I will definately be going to GA-PCOM next year. Time to go pay my deposit! KYmedic 12-14-2005, 02:39 AM Hey fellow students! My name is Amy and I am a part of the Class of 2009. I am so excited you all are deciding to come to GA-PCOM. If you have any questions about apartments, the school, books or anything you can think of don't hesitate to email me at AmyGe@pcom.edu. I have a lot of experience on apartment finding in the area. If you are interested in townhouses or homes I can help a little with that or direct you to someone who has more experience. Congrats on your acceptance and I look forward to meeting you in August. Amy beano 12-14-2005, 10:25 PM Welcome!!!!! I ditto Amy's offer. B Anderson samdwi 12-17-2005, 09:10 AM I just received my acceptance in the mail today and I am so excited!!!! I will definately be going to GA-PCOM next year. Time to go pay my deposit! There had better be more than just the two of you coming next year! GAdoc 12-21-2005, 05:54 AM I received my acceptance to GA-PCOM just after returning from Thanksgiving. I was thrilled as this is my first acceptance and second year applying. I'm a GA boy and I've got a couple friends in the first class. I do have a couple questions. 1. When will the AOA accredit GA-PCOM? I'd guess residencies will require graduation from an accredited school. 2. Where does it look like 3rd and 4th year rotations will end up being located? 3. Do most of yalls classmates seriously want to do primary care, or are there some planning on neurosurgery at Hopkins? Just wanting to get a feel for how most of the class feels about residency. samdwi 12-21-2005, 05:18 PM I received my acceptance to GA-PCOM just after returning from Thanksgiving. Yo GAdoc, check out above posts for answers to most of your questions. Some answers in brief: 1. By April of 2006, assuming we don't really mess something up. 2. from what we (the students) have been told: sevberal sites in Atl as well as around GA, SC, TN, AL. We may also have Philly sites available for those who want to see their sneeze freeze. 3. Many are interested in primary care fields such as Peds, OB/GYN, Family Practice, and many are not. There a quite a few fans of surgery, internal medicine specialties, emergency med etc as well. From what I know, there are a few radiology nuts. As we are all first-years, I doubt too many people have really nailed down what they want to do. HooahDOc 12-21-2005, 11:56 PM I will be attending next year as well. Hooray! Now some questions :) Does anyone attend classes at the Francis Fong Academy in Norcross? (Used to be in Duluth) I'm trying to find some information about it. Sigung Fong is my Sifu's (teacher) teacher, and one of the very few schools in the south that teaches my style. Are there many affordable homes for rent in the area? My wife, two cats, and creatively-named doberman puppy Dobie will be relocating in June, so apartments are probably a no go. Any word on when the new med center will be opening? My wife should have her GA RN license by the time we move and is applying for jobs at the new hospital. That's about all for now. We are going to try to take a trip back to the area in the next week or so, as I didn't really get a chance to check it out during my interview. Little Bear 01-05-2006, 01:22 PM Hi, everyone...I be interviewing on 1/12 and will be staying in the until 1/14 to see the area surrounding the school. Any suggestions on what to see? GAdoc 01-06-2006, 04:37 AM Hi, everyone...I be interviewing on 1/12 and will be staying in the until 1/14 to see the area surrounding the school. Any suggestions on what to see? Having lived in Georgia my whole life, I can say that Atlanta (which includes Suwanee) is like an oasis. By that I mean it is totally different than any other part of Georgia. I'm not going to say better....just different. You should have no trouble finding things to do. It depends on what you want. The Buckhead area is probably the nicest. You can find awesome malls (like Lennox), and restraunts (Cheescake factory, Dante's Down the Hatch, etc.). The new aquarium has just opened and is supposed to be fantastic. Just check it all out. If it were summer I'd suggest seeing a Braves Game. They're always a lot of fun. Medic813 01-28-2006, 11:16 PM Hi guys, I got my acceptance letter this afternoon :D and I have a big smile on my face, but I'm trying to decide between here and VCOM. I'm 55% PCOM-GA and 45% VCOM, but still thinking hard about it. :( pinkscrubs 01-29-2006, 10:35 AM Hi guys, I got my acceptance letter this afternoon :D and I have a big smile on my face, but I'm trying to decide between here and VCOM. I'm 55% PCOM-GA and 45% VCOM, but still thinking hard about it. :( Congratulations!!! It is exciting isn't it!!! Both VCOM and GA-PCOM are great schools, good luck deciding. The schools are in very different settings. GA-PCOM does not have an attendance policy or dress code. I would ask the schools more questions to help you decide, like where the rotations are going to be, what the curriculums are like, etc. (GA-PCOM has an integrated curriculum, not sure about VCOM) Keep us posted! Medic813 01-29-2006, 12:43 PM When you say that GA has an integrated curriculum do you mean that all classes correlate with each other in reference to what subjects are being taught? This is what I'm thinking: VCOM- 1 Big University setting w/ the availability of using Va Tech resources, 2 Rotations are in smaller places 3rd year and then you have to choose somewhere 4th year (I'm from a small place and have worked in health care here, so I would like to see some big places) However VCOM students are rotating in a lot of one on one settings w physicians and I think that GA students may have more competition w MS4's and Residents at the bigger places. GA- in my opinion had nicer facilities than VCOM, the student body was much more friendly than VCOM, GA has a pt simulator, its closer to home by about 1.5 hrs than VCOM, but I have lots of family in VA (Not that you get time to go home, but I have some aging family members in declining health) I like the absence of the dress code at GA. What kind of other issues should I look at when comparing the 2 programs? :) KYmedic 01-29-2006, 09:14 PM I might be partial because I attend GA - PCOM but I can tell you what I think about the school. I know one important factor that you should consider is the class size. With a class of only 85 students and a total of 170 students in the school the professors will be able to dedicate more time to your learning. I know the anatomy lab facilities are really nice and conducive to learning. Meaning, you only have 6 people on each cadaver. I don't really know how VCOM does their labs. I know that I learned most of my anatomy in the lab because of the small group size. You were correct in the interpretation of integrated learning. We are taught basically the same system in anatomy, primary care skills and OMM at the same time. I think it is an excellent way to teach medicine. PLUS, you have a great group of second years to mentor you next year. We seem to be a very cohesive class that in general wants to help the people who are struggling with the material. I know they are getting together a group of people to help with gross anatomy lab next year to aid in determining what you are dissecting if it is possible with our schedule. We do have the largest OMM facility with a really great professor. Dr. Ehrenfeuter is helpful and more than willing to drop anything he is doing to help out students. He is very approachable and just a kind-hearted individual. We also have two physicians in the area that come to lab and help with manipulations. Lastly, Dr. Evans our vice-dean (head-honcho down here) is very student friendly. His goal is to provide the most student-friendly environment that is conducive to learning. He is easily approachable and listens to your concerns. He is not some far-off head figure that no one can approach for fear of getting struck down by lightening. He also comes into our OMM lab and primary care skills labs to help in teaching us. Call me partial but I really think what they are doing down here in GA is going to result in some great physicians. :D Medic813 01-29-2006, 10:40 PM Amy, Thanks for all of the info, it has been very helpful. I was also wondering how classes are scheduled, meaning do you get breaks after tests. For example at VCOM, they have a block system where they go 11 weeks on and have a week off followed by 5 weeks on and 1 week off for the rest of the first year. How does GA compare to this? HooahDOc 01-30-2006, 06:09 PM Anyone have the timeline on stuff for the GA campus? My check has yet to be cashed and I have yet to receive the packet that the PA people are getting. pinkscrubs 01-30-2006, 06:29 PM Anyone have the timeline on stuff for the GA campus? My check has yet to be cashed and I have yet to receive the packet that the PA people are getting. I would not be too concerned. I interviewed in October, was accepted 12/7 and mailed my check 12/8. It was cashed 1/6/2006, almost a month later. I called Aisha and she said they are just slow to cash checks. I haven't received a package either. I would not be too worried. If it takes much longer maybe you should call to check on it. I wish you could pay with a credit card so that you know they get the payment right away!!! HooahDOc 01-30-2006, 06:51 PM I would not be too concerned. I mailed my check over the holidays and it was received (confirmed three times) on Jan 5. *shrug* I guess so long as they have it that's all that matters. KYmedic 01-30-2006, 11:10 PM Well, I am not going to candy coat this at all but the first term was ridiculous in the scheduling. We had hardly any days off and it really caused a stink. The student body brought this up to the dean and the schedule for second term was more student friendly. Our days during first term were 8 - 12 with 10 minute breaks for each 50 minutes of lecture. Then 12 - 1 was lunchtime which is a significant amount of time to get lunch out or eat in the cafe. Then 1 - 2 lecture and lab 2 - 5 usually consisted of lab like gross anatomy, omm or pcs. Usually on Fridays we were out at 12 and some Mondays were the same way. This term the mornings are either from 9 - 12 with 10 minute breaks for 50 minutes of lecture OR 8 - 10 break from 10 - 11 then 11 - 12 lecture and 12 -1 is lunch. This term the lab for OMM and PCS are only 1 - 4. Usually Mondays and Fridays are short days being we get out at 12. Tuesdays and Thursdays are days of OMM and PCS lab till 4. Wednesday used to be a short day till Medicine and Society came into the picture. The labs for OMM and PCS are split into two separate groups so you are only in lab for 1.5 hours. You rotate weekly between being the early group and the late group. Last semester we did not get any days off before the exams which was really overwhelming. The student body raised concerns about this and this term it is different. The first exam we were not tested on the information presented two days before the test. The second exams were midterms and that took up a whole week of scheduling so we did not have classes at all that week. That week included a practical for OMM, written exam for OMM and written exam for Preclinical. This seemed to be ample amount of time for everyone to study for these tests. Our PCS instructor moved his midterm to after Christmas break which was greatly appreciated by the student body. The third exam was on a Monday so we had a full weekend to study new material. The fourth exam or finals for all classes are all in one week again with no classes between. I don't forsee any problems with this scheduling style. Between the first and second term we did not get any additional days off. We again raised concerns and this term we get at least one day off (a Friday) before we have to start the third term. First term was 12 weeks and this term is 14 weeks. We do not have the schedule for third term yet. I don't know how VCOM does their scheduling but we started school on Aug 14th and we get out for summer break on June 6th. We get about 9 weeks off for summer. We have a week long spring break also. Our Christmas break was only two weeks long. I don't know if this is true but I heard that the reason our schedule is so busy this first year is because they want to make the last two terms of our second year light. This is to help us study for COMLEX. Which I personally don't mind. I also know that Dr. Evans promised to bring in a well-known reviewer for the COMLEX to aid in our studying. Which is another plus I see in coming to the school. :) If you have anymore questions just send them my way and I will answer them as soon as I can. And I will be as honest as I can. If that whole schedule thing confused you I could send you the schedule for our first term and second term via email. Just give me your address. Little Bear 01-31-2006, 05:33 AM Hi Guys! I received my acceptance letter yesterday....YEAH!... :D The check for the deposit is in the mail and am looking forward to August.. babloo 02-07-2006, 10:35 PM Where do you as Ist year students go for clinicals? Example WVSOM student go to a hospital right across the campus, NSU students get clinical exposure in the 1st and 2nd year at various sites also. During my interview at PCOM I forgot to ask about clinics in the 1st and 2nd year? Also, when will the rotation sites be confirmed? These are my two big concerns about PCOM, GA. What if rotation sites are not established for all students because of the competition aroun: More House, Emory, Mercer etc? It is possible. One university in GA is facing this problem of finding enough rotations for all its students. BMW19 02-07-2006, 10:45 PM We do not have much clinical exposure 1st year in terms of going to clinics or hospitals. Are curriculum is all integrated so we are learning a great deal of clinicial medicine interspersed within our basic sciences. In addition we have had some great guest lectures from physicians in the field. This may change if/when we get our own clinic on campus which may be in the works for the future. A few of the clubs on campus have gotten involved with volunteer efforts so you could go thru that route. About rotations. We have been assured that 95% of our rotation sites have been confirmed (CORE anyway). I can only tell you that this is what we are being told, but I trust our Dean on a very high level. Beyond that I don't know what more we can say about 3rd year because no one has gotten there yet! Hope this helps a little BMW- Where do you as Ist year students go for clinicals? The Osteopathic Institute of the South had a network of clinical rotations set up in GA for ten years now. They were trying to get more doctors to rotate down here to get them to stay down here and work. This network is still intact and it is what we are going to be using to do our clinical rotations. I think the main thing they are working on now is our in-hospital rotations. HooahDOc 02-15-2006, 07:38 AM My wife and I may be looking for a roomie this fall. We will be renting a spacious home and would like to take on a roommate to share some of the costs. The home should be 4ish bedrooms and 2.5 or more baths, close to 2000+ sq ft. Anyone interested should be prepared to deal with two sweet dogs, two cats, and a married couple. :D Be prepared to spend around $400-$600 a month. Anyone interested PM me and I will update with the actual home and more details this summer. My wife prefers a female roommate (I swear this wasn't my idea!) and will be working as a RN. I am anxiously awaiting news myself, I interviewed 2/28. Does anyone know how often the committee meets? Sell yourself. Know your strengths and your weaknesses. Be prepared to address both of them in the interview. The following only a guess, only some one on the admissions committe knows how they rank these items. Undergrad grades and MCAT scores are probably toward the top of the list and then experience in medicine/patient contact and volunteerism are factored in based on your role and time commitment. You didn't mention letters of recommendation. I sure those factor, too. Spankete87 03-07-2006, 07:56 AM Congrats to everyone on acceptances! I am anxiously awaiting news myself, I interviewed 2/28. Last year the school kept a list of roomates and also someone started a roomate forum. I think it is Angela you can email at GA-PCOM. This past year I have lived at the Reserve at Sugarloaf and love it! Very upscale and gated, but expensive at $855 for a 2 bedroom. These apartments are about 5 minutes from the school across from the Sugarloaf Country Club. My fiance (he is a 1st year student) and I are moving to a house this month that is a little closer to the school. It has 4 bedrooms so we are thinking about renting out 1 room. It has its own private entrance, harwood floors and enough space for a bed, desk, etc. Please PM me if you are interested. tsazmand 03-07-2006, 01:04 PM Congrats to everyone on acceptances! The money mostly goes toward tuition but there is a little left over to go towards other expenses. Most students get private loans to cover living expenses. Some students do work study for extra money. Also, there are many students who have army scholarships and get a stipend to pay for living expenses. There are some need based scholarships but I think it is not much and is based on your parents income (no matter how old you are). Those of us without army scholarships can expect to have a lot of debt after graduation. No fancy cars or houses any time soon. $40,000 for 4 years plus interest will be a least $1400 a month for 10 years :( I wish I had a rich uncle!!! KYmedic 03-08-2006, 04:41 PM Could any current students post what the budget was for this year? This is the best breakdown I can give you of my financial situation. I currently live in Sugar Mills Apartment which is 5 minutes from the school. And very close to numerous shopping centers but is also really quiet and gated. We have a brand new 4000 sq foot gym with great equipment, TV on each cardio machine for individual entertainment. I know the school has a nice gym but sometimes I don't want to workout there cause I already spend so much time there to begin with. My apartment is around 1380 sq ft with 2 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. It came with a large brand new washer and dryer and our water bill is included in the rent and is not variable. (Some apartment complexes do not keep the water bill a constant but takes an average of three months to determine the charge for water.) I live with another medical student and the rent is $889 per month. Here is a run down of the bills we have: Rent - $889 Electric - $55.00 (my roommate likes the heat on 73, she's from FL) Gas - $100.00 (water heater only) Cable/Internet - $84.90 TOTAL - $564.45 per month (I took half of everything) These bills are variable for everyone Cell Phone - $70.00 Car Insurance - $107.89 Car Payment - $200.00 TOTAL - $377.89 per month Textbooks this year - $1,200.00 (aprox) Equipment (Otoscope, Opthalmascope...) - $750.00 (aprox) Tuition and Fees - $34,122 Student Fee - $150 Insurance from the school - $2,196 TOTAL - $38,418 The federal government will give you a $38,500 (this increases to about 46,000 during your 3rd and 4th year) of loans some subsidized and some unsubsidized and I think that is based on income. Yes, parents' income is taken into account even though you may not live with them unless you are married. The school gives some need-based scholarships which mine is $500 per semester. If you have reasons why your parents' income should not be considered, you can write to the financial aid office. I did that and I have a need based scholarship. I also signed up for a private educational loan from Wachovia Bank. The interest rate on that is based on your credit score and if you can get your parents to co-sign you might get a lower interest rate based on their credit score. I am receiving $18,000 per year. TOTAL AMOUNT IN LOANS - $56,500 TOTAL COST - $49,726.08 Leaving a sum of - $6,773.92 for misc. expenses Now this is for a full year of rent and bills. We have the summer off so I plan on working part-time during the summer so my funds will increase. The loan disbursements come out in three increments which are in relation to each term ending. Allow they say the disbursement is on one day, it usually takes a week before the money will show up in your account. It is doable but takes a budget. Also remember that you will probably want to attend conventions (hotel cost and convention fee cost), be a member of clubs ($10 - $50), buy t-shirts for clubs ($20), buy a OMM table ($325 good for practicing on innocent victims) and other things. Some students decided to buy a house and rent it out. That is a good way to cut back on rent costs but remember that also increases the cost of electric and gas heating. Some Good Advice I can give you: 1) Get a roommate - Like someone else said, give your name to Angela Dickson. 2) Get a place close to the school - The farther you are away the more time you have to spend on the road in traffic. (UGH) 3) Get a place close to shopping centers - The less time you have to use driving to run errands the better. These three things will help alleviate unneeded stress and time is the most valuable asset to a medical student. Hope this helps and it is not too long. Amy KYmedic 03-08-2006, 04:48 PM yeah the committee meets this friday. I had an interview yesterday. They said they will mail us their decision in two weeks. Hopefully ill get accepted to both, but im not sure which one i like better yet I know GA-PCOM is going to have a fellowship for those after their fourth or second year (I can't remember) to stay at the school and help with OMM. They will get a stipend to live on and medical insurance free. For doing this for one year you get one year of tuition forgiveness. The only downside is you have to wait an extra year to graduate. I was just wondering if there is a list of books that correspond to the required courses, or if we were on our own with finding a book that we like?? Amy I assume from your above post that the school budgets around $58,000 / yr for students? I'm specifically looking for what the maximum the school sets is, since I am eligible to take the difference between the value of my HPSP scholarship and whatever the school says we can have. If there is a list, could sombody show me where to find it? Thank you so much guys!! And congrats!!! We received our book list about a week before school started. They sent a whole list of books that were required and recommended for the whole first year. I would not recommend buying all the books for the whole year because it changes (at least it did for us). They will send this to you in an email to your new PCOM account. Don't expect to get it right now. I do recommend getting various anatomy books for your first term. Each book has different views and different ways of describing things. Some books are more thorough and some are better with pictures. HooahDOc 03-09-2006, 10:30 PM The maximum the school sets is $56,833 as the maximum amount you can receive in loans. That seems a bit low given the cost of living for the area, but luckily is spot on to what I had anticipated. Thanks for the info. Yes, we know that is low for the cost of living. One of our students this year actually faught with Philly and the bank and got an increase of I think $6,000 this year. He had to make a descriptive list of all his expenses and turn it into the bank I think. It took him about 2 months of pulling teeth to get them to budge. doctorjoy 03-10-2006, 04:24 PM SO when do you start receiving information for the school (financial aid, schedules, etc....) You guys are at a big advantage, because you have us to tell you which books are good and which aren't so don't waste time now trying to figure it out. But if you really are gung-ho and just can't wait, you can't go wrong with Netter's Atlas, Rohen and Yakochi's (real pics) Atlas. We used a book called Atlas of Clinical Gross Anatomy which I personally liked b/c it had real pics, drawings and a brief synopsis of Anatomy gone wrong and not just pics like the other two books. Who is coming with a family? Single? Coming straight from undergraduate? Took sometime off before going? etc, etc... :D Spankete87 03-12-2006, 10:39 PM I'll start things off - I'm Lori, 25, single and obviously did not come straight from undergrad. I graduated in Dec 2003 from UNC-CH and have been doing research at Duke in Alzheimers/dementia related diseases and traumatic brain injury since. I did work as a medical assistant in a derm office for 6 months in there and can't wait to get back to patient care! Mice just aren't good company. ;) I love to hike, snowboard, scuba dive, read, listen to music, and generally hang out with people. I'll also use this opportunity to also say that I'll be looking for a roommate when I move down to GA in the beginning of August. If anyone is interested let me know! :) doctorjoy 03-13-2006, 08:48 AM LEt me put mine up since I started with the questions. My name is Liza, 28. I have 4 step children; 3 currently live with me. I won't be able to bring my family with me  the two oldest boys have scholarships at their high school so I am not moving them becuase they are in great programs. I want to find a townhouse or large apartment for my family to visit whenever they like. I am teaching gross anatomy and general biology at a private institution. I like to crochet, read, sing, have lots of fun and ready to kick but in medical school. Spankete87 03-14-2006, 09:38 PM where's the rest of our class? ;) Oh wait, it's spring break isn't it? I enjoy running, snorkeling, scuba diving, hiking, walking, flying, and skiing. Spankete87 03-16-2006, 09:01 AM Is GA-PCOM H/P/F or do they give letter grades? JSlammit 03-16-2006, 10:06 AM Is GA-PCOM H/P/F or do they give letter grades? Hey Spankete, Grading is the same as in Philly - Numerical grades only. Passing is >70. At the end of 4th year students are ranked in groups of 5, and that whole group gets the same rank. (i.e. the top 5 are considered #1, next 5 - #2, etc.) But don't worry about your grades... it's more important that you learn the material for the long run (and for boards, which matters more). As long as u pass, you'll still be Dr. Lori Spankete (or whatever your last name is) ;) ~J Spankete87 03-16-2006, 10:27 AM Hey Spankete, Grading is the same as in Philly - Numerical grades only. I had some questions too: 1. I was thinking about renting a single apartment for the first year at least to try and find someone I will be comfortable living with for the next year...BUT I want to live in an apartment complex where a lot of the students live (or at least a good number of them)...I also prefer a gated community and one that is fairly new...any suggestions on where students like to live? also close to the school is important too. 2. yeah I just forgot my other questions... oh and about me: I'm Nancy, 22 (the youngest so far????), graduating from Emory this semester, and certainly don't mind staying in the ATL for at least 4 more years (I'm very attached to my family though so I might need a little adjusting time and some comforting from you guys :D ). doctorjoy 03-22-2006, 07:57 AM Well I just mailed off the 2000 dollar deposit today :barf: :wow: HooahDOc 03-22-2006, 09:29 AM Well I just mailed off the 2000 dollar deposit today :barf: :wow: I mailed mine last week sometime. If you are interested in apt living then you should check this place out. Not sure which way to lean. On the one hand, LECOM - PA has been around for a little while and has established rotations, but their administration is apathetic at best. PCOM -GA has an awesome administration, from what I hear at least. Do they currently have a list of rotation sites that we can see? I know that most schools do, but PCOM - GA being so new I'm not sure. As it is my understanding, our CORE rotations must be limited to what the school allows, but what about elective rotations? I know LECOM allows you to set up elective rotations to any hospital in the nation as long as you do the paperwork yourself. I'm considering radiology or anesthesiology, and would like to put myself in the best position to get there. Thanks for anyone's input! I was faced with the same dilemma- LECOM-PA or GA-PCOM.....And eventually I decided that GA-PCOM was for me. I was nervous at first about the newness of the school, but with the philly campus to back it up, I realized it isn't REALLY a totally new school. I mean the cirriculum is pulled from the philly campus - which has proven to be respectable. In the end, Georgia just felt right to me. It's closer to my family, it's still in the south, and it has a critical need for rural primary care physicians - which is what I want to do. From what I've heard, because of the shortage of doctors in GA, PCOM is really welcomed in the community. Whatever you decide, I don't think you can go wrong. Both places will have their pros and cons, but both will make you into what you want. TO me, GA-PCOM would just get me there in the way that was more to my liking. Good Luck! I know a good number of people are looking for roommates, and it could save you a lot of money since the apartments in this area are so overpriced. And about the facebook thing... we tried to create a group but never got it to work (I think the groups are tied to your undergrad institution). There is a PCOM 2009 group on Myspace, though. DO NOT RENT AT STERLING RIVERSIDE APARTMENTS (Did I say that already?) Also, I have a brand-spanking new Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy with CD I need to get rid of (still in plastic shrink-wrap). Any future GA-PCOM students who would like to get rid of $65 (including shipping), PM me. For those who may be unfamiliar, the Netter's Atlas is the gold-standard in anatomy - and you wil need it for first year, and then keep it on your shelf for the rest of your careers for ready reference. candyland 04-01-2006, 12:21 PM so I received my packet with all the financial aid info and other stuff...I tried to log in into nucleus and it worked but once I'm logged in and I try to click on "email" "calander" or "groups" it doesn't work and it logs me out right away...all the other clickable icons in there are working fine though...is anyone else having the same problems? can anyone help? thanks, Nancy BMW19 04-01-2006, 04:30 PM Nancy, You may have to create a separate login and password for your email. Also, when do we need to send transcripts in, and to what mailing address do we send them? Thanks so much guys, and I hope you all enjoy the spring/summer! I dont see why you wouldn't want to go to orientation... I think its actually mandatory anyway. Here's why you should go: 1. Adjusting to med school is tough and crazy. You'll get info and activities/events to help you get settled in more quickly than we did. 2. You will set up your email and network accts, fix any probs with financial aid, insurance, sign up for student clubs, etc. etc. 2. You get to meet your profs, faculty, classmates, and some of us OMS-IIs. Personally, I think med school would be impossible to survive if it weren't for the great peeps in the class. 3. The school, SGA, and SOMA are working together to have one or two outings to give you guys a chance to hang out and relax before classes start. 4. you might get your first assignment (probably medical vocab, as in our case) So, in other words, go to orientation. As far as your transcripts and stuff... you'll have to email Aisha deBerry. I assume do it as soon as your new one comes out. gobeavers 04-05-2006, 09:32 PM I dont see why you wouldn't want to go to orientation... I think its actually mandatory anyway. If you are looking for PCOM-PA match lists, here is one from 2004 http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=247214 Just search on this site and I'm sure you can find what you're looking for. Spankete87 04-06-2006, 01:58 PM what do you guys think? and dont be biased!! please!! You are asking on the GA-PCOM 2010 thread - if you would like unbiased opinions, you might want to ask this in the pre-osteo forum. ;) Personally, I'd say go for GA-PCOM - it's a great school!! No bias of course.... :p BMW19 04-06-2006, 02:29 PM There are several reasons why I do not believe you should go to a carribean school over a DO school: 1) Med school is tough enough without having to worry about the stress of -island living (might seem appealing at first, but it gets old quick and most of the islands with med schools except for like AUC are in a 3rd world country). You will not have a support system i.e. family to call or go to easily when stressed, few amenities that you are used to in the US. Very expensive to bring goods into a carribean island. I have heard of people at Ross that have lost electricity for days at a time! Don't need this, med school is stressful enough. 2) The carribean schools in my opinion, are there to make money. Even the "best" ones like SGU. The faculty could really care less about you (just what I have heard). Our faculty cares about the students. Everyone of your classmates will be cut-throat to try and get that "best residency". Our classmates help each other out. 3) It is my understanding that rotations are a free for all, "set them up yourself" which means you will be calling around the country to even try to get that Surgery rotation to look good for that "best residency". More stress. 4) I think there are one or two states that still give carribean students a problem coming back to practice. Minor detail, but not if you want to get licensed there! 5) This point people may argue. I have a brother that was chief resident and now chooses residencies for his program. He has told me that carribean students are always looked at last (even SGU). It is 1) Allopathic 2) DO 3) Carribean. Those few residencies that you heard at Yale or whatever were prob. very slim shots and the students may have even known people there. Bottom line: Although people think DO students have a stigma, we are treated like American Med. students because that is what we are. You can be a great Dr. coming out of the carribean but how stressful is it getting there? Bottom line: Go DO whether it is our school or somwhere else. BMW- ok, so here is a question for everyone... i got into PCOM-GA, but i also got into st.george's in the carribbean. i'm from atlanta so i have family here that i'd probably live with, so i'd save a ton of money that way. but i know that sgu grads have received some pretty prestigious residencies (harvard, yale, stanford, etc). i'm trying to make up my mind...i'm just very concerned about getting the best residency placement possible. what do you guys think? and dont be biased!! please!! sketches 04-06-2006, 02:30 PM ok, so here is a question for everyone... i got into PCOM-GA, but i also got into st.george's in the carribbean. i'm from atlanta so i have family here that i'd probably live with, so i'd save a ton of money that way. but i know that sgu grads have received some pretty prestigious residencies (harvard, yale, stanford, etc). i'm trying to make up my mind...i'm just very concerned about getting the best residency placement possible. what do you guys think? and dont be biased!! please!! I am extremely biased, but go to GA-PCOM. Not only do you have ties to the area, you will get a better education here. Don't let a few anecdotes about prestigious residencies lead you to believe that you will have the same experience. Besides, who is to say that you wouldn't end up at a top tier program after graduating from GA-PCOM :) Woops, I didnt mean orientation, I meant the few dates that they have set up in june, one is for financial aid and one is for somthing else. I decided to attend GA-PCOM because of its cohesiveness amongst the student body and the friendly environment. I'm just now jumping on the introduction-to-myself bandwagon here. Hey, better late than never. I graduated in August 2004 from North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega, GA with a B.S. in Biology/Pre-med. I took time off to get married and let my wife, Miranda, finish her masters in Occupational Therapy. Now she gets to be my sugar momma and support me while I attend med school! What an awesome deal! I am 24 (25 when school starts) and my wife is 25 (26 when school starts). We have no children and do not plan to attempt any until my residency. However, we are getting some good practice with our two dogs (a Pomeranian, Tucker, and Jack Russell, Duke). Until school begins, I am a licensed insurance agent in Gainesville, GA. This job has fully taught me that my place is in medicine, and medicine only. Anyway, I look forward to joining/starting lots of clubs and organizations with you guys, and to meeting my new friends at our New Student Reception on April 28! :D I hope to find someone in our class that likes to run and workout as much as me, because I am going to need some fellow exercise buffs to keep me from getting lazy with the workload that awaits us! Drugtech 04-13-2006, 10:22 PM I decided to attend GA-PCOM because of its cohesiveness amongst the student body and the friendly environment. Now that respect has been given, be prepared for the class of 2010 to put up a first year performance that makes the class of 2009 fail in comparison! Who's with me?! Just don't remember that comment when I come begging for help and guidance throughout the year! :D In all honesty, I do look forward to meeting all of you, working with all of you, and borrowing your brains and experience during our first year. HooahDOc- I will be attending this year and was accepted for the HPSP scholarship through the Air Force...then turned in down after a lengthy decision with my wife. Will this be your first time in military dealings, and when do you start the Army's version of commissioned officer training? I still wonder if I made the right decision concerning the scholarship...? BMW- Good point BMW...and I do plan on taking any used texts off your hands (or at least the ones that I'll actually need). Speaking of which- don't you plan to keep your old texts for COMLEX prep, or is the school going to assist with COMLEX prep? As helpful as everyone has portrayed the professors and staff, I wouldn't be shocked if they planned on doing a free month-long review course for it. I wouldn't argue with it :D So, do you guys have time to get together for basketball/flag football games and stuff like that, or does everyone rush out of school each afternoon to get a jump on studies? I would like to have some fun while I'm here afterall! rwjuf 04-17-2006, 09:54 AM This is my first time on this forum deal and it has nothing to do with what ya'll are talking about but are any of the people attending 2010 going to this meet and greet thing on April 28th, if you are what kind of dress is it, I'm pretty sure it isn't formal but I don't really want to show up in jeans and sandals if it is. We are going to meet up at the new student reception and are going to look at houses on that Saturday. If anyone is interested or has any questions, you can PM me or send me an email at durha015@mc.duke.edu. I'll be posting this on nucleus as well. Oh - we will have both a dog and a cat living in the house, so you must be dog and cat friendly! :) Thanks guys! Lori JSlammit 04-18-2006, 11:25 AM Hey everyone! If any 2010s or 2009s are interested in living w/ a couple of 2009s (Corey Brown and myself) shoot me a private message. I need room to stretch my legs, grill out, and play host and my little 1BR isn't cuttin' it. I have some great houses and townhouses in mind, but I need an idea of how many are interested for a 3/4/5BR. Females, Males, dogs... are more than welcome as long as you'd make a good roommate. We're really laid back and easy to get along w/; unfortunately, we'll be in DC (w/ half of the class) when ya'll are here for the meet & greet. Hit me up w/ a private message and I'll give you more info. We'll stay in touch. Thanks! ~Judd Salamat samdwi 04-18-2006, 09:20 PM Yeah, I wouldn't be too worried about dress at the meet n' greet. Although I'm not the one you want dressing advice from. For whoever will be apartment hunting when they're here for the meet/greet: Do NOT rent at "sterling riverside" apts on Duluth Hwy. DO check out the "The Preserve at Legacy Park" on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd (ask for Amber). If you sign a lease at any of these places, let them know Sam and Anand sent you. We get a nifty referral fee for it. On another note, even though about half the class won't be there when you guys come visit, we will try to make sure all the clubs/organizations have some information to provide to you. Below are the organizations currently active at GA-PCOM: 1. Emergency Medicine Club - by far the coolest club. 2. Pediatric Club - they're called P.L.A.Y. - I forget what the acronym means though - but still cool. 4. Athletic Club - they keep us moving and bruised. 3. Surgery Club - SOSA (Student Osteop. Surgery Ass.) - don't ask about the "Iowa Trip". 4. UAAO - Undergrad. Academy of American Osteopathy - our certified OMM nuts - under the command of Nut-in-Chief Dr. Ehrenfeuchter - he's groovy - ask him about the "Harrowgate String Band". 5. Pain Management (ask to speak with "Chow Time") 6. SNMA (Student National Medical Association) - student chapter of the NMA - represents mainly minority medical professionals - Their leader is "Out Of Order" (inside joke...). 7. SOMA - Student Osteop. Medical Association - the student/resident portion of the AOA - they are the 800-pound gorilla of organizations - they're the reason 40 of us are going to Wshngtn DC on April 28th. 8. GA-PCOM Student Governement Association & various committees - (the Three Stooges meet the Marx Brothers - they're a weird group to say the least). 9. CMDA - Christian Medical Dental Assn. - another very active group. 10. we have an unofficial alternative medicine club (will be officialized soon), and a couple other unofficial groups such as "GA-PCOM GAPI-AAPI-FLAPI" (don't ask, thanks), the international club etc. 11. forgive me If I forgot anyone. Spankete87 04-20-2006, 10:37 PM Does anyone know what they are going to present in the financial aid workshop is in June? I mean obviously they are going to do financial aid stuff, but what exactly? Private loan stuff? Federal stuff? Budgeting? The reason why I ask is because my family is going on vacation on either the 9th or the 10th of June and I'm trying to see if I need to figure out a way to do both or if it's something I wouldn't necessarily need. Unfortunately I can't change my family's vacation plans...... anxiousnadd 04-21-2006, 04:34 PM another random question for first years... does anyone think it would be worth it for me to buy a pda or pda cell phone for my first couple years? i'm not sure how the schedules are. i'm a pretty forgetful guy, so i figured i might try one to keep my on track. or maybe i should just get a calendar...hahaha... does anyone think its worth it or will it be just a waste of my money? samdwi 04-21-2006, 07:25 PM another random question for first years... does anyone think it would be worth it for me to buy a pda or pda cell phone for my first couple years? i'm not sure how the schedules are. i'm a pretty forgetful guy, so i figured i might try one to keep my on track. or maybe i should just get a calendar...hahaha... does anyone think its worth it or will it be just a waste of my money? IMO, it would be waste of money to get that at this point. I don't even have a laptop, and I'm doing fine without it. I plan on getting a laptop late in second year, and PDA probably later. A calender/planner would work just as well. That said, having one won't hurt - until you get used to it and then lose it - and then lose your mind. JSlammit 04-21-2006, 09:41 PM FYI: Samd didn't mention that there's going to be a Spors Medicine club soon (AOASM).... as soon as I get my act together b/w house hunting, inventorying Dr. Gantt's teeth specimens, and falling asleep between sentences in microbio slides. I already have two more trips to the area and can't really afford a third on the 28th. I'm an HPSP recipient so the FA session is pretty pointless for me to attend. Now on to more pressing matters. Does the school mail out a booklist before classes begin? My wife and I will be moving in late June or early July and I won't be working until school starts, so I would like to look over some of the texts for the heck of it. BMW19 04-23-2006, 11:25 AM Yeah a bit of a logistical oversight on their part, but honestly I don't think they realized how many people were going up to DC. Hoah, Don't bother looking things over before August. Enjoy your last few months of freedom before you enter 7 years of no freedom! Besides, every professor tests differently and you won't know what to read and what to skip over. I believe we started Anatomy on the arm. Memorize the bones, all the muscles, all the places muscle connect to the bones and the nerves of the arm and what muscles they innervate. You could probably check out a book somewhere about this stuff. The anatomy book we used for last year was grays anatomy. But dont buy it yet because Im sure there are alot of first years willing to sell it for cheaper and probably more willing to spend some time giving you lots of good advice if you buy some books from them. If you know every thing about the arm and maybe even the back too then the first test will be a little easier. but beyond that, you are just wasting your time for sure. Anyways, I visited the school once and really loved many things about it...I am an senior at Emory right now and PCOM-GA is my top choice. I was debating to take a yr off and do some post-bacc work for a yr at home in Chicago to maybe help my application for re-applying for some local schools, but if I got in to PCOM-GA, I would go...any thoughts? Grays anatomy for Students by Drake, but if you want to study before class you can use almost any anatomy book that goes into enough detail and has good pics. Another book that alot of people used in the class was Moores Clinically oriented Anatomy book. If a library doent have one of these 2 books then there are many others that will work fine for some preanatomy study. OK, so I went to the reception yesterday. It was a lot of fun and very reassuring as far as the school. I figured out who at least two of you are. Nancy, I sat at your table...do you know who I am? I'll give you a hint...I was the only one there with a Y chromosome. BMW19, I talked to you for like 30 minutes before the open house even started. I learned who you are from Dana. Will see you all later in the summer or fall. candyland 04-29-2006, 02:55 PM Nancy, I sat at your table...do you know who I am? Drugtech 04-29-2006, 11:28 PM I can probably speak for a good number of us first years in that we wish we had had a reception like y'all got. It's nice to go ahead and start breaking the ice/finding roomates/finding places to live. I know I got to hang with a few of y'all this weekend off campus, and that was really cool. We're excited to show next year's class how we do it GAPCOM style here in the dirty south! DrGreenEyes1 04-30-2006, 07:00 PM Hey everyone…I’m getting close to cracking everyone’s screen name. GA doc & Candyland, I also sat at your table and introduced you guys –oh gosh, I almost wrote ya’ll instead of you guys….the south is already sucking me in. First off, I’m so very glad the school hosted an open house/reception. What a treat to meet everyone. Kudos to the second year students who stayed back from DC to share their experience at GA-PCOM with us, and lead us on an exciting scavenger hunt. An extra shout out to DrugTech and Josh for rallying up the new kids for a fun Friday night out. It made house hunting early the following morning rough (although very successful)! For those who missed the exciting event, don’t worry I have no doubt there will be plenty more fun to participate in. I’m tempted to scribble myself on a future nomination list for social chair- class of 2010….Oh yeah, the day our syllabus arrives will be the day social chair-2009 and I will be coordinating the social lives of PCOM-GA students and getting us into trouble when time permits. It was awesome meeting everyone and thanks again to 2009 for their hospitality. doctorjoy 05-01-2006, 06:14 AM I enjoyed the reception also. :) I really did not get a chance to figure out anyone who is on SDN who went to the reception. Not really...my dad is an admin for a school district, and his entire job, for the most part, deals with technology for all the schools in a really big county. Thus, he's had quite a bit of experience with all things computer-related (and every other piece of electronic equipment Circuit City can make...I think he blew some of my inheritance on his recent purchase of a HUGE flat screen high def top-o'-the-line TV). Anyway, he tells the schools what computers to purchase, and he is the go-to guy in his office for all the other school district employees. I asked him back in November about tablets, because I was pushing for a new computer for Christmas. He got this huge look of disgust on his face and said that several people in his office have them, and that they are, in a word, horrible. He just said that they seem really neat and convenient, but that people were always having ridiculous problems with them even after just a few months of ownership. He said the software is faulty and the things crash a lot. So...that might just be one brand (I did not get that info...), but he said he is really displeased at their performance. Thus, under the tree I had a brand new, shiny Dell widescreen laptop, and I love it. I'd personally think about holding off on a tablet for a few years...give the technology a chance to improve on itself. I think they will be fantastic one day, but for right now a laptop is fine for you. All of our lectures are on powerpoint, but our professors print the slides for us to have during class, and they post the file online. I have only noticed a handful of people actually taking notes on their computers, and I'd say I typically only see about 25-30 students with laptops in class every day anyhow, out of 83, so you should be fine with that, or even a desktop. I wouldn't count on the school's computers yet...they are having issues that are still in need of some correction! Hope this helps.... AB BMW19 05-01-2006, 08:57 PM My take on the issue: Yes the Insurance is expensive Yes it is great coverage (I paid 5 bucks for a good drug a few weeks ago) It comes out of your student loans so, why not? If the government wants to pay for my expensive insurance for now I'll let em. If you can get it thru your sig. other for free that is the best deal of all!! BMW- I enjoyed the reception also! Spankete87 05-09-2006, 06:25 PM So I have a question for all of those who have been through year 1 at GA-PCOM. My mom wants to take my father to a musical for his birthday towards the end of September (sept 23). My mom would like for all of us to go. My parents live in North Carolina ~6 hour drive from Atlanta. My question is - is this reasonable for me to agree to? Does anyone know if this would fall around our first round of tests? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of telling her no right now just to be safe, but I really would like to be here for my dad's birthday if it's possible. Thanks! Lori Well, I can tell you that we had our first Anatomy test on Fri 9/9, and our second test on or around Wed 9/28(give or take). However, there really is no guaranteed way of telling the changes they decide to make, and all those small things. I wish I had more to tell you besides that. Maybe you can find someone to go to NC w/ you that weekend, and if it happens to be a test weekend, then you can all split the driving and still study in the car? Believe me, the unsurity (a word?) of when your tests will be for the upcoming term will often reak havoc with any long term planning you attempt next year. Been there, and will continue to be there. Thanks for the input. I kind of thought it would be really hard for anyone to tell me anything this far in advance. If I do decide to go home, I think I'll see if my parents will fly me home ;) I could pretty much study the entire time if I flew. Unfortunately I can't study in the car. BMW19 05-10-2006, 06:40 AM Don't change your entire life because of exams. You should go and just plan to push it extra hard the week before the exam (if there is one). Honestly, I got married in the middle of term one (not my choice obviously, but isnt that way it always is!). I freaked out for like 3 weeks and then realized that we had half day on that Friday and it was in between tests. Obviously I would not recommend taking weekend trips to Vegas on a regular basis, but to plan ahead for one day with your dad I don't think is going to ruin your medical career. Just my opin. If I do decide to go home, I think I'll see if my parents will fly me home ;) I could pretty much study the entire time if I flew. Unfortunately I can't study in the car. I personally don't think flying is a great option either. My hometown is also about a 6 to 6.5 hour drive away from the school (in SC). Anyway, at Thanksgiving, my dad bought me a ticket (~$500 w/taxes). We thought that it would be a quick and easy way to get home. Yeah...not so much. First of all, the airport is at the very least 50 minutes away (according to Mapquest), but it took my roomate almost 1.5 hrs to get me there (and she drives pretty fast). Granted, this was a holiday weekend, but traffic is pretty much always bad, unless you fly out at 4a.m. or something. My actual airport experience (security, ticket, etc) was surprisingly quick and efficient. But it's a huge airport, and I had several flight problems. Even without the delays and overbookings I had to deal with, both flights total (I had a 40 min layover) took about two hours. Then there's the whole FAA-get-to-the-airport-atleast-an-hour-early thing. In the end, it took me longer to get home than if I had just driven, and it was much too expensive. And maybe you are better at concentrating than I, but studying on a crowded airplane with kids crying and flight attendants running up and down the aisles seems near impossible to me. You said you are from NC, so if you are flying to Charlotte Douglas Int'l, then I doubt you'd have a layover. But, I'm just telling you to remember the fact that traffic is lousy, the airport isn't right next door, it is a huge international hub with high security, and it is expensive, before you fly home. Other people may have better stories (I did fly out two days before Thanksgiving...) but I'll never fly anywhere that's within a 6 or 7 hr drive again. It's just not worth all the stress and hassle. I've driven home several times since then, and it is such an easy trip. And it only costs about $60 in gas round-trip (for a mid-size sedan). You didn't say what city in NC you are from, but I am sure you can make it home by interstate for a good portion of the drive. I agree with BMW too...just plan to study a little harder the week before you leave, or make sure you are completely prepared for all the other tests, which will pad your overall grade. Hope this helps... AB DrGreenEyes1 05-10-2006, 06:41 PM I thought I would share my apartment hunting experience with all of you. I’m coming from out of state, so I had one trip (open house/reception) to sort this all out. Here goes…… 5375 Sugarloaf: The apartment complex is new and very nice. It is gated. It seemed a little expensive compared to others, but the fact that they will do your laundry and provide breakfast could be priceless....considering I’m not the laundry queen, this was quite appealing. If you like nice things, this is the place to live. The staff was really nice. Gables Sugarloaf: Again the complex was nice and gated, but the staff wasn’t as friendly. It seemed that large families lived there. The rooms were big with nice bathrooms. Master room had large closet space (girls, you know this is important). Sugarhill- This was nice. Most bang for the buck. Close to school. 100% occupancy, so get your application in early. Madison- Across the street from Sugarhill, Seemed nice too. Basically the apartments seemed to be around $900+ for 1100 sq feet (2 bedrooms) plus utilities. I was really impressed with the quality of apartments in Lawrenceville. I was afraid of ghetto student housing, but that wasn’t the case at all. They all had amazing pools. I don’t know if it’s a Georgia thing or not, but many of the apartment complexes hold “specials”. These last anywhere from a week to several weeks. Basically, if you sign a year long lease, they will knock off $100+ a month, or get one or two months free of rent. At least for 5375 sugarloaf if you get on the wait list now, they will give you the best special that is offered from now until move in date. After endless hours of apartment shopping, my family decided that buying a house would be the best thing. So, I got to spend the following day house hunting. We made an offer and now I need roommates to fill the house. Basically, it’s a fairly new house, 2400+ sq feet, 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, etc. The house is located about 1 mile from school so we can use our gas allowance for important things like expanding the never adequate wardrobe!!! About me: I'm single, female, social- although that might have to be tamed for a while. I've lived with roommates before so I'm pretty considerate. I do expect common areas to be clean. I like to barbeque and wouldn’t be surprised if I hosted some fun on an occasional Friday or Saturday night….I’m leaning towards all female roommates just so I can lay around in my underwear watching TiVo on hot days…just kidding. I prefer non smokers, not married, no kids. I try to eat healthy, but I’ve yet given up the daily Capt Crunch Berries intake. Currently I live with a vegetarian, so no prob there. The house is nice, so probably no dogs. I haven’t hashed out the price yet with my parents, but probably around $400-$450 plus utilities….split between 3 people should be under $100. We’re not trying to make money off students, just provide me with a safe and mellow living environment for these stressful years. If you are interested, send me a PM. pinkscrubs 05-10-2006, 08:54 PM Congrats DrGreenEyes on your house purchase! Sounds like fun! The rent is $400/mo, plus 1/3 of the utilities. The other roommate is also a 1st year. I do have a miniature poodle, and we may have another dog soon, so keep that in mind if you are allergic. We don't mind other pets though. The house is about 3.5 miles from the school. Anyhow, message me if you are interested! ~Dana bjsunny 05-15-2006, 09:15 PM Hi guys, My name is Dana, and I am currently a 1st year at GA-PCOM. Anyhow, message me if you are interested! ~Dana Hi, I'm Dana's "other roomate" (haha...howdy Dana!). In case you're wondering and couldn't tell by her name, we're both females. We're both 23. We both drive the same brand of car...wow. Anyway, to elaborate on Dana's message (since I know I had these same questions a year ago...), we are both pretty quiet and considerate of "study time." Her poodle is a great little dog who loves to be carried around like a baby. Dana's dad is our landlord so you can trust that any problems get taken care of ASAP. And (huge selling point!) it takes me approx. 6 minutes to get to school in the morning if not stopped by one of the local school buses :thumbdown . Hmmm...about me? I love music, traveling, indie films, and I own all 10 seasons of the Friends DVDs (not really important, but some people get a kick out of it). I'm really OCD about doors being locked, so you'll never have to worry about any doors being left unlocked in the house (just ask Dana!). And, though I don't see why it would be an issue, it's been brought up before that I am in fact a vegetarian, but I really don't care what other people eat, so don't worry about me throwing your steaks in the garbage or giving you the evil eye while moo-ing loudly if you eat a hamburger. :D That's all that comes to mind at the moment, but you can message me too if you want to know more. Oh yeah, a note to the upcoming 1st years: Dana and I take REALLY extensive notes in class. And I think we bought all the books that were required and probably many of the ones that weren't. Just so you know..... Alysa anxiousnadd 05-18-2006, 10:29 AM hey everyone, so i was wondering if any 1st years in the emergency med club could give me some info as to what they do, how it is for a D.O. to go into em, usmle vs. comlex, etc etc. i know i'm jumping the gun a bit, but i thought i'd ask anyway... thanks guys!! Now, there are a few things you and your room mate might want to know about me. First of all, I don't like daytime. In fact, I'm a night person. Actually, I hate the sun, I seem to be allergic to it. Also, I am definately not a vegetarian. I like meat...bloody, actually straight raw. And yall don't keep galic around by chance do you? I'm allergic to that too. Now, as far as animals, your pet and mine should get along fabulously. I have a pet bat and a python. They're really friendly and will help out with the mesquito problem. Hey, we don't want West Nile do we? I'm pretty easy to get along with. I'm sure we'll hit it off. Yall can come to my first chicken sacrifice of the year which I'll hold during the first full moon of school. The only other thing: I know you only need one other room mate, but my dominatrix hardly counts. She only comes to "spank me good" on the weekends. Let me know what you think! BMW19 05-18-2006, 01:58 PM So far we have had BLS training (although we won't be able to do it for you guys because it has now been integrated into the curriculum for course credit), had a guest speaker who is chief resident of Tampa General's emergency medicine residency and is one of the few DO's in the program. Had a pediatric emergency physcian speak. Our president was a flight paramedic for years so we plan on having some great lectures next year on airway mngmt., trauma and other great "blood and guts" lectures. Yesterday we practiced tracheotomies on each other (just kidding). Seriously we will fill you guys in at orientation about the great plans we have for next year fundraising, ride alongs etc. We are also the cheapest club on campus being $35 dues for all four years. I highly suggest joining the EM club next yr.if you are even considering EM or IM (both have cross over procedures and knowledge bases). The EM community is very welcoming to osteopathic physicians. We are usually very good with our hands when it comes to procedures and some EM program directors have even said that they love DO's in their program. As far as the comlex vs. USMLE that is a hot topic in any club/discussion group. My opinion is that it is a personal decision. If you want to do a residency at Emory you prob. want to take the USMLE, if you don't mind doing an AOA approved residency then you would be fine with just COMLEX. This is just one point of many that is brought up whenever we talk about this. You might need an hour to discuss this at length!! Hope that helped, PM me if you want more info. I have not said anything to Dana yet, but you are my kind of roomate! Here I am worrying that our new roomie will sleep in a bed rather than a coffin, and will have a pet goldfish instead of a bat. How conventional!! I love bats...I actually have a lot of experience with them as house pets. Do you like all black clothing, because I sure do. It's all I wear. People might think that's odd, but I think it is easy, affordable, and slimming! It'd be awesome fun if we could raid each other's closets and share clothes! Who is your favorite author? Mine is Anne Rice. Her book Interview with the Vampire is flippin sweet. I'm definitely voting you IN as our new housemate. hahaha...by the way this is all FAKE because I asked Dana if she knew the weirdo that replied to her message about a room for rent. Indeed, she did. It's a good thing too because I was about to call the police, and the local priest. But you had me going for a few minutes there...I can definitely appreciate twisted senses of humor! Oh yeah, the bat thing wasn't entirely a lie. I actually did live in an old, haunted (yes, haunted. no, I'm not crazy) house in Charleston, SC last year for school, and we had a little (okay, a BIG) bat problem. Bats came in our attic through a small hole and were sleeping there during the day. When my former roomate found the first one hanging upside down from his window, he pretty much flipped out. After that we saw them almost nightly, until we boarded up every inch of that house (it was ~100 years old). Problem solved. Except I'll probably suffer neurological defects or cancer in a few years due to the toxic bat guano...Oh well, this is common in old Charleston houses. Gotta study... Later GAdoc! BMW19 05-18-2006, 06:27 PM Anxious, It is not always about discrimination, (although i'm sure some programs will discrim. no matter what) sometimes they just don't know how to interpret the COMLEX and taking the USMLE just makes their life easier=makes your life easier by getting into the program. What would be an ideal MCAT score for a good chance at being accepted? Thanx in advance! :) In my opinion, a reasonable score is 27-30, and a good score is 31 or above. But you can surely get an interview with a lower score, assuming GPA and other stuff (essays, experience, letter of rec) are within "good" range. GA-PCOM doesn't just drop you if you have a lower MCAT, they really do look at other parts of the application; but still, its in your best interest to shoot for a 27 or higher. How much of a factor does experience play in regards to osteopathic schools, GA PCOM in particular? I haven't done any shadowing of any MD's or DO's but have shadowed DC's and DMD's. BMW19 05-27-2006, 01:42 PM Agreed Pdiddy. I think Sam was drinking too much "Allopathic Juice" when he posted. 30+ will land you in a decent allo school. I believe the majority of our class (and most DO schools) prob scored within the 25-27 range. By no means do you need a 31+ that is ridiculous. I mean we are good students and a good school but lets not go overboard. Mid twenties will get most people into DO school with decent GPA and EC's (and you are not discovered to be a mass murderer at your interview). By all means shoot for 30+ but not really necessary. You def. want to shadow some DO's b/f applying. Shadowing chiros and dentists is great if you want to go to chiro or dental school. Take it from a former DC, it is NOT nearly the same experience. Def. Shadow 1 or 2 DO's and get good letters of rec from them. BMW- A 30 with a 4.0 GPA would probably land me in Emory. :) However, I do not entirely believe in the allopathic philosophy. It looks like you will get off for summer June 1st and start back again on August 20th. Amy Just to give you my opinion: I am a Georgia resident. I went to Mercer University and got my undergrad. degree in Biomedical Engineering. I had 3.57 cumulative GPA and 27P on the MCAT. With those stats (which are far from stellar) I was interviewed and waitlisted at Mercer, MCG, Morehouse, and Uniformed Service University. I was interviwed and accepted at GA-PCOM. After visiting GA-PCOM and each of the allopathic schools to which I applied, I can honestly say (with no bias) that GA-PCOM has THE nicest, most state of the art, facilities of any school. They have the friendliest, most cohesive students. The administration seems to take a genuine interest in the success and well-being of every students. They have a strong name backing them up, and it speaks VERY highly of them that they gained accreditation so quickly. When preparing for the MCAT, never ask "what should I shoot for" hoping to hear something like 24, 27, 31+, etc. The first thing that they told us when I started my Kaplan prep course, was shoot for a 45T. That seems pretty rediculous, but the point is, you need to shoot for as high as you can get. Good luck! brian30bulldog 05-29-2006, 05:50 PM I was just accepted off the waitlist and am very excited. I guess that means Im on the housing market so if anyone needs an extra roommate or if 2-3 other people dont have roommates we can find a place together. BahaGirl 06-09-2006, 12:52 PM Hey let's get to know each other a little bit before we get to school. Who is coming with a family? Single? Coming straight from undergraduate? Took sometime off before going? etc, etc... :D I got on this forum much later than everyone else. My name is Melissa and I am 24 years old. I got accepted in March...Yai!!! I am coming to GA-PCOM with a boyfriend (Stephen) and a dog (my big loveable Rottie, Trill) in tow. I just got my MPH from the University of South Florida in Tampa. I did take a year off between undergraduate and public health to do a little self-guided pre-med post-bacc and take the MCAT. I graduated with my undergraduate at George Washington University in D.C in 2003. in emergency health services, so I am technically a licenced paramedic until the end of the year or so...not that it matters because I haven't used it. I got my apartment already. Summer Park off Buford Drive, and i'm very happy that is over with. samdwi 06-09-2006, 08:12 PM I got on this forum much later than everyone else. It looks like there are a good number of people from Tampa in your class. MKittyKat1983 06-10-2006, 06:50 AM pinkscrubs, I was reading that you stayed in the apartment complex last year. I am an incoming first year, and was interested in staying there or the Gables. Rent has dramatically increased since you had your lease. The two bedrooms are all over $1000. I was debating between this apartment complex and The Gables. On ApartmentRatings.com some of the previous residents at the Reserve stated that there were having problems, and the police were always there. They suspected drug traffic. Also, there were some complaints about bugs and the leasing agents, but nothing too bad. Now I know most people only post to these boards to report bad news, but I thought I would ask someone from PCOM what they thought of the complex and if you noticed any problems with it. Please let me know your thoughts and opinions on the complex. Any information I would be appreciate. Also I would like to know if anyone has rented from the Gables and what they thought about the complex. The only complaints I found here, were old postings about bugs, and problems with the leasing agents. Again I would appreciate any thoughts on these two properties so that I can make a decision. Thank you for your time! Erica :o Pdiddy310 06-10-2006, 10:53 AM if you all are looking for a newer, nicer apartment that is priced fairly, check out Wesley Herrington off of Herrington Rd. A two bed room water costed a little over $850 when my wife and I lived there a year ago. Also, its less trafficky and only a 10 min. drive to GaPCOM with traffic. Pdiddy310 06-10-2006, 10:55 AM Is GaPCOM on the quarter or semester system and how many hours of class are required per quarter/semester? Does anyone have a link to their curriculum of classes? thanx in advance. :) CircusofWillis 06-11-2006, 08:52 PM Is GaPCOM on the quarter or semester system and how many hours of class are required per quarter/semester? Does anyone have a link to their curriculum of classes? thanx in advance. :) we are actually on a trimester system. As far as hours go...creidt hours are usually around 18 total per trimester I think. The majority of the hours are allocated for the major basic science class ~14, OMM is 2 and PCS is 1. Actual hrs spent in class varies from week to week. samdwi 06-11-2006, 11:37 PM we are actually on a trimester system. Does anyone have any input on places that i can rent out and does anyone need a female roommate???? doctorjoy 06-14-2006, 09:06 AM Did any of you read the email from Angela, Suggesting that we might need laptops for the school year. If not here it is  Hello Future DOs!! To help improve our examination process, we may require that students have a laptop beginning in August. This is not mandatory as of yet, but, please keep this in mind as you prepare for August. We will keep you posted of our final decision. To help offset the costs you may incur, we are currently in negotiation with a major PC provider to offer laptop computers at a discounted rate for GA-PCOM students. If you currently have a laptop, please make sure that it has hardwire and wireless capabilities. Again, please note that this has not been mandated as of yet, however, we wanted to make sure you were aware of equipment you may need for the year. doctorjoy 06-14-2006, 09:07 AM I am going to be starting PCOM-ga campus in august. I am excited yet scared. Does anyone have any input on places that i can rent out and does anyone need a female roommate???? Hey there! Welcome to GA-PCOM. My roomate and I (we're both going to be 2nd years and we are both females) are looking for a roomate to fill the 3rd bedroom in our house. My roomate's dad owns the house, so he is our landlord and takes care of any problems quickly. The house is about a 7 minute drive from campus in normal traffic. We share all utilities equally, and we currently have high speed (wireless) internet, phone, cable, security system, garbage, water, electric/gas and pest control. My rent last year was $350/month plus 1/3 of utilities, which typically came to about $500 each month, give or take $30. You'd have to ask her what the rent will be for the coming year. We both posted earlier in this thread (her name is snicker-something haha), but feel free to PM me and I'll give you her email as well. Oh yeah, we have a dog in the house! He's a miniature poodle and he's very loveable. Good luck! -Alysa HooahDOc 06-16-2006, 12:29 PM Did any of you read the email from Angela, Suggesting that we might need laptops for the school year.
