I am actually struggling between PCOM and NSU right now. I really LOVED PCOM though. I was very surprised during my visit there by how much I really liked it. It seems like a great school and I like the way the classes are set up (systems based). But ... it is expensive which is making me hedge about it. I think I'm going to put the first deposit down to think about it some more but I may see you there next fall!

For me it's PCOM or UVM in the fall. I just turned down UNECOM. It wasn't an easy decision, but I think I made the right one. Anyway, whether I end up in Philadelphia or Burlington in the fall I'll be thrilled.

Does PCOM have a mascot? Silly question, I know, but I've been wondering.

Don't let the financial aid stuff bother you. Everything works pretty much the same as it did in undergrad except you have a greater allowance of funds that you can take out (stafford - sub & unsub) than you could in college.

You can take up to $38,500.00 per year (30K unsub, 8,500 sub).

On top of this many people also take private loans to bring the total close to $50,000/year.

One company I chose was THE (www.northstar.com). Im not endorsing them, but I have always had good customer service with them.

The PCOM Financial Aid office has plenty of resources regarding THE, Sallie Mae and other lenders which would be more than happy to have your business.

As a medical student you probably won't get turned down for loans so it is sometimes difficult to be responsible and not go overboard!

The total loan debt that you can rack up is around $190,000.00 which includes all government loans. More information on this can be found at www.pcom.edu and click on Financial Aid.

Hope this helps.

Seriously..I dont think so. AACOMAS takes 3-4 weeks. Then you have to wait to recieve your secondary. Then you would have to wait another 2 or more weeks for PCOM to review your file. Then hopefully get an interview invite. That is putting you somewhere around march (on a good day). I wish you the best of luck..I believe they are interviewing in april..but most likely for waitlist spots. Just have everything ready man. If you are close...drop off your secondary application & fee by hand.

Buena Suerte.

If you can sing it take histology before you get to PCOM and get a B or better in the class. No name U, community college all work. The department allows you to place out of the pratical portion of the class by taking a test during orientation. You have to get an 80 or better and that becomes your whenever there is a histology pratical. This allows you to get 25% of your grade done before classes start. The place out test is designed for you to pass and they give a review the day before the test that shows you Everything that will be on the test. You have tot kae histology and get at least a B to be able to take the test. It makes life so much easier because the test is much easier than the other praticals and frees up more time for the anatomy portion of SPOM.

You should not take the summer biochem course and find a histology course at a local school. This can be taken anywhere. This course is more valuable then summer biochem.

Hey PCOMers!
I'm going to have to plead major ingorance here, but I'm a bit in the dark when it comes to financial aid. I was fortunate enough during undergrad that I didn't have to pay for anything, but I've been on my own for a while now, hence the need for financial aid. I'm confused about with whom I apply for Stafford loans. Is it understood that this is what I'm applying for when I file FAFSA? And on PCOM's financial aid application, should I indicate the full amount of Stafford loans possible? And how do Perkins loans fit in? And what is this special PCOM Stafford loan (Keystone Best), and how is that different than anything else? Many thanks in advance to anybody who can help shed some light on this stuff! Obviously, I have no idea what I'm doing...

Thanks and see you in August!

Hey guys:

I hope I don't have to post this in other places. But for anyone in the know about this, I am debating whether to move to PA or stay in so. Jersey. According to Mapquest my driving time should be about 21 minutes. Of course this doesn't include jams and accidents etc. Should I realistically expect to drive in the morning from so. jersey and back from PCOM at +/-21 minutes a pop?

This would be my route:

3: Merge onto NJ-42 N toward WALT WHITMAN BR / CAMDEN. 5.5 miles Map

4: NJ-42 N becomes I-76 W. 2.0 miles Map

5: Merge onto I-676 N via EXIT 2 toward CAMDEN / B FRANKLIN BR (Portions toll). 5.4 miles Map

6: Take the I-676 W / US-30 W exit on the LEFT. <0.1 miles Map

7: Merge onto US-30 W. 2.6 miles Map

8: Stay STRAIGHT to go onto I-76 W. 2.7 miles Map

9: Merge onto US-1 S via EXIT 339 on the LEFT toward CITY AVE. 1.0 miles Map

10: Merge onto US-1 S / CITY AVE E via EXIT 339 on the LEFT. 0.6 miles Map

11: End at 4170 City Ave
Philadelphia, PA 19131-1610, US

I would prefer for now to stay in so. Jersey but only if I won't be spending an hour in traffic each way. Your advice is greatly appreciated ;)

Hey MedHacker-
That route will be absolutely nuts every morning. Both 676 and 76 are horrific to commute on, however, there really isn't a great way to do it without using one of them. 21 minutes is a laugh of an estimate--I'd say it's closer to 35 on a good day and a very serious "who-knows" on a bad day. You could take 676 to the art museum, and then use either West River Drive or Kelly Drive to get to City Ave--the flow of traffic on these streets is mostly into the city, where you'll be going away from the city. Hopes this helps, but if classes are at 8AM, I'd be prepared to leave at 7... If anyone else has any questions about commuting and/or Philadelphia in general, let me know--I've lived in or around Center City for almost 8 years now.

Jaynine - I also chose PCOM over UMDNJ-SOM, so if you're interested in my reasons, feel free to PM me as well...

MedHacker - the exit off of 676 is the one right after the Broad Street exit if you're driving towards PCOM. I think it's called Art Museum Circle or something--it'll spit you out on the parkway (where the Live 8 concert was) and point you directly at the art museum. Once you're at the museum, you can either head to the right side and use Kelly Drive, or you can cut left and use West River Drive--both run right into City Ave. Traffic heading in this direction in the morning is pretty light (I'll be doing the same commute, but starting at the museum--I live just up the street from it). Hope this helps...

Ppormansdoormd - your GPA is fine for PCOM; not sure of your MCAT, although I think it's okay. Of course, a complete application includes good letters of rec, extracurriculars, clinical experience, research, etc. so you can help yourself out to compensate for the MCAT score. Not to sound condescending in the least bit, but since you asked, my stats are on the higher end of PCOM's spectrum: 3.55 GPA and 37 MCAT.

To everybody else: I'm getting really pumped about this thread finally taking off a bit and people joining our class. I'm literally just sitting at the art museum waiting for people to have a drink or two with me, so let me know if you want to meet up. We can get a head start on anatomy.

1) It took about 2 weeks for my secondary to come in. (From my memory..this was way back in september)

2)The secondary comes in the mail. Three questions. Why PCOM? Why Osteopathic Medicine? What health-care related expierences do you have?

3)34,000 is just tuition. Students I spoke too said they take out max of 38K in federal loans and then get approx. 15K in private loans/grants/whatever. But that varies with the type of apartment you want to get and overall lifestyle you want to have while in school.

How long after the secondary did you recieve an interview invite? and also if i get an interview invite after my secondary, since they stop interviewing in march, i would probably get it in a week or two after my secondary is recieved by them right? I think i have a chance at PCOM because their website says that the average g.p.a is 3.36 and average MCAT is 24 and mines are 3.38 and 23 MCAT, so i have a chance right? i know i ask a lot of questions, but its because i really want to go to it since it is close to nj where I have a lot of family.

I submitted my secondary at the beginning of August and received an interview invite around the middle of Sept. If you were to get an interview, you'd probably get an admissions decision by the end of whichever month you interview...If I remember correctly, the committee meets the last week of every month to make their acceptance decisions. Good luck!

Words of wisdom from one further along the journey. I apologize I got too excited at the thought of burning MCAT books :D Well the proposed equation makes sense
MCAT books = $$$$$
Alcohol = $$$$$
MCAT books = Alcohol
This equation will be up there with that e=mc square one!!!

Well, it matters in regards to your prev post - S Asians aren't underrepresented in medicine, so it wouldn't give you an advantage. However, if SE Asians are (and I don't know if they are or aren't) then listing yourself as SE Asian would give you an advantage. I'm not sure how they (the ADCOM) confirms your race.

I talked to an admissions lady today, and she said PCOM interviews until the end of march and that less than half (half is around 125) of the seats have been filled. this is pretty good, my hopes are definitely high now (not too high though), so things may look good for me (hopefully).

Just write why you want to attend PCOM (area..standardized patients...just look at their website and look at what they have to offer)...why Osteopathic Medicine..(being able to treat someone with just your hands...allowing them to feel better before you give them medication)...and what healthcare related experiences you have.

I doubt they are looking for one specific thing. PCOM wants a diverse class...dont be a cookie cutter pre-med...put things in your secondary that will make you stand out.

Putting things on your secondary that are false or misleading might come back to hurt you during your interview.

It seems from all your posts-asking about minorities, shadowing a DO, asking for secondaries for those who were accepted that you are trying to find "short-cuts" to increase your chances of getting in. You should know that most osteopathic schools require that you shadow an osteopathic physician, and i wouldnt play up on being a minority (i dont consider asian a minority-look around) it would only be selling yourself short. Lastly, although important, invites arent given solely on secondaries...make your first priority your PS and primary application. goodluck.

Welcome to PCOM!
We are 2 current 2nd year students (females) looking for a roommate for next school year, the lease begins July 1, 2006. We have a 3 BR rowhome in Manayunk - (which, if you are not familiar with Philadelphia, is a fantastic place to live..there are lots of bars, restaurants, shopping, etc.) The house is newly renovated, all modern appliances, central air/heat, parking in front, washer/dryer, and more:) Rent is $600/person + utilities - we will be on rotations next year so there will be a lot of time to have the house to yourself and we can help you out with anything you need - congrats again and let us know if you are interested...

Shadowing osteopathic physicians is a huge benefit for the secondary and interview. I'm pretty sure you need it for secondary and LOR is required but they love when you have seen OMM technique applied. It was a focal point of my very pleasant interview at PCOM. I can't wait.

They have the facilities and staff to handle it. Plus a high demand to go to the school. It actually is really nice having the big school. The faculty and staff make it feel small though. Wanted to say hi to everyone. I got accepted today and will be giving up my seat at Nova. Their inital deposit is $750 with the rest due later in march, $1200. I'm glad to avoid giving up that 1200. I currently am a master's student at Drexel college of medicine. For those people saying PCOM class size is big Drexel's is the same size. They currently do not have a room large enough to fit all 250 students and they telecast their lectures. I hope this puts it into a bit more of a prospective having experienced a large allopathic institution. I think their tution is about the same or slightly more expensive.

I was in philly this weekend. I had a blast. Checked out roughly 10 apartment complexes and stuffed my face at some restaurants.....then consumed lots of alcohol. :( :(

I went to the admissions office and saw lots of people in the fishbowl. On monday PCOM was interviewing almost 20 people.

Oh yea... I tried to get my PCOM ID...and I was rejected. HAHA I guess I really have to send in that 2000 deposit. :meanie:

hi everyone,

this is my 1st time posting and I just want to congratulate everyone for their acceptance. I got my acceptance letter last week and I will see you guy in August. Is there any current Pcom student who can give an insight of what it is like for first year. Do we need to buy the textbook? what about class attendance? when I interviewed at Pcom, a MSIV said he stopped going class after the 1st 10 weeks and a MSII, who is also our tour guide, said she never bought the textbooks because she never use them. Just try to save some money you know. last question, how do you guy prepare for the Complex? I know, so many questions because I just so excited + nervous  to go to Med school.

hey guys, my pre-med advisor was supposed to send in my LOR three weeks ago, i called PCOM yesterday and they said it didn't show up on their computer, does that mean that they didn't recieve it or that it didn't get processed? does the LOR take three weeks to be "processed" just as the supplemental application or does it show up on the computer immediately? the interview season is winding down and i am hoping to get one from PCOM, is it possible if i tell them to consider me for an interview w/o the LOR and that it will be sent to them this week or next week by my pre-med advisor?

I seriously doubt the LOR takes 3 weeks to be processed. Your LOR must of been 'lost' or something. Don't know what else to tell you..hopefully they find it and send you an invite. Check with ur pre-med advisor again to double check that they sent your LOR.

Is there any current Pcom student who can give an insight of what it is like for first year. Do we need to buy the textbook? what about class attendance?

Hey guys, congrats on your acceptance. I am an MSI and will be more than happy to answer any questions you all have. As far as textbooks, for the first semester you definitely need an anatomy book, there is NO way around this. As far as the other books go, you can get by without some of them. A few you will use extensively throughout the first two years (Bates Guide to H and P, Robbins Pathological Basis of Disease), but again you can get by without all of the "recommended" texts.

As far as class attendence goes, OMM prelabs, anatomy lab, OMM Lab, and PE Labs are mandatory, but besides that lecture attendance is not mandatory. At the beginning of the year everyone attended lecture, but now maybe 70% come regularly. We record the lectures on an mp3 player which is then posted online and people scribe the lectures and lecture notes are distributed to the class for a small yearly fee(the students do the scribing and are paid for it so if you scribe you can technically get all the notes free for the year in return for your services).

Lecture attendance is really up to you, I personally have not missed a class. I can usually follow along during class and then just reinforce it at night studying. The people that don't go to class usually pick and choose what lectures they go to based on the lecturer. For guest lecturers (we have alot of local docs not necessarily part of PCOM, usually faculty from some of the other med school, big name hospitals, a person doing research in the topic we are covering or alumni lecture) most people attend. Some students say they don't get much out of early morning lectures or are more productive studying on their own. It really depends on your studying preference.

I don't know if this is true for others( I am from MD), but while GPA/MCAT are important they are not the only factors that will get you accepted. So there is no real GPA/MCAT score you need to definitely have to get you in, I am sure there is a range.

Things like outside activity, whether study abroad, volunteering, clubs, leadership roles, theatre, etc. are things that also way heavily. Can you be well rounded and stay on track for medical school?

I still haven't found anything on nucleus about it.

I called and asked about it..and Monica Jones from Student Services sent me a packet with the form. Basically you need all your immunization records sent over...a current Tetnas/Diptheria shot (within 5 years), PPD test (within 6-12 months), 4-5 polio shots, and of course MMR (Mumps measels and rubella).

You will also have to get 5 titers...chickenpox, hep b, and MMR.

Easy stuff. Just call PCOM if u need the form now. I believe they will send it to everyone in the spring...but I got it early because I scheduled a visit with my PCP so i wanted to get it over with.

Any other questions just shoot me a PM... I copied the form so I could fax it to you...then you can give it to your PCP.

Hasta Luego,
Jesús

Dont wasteyour time with summer start, It is totally useless even if you have never had biochem before. The people who took it had no advantage in cell and tissue. Work a job and earn some money, you will need that more
But on my letter it says it is mandatory. Maybe I should just call PCOM.

What up girl?
This is how it works, you can probably talk the admins out of requiring you to go. Do make sure, however, you do well in it during the year. If you don't and need to remediate/appear before the academic committee they will consider against you the fact that you declined the extra help when given...

But on my letter it says it is mandatory.

I called a couple months ago and they said in a round about way that the SummerStart is for students that showed academic difficultly on their transcripts in the past. I saw a thread about SummerStart on SDN and they didn't mention anything on my acceptance letter, so I called to be safe.

I would call to make sure if it is mandatory for some students and not others (I think anyone can take it too if they want a "head start," but I don't see how a superficial summer BioChem course is gonna help all that much--just my 2 cents).

If someone is on the waitlist and reads this I am giving up my seat. Sucks, I was really excited to start at PCOM. Good luck all.

I think a big part of it is that I never had biochemistry. It always conflicted with classes in my major...the downside of a small school I suppose

Hey guys, congrats on the acceptances. I participated in the summer start program this past year for the biochemistry portion only. Is the course required? For some people their acceptance is conditional upon them participating in this course for whatever reason(I am not sure what criteria they use). I believe these people may also have to take a summer anatomy course in addition to the biochem. I really do not know the specifics on this so don't quote me, call student affairs or admissions if you have further questions. I felt the course was helpful in that I knew the area, was moved into my apartment earlier and got to meet people in our class and some of the professors. I can't say that the couse helped me to prepare much for cell and tissue in the winter. It definitely helped somewhat, but since the course is not graded not everyone "gives it there all". We do cover some of the exact lectures from cell and tissue, we cover almost all of the glycolytic pathways, if you wanted to know what specific topics are covered. Therefore, you can get alot out of it if you want, but the value of the course is more than just the material you cover. You can PM me if you have any other specific questions. Good Luck!

I don't think the summer program is a bad idea. Good opportunity to make connections.

BTW is there anyone planning to attend PCOM Hospital Visitation Day this year? it should be fun.

Hi guys...just wanted to say hello...I'm gonna be starting up at PCOM this August as well and will be at the reception on April 30th ..can't wait to see you all! :)

Had a question regarding the Summerstart courses...when did you guys receive information about this? I didn't get any info about the summerstart course on my acceptance letter. Is the course for anyone who is interested or is it mandatory for everyone? I already took Biochem, so I'm thinking maybe that's why they aren't requiring me to take it

Thanks :)

I haven't received anything about the summerstart program either. I didn't even know it existed until just now! haha

Hi all. Did anyone receive the physical form the Student Wellness Center yet?

Did you get the mailing regarding the required deposit by May 15th? I didn't get this yet.

Hasta Luego,
Jesús

Here is a previous post.

I'm not sure about the background check, sorry.

I called the admissions office and they told me that spouses and others are welcome to the brunch. They also said if you had any other questions to email the office of admissions.

thanks for the posts. i guess i'm a little confused though. from what i've heard at umdnj som you have to rotate at the three (?) affiliated hospitals. you have to work "within system." but it seems like with pcom there are a lot of hospitals you can rotate at. do they have mandatory hospitals you have to rotate at during 3rd year?

I just came across this post and I'm unsure whether is has been answered on the last few pages but I will do the best I can to clarify this.

PCOMs affiliate list is long and has many different sites for rotations.

The way rotations are structured can be found here:

http://www.pcom.edu/Clinical_Education/Third_and_Fourth_Year_Programs/Third-_and_Fourth-Year.html

Each clerkship is one month unless otherwise noted:

Third year clerskships include: Peds, OB/GYN, Psych, IM, Cardio, Family, OMM/Family, Gen Surgery, Specialty Surgery, IM Selective and Radiology.

Fourth year clerkships include: IM, Rural Medicine, Urban Medicine (2 months), EMed, Sub-Internship, Ambulatory Surg/Surg Sub-I, 5 electives.

Near winter break of MS-II you will be placed into rotation groups. This is done by a lottery system...no need to worry about the details yet.

There are 11 rotations groups and each group has 22-25 students in it and it is among these 22-25 students that you will select your rotation site. You are given a list of the core rotations, all of which must be done at the listed sites, along with the hospitals that offer each rotation.

For example...it will look something like this:

Family Medicine
Hospital A - 3 spots
Hospital B - 1 spot
Hospital C - 4 spots
...
Hospital Z - 2 spots

Now, here is where things get tricky. Some rotations have many spots. So lets say Peds has 30 spots...higher likelihood that no one in the group will have to go to their absolutely last choice.

Some rotations ONLY have as many spots as there are students in the group. So lets say Cardiology has 25 spots...each spot will fill up.

There are also MUST FILL sites. For Urban Medicine there are 4 PCOM clinics which MUST fill each of there spots before any other person in the rotation group can select another site. So if there are 20 MUST FILL spots and 24 students, only 4 will get to go somewhere other than a PCOM clinic.

Dont worry...the rotations arent all too restrictive with non-core rotations.

For your electives you can pretty much do anything...and go anywhere. And 5 electives is really pretty nice.

Just as an example, here is a list of some of the places I rotated at:

City Avenue Peds
Roxborough Hospital
Northeastern Hospital
Mercy Catholic Medical
Misericordia
Lankenau Hospital
Abington Hospital
Mercy Suburban Hospital
Surgical Orthopedic Associates
Chestnut Hill Hospital
Frankford Hospital - Bucks County Campus
Sacred Heart Hospital - Allentown

I hope this has helped clarify some of this. Its really not something to worry about just yet. Concentrate on meeting people and passing
