Pt with renal stone: Which is the choice for the boards?
1) CT renal protocol with contrast
2) IV pyelography
Pt's BUN/Cr are normal
Both can be first line test???

Given the 2 choices, I'd go for #2. I believe a CT renal stone protocol is done WITHOUT contrast. If given a choice between CT renal stone protocol without contrast and #2, I'd choose the former.

CTs evaluating for kidney stones are without contrast--too difficult to see the stone with contrast present. I agree with phatfarm...

I'd definitely go for US first if it's a choice. Better then both of the others you've mentioned.

Good call SB...better yet, get a urine sample (probably obviously done...).

I think the CT WITHOUT contrast is the best test. Appreciate the feedback!
