I saw all of the other threads for other schools and figured I would start ours! Let's get to know each other before we get there next fall, share ideas, and help each other out with this tedious process leading up to orientation. I look forward to seeing you all when classes start and getting to know you on the forums!

(Hey guys, I posted this under the premed section, but thought it might fit in here too.)

Hey guys! First off, congratulations on getting accepted! We’ve just finished up our block exam week so people have been a little fired. Sorry no one got back to you.

Anyway FutureHuskerDoc, if you are in school now Roger will send you a letter around April asking for your official transcript. You’re all ready in, so just make sure that you pass your classes and graduate. Again… MAKE SURE YOU GRADUATE. We lost a guy a week before classes started because he didn’t finish his degree. It’s one of the pre-req’s for our school, so don’t slack off too much now that you’re in. (oh, the guy who didn’t have his degree got rolled into the 2010 class so that he can finish, they aren’t that heartless) If you are planning of buying a house up here you might start looking sometime soon, other than that it’s way too early to be looking at apartments or anything else. Just enjoy life for a while. My class started a google group that really helped people get to know one another. You guys might think about doing the same.

Again, congratulations and welcome to the family. If you have any questions (and I’m sure you do) feel free to PM me.

Contratulations!
I wish I could put into words what your learning experience will be like. I suppose 'intense' is a good word.
I wish you all the best.
Make sure you all start making living arangements soon. It is hard to find affordable housing/apartments once everybody tries to move in at the same time.
Good luck.

lol, intense is an understatement. As far as housing is concerned...I signed the paperwork to my apartment a month before I moved in. But if you are going to buy a house, which would probably be a REALLY good investment, starting to look now wouldn't be a bad idea. Congratulations!!!

Hey Everyone,
I will be interviewing on Jan 3, and was wondering if anyone has any advice?

Congrats Class 2010 and welcome to the Touro Nevada family!!!!

Advice for those interviewing is simple. Do a search for TUNCOM or Touro Nevada with the friendly search button. There is some great information you will find that has been posted before. Also PM any of us current students with your questions that are unanswered from the various threads you will find.

Good luck!!

Hey Everyone,

My best advice is just be yourself. And ask questions! Do some research on the school and the types of things going on in this state, exempli gratia, mal-practice insurance premiums, no. of people uninsured, the number of years required before you can legally practice medicine in NV, the costs of medicine (NV ranks 4th in the nation for having the most expensive health care costs). Know a little bit about our state licensure boards, etc. Read up on NOMA, AOA, and SOMA.

Happy Holidays Class of 2010!!! I don't usually say this but...carpe diem...cherish every minute of your free time. Spend as much time with your friends, family and significant others as you can...especially during the holidays. Build as many memories as you can. Live life like your previous one is about to end...because in a way it is...Having said this... med school is definitely a unique experience. There is a lot to fear, but there is A LOT to be excited about and to look forward to. It's a weird kind of craziness. You are stress out to the max, but in a strange way, YOU LIKE IT. You build friendships along the way that you are sure (atleast I am) will be lifelong frienships. In those few hours that you might have on a Friday night, you build memories that you will remember forever. And along the way, through all of this torment, you are reminded that it will all be so very much worth it in the end. Again, congratulations and happy holidays! :)

Hey Class fo 2010! I just received my email from Roger that I've been accepted! Really excited, anyone else out there who got the same great news?
A question for those already at Touro about housing. They mentioned that the housing market is pretty tough. I was wondering if there are any certain areas I need to stay away from, and any that I should look into?

Thanks, and looking forward to meeting everyone! :D

Congratulations on your acceptance!

The housing market is a little crazy if you are looking to buy a home. If you just want to rent there are more then enough apartments and houses nearby. Rent isn’t bad, but depending on where you are coming from there can be a little bit of sticker shock. My little one bedroom apartment is $860. If you can find some friends, a house is a much better deal. A few of my buddies just rented a really nice three bedroom house for $1300.

Everything right around school is nice. If you want to be a little further away, look into Green Valley or anything around Black Mountain. Stay away from a Las Vegas zip code and anything in old or historic Henderson. The rent will be cheaper, but this is the “bad” part of town.

Anyway, feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I’m more than happy to help.

Again, congratulations and welcome to the family.

Congrats on your acceptances!

Housing is not bad, I can walk to school and pay $750 a month for a one bedroom, 2 bedrooms are around $450 / person. Most people live within a 5 minute drive of school.

Some information to help those making decisions:

This is an old story, but this facility is now recognized as a world class surgery training facility. Every weekend about 4-6 students from Touro volunteer and gain experience at this facility.

Hello! I've changed my mind. I am going to join you in henderson next fall! I was all lined up to go elsewhere, but I just can't leave the west.

So, I'm seriously thinking about buying a house/condo. Can anyone point me in the right direction? My dad and grandpa are going to help me financially, but I have never done anything like this, so I really don't know where to begin. I was looking on craigslist, and saw a lot of nice properties, but I don't know what to do next. Also, any current students have location tips? Thanks!

Congrats on your decision. I was a little torn too after hearing from LECOM-PA. I live in NY right now, but grew up in SoCal, and went to UCI for undergrad, and I'm definitely missing the west. Ironically, my parents purchased property in Henderson last year before I even knew that I was going to apply to med school there. I'll try to get some advice from them and let you know.

1hotaartichoke just did a massive house search. Send her a PM on sat and she can probably steer you towards some good resources. (Saturday afternoon really… blocks end tomorrow and we need some time to sober up  )

Off the top of my head… stay away from anything that says “old Henderson” of “historic henderson.” Greenvalley is really nice, but a little on the pricy side. Everything around black mountain is also nice (that’s where I am).

Hey, congrats to everyone else who have been accepted. For those looking for a house, try www.pulte.com.

1hotaartichoke
02-23-2006, 08:24 AM
pulte is good but expensive. there are also KB homes, DR horton, Engle Homes, Concordia homes, and Beazer homes. I know there are some good homes by Concordia going up soon. the development is called Avalon. You should be able to google any of these h ome developers and be able to find their homes. KB homes is building a whole new development on Horizen Ridge and Gibson called the villas at black mountain (literally up the street from the school.) the Avalon homes are on horizen at the end, and that location is nice as well. Not too far away. About a 5 minute drive, tops. There are also some 1 story homes for sale next to the Avalon homes on Horizen. Those are also by KB homes. And don't forget resale homes. the zip codes i would look for houses in are: 89012, 89014, 89015, and 89074, 89075...and i think green valley is 89012, but if not, then also anythiing in green valley.

here are some links Concordia Homes (http://www.concordiahomes.com/find.asp), and also KB Homes (http://www.kbhome.com/Map~RegionID~12.aspx)

http://www.newhomesource.com/ is a good place to get started.

hope that helps.

i am buying a new home(well my parents are) at the villas at black mountain, and so will have my house up for sale soon. Also, i have another classmate that will be selling his condo soon too.

if you were interested in my house or the condo, just shoot me a PM, and i will get that info for you.

otherwise, happy house hunting! :D

(this website is largely still under construction by the student gov, so this is pretty much all that is there at present, we'll be adding more in the future)

Lots of people from our class live in Remmington, Timberlake, and Ventana Canyon.

I live in Remmington and pay $750 month for a single and I think its $890 for a double. I can walk to school. :)

I chose HPN (Health Plan of Nevada) but I regret it. I think it is the cheapest out there, but for only a few bucks more, you could go with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. BCBS offers you much more of a selection of doctors to go to, and you are covered nationally (which is big for me, because I can be covered when I go home to St. Louis on break). That is why I will switch to BCBS over the summer. Hope this Helps

Yeah, I have Anthem/BCBS and although the rates may be slightly higher, I think they are more comprehensive. It's better to be safe than sorry. I had BCBS back in Chicago and was happy with them.

You may also want to look into SOMA health insurance as well.

Hello entering class of 2010!
I recently decided to go to Touro-NV and am happy to see that Chris started this 'thread'! I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and can't wait to share the wonderful/stressful med school experience with you. Thank you Chris and everyone who takes time from their busy schedule to give us information on housing and other advice.
I was wondering if any of you have advice on the following: I want to be as prepared as possible for the upcoming year, and was thinking about taking a summer course to make Year 1 a little easier. I'm considering biochemistry, anatomy, pathophysiology, microbiology, or medical terminology. If anyone has time to rank these courses in terms of which are most helpful, it would be greatly appreciated!

See you soon,
Brent

.....one more quick question. Does anyone have any 'insider' info on the wall thickness of local apartment complexes? I'm a hypocrite and play guitar loud but want quiet when I need it. BTW, DrB - that apartment looks nice....is it a good building?

Kubed

Hey guys, on the subject of apartments there’s a good list further up on this page, and it’s got most of the apartments right around school listed. One that isn’t listed is the one I’m at. Allego apartments are nice, clean, quiet, gated and a one bedroom is around $800. The management is fantastic and I really like it. I’ll probably live here next year. Feel free to PM me if you’ve got questions.

As for wall thickness… I’ve got no idea. I never hear my neighbors, but I don’t know if that’s because they’re really quiet or the walls are thick. If you plan on being loud, you might want to take a pass on an apartment or a condo and just look into renting a house. You should be able to find something pretty reasonable right around school. I’ve got some buddies who just rented a three bedroom house for about $1300 a month. You can find one more or less for depending on what you want.

As for taking classes this summer… eh… you’re going to get mixed responses to that. There are some people who will absolutely tell you that must take classes and study your ass off before school starts. Remember people are going to advise you to study what ever they them selves didn’t do well in, so take all the advice with a grain of salt. Some people might actually benefit from cramming all summer, but I suspect that they’re in the minority. If you feel like it will help to take a summer class, out of your list I would say biochem would be the most beneficial to take if you’ve never had it. There’s no way you can successfully study for anatomy until you experience it, med school style. We get an intro to micro in the spring of first year, so you probably won’t remember it by the time that class rolls around. Pathophysiology isn’t until 2nd year, so don’t even bother with that one. Human physiology on the other hand, would not be a bad class to take. But really, you’re going to learn it all a system at a time first year.

Me…. I’m inclined to say just relax, enjoy your summer, and panic about school starting (no reason to panic… everyone will tell you not to panic and stress… but you’re going to anyway, and that’s ok ;) ) Just relax as much as you can, hang out with your current friends, meet your new ones, and enjoy this summer. You’ll have more then enough work to do in just a few months.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I’m more than happy to answer them.

First off, thank you again Kubed! Sounds like biochem is considered by most to be the best course to get out of the way? Unfortunately...I can't seem to find a school out here that offers it (I'm taking care of my mom in Cincinnati for the summer, but am from LA). I have been able to find some anatomy courses, so I'll check those out further to see what level they are. I guess I'm just intimidated by the first year curriculum - 6 med school level courses the first semester seems pretty intense!
Good info on the housing too...thank you. :)

Does anybody have health insurance through SOMA or AMSA? After checking and comparing policies, I think the best route for my wife and I would be through AMSA, but I wanna check and see if anyone has it that could give me some insight.

Thanks

I can only speak of Timberlakes Apartments, for which I am moving out because they are raising my rent (for a one bed) to 895/month if I do month to month (it is a bit less if I sign a new lease). It is a nice place and the staff is "sorta friendly" (don't be fooled they are all sales people). They have yoga class 2x a week (but I don't go any more) and nice spacious apartments. I do hear my upstairs neighbors, but not the ones next to me... Keep in mind that Kubed is on the top floor, so if you want quiet try to rent one (but also keep in mind the heat in the summer). Also the Timberlakes has a lot of skate borders, kids and people with loud music. They don't have gates or speed bumps so you get speeders and door-to-door solicitors.

PM me with questions...

I want to elaborate on what Kubed said regarding taking classes before coming to school. I am one of those people (and I'm sure there are some of you out there) who was not a science major and who took the minimum necessary to be accepted. I do feel like it would have been nice to have had those classes before, but ABSOLUTELY not necessary. The amount of time you put in, is the result you will get. I have to work hard, but it's doable, and I have never seen any of this before.

My recommendation: Forget about school for the next 4 months! Go out, hang out, do whatever it is you like to do. Whatever you can cram in a summer will not be beneficial enough come September/October when you don't ever want to study again (and that's just one block's worth). Let your brain breathe now (thats some serious medical jargon :) ), because it will not have time to until next summer.

BUT...if you feel the need to take something this summer...nothing else will be beneficial except for biochemistry. It doesn't even matter where...if you go to the local community college and take a BS biochem course that's fine. At least you will have the basics.

And as Kubed said...we were all anxious and worried we wouldn't be able to handle the curriculum, but we have and you will, and the OMSII's will be there to guide you. PM me as well if you have any questions, Kubed is too busy cleaning his "nice, clean, quiet, gated one bedroom apartment."

Wow, you guys are awesome. How you find time to give these answers is beyond me, but it is EXTREMELY helpful. I'll try to do the same for the next entering class, but this is a hard act to follow...
So yeah, biochem huh? That sure is a notorious class! Maybe I can find like a popup book or something this summer - you know, something with a lot of pictures!

Also, how do students living in houses with other students seem to do compared with students living alone in apt's? Any sig. difference there?

Thanks!

stretch and kubed speak the truth (although you should be weary to trust them any more than this! :p ) i also was a nonscience major and the only thing i wish i would have known was to get familiar with biochem. and, like they said...don't worry, all of us current OMSI (almost OMSII...so close!) will be here to help. our class is taking pretty active steps to make sure our the OMSI and OMSII students are meshed pretty well.

but until school starts, i think you should ENJOY HAVING A LIFE...cuz it all goes away pretty fast. :D

Class of 2009 had many events planned in the summer before...

We first met up in Vegas in April in a "mini class trip" where we had a few parties and even a tour of the school (parts were still being built). Here is the agenda for our April Trip:

Friday April 1

Spice Market Buffet: “voted # 1 Buffet in Las Vegas”
**Meet at front of buffet at 6pm
Location: Aladdin Resort and Casino
3667 Las Vegas Blvd S.
Las Vegas, NV 89109

Party on the Strip: try your luck at one of the casinos on the strip, who knows maybe you will win enough to pay for medical school… or at least have a good time trying.
Location: as far as your feet will take you

Saturday April 2

Las Vegas/Henderson city tour
Travel with students to see apartments and housing

Touro University Tour: Visit the campus; meet with Roger Corbman and students from the class of 2008
**Meet at the school at 4pm
Location: 874 American Pacific Drive
Henderson, NV 89014

Potluck BBQ Banquet: Join us at Our Classmate's house for a little meal after the tour
Location: TBA

Club Pure: enjoy Las Vegas nightlife with this 36,000 square foot nightclub located inside Caesars Palace. House, re-mix, rock and Hip-Hop. RSVP required for VIP.
Location: Inside Caesars Palace
3570 S. Las Vegas Blvd
Las Vegas, NV 89109

Sunday April 3
***Daylight Savings, don’t forget to “spring forward”***

Brunch: TBA

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area: Explore the serenity of the Mojave Desert with a walk into the park. Bring water and hiking shoes. Time TBA
Location: West on Charleston Blvd (25min from strip)
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

We stayed in touch via email and a google list serve (I hear that you are using ezboard this year... that’s good because it is similar to the format you will be using next year for all your classes).

Then... the week before orientation... we planned an outing every day, starting a legacy of pre-parties that I would love to see Class of 2010 beat. I don't have the agenda for that week; maybe my classmates can help my memory...

I remember that we had a few BBQ parties, we rented a boat and one of our classmates had a speed boat so we spent the day on Lake Mead...

Point is, use your imagination... have fun... and even if you don't remember it... pretend like you will forever!

Hmm....that does sound tough to top, but I sure wouldn't mind trying  ! How do we get on the EZboard? Is that the best way to reach most of the 10'ers? If anyone is going to be in Vegas in July, we should try to set up some events throughout the month.

I don't live there, so I guess I couldn't give you the most insightful opinion of them, but I don't think they are that bad. The best way is to see the apartments for youself. Make a list of places, take a few days to come to Vegas and tour each one. Don't forget your digi cam to share your findings with your future classmates.

I think Class of 2010 has a ezboard site for you to meet each other. Get on that site as soon as you can, maybe you can share your findings about each apartment complex. You can share more personal info about yourself than you can on SDN.

Can someone from Class of 2010 help bblue out?

Good luck!

Hey Travis,

Sorry about that...that was the first comment I read on apartmentratings.com. I read on, and that website is bunk. It does sound like a good deal and my dealings with them have been great so far (I contacted them by phone).
Also, I contacted villaserena and they're converting to condos but said they are still renting apartments in 3-6 month leases. Does anyone know if that means after that time, you'd need to find a new place?

Yep. I had forgotten to mention that. A lot of the apartments around Vegas get converted into condos. Make sure you ask about this when you are thinking about renting from someplace.

I have also noticed lots of condos in the area. I was hoping to buy right away, but have come to realize it would be to my benefit to get familiar with the area first. So, I think I'm going to live close to campus for a while and take advantage of being able to walk to school. :)

Do any current students know if Touro-NV has some of the same relationships (if any) with clinical rotation sites as Touro-MI? I was wondering because I'm from CA, and it would be great to do some of the non-core rotations in CA. Touro-MI has a good match list, I'm hoping Touro-NV will be similar.

for your non-core rotations, you pick the hospital, and set it up yourself, and then get it approved by the dean. so, i don't know that we have any special relationship with MI's hospitals, but if you call them to set up a rotation, since they are already familiar with the school, it shouldn't be too hard to make it work.

the rotations for the 2nd yrs are already set i believe. it is harder to get elective rotations as a 3rd yr, b/c teaching hospitals are affiliated with med schools. so, they don't like to take other school's 3rd yr students as well. but from what i know, no one so far has had huge issues getting the elective they wanted, where they wanted. thats just what i think though, i may not be totally right.

your best bet on this sort of info would be from Box29. he knows all about that stuff.

Our requests for away rotations were due by May 1st. We are allowed to make 2 changes just in case. In terms of programs being receptive, it depends on the program or physician or medical group. I approached a hospital in Chicago whose policy generally restricts rotating medical students to those of Chicago area medical schools only. I explained my situation and was granted an exception by the program director (thankfully). For the most part, your best bet would be to contact the program through which you are interested in rotating.

In terms of 3 yr rotations, they have already been scheduled for us...probably since late feb or march. Everything is going well and I think most people were given what they requested in the lottery in terms of rotational sites and vacation block.

Gotta get back to studying!

It's good to hear that the rotation scheduling has been favorable for you guys and that away rotations are doable...where there's a will there's a way, right? Looking forward to more of our upperclassmen's advice as we progress through medschool. Thanks for taking the time & good luck with your studies.

def attending tu-nv.

I'm wondering what the 08ers thought about the boards (comlex & usmle).
What courses you thought helped you more and where you'd allocate your time if you could start from MS-I again.

Hey hey! Now that we’ve had a chance to sober up a little bit, you’ll probably see some responses.http://webforum.mweb.co.za/images/graemlins/alc.gif The tests we had last week were… uh… let’s just go with “intense.” You guys will see when you have your first block exams in September. There’s really no way to describe it, it’s just something you have to experience for yourself. Don’t worry though, we’ll be here to help you through it, and you’ll survive. Anyway, make sure you’re enjoying this summer. Feel free to post any questions you guys have here and we’ll do our best to answer them

1. Don't buy a house or condo right away. If you are single or married without children, first look for a house/apartment to share. It will cost less, and you will learn about the area, and get a better idea of the housing market out here.

2. If you don't have a clue about physiology, histology, and biochemistry go to the book store and look up Lippincott's Illustrated Series books on Biochem, Physiology, etc. I would also recommend getting a USMLE 1 book review (this will come in handy, and it is recommended that you review these books along with the material you will be learning in class).

3. Make sure you get settled before Orientation. Some students stayed at hotels/motels until they could find a place to stay. Thus, plan ahead, and weigh all your options when it comes to room and board, etc.

4. Look into scholarship programs now, call financial aid for assistance.

5. And keep asking lots of questions!

Ask and you shall receive..haha! I was wondering what you guys think about Kaplan's Qbank...I hear it's about $33/month, and it can be really helpful in preparing for tests and the boards later. Is it something worth purchasing and using for the first few months of school or is it better used later on in the first year and second year (assuming it's worth it at all)?

Thank you and congratulations again on finishing finals and your first year!

Hey guys,

I have been checking on this thread since I interviewed. I just got a call from Roger yesterday...I will be joining the class this fall.

I, like everyone else, will be looking for a place to live. I want to buy a house but do not know much about house buying. I will be going to Vegas this next weekend to look for a place.

Later,

Matt.

Don't pay for Qbank, the school will hook you up with USMLE/COMLEX format questions on their computer system, that is analogous to the Kaplan Qbank. Save your money.

Thanks for the heads up. Is Touro one of the few schools that offer the USMLE/COMLEX format Q's? I've heard from students at other schools that Qbank was a necessity...but am not sure if their schools had the USMLE/COMLEX Q's.
Any recommendations on what you would do if you were starting first year again?

Many thanks again!

Hey guys- I haven't posted at all here b/c I've been a little busy this year, but there is lots of advice coming your way- on our bulletin board, my classmates are compiling advice for you from our class. Many people will be able to give you advice about school once you get here.
My biggest suggestion for the moment- relax. Enjoy your summer, and don't worry. Find a house/apartment/condo by coming in to town and looking around (I found it difficult to do from Oregon- I ended up flying in for a weekend, and it was much easier). As for health insurance- I will be using SOMA next year. The insurance I had last year (Fortis) was expensive and didn't work very well when I actually need something. Also, there is a 'bookstore' of sorts that you can use once you get here (on the school's website, www.tourobooks.com) to buy your school books, and unless you get your books used you will save money by waiting.
When you get here- budget your time well. Study when you have the time, but spend some time with your friends and family too. They will miss you and need you around, and trust me, you will need them too. Also- get to know your professors. They can be your greatest ally.
We are so excited to have you here, and we will do our best to support you (we know how difficult the first few months can be).

bblue,
I think there are many schools that will invest in different Board exam question programs.
Apropos, they do have Kaplan come by and talk to you about their Qbank. Our library has plenty of resources, and also has some copies of Kaplan's new book on the USMLE/COMLEX.

I am actually very happy with what I did. I planed in advance, found an apartment near the school, looked around and learned more about the community, where to shop, etc. I also became familiar early on with students, professors, etc. I also bought my books in advance.

Just an FYI on the "bookstore" if you are at all interested in buying books... SOMA bookstore offers anywhere from 8% - 15% off your books whereas Touro Bookstore only offers 5% even though they both use Matthew's Books as a distributor.

Here's the link:

http://webmedbooks.com/soma/default.aspx

PS...don't pick any school in the drop down menu on the left hand side of the screen. Pick your books first and then at check out, choose the school.

Or if you are a member of B&N.com or borders.com, go there since shipping will be cheaper and probably the prices too by several dollars. Anyhoo, the shipping for Touro books and SOMA bookstore can get pretty outrageous.

How many "blocks" are there in a semester? I'm figuring that I'll get to relax after the end of each block...I hope...

I managed to get a hold of Lipencott's Biochem review from a friend and I already took biochem and I'm looking at this thing going  ...we maybe covered 10% of that book in my biochem class...that scared me a bit. Still..for sanity sake I promised to stop looking at it come late june.

Is anyone sure of books they'll def re-use for next year? Is Gray's Anatomy for students a def keeper?

Thanks tons! :)
1. I just ordered First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 : 2006. My roommate has it, so I have looked through it, and it looks PERFECT for my style of learning (visual, clear and concise)

2. I'm sure Box will jump all over this one

3. 3 blocks/ semester (6 blocks/year)

4. Lippincott has some good books, and Biochem is definitely a tough and important subject, so this would definitely be a nice book to have. My recommendation is to enjoy your summer until, like you said, about a month before school starts. Then read that book about an hour a day to get your mind in gear and ready for the start of school. Also, be sure to spend some quality time with your family/friends/significant other because come August, things will not be the same.

5. I liked Grays a lot, but I heard a rumor that Dr Ma might make a change for next year.

Medical school is definitely a unique experience. A lot of you will come in thinking, I graduated near the top of my class, and I expect to do really well in Med school. Well, not everyone is going to be in the top of their class in medical school, so it will take some time to get used to the fact that you are in the middle or bottom of your class. From the words of MTV Diaries...You may think you know, but you have no idea. You will be shocked at first, but you will adapt and get somewhat use to the rigors of medical school. I know I had to tell myself "everything will be ok, everything will work out in the end" about 20 times a day for the first month. And you know what, it did (atleast, so far). I was just freakin out. Oh, and there is a lot to look forward to...meeting your classmates, the week before school (should be a lot of fun!), White Coat Ceremony, end of first block, last block, and the blocks in between celebrations, working with your first cadaver, cracking your first neck, finding the low ilium flare out tender point ;) jk, Las Vegas...etc. Just stay positive and enjoy the journey (I know, really corny) Anyway, hope that helps. Can't wait to meet you guys. :)

Which usmle review books are good?

For 1st year, I would get First Aid for the USMLE and go through the pertinent sections as you cover them in BSF. Annotate the crap out it for the physio, anatomy, histo sections of the systems you are covering at that time. When you are in Biochem, write down the nitty gritty. Remember that First Aid is just a basic skeleton outline of some high yield material but you need to take notes in the margins so that when you need to review come the end of second year, all the notes are there...It saves a lot of time.

Currently, First Aid for the USMLE is in its 2006 version. The 2007 version will come out in December 2006 or Jan 2007. Personally, I would wait till the 2007 version comes out since when you all take your boards, the 2008 version will be out. It's up to you but I would hold off till the newer version comes out.

Additionally, you may perhaps want to get the Board Review Series (BRS) book for physiology.

Where will clinical rotations be?

In the Las Vegas/Henderson area...for the class of 2008, there were 3 sites that were available for us to rank in terms of preference:

1. UMC/Valley (which has multiple hospital sites including the VA, Mountain View, Desert Springs, Spring Mountain, Freemont, Nevada Health Centers, Inc., Southwest Medical, and Summerlin)

2. Sunrise Hospital

3. St. Rose Hospital ( Sienna Campus 89052 or de Lima campus 89015)

The administration just got word that Nellis Air Force Base Hospital will also be taking students...(For the class fo 2008, 16 students will be chosen randomly to rotate there).

Will we have a choice?

The only choices you have to make are your preference of rotation site, electives, and your preference for vacation block. Just because you prefer it doesn't mean you will necessarily get it...It's a lottery, just like any other med school that prepares the students' clerkship rotations. You deal with what you get.

Any international options?

This is currently being worked on by several students and the administration.

How many "blocks" are there in a semester?

3 blocks per semester and the 2nd block is usually the shortest! Work hard and MANAGE your time WELL!

Is anyone sure of books they'll def re-use for next year?
Is Gray's Anatomy for students a def keeper?

Your anatomy book is definitely a keeper IMHO...it's good to look up stuff and use as a reference for boards.

Good luck in the fall!

well, there are tons of us with not much to do anymore...so ask away! :D

oh, also, the board review series is good for school. the physiology BRS book (by linda something(i think her last name starts with a c), if you type in board review series into amazon, its a blue book with a graph paper printed like cover) was super helpful for BSF, and also is one that you will be studying out of for the boards, so well worth the investment now (its only like $35 anyways). also, like cardio said, the USMLE first aid book is notorious too.

enjoy your summer! :D

HPN was cheaper than SOMA for me with Dental and Vision. I have used it in the past few weeks and didn't have any problems. I have had experience with a PPO in the past as well as with Kaiser, but did not experience anything different. HPN people are very difficult to get ahold of on the phone. I like the 24hr advice nurse, they have helped me out a few times. They are also raising my premiums this year by some 4% but it is still cheaper than SOMA. Over all, I am sticking with it.

-Good luck

HPN is a great plan (no deductible, 0% coinsurance, very low monthly premium, etc.) but there are two big drawbacks for me. They are not national and they're and HMO. Here is a site that I have been using to find my health insurance:

https://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ehi/Welcome.ds?ehi.action=changeCensus&mcei.app.terminalID=__tid__2_

I think I am going to go with BCBS- Anthem Blue High Deductible (HSA Compatible) Plan (a PPO). It's actually $5 cheaper/mo. The only drawbacks compared to HPN are the $2,600 deductible and 20% coinsurance.

I still have to check out SOMA though

Hope this helps

Summer… what’s summer? I started doing the research thing the Monday after blocks. Doing some sweet, sweet rads and cancer genetics research. I’m in it for the papers, but it’s got some nice perks. I spent 6 hours today reading and dictating MRI’s.

I have my health insurance though Teachers Plan. It’s only available to full time employees of Clark County School district and their families. You don’t actually have to be married to get it. I’m my girlfriend’s “domestic partner.” If you can get it, it’s the best I’ve found.

I don't seem too convinced by looking at an areal view of the school. There's roughly 150 spots in the front. I don't see room for 300 more spots in the sides and back. Go to google locals and look at a hybrid overview/areal....do the math...it's not even close.

Ah, I see what you’re saying. I pulled up the google earth map of the school and it’s an old one. All of the trailers have been moved from our part of the building, and the back has been restriped for cars. Odds are parking will be kind of exciting for the first few weeks (it certainly was when we showed up) but after everyone gets settled in, it won’t be a problem. Same goes for the study rooms, tables, chairs, couches …etc. At first it will seem like there just aren’t enough, but after people figure out which classes they want to attend and which one’s they don’t and where they want to study and where they don’t, life will be much calmer.

Oh, and don’t worry about stressing the little things. It’s the last summer that you really get to. Case and point, I’m pretty sure my lease for my apartment is up in the next few weeks, and I haven’t even started looking at new places. Am I worried? …naaaaaaa. I’m going on vacation.

plus, maybe you aren't factoring in that the 08-ers will be gone, so between your class and 08s class, the difference is ~55 spots. maybe you should wait to get here before you start getting concerned...that way you can see how much of a non-issue parking is...

also, why would touro need 300 more spots?

We won't be gone... :p You'll see us when we come back for OMM call backs and to take our post-rotational exams/shelf exams...You can't get rid of us that easily!!! We won't be gone until graduation.

WHAT?!?!?! .... Box, this was not part of our agreement. http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiley_aayp.gif
I don't know if the school can take having MS-3's around. It might make us actually look like a real live med school

mmmwwwwwuuuuhaaahaaahaa! Just when you thought it was over! Actually, we're getting secret tuition reimbursements from administration to torture you guys and make parking even more difficult! Maybe well take up ALL the parking and put flyers on all the other cars (j/K)... :p ;)

Just for that, I just got of the phone with Dean Forman, and sorry to say it, but you guys (08ers) have to park on Gibson now. :( Oh and you will have to recycle :p ;)

Actually, Dean Forman must have misplaced the memo from Dr. Bernard Lander, the Founder and President of Touro College, that gave the class of 2008, full reign of the school + dibs on the new secret underground air-conditioned garage parking with proxi card access...oh I forgot the valet service and care detailing :p

CS was taught by a gazillion of docs, including Dr. Silvers, from the area for us...and a multitude of notes that didn't necessarily correlate with our text.

Dr. Kalekas and Dr. Mac will definitely give you guys a great course. I'm sure they'll be harder on you guys since they know you already and this will be the meat of introducing basic science to clinical science...Anyways, you'll be better off.

So, my adviser left AND second year just got harder...GREAT!

Don't worry, me and Kubed will take care of the valet and car detailing

Who was your advisor? Silvers?

Who was your advisor? Silvers?
Yep :( I wonder how that is going to affect LORs and the Dean's Letter?

box29
06-02-2006, 01:31 AM
It won't...you'll be assigned another advisor. My advisor left after 1st semester 1st year and I was assigned another.

As for the Dean's letter, I know for sure that your clinical evals (from 3rd and 4th year) will play a big part in it. Don't sweat it...

Oh, btw, I prefer Zymol, Lexol, and Meguiar's products for my leather interior surfaces. Anything other than that must be approved by administration. :D

Ummm, I don't think so...perhaps you should look up the chemical structures and note their MOAs...I would think they're more like Nystatin, who knows...

are you sure your not a sniper instead of a gunner?

Cardio, but down the pharm list. Some of us aren't going to learn it until the night before blocks, and you're making us look bad. Box, this dosen't look like studying to me....And isn't this the '10 thread? http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.sml.gif

Nice. I can get tuition from google earth now.

Good, I'm a little relieved.

Thanks for the update Kubed, that put me to ease.

I withdrew from a certain DO school and I've had jitters since then. :( [I wish I had a twin!]

I was concerned earlier because I figured 135 in our class, maybe 100 prev class, 100 total PA students maybe, 100 from nursing, education, occ therapy, etc, plus eh maybe 30 staff/fac/adm on a given day...that's around 450 spots (not counting the 08ers) and I only saw (as per the old map) 150 spots in the front. But you got the back too then that helps. Kubed's input sounds reasonable to me.

Good point though. I'll be careful not to call certain shots before hand. [I'll take back/edit my previous comments if I find that it isn't a problem.]

Thanks for the input.

I'm happy for now.

Hehehe, there is not at all that many nursing, OT, and education students. I don't think they'll have even that many combined for the fall. Don't worry, it'll all be fine and dandy.

P.s. Just watch out for Kubed...he can get a little crazy...did you see X-men? He's in it... ;) (j/K0

Green Valley Ranch pool for Memorial Day was AWESOME! Me and some classmates sitting in the sun for 5 hours, drinking cocktails in perfect weather with a bunch of beautiful tourists all around us...Not bad! This is before we had a BBQ at Remington (also fun). You guys should definitely google Green Valley Ranch. When you get free time...this will be one of the places you will most likely spend your time. Well, just woke up for the day...have to go take a shower...MAN I LOVE SUMMER!

uhm, YOU 09ers may have (maybe 08 too)... they are just going to have to learn to deal with me since I will be in the class with them :p  ok, maybe not. but i imagine most are busy with trips here and there, preparing to move and spending time with family and friends and doing whatever it is that they do.

I really hope they aren't studying... that would be... well.. gunner-ish. ;)

well, box knows i was teasing him... worried or not.... and he is always allowed to give me a bad time...

To see you! :D No...I decided to go the apartment route the first year and so I'm going to check out the ones on the Touro website. I'm on my way back to Los Angeles (from Cincinnati) for a few weeks before moving to Vegas, so I'm going to spend a couple of days in Vegas looking for apartments.

i think that might be the weekend after exams...so you should be free. they only have a tentative schedule done right now...and who knows when the official one will be done. i know they have been working on it this week...so hopefully soon. but it should be the weekend after your blocks.
