View Full Version : To Finish or Not to Finish
doc4u 11-11-2005, 09:42 AM As I have posted here prior, I am a grad student although I want out.
My degree will be MS (Information technology MGT.) from harvard university.
I have about 6 classes left until I am done. Some people (docs) are telling me to finish and do my big 4 pre med classes, and others are saying just focus on you post-bacc work.
Do you all have any advice? I really do not like my grad work, although I am doing well. From what I hear they do not even take my gpa from grad school into consideration, only how well i do on in post-bacc. I think if I have to do both, I may spread myself to thin, with family (wife, 2 year old, and newborn due Jan2nd).
Any advice on how this may be seen if I back out of grad school would be a great help. I am sure I am not the only one who changes his/her mind about their track in life.
Hope to hear from you all soon.
Regards,
MDF

I just finished my MHS is biomedical science and I was in a similar position of deciding whether or not to get out early to start my post bacc. However I was told by various med school advisors and doctors that I worked with that it was looked down upon to just drop your graduate program, if you do not have a good reason. So I did finish, and I think for me it was the right choice. If you have only a short time left you might as well finish in my opinion.

Hi,
I'm in a similiar situation. I am about 1.5 yrs from finishing my Ph.D. in engineering. I also told that it would look bad to just drop out of a grad. program without a good reason. Besides, having a grad. degree shows a certain level of maturity and can only help, as it is another academic accomplishment. Also, from my research I have found that many schools (especially research driven programs) will consider your grad. experience. It's something that makes you stand out and they won't totally ignore it. It seems they look at the whole package and an advance degree can only help you.
Good Luck

Right. Also, if medicine does not work out for any reason, you have your graduate degree!

Thanks everyone, I just talked to a premed advisor at Yale and he told me the same thing, stick with the grad degree. I have 6 total classes left. Even if I do 3 in the Spring, 1 in the summer, and start post-bacc in the Fall. When I apply to med school I can at least list the my degree is pending and will be complete prior to starting their med school.
I agree that it does look better, I guess I have to bite the bullet and finish. It is hard to do because I have such a lack of interest.
