View Full Version : KCUMB class of 2010
nrddct 10-19-2005, 06:40 PM I know its still early in the game but lets hear from those that got accepted and what your plans are. Considering anymore interviews? Any other acceptances? Anyone have to wait till Feb or later for other schools and possibly lose the $2K deposit required at KCUMB?
I'll start. Got my acceptence letter dated Sept 28th!!! Also interviewed at TCOM. Have to wait till Feb for the Texas match. However did poorer on the August MCAT so I'm in limbo right now.
ambernikel 10-24-2005, 11:32 AM KCUMB 2010 Here I come. We are putting together our 1K to put down (yes we're poor). In the mean time just waiting for the slim chance at OSU but I've pretty much made my mind up and, at this point, KCUMB is my TOP CHOICE. The school just fits me and all the docs I work with that went there are awesome... So as my dad likes to sing to me "Kansas City here I come, come, come".
Current KCUMB students, any ideas on good (and inexpensive) housing areas besides downtown? I'm thinking Independence. What do you think about the daily commute?
Thanks!
Doctor Bagel 10-24-2005, 11:54 AM i'm still interviewing and all that good stuff, but going to kcumb seems to be not a too remote possibility. i liked the school more than ccom and comp. we'll see about umdnj-som and dmu, and i'll probably accept an interview offer if i get it from osu.
i probably won't know about ohsu, my state school, until mid to late spring, so i'll have to make a deposit regardless of that.
have you guys thought about where you'd like to live? the plaza seems expensive, but i'd like to live close to that.

I'm trying to figure out the best place for me and my family (no kids just animals) to live. I posted a question about this in the Osteopathic forum for current KCUMB students. I've heard that if you go around the plaza it's cheap but it's not a great neighborhood. Most of my info is from the docs I work with but all of them went there >10 years ago so a lot has changed since.

well, i know the plaza itself is safe, but i can see that the area around it might be a little iffy. i guess i don't really care because safety is not a huge thing with me -- i figure lots of places are safer than people make them out to be. i definitely want a more urban than suburban thing, but we'll see.
we have cats, not dogs, so we don't need much space. :) i saw one super evil complex, though, that required that your cats be declawed. sorry, but i'm not going to mutilate my cats to get a certain apartment. :thumbdown
nrddct 10-28-2005, 10:56 AM Howdy, glad I finally got some reponses. ;) When ya'll say Plaza do you mean century towers? I'm gonna be sending my december deposit in a week or two. Chances are high that I will be going to Kansas right now. CT would be cheap ($300 or so) if I got a roommate but not sure if I want that arrangement. A one bedroom goes for about $500 there. Any other recommendations on where to live?

Nope, I'm talking about the Country Club Plaza, which is really close to Westport, where the recommended hotels were. I don't know about CT, either -- I think it might drive me crazy to live that close to the school and to have all my neighbors be med students. :)
Have you checked out craigslist -- they seem to have lots of apartment listings there.
nrddct 11-02-2005, 06:23 PM no more love for KCUMB
Doctor Bagel 11-03-2005, 11:03 AM no more love for KCUMB
I don't know, I'm conflicted. I'm waiting to hear from DMU and got into COMP and CCOM, so I'm trying to figure out where I should plunk down the deposit. I did really like KCUMB, and Kansas City is definitely doable. My family's in Oklahoma, so it's be nice to be close but not so close that we'd see each other all the time.
nrddct 11-03-2005, 03:21 PM exlawgirl, there does'nt seem to be much enthusiasm for KCUMB. Maybe I should think about applying to more schools? I've interviewed at TCOM and have to wait till Feb for the TX match to take place. I'm sure there are alot of factors to consider when choosing a school, but the most important for me would be the quality of the program. I think TCOM is pretty reputable and has very good residency matches. Couldn't find KCUMBs match list. I always said prior to getting in that I would go where ever accepted me. Now that I got in, I want more options to choose from. ;)
Doctor Bagel 11-03-2005, 03:55 PM Yeah, I'd really like it if they posted their match list. I did find tons of KCUMB grads in the psych program at UMKC, so that's positive -- psych's my top choice. I'm going to have to search out more of the KCUMB scoop. Positives seem to be that it has high board pass rates, cheap cost of living, omm seems to emphasized (maybe?) and they're starting to do more research. Kansas City is a positive for me, too, because it feels sort of homey. It's only about five hours from where I grew up.
Too bad the search is down for everyone except donors.
Tallulah 11-03-2005, 05:46 PM I've got an acceptance from KCUMB, but I'm still waiting for an answer from PCOM, so I'll know by thanksgiving. I loved the school though. The student body and faculty seemed great, and I have a friend going there who loves it. My only problem is the city. I'd rather live in Philadelphia. Also, PCOM's facilities were better than KCUMB's, although I liked the students at Kansas better.
just my 2 cents
DrSmiles 11-04-2005, 07:14 PM Hi guys,
I am from class of 2006, thought I would offer some advice on housing since no one else has chimed in.
Lots of students stayed at CT, but the area is not the best and not very close to shopping from what I understand.
Theres a bunch of "family oriented" students that stayed north of the school and seemed to like it, but I think the commute kind of sucks.
Myself, I stayed close to the plaza, off of Roanoke and 45th. Lots of students stay in that area. I had a one bedroom with A/C for $500. It kind of depends on what you want personally. I liked the plaza area myself.
Hope that helps, good luck!

Cool, thanks, DrSmiles! $500 is so cheap. "Family-oriented" is not my style (my cats don't exactly care what neighborhood I live in :) ), and the Plaza sounds very cool.
nrddct 11-07-2005, 09:17 PM For $500, does that get you a newer apartment around the Plaza. I just want something simple, neat, and clean.
DrSmiles 11-08-2005, 01:27 PM $500 was for a refinished older brick apartment. A lot of the older apartments in the area have been redone and now have better insulation (for noise and heat) and include air conditioning. The closer you get to the actual Plaza, the higher the rent. But there are lots of apartments within walking distance to the plaza for a fairly decent price. Many of them will take pets too. If you go straight down Roanoke Street you will find lots of reasonably priced apartments. This is 6 miles from the school and only a few blocks from the plaza.
kelldoc 11-12-2005, 09:31 PM I guess I will throw in my two cents. I am from the class of 2006, therefore a 4th year student. The curriculum at KCUMB is top notch. I was incredibly impressed as I went through my first two years of medical education. I also would like to add that I have done great on both USMLE and COMLEX board examinations, and I contribute this to the fantastic curriculum at KCUMB. On another note, I actually live in Overland Park, which is on the southern side of the metro. This is a little bit on the expensive side, but has been great for my husband and I. The only problem with living out here for me was that several of my friends/classmates lived on the north side of the city. We often had to meet in the plaza, so that it wouldn't be a 45 min drive. I think that Century Towers may be a great place for single people, as you met many of your classmates and have more opportunities socially. Obviously the plaza is a fantastic place to live. It is close to school and a beautiful area of Kansas City. I hope this helps...
kelldoc 11-12-2005, 09:36 PM Obviously I am a fourth year so I have not went through the match yet but I can add where I will be interviewing for those who are curious. I am applying to Categorical Internal Medicine and I applied allopathic. I have interviews at University of Minnesota, University of Kansas, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Loyola University, Rush University, University of Illinois-Chicago, Michael Reese Hospital-Chicago, Tufts University, St. Elizabeth's-Boston, Georgetown University, Washington Hospital Center, Johns Hopkins-Sinai Hospital, and Albert Einstein-Philadelphia. I think that KCUMB has a great match rate from what I have heard in the past.
cooldreams 11-13-2005, 05:29 PM ct rent varies if you have a double room or not, and if you are living with an outside view or an inside view...
for not having to drive at all, this is the best place to live in my opinion.
kcumb is a good school. you will come out very knowledgable. its kinda crazy because many of your classmates will have done masters degrees or similar fields over many of the subjects you will cover, so you have to work more to keep up...

Thanks for the replies. I guess you would be talking about me. ;) I'm gonna have my masters in clinical research pretty soon.
Is KCUMB's match list available to ya'll?

ask them, i think they will give it out... i dont know it to be online however.
yet, i know it to have been given out at interview time, i think they also posted a list on campus somewhere around here...
ambernikel 11-13-2005, 10:37 PM I'm getting more and more pumped for KCUMB. My husband has begun talking to his company about transferring to independence and we're discussing now what to do with our home during the transition. I think we will sell just to be done with it. But I'm really wanting to come back to my home town for part of my clinicals. I want to do MS3 at a medium hosp where I'll get front and center attention and then move on to bigger cities when I'm MS4. Decisions, decisions. And a residency at Childrens Mercy or my hometown's ENT wouldn't be bad either. :)
nrddct 11-15-2005, 09:11 AM whats this about the medical terminology CD KCUMB is recommending us to buy? Worth it or waste of $50?
Also how are ya'll spending spending next spring and summer now that you know your gonna start med school?

Someone from the class of 2005 told me that about 95% of the class got their first choice and about 97% got their first or second choices. Don't know where this stat came from, maybe it was given to their class. I know that some of them matched into very prestigious programs including Harvard, Yale and Northwestern.

I am a first year at KCUMB, and I did end up buying the medical terminology book the spring semester before beginning this fall. I really did not have time to get through much of it, and most of the other students that I have spoken to either did not do many chapters in the book or they did not buy it at all. It is just one of those things that you can choose to buy or not. If you have the time and the energy to put time into it, it may really help you out. The only teacher that really stresses medical terminology is Dr. Friedlander which is the pathology instructor. In the first section that you'll take, Foundations of Medicine, he will quiz students before class. He says that everyone must be 'quized' by the end of the year, but I haven't had the luxury as of yet; therefore, I cannot speak from experience. I just know that it isn't graded or anything -- it seems to be pretty low-key. He just knows that by knowing medical terminology, a lot of the scientific names will be easier to understand and to learn. I hope this advice kind of helps. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Good luck! :)

I am in the 2008 class and I think that it is BS, but it is just me. If you work hard you will be fine. At the begining you may have to carry you medical dictionnary with you, buty if I was in your situation I would enjoy few good nigths out with that money. Also, I will forget about medical school and enjoy the remaining of the year.
JJcandy 11-22-2005, 10:36 PM I really like century towers, does the place fill up really easily? During my tour, they told me that there's already a waiting list. What are my chances of getting a room there next year? How early should I apply? is it already late? Anyone currently living in or lived in CT? Can I get some feedbacks? How's the price compared to the rest of the places around the school?
thanks for your help :)
DORocksMySocks 11-23-2005, 09:37 AM KCUMB Class of 2010 baby! I am withdrawing my application to WVCOM and UNECOM...interviewing at DMU in early January....I plan on putting down the deposit though. JJCandy...at your interview they said there was already a waiting list for CT? Does anyone have any other opinions on where to live? How is the commute from the Plaza? I might just apply to CT and see if others withdraw their applications....what do you all think?

Don't quote me on that, I think that's what I heard. Note that I had the tour right before my interview(after lunch), so I wasn't paying that much attention. nevetheless, I really like CT, I hope I can get in, it'll be really convenient since I don't think I'll get a car first year there.....
nrddct 11-23-2005, 11:39 AM Ohhh, I hope there's not a waiting list for CT. I wanted to live there.
JJcandy 11-23-2005, 03:20 PM Has anyone applied for CT yet? Anyone gotten any feedbacks? Is it just me or does the application process looks kinda complicated, what's with all this financial stuff we need to fill out?

I don't live in CT, but a lot of my friends are living there. I don't know anyone that had trouble getting a room in CT. The waitlist is probably just ineffect because they are not sure which students are moving out for next year -- the second years just got their rotation match sites a week or so ago. I live at Bennington Ridge, and they even had a waiting list around this time last year. I don't really think there is anything to worry about. I know people that got called off of the KCUMB waitlist in the summer, and they were still able to get a room in CT. Besides, I started getting calls from CT in April last year making sure that I remembered them and making sure that I did not want to live there. They really try to get as many students there as possible. As for the price of CT, my apartment is approximately the same price and has a lot more room and has a washer/dryer :), but the apartments in the Plaza tend to be kind of pricey -- look early and you can find some reasonably priced ones, however. The commute is approximatly 8 minutes or so to school from where I live [on a side note, The Woods of Walnut Creek also have nice apartments]. I like living away from campus just so that I have some separation between school and home. You can end up being on campus a lot of your time studying and being in class etc..., and I just think it is nice to go home and not be able to see the school from your room. I am not sure what type of feedback that you are looking for about CT, but I will try to help -- I do end up spending a lot of time at my friends' apartments that live in CT. I have friends that absolutely love CT and then I have friends that hate it there. It may help to do a Pro/Con list to see what is more important to you. It is a lot like living in a dorm -- tight quarters but a lot of your friends will most likely end up living there. It would be nice for forming study groups and for making a quick trip to the anatomy lab and such in the evening. Also, it would be nice to be able to roll out of bed and get to class in 5 minutes. However, if you like to go running, you may not feel comfortable with the neighborhood. I feel completely comfortable walking around campus at night and even walking across the street to CT, but I don't know if I would go running in the neighborhood (my friends usually drive to a park in the Plaza). Well, I hope this helps a little. I just trying to give you some general ideas to get you thinking about what you like and don't like in an apartment. If you have any questions, let me know. If I don't know the answer, I can always ask one of my friends. Good luck and Congratulations on your acceptance. KCUMB is truly a great school, and I am so happy that I came here. Have a Happy Thanksgiving ;)
JJcandy 11-23-2005, 11:26 PM Hi DrKT2009
thanks so much for your thoughtful reply, that was very helpful, got me thinking about a few things actually. Good thing to hear that there's no problem getting into CT though. :)
happy thanksgiving to you too

quick question, does anyone know what's the hardest courses in first and second year at KCUMB? I was told anatomy is hard. I haven't taken any anatomy classes in my undergrad, maybe I should prepare?
DORocksMySocks 11-25-2005, 04:22 PM At my interview...my guide said she would STRONGLY advise taking anatomy.....I have taken it (required for my program)....It actually comes as a shock to me that some undergrad programs don't require anatomy.....but yeah, I would advise it. It can only help, right!?!?
DrKT2009 11-25-2005, 06:16 PM Congrats to you too ambernikel !!

I don't know if anyone is going to be able to give you a good answer on what the hardest courses are due to the fact that people excel at different things. For me, anatomy and pathology are the most difficult and biochemistry and pharmacology are the easiest. As for courses you may want to take, I would say that histology would be a good choice because it is hard to understand pathology without a basic knowledge of what the normal tissue looks like - I just end up looking at the histology before I even start a pathology lecture which takes additional time. You can take anatomy if you would like (I didn't have it before coming to KCUMB); however, I think the hardest part of anatomy is locating/identifying the arteries/nerves on the cadaver. A lot of undergraduate anatomy courses seem to be just a watered-down version of anatomy which most likely won't help too much. I am not sure how much exposure you will have at locating/identifying structures on a cadaver in an undergraduate course. I would definitely look into what type of anatomy course your university offers. Of course, the majority of the students (at least in my class) seem to have tutors in both of these subjects (free for students) which greatly help in understanding the material. I hope this helps a little bit. Best of luck! :)
medicbs 11-27-2005, 03:30 PM Hello,
Finally, it has come time to make the great decision so I just sent the $1000 deposit to KCUMB which will be my home for the next few years!! Congrats to everyone else who has chosen wisely (at least, in my opinion).
Looking forward to meeting everyone and continuing my medical education in Kansas City!

Thank you so much for the tip to take histology! I'll definitely look into taking a course on it in my last semester of undergrad. As for anatomy, I guess I'll just have to do some reading on my own, my school is not offering it this semester :( .
once again, thanks for all the help

nrddct 11-27-2005, 07:04 PM jjcandy, I've taken anatomy in my postbacc program doing actual dissections. If youre really worried, then look up some anatomy books with real pictures of dissections. Netters is good for foundations, but real life differs b/c the bodies are different and the dissections vary depending on whose doing it. I found the "real life" anatomy books very helpful for practicals and saved me alot of time from the smelly labs. :)
I have a question on how much genetics is emphasized? I have to take it before starting. Since it doesn't matter if I take genetics at a community college or university, where should I take it?
Community college=easier, don't learn as much, cheaper
University= harder, learn more, $$$
Also does anyone have the match list?

I heard "Gray's Anatomy" is a good book to buy if I'm worried about anatomy, but it doesn't have real life pictures. What book with real life picture did you find really useful?
I have the match list!

Here it is, the match list, the format is not good because I just copied and pasted. Hope this helps everyone :)
nrddct 11-28-2005, 08:23 PM thanks for the match list jjcandy.
I dont think its that impressive though.
The book I recommend is:

sennp9 11-30-2005, 05:00 AM Anyone interviewing with me on 12/6?????? Wush meh luck!
TTTTorrance 11-30-2005, 10:59 AM Okay, I have some questions about the KCUMB third and fourth year rotations. Do most people end up going off site for their 3d and 4th years? Do you generally stay at the same site both years, or can you switch? Finally, how do they determine who goes where? Is it a blind lottery, or do people with higher grades get the more coveted rotations?
I'd also like to know about the quality of the rotations--what are the most sought after sites? I am from New Jersey and saw there is a Newark rotation at St.Michael's and also in Stratford. Are those good rotations/hard to get in? Do people there spend much time in New York? How hard are the Florida and Kansas City rotations to get?
Thanks so much!
ambernikel 12-02-2005, 01:38 PM Thank you so much for the tip to take histology! I'll definitely look into taking a course on it in my last semester of undergrad. As for anatomy, I guess I'll just have to do some reading on my own, my school is not offering it this semester :( .
once again, thanks for all the help
I took histology because our anatomy teacher told us that the most common response to "what class do you wish you had taken?" from our graduates that went to med school is Histology. Anatomy is required at my (undergrad) school but they recommend we take comparative because it is very heavy in dissection compared to our Human anatomy class which I'm not sure does anything except maybe the cat. We're a small school without cadavers. In comparative we learned anatomy and dissection skills.

Based off what they told us at the interview I can answer part of that.
The match for clinicals is done where everyone picks their top 3 choices and they run a lottery and pick the one that causes the most people to get their top two picks. I think they do it at the beginning of their second year. I'm pretty sure you stay at the site the first year (of clinicals) and then leave during the next for electives. I don't know anything about the quality because I don't have a list of possibile clinical sites. If someone does have one can I have it?
Aphelion 12-02-2005, 07:27 PM I wouldn't sweat the medical terminology book.
If you have not had Human Anatomy. Take it. Relearning the material is a lot easier than learning it fresh in 6 weeks along with everything else involved in the musculoskeletal section. If you can't take an anatomy class then get a Netter's and a Visual Atlas and study the muscles/nerves/veins. There are websites which help you out with this too. Good tips which will make a large part of your second section a lot easier. Really wish I had known this before starting.
Histology would make some things easier, but not really a big deal. You get a lot of good exposure at the school.
Pathology at KCUMB is TOP NOTCH. Probably the biggest reason graduates from this school compete so well. Dr. Friedlander is the chair of the deptartment and he maintains the web site. www.pathguy.com . He provides a lot of his notes to the public there along with the histology slides he expects. Might be worth your while to scan that website to get an idea of what to expect from "ERF".
Microbiology is a large part of the curriculum the first year. I would have an idea about the major bugs and how to tell them apart. (Gram +/-, coagulase +/-, etc)
Hope these help.
raidermedic 12-02-2005, 10:07 PM Try to learn some anatomy before you get here. Either take a gross class or get yourself a Netter's with CD and anatomy BRS and try to learn some muscles. You will not learn a sufficient amount to actually be set for class but at least you will be familiar with it.
Some say that medicinal chem is good prep for pharm. But to be honest most pharm seems to be knowing when not to give a certain drug or what not to give it with.
Physiology, first year you will have Dr. Karius who is top notch. But I would still recommend getting as much physio experience as you can. A lot of bright people struggle with this subject because you really have to be able to conceptualize the informaiton rather than just memorizing it. If you can master physio you will make path, pharm, and some clinical lectures much easier.
apass 12-03-2005, 11:47 AM I am a third year and did not have anatomy nor histo. I was a nontraditional student and did well. Yes I had to bust my butt but so did others who already had anatomy. If you don't have the time to fit anatomy in the schedule that don't freak out about it. Yes it will be overwhelming but I think it is for most of the class - Musculoskeletal section hits you like a mac truck but everyone lives through it. I promise if you work hard and really put everything you have into it you will come out doing well.
medical terminology book - screw that
in the first few months of school you can join some clubs and get a stedmen's dictionary for free. It comes with a CD rom dictionary which is great - it pronounces the words for you and gives you the meaning of all the roots of the words.
just my two cents
Sweetlill1 12-05-2005, 10:15 AM My fiance and I are both putting deposits down for KCUMB... so as of now this is where we will be. Not sure where we will live, I am already in KC so looking will not be too hard. We will look around the plaza and in Johnson county (kansas) around where I am now. Looking forward to school starting in the fall!

I am the fiance she speaks of. Planning to send the money in this week. It is quite a chunk of money to be sending but it is just an early tuition payment. I am excited to meet everyone!
JJcandy 12-07-2005, 05:02 PM Thanks everyone for the awsome advices. Looks like I will need to do some reading and learning before August.....
on a lighter note, I do want to go somewhere fun this summer, what's everyone doing for the summer? :)
JJcandy 12-08-2005, 10:07 PM I looked up the kansas city crime rates, I'm really suprised that it even exceeded cities like detriot and chicago......I never would have guessed that the city was THAT bad when I was there for the interview...any thoughts? How bad is it really over there?....call me useless...it's my first time leaving home...kinda concerned...
kumark13 12-08-2005, 11:37 PM Dont worry about the city. Just make sure you are living in a decent area. Just like any major city there is crime. You will hear about murders and shootings every night on the news but it is always in bad neighborhoods. you are not going to have problems living in the city. overall it is a very nice city. I know it does not have crime rates exceeding detroit and chicago. there is no way. dont get yourself worried. we are going to be at a great school and we will all be happy there.
JJcandy 12-08-2005, 11:55 PM I couldn't believe my eyes either when I saw the numbers..check this out..
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0004902.html
detriot has total crime index of 8,839.5, kansas city MO has a total crime index of 10,039.5..am i just reading it wrong?
I like the school so much, it's so perfect for me, this crime rate thing is kinda disturbing though

The crime thing really worried me a lot at first also. I have moved a lot but have always lived in medium size cities. However, I really think that the exposure we'll get from the bigger city will be worth having to adjust to a very different culture. When I interviewed I was getting a bagle from some shop that morning. The girl goes "what do you want" but didn't ever once look at me and I just stood there like an idiot because I didn't realize that she was talking to me. Finally I got a slight glance in my direction and it occured to me that she was speaking to me. It's just weird for me that people don't make eye contact. So I definitely have a lot of adjusting! It's a bit scary but I've got to learn how to function in a big city at some point in my life. The biggest thing I'm worried about it driving to and from the school especially after dark. Since I've always been told not to ever drive down prospect or troost after dark. Well that's kind of right where the school is. Anyway, I'm sure a lot of it gets exaggerated too.
zippyjent 12-09-2005, 05:19 PM Hello,
I put down my deposit, and I am in love with KCUMB! Is anyone interested/know about the D.O./M.B.A program?
zippyjent
Aphelion 12-10-2005, 07:42 AM The crime rate came as a big shock to me too.
I came from Portland, OR which is about the same size as KC and has 1/2 the police force.
Nowhere near the number of violent crimes in Portland though. I have my ideas about why, but I will keep them to myself. I think this year in KC is unusually bad with the record number of homocides.
The area around the school is not the best, but the administration maintains great security and we are working on some small upgrades to improve campus security as well.
My observation is that the area around the school is on the upswing. The school is starting some huge capital improvements in the area. Century towers is the home of some city services (fire, police, Homeland security).
North seems to be a pretty good place to live, near country club plaza is probably ok.
Within sight of the school a new condo has gone up. Not a bad idea to buy a condo or house since home prices are pretty low.
There is a place north of the river called North Brighton something or another. Looks like a good deal. Many student live there, especially the ones with families.
K
JJcandy 12-10-2005, 02:06 PM I want to live in CT, is that safe? or it is going to be like don't go outside after dark...is there a grocery store close-by?
Do you guys think I will need a car for safety reasons?
ambernikel 12-13-2005, 05:44 PM Hello,
I put down my deposit, and I am in love with KCUMB! Is anyone interested/know about the D.O./M.B.A program?
zippyjent
I am interested in it. I discussed it with one of our PRN docs who has his own practice and he thinks its a great idea. The only concern I have is that I'm not sure I want to stay in KC for my rotations and it requires you to stay there. I'm also not sure if I'm going to have a private practice or not. I think if you are pretty sure you will have a private practice or you are wanting to go into hospital administration it is a great idea. I'm not exactly sure what the application process for it is. I briefly looked over it awhile back but right now I'm just focusing on getting done with my undergrad and getting moved to KC. But I've taken business accounting and economics classes as undergrad just to get some preparation for owning a practice. So this degree immediately sparked my interest.
Sweetlill1 12-17-2005, 12:28 AM lets keep talking guys. we cant let our class fall to the bottom of the page.
JJcandy 12-18-2005, 01:48 PM lets keep talking guys. we cant let our class fall to the bottom of the page.
I agree..
Is it just me, or there's not too many of us on SDN? I don't see many KCUMB discussions on any of the threads....wierd...what's with all the enthusiasm with DMU? KCUBM is WAY better (lol..okayokay, kidding, any DMUers please don't start yelling at me or something) :p ;)
nrddct 12-22-2005, 10:05 AM yeah, strange isn't it. Anyone have exciting plans the summer before we start?
JJcandy 12-22-2005, 11:43 AM bet you anything it's because the DMUers get laptops, that's why they are online so much more
I've got a problem, I think I just screwed up really bad on my 50% zoology final because of all the classes missed for interviews. Worst case scenerio, i might get a C- in that course, it's not a pre-req, but a high level course in parasitology. Are they going to take back my acceptance??  :( . I had three finals in 2 days, I did well in the other two, but this one completely slaughtered me......
nrddct 12-22-2005, 12:20 PM I'm kinda in the same situation jjcandy. I did worse on my last MCAT this time but found out after my acceptance at KCUMB. Everyone I asked said not to worry about it and that there's little chance my invitation will be revoked. I released my scores so KCUMB will find out anyways, but I'm still paranoid. :scared: JJcandy, I think adcoms will understand if your GPA is competitive. One class won't do you in. I bet if you send in the other grand in right now you could drop out of school, rob a bank, do time in jail and still have your seat next fall. ;)
JJcandy 12-23-2005, 03:20 PM hey nrddct, you seriously don't need to worry about that second MCAT score. It's not like they sent you an conditional acceptance asking you to take the MCAT again. They are already satisfied with what you have and they don't need to see anymore MCAT scores (good or bad). Don't worry about that AT ALL (even though knowing us premed and med students, few of us actually understand the meaning of relaxing..lol).
Anyway, just found out my marks today. Apparently, I didn't do as bad as I thought on that final (or maybe my prof curved), but phew......can finally relax and enjoy the holidays now!
merry christmas everyone
ambernikel 12-23-2005, 11:03 PM So I guess I am likely CT bound afterall. JJCandy are you still too? Who else is planning on staying at CT?
I think you can probably find better deals in KC but I like the thought of staying in a building with other students and having other people to walk to and from class with. I also like the whole "walking" to class idea. I've never been much for commuting.
Raven Feather 12-24-2005, 02:02 PM Hey guys and gals! I accepted my seat at KCUMB! I have a family so living in a decent area is a must! Is North Brighton (sp) on the KS side or MO side?
I grew up in a high crime neighborhood, but as long as you don't walk down the street by yourself at night and as long as when you hear gun fire and lay flat on your stomach--you outta be alright! (<-----somewhat kidding!) :D
nrddct 12-24-2005, 08:22 PM All that worrying for nothing jjcandy. :) I guess what you said makes sense about my mcat, thanks.
I'm interested in staying at CT. The convenience factor is a big plus although I was put off a little b/c they don't have garaged parking. I wonder how early we should contact CT about reserving a spot?
JJcandy 12-26-2005, 06:21 PM Hope everyone had an awsome Christmas. I personally had too much food and too little sleep...lol...absolutely amazing
I already sent in my request for a room in CT, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to be CT next year. I too love the whole walking to school idea :). Hope we'll be neighbors Ambernickle!
Nrddct, I'm also concerned about parking in a open lot....btw, anyone know how bad is the vandalism? Another question, do I need a car if I'm just living across the street from the school? How's the transportation in kansas city? Is everyone getting a car?
Sweetlill1 12-26-2005, 09:06 PM A car is pretty important for grocery shopping, or basically doing anything... the area that the school is in is not too open to walking around for these types of thing... I would bet that almost everyone has a car... I am not sure where I will be living yet... definitely not CT though... my fiance and I are looking into purchasing a condo or townhouse... I hope everyone has a great winter break... and to answer the what you are doing next summer question... I will be planning my wedding (and finishing/defending my masters practicum)...
paramenace 12-27-2005, 01:54 AM Congrats class of 2010. You're going to attend a very good medical school. You'll also be surrounded by some very good people within your class and within the school.
Yes, the school has many problems, quirks, issues, and b.s. Yes, medschool is not easy. Yes, it's in the middle of the ghetto. Yes, KC crime rates are very high. But, the school has many more positives than negatives, and overall, it is still a very good investment in your own future. And you'll make it through. ERF is awesome, so is Dr. Karius, Dr. Johnston, and many others.
Safety-wise, common sense practices are in order around the campus area, but campus itself is very safe. The most serious problems we are having with safety are 2 or 3 breakins into cars in the outlying parking lots a year. Security is always on campus, and the donut shop and hose-monkey hangout (err...KCMO police & fire depts) are kitty corner. CT is safe and convenient.
Take these last few months to really enjoy whatever you enjoy doing. Good luck.
If you have any questions, feel free to pm or AIM me
nrddct 12-27-2005, 03:16 PM Sweetlill1, I'm finishing up my masters as well although at this point its the last thing I want to do. I'm working on my paper this break which really sucks and its a beautiful sunny 80 degrees today. +pity+ I really feel like quiting my program since I only signed up for it to boost my application. Now, it wouldn't matter eitherway.
What do have to do to reserve a spot at CT?

Hey nrddct-
What part of Texas are you in? I am in San Antonio, and we are having great weather right now. Also, what masters are you doing? I am in the MPH program at UTHSC-SA. Just wondering.
nrddct 12-27-2005, 03:31 PM FW right now. I'm doing a masters in clinical research management over at TCOM. Hows your MPH going? Did you interview at TCOM this cycle?
nrddct 12-28-2005, 12:17 PM Is everyone getting laptops? The student ambassadors said we didn't really need them b/c there are plenty around campus. Also there's no wireless connection. I wonder if CT has wireless capabilities?

CT's wireless is in the study area and lounge, neither are strong enough to reach your room though. If you like to study in the those areas a laptop is a good idea because you'll be downloading a lot of stuff off of blackboard throughout the year. Not to mention using online resources.
If you're like me and just study in your room then you can just use a desktop.
If you study on campus (in smith or the library) then theres computers all over the place so you would not need a laptop.

I already have a new laptop that we got over the summer thinking I would have to have one anyway for school next fall. I really hope they get the wireless internet going at the campus quickly.

I really hope they build a parking garage before I go. :)
Jason Lee 12-28-2005, 11:03 PM Hey all,
KCUMB first year here wanting to give congrats to all of you incoming, and with my own 2 cents from the last 6 months.
Security: Living in CT is probably safer than most suburbs. There's a passkeyed security fence, passkeyed security doors at the only entrance, and private security. Homeland Security, the KC Police and Fire Depts have offices in the building.
KCUMB isn't in a very good neighborhood, but most medical schools are in the same boat. The only time I'd be worried would be walking around in the dead of night, and when students actually are on campus at night (study hall before exams, late-night anatomy lab sessions, etc.) they drive or catch a ride.
Books: IMO the Medical Terminology book isn't worth the money - you can google or look up in Stedman's any term you're unfamiliar with, and I would guess most incoming med students have enough of an outside interest in medicine that they've already got the basics down. The 1st 6 weeks (Foundations of Medicine) is 95% a crash course in undergrad sciences anyway (no medical terminology needed).
Gray's Anatomy, IMO, wouldn't be worth it (whoever asked about it). Better to get Moore-Dalley's Anatomy if you really want to read ahead (which is taught from, and a lot of the anatomy exam questions come from the blue-boxed highlights).
Previous Classwork: I was lucky - I studied Micro in undergrad, and had some really good professors - a lot of fellow first years with no previous Micro experience were cursing about the Bug Parade that had been pounded into me already.
Having Biochem and Genetics in undergrad helped, too. I had undergrad Vertebrate Anatomy with dissection, but even though I did well in that class, Anatomy turned out to be the toughest subject for me so far.
High Points Of KCUMB: #1 on my list, and this is what really sold me on coming to KCUMB, is the cooperation and helpfulness of the students and the faculty. Just to brag on the class of 2009 for a lil' bit, it really is amazing how helpful and nice my classmates are. Multiple students post up study guides and important points of every lecture, students post mock quiz questions and write up charts and diagrams. There aren't any nasty type of gunners in my class (the ones who would do anything to get a better class standing). Most of the teaching faculty is the same way - everyone is out to help the medical student succeed, which can really help you out if you're stuck needing help.
I really like the Genesis curriculum, which is the case study, section-based class material organization, as opposed to the traditional subject by subject organization. For me personally it helps with learning and retention.
The facilities and resources are great at KCUMB and at CT. Study halls at CT and at Smith Hall are well-furnished and nice and quiet, and they help me cut out the distractions. There's an incredible amount of study material available on the internet - I haven't taken looseleaf or notebook lecture notes since the first section, all I have to do most of the time is annotate the study material during lecture. Great workout facilities are at both KCUMB and CT, if that's your thing.
Living at CT, I've saved hundreds of dollars every month not having to drive, except to make supply runs or to go out and celebrate after exams. It's more expensive up front to live at CT then elsewhere, but to me, the difference is made up in gas and the almost-all-bills-paid-for at CT. Heck, I'd pay the difference just so I don't have to get up and drive any earlier than I have to for those 7:00 am exams.
Gripes At KCUMB: The guest lecturers have sometimes been hit and miss. Some of them are wonderful, with lots of anecdotes and helpful hints, but some aren't so great.
Living 15 minutes away from decent shopping (Wal-Mart, Target, malls, etc) can be a drag sometimes, especially with winter weather.
There's also a very small but vocal minority in my class which seems to be really spoiled. They complain about everything from the classroom temperature to extra learning material and quiz grades not getting posted fast enough online. I don't know how to break this to them, but at one point medical students actually had to go to lectures and take down their own notes.
cooldreams 01-01-2006, 09:05 PM yea it is a great place, and my first choice. you should be aware that it is
not a perfect world though, and my whole point in posting this is only to
point out that it is not perfect, but otherwise a very fine instituion.
problem 1: tests are not graded quickly. currently you could find most other
medical schools that are computerized testing which gives an immediate grade(just like the usmle and comlex)... but as it is not, its hand graded and hand entered into a system for you to see several days later. this year was the first year for even putting it onto the internet, whereas previously, it was all printed and posted.
problem 2: no wireless access and the last noted response to the class is
that there will be no wireless access this year. they said they have plans
to consider wireless internet access but no solid plans to implement at this
time.
problem 3: the teaching staff is great, however this institution is not run
by the teaching staff, and as such, there were a number of teachers who
recently left, resulting in a number of visiting teachers getting called in.
thus far the students have received no notification about any of this.
problem 4: the disection lab is pretty nice, except that it is small, and
that your class is broken up into 2 shifts to do disection. each shift will
share in the disecting, so you get to take part in half of the lab, once a
week.
problem 5: CT security is not that good. my boyfriend got up to my apartment room without ever using a security key. the security guard just let him in his car in the parking gate, and someone else let him in the front door. not that i was unhappy about him being there, the fact remains, secuirty is not tight.
problem 6: yes there are people who complain about small things a lot,
however they must do it in a "professional" manner or they will have it on
their permanent record about some vague incident of unprofessionalism that
cannot be taken off.
problem 7: you cannot protest test questions. we have been notified that
even if a professor says a question was graded improperly, that the tests
will not change if it has been more than a few days. that is a problem
because we never get tests back until at least 3-4 days later. we took our finals december 17, and have yet to hear anything about them. we have been told maybe friday of next week, or the week after because they do not have enough time to enter the grades in.
problem 8: there are a number of small but annoying problems throughout the
system. one that bascially you should get set up with a tutor as early as
you can. you do not have to, but everyone will be trying to as much as they
can to get ahead, and the tutors know little tricks about what you will be
tested over, thus making you more efficient. if you dont do this, then you
could easily fall behind. another is that a number of the study areas are
nice, but you can sign up for them in advance thus preventing anyone else
from using them. these are not big issues, but are annoying. also unless you
are very early in the alphabet, plan on staying on campus until 5pm everyday
because you will have 4 hr lectures in the morning, skip 1-3 hrs, and
probably have a lab from 4-5pm. this will be consistent throughout the year,
simply because of your name.
problem 9: though i am told this is a first this year, there are mostly us girls here, so the boys have it pretty good.
make sure you talk to as many ppl as you can to learn the tricks to how
things work to help you get your gpa as high as possible.
it is a good school, its tough, but it is not perfect so dont let anyone
tell you that it is.
;)
nrddct 01-01-2006, 10:33 PM thanks for the input jason lee, and cooldreams, I'd like to hear more. That professionalism stuff sounds kinda wacky. Also if there are plans to computerize the testing system in the future? Hopefully soon?
Are lectures recorded for the students?
Cooldreams, I was wondering about the anatomy class as well. Seems like the students really get short changed since theyre only able to do half the dissections. Did this affect your scores when it came time to take the practicals? I would be pissed if the other group performed a crappy dissection.

in dissection it did not matter how good or bad we had done actually  ... you just have to be able to pass the practical at the end of the section. that means coming down there often to see what the other groups did, and then to review a lot.
lectures for the most part are not recorded, and you are not allowed to ask to record them. i think ive seen ppl record them them though without asking, but i dont know for sure. i do know that notepool records the lectures but its a pain to use because it is just on the cassette tape and not digital.
sometimes they record lectures from professors who are visiting, but i dont know much more about that, like if it is even available to the students or not. i would guess they are.
nrddct 01-02-2006, 09:29 AM so there really is no scribe service for lectures?
cooldreams 01-02-2006, 10:39 AM so there really is no scribe service for lectures?
there is notepool, but its really not too popular with the class since so many people post their own notes anyways. it just depends on your class. plus ive heard that many of the teachers do not like notepool, so there is a little bit of a stigma against it in the administration.
nrddct 01-02-2006, 03:18 PM well, I'll certainly take these issues into consideration. TCOM doesn't have any of these issues and is about $25k cheaper per year. I just have to be sure and match on Feb 1.
nrddct 01-02-2006, 03:18 PM repost.
cooldreams 01-02-2006, 04:11 PM if those issues are not that big a deal to you, then also look at residency placement and comlex/usmle pass rates between the schools. actually this is the information you should make your decision off of. unfortunately i have no idea what tcom looks like.
your number 3 choice maker would be tuition. it is these 3 issues that will stay with you the longest. the other things are just to make your life more or less relaxing while at med school- and that is only 2 yrs of ur life.
JJcandy 01-04-2006, 05:47 PM Thank you so much Cooldreams and Jason Lee for the valuable posts.
just some follow up questions
1. guest instructors, how often do you guys get them? Will there
2. How strict is the code of professionalism, how will it effect you overall grade, can wearing jeans to class once get you big ugly marks for code of professionalism, will it effect your chances at certain residencies? (be it good or bad)
3. More girls than guys, really? KCUMB is probably the first med school with more girls than guys. Are we talking about more than 60 percent girls?
4. What's with the teachers leaving? Is this a growing trend? Do the school not treat the professors very well? How many actual practicing physicians do KCUMB have in the teaching faculty? Were those replacement teachers very bad?
5. At my interview we got to check out the first year and second year lectures. There was a lady recording the lecture at the back of the lecture. Is that only for the school? Students are not allowed access to those tapes?
thank you for your help
Hope you all had a wonderful holiday
cooldreams 01-04-2006, 08:49 PM follow up questions
1. guest instructors, how often do you guys get them?
depends, they seem to be basically filling in for the other teachers and we have MANY per section so its not a huge deal. and these teachers are pretty good.
2. How strict is the code of professionalism, how will it effect you overall grade, can wearing jeans to class once get you big ugly marks for code of professionalism, will it effect your chances at certain residencies? (be it good or bad)
i dont honestly know. i do know that once it gets on your record it basically stays there, and yes it will affect your residency placement. there are ways to get positive marks. this professionalism thing is not something scare you off though. kcumb is kind of ahead of other schools in this aspect since i believe that it will be mandatory in a few years for all schools.
3. More girls than guys, really? KCUMB is probably the first med school with more girls than guys. Are we talking about more than 60 percent girls?
more like 51% to 49%.... but still... with other schools 60+% guys.....
4. What's with the teachers leaving? Is this a growing trend? Do the school not treat the professors very well? How many actual practicing physicians do KCUMB have in the teaching faculty? Were those replacement teachers very bad?
no idea. the teachers that left were supposed to be pretty good. but the teachers we have now are very good too.
5. At my interview we got to check out the first year and second year lectures. There was a lady recording the lecture at the back of the lecture. Is that only for the school? Students are not allowed access to those tapes?
if those tapes are notepool tapes, then you have to be a member of notepool to use them probably. beyond that i dont know.
Raven Feather 01-05-2006, 06:56 AM Is my memory not serving me right? At my interview, the tour guide told us when we were in the lecture hall, that notes are already printed (packets) and are placed on the table for you to pick up before class.
cooldreams 01-05-2006, 02:47 PM Is my memory not serving me right? At my interview, the tour guide told us when we were in the lecture hall, that notes are already printed (packets) and are placed on the table for you to pick up before class.
no, that is correct. just that the notes printed are not always what they are lectureing in class. they have notes they give out, and then they typically lecture on a power point presentation.
then after the lectures, many of the classmates post their notes taken in class. you are tested over both the handed out stuff, the lecture, and reading assignments.
nrddct 01-05-2006, 09:13 PM are the powerpoints available for download before class?
Also is there a test bank of some sort? I'm concerned that there are soo many different lecturers b/c everyone has a different teaching style and it will be hard to anctipate what will be on an exam. I often study everything only to find that I concentrated on the wrong details.

often they are up, it depends on the teacher. many times they are updating it right up and to the lecture...
test bank, no not really. there is a pathology quizing bank, but that is the only one, though it seems to hit on most other stuff too. the questions are supposed to be based on learning objectives. study the objectives and you are in theory studying what you will be tested over. they try to make that pretty consistent.
Gyark 01-06-2006, 12:39 PM Hi All,
My interview at KCUMB is on 2/7. I think my chances are fairly good. It is my first pick.
BTW - I have lived in the KC area for 13 years so if any of you have general questions about the area, let me know. Also, I have a family and am 41 so I can relate with some of you older students who are bringing a spouse and kids. Let me know if you have questions.

Awesome! I have a family I will be bringing. I will pm you later (gotta go to work). I hope you get in! You can also pm me for any interview tips. I had my interview on 11/10.
DORocksMySocks 01-06-2006, 03:57 PM This might be a strange question, but does CT offer any way to search for a roommate? I know CCOM offers a website for students to post if they are looking for roommates on or around campus. Part of me would rather pay for half of a two bedroom apartment at CT than all of a one bedroom apartment. (You are all probably thinking that is a strange question but 1/2 of an aparment is less debt...) Anyone know of a way to do this kind of search??? Thanks

i think they do something, and so does the school.
oh, around may? or june maybe? one of the summer months, the IT dept at the school starts to set up the new users to post on blackboard... get on that asap, you meet your future classmates better and could actually talk about the CT situation better. there are a few of you on here right now, but when you are on blackboard you are exposed to a few hundred of your classmates at once.
JJcandy 01-06-2006, 05:00 PM Thanks Cooldream for all the info :)
nrddct 01-12-2006, 07:32 PM yay KCUMB 2010, we're #1!!! :D
NuvoCK52 01-12-2006, 07:36 PM I'm trying to figure out the best place for me and my family (no kids just animals) to live. I posted a question about this in the Osteopathic forum for current KCUMB students. I've heard that if you go around the plaza it's cheap but it's not a great neighborhood. Most of my info is from the docs I work with but all of them went there >10 years ago so a lot has changed since.
The Admissions Dept at KCUMB has alot of info and there was an appartment search agent recommended to me who helped students for free. Anyway I live around the plaza and it's great.
DORocksMySocks 01-12-2006, 09:17 PM Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it.
nrddct 01-18-2006, 11:28 AM does kcumb specify a laptop? I'm too lazy to check. :)
ambernikel 01-18-2006, 09:44 PM does kcumb specify a laptop? I'm too lazy to check. :)
In the college catalog under financial aid it said that KCUMB requires a laptop or desktop but I think it referred to the IT department to get specifics on what the requirements are. I don't know exactly at this moment but its somewhere in here http://www.kcumb.edu/kadmissions/collegecatalog0405.pdf.
raidermedic 01-19-2006, 06:32 AM If you have a computer that runs internet explorer (or better yet firefox!) then you pretty much meet the specifications.
Raven Feather 01-19-2006, 09:47 AM So, has anyone heard back from the credit check thingy? I did receive the stuff about immunizations and such. I feel like there is something I'm not doing.
nrddct 01-19-2006, 01:27 PM ya, on the credit check, if you don't hear anything then thats good news. You shouldn't have a problem getting loans then, thats what the FA office told me when I called to ask.
nrddct 01-19-2006, 08:41 PM I'd like to see some pics of you guys so that we can put faces to names, or do ya'll think that would ruin the anonymity of SDN?

I dunno, I don't want my pic plastered on SDN...but I don't mine like emailing it or something.
Did anyone else get that cool calendar KCUMB sent?
Raven Feather 01-20-2006, 11:44 AM So okay, about the credit report...I have a FICO score of 693 and they still would like me to have a co-signer? I was told that a FICO score of 600 or above is good enough to get funding? :scared:

How did you find out what your exact score was. I couldnt find that on the actual report that kcumb sent to me and I really want to know?
JJcandy 01-20-2006, 04:31 PM I only got the immunization stuff, how come I didn't get a cool calender or anything about the credit check? When did you all receive all of these things?
Raven Feather 01-20-2006, 09:04 PM How did you find out what your exact score was. I couldnt find that on the actual report that kcumb sent to me and I really want to know?
It is not on that credit report, I bought my credit report + score on-line through equifax at www.econsumer.equifax.com for 14.95.
Raven Feather 01-20-2006, 09:08 PM I only got the immunization stuff, how come I didn't get a cool calender or anything about the credit check? When did you all receive all of these things?
I received my immun. stuff about a month ago, I just received my credit report and calendar yesterday. I was all hyped until I called and was told they would like me to have a co-signer. My family members are poor and have no or poor credit. My sister is the only one who is a potential and that is a lot to ask of someone. Im gonna call again on Monday because I think I will get funded, maybe they just need a "just in case". We'll see what happens. :(
cooldreams 01-21-2006, 06:54 AM i actually thought that its not just the credit score really, but anything on your record that may have brought up a flag to them. you should talk to them
Raven Feather 01-21-2006, 10:49 AM i actually thought that its not just the credit score really, but anything on your record that may have brought up a flag to them. you should talk to them
Yeah, I see your point there, but the FICO score is supposed to convert to your risk category of not paying loans back, I fall into about a 10% risk, since my score is almost 700.
I am definately gonna talk to them on Monday. Besides, if in fact I do need one absolutely, I need to know if it is just for first year....I am assuming it is being that one's credit could change within a year (hopefully for the better).

if you get any private loans for school that may be what they are talking about, also, if you do get any private loans, those private loans will make your credit score go down. i dont think the federal loans do though...
Raven Feather 01-21-2006, 03:48 PM Yeah, I'm fine for federal loans, just need a co-signer for the private ones for living expenses. Do you know if someone co-signing for you effect's his or her credit--or does it not who up unless I don't pay and he or she has to?
cooldreams 01-21-2006, 05:43 PM it will adversely affect their credit to be a cosigner. try to get some sort of scholarships or service program with your state or local town. they are not that rare....
Raven Feather 01-23-2006, 06:45 AM it will adversely affect their credit to be a cosigner. try to get some sort of scholarships or service program with your state or local town. they are not that rare....
Yeah, Im applying for scholarships, but that is not guaranteed at this point.
So how's the medical foundations section, our first class?
ambernikel 01-23-2006, 11:11 AM Wow, my fico score isn't really very great at all and I received a letter saying that I have excellent credit. I was like, really? Hmm, that's cool. I mean, we do pay our bills on time and have equity in our home so I think that's what made the credit good even though we have a lot of debt. But most of our debt will be paid off before the end of my first year of school. Then all we'll have is our mortgage and my car and my undergrad loans but I'm deferring those.
I was so relieved because we have no family that could co-sign. I really wish there was more help for lower income medical students. I think its crazy that such a high percentage of med students come from families in the top 1% of incomes. Just bc your family is rich doesn't mean you'll be a good doc. Drives me nutty.
Oh well!
ambernikel 01-23-2006, 11:13 AM Yeah, Im applying for scholarships, but that is not guaranteed at this point.
So how's the medical foundations section, our first class?
What scholarships are you applying for? How do you find out about them?
Raven Feather 01-23-2006, 12:15 PM Wow, my fico score isn't really very great at all and I received a letter saying that I have excellent credit.

We have 50+ equity in our current home (although it is in my hubby's name), they don't see that on the report. I was also told that my hubby couldn't be a co-signer. Both our cars are paid off etc., etc. I'm like in 12k in debt, I didn't think that was a biggy especially with my FICO score. Anyway, I come from a disadvantaged background but my soioeconomic rank is greatly improved now---but the other people I could ask in my family are still in poverty.
What's a girl to do? :)
Raven Feather 01-23-2006, 12:19 PM What scholarships are you applying for? How do you find out about them?
I'm applying for one so far that is from my place of employment (hospital). The scholarship is for people in the hospital service area. The hospital foundation gives 10k for each of the 1st two years of med school for an allo or osteo student if chosen to receive the scholarship. Hey, that would help out greatly for the living expenses!

Wow thats a great option. I don't know if my hospital offers anything like that. I know they do for PA's and nursing but I'm not sure about medical students. I'll have to talk to the Physician recruiters.

I don't want to talk too soon, but the odds are in my favor b/c not many people in the area go to school to become docs and also it is an urban primary care underserved area. We'll see though.
Definately check with the hospital. My hospital also has scholarships for nursing, x-ray tech, respiratory therapy etc. They just might have one for docs!
ihateresearch 01-23-2006, 02:09 PM I'm sending in my deposit this week.

Welcome to KCUMB class of 2010!!! I hate research too! :D
sg333 01-25-2006, 08:00 AM Hello, I'm an OMSIV at KCUMB and am graduating in May 2006. We, me and my wife, have a townhome that we need to get rid off and was wondering if anyone was interested. The location is Riverside which is 5-10 min north of the school depending on traffic. The rent is amazing if you don't make too much money, and there are about 15-20 medical/dental students that live in the same complex so you don't have to worry about crime. If you are interested please email me at: sgillroy@kcumb.edu
Thank You,
Steven Gillroy OMSIV
nrddct 01-25-2006, 10:06 AM does it have a garage? more details please.

ambernikel 01-29-2006, 08:29 PM Did you guys get your scholarships packet?
Raven Feather 01-29-2006, 09:03 PM Did you guys get your scholarships packet?
No, is that the packet that includes the private loans stuff and all or does it give you the scholarships you may (or may not be) eligible for?
kumark13 01-29-2006, 10:09 PM I didnt get any packet with any of this stuff. when did this come?
ambernikel 01-30-2006, 09:28 AM I didnt get any packet with any of this stuff. when did this come?
I received on Saturday a packet that had the scholarship information that one may or may not be (as most of them were in my case) eligible for. I have not yet received the application for financial aid. But I assume that will come after the deadline for W-2's since you have to have your tax return complete before application.
Edit: I also live relatively close to KC so yours may still be in the mail or something.
Sweetlill1 01-31-2006, 04:08 PM I live in KC (well Mission, KS) and have not received this packet yet... have you already turned in your FAFSA amber? Just wondering why I haven't gotten it yet... should I call the school?

I live like 3 hours of south of KC so that must not be it. Maybe its based on when you were accepted or something... I have no idea. But I'm sure if you call the scholarship coordinator, Mary Sommerhauser I think (or something like that) she can get them to you.
nrddct 02-01-2006, 09:50 PM I just mailed in my reservation for century towers today. I wonder how they determine which floor we will stay on? I wanna be on the floor with the cool people.

Of course you're gonna be on the cool people floor! ;)
I'm trying to save for that other 1k deposit coming up in March. :scared:
Anybody else not going to get much "time off" before starting med school b/c of debt? I know I can't be the only broke one!
Amber,
Is that your dog then on your avatar? She looks like my dog, same coat and eye color. Her name is Talullah. Im still waiting on the scholarship packet. Im also apply for that NHSC (sp) scholarhip for primary care in addition to that one I told you about from work. Guess I will see what happens.
geraldm 02-01-2006, 11:03 PM I just got into KCUMB.
ihateresearch 02-02-2006, 10:27 AM Congrats geraldm!!!!
Yeah I'm definetely broke after sending in my first deposit. I don't know how I'm gonna make the next one in a month and a half. I work full time and I didn't realize that I wouldn't have any money this year. Crazy.
nrddct 02-02-2006, 02:09 PM I think I'm gonna send in my second deposit soon since it student loan money anyways. Do we just send a check by itself or include a letter?
Congrats Gerldam
ihateresearch 02-02-2006, 03:21 PM I just sent a check and everything was fine so I think that's sufficient.
geraldm 02-02-2006, 07:19 PM According to my letter I have until March 2nd to send the first 1000 in to reserve the seat. However, a few students (as well as AACOM) say that we have to do |
