Thanks cosmo!

I was waiting for some one to start this. I am still deciding, but strongly leaning towards Bradenton.

Hey I am hoping to find a place soon. Where are you guys thinking of staying? I hear the colonial grand and some other place is where most med students live. I would prefer to live close to other kids since I figure the rest of the population will be over 65..hehe.

I live just north of Bradenton and am interested in a roommate. I'm about a 35 min drive from school, interstate all the way. I live in a three bedroom house, have two dogs and two cats and am a non smoker. If you're interested or want more info, just pm me.

Oh yeah, I'm female. Females only :) !

Just out of curiosity, what kind of dogs do you have?

I have 2 more weeks to send in my deposit. I reallly LOVED the school/ppl/everything but I'm for some reason still waiting for other interviews. I'm pretty sure I'll end up at Bradenton though. I've started looking for a place too live and am trying to spend as little money as possible. Everything is so expensive. Bla

I have a chihuahua and a boxer. The chihuahua's name is Cosmo, which is where my screen name comes from. :-)

The cats are Siamese.

Since 2009 doesn't have a thread, I figure I'll jump in here. The earlier post was right, the majority of students live at colonial grande lakewood ranch, I myself don't live there now, but I will probably end up there at the end of the semester because of apartment problems where I'm at now. If I can be any help to any future PBLers, I'd be glad to help.

What do you know about the springs at braden river? That is what some current students at my interview suggested? Did you happen to use the roommate list the school provided or did you live by yourself?

I don't know anyone personally that lives there, but I do drive by it all the time on the way home from school. It seems like a nice place, and seems to fit the mold as far as price and size go for the area. Most of the office people at the different apartment complexes seem nice, so I guess the only real difference between apartments around here is amenities.
I personally live off 71st st. and Cortez, if anyones curious. There's two problems with this area though, compared to the Lakewood Ranch area. First off is the drive, even though I'm not far, traffic and stop lights leave me with a 45 minute drive in the morning. Second, a lot of complexes in my area are going to condos, mine just officially got bought, so I have to leave in the summmer, probably to Colonial Grande Lakewood, where most people are. It'll be more expensive, but I woulnd't mind getting that 45 minutes back for sleep.
As far ass the roommate list goes, I just got married over the summer, so I'm with my wife. I haven't heard any complaints about the list, and I think almost everyone here gets along, it's too small of a student base for there to be people that hate eachother. I've never met anyone that I didn't like(though a few that probably shouldn't be here)
Hope this helps.

So my bf and I will be moving down to FL together next year, but he doesn't graduate untill December. So I'm not really sure how to deal with him not being there for the first semester. Should I get a place by myself and hope that I will meet people anyways and not become incredibly lonely? or do you think I would have any luck finding a roomie for just the first semester, which would probably just be a hassle for them unless they were in the same situation as me. Please give advice, i'm a little stuck right now.

Thanks!

I'd recommend getting a place on your own, and don't worry about being lonely. You'll make friends real quick here, everybody's real close and real friendly. If it was for more than a semester, I'd recommend a roomie, but no one wants to deal with moving or anything like that on christmas break, you'll need the rest. Just my opinion though, hope it helps.

That's exactly what I am planning on doing. I like living alone and when I want to see people, I just step out of my apartment. Where do you recommend getting something for a decent price for one person? What is a decent price?

Rent.com is a beautiful thing. Just browse the area, there's more than enough apartments with quite a few differences and distances from school to choose from. If you dont mind a lil drive in the morning, you can get a cheaper apartment, I'm assuming one bedroom if you're by yourself, somewhere in the 700 range. If you want to be closer to school and can pay a lil more, it would be somewhere in the 800 range. But check rent.com, they list everything, and if you find an apartment you like on there and tell them, they give you a 100 dollar gift card!

docKinga
01-22-2006, 11:55 AM
Wow, 700 a month is REALLLLY expensive!!!! I've looked at rent.com and found some stuff for 500-600. Does anyone who's living in that area know of any place thats not on rent.com that rents for cheaper and is a decent place to live? At the interview, they told us that some places gave a LECOM discount. Is that a significant chunk of money or is it just gonna be like 50 off the application fee?

Thanks!

I was wondering if anyone from out of state was gonna go apartment hunting down there. I'm thinking about going down on my spring break, which is March 10. Maybe we could get a whole gang of out of staters together or something, and that way we could meet a few of our fellow classmates as well. Just a thought. Lemme know if anyone is interested. :D

This list was given to me on an excel file by the Bradenton Adcom. You can look them all up in that apartment guide you got at your interview. Also ForRent.com has them listed. The following stared apartments were higlighted in the excel file. I think those are more popular or get some sort of discount for being a LECOM student, but I am not sure.

***Carlton Arms, Fisherman's Landing, Springs at Braden River, Colonial Grand at Lakewood Ranch, Huntington Place, Town and Country, Tuscany, and Sawgrass Cove were highlighted.

Colonial Grand at Lakewood and Springs were also recommended by students as being popular apartments.

After doing your own investigation, tell me what you guys think. I want to live alone and I saw that The Springs have decently priced studios. I really want to live around a lot of classmates so I don't feel isolated.

Good luck:

I am planning to check out West Bradenton in hopes of adding some diversity to school-life, but living close to campus has its advantages.

Anyone else looking out West or even North?

I am hoping to live alone, but close to school and classmates. I figure most things like the beach are 10 minutes away, so I will be able to take study breaks whenever I want to with out sacrificing time.

Please if some one already goes to Bradenton, what do you think about the apartment listings?

Hi Everyone. I already checked out a bunch of apartments and the two nicest and closest ones to school are Colonial Grand and The Springs. Current students have told me these are the two most popular.
After looking around and touring myself, I have decided to move into Colonial Grand. I'm female...so to any other females that may be concerned about safety, I felt this apartment complex was the most secure. And it's in an awesome neighborhood including a movie theater across the street and tons of stores!!! :)

A couple of days ago I got a packet with stuff about computers, background checks, immunizations, policies and the like. A few weeks ago I got a financial aid packet. I live only a few miles from school, so I'm sure I get stuff quicker than most.

Hey guys/girls.....

I'm a 2nd year here at LECOM-FL and in a few months will be leaving the area to start rotations. Just wanted to advertise a place that will be up for rent starting June of '06 for those of you looking. Here are the stats.....

3 Bedrooms( 1 huge w/walkin closet and its own bathroom)
2 Bath
1 Car Garage
Separate Laundry room

Location: 1.5 miles from the school (no one lives closer)
Rent is $1295/month (which split between 3 people is extremely reasonable for this area)
Utilities (including Internet, Premium on demand cable, electric, etc): $200-$250 total
And just to be clear, we don't own the place, we are just renting it from a Realtor, so this isn't a shameless ploy to make money......at least not for us, just for the landlord.

If you have any questions or if you are interested either reply on here or PM me with an email/phone # and I'll give you the info.

I live about 40 minutes north and the subdivision across the highway from me has townhouses going for about 140 or so. I'm not sure how many bedrooms they are. And there are some about ten minutes north of me (still with good access to the interstate) going for about the same. PM me and I can send you more info.

I'm looking into buying too, and would also greatly appreciate any insights/suggestions as to the best areas to focus on. I'm hoping to find something a little closer than 40 min, and maybe around the Sarasota area (seemed like a little more to do...?), but I haven't really done any serious research yet. I'm planning a trip down in April to hunt. Can't wait to meet everybody ;) !

Sarasota is one of the most overpriced housing markets in the country. A bunch of rich retired folk live there. A lot of this area is becoming out of reach. I bought my house about two and a half years ago, and there is no way I could afford it if I were looking to buy now. You might have better luck in Ellenton or Ruskin, but if you're looking to buy you will have a commute on a student budget. One thing to consider, the money/time you spend commuting will be recouped when you go to sell, for sure. My house has doubled in value.

I guess it's all relative depending on how ridiculously overpriced you are used to ;). Moving from Seattle, where the median home price is ~$300,000, Sarasota prices actually don't seem too bad. Both areas have had crazy growth in home value over the last few years. If we decide to look further north or south, how bad is the commute on 75?

I live in about 60 miles north, a 45 min drive down i-75, and its not bad in the morning. It depends alot on how far you live from I-75, alot of the local roads around tampa, and just north of sarasota can get congested QUICK in the morning and double your drive. For example I work 30 miles from my house, and the drive takes 1-1.5hrs each way due to the long local road I have to take compared to the 60 mile drive taking only 45 mins... (also keep in mind that I have always diven a ways to work/school so this is nothing new to me, if your not good with time, it might not be a good idea for you!)
Let me know where your looking and I will see if I can find out more about that area.
Also from what I have been hearing I think several of the students drive from Tampa everyday, so it must not be that bad of an everyday drive.

Good point, one I hadn't considered. Guess that's why I'm a bad chess player. I live about two miles from I-75 in Riverview. From my on-ramp, it's about 25 miles to the exit for school. Traffic can get congested, but it moves pretty well. It's all three lane, too. And if there are accidents or other bottlenecks, Hwy 301 and Hwy 41 will both take you back to Riverview. I like it here in Riverview...area of huge growth potential. When we moved here, there were nothing but cow pastures. Now we have a Publix grocery store, Lowe's, Wal Mart is coming next month, etc. Property values are going up about 4000 bucks a week, so buy as soon as you can if that's what you want.

Forgot to mention that I live north of Bradenton. If you go any further south than Sarasota, you're talking two lane interstate. I don't know how the traffic moves, but I know someone who commutes 40 miles to Sarasota from North Port everyday. Her house has tripled in the last three years, so the growth there is huge, and there's a ton of construction.

I don't blame you for wanting to fly. I drove down to Miami in October and it nearly killed me. When I went to LECOM-B, I flew Airtran from Charlotte. Really simple and easy for the most part. There's a $1 toll for this really intimidatingly tall bridge you have to drive over, but it's pretty much six lanes or more all the way there.

You only need to drive over the Sunshine Skyway if you're coming from St. Pete. Otherwise, just take 275 to I-4 to I-75 from the airport. Much easier.

Usually about once a year, the bridge gets shut down for a few hours because someone decides that the best way to end his (usually) life is by jumping. It really bottlenecks traffic. But agreed, the view is spectacular if you are driving during the day. A few years ago, some car company (Mercedes, perhaps?) had a commercial filmed on it with no other traffic. It is a gorgeous view.

I am a first year student here in Bradenton. I am already so frustrated with the administration here that I am pretty sure that I'm going to cut my losses and leave. If you have any other option, take it. This place is totally disorganized and PBL here is a mess. Out of the three facilitators I've had, only one was qualified for the job. One was a secretary (she is gone now) and one a psychologist, who knows nothing about the basic sciences.

Many other students here hate it, but just keep quiet and try to get through. This of course is just my opinion, and others are probably happy here. To me, it is the worst institution of higher learning I've ever attended.

And before people step in with responses guessing that I am an unhappy bad student, or a troll, I am one of the better students here, and have the one of the highest entering MCATs at 29. But as I say, this is just my experience. I hope anyone coming next year will have a better time.

After posts like the one above, I find myself asking the same question, Hedgehog. During my interview at the school, I talked to a number of students (not just the sga reps from admissions) and they all had very positive things to say about the school. In fact, one of the things that sold me on LECOM-FL was how happy the students seemed relative to the other DO schools I've interviewed at. (Maybe they have to keep smiling while big brother is watching, eh? :D ) I'm not exactly sure how to resolve the disconnect between my interview experience and the negative posts here on SDN, but I'll share some of my over-intellectualized rationalizations for the fact that I am still turning down acceptances to attend LECOM-FL.

LECOM-FL is a new school. The first class is setting up rotations as we speak. It seems like this process can be frustrating even at well established large allopathic schools with dedicated teaching hospitals. There are bound to be some bumps due to the newness of the school. I think there is good reason to hope things will be running a bit smoother by the time we're ready for third year.

In regards to PBL, while the final product of PBL seems quite good, I'm sure the process can be exquisitely frustrating at times. Although I have never done PBL at LECOM, my undergrad curriculum was structured much like PBL - lots of small group learning with facilitators. I can say from that experience that some people become very frustrated and uncomfortable in this learning environment. You sort of have to let go and "go with the flow", trusting that it will take you where you need to go. It is a very different, "non-linear" form of learning and as such can seem disorganized and rambling when you are in the midst of it. In particular, it is hard to see your progress without the traditional linear progression from the front of the textbook to the back. However, at the end, everyone suddenly realizes how much they have learned and are usually very happy. As Dr. Kruger said, it is definitely not for eveyone.

With all due respect to the above poster and the validity of his/her negative experience, I do find myself questioning the idea that the school is creating such a bad PBL experience. The strength of PBL is that you have the freedom to facilitate your own experience. As Dr. Kruger said during the interview, if it's not going well, look in the mirror, not for someone to blame. I'm not going in to PBL looking for someone to teach me anything - I'm going there to teach myself, with the support of my gifted colleagues. Anything the school offers is bonus.

It would be nice to hear some positive stories from current students.

That's just, like, my opinion, man...

Yes, but this really isn't the place for it. There are plenty of other threads going on right now and you can start as many more as you want. The class threads, though, should at least be one place where the crap is off limits. People go here to escape all of the controversy and talk about other stuff. This is a place to feel comfortable with the people that you are going to go to school with next year. There's plenty of room on SDN for controversy. Why do you want to bring it here too?

Respectfully, I disagree that responding to a legitimate question about a school's curriculum and rotations qualifies as "crap". If you look through the other class threads, I think you will find similar questions.

In my humble opinion, these class threads are our chance to get to know one another, ask each other questions, get advice and air our concerns about the adventure to come. I don't think it serves future students or LECOM-Fl's interests to whitewash the class thread and paint a completely positive and unrealistic picture. I posted my response here specifcally because I wanted to get feedback from my future classmates and hopefully stimulate a discussion focusing on the good points of LECOM-Fl.

I apologize if I offended anyone who just came here to hang out.

I figure someone from the school has to jump in and cheer it up in here a little. A quick disclaimer, I'm a first year, so I can't speak personally, but I do talk to a number of second years about rotations and how things are going. I'm on Navy scholarship, and we're working as a group as HPSPers to share info on how the process is going since there's no base to fall back on. From what I've heard about rotations, things are going pretty smoothly. One guy has it all taken care of, and knowing him, he will have his residency taken care of by the beginning of the third year. But again I have to say that this is the military group, and as such represents a small group of the population and has to take a little different approach to rotation and residency. But, knowing that it is working for one person lets me know as long as you give it a lil effort and don't expect it to be handed to you it's not a problem.
As far as my experiences go, I love the school. PBL is amazing, I don't know how people can sit through 8-5 lectures every day. I love being able to study at my own pace, especially since it doesn't take me as long to pick up stuff as some of the other people. So I guess I'm one of the "smarter" people too, since I got a 29 also, Haven't had any problems with PBL. Yes, it takes time to adjust to, took me most of the first semester, but once you get the feel of it, I think most people will find that it's just as good as any lecture, if not better. You are right, it's a new program and has some kinks, I'm sorry the one girl ended up with the secretary, I heard the horror stories from that, someone in my group now had her, but she was only one of the many many facilitators, keyword was. Growing pains and such. PBL isn't something you can pass the blame off on to someone else though, since it's essentially individual study that's guided towards certain systems. And even then, with the way it's set up, you can study whatever area you want.
I think I'm done with my rant for now, Adult Swim is way too distracting... Time will tell on the match and rotations, but if it's anything like erie, we should be ok. Everything else is peachy, so long as you put some effort into it.

I am an OMS-II at LECOM-B - and taking Sunshine Skyway toll (basically 275-S) is MUCH MUCH easier than the I-275N/I-4/I-75 route - and will probably be about 30min of a shorter ride - or maybe even an hour shorter if you're driving during rush hour.

The drive over the Sunshine Skyway is BEAUTIFUL to add...I wouldn't go any other way if you're flying into Tampa.

Yeah, I was thinking somewhere around 3000 square feet right in the middle of Siesta Key would do it...

We'll definitely be at the "more reasonable" end of real estate in Bradenton - if there is such a thing. We're looking for a two+ bedroom maybe around 1000 square feet or so. It seems like there are homes from a few different areas that fit our criteria/price range, so we haven't zeroed in on a particular neighborhood yet. Partially it depends on where my wife finds work (she's an RN, so she'll probably be at Sarasota or Manatee Memorial). Some of the older homes in downtown Bradenton seem rather nice, although I don't know how the area is. The Real estate agent seemed to think that east of I-75 between 301 and 70 was a good area to look at. I would really appreciate any insights you might have from your hunt - I'll pm you my email. Let me know what you're looking for and I'll try to keep my eyes open, too.

To all 2010 class,

I am in the 2009 class, and I am going to be selling most of my books....I am not sure if they have sent you your book list yet....but if they have, email me at mgk76@aol.com, and I can give you some good deals...i have all of the first year books. Otherwise they are going to Ebay in a few weeks....

Also, I might be buying a house for investment soon...If any of you are looking for a place to live let me know a price range and I'll try see what I can do...

Thanks, and Congrats,
Matt

Michelle,

You need to start looking ASAP. I turned in my apartment application in February and was put on waiting list then. I can't imagine what it would be like with only one month before school starts.

Not only is the booklist here, but they want you to read from it too:

You definitely don't have to read before you get here...I, like the majority of my classmates, didn't and were all doing fine.... of course if you do, you will have a distinct advantage in your PBL groups... The first semester is a lot of physiology... A LOT OF PHYSIOLOGY. So if your going to read anything.... that is my recommendation.

On that note however, my true recommendation is to blow off the summer and have as much fun as you possibly can... because you won't be in Kansas anymore come August... Oh, and by the way, they gave us our first anatomy exam the second Monday of class... Just an FYI.

Congrats again on your acceptance and enjoy the summer.... see you in August.

Hey everyone -

Great thread. I am thinking about applying to LECOM-FL for the class of 2011. I wanted to know more about the area (Bradenton) since I may not be able to have a car if I go to med school. Is there public transportation and are you able to travel to places on foot? I've seen that a fellow poster claims that their apartment (1.5mi) away is the closest one. Could anyone comment on that? Thanks.

Here is the deal... There is no public transit system to get you to school... There is a public transit system, I however, don't have a clue where or when it runs. I live at one of the closer facilities (Colonial Grand at Lakewood Ranch) and it is about a 5-10 minute drive with no traffic. There are some places a little closer, but reality will set in and you will come to realize that you need a vehicle. I say this because you have clinical rotations that you just have to have a vehicle. My buddy, god love him, managed to go without a vehicle until Easter break...bumming, begging, borrowing, and biking his way around town. I guess the bottom line is if you don't have a car, buy one, if you have a car and it is questionable either fix it or trade it in on something better.

With that said, good luck on your decision to apply to 2011....

Okay thanks. I'll just have to ship my car down or drive it from MA (whichever is more cost effective).

I drove down from Michigan... It is a tedious drive, but it can be done... I did it alone, but definitely recommend getting a road trip buddy to go with you...

It looks like the bus will get you close to school, but probably not close enough to be practical. If you want to check it out, the bus service is called Manatee County Area Transit - "MCAT (http://www.co.manatee.fl.us/) ", how sick is that!

I'm going to opt for the car. Its a little too early to look for a driving buddy, but I'll definitely keep that in mind. Thanks again!

Hi everyone,

I've been planning to attend LECOM -FL since I was accepted in Feb. I figured I should make an appearance here before we all get to Bradenton and start class. Someone posted that we should read physio. I am reading anatomy to have a head start in August. Is this truly unnecessary?

See you in 2 months!

Yeah, reading anatomy is truly unnecessary... I tried to read up on it for a bit before going, it didn't help.... Either read physio or just chill....

Hey, Everyone! I'm Mariam and I'll be a first year student in the Fall. This all happened today (so I'm really excited!), but here I am looking for an apartment 2 weeks before school starts - any suggestions? I'm in NY and need to get down there ASAP to find an apt. I'm really not picky - I'll live with a M or F...as long as ur relatively neat.

Hey Mariam,

Congrats on your acceptance to the class of 2010... I wanted to let you know that your class has established a website that will probably make it easier for you to get a roommate... here is the link:
