Hey guys.. I'm trying to find some info out of UF-Jacksonville. I am really limited to the Florida schools, in particularly Jacksonville due to family situations and would like to find out as much information as possible. I'm doing an away rotation for November. Any pointers, words of advice etc...
thanks :)

I'm also very interested in Jacksonville, specifically their MS IV rotation. Any help?

Word is for 4th yr rotations that there is a lot of autonomy, also it is a true "county" experience. Lots of real smart attendings but little time for students the place is really run by the residents. Thats all 2nd hand info but it is from a good source. Sorry I couldnt be more help.

By chance are any of you international medical students? I would like to do a rotation in ER as well and I am from Florida. Thanks in advance.

Ectopic,
Thanks for the info. I'm looking for a true "county" experience for an away rotation because my medical school and home ED is a very academic institution. I had originally planned to go to Charity in New Orleans, but doubt that's a possibility given everthing that happened with the hurricane and the hospital. Now I'm thinking about Jacksonville and Parkland in Dallas as alternatives, but am still looking around.

I rotated there in September of last year as a 4th year. It's true that there's not a lot of time for teaching of medical students, however there is great pathology, and you get the opportunity to do a lot of procedures. Additionally there is lots of great trauma experience. The only downside is that many of the off-service rotations have "issues" from what I've heard. Also it's the worst-smelling ED I've ever worked in (and I'm from MLK in LA!).
If you want to work in a busy county ED, and work in sunny Florida, then Jacksonville is a great choice.

Just be aggressive...I rotated there as an MS4 three years ago. I loved it. Not only did I get to do a number of central lines and EJs, I also did 5 intubations and a paracardiocentesis (sp?). Plus, they were ~16 8-hour shifts. Dont forget to take a nice suit. They will give you a courtesy interview during your rotation...best of luck

thanks for the pointers/advice. Head out tomorrow with my procedures manual in hand. I'm excited that it's so "involved." Once again thanks. If anyone else has any more advice, I'm a sponge eager to absorb!
