I hope age is merely a number that determines quality because I turned 28 today April 11th, so I will be 28 when I start this fall either at SCO or UMSL. Does anyone have any helpful hints???
swiftiii 04-24-2006, 08:34 PM Gosh, I have never been the oldest. I'll be 27 when I start. The only thing that makes me feel less of a fart is that I have my MBA done. A lot of good it will do after four years in optom school, though...lol!
aarlan 04-25-2006, 02:35 PM Don't worry, you're not the oldest...look back on the thread and you'll feel better.

No, I know not the oldest. Just one of. It'll be weird. I am just used to being young, that I forget time doesn't care

I'll be 37 when I start at UMSL in August. Therefore, if you go to UMSL, you won't be the oldest in the class, if that makes you feel any better
(I wouldn't suggest picking an optometry school based on the fact that you wouldn't be the oldest in the class...)

Haha, age and quality. I shall have to remember that! I don't think age is much of a factor. In fact being older, you'll have more life experience and maturity. Have you been out of school long? That was my bigger concern. The last science class I took was Anatomy back in Spring 02!! Anyway, during my interview by some of the 2d years, I asked them if they thought it would be a big deal and what I could do to prepare. It turned out that all three had also been away for various numbers of years (one had 7...) and were doing very well in their courses. At Nova, at least, everything you learned in undergrad is fully taught again, and if you do need help, there is plenty available. I am sure that it will be the same at whatever school you go to as well.
idoc2b 04-27-2006, 12:56 PM swiftiii, i just turned 27 too and i'm interviewing at nsu next week. we're not old yet :) i know what you mean a little bit about not wanting to be one of the older students. but there's definitely some advantages to having a little more life experience. maybe i'll see you at nsu next year...

I have been out of school for about 3 years now, but have tried to keep sharp by taking biochemistry, A&P II, and statistics. I have also been teaching chemistry and physics in high school so it's kinda like I have never left.

LOL, guess we'll post my previous reply under "worthless hints." ;) You know, I could use a tutor....
smith351 05-01-2006, 08:25 PM I was curious, does the admissions commitee prefer older students because they think that they are more mature and have more life experiences? I'm 25, but i don't feel mature or have any more life experiences than anyone else. I will be 26 when I go in entering class 07 (hopefully).

As someone who applied first when they were 23 and then again at 27, I didn't feel it made a difference. HOWEVER, and maybe I am contradicting myself, I think it can make a difference in how you interview. Maturity is typically consistent with age (i.e. the older you are, the more mature you tend to be), which definitely works in an older applicant's favor.
I am also trying to think. Why are you applying at 26? Have you taken time off since graduating? Or did you do something before college? If so, then you do have more experience, even if you don't believe so. Think about it, and work it to your advantage.
Perhaps commitees automatically assume that you would be more mature and have more experiences just because you are older. But I think it's more in their subconcious, and unless you can show them your "older" age, then it really won't make a difference. Just my experience.... ;)
