I don't know if this topic has been discussed before or not. Anyways, I am in the second year of my PhD which is very focused on the eye, b/c I was originally planning on doing ophtho. But, during clinical rotations, I did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed orthopedics. Will I have a hard time selling myself as an ortho resident applicant? Have people been in a similar dillema?

I don't think it will hurt you at all if you do research outside of the field. However, if you applied to ophtho it would help. Maybe try to do a small project in ortho while in your clinical rotations to put the icing on the cake.

The PhD is more about teaching you the process of thinking than learning the material. People who do a PhD can change fields completely for postdoc as well.
