View Full Version : *** Official NYCOM Class of 2010 ***
shenningdo 01-01-2006, 06:41 PM Someone had to start it.... Congratulations to everyone.
I would love to meet some of my future classmates before school begins for drinks or dinner or house hunting! I am ready for the long nights of studying, the endless lack of sleep, and the enormous amount of material we will absorb in the next four years... I do think, however, it will be easier and more fun if we have some people with which we can share the pain!
I am Shannon... a 23 yr old female living in NJ, finishing my master's at UMDNJ in May, and originally from NY.
Sooner or later housing and roommate opportunities will pop up, so why not get to know each other now.
Happy New Year!
immunograd 01-01-2006, 09:50 PM Congratulations, just got NYCOM acceptance other day as well but already had to put down a deposit earlier in the month on LECOM-Erie. Any one know the procedure of how to withdraw once you put down a deposit (have to notify NYCOM for anything or just LECOM?).

Hi-
I put a deposit down at UNECOM in December. This morning I called and spoke to Lisa, the admissions coordinator up there. I simply told her I was withdrawing my application and forfeiting my seat for the entering class of 2006 due to receiving an acceptance to a school closer to home and a better fit for me. I did not say "NYCOM is my top choice, and UNECOM was only my second choice." I was polite, and she was thankful for the heads up so early. Most schools will require an e-mail or snail mail letter for proof of withdrawal, but I would suggest taking the personal step and calling as well.
Good luck!
-Shannon
immunograd 01-03-2006, 07:16 PM Thanks for the advice! I called up LECOM, and will follow up with a letter, although I don't think they will be refunding my $1500 anytime soon...
DiLLynqnt 01-03-2006, 09:59 PM congratulations!! yay NYCOM! :o

You are welcome. Look at the $1500 as a drop in the bucket to an amazing future. It is a lot of money, but it was well worth the peace of mind knowing you were going somewhere next year and would definitely become a doctor somewhere. Welcome to NYCOM, and congratulations!
euge998 01-06-2006, 06:47 PM Just sent in my deposit today , :D
By the way congrats to all , and look forward to meeting my future classmates
HunterGatherer 01-06-2006, 07:30 PM did you guys get anything from finacial aid with your acceptance materials? Thanks!
euge998 01-06-2006, 07:35 PM did you guys get anything from finacial aid with your acceptance materials? Thanks!
Nope, they did not send any financial aid info... just fill out your fafsa asap, and take care of the forms as soon as you get them ( thats the advice I got from people giving the tour when i had the interview)
Mike2010 01-11-2006, 11:33 AM Whats up, After everything has played out for me I have put my deposit down at NYCOM. Class of 2010 here I come! Im real excitied about the next four years and although i think I know how hard and fun it will be it is actually more likely that I have no idea. My name is Mike (obviously), I am 22 and from fishkill NY. I finished Undergrad (Biology) in May and am working and saving money until I go back in August. Hopefully I'll get to meet a few people before we start up. Congrats to everyone else here!
I havent recieved any financial aid stuff yet, my deposit was recieved certified two days ago though, so I assume they will be sending some more forms of various types shortly including aid packets, I cant fill out FAFSA anyway until all of my W2s come in i think (I have 1 out of 4).
I have a question for you guys though... What do you think about the PBL curriculum? I am going to apply for it b/c I think it is a better overall learning approach but I am kind of scared about how well it prepares you for the COMPLEX/USMLE. I dont know.

Congratulations on your acceptance and decision to join us at NYCOM next year. I am very excited for you.
Regarding your FAFSA, you can file it without your W2s. FAFSA will ask you if you "Have Filed", "Will File", or "Will Not File". You can choose "Will File", and it will ask you to estimate your gross and net incomes. Otherwise, you can fill in everything else since you know it, and they will complete the FAFSA form as is. Then, once you have filed, you can go into the FAFSA website and file a correction to update your income information. I would suggest filling out the FAFSA as soon as possible, so you have a better chance at receiving first come first serve loans, such as the Perkins Loan.
Otherwise, none of us have received any financial aid documents. As far as I know, all anyone has received is the information given to us during the interview, our acceptance letters, and the technical standards pamphlet that came with the letter.
Regarding the PBL program, I do think it is an amazing program. However, I am not applying for a position in it, purely out of fear. I only have one shot at getting my medical school education, and I am fearful of being a guinea pig to a new program. I am sure everyone at NYCOM gets an equally good education, but I am still fearful. Call me a traditionalist :). A medical school education is what you make of it, and I know I will make more of it with lectures, textbooks, exams, and a traditional systems-based lecture style. My learning style is one that can be adapted to either, but I know many people who have learning styles that lend them to one or the other. A person who cannot sit still or absorb enough information sitting in a lecture or a person who is self-driven enough to make good use of the time given to PBL students to do research is a good fit for the program. That is just my two cents.
By the way, I am Shannon, a 23 year old female currently finishing my Master's at UMDNJ in Newark, NJ. I went to college at Indiana University, and I have lived in NY, California, Indiana, and NJ. Now, I am definitely ready to go back home to NY :)!

Mike2010 01-16-2006, 11:25 AM For those who have sent in their deposits, did you hear anything back to the effect that they have recieved your deposit. I sent mine certified mail and someone picked it up b/c I got the card back showing someone signed for it. However I haven't heard anything from them or have not seen a $1500 decrease in my checking account. Do you think I should call them? Theyve had it for about a week now and the last day deposits are accepted (for my acceptance batch) is the 20th. Im just a little nervous about it.

I drove to school and hand delivered the deposit to them. Still gotta check if they took the money or not!

I called them up today, They said they have everything and should be cashing the check soon.
-What I want from them is a username and password for the website so I can look at the Apt. Rental board on the NYCOM website. **I may be in the Market for a roommate(s), if anyone is interested in finding out more about me let me know** In my undergraduate career I got along with every roomate I lived with (only 4 total, except for my semester in Australia where i lived in a flat with 5 foreigners, i got along with all them too.). I am a clean and real easy going 22yr old male.

I spoke to Joanne in admissions yesterday. Here is the deal... letters stating that they have received your deposit and confirmed your seat were mailed out yesterday. They cannot deposit the checks for a little while because they need an IT person to set up a few things in the computer that will allow the bursar to set up personal bursar accounts for the new class of students. Your bank account will not show a decrease for a while, but you should have a confirmation letter in hand within the next few days. NYCOM does not hold housing days for students to meet with any representatives of real estate offices or housing complexes (or each other for that matter). Joanne said your best bet is to find current students that are leaving their apartments via this website or coming to campus, talking to real estate broker, driving around the local areas and putting your name in at apartment complexes, and watching the local papers, like Newsday. We will not have access to the webboard where people post the need for a roommate or housing they are giving up until March or April, if the past predicts the future. Last year, it was not until late March. We should keep each other informed of roommates wanted and housing information we find here on this thread if we are going to get anywhere with the housing situation early on. However, late March is still not too late to find an apartment for July. Glen Cove is a large town with plenty of housing and is close to campus, as is Roslyn Heights, Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay, Hempstead, West Hempstead, etc. Good luck, and yes, I was accepted to NYCOM and am definitely attending, to answer HunterGatherer's question. I am a 23 yr old female in NJ finishing my Master's at UMDNJ.
immunograd 01-18-2006, 06:23 AM I noticed alot of housing questions on the thread. I'm working in the real estate industry now before orientation is August, so if anyone has any questions about the market, housing, or renting in Nassau County private message me and I'll get right back to you. Congratulations again!

yasha83 01-19-2006, 03:17 PM Hey guys my Name is Yakov and I'm a 22 yr. old College Senior @University of Rochester from Kingston, NY. I found out I was accepted 2 days ago to NYCOM!!!!!....This schol is at the top of my list, but there are still a few acceptances to mull over so I cannot ssay yet that I'm officially going, but it is sure looking that way. I'm filling out FAFSA right now, and had a question fore anyone willing to listen:
I have been a fulltime college student last year and during the summer and winter break I volunteered and interned. Sooo I have no income. Does that mean I will not file a W-2 and don't need to worry about that section of the FAFSA? Or are there other factors that will force me to file and make estimates on FAFSA about my W-2? Also I heard that since were being treated as independants, Parental info can be left blank. My parents have substantial income, but won't be involved at all in paying for medical school, so I prolly shouldnt fill that optional section out. This is what I have heard from others. Yet the FAFSA states that if you're in Health professions etc. it is in your best interest? which is correct any ideas?
HunterGatherer 01-19-2006, 03:30 PM Kak Dela?
Do you still have that Financial aid packet?
If you plan to pay for everything(housing, tuition, etc.) with just grants, stafford loans, perkins loans, and private loans then you do not need to enter parental info.
All title VII loans need parent info regardless of student age/marital status.
Scholarship for Disadvantage students
Loans for Disadvantaged students
Primary Care Loan
Maybe there are others but those were on the list.

yasha83 01-19-2006, 04:38 PM sposiba Hunter;
- I guess no titel VII loans for me, Title VI seems like the best way to go then, sans parent info. I still wonder tho if I need to file a W-2..seems like that would require a job in the first place...maybe?...
HunterGatherer 01-19-2006, 04:53 PM pahzhalusta.
A w-2 form is something you fill out when you start a job. Come tax time all the jobs you had for that tax year will send you a w-2 form to show the taxes you owe and tax withheld based on earnings and deductions claimed.
If you did not work at all in 2005 then you don't have w-2 forms.
Some situations you will not have w-2's when working such as the self-employed.
Call financial aid if you need further clarification.

HunterGatherer 01-21-2006, 03:58 PM What are the gyms that NYCOM students go to for workouts? Anything in the nearby neighborhoods with deals for NYCOM students? Any of them have personal trainers? Thanks!

Its been said that you have access to the General NYIT gym on campus which is bigger/better than the NYCOM one, not sure about the surrounding area though

Dahlia 01-24-2006, 02:13 PM Hey, I interviewed Dec. 15 and received acceptance letter in mail Dec. 29 (dated Dec. 23). (if i may, why do u ask? I thought you were in the class?)
Today I called admissions to confirm receipt of my deposit since I did not get the mailed confirmation yet. Still waiting to hear from 5 other schools for an interview or, 'decline', but at this point-- I'm a NYCOM'er !! It was always a top choice for me. Nothign left to do now but start applying for financial aid.
Congrats!
when was your interview and when did you get the letter?
HunterGatherer 01-24-2006, 02:26 PM I interviewed 1/4. I'm hoping to get an acceptance letter in the next couple of weeks and thought we may have interviewed around the same time. Thanks for getting back to me. I can go workout now. :D

Hey Dahlia, I also interviewed on the 15th, maybe we met, were you in the morning session by any chance? I'd like to think I remember a few people from that group
yasha83 01-24-2006, 09:35 PM Well, its official! I'M going to NYCOM! Class of 2010 rocks!
It took some serious deliberating, and NYCOM was my #1 school all along, yet the difference in cost made another school very appealing. Yet, when it all came down to it, I believe the quality of education, fantastic residency matching and amazing facilities really sold me and I believe will be worth more to me in the long run then the cost difference between my other options. Sooooooo jacked up to be attending my top choice!!!!!!!!!!!
Now that I have decided I would like to get in touch with all/any of you who would care to meet your future classmates to discuss housing, life on LI, and the upcoming process of acclimating ourselves to our school. Shenningdo, any chance I could get on that contact list of yours? PM me wiht any details.

I interviewed a week after you. I was told that the adcom had met and that the letters would be coming soon. How soon?....I have no idea. But I would assume it will be by the end of the week.
Good luck
shenningdo 01-25-2006, 05:04 AM Hi All Current and Future NCYOMers of 2010!
I just wanted to let you all know that I am compiling a list of names, email addresses and screennames of any Class of 2010 students who have committed to going. It started with a few people that personally got in contact with me, and now it is growing. If you want to be included (AND you do not mind your information being given to your future classmates), pm me your information, I will add you to the list, and then I will send you the updated list. This is in an attempt for some of us to get to know each other before school starts, share housing information as soon as it comes in, share any information we can about financial aid, health insurance, etc., and to maybe meet before classes start.
I hope this finds you all well and excited!
vrubin 01-25-2006, 01:08 PM Hey, congrads on your acceptances. I have a question I am hoping someone can answer.I had my interview with NYCOM on the 15th of Dec and at that time they told me that I could expect an answer by 2-3rd week of Jan. I spoke to the admission department today and they told me that their committe will meet next week and I can hope to hear by two weeks from now. I realize that some people with the same interview date as mine have already recieved acceptances. Does anyone know if this is a bad harbinger or they are just backed up with the interviews? Has anyone recieved an invitation that has interivewd after me?
KateGia 01-25-2006, 01:12 PM Hi All!! I'm definitely going to NYCOM!! I'm looking forward to talking to people, and I'm on shenningdo's list, so feel free to im me when she sends it out. I will be looking for a roommate, and housing as well! My name is Kate and I'm 22, and from upstate NY (Albany areay).
vrubin 01-25-2006, 01:23 PM Hey, congrads on your acceptance. I interviewd on the same day as you did, Dec 15th of last year and have not yet recieved a response from the school. I spoke to the admissions people today and they said The admissions comitee is meeting next week and I can hope to hear from them in two weeks. Do you know if anyone else that interviewd the same day as us recieved a response? Do you know if them not having responded to me yet indicates that they simply didnt get to me yet?
KateGia 01-25-2006, 01:39 PM Just wondering if anyone else who has confirmed intereviewed w/ me. Nov 30, afternoon.
buffalomoose 01-25-2006, 06:07 PM Hey all-

Just wondering if anyone else who has confirmed intereviewed w/ me. Nov 30, afternoon.
Hey KateGia
I interviewed the same time as you. I was the second to last person to go in for an interview (I had the man not the woman). I was the one from Brooklyn.
nvshelat 01-27-2006, 11:37 AM I KNOW i've seen a match list for NYCOM here before... but I can't find the thread and the search doesn't work too great - any help?
jellibelli 01-27-2006, 07:51 PM Hi everyone! My name is Julie and I'll be attending NYCOM this fall. Anyone planning on living in an apartment near school?
Hope to talk to you guys/see you guys!! :p

See everyone in August!!!
Jack-sprat 01-28-2006, 08:22 AM Hi everyone, Congrads!!!
I have an interview at NYCOM on 2/2/06. I have been playing phone tag with a D.O. for a chance to shadow him and for a LOR. I am not sure I will be able to see him before my interview, so here's my question; was anyone accepted with out a letter from a D.O.?
HunterGatherer 01-28-2006, 09:15 AM If you are free Jan 30th/31st you may be able to get it from somewhere else. PM me if you feel your source is unreliable. Hopefully someone responds to reassure you that a DO letter is uneeded.

Got a somewhat thick letter in the mail today. I'm accepted.
Don't worry if you call and they don't want to tell you anything. I called 1/27 and was told "we can't say anything over the phone but something was mailed out around 1/23". I think this SOP.
By Monday I will decide on NYCOM vs UMDNJSOM. I will add my name to the AOL chat list if I decide to matriculate to NYCOM. My interview process is over!

I didn't have a letter from a D.O. I had two LORs from MDs who practice and teach at universities. It's possible to get in without a DO LOR.
Good luck!
:p <- I love that face!
yasha83 01-28-2006, 02:29 PM Its about time you all heard some good news!
btw, Hunter, you forgot to add to your mini-biography that you know/speak Russian......good luck on your decision, they're both fantastic schools, you can;t lose!
HunterGatherer 01-29-2006, 01:39 AM I've decided on NYCOM. :D
A lady who only spoke russian came up to me complaining she could not find a drug store and I gave her directions in russian. Either my pronounciation is really bad or she had mental problems because she just kept repeating "Gde apteka?" So I'll leave that out of the mini profile for now. :meanie:

Jack-sprat 01-29-2006, 04:19 AM Thanks Jellibelli and HunterGatherer,
I just finished (last semester) my undergraduate and will be getting a LOR from the pre-med committee of that school. In addition I participated in a summer medical education program (SMEP) in 2004 and have the certificate to show. Do you think this will suffice or should I try to get an LOR from an MD also?
HunterGatherer 01-29-2006, 08:19 AM i had problems validating the new bloatware "AIM Triton". Supposedly there are conflicts if you have an old version of NERO BURNING ROM or language support for windows in another language besides english. I have both.
You can download and use Trillian for free, no adds or spyware. You can use the interface to hook up to AIM,ICQ,IRC,Yahoo, and MSN messenger from this one application. This is how I resolved my problem.

did the pre-med committee letter get sent to and received by NYCOM yet? If the committee letter was not sent yet then you should definitely shoot for that DO letter. My PM hopefully helps.

I asked the head of the committee since 1/17/06 to send the letter. He is usually good with sending them out but I will comfirm with him and NYCOM tomorrow if it was sent and received respectively.
HunterGatherer,
Thanks for the advise via PM. I will try your recommendation(s) and let you know the out come.

THe LOR from the pre-med committee is important. It tells them how the profs think of you and how the head of the committee thinks of you. You may want to have the guy fax the letter over. Say something to the effect of "Hi. I'm so sorry to bother you but I have an interview soon with X school and they just notified me that I don't have any LORs!" I did that AFTER I had an interview and the administrator was such a sweetheart - he did it immediately.
As for a LOR from a MD/DO... that's pretty important, too. Under their requirements they state that they want a LOR from a DO "but it's not required." I assumed that they want a LOR from ANY physician you have worked with... but it does not have to be from a DO.
Can you get a letter from the SMEP coordinator saying something to the effect that you're awesome and responsible.. aka not a looney? That would be like the cherry on top of an icecream sundae.
Good luck! Get the premed LOR and definitely get a physician LOR!
:p
HunterGatherer 01-29-2006, 03:49 PM Does anyone know if we have a white coat ceremony during 1st year orientation? I saw some threads where NYCOM had the ceremony after 2nd year and one post mentioning they had the ceremony before first year.

one of my tours, an MS-I had one on, so by that I assume first year we get it, but not too sure
From what I was told the white coat ceremony is after year II (we also get our PDAs then). The tour guides had the white coats but it wasnt theirs to keep- I saw them returning it to the admissions office after the tours.
Just a side note: I just wanted to introduce myself: I am a 22 year old female Brooklynite who graduated from college last spring with a major in English. Looking forward to meeting you all!
Marimba82 01-30-2006, 07:46 PM Hello all! I was accepted to NYCOM back in early January, and I've finally made my way onto this forum  Congrats to everyone who's made it so far!! I look forward to meeting you all in person.
My deposit's in, and though I'm still waiting to hear back from quite a few schools, as of now, I'm a NYCOM-bound also! Woohoo 2010!
Shenningdo and Mike2010 -- when did you both interview? I interviewed on 12/13 and I have a feeling at least one of you were amongst the 7 of us there that day :)
FYI, I'm a 24 year old Univ of Pennsylvania graduate living in Philadelphia currently, working in clinical research, looking forward to being back in my hometown!! I grew up in Little Neck, Queens

I interviewed on 12/13 as well! I was the first to be interviewed that day, and I was interviewed by a man who reminded me of Meatloaf, the singer :). I remember you! Congratulations on your acceptance! When you decide 100% that you will be a future classmate of ours, shoot me a pm with your name, email address, and AIM name, so we can get you on the ever-growing contact list. Congratulations again! It is so great to hear that day was successful for someone else, too!
Timbo0984 01-31-2006, 04:03 PM I live in Little Neck, where did you grow up? This would've prob made a good PM, oh well, next time.

JBear1327 01-31-2006, 07:37 PM Hello Fellow Classmates and Colleagues,
My name is Jessica and I am so excited! I interviewed at NYCOM Dec. 7th, thought I had a terrible interview with an ALLOPATHIC DOCTOR who didn't speak much English.... acceptance letter a couple weeks later.
NYCOM was my first choice, so I withdrew all other applications and sent in the deposit. I am 21, graduating from SUNY Geneseo this May with a BA in Political Science  . I'm from central NY (near Utica). I've known I was going to be a doctor since I was 15. I love the art of medicine and the challenge of it.
I only applied to Osteopathic schools (it's the wave of the future, and it is going to be HUGE, it is such a better approach). I have a best friend who just got accepted at Drexel in Philadelphia, and we have indepth discussions about which is better.
I am excited to get to know some of you before classes begin....
So, is there a final list for those of you on here who got in? Or an AIM list or something. My AIM name is JEdoublSizzle.
I'm babbling. CONGRATS EVERYONE!!!!!

endAIDScom 02-01-2006, 07:12 AM Apply for the PBL - We'll do better on the boards, we start rotations second semester, we get TONS of one on one attention from the best and newest proffessors at the school and you get a cadre of the highest acheiving applicants at the school to study and drink with.
You want to talk about boring? Try being in a lecture hall 10 hours a day with 300 people hours a day watching Friedman lecture on another subject that's "really not my topic" with binoculars.
The only downside is you have to buy some books.
The school's gym actualy isn't that bad if you can make the hours work.

JO300 supposedly did. He's probably lurking but shoot him a PM. Hopefully you'll get more than just complaints about NYCOM. ;)
endAIDScom 02-01-2006, 10:45 PM You don't need any books for the lecture based curriculum. You can honor just using the notes.
We do one day a week in a GP practice starting in Feb and running until the end of second year.
Rotations starting early is a good thing, something the other students are jealous of us for. I spend more time studying with friends than most of my lecture based friends do, so no it's not lonley unless you prefer studying alone.
This is only an experiment for NYCOM. All the top allopathic schools are PBL now, and when OSU started their program (which was also administrated by our current vice dean Portanova) their board scores went up by 3 points vs the lecture based students.
You will study more (because you have to perform every day) than folks in lecture based who only have to cram for a couple weeks before tests. I probably spend 6 hours a day studying (non-class time) and have one day off on the weekends. If the idea of studying more turns you off, this is the wrong program for you. BUT we learn a lot more medicine than the lecture based students.
Most of the time, being in the PBL is like being in a totally different (and better) school.

nvshelat 02-02-2006, 07:18 AM 2 Questions:
(1) Is NYCOM a 'bottom ranked' ostepathic school?
(2) How difficult is it to get into the PBL program? Not that I should be asking bc I haven't even gotten in to NYCOM yet, but just curious. What do they look at? Your application again, but only selecting the "best"?
Thanks!

Yea, I got this as a PM and I was really put off of NYCOM. It was in response to questions I asked about their PBL curriculum. I thought that that comment about it being a bottom ranked osteopathic school was ridiculous, why would anyone knowingly go there if that was a fact? Didn't even make sense to me.... I didn't think it was a bottom ranked osteopathic school at all, I thought it was one of the best (obviously, that's why I chose to go there). Really great location for building connections with affiliated hospitals, streaming lectures, PBL, STAN, etc. And, in regards to your second question, I'm not sure exactly what they are looking for. I think they only take 40, but I could be wrong (??)
HunterGatherer 02-02-2006, 07:19 PM I heard they take 40 people. You need to write an essay. I dropped off my deposit today and was told that more info on the DPC is coming out to us in the comming months.

Bold statements. Better on boards? I bet you and your closest, sharpest study partner, dinner at Le Bernardin. Lowest step1 score picks up the tab. If you have confidence in your curriculum, your early clinical experience, and your comrades this should be a worthwhile offer.

Is that the restaurant on Glen cove road? Is the food pretty good? I was thinking that may be a celebration spot for me. Do they have Steak Tartare, Steak Frites, escargot bourgignon, Tuna Nicoise, and pate au poivre?
beastmaster 02-03-2006, 07:06 PM No, midtown. Most expensive place I could think off while writing the post. I'm unfamiliar with glen cove cuisine. For a celebration spot I say find some unconventional spot in the city. If the snails ain't upto par atleast the atmosphere will be celebrational.

HunterGatherer 02-03-2006, 07:40 PM From what he explained It was lecture based for one of the carribean schools and NYCOM students were able to attend for free. There was not a mention of books. Tried to get info on the NBOME. Did searches on google and on the site and PM'd some people. I have one more person to hit up though.

based on what was said in a recent dean's meeting with the 1st years, they will be continuing this program for us, so chances are you guys will get it also. and i think we are getting books, because i remember getting an e-mail stating that we shouldn't buy kaplan books from the previous years b/c we'll be getting them... or something like that - i apparently sent that e-mail to the trash a little too quickly. can any other e-mail pack-rat 1st years check and confirm that?
otherwise i'll ask around and i'll get back to you on that.

HunterGatherer 02-04-2006, 03:47 AM I think the first year program is systems based. Is biochem, pharm, immino, behavioral, and cell bio integrated into the system based lecture from the start of first year? Seems like it would be hard to do and easier to keep them seperate. Thanks.

I was told that within each system, all of those subjects will be covered, as they pertain to that given system.

histo, biochem, pharm, physio, anat, embryo, genetics and micro have been broken up and distributed among the different systems, and although most of the time they flow pretty well with the system at hand, some of the topics that come up seem a little out of place. but i'm sure it's not easy to find a home for every topic that needs to be covered, and all in all it doesn't happen that much and it's not a big issue. they'll probably fix it up a little better for you guys anyway.
immuno was pretty much taught all together in the hematology/immunology system. the immuno course really could hold up as it's own system though, and the prof that teaches it has been here forever and is very good. you might get more of one topic in a particular system than in the others according to relevance - e.g. in our heme/immuno system we got a ton of micro, etc. i think most of behavioral will be covered with our neuro system, which we're plowing through right now.
there are some mixed feelings about dividing up some courses, like anatomy, so it'll be interesting to see how they tweak it for you guys. but overall i think the systems based curriculum is really a positive change and it just makes more sense. just my $.02.
btw, congrats to all of u~!
HunterGatherer 02-04-2006, 03:05 PM I made a bad assumption that anatomy would be taught straight through! :scared:
What is the schedule for teaching gross anatomy to your class?
Previously the first year was basic sciences and the second was integrated systems. Is your class spreading all of the systems out over 2 years?

I haven't read the SDN thread about Body worlds yet, but FYI, actually the "real" Body Worlds exhibit is on display right now in PHILADELPHIA at the Franklin Institute Science Museum (on through April 2006). I went a few months ago and it is simply incredible, scientifically and artistically. This exhibit in Philadelphia is the actual exhibit of the specimen made by Gunther Von Hagens, the man who created the process of plastination. I believe the NYC /South Street Seaport exhibit is a little different b/c it is not Gunther von Hagens who made those bodies, it is another individual who used the same technique of plastination. I heard some controversy a while back that the bodies used in the NYC exhibit were un-consented, un-informed, un-willing former Chinese prisoners, but I am not sure of the facts surrounding that.
Anyway come to PHILLY! :))
Marimba82 02-04-2006, 10:20 PM You don't need any books for the lecture based curriculum. You can honor just using the notes.
Do PBL students have access to the same online notes as the lecture-only students?
We do one day a week in a GP practice starting in Feb and running until the end of second year.
If you are doing one day a week of clinical work more than the lecture-only students, that's great experience and early hands-on experience, but that is not *rotations* is it?
This is only an experiment for NYCOM. All the top allopathic schools are PBL now, and when OSU started their program (which was also administrated by our current vice dean Portanova) their board scores went up by 3 points vs the lecture based students.
Most (or "all the top") allopathic schools probably incorporate PBL in varying degrees to their curriculum, but that's not what NYCOM is trying. NYCOM's program involves PBL ONLY. That's a huge difference from having BOTH lecture and PBL on the side/interspersed. The "experiment" is in trying to have PBL only. I think many MD schools right now have both lecture and PBL but how many have tried a curriculum of PBL only? Does anyone know?
BUT we learn a lot more medicine than the lecture based students.
I can see why PBL teaches you more medicine. But from what I hear, the boards test mostly basic science , facts, and concepts. Is the breadth of material covered in PBL as good as the depth?
Any (real, non-sarcastic) insight would be very helpful :) Thanks!

yasha83 02-05-2006, 11:26 AM That was the most amazing scientific exhibit I have ever seen, I went with a friend of mine who is an MS-I when I was in Chicago, and she said what makes it all the more amazing is how phenominal the dissections are, it is an art in itself. Being a first year anatomy student butchering some cadavers makes you appreciate just how good these specimens really are.

we actually just started dissecting in jan (at the beginning of this system) and we had 2 labs (1x per week for 2 weeks) so far dissecting the back. prior to this, anatomy labs were osteology labs (looking at bones), and no dissection. i think that's how it's gonna be for us - a couple of anatomy dissection labs at the start of each system. it has it's +'s & -'s, and who knows, maybe they'll change it for you guys next year...
I made a bad assumption that anatomy would be taught straight through! :scared:
What is the schedule for teaching gross anatomy to your class?
Previously the first year was basic sciences and the second was integrated systems. Is your class spreading all of the systems out over 2 years?
lilzelda 02-05-2006, 07:01 PM Hey lilzelda! What day did you interview? I interviewed the second week of Jan, too. Maybe we met? :p
I interview on 1/10 at 11am :)
HunterGatherer 02-05-2006, 07:04 PM OK I think I have reached the end of the internet. Thanks for all of the info. We'll see how NYCOM tweaks things for us. I guess I can stop worrying about getting crushed in Gross Anatomy.
moonlightgraham 02-06-2006, 06:59 AM What's up everybody...I'm attending NYCOM in the fall as well, sent in my deposit almost a month ago. Just wanted to start getting to know some of my future classmates before we get to work in August so feel free to drop a line on AIM or whatever. Speaking of August, anybody want to predict the date orientation will start. Any inside info would be appreciated. It's probably too early though. I'm going to spend the summer on the beach and I'm trying to decide about when I should be prepared to be ready for school...
HunterGatherer 02-06-2006, 07:10 AM When dropping off my deposit I was told:
tenantive start of orientation Aug 21st
Tentative start of class Aug 28th

Marimba82 02-06-2006, 07:15 AM dr.aldehyde -- why do you think are the plusses and minuses of spreading out Gross Anatomy over two years and dividing it by system? I am looking forward to that type of a curriculum, but i am interested to hear what you and other current NYCOM students like and don't like about the new way of dividing up Anatomy.
moonlightgraham -- i LOVE your name :) Is that from Field of Dreams? That's one of my favorite movies  Btw, congrats and welcome!
Based on the old copy of the Student Handbook that's on the NYCOM website, i think last year they started around Aug 23rd. But it could be different this summer, who knows. Any current NYCOM student might know more about that....?
lilzelda -- it might be easier to live at home, depending on how far home is from Old Westbury. It could save you about $10K ! Where is home?
moonlightgraham 02-07-2006, 05:09 AM Yes, moonlightgraham is from Field of Dreams, very good! It is a great movie. I've been calling myself that name since undergrad when my baseball career ended and I began to focus on becoming a doctor. If you remember the character in the movie, he loved baseball and wished he could have played it for a living but ends up becoming a doctor. Amazing dialgoue relating to this throughout...go watch it if you have it, you'll appreciate what I'm talking about all the more!
shenningdo 02-07-2006, 05:48 AM Hi-
My name is Shannon, and I am also a committed NYCOM student for the fall. I have compiled a list of currently commited students for our class that includes our names, email addresses, and AIM names. If you would like access to the list and your information to be added to the list, shoot me a pm with the information and I will send it on over. I am also planning social get togethers all in NYC once a month until we start school, so we can get to know each other, find potential roommates, study groups, and friends, and just get excited about our future. You should also check out our MySpace group that another classmate, Jess, has put together for us! Congratulations on your acceptance! I really look forward to hearing from and meeting all of you!

ark1212 02-07-2006, 11:57 AM My name is Andrea and I too will be joining you next fall at NYCOM. I interviewed the first week of January and sent my deposit in this week. I currently live in Manhattan and have been out of school for 5 years doing clinical and lab research at a hospital in the city.
I'm looking forward to starting school again next year and meeting all of my fellow classmates.
Does anyone know if many NYCOM students commute from Manhattan?
HunterGatherer 02-07-2006, 01:55 PM Most people live around the school and a small amount live in Brooklyn and Queens. I have not heard of anyone commuting from the other 3 boroughs but i'm sure there are some. The LIE can be tough so comming from Manhattan might give you a 1+ hour trip one way if driving.
I'm sure it could be done short term but in the winter months it could suck if it is a snowy season.
congrats! See you soon.

dr.aldehyde 02-09-2006, 08:51 AM hey marimba - don't get me wrong, the curriculum overall is great now that it's systems based, and some of the good things about spreading out the anatomy is that 1. we don't get overwhelmed with too much anat at one time and 2. we'll be able to visualize and reorient ourselves with the cavaders with each system over the course of 2 years. however, there's a part of me that would have liked to explore the human body in it's entirety/get a sense of how things connect overall right off the bat... b/c it's like putting together a puzzle - it's a little easier when you have a good idea of what the puzzle is supposed to look like when you're trying to make the pieces fit, ya know? and the other thing is that when you're dissecting, the systems based approach doesn't exactly apply since you're running into other structures and you can't just disregard them just because they're not "part of the system." that's probably my top 2 pros and cons, hope that helps~

Ski2Doc 02-09-2006, 11:49 PM Just found this thread. Nice that ppl are so firiendly, we are new yorkers afterall.
Anyways, i interviewed there 12/1. Got in around xmas. Just plunked down the depo, and got that letter saying they got it. Why dont they deposit it already!
I am 23 (last week), male, married, and have a little me running around somewhere. live in brooklyn.
Dreading the commute next year. Anyone else commuting from brooklyn next year? I may lease a car and just realized that the mileage is going to be a problem. Good thing the lectures are streamed.
This is kind of exciting, we are going to be classmates and eventually doctors (well 90% of us at least).
Ski2Doc 02-09-2006, 11:50 PM BTW, i just posted this in the DO thread.
Does anyone know if there is a summer thing at nycom??? I think i heard something about it.
HunterGatherer 02-10-2006, 02:37 AM look at the name of the OP. What's up with you skiiers? I'm not sure if you are able to take it unless they offer it to you.

Ski2Doc 02-11-2006, 11:24 PM Thanks for the links.
However, it really doesnt make sense that they would offer it to weak students. Do they have problems getting NOT weak students? Why take ppl that they feel are weak.
Anyways, i guess it is pointless to take unless maybe you ve been out of school for a long time or something.
Anyways thanks for the reply.
BTW - Did an1 get any letters about finaid?

Financial aid packets will be going out in april.
endAIDScom 02-13-2006, 08:30 AM [QUOTE=Marimba82]Do PBL students have access to the same online notes as the lecture-only students?
We do, but they come out weekly based on what the lecture based folks are studying. Occasionally this happens to be what you are studying, but most of the time it's not. And I am more likely to watch a lecture on something (previous years lectures are available) than go find the notes, as Harrisons is more searchable and quoteable than the notes are.
It remains to be seen if we will get internal med credit for the clincal hours. The're going to let us know by the end of the school year.
It does depend on the school. We can, however attend lectures if we want, and our clinical course has a strong lecture component. Also, we can request lectures on topics we are having trouble with, and are given a few on topics they think are problematic (we got lectures in action potential propigation and pharmacological clearance, and requested a couple lectures on radiology)
It's true, you can prepare quite well for the boards using the lecture notes.
But the PBL is more fun, helps you make more contacts, and better prepares you for rotations.
Incidentaly, when I said we were second worst, it was from an unconfirmed rumor (still trying to track down the supposed literature source) that the class of 2006 was second worst only to UNCOM on the COMLEX I. That said, they had the benfit of the old lecture based curriculum, and Dean Ross-Lee has made a lot of changes (and brought in a lot of great new faculty) that will benefit the classes of 2009 and 2010.
Oh and don't let anyone talk you into wasting money on Netter's anatomy, The whole Theime atlas will be out by the time you gals start anatomy and it's FAR superior.
So we probably aren't anywhere near the second worst anymore.
endAIDScom 02-13-2006, 08:49 AM Bold statements. Better on boards? I bet you and your closest, sharpest study partner, dinner at Le Bernardin. Lowest step1 score picks up the tab. If you have confidence in your curriculum, your early clinical experience, and your comrades this should be a worthwhile offer.
Beastmaster, you wouldn't be offering that bet if you knew what my MCATs were like, but I'm finicky and happen not to like french food. And I can't afford dinner for 1 at le benardin, much less 2.
How about beer and a burger at the BP? Or the new edition of G&G?
Ski2Doc 02-13-2006, 11:54 AM Regarding PBL. Is it worth the risk? it IS afterall an experimental program, with no defintite results. I am really wary about being the first here (at least in the bgeinning stages of the program)
It is, by far, more interesting than LBL no doubt.
Regarding the better prep for clinicals. does it really matter? The goal of the first 2 years, mainly, is to do well on step1. PERIOD. That score hugely determines your residency placement. Ofcoarse being a d*ck during your rotations will hurt you, but the LBL gives you patient interaction prep. Given you will still be very green in your first few weeks of roations but i think its worth THAT to get a better score on step 1.
Anyone?
beastmaster 02-13-2006, 03:38 PM Beastmaster, you wouldn't be offering that bet if you knew what my MCATs were likeI put my MCAT scores up against anyone.

Congratulations! The first get together has already been scheduled, but I am more than happy to take suggestions for the remaining get togethers we will have once a month. A saki bombing and sushi in the city sounds fantastic! Send me some suggestions on places, and I will work out the details, no problem! Thanks for the suggestion! Congratulations again.
HunterGatherer 02-15-2006, 09:18 AM saki bombing? just drinking a lot of saki right?
shenningdo 02-15-2006, 11:36 AM saki bombing? just drinking a lot of saki right?
You are so asking the wrong person. I can't find a single alcoholic drink I can stand for more than a sip, so I have never been drinking to an excess :). Ask Timbo, it was his idea :)!
Mike2010 02-15-2006, 02:08 PM I've never had Saki before, which is suprising given the epic levels and partying and alcohol consumption that characterized my undergrad years. I really like sushi though and would def try Sake, so I would be down for doing anything when we all meet up. As for the 'bombing' ( I assume thats drinking alot), I still drink a little once in a while but I have retired from getting drunk (except for very special occasions). I'm looking forward to meeting everyone ill be spending he next 4 years with. A little fun before the intesity sets in.
On another note,, My deposit cleared the bank today. I wonder when theyll send us some more infomation.
lilzelda 02-15-2006, 02:25 PM Did anybody put their parents info on their fafsa?
Saki Bomb is that like a Jagerbomb but with Saki?
KateGia 02-15-2006, 02:42 PM Ditto on my check clearing! It's about time, because I've been really tempted to spend that money.
Sushi sounds good to me, however if saki bombing has anything to do with dropping a shot of liquor in saki and chugging, i think i'm gonna have to pass on that part! I'll just take the shot, and leave the saki for someone else. :)
I was also wondering about putting my parents on my fafsa. I currently live at home, but come august I will be completely independent of my parents. Any insight would be appreciated
HunterGatherer 02-15-2006, 04:29 PM During the financial aid presentation we were told NYCOM's students are indepedent for financial aid considerations regardless of age.
If you plan to pay for everything(housing, tuition, etc.) with just savings/work, grants, stafford loans, perkins loans, and private loans then you do not need to enter parental info.
All title VII loans need parent info regardless of student age/marital status.
Scholarship for Disadvantage students
Loans for Disadvantaged students
Primary Care Loan
Maybe there are others but those were on the list
I was also wondering about putting my parents on my fafsa. I currently live at home, but come august I will be completely independent of my parents. Any insight would be appreciated
yasha83 02-16-2006, 10:33 AM I wouldn't put the parent info on there if you don't have to, although with NYCOM i guess it doesnt matter. The new York state requirements for independance are more stringent than the federal ones. Your parents income will work against you for the TAP grant, even if you won't see any of it, or it won't be used for medical school in any way. Thank god FAFSA is more reasonable.
Dies Irae 02-16-2006, 08:48 PM I put my MCAT scores up against anyone.

Since we just had a lecture on personality disorders today, I figured that it would be appropriate:

Mike2010 02-17-2006, 12:41 PM Whats up guys, I got the DPC application packet today from NYCOM and after looking through it I have dont think i'll be doing it, even though i was initially very interested. I just feel like it is a huge risk. I know I can excel in the traditional lecture based style and it is a time tested method so i might as well just go with it. I guess I have two main problems with the DPC. First, no-one has seemed to come up with any concrete numbers on how DPC student fair against lecture based students on the COMPLEX (if there were hard facts suggesting the same outcomes i would be swayed towards DPC i think). Second and more important to me is the student-driven aspect. I feel like to be in comfortable in the program you have to be confident in the talent and abilities of your peers in the program. I dont think the packet explains the facilitator's role well enough for me...
What do you guys think about the program?, It seems like if you can excel in it you will be better set up for the clinical years. I dont know.
Timbo0984 02-17-2006, 01:49 PM I am glad you guys all like the sushi and saki bomb idea. Saki-bombing is taking a qaurter glass of sapporo japaense beer, and then dropping a saki cup filled with saki into. You then proceed to drink the whole thing. I know, it prob sounds awful, but it actually tastes preety good. If you have never done it before, it can't hurt to try one. Those of you who have had irish car bombs, saki bombs are nothing like that. Saki bombs a light. Car bombs make you vomit. See the difference. Regarding the NYCOM PBL program, I know for the first few weeks we will be together with the pbl kids so that should give us time to figure things out. I am confused myself but we shall see.
nvshelat 02-17-2006, 02:30 PM I'm in! NYCOM here I come! :D

Cthulu 02-18-2006, 04:54 PM Anyone have any clue what is done during the first full week of orientation and how much time we spend each day?
Orientation for us ran 9-3 with a break for lunch thrown in. Each day had tons of speakers plus information sessions. They really expound on the osteopathic philosophy and they also pair you with a second year who will be there to advise you. Anything else during my orientation was a blur to me, but hopefully you'll get the idea from this.
nvshelat 02-19-2006, 07:11 AM Hey Guys,
What do you think about living in Queens? My longterm gf and I were thinking about living together; she is a master's student at Columbia (washington heights campus) and we wanted to live together. we figured queens would be a less expensive place to live and for her its about 30-40 mins by mta, which she doesn't mind. How would I fare going the other way to Old Westbury?
Thanks for the help!
HunterGatherer 02-19-2006, 08:13 AM I live in Forest Hills and you can commute to the Jamaica station by the MTA or just take the LIRR(about $7) to Glenvale or Old Westbury. Once you get to your final destination you need to take a cab, have someone pick you up, or take the bus.
also nice areas in Queens close to the LIRR are probably not much cheaper than living near NYCOM especially if you include a commute of over $10 roundtrip.
I'll be doing the commute until I get a car which may not happen for some months into the school year.

I live in Queens (Glen Oaks) and plan to stay there. It's right near the LI border and takes me about 15-20 mins to get to NYCOM by car. I share a 2 BR with my roommate, and our rent is $1250/month. My friends in the area have no problem commuting to Manhattan for work or school each day by train. Hope this helps!

I think NYCOM only has an MS and an MBA combined degree program but as far as i can tell, no MPH.

This information about research fellowships that second years can apply to is actually interesting. Does any current NYCOM student know more about these fellowships?

Hope I dont get in trouble for saying this, but there is a DO/MPH in NYCOM's near future.
I think there are still a bunch of extra "NYCOM research opportunities" handouts in the basement of NYCOM III, so you curious bastards can just drag your asses over there and take a look for yourselves.
HunterGatherer 02-20-2006, 03:39 PM Timbo,

HunterGatherer 02-21-2006, 12:01 AM NYCOM has at least one clinical summer research program and you can do lab research as well. I know you want to learn about research opportunities set up by NYCOM but you can set up your own research if you start asking around early.

I might take you up on that offer - I'm heading over there this Friday just to check it out again, get a feel for the environment, talk to more students, and gawk at the homes in Old Westbury. =)
I was looking for something more in line with epidemiology/biostat that would help me with clinical research as opposed to lab research, so we'll see if anything is available.
Looking forward to March when I get to meet you guys
NUKid 02-22-2006, 12:57 PM I was so happy to get into NYCOM that I forgot to introduce myself to you all. My name is Kurt and I grew up in upstate NY (near Rochester), went to Northeastern University (Boston) for college (Toxicology major), and have been working in Boston for the past 1 1/2 years as a study coordinator in Ophthalmology. I am an avid tennis and racquetball player.
I am currently looking for roomate(s) near the school so if anyone has ideas as to where to find some (or other housing), post or PM me. I'm not sure if I will be making the March get together but I'm sure I will make one or two of them. Hopefully will be able to make some study partners too!

there really is no need to fill it out yet since NYCOM won't be ready to do anything with it for a few months. But if you want to do it, make sure your info has been entered into the system at NYCOM. If you finish it before they enter you in the system, your ap will be lost.
HunterGatherer 02-23-2006, 11:27 AM I interviewed Jan 4th and our interview gorup was told to fill it out now. FAFSA is electronic now so I'm unsure how they can "lose" your application.
I believe TAP and other grants are first come first serve so there is no advantage in waiting.

Hi. First of all, congratulations on your acceptance! Previously, there has been a posting about acceptable grades at NYCOM. I believe that NYCOM does not accept anything lower than a C in your premed reqs. However, you should just call and verify with administration yourself.
Good luck!! :p

I'm just repeating what was told to me in a conversation with the financial aid office. They said that if you fill it out before your info is entered into their system, there is nothing to direct the application to so it can get "lost." Thats why nobody has received any info from the fin aid office yet. It seemed a little odd to me too, but what what the hell do i know.
kero883 02-25-2006, 08:10 AM Hi. First of all, congratulations on your acceptance! Previously, there has been a posting about acceptable grades at NYCOM. I believe that NYCOM does not accept anything lower than a C in your premed reqs. However, you should just call and verify with administration yourself.
Good luck!! :p
thanks so much for your response...i cant get a hold of the office until monday unfortunately, do uthink its a good saign though that they accepted me already? i mean, wouldnt it be ridiculous for them to accept me without even looking at any of my grades??? that sounds crazy

I thought the transcript request was just for official purposes........previously they had looked at your transcript through the one you sent to AACOMAS no? So if they accepted you they are already aware of all your grades and this transcript is just another final formality? That's my guess - or am i wrong about that?
HunterGatherer 02-25-2006, 09:20 AM Someone is in the same situation as yourself. There is a thread about it. She was accepted and found she had a C- on her transcript. She spoke to someone about it and was told not to worry. She called again and spoke to Ms Zaika or Ms Croot and was told she had to retake it. I believe that is how it went.
1)So yes you may be accepted and have unfulfilled requirements such as retaking a C-
2) You are accepted but need to complete all requirements such as getting a degree, passing grades etc.

HunterGatherer 02-25-2006, 09:22 AM Some of us applied without completing all prereqs so I don't know if it can be called a formality. Whether they actually will go over all 250+ students from the incoming class with a fine tooth comb I don't know. Whethere they will be on your azz for getting in your transcripts before the start of school: I don't know.
Nothing to worry about if everything is legit in your transcripts.

HunterGatherer 02-25-2006, 09:25 AM Oh well. I filled out my FAFSA early January because of what I was told during the fin aid presentation on my interview. When people start talking about receiveing fin aid stuff from NYCOM I will look into it. Thanks for the heads up.

Jejunum 02-25-2006, 02:40 PM hi everyone!
i recently got my acceptance letter from nycom, and they want mycheck obviously and a copy of my transript...in general biology I i got a C- and im worried that this will affect my acceptance...does anyone know NYCOMs policy on grades below a C??? i greatly appreciate your responses
First, congrats on your acceptance. Second, I am in the same position you are regarding a C- on a pre-req course (chem I for me). There was no mention in my acceptance letter about the need to retake the course. Fortunately, after speaking with another accepted student I called the school and spoke with Taryn Croot. She told me that I would need to retake this class in order to matriculate  The form you send in with your deposit has a section for you to list the pre-req courses taken, the date of completion and institution where you took them...I assume this allows the admission staff to quickly go through your transcript and make sure all the pre-req grades are at least a C...Personally, I think the admission staff should review an individuals pre-req info BEFORE sending out an acceptance letter. In so doing, the letter of admission would note any deficiencies and, prevent the accepted student from sending in a deposit thinking that he/she was all set only to find out later that a course(s) needed to be retaken. That being said, gen. bio I is not the worst pre-req to have to retake...good luck!
yasha83 02-25-2006, 04:17 PM So, I've been hearing alot about online streamed (audio or video?) lectures. Is this the main or only method of note-taking at NYCOM? Various other schools provide you with powerpoint printouts/printed notes prior to lectures. Does this happen at all at NYCOM, or is there an alternative method besides the streamed lectures? This seems largely like a personal preference issue, but I (and others too, I think) prefer the printed note approach. Can any current NYCOMer explain what actually goes down at school in regards to this topic? Any clarification would be much appreciated.
...also, anybody know the typical going rate or range of prices for 1-BR and 2-BR housing around Old Westbruy? Thanks.

Wow ok, so if you know you have a blemish and you bring it to their attention after being accepted.......then you have to retake the course in order to matriculate. But if you don't bring it to their attention (or you don't realize that there is such a policy at NYCOM), then they may not realize your blemish either and you might just be able to matriculate without an issue or anything to retake? That's not a very nice situation! How true is this? Honestly, I am asking b/c this is the first I have heard of a below C- policy for NYCOM, but if one exists, shouldn't they make it more clear when they accept you, take your money and ask for your transcript without telling you why?
nvshelat 02-27-2006, 10:09 AM Anyone know a good bank while I'm a student @ NYCOM? Which ATMs are on campus?
bananafish27 02-27-2006, 12:17 PM Hey Guys,
I recently interviewed at NYCOM and it went quite swimmingly. It was laidback and it seemed a large portion of the discussion was the professor trying to convince me why I should attend this school. I had some reservations and wanted to inquire how you guys felt about them - and for those of you who are committed to going, how you resolved this issue for yourselves. Taking in such a large class, NYCOM has 6-8 individuals per cadaver. While the interviewer claimed this is not a prohibitory factor to learning, it bothers to me a bit. Further, they have a huge 10% attrition rate which is higher than I have ever heard of before. If it's such a great institution why are so many students being first screened, accepted, then failing out? Finally, the board scores are in the 70s%. I asked my interviewer about this as well and he acknowledged it was true and that they don't presently know the reason it is so low. Thanks for the replies/info.
HunterGatherer 02-27-2006, 12:59 PM Sorry if my previous post seemed like a suggestion to try to sweep this under the rug.
My only advice on this matter is to call NYCOM and discuss this with Taryn Croot or Rodika Zaika. They are not going to take away your acceptance. Claiming ignorance is probably not going to help you if this issue comes up later.

Is it really 70%, that seems too low. I think the islands have s/t like 95%. It doesnt make sense.
Anyone???
bananafish27 02-27-2006, 05:25 PM I, too was really surprised by the numbers. They were confirmed by students attending and by Dr. Sohouais (sp?), head of the anatomy department.
nvshelat 02-27-2006, 06:32 PM Finally, the board scores are in the 70s%. I asked my interviewer about this as well and he acknowledged it was true and that they don't presently know the reason it is so low. Thanks for the replies/info.
That doesn't seem to correlate with their matches, so that's pretty odd. It could be that with such a big class, they have some ppl who do great on boards and then a lot who do poorly?
nvshelat 02-27-2006, 06:44 PM I read somewhere that if you're accepted between some dates you can pay the deposit in 2 separate installments? 500 up front then 1000 later? Is this true?
yasha83 02-28-2006, 06:24 AM I have hear the same about their retake policy, it's definitely the this COMLEX thing that might be a bit more troubling.
HunterGatherer 02-28-2006, 06:38 AM The COMLEX national pass rate is 89%. I'm a little skeptical about 70% myself. The board pass rate was something brought up at the Open House and based on Dr. Ross' response I find it hard to believe. NYCOM students get at least 4 weeks off for boards. NYCOM had a free kaplan prepe for the boards last year and they plan to repeat that again this year. 10% of the class are from the Emigre program but I don't see how they could bring down COMLEX board pass rates to 70%.
10% attrition rate is a number I've heard. The way NYCOM is set up it seems somewhat difficult to fail. It is possible to fail but I think you have 2 chances to retake failed exams and then you have a chance to retake up to a certain number of credits during the summer if you fail the 2 retakes.
NUKid 02-28-2006, 08:33 AM How does the grading system work at NYCOM for the first two years? Is it just pass/fail or something else?
I am also curious to know if the profs go by powerpoint and print out the notes to give to students.

I think I read they have H/P/F where H=honors=top 10%.

I was told the above info as well. Honors for clinical grading is a little more tricky.
during interviews we went to the basement where the student mailboxes(Serota Center?) are located and there was a table full of notes preprinted for students. It seemed to cover at least 2 weeks. I'm not sure if powerpoints are printed out or just notes.
Most classes are streamed and you will have access to powerpoints, notes, and streamed videos online. So you can print powerpoints/notes on your own or save them on your PC laptop.
christinejane19 02-28-2006, 10:33 AM Someone had to start it....
Happy New Year!
so..a little off the current topics.. but does anyone know when we'll start receiving further information? I'd love to have access to the other parts of the NYCOM website, info on orientation, academic calendar, etc... Anyone else trying to plan their summer, etc and wondering about info?

I heard that it was true from a 4th year student. I was also told that the AOA was reviewing the curriculum because of these bad rates. It seems that all of the changes that were put in place messed things up. Hopefully they iron everything out.
Sweepea8137 02-28-2006, 11:06 AM Hi All....
I was just browsing and I am so surprised!! I am currently a first year at NYCOM and am so surprised to hear about some of things that you have all been hearing. As such, I thought I would take some time to quell some fears and address some rumors.
COMLEX/USMLE....with regard to pass rate, I have never once heard of the pass rate being as low as 70%. Was this for the COMLEX or the USMLE?? As far as I know, our students fair well on both the COMLEX and the USMLE. We need to pass the COMLEX in order to graduate and a number of students take the USMLE in addition to the COMLEX, especially if they are hoping to match into an allopathic residency. The tests are administered around the same time so most students have only a few weeks to prepare for one or the other. I find this somewhat interesting being that we have a relatively good match list, especially in allopathic anesthesiology training programs.
Streaming....yes, the lectures are all recorded and are posted on the academic web page before the end of the day. They can be accessed at your own convenience. Many students choose to stay home, study during the day, and stream their lectures in the evening. However, there are many students, such as myself that attend lecture, take notes during lecture, and re-stream the lecture if necessary - for instance....if the lecture covered a particularly challenging topic, I will got to class, take as many notes as I can, and re-stream the lecture that evening for the sake of completeness. This is what works for me. I have a number of friends that are streamers, never come to class, and honor exams. It's all a matter of personal preference. Do what works for you. The resource is there. There is no script service, so we are responsible for taking our own notes.
Powerpoints....at the beginning of each week, we are given a course packet that contains all of the powerpoint presentations that will be used by respective professors the following week. These are all you really need in order to do well on the exams. They are usually comprehensive (sometimes a little too comprehensive) and they are the primary source for exam questions. There is room for handwritten notes on each of the presentations. Additionally, the powerpoints are posted on the academic web page should you choose to print them out yourself. There are times when I print them out in a certain format (2 slides per page) to give myself a little more room for notes.
Just a word of advice....don't pay much mind to the things you hear regarding medical school in general. Keep an open mind and see for yourself. Don't make the mistake of starting medical school with pre-conceived notions. Start fresh. Your four years of medical school will prove to be the worst years of your life and the best years of your life. In the end, you will all be physicians and that's what make it all worth it....I'll get off my soapbox now. Congratulations to all who gained acceptance and good luck to all who are waiting and/or choose different routes!!

NYCOM offers interviews before LOR or a secondary is received. They send you the secondary along with the interview invite, and you bring it with you to your interview. I know a couple people who were interviewed with your MCAT score or lower and 1 person who was accepted with your MCAT score. Good luck. :luck:
tedd1212 03-02-2006, 08:03 PM Whats up guys, I got the DPC application packet today from NYCOM and after looking through it I have dont think i'll be doing it, even though i was initially very interested.
Couple of things while i procrastinate:
I'm a NYCOM DPC MS I.
someone asked about commuting from queens. i live just west of bayside on Northern BLVD. the commute is a very easy 30min and positions you nicely for getting into the city (25min on LIRR). can't beat it in my opinion.
next.
i've seen a couple posts with regard to the infantcy of the DPC. while it is a new program at NYCOM it is being run by people with more than 10 years of proven experience. Dr. Portanova (the head) was previously at Ohio or someplace like that and was hired by nycom for his ability to set up the program.
the benefits for taking the risk (truthfully i don't at all at risk) are:
you begin shadowing drs / working in a FP office the second half of your first year (this alone should be enough persuasion).
we have clinical training twice a week
you set your own study schedule and learning objs (the facilitators are there to insure that you cover everything important)
it is a much smaller group (40 students vs 300) providing much more visibility and networking options
after 1 semester we've already treated 12 cases and believe me when i tell you that once you learn something with respect to a patient and a case you will never forget it
did i mention that we are already out in the field at dr's offices interacting with patients, taking histories, doing physicals, and working with experienced individuals who are more than willing to point us in the write direction when it comes to the decisions that need to be made in the upcoming years.
is the program new to nycom, yes. are there still a few bugs in the system, yes. does the program prepare you to become a dr, YES. will it affect your ability to pass the boards, i don't believe so. Passing the boards ultimately comes down to the amount of time you put into your studies. the dpc program is driving info into my brain as fast as i can absorb it. there is no way that any other method of learning could be any more high yeild.
final words: send in your paperwork. i don't think we did fin aid till june or july so my advice is: GO PLAY WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY NOW!!!!!!!!! BECAUSE COME AUGUST YOU WILL HAVE ZERO TIME FOR ANYTHING BUT UNDERSTANDING THE HUMAN BODY!!!!!!!! this i can't emphasize enough

Can you give us an example of your weekly schedule as a DPC student? How much time you spend in clinical training/shadowing physicians as I wonder how that helps you prepare for step 1 when you could be spending the time studying sciences instead?
jellibelli 03-03-2006, 06:36 PM I'm sorry, but does anyone have a matchlist for NYCOM? Is there one floating around? PM me, please. I appreciate your help!
PlasticMan 03-03-2006, 11:02 PM I'm sorry, but does anyone have a matchlist for NYCOM? Is there one floating around? PM me, please. I appreciate your help!
You might be able to find an un-official one by searching SDN. At the interview, they passed them out for us to look at, but then collected them back. Had lots of matches into anesthesiology along with plenty of IM, FP, OB/GYN, along with a handful of general surgery. This is the extent of what I remember from glancing at it. Hope this helped somewhat.
nvshelat 03-04-2006, 08:07 AM attached. it's pretty sick, blows other schools match lists out of the water.

mon, wed, fri: group from 1-3
mon: OMM lab 8-12
tues: clinical w/ Dr from 2-5
tues: clinical w/ sim patient 9-11
thurs: DPC problem set 9-11
thurs: clinical lab 1-4
we spend more than enough time in the books. the clinical interactions reinforce what we read.

ps. note that this schedule is certainly subject to change and is modeled after my current schedule and does not reflect the schedule for the entire year

nvshelat 03-07-2006, 09:43 AM What are you guys doing for health insurance for the transition period (May - August)? I'm covered under my mom's health insr through work only as long as I have a letter stating that I'm a full-time student - but NYCOM said they won't give me that letter until the 1st day of orientation. Does anyone know if health insurance through NYCOM covers students from may onwards?

i mean, i figure it's prolly a student whos not doing so well and taking it out on the admin - but still, I'm left wondering, what exactly is our curriculum going to be like??
beastmaster 03-08-2006, 02:13 PM I'm left wondering, what exactly is our curriculum going to be like??
Your curriculum will be an improved version of the new curriculum put in place this year, provided your asking about the lecture based system. One major difference (I think!) is fewer exams. We have one every month; I believe previous classes were tested more frequently. For some, this provides a certain freedom and flexibility to incorporate board studying. For others, it breeds sloppiness. I personally don't need any hand holding, so I'm happy with the freedom I have.
The exam composition in a systems-based course is naturally a mix of topics. So if you get 20 pharm or stepp's phys questions, you can theoretically get all of them wrong and pass the exam. I'd be willing to bet that all the horror stories and nonsensical complaints come from people who failed pharm or phys. Since that can no longer happen, the horror stories are likely to stop. As far passing exams by "ignoring" or "failing" certain subject matter goes, well, there's ways to use that to your advantage. You can use it to pinpoint weakness, and apply your dedication to re-learn the material. Or you can be stupid, and trade short-term relief for long-term consequence. But as material builds, maybe next exam you won't be so lucky.
With the five months you have before school starts, I would suggest focusing less on the rumor mill and more on preparing (psychologically, physically) for succeeding as a medical student. Read SDN. Find the old classic threads on the mistakes you should avoid, how to do well on exams, boards, etc. And just be a little patient, you'll receive all the NYCOM-specific information you need and more on top of that.
nvshelat 03-08-2006, 04:43 PM Your curriculum will be an improved version of the new curriculum put in place this year, provided your asking about the lecture based system.
Sorry, just to clarify, the curriculum for the class above us (2009) is systems-based, and that is the major improvement over previous years' curriculae?
Thanks!

PlasticMan 03-09-2006, 12:39 PM I wouldn't worry too much, nvshelat. It looks like they've been trying to fix the problems they've had over the past couple years, so hopefully for the class of 2010, more of the problems will have been worked out :) .
At the financial aid meeting on interview day, the guy said something along the lines of, "If you come here, you will HAVE to obtain family support or private loans." So, since the federal limit is $189k and 4 years at NYCOM will cost in surplus of this, how is everyone planning on paying this? Should we just start school, and assume we will have no problem finding a lender during our 3-4 year? Does the school help with obtaining these loans? Another words, should we be looking into securing a loan for the future now ahead of time or is it definite that we will be able to find one and not have to drop out of school due to financial reasons?
HunterGatherer 03-09-2006, 01:41 PM During the financial aid presentation we were told that you should have good credit if you plan to attend NYCOM. "A credit score under 600 and this schools is not for you". I think she said you should have a score around 650-700 for decent interest rates. The reason for this is that you would be using private loans to cover anything over the $189K provided you don't have other resources.
At the Open House we were told that nobody had to leave NYCOM because of financial reasons. We were told the fin aid office would try to work (reason for having good credit) with you.
generally:
$189K is stafford
anything above that is private loans
We were encouraged to look into our credit situation ASAP and address any negatives we found as well.
FYI when getting your credit scores try to stick with myfico.com Any other service will give you a score based on their own formula which may be a bit inflated than what loan companies will receive. You may track your credit profile with other cheaper alternatives but myfico should be the score you look at if that interests you.
PlasticMan 03-09-2006, 01:52 PM Thanks for the info, Hunter. Myfico looks good, but does anyone know of any good free ones? I've heard that you're allowed one free credit report per year?
*edit* Nevermind. The free ones only supply your credit report, not your credit score; they charge a fee for that. So, looks like we gotta pay for myfico.

I wouldn't worry too much any school has kinks to work out, what matters is the attitude taken in trying to address them, and NYCOM doesn't seem to be lacking in that department. The OP of the thread you provided a link to has three different login names which he uses to routinely log on and complain about his status as a "lost, confused and disheartened" MS-I. It is obvious that he knows that an anonymous web-board cannot solve his problems, so I assume the only reason he continues to do so is that he wants some company in his misery. Truth is, I think people like this are to be found at any school, no matter the drop-out rate since unfortunately some people are always ill-equipped for the work load. He was apparently not aware of how hard he would need to work, it seems that we are. With that in mind, its best to come in with a positive attitude, a warranted one, since NYCOM is a great school. For every such naysayer there were Ten guys who responded to him saying that they had positive experiences. Insecurity is contagious, don;t expose yourself to it too much :)

HunterGatherer 03-11-2006, 06:18 PM if you have no plans to retake the MCAT then apply early. Can't say you're a lock for an interciew. In the meantime get a DO letter and attend the NYCOM Open house in October if you can. Be sure to get some face time with MS Zaika or Ms Croot.

Both your GPA and MCAT are below the average for NYCOM so there's no way that it would be a definite. NYCOM starts interviewing late (early december) so I'm not sure applying in june will give you that much of an advantage. I took the MCAT in August, submitted my primary ap in september, and was interviewed in early january. Try and beef up your application with shadowing, volunteering, and possibly retake the MCAT.
Mike2010 03-13-2006, 05:24 PM So listen to this guys, While I work in environmental consulting/engineering during the day, I wait tables at night for a little extra cash. I have alot of experience as a waiter so the resturant I work in now is a pretty snazzy affair (4 star, 5 course) about 1 hr north of NYC. So tonight, in walk these relatively affluent looking old people (2 men 1 woman) and they are seated in my section. In striking up some conversation with them I find out they are from out of town, here for a funeral, and looking for a good place to hang out on a monday night (which doesnt really exist up here where i live). So naturally I ask them where they are from. Old Westbury they say. So I tell them I am going to NYCOM to become a D.O. The guys look excited and offer congrats but the old lady struggles and lifts her hand with the 5 carat rock on it to her face in confusion and asks what a D.O. is. Luckily the guy that wasn't her husband was a pharmacist and articulated beautifully how D.O.s are like M.D.s but actually do more. After that they talked about living down there, how I should live in glen cove, and asked me more about my plans. Anyway, at the end the guy hands me back the check and says, "heres a little extra for school, good luck, we'll see You in LI"--- 40 tip on a 100 check. not bad.

Giddyup! However, I've heard Glen Cove is expensive :( Makes sense since they sounded wealthy. I was out at NYCOM this weekend and must say it seems like pretty afluent neighborhoods surrounding the school; I saw no less than 3 ferraris while there for only a couple hours!
nvshelat 03-15-2006, 05:46 AM Sorry guys, but I'll miss you at the get together this weekend - have fun though and hopefully I'll see you all in April at our next get-together!
nvshelat 03-15-2006, 06:04 AM I have a buddy at WashU who said they get a course in learning how to "read" journals - that is, how to critique studies, analyze the biostats, and get what you need to know from journal articles. Anyone know if NYCOM has a course like this?
I imagine that it would be tremendously helpful, esp when a patient comes to you and says, "Well, I heard in the news about this study..."
Mike2010 03-15-2006, 11:00 AM I had an undergrad class like that, im not sure about NYCOM though. If they have a journal club of any sort, active participation in such a group would accomplish the same goals as a class would. I think as long as you can figure out what the results of a research paper show the only other things that matter are who conducted the research and who funded it (as to asess the validity of the results). If red flags (i.e. funded by a drug company or researched by undergrads/phD candidates) come up in these areas then you may need to look at the procedural elements of the experiment. I dont know...
HunterGatherer 03-15-2006, 12:32 PM Biostats should be integrated into the Lecture curriculum. The math/stats involved in most research work is not very complicated. As long as you understand algebra you can teach yourself anything not covered at NYCOM. Also, the summer research programs would help you put that knowledge to use. You could learn the basics of reading research articles in just a couple of hours. Analyzing data would take more work depending on how much you want to rely on a computer.
Like Mike2010 says, journal clubs usually discuss research data and with enough exposure you will see the same methods of analysis used. I'm sure a number of the medical specialty clubs have some type of journal club session.

Also, is there a particular apartment complex where many students live? It would be nice to live around other students as opposed to being sprawled out all over the place.

Yes, the NYCOM webboard. However, you need to be officially registered in the school and register to use it since it requires a pw and username.
http://meet.nyit.edu/ They have a whole thread for housing with lots of posts. I can copy some of them for you.

Yes, but I have heard NYIT's gym is very tiny as well. I've been told the large, nice gym is only for sports teams' use?
HunterGatherer 03-31-2006, 08:12 AM PDAs are given out the end of 2nd year.
I head rumores of a tiny NYCOM gym and when I saw it on the interview tour I almost laughed. It looks like a 20' x 20' room with a seperate stretching area from what I remember. the bigger question is if it ever gets busy and when.
There is an outdoor basketball court next to the parking lot.
no idea on NYIT gym though.

HunterGatherer 04-03-2006, 04:26 PM I'm going to call them tomorrow. Seems that the class of 2009 starting getting financial aid info in March 2005.
anybody receive fin. aid info?
HunterGatherer 04-04-2006, 10:03 AM so I call NYCOM and I'm told that FA letters were not mailed out but will be soon. check the mail later on and find my FA packet from NYCOM. I'm wondering if I should always ask to talk to Student Affairs or Student Services when I call.
Anyway NYCOM is now a school as lender. You may use them instead of a bank. This was mentioned at the Open House in 2005 and it is up and running now. NYCOM did not list any banks in the packet so I did not compare anything yet. They state interest paid will be used to fund scholarships.
also included:
explanation of some loans (Title VII and Grad PLUS), exit interview and other stuff.
I imagine those accepted in January or earlier will get an FA letter soon.

Do they have any incentive to have lower interest rates than the private banks? If so, then correct me if I'm wrong, but the order would be Stafford first, then Grad plus loans, then nycom loans for cost of living?

She said the admissions office isn't in charge of these things, and they'll mail us more info at a later date...but so far, the 21st is the date.

College financial aid offices determine whether you qualify for federal Perkins loans and decide the amount of the loan. Colleges that participate in the Perkins loan program have a limited amount of money they can distribute, so they award these loans very selectively.
The primary features and conditions of the program are explained below. See your schools financial aid counselor for more information.
-Graduate: $6,000 to $40,000 maximum per year
-5% Interest rate (fixed for the life of the loan).

HunterGatherer 04-06-2006, 09:14 AM Do they have any incentive to have lower interest rates than the private banks? If so, then correct me if I'm wrong, but the order would be Stafford first, then Grad plus loans, then nycom loans for cost of living?
I was very confused on all of this until I sat down this morning to finally figure this all out. i can't offer advice but hopefully the post above makes things a bit more clear. Posting it sure helped me.
the first loan would be Stafford Loan which is offered by NYCOM in partnership with Sallie Mae. A loan that you don't get the 1% default fee deducted from your disbursement may be better depnding on your situation. Not sure how cooperative NYCOM would be with choosing another lender just to keep a 1% fee that has to be paid regardless.
Private Loans might be better than the Grad Plus depending on fees, your credit, and what the interest rate comes out to for your private loan.
Perkins and the other need based loans are great if you can get them.
$36,667 is the TOTAL amount we can borrow combining Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidize? This NYCOM FA folder say so and I think its the first time I noticed/read that.
PlasticMan 04-06-2006, 09:26 AM I have a question for the form "Title VII Supplemental Data Request Form For SDS and PCL": For the line that says "I come from a health profession shortage area or medically under-served community, " I remember on my AMCAS application(allopathic) next to both my place of birth and the town I currently live in there was a (U) meaning under-represented. Does this mean I can check that box?
Mike2010 04-06-2006, 09:32 AM Nice,,, we start classes on my 23rd birthday haha. I got my financial aid stuff yesterday, tried to call them a few minutes ago to see how this all plays out w/ a military scholarship but i think they are at lunch until 1pm since i got the answering machine. On another note, it would be totally sweet if there were some good intramural programs in place when we get there.

HG, I'm still confused. Should we just check "maximum allowed" for #7 and #8 on the form if we don't have any outside assistance?

I don't know how true this is. Anyone else that talked to them said that orientation will most likely be the same as last year (tues-fri orientation, starting classes the following monday). I guess we'll just have to wait until the officially post it.
HunterGatherer 04-06-2006, 03:31 PM Definitely checking off 7. I'm not sure of the process to decline the loan for #8 GRAD PLUS if you find a better private loan. 8.5% interest rate on Grad Plus might not be a great interest rate. Seems like 4% in fees come out of your loan when it is disbursed for GRAD Plus and I see a lot of advice that this is not ideal.

nwg331 04-09-2006, 04:11 PM Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum...just decided on NYCOM for the Fall. Going a bit crazy over this financial info stuff...just filled out FAFSA today. I heard that T.H.E. as a lender is a good option for both private and Stafford...anyone have any thoughts on this? Their website is www.northstar.org. They claim to have no fees on Stafford and private. Any help you guys can provide will be appreciated.
THank you!

TerminatorNYC 04-09-2006, 04:28 PM Hi NYCOMers,
Got my acceptance letter this week and have been deliberating on PBL's merits. I saw several good posts from current students praising both. So far it sounds like PBL students get less time to study especially when they start their clinical with a GP in the second half of first year based on a sample schedule below. I would like to have time to get involved in extracurricular / research at school since I heard from past NYCOM students that stuff as well as high boards help with getting into a competitive residency. Having a bit of a life outside of school would not hurt either. Would appreciate any more info on cons and pros of PBL...
Does anyone know how PBL students get ranked in the total class that is lecture based and PBL combined since they are not taking the same exams?
Also, what are the lecture based classes that PBLers have to attend?
Thanks a lot

BigBoy 04-09-2006, 07:51 PM what's the story with nycom admissions at this point? are they done sending out interviews? and, if so, is there a gpa cutoff or something that i missed? i've been complete since feb-something and haven't heard a peep. they say not call; nice to hear they're so receptive. but, maybe you guys know a little something?
HunterGatherer 04-09-2006, 08:03 PM call to verify you are complete. You may have to call a couple days later if you don't get someone cooperative. This happened to me. Don't know if letters are still going out but they are probably interviewing until May.
minimum GPA for an interview is 2.75 not sure about cut offs.
My stats are slightly similar to yours(32MCAT 3.1GPA) so you should be a good candidate for an interview.

BigBoy 04-09-2006, 08:22 PM thanks--again--for the advice, hunter. so, am i to assume you've actually called them? and, you weren't deemed a national security threat for doing so?
it's almost like they're playing on that old axiom, "if you can't scratch it, it's gonna itch"
HunterGatherer 04-09-2006, 08:39 PM Yes I called to confirm they received August MCAT scores and also LORs. Did you get the letter saying your were complete at NYCOM? Even if you did you should call. Just be patient.
You should've sent LORs by now and you can check if those are in as well. LORs are not needed for an interview though but might speed up an acceptance after an interview.
BigBoy 04-09-2006, 09:29 PM i think i did get the completion letter and that was when they told me not to call. my LORs have been there since time immemorial. i think they're stonewalling me on account of my jersey-freshness. you wanna go lean on em for me, hunter? knock some heads for a fellow non-trad?
Marimba82 04-09-2006, 10:34 PM $36,667 is the TOTAL amount we can borrow combining Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidize? This NYCOM FA folder say so and I think its the first time I noticed/read that.
Actually, I thought this too when i read the info in the NYCOM FA packet. But now that I read it again -- what I think it means is NOT that $36 667 is the TOTAL amount we can borrow with combined Stafford, but $36,667 is the maximum UNSUBSIDIZED Stafford you can borrow at once, above and beyond any amount received by the SUBSIDIZED Stafford (which has its own max limit of $8500).
That makes the total $45,167, I believe. Now the question is -- why does the blue sheet in the packet give the Class of 2010 a maximum for the 2006-2007 year only $40,722? Why can't we borrow from Stafford the maximum that Stafford (subsidized + unsubsidized) allows? I am going to call Fin. Aid and ask them about that......
Also HG and nvshelat, I also am wondering if Grad PLUS is better or worse than getting private loans -- the 8.5% interest rate is INSANEly high! I will try and ask the FA people if they have any advice on whether or not to opt out of Grad PLUS and go for Private Loans instead -- or can you apply for both and go with the best one that you are awarded? not sure....
Marimba82 04-09-2006, 10:37 PM Financial Aid application question --
When filling out the FAFSA, the NYCOM financial aid app, and other documents, should I put my current permanent address (I live in Philly), or my future permanent address that I will have while at school (I am moving to NY in July) ? What did you all do?
Thanks for the help! :)

Hey Marimba,
So I just spoke with the ever so helpful financial aid lady (I would say "office" but I really think its just this one lady). She said that she thinks Grad Plus will be a better way to go bc it will be a fixed rate whereas private loans will be a variable rate. Private Loan rates = PRIME + Credit Risk + Profit. So I suppose our decision rests on whether or not the FED will raise rates again.
For what it's worth, I think the FAO (FAL?) is right, although I thought at first that private would be better. The prime this week is at 7.75 and the Fed is poised to raise rates again. Even if they only raise .25, that puts us at 8% - if inflation continues, that rate will go higher than the 8.5 fixed rate we can get via Grad Plus. So the question is, Do you feel lucky, punk? Well, do you?
The long and short of it is, I don't know. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I'm looking into the T.H.E. programs and will post on here as soon as I find out. In the meantime, I asked the FAL which boxes I should check - she said both Stafford and Grad Plus while we wait for the Grad Plus website to get ready.
HunterGatherer 04-10-2006, 12:50 PM nvshelat,
Good info. You're going to be a financial aid pro soon. Maybe you can help out the FAL with answering the phones. :)

Thanks a lot for the info, nv! Your information was definitely helpful , don't worry about that!
It's good to know what the PRIME rate is and I agree with you -- that's pretty high to begin with and going to probably get higher, so the fixed rate of the Grad PLUS might be the lesser of the two evils ;)
On the flip side, the private loans have little or no fees attached to them, and if you have good credit, then they might be the way to go.
When i called the NYCOM FAO today -- I spoke to the FAL as well! She said the two main FA advisors (Tom and Claire) were actually away at a conference this whole week, so if for real advice, she told me to call back next Monday. The FAL advised not applying for both Grad PLUS and private loans because it hurts your credit.
By the way, HG, the $8500 Stafford Subsidized limit is for everyone, but the $36,667 limit for the Unsubsidized is only for third years (total of $45,167). For us first years, Unsubsidized limit is $40,722 - $8500 = $32,222.

My name is Debbie and I will be joining you guys at NYCOM come August. I'm new to the SDN, but I was accepted to NYCOM back in February. I'm 23 from Delran, NJ (20 min outside of Philadelphia) and graduated from The College of New Jersey (Biology and Women's Studies Major) in May 2005. I've been working over the past year and saving up to make the Med School transition a little easier. Really I just wanted to introduce myself, and I really look forward to meeting you all soon :o

That sounds near the average for NYCOM. Get a DO letter. NYCOM's Open House is around October/November. Be sure to talk to Ms. Rodika Zaika and Ms. Taryn Croot.
I like your signature though!

shenningdo 04-17-2006, 02:01 PM Hi All-
Quick question #1 - the only papers we need to return to the FAO is the NYCOM Preliminary Application for Financial Aid, NYCOM Authorization Statement, Sallie Mae Entrance/Exit Interview Checklist, and Title VII Supplemental Data form... is this correct?
Quick question #2 - we only need to file online the FAFSA, TAP, and either GRAD PLUS or Private... is this correct? (GRAD PLUS cannot be filled out for a while, I know).
Thanks!

You need to sign the online promissory note as well for Stafford loans. This is done on the same site for private and GRAD Plus loans.

I am a permanent resident of NY but currently live in NJ for school. I filled TAP out with no problem. If you are a NY resident but do not live there now, I think you are golden. If you are not a NY resident and only consider yourself a NY reseident once you move there, I am not sure. That is something HG and NVShelat may need to answer seeing as how they have all the answers ;)!

I signed the promissory note already, but I did not print anything out to return to the school. Was there something I was supposed to print out and mail back to the school, or can the school see the signed promissory note online when they want to?
Thanks!

Cool. Nothing to send to the school for the promissory note once signed online. The printout/pdf is for your own records.

I believe the TAP is for NYS residents only -- so I believe you have to be a NYS resident when you apply.
Here are the criteria from the TAP website --
Who Is Eligible?
To be eligible for TAP, a student must:
* Be a United States citizen or eligible noncitizen.
* Be a legal resident of New York State.
* Study full time (at least 12 credits per semester) at an approved postsecondary institution in New York State. Link here for a listing of TAP school codes.
* Have graduated from high school, or have a GED, or have passed a federally-approved exam demonstrating the student can benefit from the education offered.
* Be matriculated in an approved program of study and be in good academic standing.
* Have at least a cumulative "C" average after receipt of two annual payments.
* Be charged at least $200 tuition per year.
* Not be in default on a student loan guaranteed by HESC and not be in default on any repayment of state awards.
* Meet income eligibility limitations.
For those of who are not current NYS residents, I think we can establish residency (driver's license, voting, permanent address, etc.) in NY while at school and then apply for TAP second year. Will need to confirm that with the FA office.....
And yes, btw, shenn, i think you got all the papers sent off just fine! I know there are a gazillion of them.
Btw, don't forget the Immunization form to be sent back by July 15th!
HunterGatherer 04-17-2006, 09:33 PM FYI: From what I gathered TAP maxes out at $550/year for graduate school. It's a grant so it is great if you can get it.
Marimba82 04-18-2006, 11:37 AM For those of you who have finished the online application for Stafford (through NYCOM/Sallie Mae as lender) , I have a question:
-- Should we check the box that asks us if we want to pay interest for unsubsidized loans while in school? What I mean is, does anyone know what happens if you check the box, and then decide you don't want to pay interest during school, or if you DON'T check the box now, but later realize you would like to pay interest? I mean, it seems a little early to decide right? Can we change our decision later?
Sorry for the lengthy question! Thanks in advance for advice and input everyone!

lilzelda 04-18-2006, 05:47 PM I have some questions
1. If were doing the PCL or SDS do we have to submit our parents income tax form because the last question of the preliminary application for fin. aid says "therefore, I am submitting my parents 2005 income" with this paper?
2. Are u guys checking max allowed or are u guys actually putting down numbers?
nvshelat 04-18-2006, 06:17 PM 2. Are u guys checking max allowed or are u guys actually putting down numbers?
Max - if I get more than I need, I can send it back right away. I believe that Stafford doesn't have early payment fees.

Yup -- to qualify for any of these Title VII loans, you need to include parents' income & tax info regardless of age or marital status.
noonday 04-19-2006, 12:24 PM hi! i just found this thread...long past time to move from pre-osteo to here...
whooo!!!
anyway, reading all this now has me all freaked out. i had felt like it was time to rest with respect to all this school stuff, after almost 2 years of MCAT, application, interviews...but i guess not.
financial aid, DPC apps, housing...AAAAAH! i don't have the forms yet, and i'm already freaking out. not to mention that likely there's a required physical and proof of immunization of somesort. and i have to find and train a replacement at work, and one at the clinic, and one at the needle exchange, and then do all the business of moving my life to NY from the west coast... i want to crawl under a rock.
fin aid: i filled out FAFSA, and it seems to think that even though i'm a single income 30 year old, that somehow i can contribute 17K a year??!!?? i most certainly cannot...is this what private loans cover?
DPC: they only take 40 ppl for it? i mean, i could deal if i didn't get into it, but it was a major selling point and for some reason i mistakenly thought they said 40%, not 40 ppl. i'm just too old and have spent too much time in grad school and as a prof. scientist and a lay healthcare worker to happily just sit in lectures and take multiple choice tests anymore. lacks any real interest compared to working through cases with people. lectures would make me grumpy and i wouldn't learn as well as i would if i was more self-directed. bah!
housing: well, i'm working that out somehow. been pestering enough about it on shannon's list. but, um, socially...is there anyone else who's older and not married in the class? or will i be the only spinster around who wants to go trolling for fun?
well. hello all. that's my current freak out. hope i don't get cold feet after all this work and just stay a geologist...
Grr how frustarting is all this financial aid stuff??
I have a few questions:
A. The SallieMae Entrance/Exit interview checklist-- what is it and what do we have to do with it? Do we fill out the loan summary part? and whats with the personal refrences?? Do we have to fill it out even though i filled out the promisary note already??
B. The Grad Plus loan: Basically it is an aditional loan on top of the stafford right? Does anyone know the maximum we can borrow? And we dont have to borrow for tuition right- we can borrow the $$ for living expenses? One last question- this loan is only avialable after July so for right now all we can do is fill out the promisary note from the website right?
Sorry for all the questions!!!

I just called the lady asking about the references too and she said that we need to put down three, so i put my mother and two freinds does anybody know if they actually call them?
Also for GRADPLUS they say its the extra cost left over thats not covered by stafford but do they include cost of housing and living in school expenses or is it just tution?
Marimba82 04-19-2006, 01:09 PM anyway, reading all this now has me all freaked out. i had felt like it was time to rest with respect to all this school stuff, after almost 2 years of MCAT, application, interviews...but i guess not.
Time flies, but you still have enough of it, so don't freak out -- there might be a lot of forms but once you get them and look at them, they will make sense and everything will fall into place, I'm sure! Plus, reading this ENTIRE thread all at once can really stress you out, so next time, don't do that ;)
financial aid, DPC apps, housing...AAAAAH! i don't have the forms yet, and i'm already freaking out. not to mention that likely there's a required physical and proof of immunization of somesort.
yes, moving and packing sucks the most. Much more than all these darn NYCOM forms! I am not sure about the required physical -- did i miss that on the yellow form? I think we just need to submit proof of immunization incl. (non-mandatory, but recommended) recent meningitis vaccination.
fin aid: i filled out FAFSA, and it seems to think that even though i'm a single income 30 year old, that somehow i can contribute 17K a year??!!?? i most certainly cannot...is this what private loans cover?
Don't worry about your EFC either -- I am single and financially independent on a very low salary, yet my EFC was also way higher than I could possibly afford. However, I spoke to Claire Jacobi at the Financial Aid office about it and she assured me that it was still low enough (in comparison to the sky-high cost of attending NYCOM) that I would still be eligible for maximum Stafford loans (which would cover up to about $40K, plus private loans or Grad PLUS loans to cover the rest, $10-20K for things like living expenses). Contact her at the financial aid office, and tell her your EFC and she can definitely advise you on your specific concerns.
DPC: i'm just too old and have spent too much time in grad school and as a prof. scientist and a lay healthcare worker to happily just sit in lectures and take multiple choice tests anymore. lacks any real interest compared to working through cases with people. lectures would make me grumpy and i wouldn't learn as well as i would if i was more self-directed.
Now explain that all nicely in a coherent, concise, awesome essay, and I'm sure you'll have a great shot at making it in! Also, I think the sooner you submit, the better.
Hope that helps!

From what I have gathered, the Entrance interview checklist is just a piece of paper to prove that you 1) know what you're signing up for and 2) know that you will eventually have to pay it all back!!
Don't fill out the part within the box, but yes, fill out the references.
The Fin. Aid Lady who picks up the phones told me that the references are relatives/friends who know you and (this is the most important part) will know how to get in touch with you at the time of your loan repayment if you don't repay your loan! Seriously. So I put down close friends/family that I know I will still be touch with in case NYCOM needs to check up on me for some crazy reason, 4+ years from now.
Don't worry about the current/future employer part, I didn't put down anything on that line.
Yes the entrance interview checklist has to be filled out and sent back to NYCOM -- the promissory note is done online (that's your stafford application).
Look at the Grad PLUS link that HG posted above, that has info about max limits. I believe Stafford comes first when NYCOM FA office is making up your FA package -- then whatever more $ you need after that will come from private loans or Grad PLUS (whichever you choose). If you are eligible for the maximum Stafford, that should get you about $40K. Beyond that they determine how much more you need based on if you are living with parents or living on your own, and give you additional funding accordingly.
Yes you can fill out the prom. note now, and send in the NYCOM forms, but do the Grad PLUS app when it comes online later in the year.
Hope that helps :)
Ok i really need to stop procrastinating at work now........ :(

Thank you all so much! I get it now!

post 245:
leo 56 - I called today to find out the same information. The admissions office said that the 1st (and only) day of orientation is Monday, August 21st, and classes start the next day. She said the admissions office isn't in charge of these things, and they'll mail us more info at a later date...but so far, the 21st is the date.
I thought the orientation was for a whole week but one day makes more sense.
troll=someone making inflamatory posts just to create arguments.
maybe you were questioning "trolling for fun" = looking for fun. trolling=fishing technique.

DPC: they only take 40 ppl for it? i mean, i could deal if i didn't get into it, but it was a major selling point and for some reason i mistakenly thought they said 40%, not 40 ppl. i'm just too old and have spent too much time in grad school and as a prof. scientist and a lay healthcare worker to happily just sit in lectures and take multiple choice tests anymore. lacks any real interest compared to working through cases with people. lectures would make me grumpy and i wouldn't learn as well as i would if i was more self-directed. bah!
This link might give you some reassurance on EFC and stafford loan amounts. Seems like everyone get the full amount of stafford loans:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=271877&highlight=subsidized
If you are not working and don't have any means to provide housing, food etc. for yourself then you will need private loans for that.
housing: well, i'm working that out somehow. been pestering enough about it on shannon's list. but, um, socially...is there anyone else who's older and not married in the class? or will i be the only spinster around who wants to go trolling for fun?
Don't get a boyfriend. They take up too much time and energy. Are you available to do any babysitting for me and my wife? We don't get out much.
