EctopicFetus 11-20-2005, 02:49 PM We caught up by 5263 posts in 2 1/2 months!! WOW
I propose this whole thread to be a good reason for us to +pad+ as of today they have 33,766 and we have (not including this here post) 28,503, so we are down by 5263.
I think we should just post random, interesting and funny stories here and +pad+. Lets close the gap to 4K by Match Day! Surely we will all start a thread to discuss our interviews and match lists, then the match results! :p

What do you guys think about England now giving out the names of sperm donors to their offspring when they are 18. I dont believe that this is retroactive (I cant imagine it would be). I think that it would be better to keep things as is, or at the very least let donors make the decision and then let the mother decide which sperm she wants (from the unknown or the future known).

Why not contribute something as well. Perhaps a good drunken story from this weekend? or the like.. But of any post is better than no post!

Here's a related NON-EM thought, wouldn't it be funny if the sperm donor turned out to be some guy the mother had dated, but didn't have sex with because she thought he wasn't worthy..... :meanie:

We seem to have a relatively active EM applicant pool. If a decent chunk of the applicants stay on SDN as residents the "things I've learned from my patients" thread alone should keep us afloat. :D

Jambi 11-20-2005, 06:48 PM Not EM related but EMS related, I figured what the heck.
Called to eval a Pt with Right Elbow pain. Pt is under arrest for peeing on a hotel front desk, apparently the close bathroom was closed and the other one was 50 feet too far.
Pt: Don't step in the pee.
Me: Where?
Pt: there
Me: Thanks, Why is there pee on the ground?
Pt: I peed (sp?)
Me: oh, why on the ground?
Pt: I had to go
Me: What's wrong with the restroom?
Pt: They wouldn't take me?
Me: Why?
Pt: No body wanted to touch it.
Me: Touch what?
Pt: My Thing! (motions with head toward crotch)
Me: Your penis
Pt: Penis?
Me: that thing you pee out of.
Pt: Oh.
Me: Why did they need to touch "it."
Pt: Because they have these around my wrists
Me: Hand-cuffs
Pt: Hand-cuffs?
Me: yea, those metal things around your wrists.
Pt: Oh.
Me: What wrong today?
Pt: My elbow hurts
Me: Which one?
Pt: The right one
Me:The right one hurts?
Pt: yes.
Me: Why?
Pt: I had surgery.
Me: On what?
Pt: My elbow.
Me: The right one?
Pt: Yes.
Me: How long ago?
Pt: 6 months
Me: Does your elbow always hurt?
Pt: No.
Me: Well, It's probably not because of the surgery.
Pt: No?
Me: It's probably because of the hand-cuffs
Pt: Hand-cuffs?
Me: Yea, those metal things around your wrists
Pt: Oh.
Pt: How can I keep this pain from happening again?
Me: avoid hand-cuffs.
Pt: ????
Me: Don't pee on desks that aren't yours.
Pt: Oh.
I love it...

EctopicFetus 11-20-2005, 07:45 PM Man what a crappy weekend of football the good thing is that this week with turkey day and all there will be a lot of good interesting games... DropkickMurphy 11-20-2005, 08:11 PM Personally it would be a great week if there was no football. :)

My pathology professor is quite a charismatic guy...apparently you have to be with all of the interactions you have with other specialties. Of course, EM is the same with that respect is it not?
leviathan 11-21-2005, 12:49 AM I'm surprised there's been no Fatty McFattypants posts yet. :spam:
EctopicFetus 11-21-2005, 06:27 AM I am proud to say that the Path guys at my school are the ones who wrote the BRS and actually they are quite great teachers. The lead author Arthur S. Schneider (whose initials are ASS BTW) is a truly great guy, he has won the Golden Apple award for the past 3 yrs. He is really quite good at what he does.
BTW, I was wondering what do a lot of residents do for fun besides consume EtOH.

the peanut is a similar size to a pea and it is a nut.. Who said it isnt?

I got it. Just wanted to take the thread a different direction. I'm not a big fan of making fun of any other specialty in medicine. Well outside of surgery that is. Oh yeah and ob/gyn..... and rads....and .....oh screw this high road crap it's just no fun! If they call us prostitutes the let em have it.

DrQuinn 11-22-2005, 09:50 PM Anyone doing anything particularly cool (besides DMB) this weekend? or are most of the residents going to be working?
I am going on a cruise this Saturday - next Thurs (Dec 1st). I will unfortunately miss the first interviews at our progrma this season (Nov 30th). However, the day I get back, Dec 1st, I should know where I will be working!

There is no punchline.. It is simply something to think about.
BTW did anyone see that ugly dog Sam. He died as his owner put him down since he had heart failure. I will say that was one ugly ugly animal.
Quick joke... it is an optometry/ophtho joke.
So this guy calls his boss and says "I cant come in to work today cause I am sick. I have anal glaucoma." (stop me if you heard this before)... The boss says to him. "hmm weird I have never heard of that before. Will you be ok? What exactly is that?" The guy responds.. it means I dont see my ass coming into work today." :) :D

What's the deal with Corn Nuts anyway? Is it a corn, or is it a nut?
Jambi 11-23-2005, 04:07 PM Dead babies. :meanie:
Isn't this why gerber doesn't put pictures of babies on baby food in certain countries, the implication being that there is strained/cooked/mashed/ect baby in the jar.

Actually talking about slides and histology comprises about 1% of the discussion. Most of the discussion centers around applicant issues. Some of the topics revolve around things that clinicians do that piss us off (like paging us  ). I'm such a pathology loser that my husband abandoned me on thanksgiving, all so he could go shoot things. As for smelling, I believe that may be a trait inherent to the male pathologist as I smell of Jo Malone grapefruit cologne.
DrMom 11-24-2005, 12:34 PM Pingu, just think of how smelly your hubby will be when he returns.

We left our cat, "Pussy," with my parents when we had to move into a non-pet-friendly place for a few months. They renamed her "L.P" - short for "Little Puss." They just couldn't bring themselves to yell into the night "Pussy come here... here Pussy Pussy."

I recommend waiting until you have the pooch and then letting it name itself. If you pre-name your dog, then you may be in for a whole lotta trouble. Case in point, back when I was younger and traveling around in an old VW, I wanted a dog named "Peace." So named the dog, then got it. But this pup was anything but peaceful.
DrMom 11-27-2005, 12:29 PM I want to get a dog (and will when I move). Debating on what a good name would be. Anyhow I am looking forward to coming home and looking at my dog and saying Sup Dawg!

I like people names. My dog is Steve & one of my cats is Dave. The names really fit them, somehow. Next I want a Betty.

The person we were trying to avoid understanding us spoke Norwegian, which is similar. Luckily we we not bad-mouthing them, only discussing tangential things. :D

That is crass and very rude. Whenever I speak ANY language in front of others that don't (whether it's Spanish, French, German, or Chinese), I ALWAYS translate what I'm saying, for that same reason. My Spanish and French are good, and more people already understand them. My German and Chinese are piecemeal, but, even so, I still translate the little bit I know.
DrMom 12-03-2005, 02:40 PM I can mumble in many foreign languages.

EctopicFetus 12-03-2005, 10:26 PM I think it is obvious that this is meant as somewhat of a joke. My parents speak a language my wife doesnt understand as well as one she does (English). They NEVER speak russian in front of her. That being said they sometimes slip, and when they do they apologize and translate. This comes in handy more so when you are negotiating a car deal, a house deal etc.

I'm from Ukraine originally, and I can tell you that the ruski is pretty hard to learn... but that being said, from what i've heard from 4th years, many rotations over there don't require russian - so maybe they have translators for you? Jelayou vam shastya... (wish you luck) :D
EctopicFetus 12-04-2005, 12:29 PM Quid, I too was born in the Ukraine and I can everyone that it is a very hard language to learn. It is quite beautiful though, as my teacher in college told me it was meant to be sung rather than spoken. Russia is a beautiful place to visit.

The point is not use a secret language. Although the large egos on SDN don't see it, many people assume you are talking about them when you use a language they don't understand. That's not unreasonable, even if you're only making fun of a silly shirt.
And anyone who gets busted talking about someone else in another language deserves all the embarassment that can be doled out.

I learned more English grammar in Latin and French class than I ever did in any English class. My Spanish is completely self-taught, and a great irony is that many of our Spanish-speaking patients (who are almost uniformly Mexican and central American) have trouble understanding me because I am grammatically correct, which these people, who have had to work all their lives and have not been educated, do not know well.
It is unfortunate when people are not fluent in their native language.

Been there, done that, Apollyon. I taught Spanish for ten years and every year I had several students tell me that they were learning more English grammar in my class than they were in English class. I also have trouble with Spanish speakers here understanding my Spanish. Of course, my problem is more that I learned Castillian and not a whole heck of a lot of Latin American slang, etc.
Your thread about the Brown Recluse Spider bites was interesting...we had a case in hemepath last month where a woman had been gardening and came in with a blister with surrounding erythema and some early necrosis. PCP diagnosed a spider bite, Brown Recluse (although i wasn't aware Brown Recluse lived in Michigan). Ordered a CBC to check for hemolysis. CBC showed an ANC of 0 and a single circulating blast. Turned out she had a granulocyte arrest of maturation from Bactrim she had been on for sinusitis, and the skin lesion was a Sweet's-syndrome like reaction, although without the mature neutrophils since she didn't have any mature neutrophils. Bone marrow biopsy showed increased cellularity and a bunch of promyelocytes, where they had stopped maturing. Bactrim was stopped, she returned to normal.
So keep that in the differential of "Spider bite." ;)
DrMom 12-06-2005, 07:38 PM Very interesting, yaah. I saw a path-diagnosed case of Sweet's Syndrome last month on a family med rotation. It looked like a herpetic rash. When it didn't improve we biopsied it & go the dx.

Salt damage from it being spread on roads is about 10X worse than that which you get from living by the ocean - or, put the other way, the damage you see oceanside from salt is about 1/10th of what you get from driving on it when it's put down for ice.
Wheel wells, doors, and any seams get hit and start rusting (unless the body panels are plastic or fiberglass!).

southerndoc 12-17-2005, 01:35 PM BTW +pad+ I have traveled like crazy this week. In the last 2 weeks I have been in Chicago (home) to St Louis to Orlando to Atlanta, to Athens, GA to Chicago then to Tucson then to Chicago and then to Ohio where I am now.. Not all of those were for interviews but they were tiresome nonetheless.
Why were you in Athens, GA? Aren't you interviewing for emergency medicine residency?

Hey - I was BORN in Napoleon, Ohio. :p Napoleon is a lot closer to civilization than some of the other places I've lived in Northwest Ohio.

Oh wait . . . you were just kidding. ;) +pad+
Annette 12-17-2005, 04:59 PM There are towns besides Toledo in northwest Ohio? Oh, wait, does Toledo qualify as a town?
A general travel warning- be wary of sharp metal objects in the drive way of strip clubs! Flat tires are a PITA!
EctopicFetus 12-17-2005, 09:43 PM Why were you in Athens, GA? Aren't you interviewing for emergency medicine residency?
Not there for an interview and like I mentioned not all of my trip was for MY interviews... I was there with the wife.. Cant a guy have a little fun? :)

Hi Steve. The first part of gaining control of your life is admitting that you have a posting problem.
We'll introduce you to the 12-step process of controlling your posting habits, but we haven't came up with the other 11 steps.

Fun, in Athens? With or without the wife? (There are some really hot girls in Athens, so without the wife would be more fun, albeit more dangers. haha)
Emergency! 12-18-2005, 08:38 AM There are towns besides Toledo in northwest Ohio? Oh, wait, does Toledo qualify as a town?
This leads to one of my pet peeves . . . . Usually when I tell somebody I'm from northwest Ohio, they say "Oh, you mean Toledo?" There are 60 miles of Ohio WEST of Toledo, people! ;)
Another minor pet peeve: It's ARCHBOLD, pronounced exactly like it looks. You can always tell the non-natives - they are the ones who pronounce it ArchIbAld.
Some NWOhio trivia that none of you care about . . . The Etch-A-Sketch (Ohio Art) and Dum-dum lollipop (Spangler's Candy) are both by companies based in Bryan.

EctopicFetus 12-18-2005, 02:54 PM Athens with the wife. School was out anyhow. Cool little city. Strangely enough not much going on, I guess thats what happens when all the kids are out.
On another note, there isnt much going on in NW Ohio. Henry County to be exact. Had a good ole time at the family get together last night. Had one of my wifes uncles offer to let me buy some farmland and he would farm it for me. Now keep in mind I am a big city kid and I dont know the 1st thing about farming or farm land. Good time though.. Nothing like a get together at the local VFW. Archbold.. right sorry about that..

EctopicFetus 12-19-2005, 05:30 PM Annette what about driving through there do you like?
IMO it is only fun cause you can basically sleep while you drive. It is flat and straight. I prefer driving through mountains or hills or something like that.

I kind of dont need much so it prob will be hard for her. I told her for graduation I want "dr Shoes" you know the Dansko Clogs.. Maybe Ill get them early.
SoCuteMD 12-20-2005, 09:11 AM I got this really cute cashmere mock turtleneck that has been hanging my closet since my anatomy final (over a month ago). It taunts me each day (Wear me! I also am getting a pair of gray pants that I've already worn a few times already because none of my other dress pants fit due to the "anatomy lab diet" as I like to call it.
My dad said he'd let me order school supplies through his work (YAY - and don't b---- about me stealing from the company - he's self-employed) so that's a big Christmas present there - you should see how many highlighters I go through!!!

Is path really that active? Do they have a lot of posters or is it just a few people making all the posts? Tons of post pads?
Maybe I should venture to the path forum and do a little intelligence gathering.
Then again, maybe we should spread the word to our EM colleagues about this wonderful thing called the SDN EM Forums!

Compared to many months ago, path forum has reached a good steady state. Before there were lots of random posts which stimulated nonsensical discussion. Now, the only activity stems from anxiety regarding interviews and the Match.
Maybe I should venture to the path forum and do a little intelligence gathering.

SubstanceP Lucky for you ;) I have some free time.
So the name was kind of a joke because of this really funny looking picture we saw in 2nd yr of med school. It was an ectopic pregnancy with a fetus and the pic had the fallopian tube cut and the fetus' butt was in the air. I can find this picture. So we found it entertaining.. Somehow I became associated with this. It was about that time that I joined so.... the rest is history. I will see if I can find this pic.
No I never thought about OB.. It was the ONLY rotation 3rd yr I disliked.. Go figure..

Let's do some math...you guys catch up by 25 posts each day. Now the difference is 4725. 4725 posts divided by 25 posts/day = 189 days = approx a little over half a year.
You guys will then have started residency by then and you'll be doing actual work. By that point you won't care anymore.
