View Full Version : WVSOM 2010 Anyone?
SuperDOgirl 11-16-2005, 10:01 AM Hi!
I am interested in finding out who will be joining the class of 2010 at WVSOM. I got accepted a month ago and still waiting to hear back from a few schools. I have a gut feeling that I will be going to WVSOM this coming fall. I know the tuition is steep but I am excited for the change in environment, people and lifestyle. Anyways, I just want to have a good idea of who I will be sitting in class with. So gimme a holler! :)

SuperDOgirl looks like we will be sitting in class together! I have already turned in my deposit and in the process of trying to find a place to live.
hmasters5 11-16-2005, 04:33 PM I might be joining you as well.. I sent my deposit in but still waiting from other school as well..
Canuck99 11-16-2005, 06:34 PM Very, very likely that both my wife and I will be attending WVSOM in the fall. We were accepted late October. Pretty sure that we will be sending our deposits this week. The only thing that will keep us from going is if we get into TCOM (we are TX residents), our interviews were earlier this month but we will not know of acceptance until Feb 1st. WVSOM is our first choice for out-of-state schools.
FutureDocDO 11-16-2005, 09:48 PM I might be going there as well. I'm still torn between LECOM-PA and WVSOM.
Anyone with two or more acceptances but decided to attend WVSOM knowing how much higher the tuition is? What factors made you decide on WVSOM? Thank you.
JohnUC33 11-17-2005, 01:58 PM I'll more than likely be there. Got my acceptance last Tuesday. I'm going to interview at PSCOM and check out their school. However, I'm really leaning towards WVSOM.

:) Hi! I was accepted to WVSOM and will be sending my deposit soon! I'm really excited because I loved the school and everyone there. I just got a really good vibe. Plus the school is nationally ranked and in a beautiful town. A nice little get-a-way while getting your medical education. The only change that may happen is if I get accepted to an in-state school. The tuition difference would be the only reason I would not go to WVSOM. We'll see Feb 1st.
krisco99 11-18-2005, 08:27 PM Hey guys I'll be interviewing at WVSOM in Dec. any advice? I'm out of state so the cost is really riding on my shoulders.

If you are flying, National is the cheapest rental car agency there. Be prepared to pay several tolls on the drive there. Stay at THE GENERAL LEWIS  That place is awesome, and you can't beat the rate they give interviewees. Be yourself and enjoy the interview. Just know why be a doctor, DO, and WVSOM and you'll be fine. I honestly enjoyed my interview there. EVERYONE is so friendly. Oh, be sure to have several questions to ask your interviewers. I hope that helps. If you want to know anything else, just PM me.

I agree. It is a very laid back interview. Just be yourself and show your intrest in osteopathic medicine and you will be alright! Good luck with everything
CatsandCradles 11-19-2005, 01:57 PM Hi there.
It looks like I will be going to West Virgina Ost as well. I have picked it over LECOM and AZCOM.
My two concerns with this school is 1) It's expensive and 2) It doesn't have a cafateria
JohnUC33 11-19-2005, 03:00 PM Hi there.
My two concerns with this school is 2) It doesn't have a cafateria
When I interviewed there, the students said that somebody is always cooking lunch for them or some organization is always hosting a lunch that not having a cafeteria isn't really a big deal.

This is true. When I went for my interview I met a couple of the students the day before and I was treated to a free meal that was prepared by some organization. Apparently, this happens quite often.
Richie Truxillo 11-20-2005, 09:58 PM Just wanted to say Grats to all of you who were accepted to WVSOM. As for the lack of a cafeteria, you'll be eating so many club lunches you'll be sick of pizza, Subway, and food from The Tavern. However, there is this sweet lady who works at the Library named Jerry who cooks the best food. You'll never tire of it ;)
As for the cost, I'm an out of stater and yes it's expensive but as a doctor, you'll be able to pay it back eventually. So many hospitals and physician groups have loan payback incentive programs these days.
If ya have questions, please feel free to PM me or post here, I'll try to check in every so often!
Best Regards,
Richie
Richie Truxillo 11-21-2005, 11:20 PM Just checked my mailbox, and it is full. I'm working on getting some replies out as we speak but I might not get to all of them as I'm getting mighty sleepy :)

There is a new WVSOM thread titled, "WVSOM, where its at." do you have any answers for that one. thanks for the help, get to it when you can.

It looks like I will be going to West Virgina Ost as well. I have picked it over LECOM and AZCOM.
My two concerns with this school is 1) It's expensive and 2) It doesn't have a cafateria
What's your reasoning for choosing WVSOM over AZCOM and LECOM when you're "eeking" over the cost of tuition?
Megalofyia 11-30-2005, 10:34 PM 2) It doesn't have a cafateria
This really isn't so much an issue. There is a lot of food around here. With clubs, churches, faculty, going with interviews to lunch, etc. . .
This week for example: I've gotten lunch every day. :D
And for block weeks we get dinner every day. Not to mention the food around town if you keep up with when churches are having dinners or picnics.
There's also an abundance of candy which is especially good!! Dr. Adelman keeps a selection of good quality chocolate.

I love candy, that makes me happy. Any sour patch kids?
Megalofyia 12-01-2005, 07:32 AM There might be somewhere... it seems every other office has candy of some kind.
JohnUC33 12-01-2005, 02:04 PM Free food and candy...I'm sold
Bill_Brasky 12-28-2005, 03:04 PM Go to WVSOM. I had the option of either, and I am much happier at WVSOM than I would have been in Erie, although I will be poorer.

"Third: Did you know Bill Brasky is the godfather of my son?
Fourth: Bill Brasky?
First: He's a big fella!
Second: Oh yeah, he's a big guy! Goes about 6'7", 385.
Third: Well, anyway.. he shows up at the church in his golf pants, caked in mud. Well, ol' Bill Brasky pushes the priest aside and says, "I'll baptize that piece of calamari!" Then he pours Scotch all over my baby son and says, "There! You're baptized!"
Fourth: And your son is blind to this day!
First: Yeah, he makes brooms somewhere in Georgia, doesn't he?
Third: I have no idea. [ pause ] To Bill Brasky!
Together: Bill Brasky!!"

Dont want to limit myself by deciding on anything now, but maybe emergency medicine or anesthesiology. Dont know really.

Hi there everybody!
I'll be going to WVSOM too. For me it was a spilt between WVSOM and LECOM and in the end I just couldn't stand the place LECOM was situated in.
Pluse LECOM is like one big office building too. (Which makes sense for them since you don't want to be outside walking around in in the winter up north!)
But WVSOM, I went there when the flowers were blooming and the trees were green. Everything was soooo green. And I love wide open spaces of grass too!
Canuck99 02-05-2006, 06:18 PM I was hoping to maybe revive this thread
Come on people, lets keep this going.
So why did everyone decide to attend WVSOM? What makes WVSOM a top notch DO school? everyone chime in with their opinion.
FutureDocDO 02-05-2006, 09:32 PM If you're accepted to WVSOM and there's a chance (even if slim) that you'll attend what do you plan to specialize in knowing 87% of the students go into primary care? They require a substantial amount of time for primary care rotation.
I'm not interested in primary care and the amount of debt I'll be in if attending does not help either. Thanx.

I am interested in IM, EM, maybe ortho not sure only time will tell. How has everyone been coming along with the housing situation? I have been talking to a buch of super nice people that have no available housing? I went up there 2 weeks ago to look around at some houses and aslo hit the ski slopes while I was there. Does anyone know when they are planning on moving over there yet?
RD330 02-09-2006, 02:20 PM Can ya'll believe it's still snowing in west virginia? It'll be quite the change for this Texan!! But i'm excited. I think i've seen snow once or twice.

are you still on the fence with which school to go to?
have you seen WVSOM's residency match list for the most recent graduating class?

Yes. I'm still "on the fence". I've seen the match list. It is very comparable to LECOM's.

SNOW :scared: I hear that stuff is cold!!!!!!!! We don't get a whole lot either in south GA. So what part of Tesas are ya from? I lived in Dallas for a while and loved it there.

I'd like to know as well. What make you ignore the HUGE pricetag?
Canuck99 02-15-2006, 01:57 PM is it that nobody has anything to say on this thread anymore, or is it that not enought of our classmates are aware that it is here? i am getting tired of checking the thread and there not being any new posts.

Hi. I think it's because there's not a whole of applicants deciding on WVSOM at this point because they're waiting for another good but cheap school. IMO.

Whats up Futuredoc DO and Cannuk. I have the same feelings as you. I am getting bored with this thead but maybe it will pick closer to the end of MARCH or so. Who knows!!! So when are you going to make up your mind FutureDocDO, about the which school to go to? Have ya'll found a place to live? I think I have a spot secured at those apartments next to the school but time will tell. What do ya'll think of angie? She is freaking awesome isn't she!!!!! :) Angie if you are read this I give ya   You rock!!!
wake920 02-15-2006, 06:14 PM I just accepted to WVSOM 2 weeks ago!! I'm not so excited about the tuition, but can't wait to relocate and meet everyone. I'm new to SDN, so any WVSOM students feel free to e-mail me!!

I am looking at the moment and have put my name on a waitlist for an apartment complex near the school. I wonder if it is the same place. Did you have to put your name on a waitlist?
has anyone thought about buying a house instead of throwing money away on rent?
True that, Angie is freakin awesome. Nicest person I have met in a long time.

Cheers on your acceptance. We will all get over the tuition once we get there and things get started. And when it is all said and done it wont seem so bad when we are making enough money to pay it back.
RD330 02-16-2006, 10:12 AM so are ya'll excited to be the first class in all the new buildings? So high tech :)

Thanks for the cheers!! The financial aid dept. said they have 100% success of their students paying back the debt, so I am not too worried. So when is everyone moving to Lewisburg?? I am thinking mid summer, though hopefully I will secure a place to live here very soon!
FutureDocDO 02-16-2006, 09:38 PM What's the number to that aparment across the street/within walking distance from the school? Is it nice/decent? What's the lay-out...are there any pictures? Who do I call to add my name to the waitlist and whether it cost anything to do so? Thanks a bunch!

What happening everybody!!! I am most likely going to be moving up that way around mid july but I have to get me a place secured first. I'm pretty pumped about the WiFi in the new buildings. I can't remember the name of those apartments but I will try and find that phone # for you I have it around here some where. But you could call angie and she will give it to you. The woman that runs the apartments will send you pics through the e-mail if you ask her to. They are 2 bedroom. One is much larger than the other one and one bathroom both of which are upstairs. Downstairs there is a place for a living room and a small eating area with a kitchen with a washer and dryer hook up. You can not beat the location. I wonder if you would be able to pick up the schools WiFi signal at the apartments????
RD330 02-16-2006, 10:33 PM I just got the email from the landlord. I put my name on the waitlist and she said the sooner you get on the waitlist the better. I was impressed with the pics and I heard that most of the place is rented out by students. Really good price for what you get. $550/month for a two bedroom/two story apt. I was paying $700/month for a closet in Dallas, TX. I'm excited :D

I saw pictures of the those woodland acres apts, they look great. pretty, pretty, pretty good. you definitely cant beat the price for what you get and the location.
Anyone know that board pass rates over the past few years?
Canuck99 02-18-2006, 01:01 AM For those that are moving from another state, is anyone bringing pets along.
JohnUC33 02-18-2006, 01:54 AM Sorry that I haven't added much to this thread. I plan on moving near the end of July. I have a nice one bedroom apartment a mile from the school for $375 a month. Just found out this week that I'm accepted into the PBL program. Is anyone else thinking about PBL? If so, what are your reasons? As for what I plan to specialize in, I have not the foggiest idea. Of course, I am a little inclined towards primary care, but that might change once I get started.
For me, the tuition is not that big of a thing. At first, I was weary of it, but I got to thinking that I only do the med school experience once; so I best go to the place that I know I want to attend. I got accepted to another school, yet I really didn't want to attend there although it is pretty cheap. Since I'll be paying for my education, I figure that I might as well attend the school that I like best regardless of the cost. Honestly, if I do primary care, I'll just return home or to another rural area and get loan repayment negotiated into my contract. If I specialize in something highly competitive, then I'll probably make enough money that the payments won't hardly hurt me.
Can't wait to see you guys/girls in the fall!!!

Congrats on the PBL!! I am sticking with SBL. I have to have the organization. I was thinking about pediatrics or internal medicine. I am really counting on working in a rural area to sign a "forgive your debt" contract.
Canuck99 02-18-2006, 12:27 PM Pretty sure that I have made my decision to go with SBL.
Ya, if you dont mind, could you give the name and number of the apartment complex. That is a great price. Are there other students in the same complex? If you would prefer you can send a PM.

Well spoken, this is exactly how I feel about the tuition.
When did you pick out that apartment? Did you do it without actually seeing it, or were you able to see it when you went for your interview?

Yup. I think I've decided to attend WVSOM now that there's more information in the Pre-Osteopathic forum about the LECOM-PA's pass rate being 76%. I thought it was 87%, which is low but bearable. 76% is too darn low! for me. There are a few other negatives about LECOM that I find disturbing. I think I'll start looking for an apartment now or fly there around Spring Break to look for one. Woodland acres apts are two bedrooms only right?
Is everyone thinking about hauling their furnitures (i.e., bed, couch, table, etc..) to Lewisburg since there's not a single furniture store in town? I would NOT want to drive all the way there if at all possible. Is there a place to get a used/new car in Lewisburg... something that will run forever such as a Nissan of Toyota? If not, I suppose I could fly into Charleston or Roanoke, buy a car there and drive to Lewisburg. Thanks.

I'm moving from TN. I'm renting from the McGraw's. They own the funeral home in town. No, I didn't get to check out the apartment. Instead, the guy who stays there now sent me a bunch of pics and only had praise for the apartment and landlords. I got it from Ethel McGraw. The number should be on the housing list, but PM me if you can't find it.

See my above post. Yea, there are like ten units in the apartment complex and nine house WVSOM students. I know she had a two bed-room available as well. How many rooms are you looking for? For me, I just went small and cheap :D

Just wanted to stop in and post some love for the class of 2010! I'll be doing my best to make the board pass rate look good in these next 119 days for ya'll (Well and myself hehe)!
You guys live it up from now until then. PBL or SBL...doesn't matter! Prepare for a wild ride come late August!

theresa83 02-19-2006, 11:03 AM Sorry that I haven't added much to this thread.
Can't wait to see you guys/girls in the fall!!!
did they send you more info on PBL and SBL, or was it from the checkmark you chose on your application?

do you know the SBL board scores over the past few years?
JohnUC33 02-19-2006, 06:52 PM did they send you more info on PBL and SBL, or was it from the checkmark you chose on your application?
I heard they send you stuff after you get accepted and pay your deposit. I was impatient after I got accepted and contacted the head guy myself. You mainly just write an essay on why you want to do PBL and a committee reviews your essay to see if you get in or not. It only took like 2-3wks for them to decide after I submitted my essay

Yes I am considering the military options. I just got some information today on the Navy. I'm not sure yet what the pro's and con's are of all the different branches.

I am doing the Navy. I always had an interest in it, plus they help tremendously in paying for med school. I feel like it will be a great experiance. I grew up with it- my dad is a colonel in the army. Let me know if you have any questions. Guess I was just wondering if anyone would be at 'officer training camp' with me in newport, RI this summer.
JohnUC33 02-21-2006, 02:58 PM Many people had contacted me about the apartment that I will be renting this upcoming year. Well, I contacted her today, and she said that she has 3 more two bed-room apartments for $400 a month available. If you need some more info, drop me a pm. Best of luck to everyone in their hunt!
trish10 02-21-2006, 03:16 PM I'm not sure how to send the private message, so sorry I have to post this! But if you could send me the info about the apartments, like a name or phone number that would be awesome. Have you been able to see what they look like? I think I read they house a good deal of the med students, and I like that idea. Talk to you soon, thanks for the help
simpy2000 02-21-2006, 03:47 PM I'm 29 and will be 30 when school starts in the Fall.
Moving from Indiana in mid to late June. I am not having much luck with the apartment complexes. I have called a few and left messages (Woodland Akers, Ridgeview, etc.) but they have not responded. I visited Lewisburg this past weekend and I thought many of the places looked sketchy. Can someone send me the email address of the Woodland Akers landlord or forward me the email containing the pictures?

Thanks!

Hey! Email is on its way...The Woodland Akers landlord was really nice when I talked to her and the apartment complex looks pretty nice compared to some of the others. In an old historical town, it's hard to find what I'm used to (the big city)...which is brand spankin' new apartments EVERYwhere. I really like the idea of a little change. I think it'll only help me to focus on med school and not be distracted by city life/friends/family....you get the idea!
hope the email helps
See you in Fall!

i'm dreading anything with BioChemistry and I'm really excited about System Based Learning. The gross anatomy lab is really nice, so I look forward to that class too! Has anyone heard about what the new lecture hall looks like? It was under construction when I went for my interview in Sept.

I'm looking forward to PBL. Yet, I'm really dreading Biochem because I didn't take it in undergrad.

RD330 02-28-2006, 11:23 PM Glad to meet another "class of 2010" student! You should call Angie about getting a list of available apartments. It's really helpful.

There are currently three people looking for a roommate and they're ALL girls.
ronin_ir 03-01-2006, 04:22 PM Just a bit of advice. Do not go into the PBL track @ WVSOM. Last year six of twenty-one students in the PBL track failed the COMLEX. Don't belive the "Comlex scores are as good or better than those of the SBL" line. The PBL class of 2007 did and now one-third of the had to take the COMLEX at least twice and some of them more that twice. By comparison 90% of last years SBL class passed the first time.

Thanks for the advice. Where did you get those statistics?? I have been looking everywhere for the pass numbers and even asked during my interview, but no one could tell me how the PBL students did compared to the SBL.

This is true. According to a current professor at WVSOM: "Last year our overall passage rate for first time takers was 87.5% - SBL did better with over 92% passage rate, the PBL passage rate was only 71.4% but most that failed indicated they did not prepare well."
If you want to do PBL, LECOM-Erie would be a better choice as they consistently outperform LDP (lecture discussion pathway) students. But then again it wouldn't be hard to do so since I've heard their LDP students only have a 76% first time pass rate.
ronin_ir 03-01-2006, 11:05 PM I am currently a student @ WVSOM. If you guys have any question feel free to ask. BTW someone said that there are no furniture stores here but there are at least three and they are building another.
happyprairiedog 03-02-2006, 01:40 PM As for the comment(s) about PBL at WVSOM - let me warn against looking too much into one set of data and extrapolating everything from that. The PBL tract is an excellent option at WVSOM and is getting better and better as the program matures. If anyone has any questions about it - feel free to PM me.

That's good to know. They do sell mattresses right?
Richie Truxillo 03-02-2006, 09:48 PM  Sorry for not posting in awhile. Been burrowed studying for boards and a POM exam! :P
First Board failure stuff: It's fairly simple...if you don't prepare for boards you don't pass. Before you all ask, I started studying for boards back in November. We'll see how that approach pans out. :)
As for Woodland Akers, I know there is a waiting list for people right now, however there are at least 5 apartments coming available in June that I know of (including my own  ) Julie is slow but she will get back to you eventually as she is a part time college student. It is usually in the evenings.
Had a couple messages about immunizations. Please be sure to have your titers taken for Hep B (or start your series). It will save you time having to wait in like at the Robert C. Byrd clinic during the year.
Addressing another private message: The medical terminology "quiz" you get at the beginning of class is cake. Don't stress over it.
Ok back to notecards I go. 100 down, 26 to get down cold still :) Gah, I've turned into a memorizing machine.
Much love,
Richie
ronin_ir 03-03-2006, 05:36 AM Yes they sell mattresses. Actually I didn't include a Mattress Warehouse in the list of three stores. Also didn't include the Lowes, WalMart, or K-Mart in the list of three either and they all sell some furniture. If you get too sick of the small town Beckley, (large town by WV standards) is only 40 min away and Roanoke VA isn't much further although in thr opposite direction.

As a current WVSOM student, I agree with this post but for additional other reasons. No, I do not at all feel prepared for boards because we simply don't get enough information. You basically start off with systems from the very beginning and skip over basic physiology, biochem, genetics, micro, etc. As nice as it sounds, no group ever goes back to study these basic topics and you are left with HUGE gaps in your education that you spend valuable board review time trying to fill. Especially if you haven't had biochem as an undergrad, you'll find yourself up a creek without a paddle for sure.
The other major reason is that you just don't get squat for your $42k (for out-of-state). You get a seat at a table for a few hours each week and about 60 "cases" that I could write in a weekend with a Harrison's (not to mention the ones that were ripped off from a certain OTHER osteopathic school and have not been updated since the mid 90s). We don't get access to the histology lab or microscopes, even though they charge you for them in your tuition. School events are never scheduled with our exam/class schedules in mind. They keep switching the exam format and the entire PBL curriculum is constantly shifting. And any time there is a lecture for the entire class, we either watch it via video camera in a separate uncomfortable classroom or have to try and find seats in the larger SBL classroom.
Maybe individually these things aren't a big deal, but for what they charge especially for out-of-state students, they should be handing you your education on a silver platter. Right now we are lucky if we get the scraps from the table.
MUHerd34 03-03-2006, 06:47 PM Hi all......I have been reading some of the posts lately and it seems everyone is getting pretty excited about getting things going. I plan on moving down there around July or so. Found a great house less than a mile from campus which is awsome considering I am somewhat lazy...lol Anyway just wanted to say whats up and cant wait to meet everyone in the fall.

And actually this still does not cover it all. All the problems I mean. There seems to be no master plan to get from new to medicine to ready for the COMLEX. And you are dicouraged from using bourd review books or the SBL notes as a blueprint for study. Any complaints are viewed with hostility by the dean. You spend the first several months just trying to learn how to study and this wastes valuable time. Another waste of time is trying to really understand the lab values that are in the case. They are often not there or wrong or simply don't fit. You are reminded that these are actual cases written by doctors but in some cases if the doctor did not order any more tests than are given in the case then it is simply gross negligence. After a while this becomes very frustrating. Part of the attraction is that it seems easier. But there isn't an easy way to get ready for COMLEX.
RD330 03-04-2006, 07:49 PM Well...then, SBL here i come :) Was kind of the plan all along. How can i resist being the first class in the new fancy lecture hall.
JohnUC33 03-06-2006, 12:38 AM I just wanted to say thanks to all the current WVSOM students who are posting advice on this thread. I'm sure all future students would agree that we will listen to whatever advice is given.
Not to start a PBL vs SBL war, I would like to discuss this subject a little more. I just got accepted into the PBL program and look forward to starting. Why? Mainly because I learn best on my own and find lectures to be a complete waste of time for me. For me, PBL seems to be the perfect fit. I know the main argument presented in this thread against PBL is the COMLEX preparation. If I understand correctly, do not PBL students have a lot more spare "time" and liberty to study what they choose. I know this is coming from someone who does not actually have first-hand experience in the subject. But, if a person is disciplined enough to study on his own and go over the board review material on his own, why would he want to sign up for ineffectual lectures (from his prospective)?
About biochem, I never took that in undergad. But, I basically taught myself O-chem I and II w/A's in both. I would like to know if biochem is that much harder than O-chem to learn?
Anyways, I really would like to hear more discussion on this topic. Current students please continue to contribute because your prospectives are very valuable.

Have u found an apartment/house yet? I'm still searching.
JohnUC33 03-06-2006, 03:03 AM Have u found an apartment/house yet? I'm still searching.
Yep, got a one bed-room about a mile from the school for $375 a month. When I called her a few weeks ago, she had three two-bedroom for $400 a month available. Just scroll up to one of my previous posts on this thread. But I'm glad that you finally decided on WVSOM :D It took you awhile, but you finally came over to the light!
RD330 03-06-2006, 09:04 AM I will be getting a place at Woodland Akers (1/4 mile from the school) in July. $550/month for a two bedroom/two story!
RD330 03-06-2006, 09:09 AM As far as the pbl vs. sbl. I can see why both would be very helpful. I'm just glad that I'll be at a school that offers multiple approaches for their students. That way everyone can feel like they're getting the most out of med school.
So? What is everyone here doing in the mean time before med school starts? I'm leaving for Europe on Sunday!!! :)
FutureDocDO 03-06-2006, 09:20 AM So? What is everyone here doing in the mean time before med school starts? I'm leaving for Europe on Sunday!!! :)
I'm working to save up money :( . I wish I could travel but oh well. I'm planning to quit a month or two before school starts and take a much needed rest.
trish10 03-06-2006, 10:54 AM I'm working on graduating college first haha. As for everyone asking about biochem, it is a lot of information, it's true. But at the same time, its a great class because it ties in gen bio, gen chem and orgo. I know it will be tougher and contain more information when we take it in med school, but still it ties in everything. I found it to be more like a total capping course for being a science major (I actually chose to major in biochem too)
I'm heading down to the WVa next week to look at places, and check out the area in general again- anyone else planning on going down soon?

I also learn best when studying on my own and not wasting time in lecture. That is probably the one saving grace about the PBL program. However, you are bound to study whatever the group agrees on for that day, so if you have already studied that topic in a previous group you have to waste valuable time going over the same material you learned months ago. I just love being tested on the same material twice!
Reviewing material is ok (and necessary before exams of course) but the insane volume of material that we are expected to master in two years simply doesn’t allow it. Compare the daily workload that SBL gets vs. PBL- it just doesn’t compare. In medical school you want to err on the side of getting too much thrown at you rather than too little (ref COMLEX performance).
But don’t PBL students learn the material better? Probably. But if SBL had two weeks to study just one class of drugs, they would know it inside and out too!
Another major flaw in our PBL program is that 30%-40% of your final grade is based on your participation and group discussion skills, not on your knowledge base about the material you have learned. So unless you are an alpha dog and gun for control of the group, even if you ace the content exam, there is no guarantee of a decent grade. It is absolutely ridiculous to grade someone in MEDICAL SCHOOL based on whether or not they “work well with others” – wasn’t that an elementary school thing?
When I was applying, they presented the PBL program to us as the best thing since sliced bread. Even though it was only in its second year at WVSOM, we were told that the exact same system had worked fine for 10 years at a different school, all of the bugs were worked out, that board pass rates were excellent, etc. Nothing could be farther from the truth, because it is obvious that this thing was simply thrown together. And as ronin put it, any complaints or suggestions to better the program are viewed with hostility by the administration, and you are sent on your way with a “Don’t worry about it, the system works, you’ll see.” Sorry, but I don’t like other people gambling with my education (or my money).
Regardless, in the grand scheme SBL vs. PBL doesn’t really matter (so long as you pass boards)…what really matters is clinical education. I don’t mean to discourage or pi$$ any of you off, but clinical ed here is another circus sideshow all of its own. If you haven’t laid down that awful $2k deposit yet, I would seriously consider other options for your medical education. Even if you have paid it, it is a small loss.

ronin_ir 03-06-2006, 06:18 PM Yes there are bumps in the road. Yes you may have some regrets. BUT WVSOM is still a very good school.
If I had it to do all over again I may not go to an osteopathic school. But if I did it would still be either WVSOM or MSU-COM.
When I applied to med school I only applied to osteopathic schools. I was excited to learn about OMT and thought the trade of of being a DO would be worth it. The OPP Dept. @ WVSOM has done a lot to change my mind.
Having said this I should also point out that I have not had a lot of clinic time with real patients involving OMT. When I came here I thought OMT was mostly HVLA (the stuff that causes a "pop"). This is not the case and a lot of the stuff you are expected to take on faith that it works. At the same time they are telling you "Trust us this OMT stuff works" they are saying that treatment should be evaluated by what has the best outcome based on clinical trials and studies. Most OMT has not been proven in clinical trials and those techniques that have been in trials often have no better outcome than placedo. But I digress.
The point is that WVSOM for all of its flaws is still a good school. At least within WV where WVSOM students and WVU and Marshall students are compaired, WVSOM is not found to be lacking and in fact are often evaluated to be superior to out allopathic brethren.
All of the major problems seem to be in the administration, not the faculty. So while WVSOM will give you headaches, it will also give you a good education.
Part of the problem is that WVSOM tries to cram so much into the first two years. This can be very frustrating at times but can pay big dividends during rotations which is where you usually make or break your residency chances.
In short (too late I know) have no regrets about choosing WVSOM, but PBL is best avoided at least for now.

I had actually called Angie and was put on a roomate list, then a first year down there (who lives with a 2nd year now) contacted me. I'm going to be checking her place out when I go down. Truthfully, I thought I'd like having a roommate because I live in a house with 7 now and am used to having people around ALL the time, but it can work both ways you know.
I'm going to be down there the 13th and 14th. Let me know what your plans are.
So where are you from?

I'm still deciding between SBL and PBL and thanks for everyone's incite. Does anyone have anything really good to say about PBL? It seems to me that it just depends on how each person learns and studies best.
Also for the current students, how hard was it to get all the loan money? Any help would be appreciated.
Megalofyia 03-08-2006, 11:02 PM I really like PBL. There is no way I would have done SBL, even with the PBL faults. Granted I'm also not increadibly stressed at the moment worried about boards since mine are over a year away.
I have had no probs with loan money. I just applied and it was given to me. Way more than I needed; the amount that is alotted to students is more than you actually need.

Who did you get your loans through and at what rates? Also how much do you think the average 1st year should take out?
Megalofyia 03-09-2006, 08:40 PM Who did you get your loans through and at what rates? Also how much do you think the average 1st year should take out?
Honestly I dont remember who I got my loans through. It was through whoever the school suggested in their finantial aid packet. I remember the rates being about the same as the interest on an INGdirect account; thus I got an INGdirect savings account to put my extra loan money.
I took out the maximum just in case. At the end of my second year I'll just give the school all the money I have in that INGdirect account.
Because I was rather frugal with money last semester...eg. I didn't get cable or internet, was minimal with electricity and just general spending money (other than beer money) I could have done this semester with half of what I accepted. . . Just to give you an idea of how much they do overestimate what they predict.
Damnit Dan!

I am glad that you like PBL. I really am. There are some in the 2nd year class that are still pro-PBL but they are the minority. And unless there are some big changes then at this time next year a majority of students in PBL 2009 will be less than enthusiastic also.
There are some good things about PBL. Getting a more clinical side of the basic sciences is a big plus. And SBL is not without iys faults. But right now the minuses of PBL far outweigh the pluses.

I'm going on the SBL track, so it's nice to meet some of you heading on the same route. I am not so sure about how separate SBL is from PBL, but since the classes are different then I'm not sure we'll have so much interaction...which sucks because I'd like to work with some of you PBL'ers too.
I've started looking for an apartment, but it's been alot harder than I thought. I wish that WVSOM had dorms for the med students. Congrats to everyone that has an acceptance! :)

Have you emailed ANGIE BOWYER for a housing list? It is getting shorter as they fill up but it's helpful. I wish WVSOM has dorms as well but they WILL NOT and DO NOT have plans to build any. The school helps support the town by bringing money there so it's important to have the students rent from the town's people than having dorms.

No, I haven't contacted Angie Bowyer yet but I will do that tomorrow. I am thinking about going up to WV soon to check out the apartments available...I'm not really comfortable renting something that I've never seen before. Many of the places that I've called are full, so I'm sure an updated availability list would be helpful. Thanks for the advice!

I'd fly there to check the place out myself but I'm short on money. Flying there costs money and for each day I'm gone I lose potential earning money from my current job so I'd rather not. I'm cheap I know  . For a guy that's thinking about attending the second most expensive DO schools that doesn't make a whole lot of sense!

Oh, I'm not flying...road trip, baby! Of course, it's not really a road trip because I'll be alone. Blah. After looking at my class schedules it would be best for me to leave this weekend before my tests start picking up again, and everyone already has set plans. Sucks. From Florida it's a 12 hour drive. I'm not looking forward to it. But I looked up tickets and it's RIDICULOUSLY expensive if you want to go last minute (range of a couple of weeks in advance) and I don't have the courage to spend that much.

tsdesai 03-16-2006, 09:21 PM Hi everyone,
Congrats to everyone on acceptances. I have also been accepted and look forward to attending WVSOM. I know it a good school and people there are the nicest in the world but is anyone, besides me, concerned about the fact that WVSOM has nearly doubled its class size. Do they have enough faculty members to be able to provide the kind of assistance they were able to provide with a smaller class? Also, do they have enough locations for clinical rotations to accommodate this increase in class size?
I am sure they must have thought if this as well but I wanted to know if anyone has asked them about this and what kind of a response did they receive?
I would also appreciate any input from current student on this topic as well.
Thank you.

I have had experience in both worlds. I left SBL last year to take a personal leave for palliative care of my mother. Now I am in PBL. I believe that PBL is best for me. Yes, it is possible to learn both ways. Your education is what you make it!
My mother once gave me advice... Pay attention to all of your options. Think about them carefully. Weigh the possibilities and problems... and then do as you damn well please... you will anyway!

They are currently interviewing and hiring new faculty members for several disciplines, and for the most part the faculty are great at making sure you can get access to them during office hours, email, etc. I don't think that the increased class size will change this too much because I think it is a personal thing- they want to be involved with students, they don't wall themselves off in an office or a lab (for the most part).
In terms of clinicals, your guess is as good as anyone's. This is something I wish I had looked into more before I got to WVSOM and I strongly encourage you to inquire directly to the clinical education office about this concern now, not later. Perhaps by the time your class reaches third year they will have created enough slots for students but I just don't see it happening- there aren't enough hospitals in the entire freaking state!
"I am sure they must have thought of this as well but " <-- Don't count on it

When do first year students get their white coats? Vicky, do you know what WVSOM is doing as far as rotation in preparation for the increase in students? Are they starting to allow 3rd students doing rotations outside of WV? Thanks.

I went to the book store over the summer and fitted my white coat way before time. Note: You have to get it monogrammed with your name at some point, too. It is required for clinic... and there is a small fee. I'm not sure they do the monograms before the ceremony  The gals at the book store are great at answering any questions.
As for rotation sites, I have had only a brief conversation with Dean Adelman about that. He assured me there would be no problem. (My husband hopes to be a future student, so we are concerned, too). I didn't have time to ask specifics on WVSOM's plans. I was hoping for rotations closer to my hometown. He seemed to think that would be happening... the year after my clerkship begins. But, hey, that means more sites for your class (but where and how many are a mystery). Maybe after I get through my exams this week, I can hunt down a better answer for you... I didn't ask about out of state rotations. Anyone else have some answers?
Peace,
Vicky

You might want to consider a train ride.
For me, a car ride takes about 10 hours if I were to drive very fast. A train ride is takes just about as much time. It is nice in that you can relax a bit and the chairs are just huge and comfortable. They also have a hot foods counter in their train too :)
The closest train station is in a town called "White Sulphur Springs" and they have the Greenbrier resort. I'm not kidding you that place looks like the White House. I'm told that a lot of big golf tornaments take place their.
The bad news is that the station is about 7 miles from the school. So I had to take a cab to get me to Lewisburg. :(
I think my train ticket, round trip, came out to be about 150 dollars total.

Hey, Do you have a website or number for that train station?
CatsandCradles 03-21-2006, 07:27 PM Hey, Do you have a website or number for that train station?
Try doing an Amtrack search on line. My trip was Wilmington, Delaware going to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
If you do consider the train please keep in mind that the train station at White Sulphur isn't something huge. It's just a waiting station out in a forest - there's nobody at the station so you might want to search for a cab before you consider the train ride. I searched for a taxi service on line before I went to the interview - cause I didn't know anything about the area. I remember searching for a cab to be very problematic, despite the fact that there was a famous golf resort right next to the train station. I guess I just didn't know the area and ended up paying $70 for a cab service
And then when I finished with the interview, someone told me that there was this $5 shuttle service - and when I confessed to them that I had payed $70 the admissions committe laughed at me. :D
And the price of the train ride for me was actually cheaper now that I have found the ticket stub, $112.
I guess if you live on the east coast, or in the midwest the train is a viable option - but if your from the west coast the cost of the trip might become problematic.
wake920 03-22-2006, 05:57 PM Has anyone else received a letter from the financial aid office asking you to call them between specific dates to discuss your financial aid package? I just thought that was a bit odd since most schools usually send out packets with the information.
Duchess 03-22-2006, 08:04 PM Hey guys, if you requested apartment info then check your mailbox.
JohnUC33,
I rented the apartment from the Kahlers' (listed Helge Kahler in the WVSOM directory). It's an amazing one bedroom...I'm so happy with it! And close to the school too. It's pretty darn big, and $550 per month. A great deal. I hope everyone is as happy with their place as I am with mine.
CatsandCradles,
Thanks for the train info, I'll keep that in mind for next time. Although the next time I go up there will probably be to move in sometime around July.
When do you guys think you'll be moving up there (or down there, depending on where you are now  )
theresa83 03-22-2006, 09:11 PM i'm not sure when i'll get there, but if possible, we should plan to all meet up. i'd like to put a face to all these funky screen names!

Ok ok I'm weird - I admit it

Whatever. We're all classmates now.
By the way, you guys might want to add your names to the *Official Acceptance Thread* in the pre-osteo forum. I'm the only WVSOM person on there right now...

Uhhh... you're not the only person. ;) I added my name to it way back in September 2005. You'll see what I'm talking about if you scroll up a couple of posts. Someone must have removed it because it's getting too long, i.e., over the character limit. I've added WVSOM back on and removed all the extra/unnecessary characters people added so there should be plenty of space for others to add.

I just received mine today. I guess they had to wait for the 2nd deposit before giving me a MI with their proposed tuition increase, $46,736. That's a 3K increase from last year. They told me at the interview that there has been an increase every year so tuition could be over 50K by the time we graduate! They're going to surpass MSUCOM pretty soon.

Hey that was me suggesting the white water rafting trip. I can look up costs and dates if people are interested?? I usually go every summer with USA Raft and the cost is usually around $80 for a 4 hour weekday trip down the lower New River. If anyone is interested e-mail me at wakefieldee@hotmail.com

If any one is concerned about the increase in class size, as i was, then i have good news. I wrote an email to Dr. Pence, who is part of the faculty and involved in some rotation set up. His reply was "The school has added new faculty (Both PhD's and physicians) and had to have all the new rotations in place before the AOA would grant the increase in class size. Also new hospitals and rotation sites have been added and additional sites are currently being developed. The school will be ready including the opening of the new buildings in August 2006.

1.) The beach....and surfing!
2.) kickboxing, and my dojo
3.) warm weather for 80% of the year
4.) a variety of restaurants....especially SUSHI!
5.) having a choice of bars/clubs to go out to (not that I'll have much time for that anyways, but still)
6.) GREAT shopping

5. my running friends and swimming buddies
6. an imported beer list with more than 2 beers on it.....General Lewis take notes
7. alas, the radio stations!! Does West Virginia know what alternative music is and what "unplugged" means??

Yes, I love martial arts. I'm a red belt in Taekwondo. Since I'm moving for school, I'll be like two months from being able to get my black belt :( I'm a little familiar with Kenpo...a guy I used to spar in college was a national kenpo champion and we had some good matches. Hey, you ever studied Aikido? That art is my favorite. About Jujitsu, if you have never studied it, do it. It art has to be one of the best all-encompassing arts.

We meet in a ballet studio kinda near the school (but not walking distance about 10 min driving distance from the school). So we do have a dojo. It's a fun class but we need more people. Right now there are just three regular members that show up for class.

JohnUC33,
Good luck on your future blackbelt test! Very exciting! We have lots of people that had Taekwondo experience come to our dojo, and their kicks are always amazing since you guys work legs so much (or so I've been told). I really enjoy kenpo, it's definately something that I want to keep up and maybe go back to someday. It's more of a street-based style so there are TONS of practical uses for it. That's the whole reason I got involved with martial arts...to have something that I could use in a realistic situation. Very fun.

Duchess,
Thanks. But I meant to say that I'm moving for school a few months before I can test for my black belt, so I probably won't be able to get it. Yea, Taekwondo is mainly about kicks. But sometimes we on work on kicks so much that it loses it practicality. Why spend hours perfecting a jumping back round house when you know its foolish to use that kick in a real self-defense scenario? The art I really want to spend my life learning is Aikido, but its hard to find a teacher.

We aren't doing Brazilian jujuitsu. It's more traditional Japanese. We have a guy in our class who used to study Brazilian jujuitsu; he seems to be enjoying the class.
Dr. Ward is the jujuitsu teacher (as well as one of the anatomists). His email is pward@wvsom.edu

Go-ju is a very traditional Okinawan form of martial arts. It has some similarities to akido with all the circular motions just not as in depth as akido. I liked it better than Taekwondo but that is just my opinion.

Canuck99 04-02-2006, 12:16 PM I've tried it a few times and stank horribly, but I've always wanted to learn. But I do play golf somewhat regularly. Anyone else?
not on a regular basis, but i like to play. what are the courses like in and around lewisburg?
theresa83 04-02-2006, 04:34 PM I guess I am the only one who knows nothing about martial arts. I went to a few Aikido classes during college because they had a class on campus, but that was about it.
Anyone into poker or cards. My fiance and I have a couple sets of the professional chips and play with friends on monday nights, mostly texas hold 'em. If anyone's interested maybe we could get together and do this sometime.
i'm in. all in.

FutureDocDO 04-03-2006, 12:47 AM Does anyone know if WVSOM is moving to the "normal" exam schedule or is it still in blocks. I've heard last year that they were proposing of doing that this fall but haven't heard anything yet.
Who else is going the cheaper route and getting a sleeping room instead of an apartment? Since there's no lease I figured if I don't like it I could always move in with someone during the school year or get my own place when it becomes available and since I will be in the area I could check it out.

I am SO glad to hear that you found a place! Doesn't it feel like a weight has been lifted off of your shoulders? I remember how stressed I was when I was apartment hunting. I'll give you a call later to hear all about it. Best of luck to anyone else apartment hunting!

I was planning on sometime in July because I figured most people would be moved to Lewisburg by then.
......this is probably a really dumb question, are we responsible for seeking out our own private loans to cover what their financial doesn't cover??? If so, has anyone set up their private loans yet? I don't know anyone whose tuition has cost more than the government allocated Stafford loans. One year of our tuition is more than 2 years of my brother's medical tuition.......sickening!!!

my understanding is that FASFA will allocate all of your government loans and then anything that we need after that must come from a private loaner. if you want, WVSOM will help you with obtaining your private loans from lenders that they are affiliated with. however, you are free to go anywhere to get your private loans.
has anyone received a letter from the WVSOM financial aid office? i got one in the mail not too long ago.

If you are interested in being a military physician or are currently in the military, try for an HPSP scholarship (pays EVERYTHING and gives you $1300/month stipend on which to live). Otherwise, USAA is very generous and helpful with their loans.

Does that mean I can't attend WVSOM and that I shouldn't apply to it?. Is it ok for me to attend it even though I won't follow the focus of the schol?

I agree it is sickening to how much they are making us pay. I am so concerned about how i will pay off such an outrageous debt after graduation. Not to mention the debt that i'm already in from my undergrad loans

I think that you should go to the school you want to go to---a place where you think you will get the best education. Part of the reason I am going to WVSOM is because I might want to practice rural medicine (not in WV), but you can get a good education from the school. WVSOM might help those who want to pursue rural primary care in WV, but it won't hurt you if you don't. I think for what you are talking about, the place that you do your residency will matter more. Most med students change what specialty they want to go into anyway. If you still have the same intentions for practice in MI, then you probably should do your residency there. That's just my opinion.

the school is not going to make you do anything. do what you want, apply to where you want. but in my opinon, it would be best if you are open minded to what WVSOM or any other school has to offer. as long as you have a slight interest for rural medicine and you aren't shutting the door on that, then i think you can be happy at WVSOM.
Xclone 04-09-2006, 12:17 AM I have decided to go to WVSOM. I like the town, the people, and it's a great school (with nearby Snow Shoe Mnt). that is correct. you absolutely do not have go into rural medicine or even have an interest in rural medicine in order to be accepted to WVSOM. in fact, in my interview i was asked what specialty i planned on pursing and i did not mention rural medicine or family practice and i still got in. WVSOM will give you a great medical education and prepare you for whatever residency you decide to pursue.
JohnUC33 04-10-2006, 01:56 AM I hope no one takes this question as being too personal, but I want to get an idea of how much different people plan on taking out in loans? I know everyone/situation is different, but I want to get an idea of how many people are going to take that max $70,000+. To make sure I have enough, I am thinking about taking out the high sixties. Mainly, I just want to use whats left over to get my car paid off (not too good of an interest rate on that deal). By the end of my four years, I really want to graduate around 200,000 in debt. That might be hard to do, but I have been training all my life to be super cheap; and I hope to use those skills in med school :D

I plan to take out $60,000. But, like you, I hope to stay under $200,000. Is tuition the same for all four years? If it is, and tuition doesn't increase (highly doubted), then we owe ~$187,000 in tuition alone leaving only 13K for other spending. That would be tough.
tsdesai 04-10-2006, 02:47 AM yeah i think i'll take around 63,000 or so in loans. I'm curious though has anyone received any need-based grants or are there any need-based grants that the school offers to students?

CatsandCradles 04-11-2006, 03:23 PM Hi everyone.
If you haven't done so already, get your student health form in. It's located near the bottom of one of the pages on the WVSOM website and is sort of easy to miss. This is different from the Health and Technical Form.
It's a 3 page long physical - and chances are you'll have to get updated shots and vaccinations.

Hello fellow white water rafters!!! Here's the deal, I have been several times and have gone with several outfitters and USA Raft has the best rates. Their web site is http://www.usaraft.com
I am thinking we should shoot for either the lower New River or the middle or lower Gauley River. Depending on how many people want to come, we may get a $5-10.00 discount. The cost ranges from $60-70 for a Saturday trip and $45-60 for a Sunday-Friday trip. Trips range from 4-6 hours, which will be decent since we will doing a lot of paddeling and getting soaked!
The Gauley trips may book up fast, especially if we do a weekend trip, but the new River stays pretty open. So if people can let me know which trip you all want to do and which day of the week would be best I can e-mail USA raft and reserve our spot. I am thinking either the second of third week of July, but everyone let me know what you think and don't forget to check out the website!!!

Ya, the YMCA(smallest one I have ever seen) is just prob a mile west of the school, near the Greenbrier in and the Hampton Inn. I am sure there is some membership fee, but I'm sure it's not bad. One of the older guys I lifted with told me that some of the professors work out there. They have a lot of variety even if the equipment is kinda old. What to do between studying is a good question. I'll have to retire my discgolfing and start real golfing.

so is the Y decent enough for someone who lifts 4 times a week?
Xclone 04-13-2006, 12:51 PM so is the Y decent enough for someone who lifts 4 times a week?
Sure. I lift often and its fine for me. They have a lot of machines, but also free weights. They have a few flat benches, a incline bench, a decline bench, preacher curl, free bars, tricept pulldowns...I don't do legs much but they have a squat and some leg machines. They have all you will need. I don't think they have a pool, but I could be wrong. I was only in the weight area which is pretty small. It's a narrow building, so I doubt they have a pool but could be wrong.
I am gonna drive down to find a place to live May 7th or whenever this semester ends. You guys think there will still be good places to pick from?

Xclone 04-13-2006, 08:57 PM Hey I'm doing the Navy HPSP...have you decided what you're doing yet?
I am in the final steps of my application with the Air Force. I am still trying to decide on the 3 yr or 4 yr deal. Definitely a good deal financially.
Megalofyia 04-14-2006, 11:16 AM I dont think I've ever been in the school gym when more than 2 other people have been in there at the same time except when there are planned activities going on, eg. broomball, dodgeball, or basketball games.
The Y has access to a pool though one of the hotels near it. I'm not sure what the pool is like cause I haven't had a chance to check it out and I'm not a fan of indoor pools. If I knew that it was a decent lap pool then I might have made more of an effort but I suspect it's not. I think the Y mostly uses it for water aerobics.
We were told recently that they are going to add more gym equipment to the gym at the school. I'm not sure how they are going to fit this stuff in.. but they say they have a plan.

Would like the new apples that use the windows OP but they are kinda price but they are BADD!! I already have a pretty awesome desk top with a top notch MP3 collection so I got to take that at least just for my music!
We all should have a little get together in early august. Does any one else here have a my space account? I have gotten the my space bug and just wonderding if I am the only one!
Megalofyia 04-16-2006, 09:55 PM I had a toshiba laptop that worked decently well.. but with a malfunctioning space bar. Anyways I decided that was a good enough excuss to get a new laptop. As a result if anyone asks me what type of computer to get my suggestion is as light as you can find.
FutureDocDO 04-16-2006, 10:05 PM I've never had a laptop or the need for one. For those who currently have a laptop what is an ideal weight to be carrying it around to class everyday. I want a light laptop but I don't want to sacrifice screen size. Ideally, I want a 14" laptop. Most of them are around 5lbs.
Megalofyia 04-16-2006, 11:28 PM The panasonic is a 14.1" screen and 3.3 lbs.
That was the lightest I could find for that size.
I have classmates who got the largest screen they could possibly get. They have computers the size of a movie screen but they also have to lift weights in order to be able to carry their computers back and forth.
bbgirl 04-17-2006, 10:21 AM I think I'm going to keep mine as long as I can get the updates we need. It's not that old and I carried it around while writing my 250 page MS thesis. When it dies, I'll get a new one. That's $3000 saved from the proposed financial aid sheet.

As a result if anyone asks me what type of computer to get my suggestion is as light as you can find.
What kind of Toshiba laptop did you have? I'm thinking about getting a M satellite series notebook myself. Other than the problem with the space bar, did you notice anything else negative?
theresa83 04-17-2006, 02:49 PM I will be getting a new laptop because mine is kinda old and barely functioning. :( Not sure on the specs or which type. Most likely a dell.

It was in the satellite series. The space bar issue was because I was trying to clean the keyboard. I had removed the space bar and broke a tiny piece off that was needed to put it together.
