tears) but her daughter is leaving her. My mom tends to be a little dramatic. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Yeah I noticed no certificates came up. I just printed each of the pages with how many I got correct and the final form at the end just in case they want to see that when we pick up our IDs.

You have to read a bunch of rules regarding security, parking, badge colors, which doors to enter and exit and how, etc... then take a quiz. You have to pass.

I know it's REALLY early to be asking this question and most people might not know this but am I correct in concluding that we can only do our core clinical rotations at specific LECOM-affiliated hospitals but can do our electives at any site we want? I'm not so sure that's right but it seemed like that's what the website said. I'm sure I'll be finding this info out later but I'm just too curious to wait!

from what I understand you can do all your rotations at ANY hospital. HOWEVER, for elective rotations the hospital only has to accept YOU. If you want to do a core rotation at a non=affiliated hospital, they have to agree to accept any LECOM student from that point on. That's my understanding anyway.

Hello all,
I guess I'm one of the last ones into the class of 2010, as I just received the phone call from Elaine yesterday morning. My name is Jeremy Johnson, and I guess I'll be meeting a whole lot of you at the openhouse and orientation. I plan on heading out to Erie on the 27th, as I have an appointment with security for all of the pictures etc on the 28th. Haven't had much of a chance to look for a place to live, so if anyone is looking for a roommate, or knows of a decent area to live, I wold appreciate a heads up.

THIS is totally untrue. You can actually do a core rotation at a non-affiliated hospital without them taking anyone else. You just have to have a decent reason to want to rotate at that hospital and get it approved before hand. They just do the rules/regulations to cut down on the extra paperwork so the majority of the students stay with the affiliates. The rules are bendable you just have to get permission ahead of time and do all the calls to get accepted on the other end before requesting the site on the LECOM end. It's pretty easy since there are so many LECOM students to place for rotations. Anyone have any questions be sure to PM me if you need help.
