mj1878 12-01-2005, 02:17 AM Hey all! I'm thrilled to be attending this school. Who else is out there? We should organize a pre-orientation week get-together or something, shouldn't we? Especially for those of us that aren't native to California(myself included). Congratulations to everyone.
What struck you most positively about the interview/tour/school? Why did we pick it?

Hey MJ!
Well I am pretty sure I will be going to Touro next year. I am really excited about this upcoming year. The thing that took the cake for me was 1st the LOCATION, strong match list and the positive interview experience. My interview group seemed like a great group of people and if the people that they are accepting are like them, then I am stoked. Anyways that is pretty much it for now, I am still trying to get used to saying that I am going to go to touro. More later... Hopefully more people will join us.
mj1878 12-06-2005, 05:50 AM Thanks for the reply! I was starting to think that no one from Touro used SDN! I think that if Dr. Haight hand-picks the classes, that we're going to have a good one, at least based on the folks that were in my interview group! We'll keep each other posted on updates, and congrats!
Marc
ScOrPiO2983 12-06-2005, 09:34 AM Hey guys,
I'm most likely going to be attending TUCOM in the fall as well! I interviewed on the second interview date and was accepted. I'm excited because I really wanted to stay in California! I was starting to think that Touro people didn't use SDN either which I found really strange! Well at least there's a couple people on here who'll be there next year! :)
I actually think touro sets up a group site for the classes, so hopefully there will be more people. Dr. Haight said that they are up 20% in number of applicants from last year, which is unheard of, so I am sure more will come. So what's up with you guys, where did you graduate, live etc.?
I grew up in good ol Reno, NV, but then spent the last 5 years in San Diego going to school and pretending I was a surfer. Before school I plan on getting a job and pay of this massive debt I have incurred from this "fun" application process, then if all goes as plan travel in mexico and central america for a couple of months. I am going to try and get fully refreshed before all the good times begin.
Have you guys considered where you are going to live yet? I have no clue, but I heard Benicia is nice... Anyways.
ScOrPiO2983 12-06-2005, 03:04 PM Oh I didn't know that Touro sets up a group site. I am hoping that they will be changing their main website too...I think that it turns away a lot of people and doesn't give a good impression of the school. But I remember Dr. Haight mentioning that they were aware of that and in the process of making it better!
I grew up in Fremont (Northern CA), about an hour away from Vallejo. I went to school at UCLA which was a nice change and graduated in June. I moved back to Fremont in July and am working at a hospital nearby. I wanna travel a bit before starting school but that all depends on how much I can save in the meantime, so we'll see.
As far as places to live...I have no clue but hopefully will figure that out later on! I've been wondering how hard it will to find roommates and a place to live nearby. Hopefully we'll be able to meet or contacts other people in our class to make it easier.
MJ....i guess u're the only other person goin so far...so where are u from??
mj1878 12-06-2005, 04:39 PM I grew up in Colorado, did a study abroad in Mexico, where I met my wife, who was on a Regent Scholarship in Nebraska, so I moved out to be with her. I've been here for about three years now. I miss the mountains.
I was a Spanish major, premed minor in undergrad. I found the Spanish to be a nice break from all of the science prereqs and the "premed" mentality; I'm sure you know what I mean. I just didn't really relish hanging out with the gunners. I'm really looking forward to getting away from cold weather for awhile, although we'll probably end up settling down somewhere where my wife can attend an Ivy League grad. school(we have this deal where she agrees to move wherever I attend medical school, and I agree to move wherever she decides to go to graduate school).

Hey there everyone!
I just put in my gigantic deposit and will be attending touro next fall. I am actually in Berkeley so I was able to drive up for my interview, go up look at the areas, check out the school and talk to alot of students. I am from Colorado too, went to UCSB, grew up in Arvada. I will post later, see ya and talk to ya later.
mj1878 12-06-2005, 09:34 PM ----Sorry to cut the last post short. Anyway, I was browsing the Touro "Current Students" site, and found the list of "required equipment", and put a lot of it on my Christmas list. Looks like they picked out a pretty nice stethoscope. I read that LECOM hands out stethoscopes during the white coat ceremony. Wow, because the ones they give out are $180.00. It'd be nice if Touro did that.
I was a nurse aide in a Telemetry unit for over two years, so naturally Cardiology is pretty interesting to me; the work is fascinating. I am currently a phlebotomist in the county hospital; tonight the ER is actually kind of busy with high acuity, low volume. The rest of my extracurriculars are on my mdapplicants.com site, in my signature.
Raise your hand if you hope that they have the wireless internet up and running by the time we matriculate!
Have a fun few months leading up to orientation, and we'll keep in contact, I'm sure!

Scorpio,
Here is the link. (http://webmedbooks.com/Touro/default.aspx)
It's from the www.tumi.edu website, then "current students", then "bookstore". There's also some stuff on the website like Mare Island Student Life, found here. (http://misl.neloi.com/)

Cool...thanks for the site! I didn't realize there was so much we would have to buy before starting...more bills...oye!!
Hey, so what do you guys plan on doing between now and the start of med school? It would be nice to take some time off and travel - may be our last chance to do it!
mj1878 12-07-2005, 02:03 PM Ogre, so what's the story of your life? Introduce yourself, if you don't mind. :)
My wife and I made a month-long trip to Europe this past summer (Madrid, Paris, Lyon, London), so we don't feel a ton of pressure to get out in the world. We'd travel more, if we could, but we're kind of in "buckle down financially, because we're about to have NO money" mode.
Let's keep it rolling!
Thanks MJ for the link. Welcome to all the new people. To answer ogre guestion, definitely going to do the traveling thing. First have to get out of debt then I am off, hopefully untill the start of july. I'll have to see how much money I can save in the next 3 months.
mj1878 12-08-2005, 07:21 AM So I was looking at a "cost of living" site, and found that Benicia is actually cheaper to live in than where we are now(Lincoln Nebraska). Anyone from Cali get this vibe, or is the site totally off its rocker?
ScOrPiO2983 12-08-2005, 09:47 AM I'm from CA but don't know too much about how much the Benecia area is...I'm surprised that it's cheaper than where you currently are thought! But good for us poor med students :)

I visited Benecia last weekend b/c i've never been, really one of those places that you would never go unless you had to. Anyways, a really nice little town. I thought everywhere up there (north of Berkeley) was a little shady but Benecia is actually quite nice, safe, view of bay, great weather, and cheap, i dont know about compared to lincoln, i grew up in CO and it would probably be close to CO. 2 bedroom for 1000 or less. Also, about 15 min from school, talked with a local and there is hardly any traffic that far north of san fran.
Vallejo is a different story, 5-10 min away from Touro, not as nice, but as a couple locals pointed out that its getting better. Its really like any place, LA, Chicago, good parts and bad, and anywhere in CA is your car up to being broken in to .
What is everyone thinking about living situations? I was at TUCOM a couple of times post interview and thought living on that island right next to school i would get 'cabin fever', for me, i think it would be a toss-up between vallejo and benecia. well, any other q's i'd be happy to answer and if anyone is going to visit let me know, maybe i can help out!
MasterShakeDO 12-09-2005, 05:18 PM Congrats guys on getting in and looking forward to meeting you all next year!
I live in Glen Cove, an upscale neighborhood of Vallejo. I ended up renting a house we found on craigslist with 3 other 1st years. I recommend that area and Benicia is very nice and safe as well, with more to do. downtown 1st street area is awesome with farmer's markets, restaurants, and shopping. It was something like the 83rd best city to live in America this year's us news

Master,
about what do you pay for rent with 3 other roomates? How big is your apt, is it nice, parking?
Just curious, thanks.
MasterShakeDO 12-12-2005, 07:19 PM We average 500 apiece, 4 bedroom house, not sure the square footage but it's more space than we use. 3 car garage is nice, though I'm the one who parks in the driveway =)
Well it is OFFICIAL just sent in the 2g deposit. Feels good, but also stings a little. Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be there for sure!!!!! Talk to you all later. D

I made that painful "little" withdrawal as well. I guess we'll meet up at the white coat ceremony, eh? You know, when you're not accepted yet (you're neck-deep in the applications process, waiting for schools to finally look at your application, praying for an interview, praying for a good result), getting into medical school seems like the most impossible feat; lately I've been looking back and thinking to myself that it wasn't that hard. Anyone else feel this way a little bit?

When did you get set up with these other students, summer or after orientation? Thanks for all your info, 500/month sound nice albeit 3 other roomates.

I'm coming home!
Got my email from Dr. Haight today, and I'll be sending my deposit as soon as I have the real letter in hand. I'm originally from CA, and am thrilled to be heading back to the left coast (I live in Baltimore, MD now).
I had acceptances from both LECOM campuses before my interview at TUCOM, and only went because I already had the plane tickets and my mom was coming to meet me for the weekend. I was having a hard time deciding between Erie and Bradenton, but it became abundantly clear that Touro was where I should be. Not really sure what it was... just a vibe, I guess. funny how things work out in the long run!

yay! it's starting to get exciting. already decided that my last day of work is 6/30. can't effing wait!
ok, so me. I'm 23, graduated from Mills College in Oakland, CA in 2004, with a degree in women's studies. Right now I'm getting a masters in women's studies at Towson University in MD. I'm a big nerd, and my research interests are the medicalization of childbirth and contraceptive decision making in women. I run a women's health clinic in Baltimore. Love love love my job. but can't wait to get to the part where I'm the doctor instead of the administrator. obviously, I want to be an ob/gyn when I grow up. I like long walks on the beach, candlelit dinners, and... ahem.
anyway, that's me in a nutshell.

Nerdgrrl ... congrats to you and everyone else in our interview group there on Monday, 12/5. I was the guy in uniform. I took an acceptance at VCOM and withdrew my application to Touro on 12/7 due to several reasons involving practicality, logistics, family, etc etc. I loved Touro and would have enjoyed going there (which I expressed in an email to Dr. Haight) but VCOM just had a better fit with my personal preferences and needs. Any idea of who else from our group of 10 interviewees got in?
Congrats and best of luck to everyone next year!

No idea who got in. Emails just came out yesterday, so I guess it's a bit soon for everyone to be announcing. Did you have a nice rest of your trip?

Sure did. It was sort-of a second honeymoon, as my wife and I went to SF on our real honeymoon years ago. It was really fun finding some of the same hole-in-the-wall eateries still open for business as we went down memory lane.
Oh, of course, she took advantage of shopping at Macy's and other stores on Union Square while I was at the interview.
SotaBGirl 12-23-2005, 05:50 PM Hello all! Well, the good news arrived today... TUCOM-MI class of 2010!!! What an amazing feeling to finally be done with this whole process and know it was all worth it! One email and my world fell into place - so crazy :)
I look forward to chating with you all in the coming months ~ Happy Holidays!
billytoanle 12-26-2005, 04:27 AM Hi guys, my name is Billy and it's my first time here.
I interviewed in September 2005 and turned in my deposit a week after that. So I guess will see you all there. Can't wait!
Oh yeah I am currently attending UC Irvine, any one heard of it? or live near me?
KEPDO 12-27-2005, 03:53 PM Hey Future Touro DO's
I'm in the class of '09 and was reading about some of you planning to buy text books. My best advice is not too just yet. After one semester I used two of the required texts. And then only to check the spelling of a word. If i could do it over again I would wait until you meet your Big Sib and get text books from them, check out board reveiw series texts rather than the gianormous ones our Profs recommend. Also as far as instruments go a stethescope and BP cuff are all we needed for the first semester. Shop around for books: half.com and allheart.com for instruments also try using the Mare Island Website and the Touro Student Used book exchange. You probably won't get more info until this summer about what is to come. Enjoy your time off and get ready to learn a LOT really really fast!!
Take Care and Happy Holidays

Hope everyone had a very merry x-mas and have an awesome new year! And thanks for the advice from the c/o 2009 students! :) :D
Jus a quick question...when does the mailin list for the class start and when does the school start sending new students info? Also, when do we find out who our Big Sibs are?? Thanks!

The mailing list for the class starts late in the Spring. You get new info depending on when you accepted a seat in the class because interviews don't usually end 'til June. So some students get info ahead of others. As for Big Sibs, last year we didn't get them until July because it took a while to get students paired up with 2nd years. So it'll depend on whoever will be in charge of organizing it next upcoming year when that'll be set up.

Hey!
Congrats on the acceptance. I will be at Touro as well in the fall and also want to do OB... actually thinking about GYN ONC but not sure how that will work out so in the meantime I am just excited about getting to be a doctor soon!!!!!
Can't wait to start but I am enjoying making money until then :P

gyn onc would be interesting. then again, the day that our doc diagnosed the first endometrial cancer we'd seen in our office, I went home and cried. in the end, I'm way more interested in primary care. I probably should have been a nurse midwife, but I want to be able to do c-sections and abortions and all the other gyn surgery. so yeah, no gyn onc for me.
what are you doing for money making? I just decided to quit my job a month earlier than I originally planned. I figure I'll be poor for the next ten years, why not start a month earlier?
SotaBGirl 01-01-2006, 03:46 PM Hello classmates - Happy New Year! Where do you think you are going to live? I didn't get to see the dorms on my tour, but from what the students said... they are questionable. Guess it matters what you want. I am probably going to get a place off campus.
Also wondering when everyone is planning on moving? So far I gave notice at work for the beginning of July so I can travel a little before moving. I wonder if we will have any extra time during orientation to get settled.

I went to college in Oakland, and I'd LOVE to live there again, but alas, the commute is much too far. I'm thinking probably benicia or vallejo proper. Definitely off campus though, and I'm crossing my fingers for finding a one bedroom that only costs and arm, instead of an arm and a leg. I'm driving from Baltimore around 6/20, heading to my Aunt's in Oakland, and looking for something, then I'll be off to visit family for the rest of July.
mj1878 01-02-2006, 01:20 AM Any current students care to post the first semester curriculum? Thanks if you do!!
For those that live out of the state, did you know that AACOM does business with a moving firm that gets osteopathic medical students a 50-60% discount on moving services(loading, unloading, moving vehicles, etc.). I am going to call the service this week, so I'll keep you posted on costs, etc., in case you have a LOT of stuff (stuff, vehicles, pets, etc.) like me to move out a long way!

At the interview, we were told that they were changing to a systems based curriculum next year, which means that our curriculum will be different than the current students'.
Awesome on the moving company. I've been pricing companies, and everything is upwards of $3000. which I'm pretty sure is more than my stuff is worth. ugh!!
KEPDO 01-02-2006, 09:27 AM Hi again guys
They are changing your curriculum next year but you can check on the website under the link for current students to see what we have and are facing. I was under the impression that the systems based approach was still being worked out but if they gave you the impression that it was definite so be it. After talking with faculty and other friends based on the same approach, this one seems a bit overwhelming at first but in the long run you spend less class time and more learning time.. always a plus! Just make sure to keep up with the info you learn early on come COMLEX time. As for living, I live in the dorms and rather like it. Its sort of a family feel, there is a communal kitchen and you meet a lot of upperclassmen and form a tight friendship base with the people living there. So far I'm really happy with that experience. As far as living in Vallejo, there are some not so nice places so be aware of where you place that deposit, there are new homes on the island that are renting out rooms to students, also tons of inlaw cottages as well as your classmates who might be buying homes and willing to rent out rooms. I can't emphasize the MISL website enough for those particulars (the link can be found from the tucom mi website). A ton of second years with their own families and single live in Benecia and that town is adorable gives you a nice sense of home away from school. Even still there are some students that commute from Fairfield (about 30 minutes give or take) And some further away in Vacaville (I'm originally from there and the commute can vary from 40-60 min). Hope this helps, I'm off to read for anatomy (yes they gave us homework over our break)
SotaBGirl 01-02-2006, 11:02 AM Thank you so much for the living information, but if you have time I have a few more ?'s... How big are the dorm rooms? What kind of storage space is there? What exactly is an inlaw cottage?
Marc - Thank you so much for the moving company tip... what was the name? Using a moving company is so nice. When I moved back from Boston the hospital I work for now set-up my move, and it was wonderful to not have to do it all myself!! And if we get a deal, I may have to find the money to take the stress off of moving.
I have to get back to work... have a great day! :)
mj1878 01-02-2006, 03:32 PM At the interview, we were told that they were changing to a systems based curriculum next year, which means that our curriculum will be different than the current students'.
Awesome on the moving company. I've been pricing companies, and everything is upwards of $3000. which I'm pretty sure is more than my stuff is worth. ugh!!
Here is the info on the moving service! (http://www.aacom.org/moving.html)

sorry its going to be a short reply lab tomorrow early must sleeeeep
dorm rooms vary as first years you get last pick (sorry) make sure to be on top of the housing situation it was by sheer luck that a few of us got the rooms. dorms are just one bedroom with your own bath, furniture provided its old but its here. if your near vallejo and want to take a look just let me know. my roomate is one of the tour guides, maybe youve met her. an inlaw cottage is just a one or two room mini home with a kitchenette and the base necesities. i'd also advise checking out the campus one more time at least and looking at the living bulletins posted as well as waiting for the list serve to be set up and making friends/roomates that way.
happy new year
nerdgrrl 01-08-2006, 07:25 AM Just got my, "thanks for your deposit, don't forget you need to send us another $1000 by may" letter! Also included in that latter, was information about the listserv, etc. and it said that we would be receiving information about orientation, academic calendar, physical exam and immunization requirements, etc in late april, early may. I'm irritated by this. They must realize that people will be travelling and such. Is there any reason they can't give us that information with a little more time? I think I'll give the school a call next week and maybe get some general guidelines.
anyway, just venting.

I'm with you, I am going to be gone april till the first of july. I wanted to try and get everything lined up as soon as possible. O well, I'm sure they will let us work something out.
SotaBGirl 01-08-2006, 01:01 PM How long after you sent your deposit did you get the letter. I did my deposit over the phone and I am worried... I haven't seen it go through my account yet. I know I should not worry - they said everything was all set, but what if??? As for the knowing more... I completely agree. I am so excited and just want to know more. I check this forum 10x a day just to find out more about our class=)

My check still hasn't cleared either (sure does make my checking account look pretty while it's still sitting there though!). I overnighted it to them a little over a week ago, they should have gotten it Friday 12/30, got the letter Saturday 1/7. So, just a few days, I guess. I'd say drop Dr. Haight an email. He seems to be happy to help with that kind of thing.
KendoDO 01-09-2006, 02:06 AM Hi all, grats on getting in to TUCOM, I am in the process of purchasing a 4 bedroom 2.5 bathroom condo in Vallejo. It is in a pretty good area and it is about 4.17 miles from school. I will be looking for two roomates. I am from the Bay Area and checked the place out, it is very nice, there are no bars on the windows or anything and I checked the crime rate out, it is very low. The place is also 2 level and there is also nice brick patio. Please contact me if you are interested.
In terms of roomates I am looking for people who are clean, as in I won't have to be doing maid service instead of cramming  , other than that just hit me up and we can discuss the details.
Later,
Matt
ScOrPiO2983 01-10-2006, 10:53 AM Hi guys! I know a couple of you mentioned contacting Dr. Haight about getting information before April/May. I was wondering if anyone actually e-mailed him and what his response was. I didn't want to bug him if people had already asked him about it. Thanks!
SotaBGirl 01-12-2006, 12:02 PM Ok fellow classmates... we are falling down the list here! I have a story...
This is ridiculous, but last night I finally packed up all of my holiday decorations (I know... its almost the middle of Jan) and I thought - the next time I see all this - I will be in CA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just thought I would share! Have a good day!
mj1878 01-13-2006, 10:05 PM Hey all---
I feel a little like this thread has stalled, so I thought I'd juice it up a bit. Can you believe it's been over 40 days already since we started this? How fast are the next 7 months going to fly by? It's scary, in a way.
Anyway, I thought everyone could answer some "Getting to know you" questions! I'll get the ball rolling.
1)What was your favorite undergraduate class or classes?
As sacreligious as it sounds, Organic Chemistry I and II were among my favorite classes in undergrad. If they had offered a bunch of advanced Organic classes (and if I had had the time) I would have taken them all. I just seemed to click with it, unlike, say, Physics. Bleh. I also liked my composition classes, because I love to write.
2)What was your undergraduate major?
Spanish.
3)What made you choose TUCOM over other schools?
The location, great weather, intimate-feeling campus, great match lists, and newness of the campus. Also, I think that you can tell a lot about a school by their admissions office. As many of you will agree, not all admissions offices are created equal, and Dr. Haight was exceptional.
4)What are you most excited about for the upcoming year as a first year medical student?
I'm excited for pretty much everything. I don't relish the thought of suddenly not being able to see patients, but from what I gathered, there are opportunities for extracurricular patient contact, like in clinic situations(like the one that the university owns). I was a nurse aide for over two years, and am currently a phlebotomist at the trauma center, where I have been working the past almost three years. Before all that, I was a volunteer in an ER for two years. The thought of not seeing a patient for two contiguous years makes me cringe.
5)What are you most nervous about?
I tend to be pretty insecure academically, even though I always do fine. Medical school seems pretty daunting, but not impossible. The nice thing about Touro will be the nurturing environment and noncompetitive feel.
6)What specialty are you considering?
I was a nurse aide on a Telemetry unit, so I got to converse and watch cardiologists every day. The work is fascinating and dynamic. I'd also consider internal medicine, I think. Who knows until rotations!
7)What's your favorite band?
Dave Matthews Band. I grew up in Denver/Boulder, so there was no chance of not liking them. I also like the Gypsy Kings, Dido, Nickel Creek.
8)List some of your favorite movies
Thirteen Days, The American President, Batman Begins, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
SotaBGirl 01-14-2006, 12:06 AM ok... why did this post 10x???? sorry
SotaBGirl 01-14-2006, 12:08 AM ok... why did this post 10x???? sorry
SotaBGirl 01-14-2006, 12:09 AM ok... why did this post 10x???? sorry
SotaBGirl 01-14-2006, 12:12 AM Nice... I'll take the bait!
1)What was your favorite undergraduate class or classes?
So undergrad was along time ago, but Medical Ethics still sticks out. I love getting into the details of a case and thinking about what I would do when no options really exist.
2)What was your undergraduate major?
Biology with a post-bacc in Radiation Therapy
3)What made you choose TUCOM over other schools?
I like that there are other professional schools on campus, that at the interview I was able to show my passion for my patients and for medicine without being worried about sounding cliche',and of course... location.
4)What are you most excited about for the upcoming year as a first year medical student?
I don't even know where to start! I didn't think it was possible, but I get more and more excited each day - at the hospital everyone says they are waiting for me to burst! I can't wait to be sitting there the first day, looking around at everyone and have it finally be happening - really happening. I get chills just thinking about it.
5)What are you most nervous about?
Mj I agree... I am worried about not seeing patients (my inspiration) for such a long time. I have read other posts where students say they don't have the time, but I am going to have to volunteer or something. I have been in the clinic now for about five years, not including my years as a nursing assistant while in undergrad... but I guess this is the way things go:confused:
Academically I am apprehensive about the block schedule... with a finals-type week around every corner. That and I know they say everything financial will be taken care of, but I have been getting a paycheck for a long time now... I am nervous. Actually this is going to be the first time since I was 14 I will not have a job!
Other things... forgetting how to start an IV, take an x-ray or worst case scenario - forgetting what it was like before I became a medical student.
6)What specialty are you considering?
I am thinking peds or peds/medicine right now. Currently my patient population includes all ages, so I am a little worried I will miss the relationship that I am able to develop with older patients. Everyone says they switch in school, so I will keep an open mind. Its funny... I can say which I am not interested in: surgery, derm, neuro or psych.
mj - I too was an NA on a telemetry unit... great patients!
7)What's your favorite band?
New artists I have been listening to... James Blunt & KT Tunstall
As for bands... I love the local live music scene
8)List some of your favorite movies
Remember the Titans, Love Actually, Wedding Signer
******* one more question to add**********
9)List what you like to do outside of medicine (there has to be at least one thing)
Inline skate racing - currently most of my races are in the mid-west or along the east coast... but San Fran has a lot of opportunity, so I hope I can continue to skate a little.
mj1878 01-14-2006, 01:02 AM 9)What do you like to do outside of medicine?
Golf (which is good, since there's a golf course right on campus), reading, basketball, watching movies, writing, and more golf. :D
nerdgrrl 01-14-2006, 07:03 PM 1)What was your favorite undergraduate class or classes?
I feel like undergrad was a lifetime ago... but history of women in america, and feminist social ethics were among my favorites.
2)What was your undergraduate major?
women's studies, minors in history and chemistry; also getting a masters in women's studies, concentration women and health
3)What made you choose TUCOM over other schools?
I went to college in the bay area and miss it desperately. I'm really looking forward to being a six hour drive from my family rather than a six hour flight. and, I really felt like Touro wanted me, rather than just tolerating me, which was the feeling I got from some other schools.
4)What are you most excited about for the upcoming year as a first year medical student?
I'm most excited about finally being in med school. It's like this elusive thing I've been working toward for quite some time, and now it's really real.
5)What are you most nervous about?
Not seeing patients. I run a women's health clinic now, and I know all the patients, and know all their stories. I'm going to miss that, while I'm in school, as well as afterwards.
6)What specialty are you considering?
ob/gyn, and that's really the only one I'm considering! It's all I've studied for the last six years, and it's what all of my work experience has been in. It just makes sense to me!
7)What's your favorite band?
My favorite musicians are Edie Carey and Holly Figueroa, favorite band is Carbon Leaf
8)List some of your favorite movies
When Harry Met Sally, Peter Pan, Legally Blonde... I like sappy romantic comedies and really bad teenager movies!
9)List what you like to do outside of medicine (there has to be at least one thing)
I knit. A lot. Some weekends, that's all I do! I'm also a big yoga person.
1)What was your favorite undergraduate class or classes?
It would have to be immunology and latin dance
2)What was your undergraduate major?
Biology and Psych minor
3)What made you choose TUCOM over other schools?
Location, California, Match, Blocks
4)What are you most excited about for the upcoming year as a first year medical student?
Like everyone, finally getting started!
5)What are you most nervous about?
How much I am going to be in debt and lack of time
6)What specialty are you considering?
Have no idea...
7)What's your favorite band?
Dave, John Mayer, Jake Johnson, Sin Bandera
8)List some of your favorite movies
Shawshank Redemption, Dumb and Dumber, Garden State, everything Adam Sandler
9)List what you like to do outside of medicine (there has to be at least one thing)
Anything outdoors, Soccer, Surfing, Backpacking, Triathlons, Traveling!!!
ScOrPiO2983 01-20-2006, 10:12 AM 1)What was your favorite undergraduate class or classes?
Although most people will disagree with me, I really liked O-Chem. I hated General chem though! And my other favorite class was Macroeconomics.
2)What was your undergraduate major?
Biology
3)What made you choose TUCOM over other schools?
I wanted to stay in California and since I spent 4 years in LA, I figured it was time to return to the Bay Area. Although the campus isn't the prettiest, I like the area and felt comfortable during the interview day.
4)What are you most excited about for the upcoming year as a first year medical student?
I'm excited to just be starting (like most others). The road to getting into med school was so long, it's nice to actually be able to start.
5)What are you most nervous about?
Jus getting through everythin....the workload seems scary!
6)What specialty are you considering?
I'm considering ER since I've interned at the ER and really enjoyed it. I also got my EMT license a few months ago and really enjoyed the class. But it's just a thought and a lot can change once I go through clinicals.
7)What's your favorite band?
I don't really have a favorite because I'll listen to pretty much everything...but I do really like Greenday.
8)List some of your favorite movies
The Ring, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Serendipity, Momento...bascially anything funny or scary!
9)List what you like to do outside of medicine (there has to be at least one thing)
Swimming, reading, watching TV, hanging out with my friends, ice skating, traveling and seeing new places!
bnoosha 01-21-2006, 01:11 PM So I officially receieved my letter of acceptance for Tucom-CA class of 2010 yesterday.
I'm so Excited.
I will be joining all you of you in AUgust, and I think its great that we have this class thread started.
So I will go ahead and contribute some information about myself.
1)What was your favorite undergraduate class or classes?
I loved almost every biology course I took at UCI, but I would have to say that Anatomy was great.
2)What was your undergraduate major?
Biology
3)What made you choose TUCOM over other schools?
I only applied to TUCOM and Western, and I primarily chose TUcom because of its location. I'm from Southern Cali and wanted to live up north for a bit, and my BF goes to Dental School in SF so I wanted to move up and be closer to him. Also i have haerd really good things about tucom and got a great feeling when I visted.
4)What are you most excited about for the upcoming year as a first year medical student?
I'm just excited to start, as many of you have already said. I applied really last minute (in like nov) and I am just so happy to be able to start medical school in Aug. I cant wait to get to know other class members, and finally get one step closer to becoming a doctor.
5)What are you most nervous about?
Of course I am nervous about the workload and the crazy exam blocks. I am also a little nervous about finding a safe and ncie place to live...
6)What specialty are you considering?
Of course my mind will probably change through rotations, but as of right now I have interests in Surgery (i've loved my experiences shadowing in teh OR), but I also seem to be intersted in Dermatology and Oncology. As you can see these are all very diff. so I am pretty much open to various specialties (however, from what I have experienced thus far I dont think that I will be going into primary care...like fp, IM, or peds)...but again who knows. :)
7)What's your favorite band?
I love all kinds of music...and dont really have a particularly fav. band.
8)List some of your favorite movies
My best friends wedding, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Wedding crashers, Wedding planner
I love Romantic Comedies
9)List what you like to do outside of medicine (there has to be at least one thing)
I love spending time with family and friends, i love dining out...shopping, doing outdoor activities, and cooking.
SotaBGirl 01-21-2006, 01:18 PM Congrats on your acceptance bnoosha!!!!
bnoosha 01-23-2006, 06:21 PM Hey guys...so ever since i received my acceptance i have been searching online for some places to live...just basically exploring my housing options.
i dont know if i can wait till may for the listserv to be set up...im so anxious :)
anyways...so i know that i defiently want to live off campus...and in a safe place...whether in vallejo..benecia...or surrounding cities...also i know that i want to have a roomate...i was thinking of a 2 bed 2bath (my own bath is would be nice too)...but im also open to getting a 3 bedroom and having two roomates...
what are all you thinking about doing???
So i found this really nice apartment complex...i guess it just opened and its in vallejo and seems pretty close to the school....its a beautiful community with lots of cool features....gated community...fitness center...washer/dryer in apartment...really nice ktichen w/ granit counter tops....but since its got lots of features...its kinda expensive...
if you guys are interested check it out....

alright...well i would be curious to know what you guys are all considering in terms of housing.
:)
billytoanle 01-23-2006, 11:09 PM Hi Bnoosha,
I am from UCI too. thanks for the link on housing. Looks like a very nice place since I am in the process of searching.
Does anyone have any other links for good housing options near Vallejo?

I'm hoping to live alone. My cat is adorable, but insane, and does best when it's just me and him. That and I like living alone! I'll probably end up in Vallejo or South, definitely not North. I used to live in Oakland, and I'd rather be closer to Oakland than Sacramento.
but... housing is expensive. might end up needing roommates.
ScOrPiO2983 01-24-2006, 09:34 AM I've been looking for apartments too mainly on rent.com and jus searchin google. Ideally I'd like to get a two bedroom and have another roommate. The apartments that you found are so nice bnoosha but wayyy too expensive. Most of the apartments I've been looking at are around $1200. I don't know how nice they are tho. I want to live close by and would like a relatively nice place but something affordable too. Post up links to more places if you guys find any :) .

Hello everyone! I recently just recieved my acceptance to TUCOM as well. I'm pretty stoked and can't wait to start and meet everyone. I also went to UCI and moving up north will be a change but i'm looking forward to it. I was lookin at the place Bnoosha found and its not too bad price wise if you get the 3 bedroom and split it between 3 people. Let me know if anyone is interested.
bnoosha 01-24-2006, 01:44 PM Hey Billy
Thats cool you went to uci...when did you graduate...or are you a curenty student.
im finishing up my fourth year right now
as you know...irvine is pretty nice...and defeintly diff. from vallejo...which is why i really liked the apartments at broadstone..
Alright well good luck with your search...and let me know if you find anything else thats nice around the school
Hi Bnoosha,

bnoosha 01-24-2006, 01:48 PM hey scorpio
ya i know the apartments are pretty expensive for vallejo...i saw some others for around $1200 (for a 2 bed)...but i also dont know how nice they are...my biggest concern is safety..i hear there is a high incidence of burglaries and robberies so I really dont want to have to deal with that....
for me personally its a difference of $200 a month...(800 vs. 600)...but im gonna keep looking
let me know if you see anything that is nice and a bit more reasonable in price...
Take care :)

Alright well take care

Whattup Bnoosha,
I graduated last june. I think i actually interviewed on the same day as you on the 9th. The place looks real nice and i figure if you're gonna live somewhere you might as well like it so splitting the 3 bedroom is affordable. But i am a guy, i don't really mind living with females but i know you are looking for female roommates so i hope you find some cool ones! Best of luck and i'll see you in the fall.
bnoosha 01-24-2006, 04:43 PM Hey
Okay i think i remember you...congrats...im glad you got in...r u going here for sure
Ya i hope i find some cool roomates too
I acutally called the apt. complex today...just to find out more info..
and they said they have 180 units...and will reserve an apt. till may...but not till like july (which is what i would want)
they said they are filling up quickly...but who knows they could be just saying that
but its really great cuz each apt. also has a refrigerator, washer dryer and microwave...i guess you save on appliances
im gonna go visit my boyfriend in SF in the middle of february so im gonna go check out this place and see if it is all that it is cracked up to be
good luck finding roomates too (even though it is still really early)
:)

I'm 90% sure i'm gonna go to TUCOM, unless i get accepted to an MD school i'll be at TUCOM for sure. I got into another school back east but I like cali too much to deal with all the snow over there.
When you get a chance to check out that place can you give me the low down on how it is? Thanks!
KendoDO 01-24-2006, 06:50 PM Hey again, I will repost and stuff as more people ask...I am looking for 2 roomies to share a 4 bed, 2.5 bathroom place 4.17 miles away from school.
The area around is safe, I checked the crime out in the area, one catch: gotta be a dude...sorry ladies! But yeah, hit me up!

Hey KendoDo, so your name is Matt. I replied ur email to me asking what your name was, how silly of me.
And to Rnugg and Bnoosha: Sup to Irvine ppl. Hopefully more from UCI will attend. I am a 4th year at UCI right now. By the picture on ur profile Bnoosha, i think i recognize you from a class or something. Did you take anatomy Fall05 with that cool bald professor?
Hey Rnugg, tell us more about yourself. Maybe I've seen you before on campus. Unlike you, I accepted their offer as an early acceptance. So that means I can't interview anymore, 100% sure i will go there. But hey TUCOM is pretty nice even though it was the only med school I ever visited.

You probably saw me around campus for sure, UCI isn't that big so after a while everyone looks familiar. As for right now, I don't plan to do anything but party till we matriculate haha Well thats me in a nutshell.
bnoosha 01-24-2006, 10:34 PM Hey billytoanle

Hey Guys!
I will be at Touro in the Fall as well, and I just wanted to say that looking on Craigslist is also a good place for housing. The apartments will be quite expensive but sometimes you have better look on Craigslist for something more affordable. I am planning on sharing housing but want a mixed household if over 2 people. I think living with one other girl would be okay but would want to have a mixed household for 3+ people. I live in the east bay right now just working so if anyone ouside of the area needs help with living tips let me know, I have been in the Bay area for a long time :)
Can't wait to meet everyone soon...
Heather
erik_paulson 01-29-2006, 03:52 PM What's up class of 2010? Congratulations! Don't do anything this summer besides travel, relax and party because you won't have much time for it once school starts (although it's not as bad as people make it sound)! I am in the Touro-CA class of 2009 so I can answer any questions you may have. I see that a couple of you are from Colorado? I grew up in Lakewood, CO and went to Bear Creek HS followed by CU-Boulder. Email me at erik_paulson@yahoo.com with questions. See you guys soon!
Aisujin 01-30-2006, 10:53 AM Hey everyone,
I'm going to be attending TUCOM this comming August, and I'd like to make some new friends before I'd hike to Cali. My name is Tom. I'm 24 years old and currently living and working in Cambridge, MA. (Yes, its freezing!) I enjoy rock climbing, skiing, hiking, weight lifting, soccer, and anime. I'm still working on the logistical nightmare of moving from coast to coast, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
In addition, I am also looking for potential a roomate or two. I'd like to find an apartment or townhouse in Benecia, or somewhere other than Vallejo :p . Please let me know if you are interested. I'm a neat, quiet, and respectful rommate. (If your into video or computer games that's a big plus in my book!) email me at: thomas_scalfarotto@hms.harvard.edu
See you this August!
CoverMe 01-30-2006, 07:49 PM Welcome to the island, everyone!!! As we sat in lecture today, with the door open... the grass is growing like mad outside on the hill by your future lecture hall... and a bunny hopped by.
And I thought to myself (what a wonderful world)... DAMN I'M GLAD I'M NOT BACK EAST!! hahahahaha!!!
Like Erik posted above, feel free to PM me with questions.
Congratulations!!!

Hahahha...your description sounds like something one would see on TV! :)
ScOrPiO2983 01-31-2006, 10:00 AM I've been looking more into apartments and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the following places
Austin Creek Apartments
Seabreeze
Blue Rock Village
Fountain Plaza Hills
These seemed to be the most affordable that I found. Anyone have any comments about these places?? Thanks.
KendoDO 01-31-2006, 04:34 PM For all you out of towners, the weather isn't super wonderful in Vallejo, kinda cold compared to parts of the Bay Area, but, it most def beats other parts of the country, cept maybe San Diego....currently it is 65, was 70 yesterday, I am in shorts and a tee in wintertime, oh I love you California.
Anyways, I am looking into gym memberships in the area, anyone else interested? Their bball court is good for kendo if anyone is interested in learning, but I would love a place to swim and run. PM if interested!
billytoanle 02-02-2006, 12:17 AM Hey has anyone in here thought of dorming?
What are the pros and cons of dorming in TUCOM?
Does anyone know how hard it is to be approved for dorming in TUCOM?

I thought about dorming, but after seeing the campus and whats on the island i think i'm gonna live off campus.
ScOrPiO2983 02-02-2006, 09:44 AM I thought about dorming too at first but my tour guide said it was pretty hard to get into because there's not that many rooms. But then I like the thought of having my own living room and kitchen so I'm gonna get an apartment.

Yeah it would be nice to just roll out of bed and go to class or study, but there is a lack of food and stuff to procrastinate with :) . So I am going to go with the off the "island" option. Maybe Benicia...
For those of you who are planning trips or going to be out of town before classes start, I called the office to find out about the financial aid packages, roommate list etc. and they told me they are planning on sending that stuff out in early april. Not good for those of us who are going to be gone, oh well what can you do?
billytoanle 02-02-2006, 07:25 PM Yeah, you guys have a point about the cons of dorming.
Looks like off campus is a good idea. Hopefully I can find one or two guys to share a place with. If any of you guys interested maybe we can start looking for a good place together. I live in southern California, Orange County. So it'd be nice to drive up there before school starts and check out some prospective places.
Aim me up at: BillyLe

BluesClues32 02-02-2006, 07:32 PM Hey Everyone!
Well, I am 75% sure I will attend TUCOM next year. I'm from the East Coast, and I have several questions, that I hope someone can answer.
1.) I plan to live with my boyfriend in Berkeley (he will be a grad student there). I was hoping that someone who knows the area could tell me about the traffic from Berkeley to MI in the AM and the reverse in PM. How long does it take? Do students ever take this route? Is it worth saving $10000 in rent to commute?
2.) Are lectures available on MP3? Do we buy classnotes or are they supplied online to us? How is the curriculum changing?
3.) Are laptops required? If so, do you know the min. requirements?
4.) Where are the 3rd year rotations set up? I looked at the list, and most seem to be in AZ, CO, and NV. Do we get to pick where we want to do our rotations? I really want to stay in the SF area. Of the list posted online, do you know which hospitals have great reputations?
5.) How do you know the match list is impressive?
6.) When does orientation begin this year? When do classes start?
These are my questions thus far! Thanks!!
:)
bnoosha 02-03-2006, 01:58 PM Hey I think you asked some great questions.
I am also intersted in the answers to questions 4-6.
As for # 1, I here the commute from Berkely isn't that bad, b/c you are going in the opposite direction of traffic...when I drove from sf in the morning it took me 50 min (so i assume berkely should only take you 30 min in the morning)
and again in teh PM it will be reverse commute (against traffic)
2) Lectures are not provided in mp3 format...i think professors give out slides (but I am not positive about this one).
Hope i helped a bit...and if anyone else can answer the other questions...i would also really appreciate it.
:)

ScOrPiO2983 02-03-2006, 03:40 PM I e-mailed Dr. Haight (who referred me to the curriculum director) about the laptops and he said that laptops will most likely be required in the upcoming year especially since they are trying really hard to make the campus wireless. He didn't know the requirements yet and said that once they figure it out, they would let the students know. Therefore, he told me to wait on buying a computer.
As far as the curriculum, I was told that it has not been finalized yet and they will let the students know as soon as they figure it out. The same goes for orientation and the start date.
It basically seems like everything is in the works and will be finalized in the next month or two. Hopefully, we'll be able to find out soon cuz I'm curious to know all this stuff too :)!
bnoosha 02-03-2006, 04:14 PM Scorpio Thanks so much for that info.
It was defeintly useful...i am going to wait till june probaby to purchase a laptop...but i am really curious to know when orientation is and when school starts...so hopefully they will have the schedule up soon.

bananafish27 02-04-2006, 07:13 PM Hey Guys,
Does anyone know what time the interviews are held/what time we need to be at Touro? I flew up to No. Cal for my Monday interview and I forgot my letter that had all the info on it.. Can someone PM me on what time to be there?
Thanks!

theflyingpig 02-05-2006, 01:25 PM Now it's official, I'm going to touro-mi :D I believe I'll get a great education and enjoy my time while doing so. The staff seems quite personable esp. Dr.Haight and my interview group was great. Although mare island is not the most ideal place, it's pretty close to the bay area. I couldn't ask for more.
I look forward to meeting everyone in the fall.
Now to get rid of that travel bug...
tfp
Aisujin 02-06-2006, 01:32 PM Congrats TFP! See ya in August!
Another couple of questions:
Anyone working on their student loans?
Which ones are will you be taking out?
Has anyoen heard of HEAL loans? (I called the financial office, and their response was bascily... WTF?!) I know a couple of DO's that financed some of their education with it.
Its kinda freaking me out how much I'm going to be in debt for this. :scared: I know I'm going to make it back. But that's going some major pressure after medical school.
SteffiSF 02-06-2006, 05:46 PM Hi All Potential Future Classmates,
I have an interview at Touro (my top choice school) in March and I'm nervous about the class already being filled by the time I interview. Any advice? Also, can you let me know what your interview experience was like? I got the interview invitation less than 2 weeks after all my secondary materials were in and I'm very excited about the possibility that I will be in medical school come August. Let's hope that's the case!
Thanks,
Stephanie
bnoosha 02-07-2006, 12:55 AM Hey Stephanie
Congrats on your upcoming interview. Touro is great in that they offer very quick turn around time on application processing. My best advice for the interview at TOuro is to knwo your primary and secondary application really really well. I cant stress that enough...Be prepared to elaborate about any/everything that you may have mentioned in yoru app. I would have someone you know look at your apps and ask you questions...(to help you practice) ..I prepared by looking at the interview feedback...whcih was really helpful.
As far as the interview goes...its pretty chill...Dont be scared about the whole group interview thingy...it actually is more laid back than one on one...Dr. Haight makes you feel so comfortable and happy to be there...and this is a great positive vibe right before you interview. He will even ask you a sample question, that you will answer in front of a group...just so you get the feel of how things will go in teh group interview.
I wish you all the luck...just be yourself...and show them what you have to offer (obviously you have done well and have receieved and interview...so confirm all your qualities)
If you have any more questions please feel free to PM me.
GOOD LUCK AGAIN.
Bana :luck:
Hi All Potential Future Classmates,
I have an interview at Touro (my top choice school) in March and I'm nervous about the class already being filled by the time I interview. Any advice? Also, can you let me know what your interview experience was like? I got the interview invitation less than 2 weeks after all my secondary materials were in and I'm very excited about the possibility that I will be in medical school come August. Let's hope that's the case!
Thanks,
Stephanie
Aisujin 02-07-2006, 07:54 AM Stephanie,
Congrats on getting an interview. Another "trick" you might want to try is to call the admissions office and find out who will be interviewing you. Then you can do some reasearch of your own on your interviewers and ask some well thought out questions. And as suggested... look over your app, dress well, practice interviewing. Just think of it as a job interview.
Don't stress too much about if your going to make it in this year or not. They have an early accept program for next year. So if they fill up this year, and your a prime candiate, you can get a spot for next year and not have to fill out any applications. (Dr. H will explain it better than I can) And I speak from experience, this program ROCKS :meanie: . I went for my interview in April, and I live on the East Coast, so if I had gotten in that year it would have been a nightmare for me to move to Cali in that amount of time. This also gave me another year to spend on my research, travel some more, and spend time with my girlfriend.
Best of Luck!
Tom
SteffiSF 02-07-2006, 08:31 AM Bana and Tom,
Thanks for the advice, especially about rereading my application materials. I wouldn't have thought of that. I was also unaware that this is a group interview--that should be interesting and conducive for more casual conversation. Though my interactions with Dr. Haight have been limited, they have been awesome. I could tell right away by speaking to him that the energy of the program was perfect for me and it had a huge influence on my decision to making this my top choice. It's nice to hear that confirmed by your posts. Congratulations to both of you and perhaps we'll see each other come August.
All the best,
Stephanie
SteffiSF 02-07-2006, 08:37 AM Tom,
I came across some information on the web regarding HEAL loans. It looks like they were discontinued in 1998. Here's the link to DHHS's website:
http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/dsa/healsite/
Good luck--I agree that the debt can feel incredibly scary, but just think of all the people before you who have done it. They all say it's no big deal. And, when it comes down to it, what's the alternative? Can you think of anything that you would want to do more in your life than this journey?
:) Stephanie
Aisujin 02-07-2006, 01:05 PM Stephanie,
Thank you SO much for that link! I've been searching and searching for the info on this loan. I guess that means Stafford loans, here I come. Best of luck on your interview and PM me if you have any other questions about it.

theflyingpig 02-07-2006, 10:21 PM Stephanie,
I second everything Tom and Bana said  and you might want to check the medical school feedback link on this site as well for other ppl's experiences. Goodluck !! :D
I know it's still early, but what's everyone's plans for housing? As of now, I'm looking between Glen Cove or Benicia with costs being the ultimate decider.
Flt Surg WannaB 02-07-2006, 11:17 PM Hey all!
:D
Hey there MJ! Nice to meet you. Just received my acceptance letter and dropped 2 Grand and some change! Wow! I'm completely excited to be a member of the Class of 2010! I am a recent transplant to Norfolk VA. Followed my husband who is stationed out here in Virginia. We are really glad to have the opportunity to return to California! I grew up in San Diego, but I am unfamiliar with the area. I concur, we definitely need to have a pre-orientation get-together!
I loved general area and the atmosphere. Mostly though, I really liked Dr Haight. He really set the tone. The interview was fantastic.

It's sounding like there's certainly a diverse group of folks coming together for the 2010 class. If you get some time, tell us some more about yourself. Most of us have already posted some info here, but more couldn't hurt!

This poor thread has been, how you say, 'stagnate' lately. I KNOW that more than the dozen and a half or so folks that have posted on here have been accepted. I also know that about 90 % of applicants surf this web site more than they'd like to admit. My question, therefore, is "where's the other folks?"
I got ROASTED over in Pre-Osteo for saying that Mare Island's anatomy lab was better than TUCOM-LV. They were on me like a pack of dogs on a three-legged cat! I wasn't trying to be a jerk, but the thread was "TUCOM-MI VS. TUCOM-LV"; how was I SUPPOSED to answer?:D
I work overnights as a phlebotomist at the trauma center. Recently, the hospital(due to budget issues) has decided that the ICU nurses will be doing their own blood sugars, which sounds reasonable to me. Truthfully, ours was the only facility I had ever worked at or heard of where the laboratory did ALL of the blood sugars. Obviously this was a source of contention amongst the ICU greek chorus, and last month they decided to circulate a nasty rumor about the phlebotomists on our shift (all TWO of us for the ginormous hospital). The rumor was that we spent all of our time in Radiology watching cable TV and that we had been up on the Unit laughing at the nurses for having to work so hard. They took it all the way to the VICE PRESIDENT of the corporation! How ludicrous. Yes, we've been to Radiology before, but just to say hello to some friends that work there. Never had we watched TV, as was alleged.
The reason I'm sharing this completely irrelevant anecdote is that I was thinking to myself how happy I am that I am almost to the point that I don't have to have my supervisor sit me down and accuse me of things that nurses made up to be spiteful. Yes.
Someone post something; this thread was almost off the page. DMU is showing us up big time!! Hope everyone is well!!!
BluesClues32 02-15-2006, 08:21 AM Ha! I'll post because I just happen to be on SDN. My boyfriend and I were trying to figure out housing for next year. Does anyone know of good areas between Touro and Berkeley? We are looking into the Richmond/El Cerrito/Albany/San Pablo areas. It's so difficult to look into housing when you live on the East Coast. We want to live in a safe area near the 80, either in a one or two bedroom. Any ideas?
BluesClues32 02-15-2006, 08:40 AM Also, does anyone know why the Mare Island Student Life website isn't working? Thanks :)
hmack 02-15-2006, 09:45 AM Also, does anyone know why the Mare Island Student Life website isn't working? Tnanks :)
If you are thinking about living in Berkeley area.... I suggest North Berkeley because it is pretty safe and not too far from 80. If you start looking, PM me with some of the areas and I can maybe give some insight. I live in bay area and my bf lives in Berkeley and I remember when he was looking for housing with his roommates.

I have to say that I am just as completely happy that I am almost done with this job I have. I even have a secret countdown with my coworkers till I leave... although my boss has no idea.... 97 work days to go and counting! :)
You would think my boss would ask what the large 97 on my whiteboard means in my office .... but nothing since the countdown started .... over 200!

I am moving all the way from the East Coast (MD specifically). Any other East Coasters want to share on how they are planning to move themselves and their stuff ALL the way across the country!??! Anyone else going to be around at that time to share notes or complaints?

I'm also moving from MD! I've pretty much resigned myself to selling all my furniture and starting over. the best quote I've gotten for movers was $2700, or $2400 for a uhaul. and that just ain't worth it! so, unless I find some miracle movers, I'll be shipping boxes and getting rid of the furniture. makes me sad, because I love my couches!!
I'll be driving from Baltimore around 6/20 with my cat, and doing the apartment hunt once I'm there. whereabouts in MD are you?
asm028400 02-16-2006, 04:20 PM Hey you guys (and girls). My name is Amy Motamed and I will also be attending Touro in the fall. I am extremely excited to finally be a medical student. I am graduating this spring from the University of Texas at Dallas with a biology degree and will be making the move to Berkeley with my husband, who will be in grad school there, so if anyone else is planning on moving to Berkeley, I would love to carpool. Also, do any of you know if there is another way to get to Vallejo without paying the $3 toll on the way there? That is going to be a serious money killer over time!!!! Anyways, I am looking forward to meeting all of you in the fall!

Hey there!
I'm just a few hours south of you in Virginia/Hampton Roads area. I will be transporting both my daughter and I via car. My husband will follow after he gets off of deployment. It will be a long haul with a 2 year old, but I'm pretty tough. The Navy will be transporting our things (hopefully - still waiting on the approval issue) to San Francisco. I am hoping that I will be able to jet down for a weekend to look at a couple of places before committing. That will probably be in April/May timeframe. Painful process, I know. As far as the cats,... what condition are they in? My 10 yr old cat drove cross-country and was pretty freaked about it. He stopped eating and drinking. He started having renal problems. We had to stop each night to get him to eat and drink. You might consider shipping (flying) them.

Hey there Marc!
I graduated from both UCSD & San Diego State University (BA in Psych/BS Molecular Biology). Used to be a scholarship student/trainee with the Joffrey Ballet in NY City while Joffrey was still alive (Yeah, I'm that old). Bicycle raced on a national level (Cat 1,2). I did some competition recurve and Kendo. Swim whenever I can. Worked as an ER Tech. Did some really weird jobs (though nothing scandalous) . I have a wonderful family (hubbie and almost 2 year old). Prior Army, trying to be Navy. I have the coolest preprofessional advisor at SDSU - Barb Huntington is the Bomb!!!
Right now I work for an Aquarium (just got hired to do a really fun job), but I haven't told them that I was going to leave soon. I really don't know how to break the news to them.
Can't wait to meet all of you, the Class of 2010!

Hey thanks Matt! I was trying to look for you while going through these posts. There was some poor guy from UCSD that I thought was you! Whoops!
I'm trying to get a flight back to San Diego, then onto San Fran to look at some apartments. It will be a bear! Did you know that I have been driving from Coast to Coast every single year! Its insane!
Dude! I'm soooo excited to start school this year! Working on a Navy HPSP scholarship package right now. Lots of hoops to jump and bells to ring.
Take care!

My cats are 7 years old and in fairly good shape (fat as houses but who is counting that). But they hate being put in the box, hate driving in the car, and hate me once the trip is over. They cry the whole way to the vets, a 20 minute journey. I can't imagine listening to them crying for 8-10 hours a day for 5-6 days across the country. I am seriously considering flying all three of us and shipping my car. More to relieve the stress on ME than them. I am sure flying will be no picnic for them either. LOL.
Thanks for the feedback. I am a contractor for the Navy currently. I wish they would move my stuff! :D Will you guys be looking for a house or living on base?

sadly no way around that toll
couchsurfer 02-19-2006, 02:21 PM Well, I just got the receipt for paying my acceptance fee. I guess a further reminder of what I don't have anymore. Well, at least they take credit cards otherwise...

BluesClues32 02-20-2006, 09:04 AM Here is one way to get around the toll on the Carquinez Bridge (from Berkeley to Mare Island)
Carpool -
Any 2-axle vehicle, without trailer(s), carrying three or more persons, may cross toll-free in designated lane(s).
Monday through Friday between 5 a.m.-10 a.m. and 3 p.m.-7 p.m.

Unfortunately there won't be base housing available for us, but the Navy does give us a healthy 2700/month living allowance and 350 for food. It will relieve some of the financial stress and burden. However keep in mind that childcare is a hefty sum of money (350/week). Yeah, ouch!
Nice to hear that you will be flying it. You will be saving money and your sanity!! :D
KendoDO 02-21-2006, 01:11 PM hehe, Ah Lisa! , apps in San Fran, my girlfriend's sister lives in japan town, sweet one bedroom appartment. But I think that area is kinda expensive and a long drive from campus.
For all you toll takers, get a "fast pass/track" (not sure the actual name) Basically you don't have to stop to pay the toll, you just put money into an account and it scans the card on your car as you drive by the booth. It gets special lanes on the road and will make yor communte a tad bit nicer. Did anyone check on carpools? I don't have to commute or anything but usually in the bay area carpools get get off paying tolls, I know the toll at the 680-780 area you have to pay regardless though.
anyways, lisa, when are you down in SD? come to Tues night practice we have alot of good kenshin lately, one of our sensei (akira igarashi) took 2nd in the godan and above category last tourney, went head to head with Ariga-sensei and did a good job. Btw, who was the guy who though you were me;-)
Last lil note: for those who were interested in my 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2 lvl townhouse 4.17 miles from school in a safe convientent place, I finally have pictures. The rooms are good size, as in a bed, desk, dresser etc will fit there. Full Washer/dryer/fridge/stove/oven will be there. Nice brick patio also. Has heating as well. So if you are interested please email me at m1schult@gmail.com I will forward you the pictures. The two roomates will share one bathroom fyi. okay I am done with my novel.....

bnoosha 02-23-2006, 09:29 AM Hello
It took me about a week to receive an interview invite (but that was over winter break)
But hang in there...Touro is really fast sending out information. Also, keep in mind monday was a holiday....
Good luck to you...hopefully you get an interview soon....
:)

heech 02-23-2006, 09:55 PM Heya folks,
I'm engaged to a TUCOM '09, so... that makes me alum-in-laws with all of ya. With that in mind, here's a useful link for all of ya:
http://209.209.34.25/webdocs/WeeklySchedules/Fall2005/ws0506com09.htm
Take a look at the 2009 schedule. The curriculum *will* be changing so clearly this won't directly translate to your year... but this gives you a better idea of when orientation is, when classes start, and the approximate weekly workload. (Note the loooong breaks due to Jewish holidays in October!)
The commute from Berkeley to Touro is definitely do-able, but just to make the commute fair (and to save a few $$), look into the Pinole/Hercules area. Very convenient commute, and still very suburban feel.
You guys are gonna love TUCOM-MI. Every TUCOM-MI'er I've met seems to be enjoying the heck out of themselves. Well, when they're not pulling their hair out.
One last URL... my link to TUCOM happens to write a blog for Medscape, here:
http://medscape.typepad.com/thedifferential/pinchieh_chiang/index.html
Don't miss the cartoons. ;)
doubleplay 02-23-2006, 10:08 PM Hey, I just had a few questions about living....I will be moving to the area in june/july....does anyone know if there had been an actual start date set? or orientation? Dr. Haight said that they may start earlier this year so that we get a spring break as well. Second, I was looking at
http://www.broadstoneliving.com/STERLING/sterlingvillage.html
as a possible place to live. Does anyone know about the area that this complex is in? Safe? close to the food/goceries/etc? It is pricey, but looks nice and is GATED!! Which, from the sound of it, is not a bad idea in Vallejo. I know it is close to touro, which is also plus. I have also been looking in Benecia (online) at
http://www.waterviewapartmenthomes.com
they seem ok as well. Any info/advice on more apartments would much appreciated. Thanks and congrats to all who are attending tucom!
cheers
mj1878 02-24-2006, 03:12 AM Hello all---
Wow, I can't believe it's almost March already. I found a blog by a TUCOM-MI student (http://medscape.typepad.com/thedifferential/pinchieh_chiang/index.html), and I enjoyed it thoroughly. She really loves Touro, and she draws really funny cartoons depicting what blocks are like, etc.. She also mentions that the cafe on campus now serves hot foods(starting a couple of weeks ago) like baked salmon, a variety of chicken dishes, all of which come with a side of veggie, and the GREAT news is that it only costs $1. Coffee is also a buck, and french onion soup is $.50 . I asked about wireless internet and what time the cafe/library open/stay open until. I'll let you know when she gets back to me.
kahoo99 02-24-2006, 08:47 AM does anyone know if the note service is good enough to NOT attend class?/are lectures taped?
Aisujin 02-24-2006, 01:01 PM I've heard class attendance is taken frequently
MasterShakeDO 02-24-2006, 04:37 PM First off congrats everyone from 2010! You guys are already smoking our class in terms of your forum's activity.
And congrats heech for taking the next step towards getting heech-ed, lol.
Attendance is only required for lab classes. Class attendance is not required. However, there is no note service and lectures are not taped. You have to gauge for yourself which classes you can study just off of the posted powerpoints or note packs. You'll learn which BSF professors have thorough notes and/or basically read through them in class.
Oh, the hot dishes keep going up in price. Last week they were 2 dollars and this week, 3! I think they just wanted us to get us hooked and then jack up prices, though honestly it wasn't that good. We got a new head of food service this week so we'll see if it improves. Coffee is great though. It's open til 2:30pm (but coffee is usually out by 11.
heech 02-24-2006, 05:16 PM lol, "heech'ed". Just learning from the Master. When're we gonna play a little poker? Just gotta make sure the ladies don't go all-in with their jewelry.
No wonder PJ's lookin' a little bummed this week... raising lunch prices up to $3!
iheartelvira 02-24-2006, 06:58 PM Hey...does anyone know when classes start for class of 2010? I saw a schedule that had class as early as Aug.7, I hope that's for later year students. Anyway...anyone??
I have yet to receive any fin aid, housing, etc info, and have not been active on my own getting that stuff taken care of...have you guys received any info yet?
Thanks, from an already frazzled soon-to-be student
Flt Surg WannaB 02-24-2006, 08:43 PM hehe, Ah Lisa! , apps in San Fran, my girlfriend's sister lives in japan town, sweet one bedroom appartment.
Hey there! Trying to get down to San Diego as soon as I can. Its all depending on the start date, really. If the start date is in August, then I will be moving in mid-June. If its earlier, then early June. I will probably stay with my Dad for a couple of weeks then set up shop for school 1 month prior.
Yep I know Igarashi sensei. How is he doing? I'm assuming that he's recovered from his wrist injuries. I have never sparred with him, but knowing Ariga sensei, I think he did well! My form is so messed up I don't think I would know what to do out there! LOL. I'm looking forward to being able to practice. Out here, you have to pay mega bucks to practice or travel 50 miles for it. I've done longer, but I think it would be cruel and unusual punishment for my daughter.
I think the guy that I had mistaken you for was DoDo. Not sure, though. He's from UCSD.
pjpajamas 02-25-2006, 01:37 AM Hey everyone,
I'm the one engaged to Heech and first year at TUCOM. I don't check SDN as often as he does though.
I'm also the blogger of www.medscape.com/thedifferential. I love the support, especially from fellow DO students, especially even more so from TOURO students. Can't promise that my blog will always be insightful (if even ever), do keep in mind it goes through an editor, and please send me any ideas/comments/questions whenever!
Congrats to everyone on getting in. You guys must have 101+ questions going through you're head. But don't worry, everything will work itself out! Right?
Quick As/Qs
School starts early August - you guys will have something like a 3 day orienation. Get here at least a week before for some socials your own classmates will be putting together.
Fastrak pass - search google, something like 511.org/fastrak to apply online. I don't use the bridge much, but I have one just cause it's free.
Cafe food - getting more expensive. I still like how at least there's something, but I'm still packing my own food.
Financial Aid - fill out your fafsa by NOW (by 3/15 was the date they gave us to guarantee our money will be there when we come back from the summer), double check with Administration for the TUCOM code.
On campus housing - applications are out for current students, don't know if new students can apply yet, but I'd check on that asap if you DO want to live on campus.
Not on campus housing - don't worry about it, you have plenty of time to look for housing and getting roommates. Plenty of places to live in: Vallejo, Benicia, American Canyon. Then if you want to go farther out, Fairfield in the east (where I am), on the other side of that toll bridge (Hercules?) going west/south - anyways you get the point.
Books - don't worry about that yet either. Might consider a Barnes and Noble membership though. They'll let you know when Tourobooks.com is updated for you guys and then you're big sibs (if you sign up for one when it gets setted up in the summer) will narrow down that list for ya
Hmm anything else?
SotaBGirl 02-25-2006, 11:28 AM No note service?? I thought there was something that the current students were doing/using.
How difficult is this to set up? I have only heard great things about using a note service. What does everyone think about setting up one if there isn't one already?
kahoo99 02-25-2006, 12:41 PM Tru that. I'm really bummed they don't have either a note service or a video cast. I don't generally get the most out of class time.
bnoosha 02-25-2006, 12:42 PM :luck: Hey GUys...
HOPe you are all enjoying your weekend!
I had a question about the FAFSA...have you guys filled it out yet...do we have to fill it out by the deadline 3/2? I recall that the women from fin aid said we can do it anytime...but i just wanted to make sure from you guys...
i also might try emailing fin aid on monday...but id like to hear what you gus are all doing
TAKE CARE
oh ya and yesterday i was shadowing in the OR...and there were a couple of med students doing rotations with the anesthesiologist...and i got to talk to them (one student was a fourth year from Touro)...SHe said that its not hard getting the rotations you want...I also talked to lots of students and it really got me excited to start in the Fall :) Yet, I'm also really nervous cuz the realitiy of medical school is approaching us very soon....so i vowed taht for the next few months i have to relax and enjoy my free time as much as possible...okay just wanted to share that with all you guys!! :luck: :luck:
BYE
toothless rufus 02-25-2006, 04:12 PM I just wanted to get some opinions on this: Would it be in poor taste to email Dr. Haight to ask when the next "interview offering" decisions are/were scheduled after the date my file was complete? ( If this is the procedure, or do they consider to offer an interview as soon as an applicant's file is complete?) I realize that it is late in the cycle and they have probably filled all seats, but this school is awesome, and I am discovering how unfun not knowing what is going on is. :p
KendoDO 02-25-2006, 04:53 PM update on housing:
So I bought a 1700 sq ft 2 story condo 4.17 miles from school. Update on the room prices:
1) smaller room = $500
2) larger room = $600
You will share a bathroom with one other personal and utilties are not included in the price. I so far have 2 couches, a bunch of lamps, and getting some other stuff. It has full washer/dryer/fridge/nice kitchen/brick patio, and is in a safe neighborhood. Also very close to shopping and a gym too. So if interested email me at m1schult@gmail.com asap!!
Thanks,
Matt

Hey did anyone answer you yet? I was wondering about the Broadstone apts. myself.
couchsurfer 02-28-2006, 12:08 AM Tru that. I'm really bummed they don't have either a note service or a video cast. I don't generally get the most out of class time.
Likewise. I'm definitely up to form some sort of note taking service. I use to do this with a group where we all take turns taking notes and then posting them online. This was great for ppl like me wanting to catch some extra zzzz's.
BTW the frappr site seems to be growing well. Keep it comin'

I haven't heard much at all as far as a response to the apartments I was looking at. Those broadstone apartments look nice, yet expensive. I called them and they offered to reserve one for me (it isn't even built yet)...$300 deposit.....i may take it. Any suggestions for the experienced would be much appreciated!

Sadly enough, according to the admin. ppl the curriculum/schedule/financial aid/list serv and several more stuff won't be known for a couple more months. Probably the only thing we can do now is fill out FAFSA, send in our transcripts/immunization-physical forms and of course scrounge for that $1000 that'll be due in May. After that we can all twiddle our thumbs and wait. :D

I wonder if we are able to set something up run by us, but over the Touro website? Then we would have free web space and restricted access (only touro students who sign up). I have been looking at how other schools have it setup, and at most schools the students run it, pay a small fee at the beginning of the year if they want to be involved and use a taping/transcribing "method". So each lecture (with permission of course) gets taped, the student assigned picks it up and then has say 24-48 hours to "transcribe" the lecture and return the tape. As for the how the notes are distributed... I have seen both online and printed out, but printing would take more time and more money... so online seems the best.
What do you think we need to do to get this going? When the list-serv thing is up maybe we will get some contact numbers so we will know who to talk to.
 Ok... sorry for the long post - I obviously have too much time on my hands now that I have been accepted! Let me know what you all think!
bnoosha 03-01-2006, 05:26 PM Is the deposit to hold a place refundable? And when will they hold it till. I really liked that community.
I might go chekc it out March 17th.
Do you guys know of any other NICE/SAFE apartment communities like Broadstone that are within 15 minutes of TUCOM
If so let me know and i will check it out when i visit...hopefully in 2 weeks.
HOPE YOU ALL ARE HAVING AN EXCELLENT DAY!!!!.

heech 03-01-2006, 06:03 PM bnoosha,
When we were looking last year, we also considered this place in Fairfield:
http://www.bridgeportranchapartments.com/
Driving time from Bridgeport Ranch to TUCOM is right about 15 minutes.
But really, there are a lot of house/condo renting options in the Vallejo/Benicia area. For example: http://www.apartmentcities.com/California/d/spyglass_CA.asp
I personally would risk waiting until you guys got in town to actually sign a lease on a place, even if that's in July, unless you're very budget constrained. It really won't be too difficult finding a satisfactory place in the area.
bnoosha 03-01-2006, 09:36 PM Thanks so much Heeh
Ill check out those apartments as well.
Just to clarify...you WOULDN"T risk waiting till july..thus, you reccomend finding an apartment and getting in JUNE?..do you say that because there is a lack of housing
THanks again!

KEPDO 03-01-2006, 11:13 PM Ok so guys you have pleanty of time before school starts. I know its hard not to worry/contemplate your new educational experience but there isn't much you can do between now and August. But here are a few things to clear up that I wish I had known before I started:
1. Attendance is NOT mandatory for classes but for labs, its a good idea (quizzes each week) and Intro to Clinical Medicine is mandatory (one time a week for two hours).
2. Don't buy your books yet. I bought ALL of them required by the instructors and have used two of them. The library has some copies available for reference. We have a student book exchange with all the texts you will need at great prices. Instructors will tell you what to buy interms of text books when classes start and since you're starting so early the bookstores at UC Davis and UCSF are excellent resources for you to take advantage of.
3. DO BUY: Gloves, stethescope and BP cuff (the rest is for second semester). Think about investing in the board review series text books for help with classes (they weigh less than the text books and are easier to read but remember REVIEW only). Buy some highlighters and note tabs you'll need them!
4. A note service/recorded lecture is not necessary. Recording lectures is a touchy subject with some instructors (I asked the second week I was here). ALL COURSES provide you with a NOTEPACK with ALL OF THE TESTABLE information. Now if your goal is to do well on exams.. thats all you need. If your goal is to do well on boards... well email me and I'll give you personal advice on how I'm approaching that topic.
5. Depending on your learning style (in reference to the notepacks) you might want to invest in a Kinko's account (to bind these notepacks) or in some 1-3 inch binders for your series of notes(About 15 for your first semester).
6. As far as the early start date. (yeah I know it sucks) BUT they were originally planning on starting school earlier than that date until my roomate and I talked the administration out of it (you're welcome). Also, we will have a week off in the first semester for "fall break".
7. Living in the Dorms is fun! You meet first years, second years, PA's, Pharmacy students, play ping pong, pool, and practice OMM more than if you lived off campus. Plus its really cheap, close to campus, and no utility bills. And I'll be your neighbor (I think thats the best reason).
8. Start getting your immunizations as soon as possible, get your physicals done and makes sure you have insurance. When dealing with the administration be sort of meticulous in your record keeping, its a good idea to make copies of important documents and speak to the personel involved with your particular concern.
Thats all I can come up with for now. But if you have any more concerns you can email me or my roomate:
me: KathyEdalat@yahoo.com
my roomate: amycaravello@yahoo.com
Hope this helps. Remember to enjoy your summer, relax, relax, relax and have lots of fun.
OH and on the first day of orientation, dress nicely and look representable, you'll have to do a brief intro of yourself to your entire class and its videotaped!!(Really wish I knew THAT the first day)

The $300 goes toward rent i believe, plus one month free rent! It's hard to choose a place online. You will have to let me know what u think when you return from visiting and looking at various housing options. thanks :-)
couchsurfer 03-01-2006, 11:59 PM Good stuff. Thanks for the info. Just out of curiosity what percentage of your class stay in the dorms? .

Thanks so much for your information!! Can you break down what orientation week is like for us? Also what have you heard about the new curriculum? Will there be PBL? You just reminded me that I need to stop by employee health(here at the hospital) and get my Hepatitis panel started so I can be done by the time class starts. I did TB last week.
SargonZ 03-02-2006, 12:58 AM Hi guys,
I just found this thread and figured I'd answer a few questions that hadn't gotten addressed yet.
Does TUCOM have a Stan or Harvey model?
TUCOM does not have a Stan or Harvey. Sorry.
Just got my, "thanks for your deposit, don't forget you need to send us another $1000 by may" letter!
Oh dear. You really expect them to give you info ahead of time, don't you? I expected the same thing when I was in your shoes. I'm a New Yorker - I expect things to happen NOW. Plus, I'm a little neurotic - I want to be able to plan everything as far in advance as possible. That said, TUCOM is none of those things. They will tell you what you need to know.... eventually. Don't hold your breath waiting on it, or your classmates will eagerly try out their new CPR skills they learned at orientation. :-P
3.) Are laptops required? If so, do you know the min. requirements?
Laptops will be required. Again on the not-holding-the-breath thing though. You'll hear about it at a time that will seem far too close to when you need them, but it will all work out just fine. It always does.
4.) Where are the 3rd year rotations set up? I looked at the list, and most seem to be in AZ, CO, and NV. Do we get to pick where we want to do our rotations? I really want to stay in the SF area. Of the list posted online, do you know which hospitals have great reputations?
It is possible to stay in the Bay Area, but we have a limited number of spots around here, and they are not necessarily the best option, education-wise. You will have to do a lot of commuting if you wind up choosing this option. Other rotation spots include Southern California, Michigan, NY, PA, and a few other sites.
Yes, you do get to set up your own rotations, and yes, most of those will be in the Bay Area.
NO, you do NOT get to set up your own 3rd-year rotations, and NO most of them will most definitely NOT be in the Bay Area, unless you are one of the people who gets one of those spots through the (slightly complicated) lottery system that TUCOM uses to assign third-year spots.
4th year is a different story - way more freedom, but for 3rd year... you're pretty much at the mercy of the Clinical Ed department.
Good stuff. Thanks for the info. Just out of curiosity what percentage of your class stay in the dorms? .
There are about 40 students total who live in the dorm. That includes OMS1, OMS2, PA, Pharm, and some guests.
Hope that helps clear things up. Enjoy your time before school starts... and RELAX. It will be okay.

I'm so glad that they re-made the website. The old one was pretty sad. I wish they'd move over/post some new pictures of campus as it's being updated. There were some new ones on the old website that don't work now, like of the grove, new study areas in the library, etc.
iheartelvira 03-04-2006, 05:23 PM Sadly enough, according to the admin. ppl the curriculum/schedule/financial aid/list serv and several more stuff won't be known for a couple more months. Probably the only thing we can do now is fill out FAFSA, send in our transcripts/immunization-physical forms and of course scrounge for that $1000 that'll be due in May. After that we can all twiddle our thumbs and wait. :D
yeah, figured as much...thanks, couchsurfer. :)
iheartelvira 03-04-2006, 05:37 PM So...anyone know when the semester for class of 2010 officially begins (orientation and all that included), and what chance new students have getting into campus dorm housing?
Thanks to all the current med students at Touro for the helpful posts...it is so much less stressful to be able to talk to and hear from people already in the program. Thanks a lot you guys! :)
KEPDO 03-05-2006, 10:14 PM school starts august 7th as far as I know.. DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT but its a prespective. If you want a dorm room SIGN UP NOW!!!!!!!! CALL Dr. Favreau or come down in person if you can. OK now I have to study for exams loom their ugly heads.... speaking of head.. Anatomy lab here I come!! :D

couchsurfer 03-08-2006, 10:43 AM At this point, I'm trying to decide whether to live in SF(ideal) or Benicia. Would any current Touro student living in SF comment on how the commute is(hate it/love it/whatever). Basically, I'm wondering whether it's worth it or not commuting back and forth everyday in order to live in SF.
kahoo99 03-08-2006, 10:47 AM I've lived in sf for a couple years, and while i'm not a student, i know it's a forty or fifty minute drive w/o traffic and probabaly an hour at least for the ferry to get you to touro.
bnoosha 03-08-2006, 11:05 AM Hello
IM not currently a student either (will be next year)....
but my boyfriend lives in SF, and there have been a few mornings where I have commuted from his place to Touro to check out the campus...
let me tell you about the commute..
He lives about 5 min. from union square...so it took me about 10-15 minutes to get on the 80.....after crossing the bridge there is essentially NO traffic up to vallejo...the traffic is in the other direction....but nevertheless it took me about 45 -50 to arrive at the school, and thats b/c one of my friends told me a slightly faster way of getting to the school (basically it entailed taking an exit before Tenessee ave)
Im not sure if teh commute would be shorter if you were to take the golden gate bridge instead of teh bay bridge...but from my experience it will take 45 minutes w/o traffic
So if you are considering living in SF, make sure you choose to live somewhere that is close to the bay bridge (so you can cut down your time crossing the bridge) and make sure you keep in mind that you will basically need to leave your house at 7am every day
for me personally i would rather sleep the extra half an hour (but thats cuz I love my sleep!)
Anyways...if you have any more questions let me know
I am also going to visit the area next friday (3/17) and I am going to check out apartments in 1) vallejo 2) benicia 3) Martinez and maybe herculues/pinole area
I have made a large list of apartments that seem good (online at least)
and when I get back I will definetly let all you guys know what I thought about all these apartment communties
Also I will try to take some pics of the nicer places (for me SAFETY and nice, new apartments are a plus) so that wll be my focus
Let me knwo if you guys have any suggestions
im really excited to hopefully figure out where i may be living (or at least narrow down my choices)
Alright well hope everyone is having an excellent week
(wow my post was so long...sorry :))

Another thing to think about if you are considering SF is the bridge tolls and the amount of gas you will be using. I have a 30 mile commute to work right now and I have a great car (gas milage wise) and I spend almost 200 dollars in gas. Also SF is much more expensive and while it may be a cooler place to live, would you really get to take advantage of SF as much as you would like as a med student? You will spend quite a bit of money to live in the city.
IMO it would be nice to save on the gas $ and other expenses and then just enjoy the city that much more on a Saturday night! :)

I used the forms at http://www.tucom.edu/tucomforms.htm, and all of what they need seems to be listed on there.
Also don't forget to send in official transcripts.
Booshna - will you be checking out Bay Village in Vallejo by chance? I would love to hear what they are like! Thanks in advance for sharing all of the information you find. So helpful!

Hey there Bnoosha,
Thank you very much for doing the research on the apartment situation. For those of us who are stuck on the East Coast, your input is really really important to us. We are looking for apartments that satisfy the same criteria of safety and cleanliness as well.
Thanks again,

gosurf 03-14-2006, 03:04 PM i'm interested in how the current tucom students like touro. how do you feel about the program? would you make the same choice if you could? i like the sound of the block scheduling but thats only from reading about it. do you feel you get more free time in the block schedule format? i'd like to hear anything else you'd like to offer about your experiences.
bnoosha 03-15-2006, 03:15 PM I emailed student affairs on Sunday asking when classes start, and when orientation is...as well as teh date of the white coat ceremony.
However, I have not received any response. :(

When is Orientation?
heech 03-15-2006, 03:24 PM The white coat ceremony is actually held in the Spring for TUCOM-MI, and I believe only for 2nd years about to start their clinical years. Orientation will be early August, but I don't know if it's been finalized/announced quite yet.

ScOrPiO2983 03-15-2006, 04:58 PM Hey guys,
I jus called up the school and the lady told me that orientation will most likely be from August 2-August 4 and school should start on August 7. She also said that orientation is only a couple hours each day and starts at 1 p.m. I asked about the curriculum and she said that she wasn't sure if it's been decided but once it has, it will be posted on the website ASAP. So I guess we have to keep checking the website for the final calendar and curriculum information!
Thanks for the update. I kinda hope they get the new curriculum finished.

BluesClues32 03-19-2006, 10:45 AM Has anyone from the East Coast decided the cheapest way to move across country? Thanks!!
bnoosha 03-20-2006, 10:08 AM Hey GUys
Well Im back from my apartment search, and I was able to find out a lot of information for you guys.
Okay well i started off looking in martinez, which wasnt bad, but I ultimatly decided that it is too far of a drive (about 30 minutes) so I wouldnt choose that area. If anyone is intersted in living in martinez let me know and i will let you know what I thought was nice.
Next I looked in Benicia, which was definetly a nicer area. It seemed queit and peaceful. I only looked at complexes that had 2 bed 2 ba, cuz thats what i was intersted, and therefore the apartments I found to be nice were the following:
*CLUB PACIFICA....this was a very nice community, very very clean, and seemed very safe, and the lady said they have several touro students living there. However, she aslo did say it is about a 20 min commute to school. You guys can check out pics and more infromation by looking on rent.com. Also, wont look at your application letter without your award letter, and she said many times touro takes awhile to get this out.
*Sterling Heights Apartments....this was another nice community, and was tucked away near the bay...and near residential homes. The community wasnt as nice as club pacifica, but nevertheless, it was nice. Again the commute to school is about 20 minutes.
*Point Benecia Rentals
707) 746-6000
385 E 2nd St, Benicia, CA
Okay these were townhowmes right by the bay, and across from the benicia yacht club. THe area was very cute, and had a small town feel, with little shops less than a mile away. This however was farther than the other two, about 25 minutes I estimate. I didnt get to look inside these. Im not sure about teh availiblity, b/c when i called the lady said that some of the townhomes are owned, and soem are rented, so she didnt have anything to show right then. But this was a very very cute community.
Okay now to vallejo
Basically, while i was there i drove in front of about 25 different apartment communities. Yup, thats a lot, and let me tell you the majority of them did not look nice at all. Either they were old, dirty, and you could see some people hanging around the complex that made me feel uncomfortable. Hey maybe i'm being to judgemental, but after hearing things from others about vallejo, and being a girl i dont want to take my chances. While drivign by one of the communites, i noticed a car with its windows broken into...that defeintly made my shy away from that place.
So basically, this is what i noticed about the whole city of vallejo (which now I seem to be an expert of, considering I saw so many apartment complexes). There is a good side of vallejo and a not so nice side of vallejo. Basically, the side of the I-80 that leads to mare island is not as nice or safe (and many people livign in the city told me the same thing), while the other side of teh I-80 is a lot nicer. THis side has more residential communities, and definetly a more suburban feel. Furthermore, its located very close to huge, new shopping centers, with a target, costco, home depot, resturants...etc...etc...I really got a better feeling from the surrounding on this side of teh I-80, and if you guys visit, you should drive up and down tenesseee ave, and you wil notice the differene.
Okay, now before i left, I was pretty set on living in Broadstonevillage. I thought it was a beuatiful community that was gated and full of ammenties, however Broadstone is located on the other side of the I-80, and therefore I dont think it is in the best part of town. Yes it is only 5 minutes from the school, and while we are on that, I drove from the school to the intersection at the end of the bridge, and basically getting off the island takes 5 minutes alone, so keep that in mind as commute time as well (so i reccomend when mapquesting directions, mapquest to the intersection of mare island way, and tenesee ave and then add another 5 minutes). Okay back to broadstone, so it is a really nice community, and b/c they are new inside of the apartments look magnificient. Garages however are an extra 100 dollars, so thats kinda not worth it. Also carports are 15 a month, but i guess if you sign a lease soon they will give it to you for free. It was gated, which was a plus, but when it came down to it i dont think that i will be choosing this community. For one, the shopping center located behind the community seemed to have a lot of people lurking around, and contained a 99 cent store, a starbucks (:))and a couple other small stores, but no grocery store. Again maybe im being judgmental so dont take my comments the wrong way, but the feeling i got from the surrounding areas wasnt that great. One plus was that broadstone was surrounded by 3 senior apartment communiities (and i dont really worry about much of my safety with seniors being around), but the austin creek apartments right across from broadstone were not that appealing. Okay so after this long long paragraph....whats my conclusion....paying about $1650 for a 2 bed 2ba was not worth it, esp. b/c you are not in the best part of town.....to bad b/c the place was actually pretty nice....oh ya, and they do not pay for water, garbage, or sewage, so that is another 50 + per month.
okay now for the rest of vallejo....i found three apartment communiites on the nicer side of town which i will be considering.
*Sundance Apartments (you can find this community on rent.com)
They have over 500 units...so there will defintly be availablity by the time you want to move in, so you dont have to worry about putting your deposit down or anything like that. The communiites seemed nice, not the greatest, but defeintly nice....however, on apartmentratings.com you will see that there are some bad reviews of the community. THe units however do come with a washer dryer, whcih i think makes doing laudry a whole lot easier. Let me know if you have any specific questions.
*Next was Village View apartments
Okay this community seemed nicer than sundance, and pretty safe. The pool wasnt the nicest, but i mean how ofter will i be going swimming. Anyhow, all these units came with garages, and the community was bulit in 1986 (so its not too old). One thing i loved abotu this community, was the floorplans. They had a 2 bed 2ba + loft, which was really really nicely layed out (there were two floorplans...and one was btter than the other). Anyways, I thought the loft was pretty spacious, and the lady told me that some touro students use that loft as another bedroom. I dont know about that, but i thought that using teh loft as an office would be great. Two desks would fit in there for sure, and it would seperate your bedroom, from your sudy area, and that was very appealing to me. However, in this communiity, i think location is imp. It would be nice to have an apt. that got lots of sunlight. anyways you can get more information about this at http://www.villageviewapts.com/index.htm and oh ya, the price for that 2 bed 2 ba + loft was only 1225...(a steal comparted to broadsone)...if you want they have some aprtments without a loft for 1150. And almost all the apartments are located on teh 2nd or third floor, b/c the gargages are on the first floor....oh and i forgot, all the 2 bed 2 baths had w/d hookups and she said you can rent w/d for about 30 a month, and they had mirrored wardrobes as well (just an extra plus) :)
*Blue Rock Village
This was a little farther up than sundance and village view apartments (about an extra 2 miles north), but this community was gated and in a very nice area and very clean. The place seemed safe, and the community had about 500 aparment units. I didnt get a chance to look at the actual 2bed 2ba floor plan, but i saw a one bedromm, and it semed nice. The layout for the 2bed 2ba seems really good b/c there are dual master bedrooms, both with walk in closets, i think making the split perfectlly even. Only 1 carport is assigned per unit. you can check out there website for more info http://www.brebluerockvillage.com
okay so the 3 apartments above were between 12-17 minutues away from school (when i drove it)...im not suer if mapquest gives teh same distance.
sorry my post is kinda unorganized, I was kinda in a rush typing b/c i have to study for my two finals this week, but if you guys have any specific questions, please please let me know and i will try to answer anything.
Okay well take care and hope this helped a little.
Oh ya, and as of right now, I think i am considering the 3 aparments i mentioned above that were located in vallejo. The drive just seems better than that in benicia and the apartments are about 200 less than those in benicia. But im still not sure, b/c i have heard that becicia is safer. We'll see
doubleplay 03-20-2006, 10:51 AM Hey All - I was just wondering if lap tops were required...and if so, what are the specifications (ie windows OS, etc)? I was looking at the ibooks/power books by apple and it looks like you can run windows as an additional platform on a MAC...does anyone have an insight as to the limitations to such a computer? THanks

I emailed Dr. Haight about two months ago to ask about this and he said at that time that laptops weren't required. Although this could have changed... As far as purchasing a computer, I have a laptop and will probably be using it since I type faster than I write. As far as iBooks and Power Books go, they (the new Intel versions) "can" run Windows but it is not something they do by default and it requires a bit of "hacking" on your part to get it to work (mainly because the new Macs use an EFI based bios and XP doesn't support this - Vista will whenever it's released). Also, once it is working there aren't many drivers out for Mac hardware to run in Windows and those that exist are no where near perfect. You have to understand, MS has no reason to want people to run Windows on Mac. Macintosh, probably secretly wants people to in order to increase hardware sales, but they'll probably never admit it. To see a video on this topic take a look here: http://media.libsyn.com/media/macbreak/macbreak20060317-001s2-mp4.mov
At this point I'd wait and see what happens, although if you want to buy one now, a Windows-based laptop would be the safest bet (although you should dual boot it with Ubuntu Linux instead :D ). Anyway I have a HP DV1000 that I'm pretty happy with... its a 14" widescreen laptop so its easy to lug around.
SotaBGirl 03-20-2006, 02:49 PM Bnoosha - You Rock! Thank you so much for all of this info. I was looking at the Bay Village apartments on the west side of I-80, so I am so happy to find out before its too late about the area. I didn't see it on your list, but I am assuming the area is not that great. I guess I am moving to the east side now... too bad, Bay Village is right on the water there :(
Did you take any pics?
ps... I owe you a beer for all of this info - first round is on me

I was happy to help with the information. You dont owe me a beer, but i'm down for a night of drinking...hey we are only 15 min. away from napa :)
anyways...ya most of the places near the water weren't that nice...kinda unfortunate.
Also, you can check out apartmentratings.com, which gives reviews of some of the apts....like bay village (they say there are lots of break ins)
Anyhow...r u going to be going up to check out apts...when will u be moving??

bnoosha 03-20-2006, 09:18 PM hey guys...
so i hope i didnt put you to sleep with my essay on apartments...
anyways...i had a question. So i think tucom creates a financial aid award, and bascially i hear that this covers the 9 months of school (2 semesters)...how are we to cover our other months of rent? DO you guys know any more info about this?
Thanks!
SotaBGirl 03-20-2006, 10:17 PM Bnoosha - I am planning on moving the weekend of July 15-16 and most likely won't be visiting before hand. It makes things difficult, but I figure if whichever place I find is terrible... I'll just look for another. When I have done this in the past I didn't sign the lease until I got there - just in case. When are you moving?
For the 9mo thing - at the interview they said we have to budget for it, but I am not sure how I am going to figure that out just yet.

Hey Bnoosha - first of all...thanks a ton for doing the legwork for all of us "out of towners" - the info you gave was awesome! Just one question...In your opinion, which is better, Blue Rock Village or Sundance? I have a puppy, and The Village doesn't allow animals. I like the floor plans to Blue Rock...but i's hard to tell by just the websites, the big differences between the two. Thanks Bnoosha!
couchsurfer 03-21-2006, 12:06 AM I second that.  Many thanks Bnoosha, this info will definitely help when I'm getting ready to check for places. From your description, I'm leaning towards Club Pacifica, but curious about Point Benecia Rentals(do they have a website?)
bnoosha 03-21-2006, 10:37 AM BlueROck village is nicer in my opinion than sundance...plus i read a couple of reviews about bad security at sundance on apartmentratings.com and knowing that blueRock village is at least gated...seems like a better choice.
But just keep in mind that blue rock is about 2 miles farther...but the area is a lot nicer as well....like on that 2 mile drive up there is a beautiful park and you pass by some nice residential homes.
Good luck

bnoosha 03-21-2006, 10:41 AM Ya club pacifica was probably the nicest apartment community i saw, i liked it but am just worried about the drive
anyhow...unfortunetly point benecia rentals does not have a website that i know of.
I wish i took some pics of the place...but maybe you can call them and see what information they offer. I called when i drove by and they said that they are townhome like apartments, with 1 car garage and rent goes for $1400-$1475 for a 2bed 2 1/2 bath (so im sure they are 2 stories)
Let me know if you find out any more info as well

asm028400 03-23-2006, 09:27 AM Hey everyone,
I emailed Dr. Haight about the laptop situation a few weeks ago and since the curriculum is changing he referred me to someone in charge of curriculum and this was the response it received:
Dr. Haight has referred your question to me. The answer is yes, we will be requiring laptops. Pretty much any laptop that is Windows XP compatible, with 1gigabyte RAM, is sufficient. We have had some problems with ACER laptops, so we advise against those. We would recommend the extra long life battery option, if it is available, and also a back-up battery would be a good idea.
Hope this helps!

So I am assuming that if you can get a macbook to dual boot an apple OS as well as ms windows XP, all compatibility issues should be taken care of? I really want to get one of the new apple notebooks with the intel chip in - but at the same time remain compatible. thanks
btw - 1gb seems a bit high, especially for a laptop...anyone else agree?

I agree that the 1GB seems really high for a laptop especially since many are still coming with only the 512. I'm wondering if that is a mistake.

1 GB should be good especially if you decide to upgrade to Windows Vista (which has a release date of January 2007 right now... unless it gets delayed again). The cheapest way to do this it to build the laptop with 1 stick of RAM. For example, I built my laptop with 1-512MB stick. Then after I got it, I bought a 1GB stick aftermarket and put it in. So now I have 1.5 GB for roughly half the price it would have cost if I had it built like that. Memory is usually really easy to upgrade, you just pop open a door on the bottom of the laptop. 512 MB is "enough" but its starting to get old... by the time Vista comes out 1 GB will be standard.

In reference to the Macs please read my earlier post. With the bios/hardware differences, it just isn't that easy yet and the drivers are very mediocre and buggy right now. Buying it right now is a huge gamble. I'm sure Windows will work on them perfectly sooner or later, but possibly not by the time school starts. And keep in mind you'll have to wait even longer to get Vista to run on them. If you want the Mac you should probably wait and see how far along this whole compatibility process is in mid June/early July and then decide.
Don't forget to take battery life into account. I was talking to a med student a while ago and she bought a laptop with a nice video card and a huge screen. Not only was it a pain lugging it around she said she only got 3 hours using an 8 cell battery and kept having to find a place to plug it in all the time. The laptop I have, has the same specs as hers, just with a smaller screen and slower video card, but I get about 7 hours using a 12 cell battery (1.5x more battery life) and have a 6 cell (3.5 hour) backup. Also, that Intel Centrino stuff really makes a huge difference in battery life!
Alright, time for me to get off my computer geek pedestal :D Anyway, hope that helped someone.
hamandcheese 03-23-2006, 08:07 PM Does anyone think that these guys (i.e., the school) are asking for a bit too much? I already have a laptop. Unfortunately, though, it has poor battery life and it is really heavy and bulky to be carrying around. Also I would need to buy RAM and install it. So I would have to get a new battery that will last longer (this will be at least $200) and RAM (don't really know how much this will cost). By the time school starts I will have had my laptop for only two years, and I feel it's a waste to buy a new one just because Touro dictates so.
Anyway, sorry for the rant, but I would like to see what everyone else thinks.
By the way, my name is Hami.

Honestly, I doubt you have to stick to their requirements. Basically if your laptop can run WindowsXP and Office (Word, PowerPoint, etc.), and has a wireless connection (you can get a PCMCIA add-on card for this) you should be fine. They probably just recommend what they do so you can get the best laptop IF you're buying a new one now. If you already have one, the only thing you really need to worry about is the battery life.. how bad is it anyway? I'd email Dr. Haight and see if there are power outlets available at the desks in the lecture halls. If so, you should be fine and can just plug it in during lecture.
Also, check out www.slickdeals.net . They sometimes post some really cheap stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if you could get the PCMCIA card for free after rebates and find discounts on the memory. The website's updated almost constantly (check out their Forums under the Hot Deals and Freebies sections). Just be careful... I got addicted to that website and almost ended up broke! :meanie:

Thanks for the response.
I have an overall good computer with internal wireless and the rest. It's just the battery, like I've said, that is really terrible (2 hours max, even with brightness at a low level). Anyway, I'm sure it will all be OK in the end. Thanks again.

Hey Chiddy - thanks for all the great advice...you don't need to worry about being on the "computer geek pedestal" - I think I speak for many when I say it is great to have computer-savvy resources.....kind of like having a friend as a mechanic :-) Anyway, what do you think about the Dell notebooks - specificall the xps series or 700m...I was looking at the smaller ones that would be light and easy to lug around beautiful Mare Island. Also, if you have any other recommendations, feel free (I know previously you mentioned you had an HP??) THanks again for sharing your comp knowledge!
BBear 03-24-2006, 12:34 AM hey guys, just emailed dr. haight about orientation and he said it's pretty casual so we won't have to dress in suits or anything. :)
MasterShakeDO 03-24-2006, 12:38 AM Yeah, done with hell week!
Now I have time to waste time on internet message boards.
1. We have, like, 4 outlets in the entire lecture hall. how they can dictate everyone to have a laptop when the infrastructure clearly doesn't support it (including no wireless!) is ridiculous. that's why your battery life has to be good or else 135 people will be fighting to get the seats that actually reach the outlets. I had my laptop plugged in and someone tripped on it, sending my laptop flying. Luckily it still works fine, but slightly dented. 1 gig of RAM to run powerpoint seems a bit overboard IMHO. I'd go with the older model (1.3-1.6 mHz) centrinos you can get for under 1000. The new thing in our class are those PC tablets that you can write notes directly on your powerpoint. I'm so jealous that I don't have one.
2. The apartments in benicia are very nice, and I wouldn't worry about the drive. It's really not as far as it sounds. I don't think anybody complains that benicia is too far away, especially considering how much nicer it is than vallejo. Has Spyglass in Glen Cove has been mentioned? a lot of students live there and it's in a really nice part of vallejo.
3. You will likely have to take out private loans for living expenses as most of your federal aid goes straight to tuition. Go to salliemae.com to get you started.
4. Enjoy your time before school!

The Dell XPS M140 looks like a nice notebook. It's specs are actually exactly the same as the HP I have and this is what Dell says about its battery life:
Primary Battery:
Standard: 6 cell battery (Maximum battery life of 4:28 to 4:40 hours)
Optional: 9 cell battery available (Maximum battery life of 6:58 to 7:09 hours)
I would stay away from the 710M because of its graphics card which is an Intel Extreme Graphics. It's incredibly slow. Try to stick with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900 or better. Also, the ATI and nVidia cards that are optional on most of these laptops are going to allow you to play 3D applications like games, but also drain battery life significantly. The GMA900 can play games, just not the latest and greatest. Also keep in mind the GMA video cards share memory with your system RAM, so 1 GB or higher (especially for Duo Core) is a realistic goal.
Also, with laptops like the HP DV1000 you have the option of getting an HP DV1000t which is the Core Duo version for a few hundred more. This esentially means that the processor has two cores. While one might be virus scanning, the other can do something else. It just allows for more bandwidth. For information about Core Duo's power consumption versus a single core Pentium M, see here: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/01/16/will_core_duo_notebooks_trade_battery_life_for_qui cker_response/page23.html
Basically the dual core deals with power consumption better, but if you couple it with a higher-end graphics cards it starts eating into your battery life badly.
Also, be careful how some of these manufacturers list the dual core processors. If they write Dual Core Processor and not specifically Duo Core, the computer is probably not going to use Duo Centrino to conserve battery life. In fact, I don't even think they use the same processor. I'd call the manufacturer to confirm this before purchasing. I believe to have a Centrino certified laptop you need these three things: Intel Pentium M/Duo Core; Intel Video Card; Intel Wireless.
Personally, I think Dell and HP are both good manufactuers, but if I had to do it again, I'd go with the HP DV1000t. Its has the Duo Core processor, optional integrated webcam, faster RAM, faster Intel video card. I'm just unsure as to how much battery the Core Duo will use under actual load.
Now as far as purchasing goes... do Google searches for the term "Dell Coupons" they sometimes have things like 35% off, etc. For the HP just keep checking out their website (www.hpshopping.com > HP Pavilion Notebooks). Right now they have a free printer, $50 rebate, and some upgrades to the DVD burner with lightscribe. When I got my laptop they actually had a free spare battery.
Also, please take my advice with a grain of salt. I tend to always go for the higher end things when I purchase computers since I tend to demand a little more from them than the average user. I don't know what you will use the laptop for, so my advice might be overkill. :) I'm basically trying to tell you what "could" theoretically run Windows Vista at a comfortable speed once it is released (although probably without the nifty glass transparent interface). For most uses the Duo Core is probably just going to be overkill.
KendoDO 03-25-2006, 02:52 AM I got a Dell XPS Gen 2 as a grad present this year, the computer will last me till I am done with med school and residency, so is a very good investment. Also, if you remember during orientation they said no wireless, but I do remember them saying something about the pharm school having wireless...? Don't remember exactly.

Thanks a bunch man! Another ?....what do you think about the tablet pcs? I was looking at those as well, but not sure if they are quite worth the cost. Can you shed any light on these? thanks

I don't really know about those. They look neat and everything and I can see how it might be nice to write on the screen, especially to draw things. But, I tend to type faster than I write so it's probably just a waste of money for me. Also, you have to consider that they normally have slower processors and cost more than a comparable laptop. I'm not sure if these would work as well, but Wacom makes these tablets that you can use with a regular computer/laptop to draw: http://www.wacom.com/index2.cfm
Here's an example of how that would work: http://www.wacom.com/businessapplications/index.cfm
EDIT: The 4x6 $99 one I posted about here earlier I think is just for editting pictures. For writing and drawing you'd probably need to get an Intuos3 which is much more expensive: http://www.wacom.com/productinfo/intuos.cfm (but it seems like you can get $50-$100 off if you go through eBay).

Haha, yeah. It's funny though, everytime I tell someone I'm going to medical school in California, they always say that they would love to live there but wouldn't because of the earthquakes. I'm sure I'll be hearing about this a lot now. :) I couldn't be happier though, I've had just about enough winter weather.

Trust me, I lived in Pittsburgh for 11 years and can frankly say that I'll take the occasional quake over sub-zero temperatures anytime. Plus, global warming is going to get us all anyway. So, welcome to California.
SheLioness 03-27-2006, 11:12 AM Has anyone from the East Coast decided the cheapest way to move across country? Thanks!!
I have decided to hire movers and drive out with my cats. Don't have any quotes yet but will let you know when I do.

chiddy 03-29-2006, 10:30 AM Hey guys,
Are the 2005 and 2006 match lists available anywhere?
2003, 2004, and 2005 are here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=175626
Haven't seen the 2006 match list though.
ScOrPiO2983 03-29-2006, 12:45 PM So last weekend I checked out some apartments nearby the school...I went on Sunday so a lot of them were closed but here's what I thought of the area
Club Pacifica: This was the first complex I went to and I really liked it. The manager was extremely nice and showed us all around. There are 3 spas, a swimming pool, gym, and a raquetball court in the complex. There's 3 laundry roms as well. The apartments are situated so that the rooms are on opposite side and they have one bedroom/one bath ($1120-1295), two bedroom/1 1/4 bath ($1245-1420), and 2 bedroom/2 bath ($1265-1490. The prices just went up but out of all the apartments I saw this one seemed the nicest and safest. The manager talked about how the crime rates were really low and that there are quite a few students living there. Also, there is a little room by the office with couches and stuff to study. The rent includes water and garbage. It's about a 20 minute drive to campus but you can take the freeway, so it might not be as long. There's a Raley's, Starbucks, and some other little stores really close to the building.
I saw two other complexes in Benicia that I liked but couldn't see the insides of since they were closed. The complexes were WaterView and Sterling Heights. I did call WaterView and their prices for the 2 bedroom range from $1155-1245. However, this doesn't include garbage and sewer which the manager said is about $40-45/month. Sterling Heights is in downtown Benicia so I think it's a little further from campus. I couldn't get a hold of the manager to find out the prices. But both of these places have nearby supermarkets and little shopping areas with restaurants.
Now onto Vallejo..like some other people on the forums have mentioned, the area isn't the greatest. Benicia seems a lot safer and nicer. I drive around Vallejo and most of the areas aren't places where I would feel safe coming home to late at night. I checked out SouthHampton and did not like it. SpyGlass was okay. The entire place looks like a shipyard. It is located really close to the water so the views are retty nice. The manager was pretty rude though and reluctantly showed me the models. The prices for the two bedroom/2 bath range from $1300-1400 normally. I did like the pools in the complex though (there's a lap pool and a normal one). There's also places that you can stand/sit to get an awesome view of the Carquinez Bridge. It's probably about a 20 minute drive to campus and I don't remember if there were any shopping areas or supermarkets nearby.
The other place in Vallejo that I thought was okay was Bay Village. That's a little bit closer to campus but when I asked about crime rates, I didn't get a straightforward answer which kinda worried me. They offer a one bedroom/one bath with den ($998-1195) 1 bedroom/1 1/4 bathroom ($1100-1250), and a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom ($1195-1295). This place does offer 6, 9, 12 month leases which I thought was cool if anyone is not going to be around for the summer, it saves money. You do have to pay all utilities, including the water and trash and she said that another management company was coming in soon so the prices may change (probably go up). The place had a really nice clubhouse and gym and an okay pool.
I also saw the area around Marina View apartments. They are located right across from Kaiser so it might be a good place during the 3rd and 4th year. It's a gated community and the area seemed ok. They were closed but I called and the lady said that they give discounts to Touro students and she could give a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom for $1100 whereas they are normally $1175.
In general, like I said before I'd go with Benicia becasue it's nicer and seems safer. Also, the complexes seem to have little restaurants and supermarkets nearby, whereas they seem further near Vallejo. If you guys are wondering about cable tv, one of the places gave me a flyer and the prices are as follows: Digital classic ($9.95), Digital Plus ($14.95), Digital Save ($29.95), Digital Gold ($43.95), Digital Platinum ($56.95). I'm too lazy to write out wha tthe packages mean but if you live in the area or are familiar with ComCast those are the packages. Also, for the apartments that have washer and dryer hook-ups, there's a company that lets you rent them for about $30 month. Otherwise, the laundry rooms usually end up costing about $2 for a full load at most of the apartments.
Well hopefully you're still awake at the end of this...it became a lot longer than I thought..phew! This is all I remember but if you guys have any other questions let me know and I'll try to answer them.
SotaBGirl 03-29-2006, 04:51 PM Thank you so much for the info!!
hamandcheese 03-29-2006, 06:45 PM thanks for the info...one question though: did you run into any studios or other apartments that are the in $700 or lower $800 price range?

Hey I wasn't interested in a studio so I wasn't really paying attention to them, but from what I remember there weren't many complexes with studios. The 1 bedrooms that I say were usually almost $1000.

asm028400 03-31-2006, 01:43 PM So, I was reading the newest copy of US News & World reports grad. school ranking and was sort of surprised about something. The average indebtedness at graduation was 182000, which was MUCH higher (at least 10-20000 more) than hardly any of the other schools. Does anyone know why? I was just curious, as I am definitely looking for ways to cut costs. I know that it could be due to the cost of living in California, but the tuition isn't even as high as some of the other private universities? Any insight?
PhDtoDO 04-02-2006, 09:58 AM Hi,
I'm definitely flying out this summer before I move to find housing, but if anyone could offer insight into finding a apartment in Benicia that allows dogs...I would appreciate it.
I'm thinking Sterling Heights is my best option and I could always move after my first year.
But, I might prefer a small yard for my dog over a community with fitness and a pool.
Also, how long of a drive is it to get from benicia to school?
thanks,
-sarah
hamandcheese 04-02-2006, 11:54 PM Anyone know exactly to what address the $1000 tuition deposit is to be sent to?
yosemite419 04-03-2006, 09:26 AM You should send the deposit to the same address you sent your 1st deposit to, the address on all of the letters we have received so far. Hope this helps! :D
Aisujin 04-03-2006, 09:36 AM Question time!
1.) Anyone still looking for a roommate? PM me. I'm trying to get as many options for housing as I can.
2.) Has anyone gotten the financial aid package yet? If so, what's in it?
3.) Has anyone else started to look into any other loans besides the stafford and Perkins to pay for rent and living expenses? (priavte or bank?) I've been looking at some Bank of America loans, and its mostly based on your credit rating.
4.) What banks are in the area? (which bank has the highest number of atms in the areas?... Bank of America? Citizens?)
5.) For all those non-Cali. students... has anyone actually started to sell/move/pack/store their stuff yet? It seems a bit too early to start doing that now. Just curious if my procrastinating tendinces are getting the better of me again.

Hey,
I'm anxious and excited about moving too. I emailed the guy that gave the tour when I interviewed and someone who was on this site or the MIS site. I was told that benicia is a very popular place to live and although it could take 15min to drive in good traffic...(my mapquest and not what the apts say) I think its also close enough to San F that its worth it.
It is suppose to have a quaint small town with shops and restaurants. I have to be able to find a place that will allow my dog. Sterling Heights is my top choice until I go out there to apt hunt. So SH is my backup but I'm going to risk a round trip ticket and a rental car to make sure I find the best place I can before I move out there. In my experience, this is the only way to do it. It's near impossible to line up an apt more than 2-4wks in advance. I'm thinking I'll fly down there at the end of June.
As for roommates, I think I'm going to live by myself for now. But there are others looking on the Mare Isle Life page.
No info on financial aide either...and I was in early so I'm sure they aren't out yet.
See you in August!
sarah;-)
PhDtoDO 04-03-2006, 11:57 AM Does anyone live or know someone who lives in Sterling Heights?
This is the only apt complex in the area I like that allows large dogs.
Any info would be helpful.
thanks

hey sarah - I visited Waterview apartments when i was on my interview and liked them. They allow pets (I have a beagle), butI am not sure what the size limit is. The partments, however, are nice and comparable to club pacifica (which does not allow pets :-( ) don't much about sterling heights, sorry

PhDtoDO 04-06-2006, 02:30 PM Hey,
I submitted my FAFSA a while ago so I emailed the FA at Touro to find out when I should be filling out stuff or receiving stuff in the mail. She checked my record and said that I hadn't submitted it to Touro NY.
Apparently, FAFSA has a Touro Osteopathic CA option when I looked up the number to the school (or I just got totally confused?). But the FA lady says you need to select Touro NY.
She also said the packets will be mailed in April....
"We are not able to access your FAFSA information, make sure you used the school
code 010142-New York.
We will be sending out the Financial Aid Packet around April. The packet will
have the Cost of Attendance and the Loan Request Statement. Once you receive
this information you will need to complete the Loan Request Statement indicating
how much you would like in Stafford Loans and send it to the Financial Aid
Office.
We will be posting the financial aid packet on line at www.tu.edu in about a
week. We have already posted the Cost of Attendance and any other information
you may need."
Hope this helps someone!

Thanks for the info...The school code thing for FAFSA is a bit confusing but when you do put in the code that you have posted here you will see that the Touro NY option shows up (a bit counterintuitive, but I wouldn't expect anything less from a school when it comes to financial aid).

Thanks for the info, Sarah. This is something I have been wondering about but too lazy to get proactive about it! :o
CoverMe 04-07-2006, 08:30 PM Hey you guys!! I'm currently a 1st year and having gone thru the trials of living in vallejo, I wanted to pass on a few things to you regarding living here.
I don't have any information on the apartment complexes, so i can't help you with that one... but i can steer you in certain directions in the city itself.
Dr. Irene Favreau is a WONDERFUL resource to help you find housing in Vallejo!! Call her if you're craigslist'ing and trying to figure out some sort of non-apartment complex dwelling situation.
Location is a HUGE issue in Va-jay-jay (yes, that term was used prior to Greys Anatomy... but the term was used to essentially mean the same thing!). You're running a risk considering anything in the "historical district" or basically anything south of Tennesee St. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY CUTE RESTORED VICTORIAN HOUSES!!
Granted (this is where I made my huge mistake last June) there are nice "pockets" where, for a block, there will be nice houses. BUT THE GHETTO IS TOO CLOSE. My next door neighbors have been burgled twice since I've lived here, and I can't tell you how many times I heard gun shots fired down the street.
For the most part, "The Heights" (the neighborhood north of Tennesee, and just east of the blue bridge) is niiiiiiiiiiiiice. Actually, it's kind of the reverse of what's going on south of Tennessee... nice nice houses and people and neighborhoods, with a few crappy people every once in a while.
Benicia is a safe bet, and I don't know anything about living further out, because I hate commuting.
Best of luck, PM me if you have a specific address.
Incidentally, the place i'm moving OUT of right now... with MUY MUY Psycho Landlord is 920 Florida St. Do NOT respond to her craigslist or other ads... she called the SCHOOL to complain that i didn't send her a thank you note for her Christmas card... seriously. this place has been a nightmare. (i'm literally moving to the heights this w/e!).
Much love to you all... i'm excited for you. We had our talent show last night and the talent was OFF THE CHAIN!! Totally awesome. Looking forward to y'all BRINGIN' IT next year!!!!!!!!
:luck: Best of luck! :luck:
optimusprime03 04-08-2006, 02:58 PM geez i didn't know there was a official TOURO-MI thread list...first of all congrats to all you guys. we all look forward to seeing all of you! i posted this on the main forum, but someone said i should try posting this on the touro one so hopfully i'll have better luck...
I'm currently a 1st year at Touro-MI. For those that are attending Touro and want to move to SF early like either June or July then I was hoping someone could take over my apt. I live in the "nicer" part of vallejo and am about a 10-15min drive to campus. I live by all the restaurants and markets which makes it nice. I am right by the freeway also (80). My place is a 1br/1ba and is decently priced ($885). You probably saw that vallejo isn't exactly a nice area and i decided to pay a littel bit more in exchange for safety. There are cheaper places, but it is on the other side of the freeway in the more dangerous area. There is a security car that drives around and a police officer that lives in the apartment complex. I'll be gone for the summer and I'm moving to a place a little bit farther from campus when i get back, because 8am classes aren't mandatory anymore. They will be for you guys (OMM lab and Histology lab probably) and those are classes you do not want to be late to. I would love for someone to take it over in June, but if not then July would be fine too. I think school starts in August (not totally sure). If this interests you and you want more info or pictures, you can message me. I currently have some interest for moving in july, but i would love it for someone to take it for june too if possible. If not, then i will just go by the order that i got messaged.
If someone could help me out that would be awesome! Look forward to seeing you guys in the fall.
optimusprime03 04-08-2006, 03:09 PM 1 more thing...i know a lot of people are probably starting to get a little worried about housing, but what happened for us was that as soon as they get the admission finalized, the COM president sent us a list of all the places they lived at with prices and such. I'm sure our new COM president will do the same so don't worry too much about it guys. As far as safety, i remember i was told to "stay on the east side of the 80 freeway." I think this is a fair statement. The apts on the west side of the freeway are more in the dangerous areas, but are cheaper generally.
aphasia 04-10-2006, 12:24 AM Hey guys,
I'm a first year as well. I just wanted to let people know that Spyglass is actually a nice community. The houses around here are nice, and the neighborhood is quiet. The views are amazing, and there are quite a few students living here. Maintenance is very prompt. They respond to requests really quickly. The "gym" is laughable, but the pools are nice and both heated.
The drive is about 15 minutes, give or take 5 minutes. There's an elementary school across the street, so sometimes there's traffic at 830am or so...but you'll be in class already ;)
There's a Safeway with a Wells Fargo (I think) and some other shops, a small video store, stuff like that just up Glen Cove Rd. Unfortunately, I think they're raising the rents a bit to around $1350-1400 for a 2bd/2ba. Captain's Cabin layout is nice, b/c you have two rooms the same size with full baths each...
Haha yeah..so that's Spyglass. PM me if you have more questions.
Congrats everyone!!
BluesClues32 04-11-2006, 02:30 PM Hey everyone!
Has anyone talked to Touro about health insurance? I am pretty sure that we have to buy it on our own. But, what plan is the best option for that area? Or which plans do most doctors in that area accept? Thanks!
DRofO 04-11-2006, 03:51 PM I am glad to have found you all...I made my decision to attend TUCOM last November and I am meeting with a real estate agent (she's my sister in law) tomorrow to find a place to live. I am hoping to find a place big enough to rent out a room or two...we shall see what I can afford.
Glad to join the discussion. I can't wait until classes start!!! (I say that now!) :)

BluesClues32 04-11-2006, 07:54 PM I PMed one of the 1st years and this was the response
hi...funny thing is that i still know some people without it since touro isn't really strict on checking..but everyone has their own...some chose to go with the tonik plan from blue cross, i went with the ppo45 with generic meds from blue cross. I don't know too much about it. I just looked for something cheap and that seemed decent. I would call an agent or post something in the forum and see what other students got. good luck.
DRofO 04-11-2006, 09:19 PM I have been noticing the posts keep talking about Benicia, etc...I thought American Canyon was a nice place...and not so far away, am I correct on that one? (since I am looking at houses there tomorrow!)
Thanks for the input.
Yeah, done with hell week!
4. Enjoy your time before school!

give me a day or two... and let me get in touch w/ one of the other first years... his aunt puts together policies, and put together the cheapest plans for several of us. When i get all of her dirt, i'll post it to your guys' class thread. kay?
to answer your question... since most of us are healthy and not planning on catching a disease or get pregnant, we got the cheapest thing we could find!!

texbsedo 04-12-2006, 07:44 PM Hello everyone.... just wanted to stop in and say howdie and that im looking forward to meeting everyone in the fall....
CoverMe 04-13-2006, 05:27 PM Sorry for the delay getting back to you guys...
The mom of one of our first years has set several of us up with health insurance. She's got the best deals around, and she's super nice to deal with. She's actually set up a special link for health insurance JUST for Touro students to price out the insurance and get tailored info just for touro students. She's great at returning calls, and about 75% of the time when you call her office, she answers the phone herself.
Congrats again on Touro you guys!! Woot woot!!!!!!! :D :D :D

BluesClues32 04-17-2006, 12:44 PM Does anyone know what orientation involves? Are we just doing ice breaker type activities and learning about Touro, or do we actually have class-like material...meaning are we learning CPR, etc? My brother wants to visit me the first week of August, but I dont want him to visit if I actually have a lot of work and studying during orientation.

Someone else on the forum posted that orientation doesn't involve much and will only take up a few hours each day.
KendoDO 04-19-2006, 01:14 AM I called Tucom today, they mailed out information on our next payment ($1000) and the immunization information. I think they sent out more info in the packet too. I am not sure what TUCOM's orientation is, but my twin at UCSD med learned how to draw blood, did the oath, and at the end of his week got his white coat.......I remember he came home telling me his classmates were not so good at drawing blood
crunchy 04-19-2006, 05:36 PM Hello :-p
I had forgotten all about Student Doctor -- I'll be starting at TUCOM this August as well so I just wanted to say hi :p I just read through this entire thread - so since I know some stuff about y'all, a little about me.
I'm 23...grew up and currently reside in Lancaster, PA (yes, Amish-ville)...I was a Fightin' Quaker...and um, I'll spare you the other details of my life until orientation. As long as I'm in close proximity to slurpees and far from pigeons, I'm a happy camper. :D
Anywho, thanks for all the info! I'll be undergoing the coastal move as well so all the apartment scouting is super helpful.
See y'all in a few months!
Ellen :)
SheLioness 04-20-2006, 11:21 AM I have been noticing the posts keep talking about Benicia, etc...I thought American Canyon was a nice place...and not so far away, am I correct on that one? (since I am looking at houses there tomorrow!)
Thanks for the input.
Hi Drofo,
How did house hunting in American Canyon go? I am curious about that area too. :)
PhDtoDO 04-21-2006, 04:30 PM Hey,
I just need to vent. I'm still doing experiments on my Ph.D. and am about 20 pages into writing my dissertation. I would be done by now and just bartending at the Ritz...saving to travel...if not for Katrina. I was going to go to Southern Spain for a month and study flamenco, or go to Haiti maybe with my NP friend that does HIV program planning in the campo. But no, I'm stuck in the lab today and spent 2 hours at my house earlier trying not to be irritated at my contractor and his crew. I'm lucky to have them, they do great work, but my tenant has been living with her boyfriend for a month with her dog so they could rip out and replace all her ceilings, fix her doors and a couple of broken windows. And the insurance company (that ran out of money in early March, petitioned congress but they refused to let them file chapter 11..etc etc) still owes me well over 50,000 dollars. I'm borrowing 50,000 from SBA and took at 20,000 dollar advance on my citibank card (at 3.9%) until they pay up or until I sue. I myself am living in a tiny dorm room...which in New Orleans, is a luxury. We haven't even started on my side of my double shotgun (duplex in Yankee-lingo) and it all needs to be done and rented before I move to California. I bought the house with the plan of staying in NOLA for med school. But, I decided its best for me and my sanity to move on at least for med school. I feel bad for my friends that are staying because most have already gone. My 3 friends that came over to help me load the moving truck to put my stuff in storage all joked that helping everyone else move was getting old and a bit depressing. I know I'll be back and totally miss the Big Easy, but all I want to do is finish this chapter of my life and start on my tan (real or faux I'll never tell) in California. I think most of all I want my pets back. They are with family and friends in St.louis because I can't have them in the dorm. My cats are more than sick of living in my mom's basement and I almost cried when I saw my dog Annie while visiting for a babyshower last month. They told me she cried and cried after I left...literally. I got her from the pound in the 9th ward years ago, badly abused and not house broken (that was fun). She's a totally funny dog but I know she thinks I left her for good this time (at my best friends' house...totally dog-people who sat on the floor talking to their dog buck telling him how his cousin annie was coming to stay for a while and we need to be nice to her). I just gave all of the dogs huge juicy bones;-)
So enough for today. I'm calling my friend Jessica who's PhD was also royally f-ed to see if she can spare the time for a few drinks.
Window into my life,
sarah

It's the ebb and flow of life that keeps us on the path of progress. I'm sure you are firmly on that path.
DRofO 04-21-2006, 11:53 PM Hi Drofo,
How did house hunting in American Canyon go? I am curious about that area too. :)
Well...I am hoping for more luck...the housing market in AC is brutal! I made three offers last week on homes and was shot down. (nobody wanted to budge from list price...and I have a hard time paying full price for anything!) I am looking at two more homes next week and I am still hoping for some good news. I guess I still have some time but I am the type to have everything "buttoned up" before I need to! I will definitely post more info as I know more.
So I couldn't help but look into your other posts... :) (call me curious) I am not a traditional student either...hum...how do I say this...I didn't start my college career until I turned 34! EEEEK! If you plan on looking for a place out here soon I have gotten to know the Vallejo area very well let me know and I'd be glad to meet you in the area when you visit.
I live in the Sacramento area now and I have been making a trip down there almost every week for the past few months.

Well, good luck with future house hunting. I am sure you will get something amazing soon. :) I would be looking for an apartment so I was mostly curious about the safety/ammenities/distance to school aspects. Thanks for your offer for feedback on housing in Vallejo and the like. I will certainly take you up on it (and anyone else who offers)! I will be out at the end of May to look.
I am excited to hear there is another 'real' nontrad in our class. You mean I might not be the 'grand old lady' of the class at age 37? Awesome!

BluesClues32 04-24-2006, 12:57 PM Hey everyone!
Sorry, I have so many questions. BUT...after you fill out the FAFSA and it is sent to the correct Touro campus, do we have to send anything else to Touro? For example, when do we send our finanicial aid packets? Also, do we need to send a signed copy of our taxes? Thanks! :)

Are you just wondering about FAFSA stuff? Because we do have to send official transcripts directly to Touro, we also have to send proff of our immunizations (for some of us that is a challenge!) plus a physicians physical, the forms are on the web site, I booked my doctors appointment today! Oh boy.

Nope, it doesn't look like you are the "grand old lady' because I am 39. :p I actually have a step-daughter who is older than many of my friends from college! My philosophy is to keep moving so old age can't catch up! Oh, yea...have you guys heard about the 5 mile run during orientation week? I would start training if you don't want to be struggling at the back of the pack.
