Thanks... See you there next year! How was the biochem/cell bio test? Good luck with the first year!

Welcome, welcome! And congratulations! This is a decision you'll be happy with throughout your career--I know I am VERY happy to be here! :)

Cell bio was WAY easier than biochem. It wasn't *easy*, just much more manageable.

It'll be rad. I checked out your myspace... good taste in music. Mine is www.myspace.com/misparas.

I'm excited to start at DMU!! What were your deciding factors?

For me...
1. Des Moines is a great city. For my wife and I this was a major deciding factor.
2. Helpful and friendly staff. The students seemed to be close and social. They wanted to help.
3. The school is awesome. Great reputation! Well established as the 2nd D.O. school.
4. I don't see any other schools facilities comeing close!

This is just a start... I could go on for while.

My deciding factors were:
1.) Faciliteies were soooo nice
2.) Great reputation as a school
3.) Everyone was nice (students, faculty, professors)
4.) Some unexplainable reasons that DMU always just felt right for me, don't really have explanation for that one.

Well, here's your first piece of unasked for advice from an 09er. Ignore anyone who tells you to take the summer before medical school off. Instead, buy this book:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0443066124/qid=1130645275/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-9627058-3193463?v=glance&s=books

Read as much of it as you can over the summer. It's an excellent self-study guide for Anatomy. The course is divided up as follows:

Test 1: Upper Extremity
Test 2: Head & Neck
Test 3: Thorax & Abdomen
Test 4: Lower Extremity

This advice is even more relevant if you're starting med school as a non-science major with the basic prereqs and no (or few) advanced science courses at an undergraduate level.

Good luck!

I second Mil's advice. I wish someone had given me this hint a year ago. Bought that book and it has been SUCH a help--way better than the assigned textbook. Much cleaner, much easier to read and understand.

Matter of fact, I recommended they bring it on as a textbook when I evaluated the course.

Mil, remind me to tell you about a discussion I had w/staff re: this book.

I disagree. Damned first year advice.

Take it from me: It's better to put off studying until the absolute last second, then have an emotional episode the night before, not sleep and drink caffeinated beverages until the minute before the exam, and have spastic colon syndrome the rest of the following day.

I mean, that's how MEN do it. I'm sure that some of the girls planned ahead, but we're MEN. We do it MAN way.

(This is very sarcastic in case you missed it. Studying anatomy isn't a bad idea if you have the time.)

i'm a first year at DMU also, and yes studying is hard. the classes are more than you are used to. so, what can you do about it? the biggest asset you have, though not a lot of it, is time. you have to be busy all the time and organized. i am looking at med school as my main focus. i have other things to do and i make time accordingly, but for me to stay on top of my studies, sometimes these other things have to take a back seat. this has proven to be effective.

i did not study anatomy over the summer. i looked over a netter's atlas and tried to make sense of it. but what took me hours to look through on my own, we covered, and i understood in class in about an hour.

my only advice in this post is do not underestimate the committment required of you ONCE you start classes. until then, geez enjoy being human for a little while longer.

i do not want to sound overly negative about courseload; this is in fact, not true. i would not want to be doing anything else, and hence my motivation has not waned while facing a bear bigger than myself. good luck.

I am gonna agree with mad cow on this on. yeah, sure it will help to study the summer before, that is, if you study the right material and commit to learning it. Likely neither of those two will happen, so don't waste your time. Enjoy the last free moments before med school, 'cause once you're here they will be few and far between.

Anyways, welcome '10ers. (That doesn't roll off the tongue like '09ers. too bad for you guys). You picked a good school.

I don't want to sound overly negative about courseload either. It's definately doable, but really nothing in your academic careers (including the MCAT, or studying for it) prepares you for the volume of material that's waiting. For me, it would have made more sense to start early than take the summer off and tackle it all at once.

I can't wait! It should be fun! On average, how much free time per day do you make for yourselves without getting too far behind? What can I tell my wife to really expect?

Misparas, from the time I started in the second week of August, I've only sat down to watch TV three times.

Especially in the first couple of months, while you're still getting a feel for things... and particularly before the tests, you are spending at least 7 hours a day studying... and I mean *studying*... not just flipping through notes.

I do try to spend the extra time I have with my kids, though. Just tonight, we made a bunch of Halloween themed food, had some friends over and watched The Nightmare Before Christmas. Then we sat around shooting the breeze for a bit.

So far, the hardest subjects for me have been biochem and anatomy. I've never had either one before, so I really have to put a LOT of time into them. I'm doing well so far, but it has required a true investment in time, energy, and brain power. I do feel that I could have easily combined some studying with relaxing in the month or two before we started. And that would have done something to lighten the stress when it got down to crunch time.

The work is doable, and you'll love it because you've wanted it so bad. But it is WORK. If you have absolutely nothing to do in the few weeks before school starts, I would pick up that anatomy book and do some review so at least it looks familiar to you. Learn your cranial nerves, what they innervate, whether it's sensory or motor, and try to pick up some arm/neck/head vasculature. That alone would have helped me SO much.

If you're really busy and don't have time to do it... then don't worry about it. You'll do fine either way... it's just nice to be able to spread it out over a longer period of time to really give yourself a chance to savor it and understand it. Instead of having to gulp it all down and take a quick breath before you gulp down more and so on.

Welcome to DMU! We'll be here to help (or continue to scare you) when you get here! :p

MsEvolution - Thanks for the advice! I will be lucky enough to have had anatomy and biochem already... but I know I haven't scratched the surface! I'm excited for the chance to learn. It'll be hard to give up some of my lazier activities, but it'll be worth it.

One other question that I posted about in a different thread, but I'll repeat it... Would paying my deposit this early hurt my chances of getting offered a scholarship? I'm not expecting that to happen, but I've heard of people getting offered around signing day in december. Any opinions?

you shouldn't really worry..having your family with you is a huge plus! alot of people are in your shoes. On average i had 2-3 hour free time each day..that includes lunches, midday naps, making a fool out of myself, working out at DMU's gym..etc.....but then it really depends on your studying style. The biggest mistake that you could make is preparing yourself to study 24/7..

on the scholarship note...it depends if you qualify and if they have the funds (generated by donations/loan fees). there are so many people that want to get into DMU that it would be ridiculous for the school to offer scholorships as a way to get people to come. Go ahead and pay the deposit...you've made a great choice! Congrats!!!!!!!!

I'm also a 1st year student at DMU so I thought I would throw in my 2 cents concerning the workload here. The volume of material is the thing that will blow you away. But it is managable, you just need to use your time wisely and study in a way that is effective for you. THe great thing about DMU is that all the lectures are placed on MP3 along with the power point presentation. So you can take 3 hours of lectures speed them up and get through them in about 90 minutes thus freeing up time for more intense studying.

It is also important to note that there are many days that you are done with classes by noon (on average 2 days per week). And other days that you are out by 2:30 or 3:00. So what I have been able to do is study in the library while the lecture is in session (if you are not getting anything out of a lecture in the first 10 minutes, get out and study on your own.), download the MP3s, review them and study for an additonal 2 hours (while taking time out for lunch and going to the gym for and hour) all before dinner time. Of course this can change depending on anatomy lab and/or OMM schedules. This frees up the evening for some quality time with my wife. On weekends I usually have 1 day off and on the other I put in 4-5 hours of studying. Now all this changes 3 days before a big test (biochem/anatomy) at which time I will put in 4-5 hours in the evening at the library.

The key thing is balance. I had a number of doctors tell me to make sure I had a life outside of medical school and not to let all the studying eat you alive (and it will if you let it). You need to find what is most effective for you, do your best and not sweat the rest.

If you feel that DMU is the place for you I don't think you need to spend money on other interviews. If you call the admissions office at LECOM and explain, they'll be fine. I only had one other interview at KCOM after DMU. I origionally thought that KCOM would be my first choice. So I went to check it out. It's up to you.

There are a whole bunch of apartments up and down grand. I'm at the Windsor Terrace apartments right across the street from the new building. There are quite a few people in the Imperial next door to me. Then there are people who live in West Des Moines and commute in to school as well.

$620 for a 3 bedroom/ 2 bathroom apt. in SE Des Moines. 15 minute commute. Not as nice an area as WD and not as convenient as living next door... but cheap! The apts are being managed by a second year right now and there are 4 of us first years living here w/our families.

Hello fellow 2010'ers! I'm really glad that this thread was started; I feel it's important to be able to get to know each other before we start next August!

One question I had for anyone, current or future student, was this: is anyone applying/on scholarship at DMU? I'm not necessarily thinking school awards, but programs like HPSP or NHSC? I'm really thinking about applying for NHSC and was curious if there are many that attend DMU who are in either type of program. The thought of getting out of Med school debt-free is quite enticing. Plus, I am currently working at a Free Health Clinic and at a homeless shelter here in KC, and I love it. I really feel called to help those most in need-

Also, I'm curious about apartments as well. I've met a fair amount of students living all over Des Moines, and they all seem to like their housing choices. Any areas/complexes to stay away from, due to price, location, or reputation? I have a feeling that the biggest hurdle for me will be convincing the parents that my girlfriend and I will be living together next year...

Thanks all! Glad to be attending DMU with you next year-

P.S. - Tenacious DO, love the name! Where in St. Paul are you? I am originally from Winona, MN, about 100 miles SE on the Mississippi. I have a girlfriend whose originally from up there - she went to Totino-Grace if that sounds familiar...

There are several HSPSers at DMU - if you're interested in this I'd contact your local recruiter so that he can put you in touch with the officer in charge of medical recruitment in your area. Doing it before you get here means that you have all your ducks in a row before school starts which is always a good thing.

Another option that you may not have considered is the medical officer program through your state national guard. They don't pay for your education upfront (but do pay for a not insignificant portion of it through loan repayments as you complete residency) and the pay you get as an officer in school isn't as high as it would be through the HPSP. However, it does offer geographic stability when you're done and perhaps more importantly the ability to complete a civilian residency in a speciality entirely of your choosing. There is also no requirement to serve as a GMO between the completion of medical school and the beginning of residency.

I'm contimplating these programs to pay for school, such as joining the Air Force to pay for school. But, I haven't given it much thought yet, I guess I still have some time to research it and think about it.

I was seriously considering the military route and feel that it is a great program. I haven't talked to anyone who is doing it who hasn't liked it. I just got the feeling that it wasn't a fit for me. I would try the other one, but I'm not certain I'm going into primary care. I don't want to limit myself from the start. However, if either are a match for you, I'm sure they are awesome programs.

I want to let you guys know that I HATE where I live...and I can't stress this point enough.

I live at Olde English Village in WDM. I never got to come look at apts before school and just chose one from the list of recommended apartments off the DMU site.

The walls are too thin, my neighbors are rude, and there is no way I can study here. It completely stresses me out to be here.

I hate the commute every morning, even though it's not long, it's a pain. I would highly suggest looking to live somewhere near school. I wish I had such luxury and wish I could afford to move now.

There are some other students who live here but they don't seem to have a problem. But I live on the 2nd floor right, and I can hear everything! The office staff are extremely helpful, dont get me wrong on that.

Just my $.02

There are a number of older apartment buildings very close to campus that are nice (but alittle more expensive). Alta Casa on Ingersoll Ave (40th and Ingersoll) is a great place to live. It was built in the 1920's, has many unique features (not a cookie cutter type apartment), great neighbors and tghe landlord is fantastic. You can walk to school in about 10-15 minutes and drive there in under 5 mins. Again, you'll pay a bit more but its worth it to feel comfortable and truly enjoy where you live.

My $0.02 on living arrangements (and that happens to be darn close to my checking account balance!) ;)

I live in Urbandale, and absolutely, 100% LOVE IT! I wouldn't trade it for anything. There are a lot of options if you don't want to live right next to campus! My commute is, on average, about 15 minutes. I'm from San Francisco, so to me, there is NO traffic in Des Moines. Plus, I get to school normally around 630 am everyday (to work out and do things like that), so I usually miss what most people would call traffic. It really isn't bad at all! I like being away from school, because when I go home, I don't feel like I'm still there! I don't look at the window and see DMU...which as as much as I like the place, is nice!

Just like picking a school...it's really going to be up to you! I like being away from school, but some people, understandably, like the convenience of being next door!

Good luck...keep postin' if you have questions!

Couple things, I'm definitely coming to DMU, unless I get into my state school. I was accepted late October. Anyways couple of questions:

1. Anyone have a book list or anything like that?

2. My family (wife and 3 kids) would like to find a town home or something of the sort. Any ideas or directions to point us in? A small commute 15-20 minutes wouldn't be out of the question, or living close wouldn't bother us at all either.

If you're looking for townhomes, and don't mind a small commute, definitely check out Urbandale, and West Des Moines! THere is a ton of new construction and all kinds of choices. With that said, I don't remember seeing many townhomes of the size I would suspect you want. The largets I saw, was a two bedroom...but I'm sure there are bigger out there!

As far as books are concerned - wait until you get to school. Some books, although the profs say they're required, really aren't necessary. You'll learn this as you talk with other students, and with the bookstore employees (they are extremely helpful!).

Cheers,

Has anyone had the time to check out the lake just north of town. I went to the east side where the park and boat launch are. I noticed signs saying there was some stuff on the west side as well (toward the military museum). It seemed nice. Are there any fun activities which would be available to students up there. A public beach? Boat rentals??

Also, any hockey players in the crowd?

I can't wait! It should be fun! On average, how much free time per day do you make for yourselves without getting too far behind? What can I tell my wife to really expect?

I usually block off a solid 24 hours from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon (except on the weekend before an anatomy test). This gives me some relaxation time as well as time to pay the bills, do the laundry, and so on. Of course you pay for this strategy on Sunday, which becomes a noon-to-late study session on most weekends. I'm usually reading/studying 5 hours a day otherwise.

Next semester, I'm going to try something different: class in the morning, get done at noon, and after a lunch break study till 5 or 6 in the evening. Then once you go home, don't look at it again (sort of like a 9-5 job). That's how I handled my toughest premed course (summer school physics) and it worked out fine.

I would not be worried...from the sounds of it, if they don't have an interest in you at this point, they would have put your application on hold. I know it also depends on how many people accept their acceptances, and most deposits are probably due at the end of December like mine. I have also been accepted to KCUMB, but after a long, hair pulling, session I decided on DMU. Although I really liked KCUMB for many reasons as you already know, I just feel that DMU is a better choice for me. If you get in, you should really consider it because then we could be roomies :D . I already posted this question on the general pre-osteopathic forum, but this way I can hopefully get input from DMUers. Should I take biochem in undergraduate? I graduate in December and would love to be done with classes, plus save the money of no more classes, but if people that have been through biochem at DMU say that it is a really good idea to take it in undergrad then I will. I'm looking for feedback from science and non-science backgrounds...is it a hard med school class?

Thanks

I had Biochem for the first time here, at DMU. It is one of the best organized courses here, and the profs are really great. That said, it IS work. But I did well, as did many other people I know who had never had it. What they tell you at the beginning of the course is that undergrad classes only help you 2 weeks into the course here... after that, it's new territory.

I would say, save your money and just come prepared to put your time and effort in. Everything they want you to know will be on the handouts, so you don't even need a book.

Did you take the additional I believe PBL portion/elective of this class that is offered. I think I remember that being offered and it being very popular. If so did it help you at all, and would you recommend it?

I didn't take the PBL course, even though I really did want to. Coming back to school after an 8 year pause, I wanted to have a chance to really get a feel for how much work was going to be involved. I felt very protective of my time and at that point, I decided I better hold off on adding anything to my plate.

Since then I've taken a different elective and I've even signed up for the MHA dual degree program. Some people think I'm insane... but I think I'm just one of those people who has a natural tendency to overbook themselves, u know? :)

The people I know who've taken it have loved it. They felt they had a chance to apply what they were learning to clinical cases. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) the class meets once a week for a couple of hours in the evening.

I'm not sure if it's only open to 1st years... but if 2nd years can take it, I will strongly consider it come next fall.

I didn't take the PBL portion of the course, mostly because I was concerned about the added time burden. I started school here having had the minimum science requirements for entrance + half a semester of undergraduate biochemistry and wanted to make sure that I took care of business with the required coursework since it was essentially all new material for me.

In a way I wish that I had taken the course because our Biochemistry department is fantastic and all our Biochem professors are great...but considering the workload after Anatomy and the other courses went into high gear I can't say that I regret my decision.

If you are coming here as a biology or premed undergrad major it might make more sense to take electives since (at least for some of this material) it will have been the second time you've seen it. If you're not, you might want to think twice about adding electives to your schedule since most of what you will be exposed to will be new material.

hey,
yeah, i took biochem before starting here as a post-bacc course. ms. evolution is right, it IS work. I was happy I took biochem beforehand though. there is a lot of groundwork that they cover here and I felt it necessary to know what to expect. for example, we covered the TCA cycle in about 15 minutes. i also feel that biochem is probably the best course to start med school with: it's like welcome to the rest of you life, now go study for 10 hours.
most undergraduate courses are like 30 lectures in a semester, here its 50 ? lectures (600 pages of notes) in 9 weeks, four exams and a cumulative final. while it is also true that you cover a semster of UG biochem in the first month, there is also a lot of genetics covered in the tail end of the class. so, if you've had cell bio or at least genetics, you will be in a good position. it's up to you to be in the same good position for the first half of the course. i am a bit older than most bears so i was happy that i had more reinforcement rather than the eat and run mentality you can get into with new courses (like immunology ;) ) good luck.

I signed up for MHA because it fulfills the pragmatic side of me. No matter what kind of practice you go into, it's something you can use. It also opens other doors (hospital administration, right off the top of my head).

I actually haven't started the courses yet... that starts in January. They don't let you start in your 1st semester because they really want you to get a good feel for the courseload first.

But a good chunk of the MHA classes are offered on-line. Even though the program requires 45 credit hours, if you're dual degree, 9 credits of your DO ed go towards it, so now you're looking at 36 credits. I'm planning on really spreading them out while I'm doing the class portion of med school. I plan to kick it into higher gear during summer and during rotations. I've heard that students who sign up for this usually find it quite doable... and there are a few who actually go for the triple degree thing... DO, MHA, MPH. Wow...

Hi...saw your post about "where to live."

DMU is on the south side of grand. The north side of grand is lined with a variety of apartments that will let you walk to class in 5-10 minutes.

From what I've gathered, 3000 Grand and Grand Prix look to be the "nicest"...

I'm at Windsor Terrace which is next door to Grand Prix

Imperial is next door to us.

Some of the apartments have internet provided through DMU so you don't have to buy it on your own - Windsor Terrace isn't one of them.

If you don't mind driving to school there are a lot of apartments available around Des Moines as well. You might also consider buying a place in town if you're going to be here for 4 years and do your rotations locally.

I'll take some digital pictures of Windsor Terrace and post them to this thread and maybe some first/second years who live in the other complexes can do the same for their properties.

Congratulations you guys - welcome aboard. This is really a great school; you'll enjoy it.

Well sent in my deposit today. I'm still waiting on one other school atm, but would definitely be very happy at DMU. Any good suggestions on where to live. I have a wife and 3 small children. Looking at town homes perhaps, decently close to school. My wife most likely won't be able to work initially either.

I live about 15 minutes from campus. 3 bdrm/2 bathroom apt for pretty cheap. Three other 1st years live in this complex, too. They have wives & family. You can't beat the price, the place is clean, and coming from Seattle, 15 minutes is nothing in terms of a commute. Driving in the snow is way easier than I thought it would be, too.

Wow, that sounds like a pretty decent deal. Do you think you post post any pics by chance? My wife, little rugrat, and I will definitely have to check out that place. Is it in a decent neighborhood? I live w/ my wife at the Imperial (directly across from the AC entrance). Although some halls have a distinct smell to them, we got lucky b/c our hall isn't one of them. It is very cheap and the apartments are pretty nice. We pay $580 a month for our one bedroom (Two bedrooms are $620, I think), WiFi is from DMU (free), and are only responsible for the electric bill (~ $20/month).

By living here we have been able to live very comfortably on my wife's teacher salary and I have been able to reduce my second semester loan amount (*cheering*). Congrats on choosing DMU.

It's O.K. dude...... you are just dealing with small man syndrome. Unless a person is over 6'5" and 240 then it is something you will have to cope with. I'm sure DMU offers counseling and such :D Oh yeah, check this out. Wife made me sell my baby (Dodge Stealth R/T) for a Dodge Grand Caravan !!!!!!
Ack..... gotta be all responsbile and stuff....... at least the Caravan is a sport edition (j/K)! Did I mention that it came complete with built in baby seats??? Aye, seems to me she's planning for more?!?!?

Dorm style, I guess. It's hard going from living in a house, to living in an apartment... we'd been living in our home 3 years when we moved here... and we've had to adjust to apartment living again.

But, it's temporary. Our home back in Washington is waiting for us with open arms. We miss it and look forward to going back.

After you send in your deposit, you'll start getting all kind of papers in the mail. Then it will stop for months, and then start back up again, I think in April or May. You won't really know anything about orientation until I think early May. Then you'll recieve a big packet of stuff. It's fun waiting for stuff, but as the time gets closer you'll start wanting to be at school already. Don't rush it. Enjoy life a little bit. It goes by way to fast.

I honestly can't say. I don't think that they have seperate educational departments like those you mentioned at the school (we DO have surgical skills labs as part of the curriculum though). But there is a clinic right next to the school, and I'm sure specialists work there. As to how much learning 1st and 2nd years do there underneath these specialists I couldn't say...

Perhaps a question that should be asked of current DMU students? Maybe in the Osteopathic forums?

On another note, am I the only one who races home from work each day to rip open the mail box to see if DMU has sent anything regarding next year? I'm sure its normal. But for some reason I have hit this massive laid back stage. I'm home on break and won't be checking my mail for 3 weeks! I don't mountain bike but I do hike, camp, fish, hunt, and in general enjoy good ol' outdoor fun.

I don't know what everyone else is thinking, but once we get closer to that time for room/place hunting - I'm after simple and cheap. I'm a young guy with no dependents and will be looking for a 3 bed/2 bath place within walking distance. Snagging something as previously mentioned for $600-700 dollars equates to a nice cheap ~$200/month rent if two others take a room. So have it be known, *standing on a milk crate* I am searching for two roommates who want to live cheap!

So when does everyone anticipate that they'll be looking for a place and possibly even signing?? Similar to you, Goodrain, I've been obsessing about searching for places in and around Des Moines online. Nevertheless, I know there are many places not listed online, and I'll have to do a lot of searching by foot and through word of mouth. I'd definitely say that finding a place to live next year is the one thing I'm obsessing about the most right now. My girlfriend (fiance?) will be coming with me, so she'll be my roommate of sorts...otherwise I'd for sure live with another student(s). By the way, I'm a 23 y/o dude (in case you couldn't figure the male part out, I decided to go ahead and let ya know).

Greetings All....Yes, I am fired up about the educational opportunitites at DMU, BUT I am glad to hear some off-topic chatter. It sounds like there is a good group of work hard/play hard peeps in the DMU Crew. I have taken a few tours through the DM area and I am excited about the possibilities of non-skool activity. Saylorville Lake ~15 min north of campus with lots of camping, boating, MB trails, etc. The lake/pond/river in DM just south of campus looks good for beach Vball, picnics, running. A buddy of mine worked of the I-Cubs and said it was good time....living in MN, I gotta love a chance for outdoor baseball. The DT DM Bar scene has good possibilities , I am looking for recommendations of good local eats in DM beyond Applebee's or OCB. The new Well's Fargo Center seems to be a good sized venue to get a concert or 2 (Omaha, Chi and Mpls are not too far).

There was a note about Ragbrai....all I hear is good things. I know of an established group that does it every year. I should clearify that it is more like a Drinking Team with a Bike Riding Problem.

On the housing situation.....I too am looking to find a location near campus, 2-3 other guys/girls looking to work hard/play hard.

Hope you all have a great Christmas....Travel Safe. ;)

My girlfriend did this with her mom and some friends of the family (they're originally from Iowa), so I will confirm that it is indeed one giant party where people happen to ride bikes occasionally. The majority of people just party the entire time. They all said the experience was unbelievable (and they didn't even get to party as much as some of the others), and intend on doing it every year from here on out. If you do in fact want to do it for the actual challenge, then you will definitely not be disappointed in that respect either. It's supposed to be a very intense week long ride that will challenge most any experienced rider.

It wasn't a deciding factory by any means, but I was really let down by Kirksville's gym (in case you saw it). I don't even expect a lot of nice stuff like what DMU carries, but KCOM had so very little to offer as far as a gym goes. If I'm going to be studying as much as I intend on studying, then I need a good workout (and a good beer) to blow off a bit of stress.

Ok, well, because being social is always good and because we'll probably have to see each other regularly in shorts, hello to my fellow 2MX'ers! (See, it's still a cool number.) Like everybody here, I am absolutely ecstatic about starting school this fall. I'm not overly excited about coming here, because well, I'm already here in WDM. (I do like it here a lot though, except there's no arcade/laser tag or H&M.)

To keep things short and sweet, I am from a soon-to-be west 'burb of Chicago. I worked in biotechnology for a little bit and am currently working on my MPH at DMU. I love dancing, pilates, lifting weights, studying different cultures and languages (and speaking Spanish when I can), going to movies, sampling different restaurants, exploring, etc. etc. My boyfriend and I are always on the go, so I think I can definitely offer my .02 about different restaurants and shopping here, but sadly, I can't say much about dancing, yet. I'll take suggestions though. Anyways, I think that this thread is a wonderful appetizer to orientation and it sounds like we do have quite a fun class. I am looking forward to meeting everybody, and I hope everybody has a wonderful and safe holiday!

Felicitaciones y Bienvenida Megustamaiz! I would love to practice Spanish! How do you like the MPH program? I am currently enrolled an MPH program, but I think that I am going to settle for a certificate in Public Health and transfer my credits to DMU and finish the MPH up there. Do you like the program? Any insight would be great. Also, are you in an apartment in WDM, how are the apartments out there and what's the "commute" like to school?

so what's the restaurant scene in des moines like? are there cool restaurants/coffee shops aside from chain stuff. i noticed there were a few microbrews, which seems promising. as a vegetarian, would it be really hard for me to eat out?

also, outdoorsy stuff questions. it looks like biking is definitely a go, but what about hiking? also, do people do winter sports like cross country skiing and snowshoeing. dh and i are trying to get into snowsnoeing, and it'd be cool to be able to do that if we move to des moines. i know the snow's not lacking. :)

dunno for sure. i made a deposit, and the financial considerations at dmu are the most favorable. also, i am sort of granola and like the holistic/preventative care type of stuff, and dmu is a good fit for that. i know a lot of dmu students aren't into that, but it looks like dmu makes that type of study possible. so, it's a strong possibility but not 100% right now. yeah, i'm indecisive. :)

I work as a Patient Assistant at a Free Health Clinic in K.C. Basically I do a lot of the preliminary things before patients are seen by the doctor... I love it 'cause I only really have certification as a C.N.A. in a completely different state and they let me do all sorts of crazy/cool things that I would never get to experience anywhere else. I love free clinics... :D

Example: This last Wednesday I assisted the FP physician in removing genital warts from a patient with HPV. Kinda weird, yet cool at the same time, feeling like I'm doing something useful instead of getting in the way...

Wow, we had temps in the 70's for Christmas weekend and they will continue throughout the week! In fact, it is going to get up to about 78 today! I guess I better enjoy this before next winter in Des Moines.

Came across this video, and I figured it might entertain at least a few of my fellow Class of 2010 DMUers. I think we're potentially looking at either the reincarnation of the Nortorious BIG or the next David Hasselhoff (sp?...who cares).

Anyways, enjoy. I'll be posting any other funny videos/pictures I see along the way.

jbone,
I'd call the school. But, from what I've noticed looking at other schools' schedules all the orientation things are done within one week of school starting. So If you don't carry too far over into august I bet you'll be fine.

Electric,
That was weird. Funny but weird. I hope you didn't waste too much time digging that up.

Everyone,
Has anything arrived by mail from the school? I'm currently away from my mailbox and am curious.

Haha...Yeah, on second thought it was a bit creepy/weird, but at the time I laughed. Trust me, I didn't spend anytime looking it up. There are a couple websites I browse at work when I'm bored, so I just happened to come across. I'm really just trying to incite a little humor on the board, and hopefully some others post funny pics/videos/jokes that they come across. Wow, am I seriously this bored???

JBone-

Nothing in the mail. Nice avatar....it actually reminds me of a cat I once owned. To make a long story short, my childhood cat was being raped by a stray cat on a regular basis. It was awkward to say the least.

I'm trying to figure that out myself. I finish school in mid may. I'm thinking early July would be good. Enough time to move in and get settled, while also exploring all the ways to have fun for later in the school year.

Felicitaciones y Bienvenida Megustamaiz! I would love to practice Spanish! How do you like the MPH program? Any insight would be great. Also, are you in an apartment in WDM, how are the apartments out there and what's the "commute" like to school?

Hello!

To answer your questions:

MPH program--Well, I just finished my first three courses for the MPH program, and my experiences so far have been good. One great thing is that courses are flexible. With some courses you can choose between a face-to-face or online format. Coursework is also manageable but not a cakewalk by any means, especially for online courses. Instructors are great and helpful, but most of them are not full-time.

Apartments--I can't give you any help with apartments in WDM. From what I understand, they are pretty expensive. If possible purchasing a townhome would be a .

Commute--The commute isn't too bad. You can pretty much try to gauge traffic and then determine a travel route. I-235 can be a terror in the morning, but it beats the traffic in the Chicago area. You may also opt to take Grand all the way to school, which shaves off at least 5 minutes. It all depends on where you're leaving from. I would leave at least 30 minutes before school starts to be safe. The commute in the evening usually takes me 15 minutes or less, and I live on the far west side of WDM.

Hope this helps!!

Hello!

Ok, well, restaurants here range from the ethnically eclectic to the very mainstream/cookie cutter eateries to everything in between. So, yes, I would say that in my opinion, there are definitely lots of cool restaurants, although, the authentic Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants are lacking. Ok, I am a hardcore carnivore, but even as a vegetarian, I don't think that you'll have too much of a problem finding suitable cuisine around here. Many restaurants offer meatless dishes. It's just a matter of scanning the menu and exploring. Here are some of my favorite places:

Ethnic/unique: Nut Pob (Thai, S. DSM), Aguila Real (Mexican, WDM), China Chef (great cheap lunch, S. DSM), China Cafe (great cheap lunch, Johnston), House of Hunan (good take-out/delivery, WDM), Ohana (Japanese, WDM), Mezzodi's (Italian, S. DSM), Cosi Cucina (Italian, Urbandale), Waterfront (seafood, best clam chowder, WDM), Felix and Oscar's (delicious deep dish pizza, N. DSM), 801 Steakhouse (pricey but delicious, DT DSM), Noodle Zoo (make your own noodle dish plus sandwiches, WDM), Stella's (50's diner with best malts, Urbandale)

Chains: Cheesecake F
