fellow 4th years are you getting sick of not getting to sign orders and scrips in the hospitals? I definitely am and that's a sign that it is time to move on. Today the nurses asked me about putting a PICC line in a patient that was a hard stick otherwise and had no other contraindications to this. Of course, I couldn't sign the order and had to track down an intern to do it. I understand the legal reasons why we can't sign orders and stuff but am really ready for this part to be over. Anyone else starting to chafe at these restrictions! Oh well, 7 more months to go.

I think that its rather expensive to place a PICC. I say blow all the veins trying to get a peripheral IV in before you move on.

Todays episode:
Nurse: "Doctor, this pt that you wrote the d/c orders for, and Rx's for needs a signature, and DEA# b4 she can take the Rx's."
Me: "I spoke to Dr. xxx, and asked him to sign off on them, can you call him to sign off?"
Nurse: "Well, why cant you just sign it?"
Me: " I'm still a medical student, and can't legally sign."
Nurse: "Well, that's stupid. You did everything for the pt, and all Dr. x did was look at her for a sec."
Me: "Well, that's the way it goes"
I go behind another curtain to see another consult
Pt: (as I'm interviewing another pt) " Hey doc, can you just gimme the scripts... I really gotta go"
Me: "I'll see you in a moment, I'm with another Pt."
Pt: "But doc, all I need is a signature."
Me: "I know, and I'm with another person who needs my attention right now" (picture another pt gasping for air (suspect PE) watching all of this)
Pt: "Man, thas' sum bullfu c k! I been here all this damn time, and y'all muthafu c k a s can't just gimme a god damn signature! Fu C K dis, I'm out dis muthaf u cka"
Signed out AMA after being there all night, and me wasting my time ordering labs/films/following up.

Yeah, it's a little annoying. But I'm more looking forward to getting a paycheck.
