I think I'm getting a Toshiba for $850 at bestbuy. Hey, are you gonna spend the money on the additional warranty? I'm still trying to decide about that one. I heard the tech support at WVSOM is not that good, and I'm not the best with fixing computers....but I'm still cheap.
tsdesai 04-18-2006, 12:28 PM I have IBM R40 but the thing is so heavy. I am considering buying another one but this one has everything required by WVSOM.
Duchess 04-18-2006, 01:02 PM Hello fellow white water rafters!!! Here's the deal, I have been several times and have gone with several outfitters and USA Raft has the best rates. Their web site is http://www.usaraft.com
I am thinking we should shoot for either the lower New River or the middle or lower Gauley River. Depending on how many people want to come, we may get a $5-10.00 discount. The cost ranges from $60-70 for a Saturday trip and $45-60 for a Sunday-Friday trip. Trips range from 4-6 hours, which will be decent since we will doing a lot of paddeling and getting soaked!
The Gauley trips may book up fast, especially if we do a weekend trip, but the new River stays pretty open. So if people can let me know which trip you all want to do and which day of the week would be best I can e-mail USA raft and reserve our spot. I am thinking either the second of third week of July, but everyone let me know what you think and don't forget to check out the website!!!
Sorry I know this post was from awhile ago but I've been crazy busy and haven't found much time to be on SDN. Count me in! But I'd prefer a weekday, and most likely towards the end of July since I'll be moving to Lewisburg mid-July (probably some other people will be doing the same). How many people do we have so far?
Come on guys, it'll be a great experience! And a chance to unwind before we have to start harcore-studying.
DrBMX 04-18-2006, 01:15 PM guys,
I probably come down there, stills wait for more school. However, my close friend is debating b/w WVSOM and SGU? (he get accepted last Fri). He told me that both schools are very expensive ( 300k vs 240k) but have similar match results. Plus an MD for SGU. I'm not trying to convince him b/c this is a personal matter. What you do think about this? I'll pass this thread to him.
Thanks

If he has his heart set on a MD, go to SGU. If he doesn't care what title is behind his name but only wants to be a physician, stay in the states and come to WVSOM. Thats all I can advise your friend on this matter.

there is absolutely no question that any US school, whether it be DO or MD, is far better than SGU. and i find it hard to believe that SGU's match list is similar. i have a friend that is there right now and she says that she has made the wrond decision in going there and is really not that happy at all. you have to remember that if you go to SGU you will be living in a third world country. she sent me some pictures of the campus and the surrounding area, watch out for the cows when you go grocery shopping. i will post the pictures later.
Megalofyia 04-19-2006, 05:17 AM From what I understand SGU's match list is kind of artificial because you cant move on to the next level until the school knows you will make it on. So if the school doesnt' think your ready for step 1 you dont take it, and so on. This means only the better students keep moving forward so by the time you get to the end the filter effect has ensured that those students will have the grades and scores to match.
jclark3 04-19-2006, 11:40 AM so...this is the first time i've posted on this thread....
looking forward to meeting everyone in the fall :)
quick question: i've noticed this last semester that my grades (and my brain functioning!!) have kinda gone downhill. i am suffering from what some might call a bad case of senior-itis--and it is apparent in my GPA. SO...my question is whether or not WVSOM could do anything about it since i've already been accepted and sent in my deposits. could they tell me i can't come in august, based solely on my grades this spring??
RD330 04-19-2006, 12:22 PM so...where is everyone from? I'm from Dallas, Texas. The weather change is going to be tough...I'm not even sure i know what snow is! :p

i highly doubt it, but i guess anything is possible when it comes to the medical school admissions game. i would think that as long as you dont get any D/F's you will be alright.

I know exactly what you mean about senioritis! Finals are next week and it's so hard to focus and study now that I'm sitting on an acceptance. Undergrad just seems so pointless now that I'm going to go on to med school and be taking classes that will actually help me in my career. Call WVSOM just to make sure, but as long as you don't fail (D/F) I think you'll be fine. But keep in mind (from what I've gathered here on SDN) that when applying for residencies they do see your undergrad GPA (and MCAT score! ) so don't let your grades fall TOO much.
HoosierDoctor 04-20-2006, 02:00 PM Hey Everybody,
I have just discovered this board, and I am glad that I have. Anyways, I'll be attending WVSOM in the Fall and I am currently looking for housing and roomates. Anyone need to fill a bedroom? Now that I have discovered this board I'll be posting very frequently, so I look foward to chatting with y'all.

JohnUC33 04-20-2006, 02:08 PM I just called the financial aide people yesterday, and they told me what kind of loans I qualify for. One loan that I'm not all too familiar with is the Grad Plus loan. The rate is locked at 8.5% with a 3% origination fee. She said this is better than alternative loans because the rate is locked at 8.5%. My questions is that if you get an alternative loan, isn't the rate of the alternative locked at the rate you get approved on for the life of the loan? I'm thinking of seeing what kinda rate I can get with T.H.E. with a cosigner. However, I think I might not be understanding something. Any help on this whole loan understanding process would be greatly appreciated.
HoosierDoctor 04-20-2006, 02:57 PM Not that I would really consier Indianapolis a big city, but here's what I will miss:
1. running on the canal downtown
2. coffee shops
3. good Italian and Mexican food
4. Target and 3 malls within 20 minutes of me
5. my running friends and swimming buddies
6. an imported beer list with more than 2 beers on it.....General Lewis take notes
7. alas, the radio stations!! Does West Virginia know what alternative music is and what "unplugged" means??
Hey wake920 I live in the Indianapolis area too...
Here's my list:
1. swimming: I have yet to find a pool or masters swimming group near Lewisburg
2. Wakeboarding, and the lake
3. My "highschool" and "undergrad" buds
4. Free time (I've got lots of it now)
5. And good old Naptown, USA

I am looking for housing as well, preferably within a few miles of the school. My income will (hopefully) be Army HPSP, so there's stability in that regard. If anybody's interested, let me know:

MUHerd34 04-20-2006, 05:19 PM Hey all........Saw a couple of postings for people looking for roomates. My friend James and I found a 3 bedroom house ($400 month/per person and then split utilities 3 ways). Only problem is we need a third roomate. The house is less than a mile from the school so you could easily bike there or walk if you wanted. Less than a two minute drive(always a plus....since I hate getting up early) Anyone interested just send me a message and Ill try and get back to you with more details as soon as possible...
P.S. Cant wait to meet everyone in the fall!
Later guys,
Brad

Me too! Although, there could be some isolated programs that do as there's one or two Osteopathic schools that ask for your SAT scores. In other words, it's possible but rare, at least I hope so?

well hopefully they wont ask for undergrad grades or i'm screwed. MCAT score i'll gladly disclose.
jclark3 04-21-2006, 12:02 AM oh wow....totally sinking in that school starts in august. kinda scary!! (but exciting nonetheless).
wondering--if anyone would be willing to share--how much you are planning on budgeting for living expenses each month. i found a place for $475 + electricity & internet (probably looking at about $575 each month...maybe more??) and am trying to figure out a round-about figure to budget. the breakdown the school gave us was a bit elevated--i'm not exatly planning on spending $90/mo. on clothing. .....would love to hear what you are thinking :)

I'm renting a sleeping room for $250 a month which includes internet, utilities, cables, etc... Tuition and rent/utilities should be around $50K. Living expenses and books should get me up to the upper $50,000. I plan to stay well below $60K. I don't plan to borrow from private lenders. I'll just borrow from both subsidized and unsubsidized stafford loans.
What school(s) did you guys/gals give up to attend WVSOM?
theresa83 04-21-2006, 10:58 AM did anyone happen to notice or knows whether there is a piano on campus somewhere for anyone to use? i won't be able to bring one with me, for obvious reasons.
labcoord 04-22-2006, 08:14 AM Hi!
I am interested in finding out who will be joining the class of 2010 at WVSOM. I got accepted a month ago and still waiting to hear back from a few schools. I have a gut feeling that I will be going to WVSOM this coming fall. I know the tuition is steep but I am excited for the change in environment, people and lifestyle. Anyways, I just want to have a good idea of who I will be sitting in class with. So gimme a holler! :)
SuperDOgirl
I am going to WVSOM. Waited too long to look for living arrangements and now everything I called on the list they provided (that's reasonable) is rented out.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey whats happening? Congrats on your acceptance. yeah places to live are getting really tight. IF you have not already tell angie to put you on the roommate list /needing a place to stay. Also call a few of the appartment complexes and ask if anyone is looking for a roommate. Some of the appartments complexs have a list of people looking for a person to share with. I know a couple of people found a place to stay this way. Anyways good luck and keep us posted and good luck.

Okay, let me re-emphasize that this was what I had gathered from info on SDN. There was a thread about it in the pre-allo forum...I looked for it but couldn't find it. I'll call WVSOM to be sure, and I'll let you know.
RD330 04-22-2006, 12:23 PM I talked to the financial aid director yesterday and she said that I qualified for the max amount of loans. I'm not going to take the full amount though. She said we should be getting an email from the financial aid office in mid June in order to finalize our loans.

I will call Angie and area apartments on Monday to ask for the roommate lists, etc.

OH and I called WVSOM and they said that it's doubtful that most residencies go as far back as to looking for your undergrad GPA and MCAT in the application process. They're main interest is boards and med school GPA and class ranking. So there ya go....just goes to show you that you can't believe everything you read on SDN.
SK8DOC 04-25-2006, 12:59 PM Hello All,

I too once was a user of facebook, but a certain someone whose name starts with Duch and ends with ess got me addicted to myspace. But honestly, myspace allows you to do so much more than facebook--time is your only limit.

I have a question for you. Do you have any ideas how clinical rotations are scheduled at WVSOM? I talked to the school and it seems like the students are on their own in 4th years. Also, year 3 core rotation requires a lot family medicine, what do you think about this?
Thanks so much
ps: are u vietnamese? it looks like that ;)

I'll answer the clinical rotations. I just got my rotations schedule a couple weeks ago (It rocks). I'm doing statewide campus and they pretty much schedule your 3rd year for ya if you do so. However, if you do traditional rotations, you're on your own putting everything together. Your 4th year is like that also, You are completely on your own. Then again it gives you freedom to pick and choose certain physicians and electives. (Important for getting that elusive match slot!) Ok I'm going to sleep. I have group in the morning!

Well to answer your question... as of 2009 they are only letting us do the statewide rotation program. so your 3rd year is set up by the school (and probably be in WV or hospitals/clinics that are affiliated with WVSOM in some other states) and the 4th year you decide where & which rotations you want. Dr. Foster is the GME coordinator and he is the one that will help you with your rotations. Personally I love him! He's one of the anatomists so you will spend beaucoup time with him your first year.
----> However, there has been so many rumors about how things will change, especially since your class size is twice the size of ours... I do know that statewide will be implemented next year and most likely be the same for yall. If they will give another rotation option is unknown.
and yes, i am vietnamese, but canadian born :)

I've asked around in the past and was told Greyhound stops at Walmart, BUT I have checked and they do not. Maybe it's a different bus company? Anyone know anything about this?
Thanks!
CatsandCradles 04-27-2006, 02:28 PM Hi guys!
I was wondering, can any of you current students at WVSOM tell us what books we might want to start looking for?
It's just that when I was an undergrad, I would buy a book at the book store and it costed me a terrible amount of money
Is it worthwhile that we start looking for books now? And are there any internet book sources that you would recommend us looking into?
Thanks a million :)

Good question. I too would like to know the answer to that. I heard there is a terminology quiz the first week...will any medical terminology book do, or is there a certain one we should get?

Canuck99 04-28-2006, 01:19 PM the class size from 2004 was only about 75. our class size has been increased significantly. how do you guys think this will effect our gross anatomy lab? during my interview they bragged about the student to cadaver ratio. will that low ratio still be possible with the increase in class size? just a thought because i know how much all of us have been dreaming about the day that we finally get a cadaver.

At my interview, back in September 2005, we were informed that they were in the processing of expanding the anatomy lab. There were a lot of constructions going on.

this is true, the construction was going on during my interview as well. so another question to ask is whether or not the expansions will be done come fall. i would just kinda feel shafted if my gross anatomy experience was not what they advertised it to be.
Megalofyia 04-28-2006, 08:25 PM The new lab looks awsome. They are finished with it.
It is my understanding that the school is going to maintain the 4:1 ratio for the cadavers.

If greyhound isn't doing the walmart thing anymore then I dont think you can get to Lewisburg from Charleston without flying, renting a cab, or driving.

Because of the way they are doing your schedule next year it wont be any different. Instead of meeting 3x a week for one semester, your class meets 2x a week for a semester plus some. Tuesday and Thursdays are your lab days and while half the class is doing OPP or physical diag the other half is doing anatomy. Plus they have something like 5 anatomists.. (4 officially) which is more than we have this year. The anatomist at WVSOM rock. They are some of the best teachers I've ever had.

I use amazon.com for my books. The bookstore at the school is actually reasonably priced. I've noticed they cost the same as the books on Amazon but without the shipping charges.
I would suggest not buying anything now but that's because I'm PBL and cheap. I dont know if an SBLer would suggest soemthing differently. The PBLers who study at school tend to share books a lot.
Up until Dec I had only spent 5 dollars total at the book store. I used the library a lot and had been given some books before that or got some when I arrived and some people were giving them away. I also use a lot books that have online access through MerkMedicus.
Since PBL had anatomy after SBL I used my friend's books for anatomy.

Theoretically there is a book they recomend. I got a used older copy of it off of the internet for 2 dollars.
The quiz is a walk in the park. The VAST majority of people made 100 on that quiz and I think the lowest grade I know of was soemthing like a 94.

JohnUC33 04-29-2006, 03:13 PM Meg,
I can't remember is this was said on my tour or not, but does the library also contain every text book that we need? So thereotically one could just study in there all the time and never have to buy a book?

I know for 4th year rotations you can schedule them anywhere you'd like. As for 3rd year rotations, it has always been required to do them in WV via State Wide Campus but with the drastic increase in class size that could change, or so I hope.
Megalofyia 04-30-2006, 08:01 AM They started something this year called the pilot program. Its a plan to the state wide campus stuff. I dont know a lot about the program but I do know that it's not in West Virginia. Someone who's in it for next year is going to Mississippi first then some northeastern state, etc. for three months at a time.
John - yes the library has technically all the books you need. Although not all the books the bookstore has. I dont know why they dont BUT usually between the Mod man and other students the most current text books are available. Become friends with the students in the military they get all the books already paid for by the government. :D

it has a report of West Virginia higher education and compares WVSOM to Marshall's medical school and WV's medical school.

How do our students do on COMLEX? The latest statistics are always posted in the glass case in the main hallway opposite Brentz Thompson’s office. In June of 2003, the 2003 WVSOM Level 1 cohort passed at a 75% rate, while the seniors taking the August 2003 Level 2 performed at an 94% pass rate.

Yes. I work third shift as well. I am a phlebotomist plus IV (behind closed doors  ) if nurses can't get them. For some reason it was dead boring last night, I'm not complaining though. I did a whopping five draws from 10PM to 4:00AM then did 17 from 4:00AM to 6:30AM. It was slow for a hospital that has 913 beds - Trauma 1 hospital. I usually draw in the mid 30's a night.
A registration tech huh? You must have a lot of "non-busy" nights. It sounds like an ideal undergrad job.

Oh, sounds impressive. I couldn't imagine working in a hospital with that many beds (although I probably will by clinicals). We only have somewhere around 50 beds :o
Yea, since the weather has warmed up, the nights have been pretty laid back up here...although we still get that occasional night where we might have a few really serious cases with the usual "I have only a cough and sneeze but I have a state medical card that allows me free ER care instead of going to a clinic and paying my $2.00 copay patients" and are scrambling all night (small rural hospitals just aren't built to handle a lot of trauma).

Hi!
SuperDOgirl
RedSoxDO 05-02-2006, 02:56 PM BB,
Everyone I've spoken with on the subject has said that it depends on how you learn. Both PBL and SBL cover the same topics. If you do better when given free reign, and you can motivate yourself, then PBL is for you. If you need structure then go with SBL. With that said, my personal opinion is that, although I think PBL is great (my undergrad was very much PBL), when it comes time for the boards, there's no getting around the need to know a whole lot of stuff. In this regard I think SBL has an edge. Case in point, a good friend of mine is an ER attending at Mass General. He said that every year he sees a new class of residents come through, and the students from Harvard (a school heavy on PBL and notoriously bad in Anatomy) lag far behind. Although they have fantastic detective and analytical skills, they lack a lot of data. My intent is not to talk down to PBL or Harvard, just to point out a part of PBL that, for me, could be problematic. If that's not a problem for you then go PBL.
I think WVSOM needs a mascot. I wanted to finish this with GO...... Mountaineers? Tarheels? We got noth'n.
I'll see you in August.
Jeff
I know that this topic has been discussed a little, but I'm having a little trouble deciding which would be best for me. Can someone describe a typical day for SBLer and same for PBLer as well as test format for each.
Thanks

Unlike JohnUC33's experience, I was there two days for the interview and was able to make calls in the General Lewis Inn as well as on WVSOM campus. I was able to hear cleary as well as being heard. Like you, I have a pretty good deal through the hospital I'm working at so I don't want to have to cancel. I could get the same deal with Verizon but my contract is not up yet!
theresa83 05-04-2006, 12:26 AM is it possible for you guys to just hang on to your current service and if that doesn't work out, you can always sign up for another service (like Verizon) later when you've settled down in WV. You can probably do it online, that's what I plan on doing if my phone ends up not working! nowadays, the internet is my only "real" form of communication. hahah go SDN!

Hello, (sorry for the cut and paste, didn't feel like rewriting)
I am a third year student at WVSOM. I am also a member of the first PBL class. There have been some negative threads written about the program. I believe some have been accurate and others have not.
PBL is problem based learning. It is not problem based teaching, or PBT. The cases are designed to encourage and promote learning. They are a springboard to various topics and levels of information encountered in medical school. They may be less than cutting edge, but they provide a good foundation for active student learning. They are certainly not negligent.
I must be completely honest. I absolutely hated PBL the first 10 week block. I felt that I had made a huge mistake. The desire to compare yourself to the SBL students is overwhelming, and sometimes can be discouraging. The varied background of my classmates was also concerning. My perception of, what I perceived as disorganization, was obvious. My problem was that I didn’t understand the concept of PBL. I was concerned that we weren’t learning enough to pass boards. I didn’t trust it, and I didn’t give it a chance before jumping to conclusions.
From what I understand, it is true that my classes pass rate was much lower than the SBL students. The rumor is that the figures posted here earlier are accurate, but what people need to realize is that individuals failed step 1. PBL did not fail the boards. The same goes for the SBL'ers who failed boards. I am not going to try and figure out why they failed, and I’m certainly not going to badmouth any of them. I consider them friends and hope that all have great success in the future. They are all smart and motivated people.
A number of my PBL counterparts made well above the school average. It was somewhere around 485, but I’m not exactly sure what it was. As for myself, my percentile score was 82 and my raw score was 588. These numbers are a comparison to all osteopathic students nationally, both PBL and SBL. I am not disclosing my scores to brag. I just want people to understand that the PBL program at WVSOM has been successful. There were very few tested concepts, on COMLEX, that I had not had some exposure to in the PBL cases. Whether I understood them to the level necessary to answer the questions was entirely my responsibility.
As far as the PBL dean is concerned, I have never felt that he wasn't approachable. In fact, following the release of Step 1 scores, I sent him an email attachment with some suggestions for the program. I’m not sure if any of them were implemented, but they were thankfully accepted. I do not believe he, or any other dean, would be tolerant of anyone trying to completely restructure, or redirect, a program, especially if they haven’t taken boards.
People that know me might respond by making comments about my previous medical experience. That's why he did well on boards. This may be partly true, but it doesn’t explain why a few of my classmates, with no medical experience, did just as well. PBL is their explanation, and I believe the bulk of my success can be attributed to it as well!
I am connected to this program. If it has a bad reputation, then all of the graduates of it may be stereotyped as being inferior. I would like to see everyone pass boards, those in my class and in future classes. PBL is not for everyone. Don’t let a few negative comments discourage you, and for that matter don’t let me make up your mind either. If you are interested in the program, then contact the dean. If you use the cases as a foundation for study, work hard, and find a good board review strategy, then chances are boards will not be a problem.
I have a great amount of respect for all of my classmates, and I made some very good friends during my 2 years in Lewisburg. My clinical rotations are going well, and most of them have been with allopaths (for those of you concerned about a stigma). I have no regrets about doing PBL, and I am certainly not regretful that I didn’t sit in lecture for 40 hours per week!
dnrme44
p.s.-most of my rotations have been with allopathic physicians (M.D.'s). I have had no problems performing to the level that they expect. My rotation grades have been very good, and thier comments on the evaluation forms have been equally as good.

My name is Patrick I anticipate being a second year student next year and I own my own home in Ronceverte, which is just about 5 miles from school (rarely more than an 8 minute drive). I will probably be remodeling the kitchen and bathroom this summer and potentially adding another bathroom. It is a great big house, it will have a great big kitchen. You would be allowed full use of all parts of the house, including highspeed internet, cable, laundry, kitchen, dinning room, living room, basement, swimming pool, yard, nice driveway (i.e. not parking in the street), and a great big deck. I would definitely prefer to live with other guys but my goal is just to get my rooms rented.
Details:
$400 per month
All utilities included
Email me back if you have any questions.
pjk82081 05-06-2006, 12:57 PM is it possible for you guys to just hang on to your current service and if that doesn't work out, you can always sign up for another service (like Verizon) later when you've settled down in WV. You can probably do it online, that's what I plan on doing if my phone ends up not working! nowadays, the internet is my only "real" form of communication. hahah go SDN!
The comparable service to Verizon down here is U.S. Cellular, if you have Verizon registered at your home address then it will use their network without a problem. However, you cannot buy Verizon's service here. Cingular is not available here either but both Cingular and T-mobile will run on Cellular One's network which offers pretty good coverage, especially around school, but in general Verizon/U.S. Cellular is available/has coverage in more places. Hope I helped.
sacred774 05-06-2006, 01:54 PM Hello everyone! I am going to be attending WVSOM this fall, and was wondering if anyone currently down there or someone who knows the area, if they can help me out. I will be moving down to school with my finace', and was wondering what kind of work is available within a reasonable distance from lewisburg for ppl? any help would be much appreciated!thanks

Canuck99 05-08-2006, 12:31 PM anyone care about the NBA playoffs? my heart was broken yesterday in Dallas with the sad performance and loss to the Spurs. there will be redemption in game 2 on tuesday. Dirk is my MVP.
and that brings me to another question. who is going to have a very difficult time moving away from their favorite sports teams. i am an avid mavericks fan and watch them very closey, pretty much every game. i recently bought an authentic dirk jersey off ebay to take with to me lewisburg.

Cannuck,
I've spent most of my life in Boston, but I have lived in New York for some of it, and I can assure you, following your team when far from home is not as bad as you might think. You actually end up following them more closely because they're not on the front page of the paper every day. True, you won't get all the broadcasts, but there's something cool about finding the odd game on AM radio. And when you find another fan, well that just makes your day. Besides, do you really want a Cowboys game dangling in front of you when you've got an anatomy exam the next day?

I'm going to miss the Colts. They get so close to the Super Bowl and then choke. With my luck, now that I am leaving Indy, they will go all the way!!

I'm in the process of filling out the health information stuff for starting in the fall. I've noticed in the packet that it says that the students need to have a current CPR card and AED training. First question, what does AED represent? Secondly, will the school provide us a CPR course at the beginning of school, or do we need to find our own course?
Thanks in advance

Yeah. The requirement is that you have to be licensed in CPR. When you take the course they will teach you how to use the AED as well. AED is just another name for the defibrillator. I thought you have to be licensed in CPR BEFORE heading there but I'm not sure. I took the class as soon as I read that. It was only a day long and you take the licensing exam at the end of the day.
Megalofyia 05-10-2006, 04:49 AM AED = automated external defibulator.
I *think* most CPR classes are going to cover this. When I taught CPR it was always included. If you dont have the CPR card by the time you get here you'll have to do a class somewhere here. I'm not sure if the school offers this or not.
They want you to have the CPR card for when you do clinic stuff.

JohnUC33,
Unless things have changed, they do not offer a CPR course at school. ACLS will be taught before 3rd year rotations.
We tried to encourage them to give a CPR course early in the first year, and again around the time of ACLS. This would carry both certifications through graduation. The CPR card that you get prior to starting school will expire before 3rd year rotations start, you will need a current CPR card for most rotations. ACLS will not count as a replacement to BLS (CPR). They are two separate requirements.
I don't know of any BLS courses that do not have a AED component. The Red Cross and American Heart Association Course's do.
good luck with school.

Class of 2007
theresa83 05-10-2006, 11:06 PM you can always just look on the American Heart Association's website and search locally for a location to take the class at. I hear AHA is a 2 year certification whereas Red Cross is only valid for 1 year. Also, if you currently have one and it is expiring soon, you should consider renewing it while it is still active, otherwise, you may have to retake the course all over again. I hear that in order to renew, you just have to take a refresher/review class which takes much less time. This is what i hear from my local volunteer organization.

I don't believe anyone addressed your question about potential jobs in the area. I suppose it all depends on what type of work you're looking for... WVSOM is fond of hiring significant others at times, and they are also growing.
If you're looking for construction, I'm sure the influx of new students in spurring that on, too. And there are many realtors. There are many agencies dealing with healthcare, including Hospice, Family service centers, and Physical Therapy and fitness clubs. There are many restaurant businesses close to the school and other specialty shops downtown. The Greenbrier often hires for service areas. Then there is Alderson Prison... Each of these places would be within a reasonable distance. Many places are available locally.
I think it would be easier to know what you're looking for... Please e-mail me. If you have specific questions I might be able to help you find answers.
Peace and congrats,

veryvickyish 05-11-2006, 05:56 PM Incidentally, If there is anyone who might be procrastinating on finding a place to live, my landlord is putting in a trailer on the back area of the trailer court. He asked me to spread the word.
I was not fond of living in a trailer, but the price is right, and it's not all that bad. The family, which manages Fair Oaks, is very good at helping you out with things you need. (I have a washer and dryer. They gave me a lot of help to set up mail and power and water... They even let us build on to the trailer we're in, and applied it some toward our rent... ) I have DSL through Verizon, but cable is also available. Half of the trailer court is not able to get Verizon's service  .
I'm not sure when it will be ready, but I know they will do what they can to help. Rent on the trailer would be $250 a month, located in Fairlea. That's about ten minutes from the school on a really bad day, usually only five minutes. I'm sorry I don't know details about the trailer, but you can call and check with them. I know they prefer students, too. My neighbors aren't students, but cool for the most part :) . Please leave me an e-mail and I'll get you the number.
Peace,
Vicky

JohnUC33 05-14-2006, 03:23 AM I emailed our financial aide office the other day to ask what they thought about T.H.E as a lender. Although T.H.E. lists our school as one it does business with, our financial aide lady said that they are still checking on the details regarding T.H.E. She went on to recommend edamerica and access.org. Comparing the three, T.H.E. seems to hands down be the best. What I would like to know from current students is if you know of anyone in particular having problems with using T.H.E. at WVSOM?

Yea, I like posting in that section as well, especially regarding political issues. Some people are well informed, but I'm always surprised by the people who think argue with emotion and use no logic/facts whatsoever. What way do you lean politically if you don't mind me asking?

Nice. I, too, went to Rome and London as well as Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Liverpool, York, Stonehenge, Dublin, Paris, and Holyhead. By far, Edinburgh was the best place to visit. Yeah, It was part of our whiskey tour...some of the craziest whiskey I've ever tasted. I was dissapointed to not have the chance to visit the Western and Southern coastal regions as I have heard elsewhere that Ireland's true beauty lies in these regions. Dublin=typical big city
Sunkyst 05-29-2006, 10:52 PM Hello everyone!
I'll be joining you in the fall - I was accepted back in February, but with my last semester of undergrad and a wedding to plan, I just didn't have the time to bum around on the internet like I wanted to. Now that's all over, so I can finally spend the time to get to know the people I'll be spending the next couple years with! I hope you're all enjoying your summer vacations - I know I am :D
wake920 05-30-2006, 06:00 AM I'm going to be in Lewisburg today to look at some apartments. If anyone is around shoot me a text at 317-345-6782.
User Name 05-30-2006, 07:06 PM Speaking of living arrangements, I kinda waited a little too long to look for somewhere to live. Is anyone still looking for a roomate and/or know of anywhere that still has places to rent (I have no criteria for whom I live with). To be honest, I would live with me if I could.

RD330 06-03-2006, 01:13 PM Has anyone heard from the finacial aid office yet?
jgl1980 06-03-2006, 01:23 PM Has anyone heard from the finacial aid office yet?
I recieved a letter about a month ago and gave me a time period to call and talk about Fin Aid. We don't have to do the private loans until mid July. Hope this helps.
I would have to agree with everyone about temple bar in dublin but of you have not partied in Galway then you are missing a truely enjoyable experience! The place is freaking awesome. Also the Cliffs of Moher is probably my favorite place in Ireland! The drive to the cliffs along to coast is also amazing!!! Hope everyone is having a great summer before the madness begins!
briannarenee316 06-03-2006, 03:01 PM Hi! I just found this site so im really excited!
My name is Brianna and I'm coming to WVSOM from California. I will be doing the SBL track... I'm totally excited but pretty nervous.
I'll be getting to WV about the 25th of July... When is everyone else coming in?
Is there anyone else here from Cali? I know when I interviewd at WVSOM about 1/2 of us were from cali... so im sure there will be at least a couple of us that actually attend.
Well, just wanted to check in and introduce myself, hope to hear from all of you!
Ciao!
P.S. Is anyone doing/considering doing HPSP?? I was thinking of signing with the navy (there are lots of heated debates about this in the military medicine thread) just wondering if any of you WVSOMers are doing it?
Megalofyia 06-04-2006, 06:53 AM I was wondering if any of you class of 2010 are already in Lewisburg?

Hey!!!
Congrats! I think one of the girls I interviewed with is from Cali. I am coming to Lewisburg the first weekend in Aug (kinda late, but I love being in a rush!). Where are you living?
Oh by the way, my name is Crissy and I am from Va (anyone else from VA?) - so sad about leaving the beach! I am also doing SBL-- anyone else doing SBL?
Can't wait to meet everyone

I started the process of signing up for the Air Force, went through the physical, interviewed and started the paperwork, but they ran our of scholarships, so I'll have to do it next year. As long as you are comfortable with three things it's a fantastic deal:
1. You have to go into primary care
2. You go anywhere they want you to go. This includes Iraq, even if you're a pediatrician. Granted, your percent chance of being stationed as a pediatrician in a combat area is close to zero, but you can't go into this thinking you'll wind up in a base near your hometown. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.
3. You belong to the military for 4 years or 5 years after residency. Inactive duty is still duty.
Other than that, it's an incredible deal. You walk into a practice after residency. You're a commissioned officer. If you stay in for 20 years the pension is fantastic, and you can't be sued, so there's no malpractice to worry about.
On a different note, how are you planning on arranging your housing? Will you get a place site unseen or come down early? I'm coming from Mass, so I'd rather not make an extra trip, but I don't want to move into a place I haven't visited.

briannarenee316 06-04-2006, 12:53 PM Crissy - I'm definitely sad about leaving the beach as well! Im going to try and get as much sand time as I can before fall!
J - I already have a "place"... Its kind of funny, because it isn't BUILT yet... but supposedly it will be ready by july! So im keeping my fingers crossed on that one. It seems like it will be nice, as it is brand new and supposedly right across the street from campus (especially since there is no caf)
I did get it sight unseen, as that was really the only option I had as I didn't want to fly all the way out there just to look at apartments.
Do you not have a place yet? I got the number out of the WVSOM housing handbook... If you dont' have a place yet, you might want to start calling pretty quickly as the majority of the places I called about were already taken.
Have a great Sunday everyone!

genericmedst 06-04-2006, 04:07 PM I havent posted on here, been more of an observer. Ill be headed to Lewisburg the first week of Aug. Living in Ridgeview Apts. Brianna yeah I decided to do the HPSP with the Air Force it was a big decision for me but I decided it was worth it with everything considered. I am not sure why RedsoxDO is saying you have to go into primary care...To my knowledge you can go into whatever you want as long as your competitive. Let me know if you want any more info. Cant wait to meet you all.

Actually, that was my fault. I got it mixed up with NHSC. For that you need to go into primary care. I know a guy who did Air Force and is in Emergency Medicine. He had a very good experience.
briannarenee316 06-04-2006, 06:17 PM I saw some posts on here about a medical terminology quiz the first week and a book we are supposed to have for that? I was not told anything about that at the time of the interview...
Does anyone have the final word on this, and what book we need (if we need one)? Many thanks for all your help!
