What do you guys think about England now giving out the names of sperm donors to their offspring when they are 18. I dont believe that this is retroactive (I cant imagine it would be). I think that it would be better to keep things as is, or at the very least let donors make the decision and then let the mother decide which sperm she wants (from the unknown or the future known).

My pathology professor is quite a charismatic guy...apparently you have to be with all of the interactions you have with other specialties. Of course, EM is the same with that respect is it not?

I am proud to say that the Path guys at my school are the ones who wrote the BRS and actually they are quite great teachers. The lead author Arthur S. Schneider (whose initials are ASS BTW) is a truly great guy, he has won the Golden Apple award for the past 3 yrs. He is really quite good at what he does.

BTW, I was wondering what do a lot of residents do for fun besides consume EtOH.

Actually talking about slides and histology comprises about 1% of the discussion. Most of the discussion centers around applicant issues. Some of the topics revolve around things that clinicians do that piss us off (like paging us :laugh: ). Oh wait, that last topic consists of me bitching and moaning about how much I hate a certain subset of work that I do in a given day.

I'm such a pathology loser that my husband abandoned me on thanksgiving, all so he could go shoot things. As for smelling, I believe that may be a trait inherent to the male pathologist as I smell of Jo Malone grapefruit cologne.

Yep. Engorged myself. Eating lighter today.

I think I'm about 1/3-1/2 done with my Christmas shopping...and with minimal effort.

All that craziness at Walmart! 2 Million people in their stores between 5-6am. People fighting, thank god I slept in til 930 am. Ill do my shopping on days where I am not interviewing and people arent around.

Oh, I slept in. If you wait until mid-afternoon & avoid the mall & other busy shopping areas it really isn't bad. I didn't encounter a crowd or long checkout line anywhere I went. :D

I also had gotten a few things before today.

Man by my in-laws is a huge mall and we had to run some non-shopping errands and the traffic was INSANE. I am glad I chose to do something else today and I am glad for your sake you slept in too.

I recommend waiting until you have the pooch and then letting it name itself. If you pre-name your dog, then you may be in for a whole lotta trouble. Case in point, back when I was younger and traveling around in an old VW, I wanted a dog named "Peace." So named the dog, then got it. But this pup was anything but peaceful.

Yeah-- my sister and I grew up in a really white neighborhood in Colorado so we could talk mad s*** about people around us in Spanish w/o them understanding. Definitely doesnt work in San Antonio or most other places now. My boyfriend is Russian so I look forward to having a new language I can be mean in. :)) Did you go to Russia on a 4th year rotation? I've heard there are some English rotations avail so it would be cool to get one of those and do some intensive language study at the same time.

For some reason I've been neglecting this thread. I'm caught up on the posts now and can continue to contribute. Usually these long ass threads get to be a conversation betwixt a couple of people and are a bore to read through, but you guys have managed to make it about nothing.

My wife and I use Swedish as our secret language, since only a (relatively) few number of people speak it. It is great to be able to discuss others right in front of them and not be understood. It backfired once, though. The person we were trying to avoid understanding us spoke Norwegian, which is similar. Luckily we we not bad-mouthing them, only discussing tangential things. :D

I think it is obvious that this is meant as somewhat of a joke. My parents speak a language my wife doesnt understand as well as one she does (English). They NEVER speak russian in front of her. That being said they sometimes slip, and when they do they apologize and translate. This comes in handy more so when you are negotiating a car deal, a house deal etc.

Have you been to Russia before? I really want to go there for a little while (maybe on 4th yr rotation) and learn how to gavorit the ruski.
I'm from Ukraine originally, and I can tell you that the ruski is pretty hard to learn... but that being said, from what i've heard from 4th years, many rotations over there don't require russian - so maybe they have translators for you? Jelayou vam shastya... (wish you luck) :D

Quid, I too was born in the Ukraine and I can everyone that it is a very hard language to learn. It is quite beautiful though, as my teacher in college told me it was meant to be sung rather than spoken. Russia is a beautiful place to visit.

The point is not use a secret language. Although the large egos on SDN don't see it, many people assume you are talking about them when you use a language they don't understand. That's not unreasonable, even if you're only making fun of a silly shirt.

Still working on my russian. I was basically illiterate even though it was my 1st language cause I came to the states before i turned 2. (I did get to live in Italy for 6 months). In college I learned how to read and write but I think I am probably at a 3rd grade level (maybe). Fortunately, my english is as good as anyone else.

Hmm, well, my english is certainly better than my Russian, but i'm pretty good with the russian (I came to the states when I was 8 - also after several months in austria and italy). I actually also took it in college, and yeah, my spelling is horrible.... and I mean HORRIBLE. But then again, it's not all that amazing in english either :p.

Been there, done that, Apollyon. I taught Spanish for ten years and every year I had several students tell me that they were learning more English grammar in my class than they were in English class. I also have trouble with Spanish speakers here understanding my Spanish. Of course, my problem is more that I learned Castillian and not a whole heck of a lot of Latin American slang, etc.

Your thread about the Brown Recluse Spider bites was interesting...we had a case in hemepath last month where a woman had been gardening and came in with a blister with surrounding erythema and some early necrosis. PCP diagnosed a spider bite, Brown Recluse (although i wasn't aware Brown Recluse lived in Michigan). Ordered a CBC to check for hemolysis. CBC showed an ANC of 0 and a single circulating blast. Turned out she had a granulocyte arrest of maturation from Bactrim she had been on for sinusitis, and the skin lesion was a Sweet's-syndrome like reaction, although without the mature neutrophils since she didn't have any mature neutrophils. Bone marrow biopsy showed increased cellularity and a bunch of promyelocytes, where they had stopped maturing. Bactrim was stopped, she returned to normal.

So keep that in the differential of "Spider bite." ;)

Very interesting, yaah. I saw a path-diagnosed case of Sweet's Syndrome last month on a family med rotation. It looked like a herpetic rash. When it didn't improve we biopsied it & go the dx.

This may be a thread of interest for the EM DOs and DO-lovers who don't wander into the medical student forums.

Wheel wells, doors, and any seams get hit and start rusting (unless the body panels are plastic or fiberglass!).

Athens with the wife. School was out anyhow. Cool little city. Strangely enough not much going on, I guess thats what happens when all the kids are out.

On another note, there isnt much going on in NW Ohio. Henry County to be exact. Had a good ole time at the family get together last night. Had one of my wifes uncles offer to let me buy some farmland and he would farm it for me. Now keep in mind I am a big city kid and I dont know the 1st thing about farming or farm land. Good time though.. Nothing like a get together at the local VFW. Archbold.. right sorry about that..

IMO it is only fun cause you can basically sleep while you drive. It is flat and straight. I prefer driving through mountains or hills or something like that.

Im in Chicago not too many meth labs here. I am from Miami though and I can tell you weed is a much bigger seller than the other stuff. Well coke is highly sought after as well. A little freebase man!

To help with the post padding.. Why dont we all say what we want for Xmas and hanukah and then after the holidays we can compare.

Ill start.. Well im jewish and for Hanukah we get money.. My wife isnt jewish so i will get a Xmas present. hmm so I think I i will get collar stays from my wife and im not sure what else.. I kind of dont need much so it prob will be hard for her. I told her for graduation I want "dr Shoes" you know the Dansko Clogs.. Maybe Ill get them early.

I got this really cute cashmere mock turtleneck that has been hanging my closet since my anatomy final (over a month ago). It taunts me each day (Wear me! Wear me!) but I have resisted thus far. I also am getting a pair of gray pants that I've already worn a few times already because none of my other dress pants fit due to the "anatomy lab diet" as I like to call it.

My dad said he'd let me order school supplies through his work (YAY - and don't b---- about me stealing from the company - he's self-employed) so that's a big Christmas present there - you should see how many highlighters I go through!!!

Compared to many months ago, path forum has reached a good steady state. Before there were lots of random posts which stimulated nonsensical discussion. Now, the only activity stems from anxiety regarding interviews and the Match.

So the name was kind of a joke because of this really funny looking picture we saw in 2nd yr of med school. It was an ectopic pregnancy with a fetus and the pic had the fallopian tube cut and the fetus' butt was in the air. I can find this picture. So we found it entertaining.. Somehow I became associated with this. It was about that time that I joined so.... the rest is history. I will see if I can find this pic.

No I never thought about OB.. It was the ONLY rotation 3rd yr I disliked.. Go figure..

For the post pad icon.. use the plus sign remove the quotations and you will see it.. it is "+"pad"+"

Also if you see the emoticons.. there is a more tab.. and there are clappies etc there too!

Let's do some math...you guys catch up by 25 posts each day. Now the difference is 4725. 4725 posts divided by 25 posts/day = 189 days = approx a little over half a year.

You guys will then have started residency by then and you'll be doing actual work. By that point you won't care anymore.

For movie reviews.. I saw Narnja, good movie not great. If you like seeing movies I would go see it. If you only have one movie to see this winter there is prob something better out there.
