Dear UHS SDNers,

I know everyone received the e-mail from LeAnn about Danielle, aka Solie to us SDNers, and I just wanted to express my (and I'm sure our) deepest regards for the recent tragedy involving her fiance. WE LOVE YOU DANIELLE & hope you are able to return safe soon!!

Peace,
Hillary

I came to the board tonight for the same reason as Hillary. Danielle, just know that we will all be here for you when you. I can only say that my heart aches for you as I heard of this. Although nothing can be said to take away your heartache, know that many of us would love to do anything we can to offer support. Let us know.

I haven't me you yet, but certainly hope to.

As the first week of classes closed down, I realized that I still don't know a few of you in person. For instance, Mary--where do you sit?? I sure enjoyed talking to you on the phone. I need to find you Monday.

Also--what did everyone think of the first week?

Hey Future Docs--
First off, I too want to express my deepest sympathy and empathy to Solie. I cannot even begin to know how you must feel. I want to extend my thoughts for you and if I or anyone can do anything for you, please let one of us know. Becky said she would email you the notes; no problem.

As far as the first week, I think it went pretty good. At the beginning, I was kind of skeptical, but as the week wore on, I began to feel more comfortable with the material. I realized I had had a lot of it before, and luckily, I could remember some of it. Not to say that I am not going to have to study a lot, because I am. I really want to get the first quiz out of the way, so that I will know what to expect from all the profs.

I want to applaud Dr. McWorter and Dr. Karius for their excellent lectures given this week. Dr. Cole and Dr. Thomas did a good job as well.

Well have a great weekend everyone. I will see you Monday morning.

Anna,
I was thinking the same thing last week..."Where's Anna???".
I sit in seat #99 in the right hand section about 5 or 6 rows back. I saw your picture in the file that D. Mc. sent us, so now I know what you look like!!

UHS is a great school. I am REALLY happy to be going here!!!!!!!!!!

Prayers for Solie....

Mary, Just wanted to say that I'm so glad to have met you. Hope you're having a good afternoon.

Has anyone heard anything about solie?? I just keep thinking about her.

I guess that's it for now. I have to get to studying.

Hello fellow UHSers--
Well the first couple weeks have been pretty crazy huh? All the info.....all the lectures......I think we will be fine for the most part. I am a little apprehensive about the quiz on Tuesday. I feel I have a grasp for the material, but the matter of spitting it on to the paper is another story.

What are you all doing for the weekend? I am going to the superb, spectacular Watermelon Festival in Clyde, KS. WOO-HOO! Actually it isn't that cool. We are playing softball on Sunday and Monday. So I am going to seclude myself in between games and such to study. Plus coming back early on Monday to hit it really hard.

Hope you guys have a great and exciting weekend, learning about DNA, the TCA cycle, parasympathetic and so on!!!!!

Have fun!!

Hey guys--
Well we made it through the first quiz. I feel like the quiz itself was pretty good, in the aspect of questions that seemed pretty fair. I myself have no idea how I did.......just know that I didn't get below a 56%!!!!

Anyway, hope you all feel the same way, as far as how things are going.

Has anyone heard from Solie?? Just wondering how she is doing!!

See ya later!

Chris

I agree with you Chris--the questions were pretty much all fair. I feel pretty good about the quiz. I am mostly just happy to know what it's really like. I'll be excited to get the scores, however, I was disappointed to get only the info we got today, especially since the mean could even change just a little. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long.

I wish we would hear something from Solie.

What did you all think of Dr. Friedlander's presentation this afternoon??

Keep up the good work guys!

Hi again everyone....

I just got back into town this afternoon. I went up to school at 4:00 to meet with some people in Admin about how I'm going to get back on track, especially considering I've missed the first quiz. Everyone at the school is being so supportive and I am so appreciative of their understanding. They are also putting me in contact with a grief counsellor, which is something I know I need. I usually consider myself a strong person who's able to get through tough situations on my own, but I know in my heart that I can't get through this alone and that I need help.

I'm so grateful for all of your support...even though I haven't even met a lot of you yet. I'm in seat #166 if you want to come say hi. I'll look for those of you I haven't met yet also. A lot of people back home have told me they just don't know what to say to me, so are staying away. If you want to come talk to me, please don't be afraid of saying the "wrong thing". I'd rather have people say something "wrong" than not say anything at all. The last thing I want is to make other people feel uncomfortable, which I know can happen in these situations.

It's so hard to be back here. I almost didn't come back at all. I think I'm still in shock, even though it's been 2 weeks today since his death. The reason I'm back is because I know how much Chia (my fiance) wanted this for me. I know how proud he was of me for getting in and how excited he was for the life we were building together, of which becomming a doctor was a big part. Right now I'm doing this for him, and for him alone. The last thing I want is to let him down, because I know he's still with me almost every moment of the day, and I know how disappointed he would be in me if I quit. Maybe in a while I'll be able to do it for myself as well, but right now it's so hard to be here, and I'm doing it entirely for him. He was my strength, my support, my inspiration and my motivation in life, and continues to be so in death.

I'm still fighting back tears at almost every moment of the day, so please understand if I'm not my usual happy self the next time we meet. I'm sure it will come back eventually, but right now I'm too overcome with grief. I hope none of you, or anyone you know, ever have to experience what I am going through right now. I feel empty and numb, and I miss him so much.

I'm sorry this post is so sad...but in a way it makes me feel better to let some of the sadness out. I hope you don't mind, but in my next post, I'd like to tell you just how great of a person Chia was and how much I've learned from him and how he lived his life. I promise it'll be a lot more positive than this one. I just feel like it's so important that other people get a glimpse into the wonderfulness that was (and is) him.

Thank you for listening...and please take care,
~~Danielle~~

Solie--

Definitely do not feel bad for writing about these huge emotions you are having. In June after my grandma (who I was very close to) died I came to this board and talked about how I felt and what the experience meant to me. I understand how it can be a good thing to talk about it, even to people you don't know well. Ever since I heard about you leaving for home, I have been thinking about you. I could never understand exactly what it feels like, but because I just got engaged a few weeks ago, I can feel that sick feeling that must go along with you each day.

I have to say that it won't get completely better. Isn't it scary to watch how life does just go on though. I have faced a lot of death in my family and each and every time I can't believe that everything just goes on. Especially that I just start to pick things up and go on.

I know he will be so proud of you. Let me know of anything I can do for you. You can look at my notes...anything.

Thank you for sharing your story. I will definitely come try to find you this week, if you're in class.

Take care of yourself, first and foremost.

Hi Solie,
It was soooooo good to see you in class again. I'm really glad that you're back. Seeing that seat empty in front of me just didn't seem right. To say that I even have an ounce of understanding what you're going through is ludicrous. But, I just wanted to say that we're here for you. If there's something that you want to share about, or express or whatever, we're here for you. Hang in there, sis. Take it one day a time. I'm sure that Chia is proud of ya. Kind of interested in knowing more about him. All right, I'll see ya tomorrow bright and early...

Dear Danielle,
My deepest condolences to you! Most of us cannot even begin to imagine what you are going through, but I am sure I speak for our entire class when I say that we are glad to have you back.
I remember quite vividly meeting you (along with Raj) by the elevators at CT the evening you learned about Chia ? you were so shocked that you couldn?t even muster tears as you told us in so many words about what had happened. Ever since then I, too, had been watching that empty seat and wondering if you would be back. I browsed through some of the previous threads on SDN and read the ones in which you talked about your fianc?, and your plans and your dreams??? I wondered if I would have the courage to come back. And, while I do not have an answer to my question, I am glad to see that you do to yours, for surely you have questioned your resolve a thousand times during these past few days. I can only say that I am in awe of your courage, and think your return speaks volumes about how committed you are to Chia, and how much his dreams for the two of you mean to you. Bravo! I find in you inspiration that is exceedingly rare, as I am sure do many of our classmates.
I am not sure that time necessarily heals all wounds, but then I am not sure that all wounds are meant to be healed either. In any case, rest assured that at least time will pass, as it has a tendency to do. Someday, when you are not looking, the pain and the fear and the numbness that you are now feeling will give way to the more memorable moments you spent with him?..perhaps a dinner, or a dance, or a foolish antic. And, though his void will likely always remain (we should all be so fortunate as to love someone whose void can never be filled!), you will find ways to fill it the best you can with the memories that you and only you shared with him??perhaps his smile, or his smell, or his words, or his fears??.things that you took for granted then, things that the rest of us take for granted even now?..will find new meaning in your life, and you will find in them a comfort that you probably never knew existed.
You can also count on the tears to return again, someday, somewhere, as you sit and think about ?what if?..? Those are likely to be the toughest of times, but as I bear in mind the courage you are displaying now, I imagine that you will be fine as well in the times that lie ahead.
As for the rest of us, life will likely go on as before. Some days we will see you and be reminded of your troubles, for it will be clear on your face; and some days we will see you and have no inkling of them, for your smile will have returned. Whatever the days ahead may bring your way, I would just like you to know that we are here for you; you need only call upon us to share, be it the grief that he is gone, or be it the joy that he happened to begin with.
I will look forward to hearing about Chia and his life.

With regards,

drchris33

Hi again everyone,

Because people have been asking, and also because I just want to share with everyone a little part of who my fiance was, here's a link (at the bottom) to one of the on-line tributes to him. It was done by the motorcycle club he rode with, who are an amazing bunch of people.

Some of the pictures are older ones, from years ago, which I found funny to see, but there are a lot of newer ones as well. Plus you get to see the bike he loved SO much, and at the end is a sample of his artwork...a bike, of course. =)

Chia was so naturally talented in everything he did. He had such an amazing passion for life, and although it's such a cliche, he really did live every day to the fullest. He accomplished more in his short 26 years than most people do in their entire lives.

Everything he did, he did with drive and determination to be the very best he could be, and he inspired more people with his passion and enthusism for life than he could possibly imagine (as even I learned by the over 500 people who turned out for his memorial services!).

It's funny, too, because he said to me once that he didn't think anyone would show up to his funeral when he died. He must have been in shock watching as group after group of people filed into the church for him. It was filled, and some people had to spend the service outside, looking in through the windows. His motorcycle friends all rode their bikes in a long procession, in full gear, to honor him, which he was probably just THRILLED about. =) He was the happiest I have ever seen him whenever he was suiting up for a ride, and he talked about, read about and studied bikes and riding with such energy and committment. His skill level as a rider was textbook perfect, and he was really well known in the biking community for it back home.

Chia was loving, compassionate, and had a great sense of humor. He was full of energy, always put the needs of his friends before his own, and was always there whenever you needed him. He would make every imaginable effort to make it to every dinner or get-together his friends were having, even if it meant a 30 minute drive out of his way when he could only pop in for a quick "hello." He was someone I knew I could depend on, no matter what the situation. Chia made it one of his priorities to make me as happy as possible, and to make my life run as smoothly as possible, regardless of how much I told him I could do things for myself. I told him all the time how much I appreciated him. I really feel so honored to be the one person he chose to share his life with. I'll always be proud of everything we were to each other and the life we shared together. A good friend told me that it's better to spend 3 years with your soulmate and lose him, than never to have met him at all, and it's so true. I'm grateful each and every day for the time we had together.

Chia was the most brilliant person I have ever known. He graduated at the very top of his class in college, and won tons and tons of awards in everything he was involved in, from academics, to athletics, to art. He was so modest about them, though. I didn't even know about most of them until I came across them somewhere in the apartment. Then he would just shrug them off, because to him he did things for the pure joy of it, not to be recognized.

He was a world class dragonboat paddler, who was training to be on the Canadian Olympic team. He coached a team in his "spare" time, too. He also spent weekends teaching other people to ride motorcycles. He was a tireless advocate for wearing full protective gear while riding, which saved him so many times before (he's had 5 previous motorcycle accidents).

In addition to his full-time work, Chia was a University instructor in the faculty he graduated from, because he loved to teach. He spent so much time with his students, inspiring them and encouraging them. He would take them out to eat before exams, and talk with them in the middle of the night on ICQ so they could ask him last minute questions, too. A lot of them came to his service to tell me how much more than just an instructor he was to them.

Chia was a friend to everyone who met him. He was one of those people you have an instant connection with, right away-- someone you instantly thought was a really cool person, and just wanted to know more about and hang out with because you knew he had fun wherever he went. We couldn't walk down any street in Toronto without him knowing someone. And romantic dinners out alone were never really alone...there was always someone in the restaurant he just had to say "Hi" to. =)
Whenever we went to a party, by the end of the night he would have made friends with just about every person there, complete with full contact info in his ever-present Palm Pilot. ;)

I met Chia when we were 13 years old and in highschool together. We used to talk about the very day we met, because we both still remembered it so well. We felt an instant connection to each other, even at that young age. It's something I've never experienced before, and kept us in contact with each other, in one way or another, over all the years we knew each other, until we were ready to be together a few years ago. We are both big believers in fate, and knew we were fated to be together from the beginning. We had (and still have) the most incredible connection with each other. It's so strong that I can feel his presence even now.

Thank you to everyone who wanted to know more. Chia will always be my inspiration, my motivation and my strength. His memory lives on in those who were blessed enough to have known him, and in those who learn about him even now.

Take care,

~~Danielle~~

Hey guys--
Just checking in to see how the studying is going with you all. I think I am not going to do as well on this quiz as I did on the last one. The material is tougher to comprehend, plus it was just thrown at us some randomly.

Well hope you all can summon the brain cells necessary to do well on Monday!!!

See you then!!!!

So how did the quiz go for everyone?? I sure wish I knew the curve. I guess it doesn't really matter though. Sounds like it definitely was a tough quiz for everyone in comparison to the last one. I just hope we don't spend all our time blaming the test and test writers. Hopefully the next week and a half will go well.

Keep your heads up, kids!

Hey guys--
Anyone else totally dreading Friday? I am sitting here, staring at the size of my notebook (3" binder) and it is overflowing with paper. It is really hard to fathom that we actually "learned" this much info already. I think I will be locking myself in my apt for the next like 70+ hours in order to prepare for this butt kicking exam.

How are you guys all studying for it? We already know that Rogan's questions will suck!!! But as for the rest, I guess I am just going to go back through everything: notes, flashcards, review books, etc.

Well see you guys in the am

Well guys, the first section is over with. I passed FOM. I didn't receive the raw score I would have liked on the final, but hopefully there will be numerous challenges to help us out.

Well guys, we finally got our FOM grades. I, for one, wasn't really satisfied with my grade. I mean I passed and all, I am just frustrated. I feel that the amount of time I have been studying that I should be doing better than I did.

Oh well, musculoskeletal should go better, I hope!!!! Have a nice weekend everyone!!

I'm so glad we got our FOM grades. It's helpful to know how you did once and for all. I am happy with my grade, but because I was right on the line I'm also a little disappointed in my one or two point distance from the next grade. But that's just how it goes.

I personally think that this section is harder due to the anatomy. The anatomy takes me so much time to really feel like I'm learning it well enough.

Have a great weekend! Don't forget to get away from studying some this weekend, I'm sure we'll all want to study quite a bit the following weekend.

Hope everyone has had a good weekend. All I have done is studied; I had kind of a lazy week, so I am catching up. I really think this section will be much better than the last one. I really didn't like FOM that much, although I have noticed that I actually do remember some stuff from it.

Well I guess back to studying; have the great rest of the weekend and see you tomororw!

I guess I can always have faith that Chris (or one of y'all) will still be performing palliative care on this thread until we die first!! You bet!! I will do my best to keep our page running, until I am put in the nursing home, which probably won't have the internet. I will have SDN put on my tombstone! :)

I really think it is a great website, especially to those that are first entering medical school; I know I learned a great deal about school through it

Well, one more quiz and 1000 more practicals to go until skin/blood/lymph!

Hi all,

I'm interviewing at UHS next month  and my wife is coming out as well so we can check out KC for a few days leading up to the interview. My question to all of you is this: is there anything for spouses (esp. out of towners like us) to do while we are going on tours of campus and during the interview? I know that there is something going on the night before the interview, but I was hoping for suggestions for things for her to do during the day of the interview (hopefully close to campus). She will have our almost 1 year old daughter with her. Are there any of you who have spouses/significant others who would be willing to be tour guides?

Thanks in advance,

Hey all,

first . . thank you all who have written welcoming messages on the 2007 board, everyones support has been great, and I look forward to embracing all of your advice. I had a question about first year books. I have several freinds who have completed medical school, and have offered me thier books. I was wondering of one of you might make a list of all the first and even second year books that we will need? This way some of us who come accross good deals can grab them early. I understand that not all books listed will be needed, and not all books needed will be listed. That is why I wanted to post this here as apposed to referencing the school list. Those of you who are kind enough and have the time to respond, if you could please list authors that would be great. Thanks a ton in advance, John :D

drchris33
10-26-2002, 11:45 AM
John--
Well, if you have spoken to any recent students, I am sure most of them would have told you that you don't really need that many books. Here is a short list for recommendations from me, but this is just one person's persective; by the way, anytime you ask a medical student about a book, we most generally use the authors' names:

Clinically Oriented Anatomy--Moore/Daly
Altas of Human Anatomy--Netter
Lippencott's 2nd Edition Review for Biochemistry
Baby Robbins for Pathology
A good histology atlas

Other than that, you really don't need to get any other books. But if you feel compelled to do so, I would suggest buying the Board Review Series books. Also get First Aid for the USMLE and Step Up. Those two are boards review books that are good to start looking at during your year.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please let me know. You can either post on here, PM me or send me an email.

Chris

Old Yeller

I would add Microbiology Made Rediculously Simple, Wheater's for Histology, and OPP Crunch for OMT. We really haven't had too much physiology yet, so the jury's out on that. :)

LovelyRita
10-28-2002, 06:53 AM
Hi,
I agree with Chris and Yeller's picks.

The Histology Atlas is very helpful. I have "Atlas of Functional Histology" by Kerr.

"Listen to my words!" (you'll hear this next year from a certain instructor): :) ASSUME THE worst, that you'll be buying a few books. The ones that Chris and Yeller listed I would say are absolutely necessary. It's all about the way you learn!!
Before I started this year I heard numerous times "Don't buy books, don't buy books". Yes, you WILL need some books. But DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT TILL YOU GET HERE! Don't buy anything from anyone until you are sure that it's a required book, because if they didn't use it, you might not either, and you could spend your $$ on something you do need.

Anyway, in summary, you'll need some books. Don't sell yourself short by underbudgeting and not buying any.

Yours,
M.

Man, can you guys believe that this time next week we will be cramming/studying our butts off for the finals for Musculoskeletal?? The section flew by!! I personally would like a few extra days of preparation. I think I am really behind and doubt I will be ready for the exams next week.

Well hope you guys are all doing well!

Mary, you have been a posting machine lately! Good work!

See you in class

Well we are getting ready for our week of hell!! Man I wish we had like at least one extra day to prepare. I feel so behind and I don't know if I will be ready. Actually I know I won't be.

I want to wish everyone the best of luck on the upcoming exams. This will be our worst week of medical school yet.

I went up to Liberty ER last night and shadowed for about six hours. It was a lot of fun; I learned a lot and the docs were great. Didn't get to see any real action, but I had the chance to just listen on history taking, and I was trying to figure out the diagnoses. I think I was on the right track on some of them, but definitely not all of them

Anyway, good luck everyone and see on Monday morning bright and early!!!!!!

Wow! What a week we have ahead of us...you're right about all that Chris. I hope everyone is having a good weekend. Hopefully you're all relaxing a little as well as studying. It's tough to know what to cover when you have a quiz, practicals, and the final coming up. Can you believe how much you're learning already?!

Don't feel bad if you're feeling behind. I think we all are going through those emotions.

Here's a question--Do the individual quiz averages and standard deviations even matter? Are they actually doing the "curving" at the very end? How on earth does that work? Do quizzes count toward the paperwork that will be sent out for our residencies??

The reason I ask is this: i think if people could truly understand how this works, maybe the class wouldn't be so uptight about the quizzes and grades and such.

Well, I know I had more I wanted to say, but for now that's all I can remember.

Get a good night sleep tonight!

11-03-2002, 03:06 PM
Anna--
I have no clue on how that ends up working in the end. To me, if I can get a decent grade (at least a B), then I am happy. As long as I can learn something and retain it instead of cramming and dumping. I was out shadowing at Liberty in the ER on Friday night. I was following around a DO, first year out of residency. Every time I went into a room with him, I tried to go through everything in my head that we had learned that could be pertinent to that patient. Some of the time I was sort of on the right track, but other times I wasn't. And heck, I think that isn't too bad, considering it is only our second section. But I saw some X-rays and answered a few questions asked of me.

so I think we are learning stuff, just have such a long way to go.

Good luck tomorrow to everyone as well as the rest of the week!

I completely agree with you guys about the numbers and grades. I just thought that if it was explained to the class, some of those who are so hung up on it, could learn the same. To me, this time is definitely not about the numbers and the grades--stay above average and I'll be happy. I want to learn the information, not memorize small tidbits for a test.

Chris--that's awesome you got to go shadow, that really can remind you what you're doing this for...a great motivator.

Yeah... I'm pretty guilty of faithfully checking what's going on at SDN. As Hillary would say, I'm constantly lurching. Right now, I think I'm done studying for anatomy. It's gotten to the point where I can just study from Netter's. I'm really concentrating on the final right now. As for path...the only studying I do for path is when I'm at school with you guys looking at slice of life or listening in with the tutors. This is nuts...
OK good luck guys and study hard!

First, thanks Chris for being such an awesome quizzer/tutor in the lab last night. It is very much appreciated.

What's up y'all--
Well I just want to congratulate everyone for making it through last week!! It was hell but I am sure we did fine. It was also nice to see so many of our classmates out on Friday night. It was a real good time. I think most of us (me included) had a little too much ethanol intake, but it was definitely worth it. We had worked so hard for the past few weeks! That being said.....

On to Skin/Blood/Lymph! I know it is supposed to be one of the hardest sections but then which section isn't hard????

Well I need to brush up on OPP so I will see you guys later!!!!

I know how you feel. I heard a rumor that we have quiz review tomorrow, but who the heck knows. We wont find out our grades until right before Christmas break probably. I am sure there will be 1542.5 challenges for our final.

I am trying to get back motivated to study. That long break from lectures (over a week) just has made me lazy, other than studying for the finals. Almost through the material for today.

Hey Stump,
Yeah, you were right about skin, blood and lymph. It's an overwhelming section. We had three lectures with Dr. Hubbard so far. He's a great lecturer, but he presents the material at breakneck speed. Anything you wish to share???

LovelyRita
11-24-2002, 06:36 PM

I heard that studying the handout is a good idea.

That's all I know.
M.:p

Stump
11-24-2002, 07:35 PM
There's no real secret to Hubbard's questions. Sometimes he'll throw you a bone........but when he does, beware..... some of the time what he says will be a test question will never show up on the actual test. His questions do come directly from his notes...but that's not much help when the guy presents 100+ slides in a 50 minute period (and that will happen soon if it hasn't happend yet). Sorry, I don't have any real advice for Hubbard. You can't know it all (like you guy's haven't already figured that one out). Just know the big picture for Hubbard. One thing I can give advice on is Quizbank. By the time the final comes along, you guys will have close to 1000 quizbank questions for ERF. So don't slack on those.......KEEP UP WITH QUIZBANK....those are free points and if you put it off, there will be no way to cram the days leading up to the final. Other than that, just keep up the hard work and before you know it X-mas break will be here. GOOD LUCK ALL!!!!!!

I just showed up at the hospital to see how everyone was doing and the surgery girls asked if I wanted to scrub in. And what do you think I said.......Hell yeah!!
It was great. Got to stitch up two of the four lap incisions. Pretty fun! Now today I have to study quite a bit; to catch up for this section plus look over the new blood material.
Be safe in coming back to school.....dont wanna read about anyone in the papers!

See you on Monday.....rested and relaxed?? Oh man, another papulosquamous rigid bumpy erythematous scale-like rash....how did that get there?? My Hgb is still alpha-2 gamma-2

Hi all,

I hope everyone's Thanksgivings were tons and tons of family fun. :) Being the proud Canadian that I am and all, I celebrated our Thanksgiving last month, so this is just a nice mini vacation for me away from school.

I'm in Toronto right now, and it's SO cold here! It hit me as soon as I stepped out of the airport. You have no idea how happy I am to not have to spend another winter in this crazy city! I really don't know why people live here.

I'm having a great time with friends here...even though I had to lug all my notes from Blood, Sweat, and Tears here with me to go over on my "down time". I KNOW I bombed that exam big time. My mind had already boarded the plane back here 3 days beforehand. All I know is that EVERYTHING looks maculopapular to me, and erythematous is always a good bet as well. :)

I'm taking an extended break and won't be back until Tuesday night, so I'll see you all in class on Wednesday.

Have a safe journey back to KC! :)

Dear "bloody Mary" & other hemorrhaging SDNers,

This is the week of blood for sure-- from lectures on it, to sticking one another, to the blood drive on Friday-- we'll not want to look at another syringe until 3rd year rotations!! :p

Maybe it's all in the holiday theme-- (to the appropriate tune)
"Silver scales, Silver scales, it's Psoriasis time in Kansas City...."
"Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, had a very bloody nose..."
"It came upon a hemolysis clear..."
or maybe even,
"Sickle cells, sickle cells, sludging all the way, oh what fun it is to lyse in a one-spleen kind of way-ay!"

Sorry, had to get that out of my system! Come & see Osteopera :o & Cranial Rhythm :D rock Ricci at noon on Thursday-- woohoo!

I am just speaking for myself here. I live in the Pinnacle Apts. It is just a mile from the school. There is a pool on the top floor. I only pay $405/month. My apartment is a studio, so not much room. But I am only there like 6 hours a night, basically to sleep. also, next to my building is another one called University Towers. It is fairly similar, just a little more expensive.

That is my point of view.

Hey Bloods--
Man I cannot wait for this section to be over. I am like five-six lectures behind still. I thought skin was bad........I think this is worse. Too many anemias, etc.

I should be studying right now, but I think just being overwhelmed is prohibiting me to do so.

Anyone doing a rotation over Christmas?? I am considering maybe just shadowing a little over Christmas at the hospital I used to work at. Just to see if I have learned anything or not. Who knows though. My wife probably won't let me. We will see

Good luck studying this weekend. One more day until the info stops coming in.

Hillary- I think you need to put together a CD, and we can all pitch in and sing on it. Very nice songs!

Haha, sorry, couldn't resist...everyone's always doing the Mary songs, poems and everything, so why not have a "Mary" Christmas? :p :p

As far as ERF goes, Yeller, for me, personally, I'm doing Quizbank alot and reading the lecture notes. The reason why is b/c alot of this stuff is review for me, and it's a bit tedious to "study" it as though I'm learning it all over again...what might actually happen is I'm going to lose track of what I already know....does that make sense?

Hey, I wish there was more of a holiday party for us. Christmas is 2 weeks away. And there should have been more Happy Hanukkah stuff, around, don't you agree?

Hi fellow 2006ers. I just had to comment on those beautiful songs. "Silver Scales" is my personal favorite!

Just a thought on todays material on Luekemia, etc...
Do you think Dr. H (Hem/onc) utilizes oxygen? I seriousy think he just takes one breath before starting a lecture and then ...WWWHHOOOOSSSHHHH! 500 slides and 50 minutes later, another breath. He has "super RBC's" or something.

I went up to him after the 2nd lecture to chat a little, and his face was all wet and he was broken out into a sweat.

Maybe the lectures are his excercise!:) He is SUCH a nice guy though. I don't know how hem/oncers do it everyday.

It is Friday night and I am still studying. Man I hate skin/blood/lymph!!! All the stuff is looking the same and seems to overlap. I have no clue whether to diagnose mono, Hodgkins, or alpha heavy chain disease!!!!! Who the hell cares???

Anyway, I cannot think of anything cool to top Hillary or Mary!

It's beginning to look a lot like finals.....every where you go.....students stressed......hair frizzed....caffeine overload....blood shot eyes...... (I dont know the rest of the tune, so I am just making crap up as you couldn't tell that already!)

Oh well, the only positive way I can look at this is the following:
It is almost Christmas break
Only nine lectures left (really only seven to worry about)
and there wont be much new info for the final!!

I want to wish everyone the best of luck studying this weekend and the next week!

Old Yeller
12-14-2002, 06:58 PM
Hey DocGeorge,
Got the news that you're on the high waiting list, or whatever that means. I really don't know the answer to your question in regards to the number of people who come off that list and matriculate. But, in the meantime, I would seriously consider sending a letter of intent to the administration here at UHS. Just state how much you really feel like UHS is a fit for you. Talk about your wife already being accepted and that you'd also want to go through the medical school experience with her. You might want to emphasize how much the stability of your marriage means to both of you cuz the admin are really down to earth family types. Talk about what you're doing right now and update them with your grades if you're still attending school. In addition to to the letter of intent, call the administration on a regular basis (but use wisdom on how often to call!) to show that this is the school for you. You might want to consider asking a professor or employer who knows you well to write another letter of rec. Like I said before, don't lose hope and keep your chin up! All of us here have our fingers crossed for ya. Let us know what is going on. Laterz :)

Hey 2006ers--
Man, can you believe we are almost through our first semester of medical school already?? Seems like yesterday we were all getting acquainted (except for a few of us psycho SDNers!) at orientation. Although FOM lasted like 5.78 years, everything else has flown by.

What did you think of the quiz today?? I thought it was ok. I didnt smoke it or anything, but I think I did ok.

I want to wish all of yous good luck this week. We can do it!! Only a few more days. Tomorrow is actually our last day of lecture. I think I am punting the gay healthcare lecture. I mean, the lecture isn't concerning healthcare for the homosexual, it just sounds gay! You know what I mean!!

Anyway, I am going to hit a little more quizbank and call it an evening!!!

Later!

I'm looking at the derm portion for the final exam, and IT STILL LOOKS THE SAME!!! ARGH!!!+pissed+ +pissed+ +pissed+
Well, hoping you guys are doing better. It's gonna be a long couple of days and nights. But, I'll say this: I'm very torn over seeing the Two Towers vs. studying. It's a major dilemma. If you guys don't see me on Wednesday night in the library, you know where I am ;)

Hey guys, only one big test to go and then party time!!! I thought the path exam today was kind of tough. But I think it was pretty fair though. I studied quite a bit for the path part, but I still am not sure how I did.

Now it is time to sift through the rain forest of notes again. I wonder exactly how many birds and squirrels lost their homes, just to let us learn the art of medicine??
Who the hell cares, we will be saving lives right/?

That was just a joke.....dont want to step on any nature lover people or whatever you call them........

OK, time to tackle Hubbard yet one more time.....

Good luck guys!!!

Hey buddy! Thought that I was the only one on SDN for the past couple of days. Yeah, the path was tough. I think I put squamous and basal cell carcinoma like three times or so. I don't know if that's good or bad. :( Well, looks like it'll be another long nite at the UHS library. But, I'm really unmotivated to study. I think I spent the last hour or so surfing the web up here. Gotta start studying those anti-neoplastic drugs...mmm...breaded asparagus:clap:

Hi all,

Congratulations on completing your first semester of medical school! I was wondering if I could get some feedback on traffic woes from students living north of the river? I am concentrating my house search on the areas of Parkville (Park Hill School District), and Johnson County, KS (Shawnee Mission School District). Also, is the office at UHS open over the holiday break? I just sent my deposit and I wanted to make sure that it made it there ok.

Thanks,

Congratulations class of 2006 upon completion of your first semester in med school.

Can anyone please tell me what the first year schedule is like. I mean the amount of hours you spent in lectures and the time you spend studying.

What time does class typically starts and when does it ends?

Thanks for you help

UHS07

BamaAlum
12-22-2002, 08:15 AM
To answer your question, we typically are in lectures from 8-12 every morning. Each lecture is 50 minutes with a 10 minute break in between. The afternoons consist of labs. We have our OPP and Pathology labs on Monday, our Core Communications lab on Wednesdays, but it doesn't meet every week, and on Thursdays we have Intro. to Clinical Medicine lab. During the sections that have Anatomy those labs are usually on Tuesday and Thursdays, depending on your lab group. When we have Micro. lab it is usually on Tuesday afternoon. These are the general times. Each section is different and variable when it comes to the afternoon labs.
As far as studying goes, you will quickly find in medical school that the amount of time spent studying is HIGHLY variable. Some people do nothing but study, some people seem to study a lot less than would seem to be required. You will also find that the amount of time spent studying rarely correlates with a higher grade. Everyone comes into medical school with different backgrounds and levels of understanding. I will have to say that our class has been great about trying to help each other out. Just about everyday I get an e-mail from a classmate with a chart, or website that helps with whatever we are studying at the time. Hope I answered your questions. Congratulations on your acceptance!

drchris33
12-22-2002, 09:40 AM
I have to agree with BamaAlum. Everyone is different. For me, I think I studied each day about the amount of time I studied during finals week. Usually around four to five hours. Just depended on the day. One word of advice: Alot of my classmates did this in undergrad. You cannot prepare for a quiz or exam the night before. I thrived on this......I would put on a pot of coffee and then stay up and study straight through to the exam. In med school, you have such a high volume of material, it would be impossible to do that. I have pulled a few all-nighters, but I had been studying a lot during the week too.

Bama, do I know you?? I know you are in my class, I just am having trouble placing who you are?? Congrats on finishing this semester!!

Hey guys.......
All I have to say is WOW!!!! That test was so incredibly tough. I am so glad it is over. I am praying for a huge standard deviation. It seemed like 1/3 of the test was quiz bank! And then, it seemed like we had 50 questions over HIV. If my memory serves, we only had like two or three lectures on HIV. Man, I seriously walked out of there, and was nervous about passing it!

But hey, we are half way done with our first year. Congrats to everyone. And for all of you that went out the other night, it was such a good time!!! We need to get together more often (like the night before exams and just get blitzed!) Might help us on the test!!

OK, well have a great holiday and see you in two weeks. BE SURE TO READ YOUR DUBIN!!

I am practicing my lines for my career after flunking out of med school......I am torn between two.....

Hey guys,
Hope you are having a good break. Does anybody know where I can get the Slice of Life laserdisc? I already have a laserdisc player. I want to use SOL at home so I don't have to go to the library or Smith everytime I want to use it. I am thinking about going into Path so I think it will be a good investment. I can buy it online for $300, but I was hoping somebody had one they wanted to sell. No luck on E-bay.

How is the break for everyone?? I am about 1/3 through Dubin. It is a pretty good book. I am really looking forward to cardio. I think that the rest of the semester should be pretty good. Can't be any worse than skin, blood, and lymph!?

Hey DrChris and UHSers

I have been accepted at PCOM for the class of 2007, but have been reading your posts all year and you sound like a delightful group of friends and very supportive of one another. I enjoy your thread.

Was wondering with all the stress of med school, what do guys do for exercise? Is keeping in shape hard? My cousin just graduated from pharmacy school and the stress made her gain a ton of weight. What shape is the student body in right now? What kind of exercise do you guys do? I know from your posts that you are some kind of physical trainer Chris, so it probably isn't difficult for you, but what about others? Personally, I'm an avid runner and tennis player. But how much running and tennis can one do in cold Philly PA?

Keep Up The Good Work!

F/A 18--
Congrats on your acceptance!!!

As for staying in shape......it is only as difficult as you make it! I would say that over half of my class works out. Maybe not half, but a fair number of them. We don't have that many overweight people. I had gotten out of my workout routine....thinking that all I have time for is to study. But if I dont work out, my energy level is lower and I really noticed that during the last few sections.

You should make a list of a few things that are really important to you and keep those up once entering medical school. Mine were working out (which I am starting to do better with) and the other was watching ER every Thursday night. So no matter what I have the next day, I always take time to do those things.

I actually lost weight because I have to cook for myself, so I eat less than I am used to. I am not complaining about that.

Anyway, congrats again!!!

Well we are a 1/3 of the way done with cardio already. Pretty crazy! I have been spending time and making sweet academic love to my BRS Physiology book as well as Dubin and Lipp's Pharm book. I feel the section is cool, but alot of stuff gets really confusing!

I can't think of anything else exciting to talk about. I am going home this weekend, and hopefully my wife and kids will allow me to study some cause I need it!

Oh well, I haven't gotten much done today. Played hoops for about two hours though. thought I should upkick the cardio, since, by the rate I was going, would die of some sort of cardiomyopathy (Med student syndrome: not enough exercise, too many stimulants (caffeine mainly))

Well hopefully if you are in my class and are reading this, that you passed Cardio!! It was a tough section but a very interesting one. I am having a problem being motivated to study, just due to the fact that I am still in a funk......post-test study inability.......or something like that

Respiratory should be fun as well. I think it will be a little bit of a break from the rigors of cardio......I mean there are more equations and numbers to memorize, but I dont think it will be that hard conceptually.........that is unless the "penguin" will be teaching us a lot.......I think you know who I mean!

OK, back to the books! Have a great rest of the week!!!!

I cannot believe you brought the penguin into SDN. What were you thinking? This is our sanctuary, man!!!! It's like a bad day at work...leave it at the office, why don't you???? ;)

I had to MAKE myself study tonight. My god, I have nothing left!!! I can't wait for spring break, but then again, I wish I had some great plans for it. Probably go to my parents and not get off their couch for a week. That's what I did at Christmas. I was also thinking about trying to shadow Dr. Matthys for a day. He was a great teacher.

Does anyone have cool spring break plans? Need someone to carry your bags??? I know just the person!

OK, OK...I'm going to go to bed now. I'll be grumpy tomorrow because I have insomnia tonight.

Adios!

Hi anyone, everyone!

OK!

WHAT, praytell, is the DIFFERENCE between pathogenesis and virulence factors?

I say that pathogenesis---is "how the organism makes one sick".

I say that virulence factors----are those factors that contribute to its severity. (according to steadman's, under the definition for "virulence")

For our Micro lectures, with u-no-hoo....the "virulence factors" the professor gives us are more likely to be factors for pathogenesis.

M.

Tammy
03-04-2003, 08:19 PM
Mary,

Strictly speaking, I'm not exactly sure...they seem very close in definition according to Steadman.

My guess would be that pathogenesis is the accumulation of virulence factors that give an organism its ability to cause disease.

????????? Guess I hadn't really thought about it before! I also kind of connotated pathogenesis with the development and progression of the disease, which is incorrect. hhmmm...oops!

Sorry I couldn't be more help! See you tomorrow...

Hey, question for you guys...do we have direct questions from the readings or are they just supplemental to the classes? Just curious. Hi Tammy,

We definitely have direct questions from the evidence based readings. Altough, I am not sure how many questions we have per a week's reading assignment.

If you notice, some of Willsie's notes have slides titled "Evidence Based" (e.g., treatment of pneumonia). It seems to me that these slides are high yield summaries of the readings. Personally, I am just going to memorize those slides, and if I have time this weekend (which I probably won't), I may skim through the readings.

Take care,
Igor.

Sorry bro....I have no idea about any of the questions that you are asking. I am just concentrating on this year right now and not about boards, let alone the second step of boards. I am sure someone know what you are asking!

Well, Chris, to answer your question it could be any one of the following answers...I'll let you pick.

a) I am so frickin' smart that I don't need to study.
b) I am a social butterfly and just want to spread my warmth and joy around.
c) I HAVE NO ATTENTION SPAN LEFT AND CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO CRACK THE BOOKS!!!!!!

hhmmmm....what is the most logical answer? Tough choice! Do you want to poll the audience, call a friend or take 50/50? lol

OK, you've shamed me now. I'll go study. Promise! ;)

And Wolverine, I have no idea about the answers to your questions, but of course I'll try and make something up...

I do know there is an honor society at the school, but my grades suck and I have not received my invitation yet. lol (See above for explanation of "my grades suck.") Therefore I couldn't really tell you the name of it.

I think it was the COMLEX II that the first "Genesis" class took recently and they did excellent. If I remember right, it was like a 97% pass rate. It probably wouldn't do you any good to worry about what previous classes achieved on the test as we have a completely new curriculum style than those classes had, so it would be like comparing apples to oranges. But it does appear that the new style more than adequately prepares us for the boards. (By first "Genesis" class, I mean that UHS started the new method of teaching three years ago, therefore we only have one set of Comlex II scores with the new curriculum. Since you've interviewed here, I'm assuming you're familiar with the Genesis Curriculum.)

OK...there's my BS answers. Have a good night! Off to the books...

Wo1verine7DO,

Here are my answers. Please take them with a grain of salt.

Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society is mainly for allopathic students. I believe it's offered to the top 10% of the class. Osteopathic Schools (specifically UHS) have two other honor societies that take the top 15%.

At the end of each rotation you are required to take a Pass/Fail exam. Theoretically, this exam tests both the knowledge which you should have acquired during the rotation, and the material pertinent for COMLEX II.

If I find out the average passing rate for COMLEX II I'll let you know.

Igor.

Wo1verine7DO,

This is some information regarding the most recent UHS performance on COMLEX 1. (I do not have any COMLEX 2 info).

Of the total number of students (2810) taking COMLEX 1, last summer, 88.8 % passed.
Of the total number of UHS students (215) 96.3 % passed.

Of the first time takers (2696) 90.1 % passed.
Of the first time UHS takers (213) 96.7 % passed.

By the way, the two National Osteopathic Honor Societies are Sigma Sigma Phi abd Psi Sigma Alpha.

Take care,
Igor.

Thanks Igor and Tammy,
Your answered most of my questions. The main reason I was asking is cause some residencies won't even consider you if your not in one of those honor societies.

Man, I was surfing around on the allopathic site (yes I should be studying but the hell with it) and I ran across a thread about osteopathic medicine. I encourage you guys to read it. There are some real *****holes out there, basically telling people that we are just "dumb MDs that partied too much in college". There is one DO on there that keeps on defending us!!! Way to go oceandoc!

I just thought you guys might be interested in reading that. It kind of pissed me off. I did post on there, but I was discrete.

Chris,

Weren't you the one encouraging me to study??? LOL

I had to go put my two cents in. The discussion was pretty good except for those two bozos. I just hope they have to work under a competent, slave-driving DO some day to PROVE to them that MDs are not gods and DOs are not imbeciles. Can't we all just get along? ha! ha!

hhmmmm...sleep or study? sleep or study? Tough choice! I'll have to let you know how it turns out!

Boy, I'm glad to be back in a civilized forum! Didn't know just how good we have it! Seems to me we're more supportive of each other on this side and amazingly supportive of those who "are different."

Adios, muchacho!

Thanks to everyone who is answering my questions :) I had a few more. Does anyone know what grading system UHS uses is it pass/fail or letter? Also, for the comlex 1, do you know what is actual average score for UHS? The percentage is 96%, but I'm sort of inquiring about a real number like lets say 100, 200, 300, etc...what is a good comlex 1 score to get a good residency placement? Lastly, does anyone know the percentage for UHS students "first choice" residency placements?
Thanks. Wo1verine7DO

We use letter grades....A, B, C, F

As far as number of score....I dont know

First choice is about 78% I believe

Wolverine,

I don't know the answer to your scores question, but I will tell you that in all the articles I've read, your grades and comlex scores are way down the list on getting residencies. They are more concerned with your performance at clinical sites. I don't have the article anymore, but I know topping the list were work ethic and patient interaction skills. These are subjectively graded by each of your clinical directors and will be recorded in your file. This information was obtained by surveys to residency directors across the country. Grades and Comlex scores were like #7 and #13 or something crazy on the list of importance.

Hope this helps!

Natioanlly, the average COMLEX 1 score, last summer, was 518.

Does anyone use Dialup or Cable for UHS? I'm not sure if its worth the extra cost each month to have a fast connection to download stuff? I believe I'm staying at Century Towers, but not 100% sure.
Does anyone rent anywhere else thats pretty close to the school, but with cable included and utilities?
Also, Do you know if UHS students rotate in hospitals with residents and interns? OR are most of them community hospitals?
Thanks,
Anthony

DrIgor
03-11-2003, 09:10 PM
Hello Wolverine,

Century Towers has a "library" with several computers with a DSL connection. Additionally, UHS a number of DSL computers around campus. I practically never use the computers at home and restrict most of my computer use to those on campus (free printer use is also a plus). So, I personally don't have a need for a dsl connection, and just use dial-up.

As far as I know, UHS students rotate practically everywhere and with everyone. I think we have a rotating partnership in 35 or so states (don't quote me on the number). It mainly depends on where you go. If it's a small rural hospital, then the rotation possibilities will be limited.

Chris lives close to campus and pays cheaper rent than that of CT. He'll probably answer that question better.

Later,
Igor.

Hello Everyone.

I just wanted to remind those of you who really like to press the delete button on your email w/o reading all the messages :) about the Federal PLI reform scheduled to vote on Thursday. (you should have receive an email about this in your UHS account).

The Bill is necessary and vital for the state of health care as a whole, and for the medical profession. I urge you to send an email to your state rep, asking him/her to vote "yes" on it. Just go to <www.congress.org>, then type in your zip code in the "write to your official" section, and the program will take you through the necessary steps. Your official is there to represent your opinion. So, let him know what you think.

The Bill is called H.R. 5, the HEALTH (Help Efficient Accessible, Low-Cost, Timely Health Care) Act of 2003. Some of its main points are:

1. It places caps on non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering ($250,000). Pereviously there was no cap.

2. The damages are allocated among the different parties, in proportion to each person's responsibilities.

3. It limits the number of years a plaintiff has to file a medical liability law suit.

There are several more points to the reform (dealing with attorney fees and the specifics of damage payments), but I think the ones above are the most important.

Take care,
Igor.

I totally agree with Igor on this bill. The malpractice liability situation is ridiculous. However, I am afraid that the Democratic trial lawyers are going to chew this bill up in committee. By the time it emerges it may have no resemblance to the original bill and will probably be useless. Who knows? The AMA is pushing this bill hard and heavy(as they should). They have a powerful lobby so maybe they can push a descent version through. My Senators and Reps. are on record supporting the bill, but I am from a Republican state so that is to be expected. I hope it makes it through. I don't want to pay a billion dollars for malpractice insurance.

Hey Iggy,

There is a great Irish bar (and restaurant) that is tons of fun. I'll have to find out the name of it for you. You take the last exit off I-44 and it's just a couple of blocks...I'll try to find out tonight and tell you in class tomorrow. It's real close to the Budweiser plant.

Lots 'o chicks for ya'...ha! ha! (And I'm sure it would be a BLAST on St. Paddy's Day if you're there Monday.)

See you tomorrow.

Hey Guys,

I need some advice. I joined the ranks of the class of 2007 three months ago. Right now I'm in the process of finding an apartment in Kansas City. I called Relocation Central and they suggested Falcon Point. Do any of you have any experience with this apartment complex? Are there any other relocation companies I could call? Are there any other apartments that are reasonably priced but are in a safe neighborhood?

All advice is appreciated.

Samham

Tammy

Hey Samham,

There is some discussion about this on the UHS 2007 thread. I live in Parkville, MO, which is about 15 miles from the school. Rent is pretty reasonable here, but some distance from school.

I don't think anyone who lives in Century Towers has had a problem with the neighborhood, although as you saw it's not a great one.

Seems like the Missouri side is more reasonable than the Kansas side, but I could be wrong.

Try going to www.forrent.com and searching for apartments there. You can type in what you want in an apartment and it will bring up those that fit your needs. That's how I found my apartment. I have a two-bedroom with washer/dryer hook-ups for $570/mo. There is also a pool, work-out room, laundry facilities, playground and sand volleyball court here. I like it. It's River Oaks. You can also have large pets here and the school district is great for my son.

Good luck! Let us know if we can help you more!

The rest of this message is to those in the 1st year class. I haven't yet sent out an email to the class about this, but Nathan Roesner is the winner of the "Best OPP TA" contest. I just wanted to share this info with you since I am happy that he won. We are giving him a gift cerificate and an award certificate (maybe signed by Pres. Pletz). I hope you're all relaxing this weekend before the home stretch-- can you believe the year is almost over!!! Although it's definitely been a long, strange trip (ask those "free-basing" pharmacologists about that one, then lick an ashtray), I can't help but feel like we were just introducing ourselves the other day-- 2007ers, you'll understand all too soon.

Well, enjoy your weekend, see y'all Monday for the next installment of "How the Colon Turns"...

Man, can you believe that in 6 weeks we will be free from our study rooms and smelly scrubs for like three months???? I cannot wait!! It just seems weird that we only have 5 weeks to go until school is out......seems like FOM started only 5.9 years ago!

What are you guys doing for the summer??? I am sure most of you know what I am doing, but for those browsers of our thread I will elaborate.......

I am going to spend one month in Medicine Lodge, KS (kind of appropriate name, eh?) doing a rotation with a Family Practice Doc. From the sound of it, the first day we show up, we are thrown in. We perform all the H &Ps on every patient, plus are on call and have ER coverage. We are first to contact the patient, so I know we will learn so much this summer. According to the doc in charge, we will have the experience of a fourth year once we leave. We will be learning suturing, casting, joint injections, etc. I am really excited to be given the opportunity to do so.

After that, I have been hired by a Medical Temp agency to work in a clinic with a physician. I dont know what I will be doing yet, but I am sure it will be great too. And after that, I will be a Neuro slave for 10 weeks upon beginning my MSII career!

OK well enough procrastinating......back to the anal triangle......hey I think I found Jimmy Haffa!!

Yeah I heard about it through a second year. I then emailed the doc and set it up with him. Also though, the school has lists of available internships for the summer. The maximum you can do is 8 weeks, that you will get credit for.

M--
I do not think they take a part of your pay. I think you get over $10/hr, so I am game. They didnt tell me that, nor did I see it on my paperwork I signed. I have the info if you want it.

I don't think I have felt this overwhelmed for quite a while, as far as having a hard time understanding the material. I took the JITT quiz, man got my butt kicked. Obviously I am going to have to get it on hardcore this weekend with some histo action for foreplay and then smack it to Netter and Moore (Embryo).

Hi Anks,

Hey everybody,
I was just wondering how everyone feels about this Viola Frymann lady who is coming to speak. I am kind of upset about it. I read the 2 disciplinary actions that were taken against her and it is pretty scary. I think that her views on craniosacral therapy are very extreme and highly controversial. Anyway, I know a lot of people think she's great, but after reading the complaints lodged against her(recently, not early in her career) and listening to Erf I don't think she should have been invited to speak. Just my 2 cents.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Dr. Fryman has to say. I know that the disc. actions were posted...I haven't heard what Erf said. I didn't read the disc. actions in detail; I figured knowing that they happened is the bottom line.

Anyway, I'd like to learn more about c/s therapy. I first read about it in Dr. Fulford's book "Touch of Life". I think at this point in my career I don't have much to say about things like this due to my severe ignorance, being a 1st year and all.

I'll listen. If what she says seems sensible, then I will incorporate it into my knowledge. If not, then I won't.

Ciao!

Here's a comment about Dr. Fryman.

Based on the info I've heard, we should be extremely skeptical of what she tells us. However, her mistake does not mean that she doesn't have anything of value to teach us.

I don't think there is anything wrong with her being invited to speak at UHS. She is an expert at a certain field and therefore is qualified to share her knowledge.

Personally, I would like to hear what she has to say, simply because craniosacral is a highly controversial topic and I am highly ignorant of it ;). I guess I'll just have to turn on my BS detector and see what happens.

uhs07--
Well it is kind of tough to do so, since our schedule is so different from day to day. But I will walk through a breakdown....

Lecture is M-F from 8-12. Every Monday afternoon, you will have OPP lab, generally for two hours. Also for one hour on Monday, is usually pathology lab.
Tuesday is usually anatomy lab for about 4 hours, but you dont have anatomy lab all the time either. You are divided up into four groups, based on your last name (A-D groups). Then two of the four groups (ie C and D) will be in lab. The other two groups will come down for an hour, generally after the lab is over, to review what the other group did.

Wednesday is usually an off day, as far as the afternoons. Thursday afternoon is usually Intro to Clinical Medicine (ICM) where you learn to do physical exams on the system you are studying (cardio exam during cardiovascular).
Friday is usually done by noon as well

Like I said, each section is different as well as each week. At the beginning of each section, you are handed a syllabus for the entire six weeks, telling you exactly where you need to be at any given time.

If you have more questions, or anything don't hesitate to post or email (cmorrissey@uhs.edu)

Hope that helps

Chris

Thanks Dr Chris. I really appreciate the help. I was scared about being in class from 8 to 5 everyday. I think the schedule is not that bad.

You have helped to ease my fear. I had a very nice interview experience at UHS last year and was accepted two day later. So, I had to turn down interview offers from PCOM, NYCOM, and another school. I also withdrew my application from KCOM and DMU. I hope that I have made the right choice.

See you in Kansas City in 3 and 1/2 months. Thanks for your help

Hi Everybody, first I'd just like to say thanks to all of you that have posted on the 2007 board as the advice has been very helpful. In other news I am looking for a roomate. I also posted this on the 2007 board . . .
_____________________________________

I am looking for a roomate to share a house with me. Possibly Two roomates. I will be purchasing a house this month very close to UHS. The house that I am currently trying to buy is only 8 minutes from the school. It is a nice house in a good quiet niehborhood. I'm not sure exactly on the rent but it should be between 350-400 month. If I get this house, I will post pictures soon!!! I'm very excited about it.

As far as me, I'm a single guy 26 years old. I'm a good roomate, very clean, easy to get along with, and I enjoy working out, gardening, cooking and computers and I am very studious. I really feel this will be a great deal for anyone who is unsure about where they want to live or even for the person who needs a change. I plan to setup the house to be very user freindly with regard to studying, wi-fi internet connection throught (wireless highspeed), and new paint and carpeting. For more details feel free to PM me, or give me a call. I would love to talk to anybody (male/female/MS1/MS2/ETC) that is interested. As I crunch my budget, I do believe this will be slightly cheaper than any apartment I have seen with much more space and privacy.

What up--
I think a lot of people would be disappointed if I didn't give an update on my rotation (esp Kevin!).
Man it is so great down here. The entire staff is so nice. I have been seeing patients alone since the first day. It is incredible. I watched a bone marrow biopsy first thing Monday morning. I have performed local anesthetic and removed a few actinic keratoses and an acanthoma. I have been pimped constantly since I have been here. I have been doing ok, but alot of "I don't knows"

I make rounds in the morning on patients (which have been like two) and have begun to make SOAP notes. I still don't know a darn thing, but at least I am getting clinical exposure. Last night in the ER, a guy came in with an "asthma attack" but also very drunk. He was very combative and restrained on the gurney. Pretty cool. He was released to the cops; not very happy with them :)

Well that is all for now. I am on call all next week, beginning on Memorial Day so I am sure it will be exciting!!!!

Later y'all

Hey, congrats on healing so nicely, Kev!

Chris, your rotation sounds awesome! You make me want to do one this summer...but I'd be terrified about being pimped. Don't feel like I know enough to be able to handle the questions. I'd probably cry! LOL

My rotation is in Medicine Lodge, Kansas.

Being pimped really isn't that bad because they really don't expect me to know much. I have surprised myself a little, but for the most part, still feel stupid. I am really having a good time though. I am getting ready to go up to the hospital and do my first full H & P on a new admit, so this should be interesting.

Talk to you all later....have a great and safe weekend!

Hi Chris,

Good to hear you're doing well. Don't forget that EVERY PATIENT with abdominal pain should have a rectal exam!!

I'll be doing a 2 week ER rotation here in Cleveland starting June 2. I'm nervous, very nervous.

My time away from school thus far has been hugely unproductive...I spent the majority of yesterday trying to download new software for my palm pilot, to no avail. We have old fashioned dialup here at home, so I kept getting disconnected. I got a "free 1000 hours" on earthlink disc and so I'm trying that. Been online almost 2 hours now, no interruption.

Well, I miss everyone alot so far! Hey, is Desiree working with ya?! Tell her I said hi and to write me!!!

Hi Tammy! I miss ya! Hi everybody else!

Oh yeah, and I'm still unemployed and feel like a fish out of water. I should probably relax and enjoy.

We're going "camping" this w/e, staying in some Kamping Kabins. In Pennsylvania, near the Allegheny Nat'l Forest. Fun times ahead:hardy: :horns:

Ciao, ya'll

It's ME! DESIREE!!!! I'm invading Chris Christopherson's screen name in an attempt to frame him for the murder of Abdul Kareem-Abu-jabar.

Things are good here in Medicine Lodge, KansASS. We get to do a lot, and I had the great pleasure of watching a colonscopy, a Denver shunt placement, and got to scrub in on a lap chole (I found out I wear a size 6 glove in the OR....news to me....I responded with, "medium, please!")!! Retarded med student here.

I'm working with Dr. Bliss here and he's really good..he actually knows Dr. Oeklaus and used to work out with him!

What else....BAMA -- "Bama was like, Desiree, I miss you more than you know" and I was like, "yeah whateva!"

Miss you guys...but Chris and I bought a football today to throw around..we ARE the party here in ML.

I went to the internet and Desiree was like "Ehhhh...", yeah Whateva' !!

Sounds like Chris and Desiree are having too much fun. I just spent the week in my uncle's pathology lab. I saw some cool stuff. I helped diagnose a multiple myeloma and I even had an explanation for a weird immunohistochemical finding in the plasma cell(confirmed by a consult with a Vanderbilt hematopathologist). We had a 15 lb. ovarian cyst come in yesterday. It was huge! I saw tons of gallbladders and uteri. I was able to diagnose a couple of colon adenocarcinomas. I saw a leiomyosarcoma of the uterus. Of course there were hundreds of skin biopsies that came in. Being pimped sucks! I felt like an idiot sometimes. Hope everyone is having a great summer!

Tammy, I am guessing the pool will win out on you, but we will see.

Kevin, hopefully the golfus deltus deformitus will go away by the time Neuro rolls around.

Bama--sounds like you have had an awesome week! I guess path is worth learning huh?? By the way, do you know who sings the "Whateva song? We were talking about that last night, and couldn't come up with a solution.

Mary, hopefully your ER rotation will be fulfilling! I am sure you will see a lot of cool stuff.

As for me, I am having a great time. Today I did my first dictation; updating a H & P of a guy who went from acute to swing bed. I think I sounded like a phone sex worker, cause it is in a Dict-a-phone. I was talking all quiet and sexy like..... I guess if med school and rodeo clown school don't pan out, I will be able to have a job in the phone sex industry.

Man, it is really rough because they all use trade names on all the drugs, and most of the time I have no clue what they are talking about. I would definitely read up on diabetes if anyone is going to do a rural rotation, cause you see a lot of it.

OK, I am going to make some PB &J and chill out. One of the docs are taking us out to steak dinner tonight, so I guess we scored on that one! BOO-YAH!!!!!!!

Surgery definetly moved up on my list after that!

I just got my computer and ordered it without a floppy drive? I was wondering how often you need a floppy disk at UHS with a laptop since I was thinking of buying one? Or should I just get a ZIP DRIVE with 100 MB capability (Is that what is on UHS computers? since there is a 250 MB version and 750MB, but the 100 MB Drives only read 100MB disks). I also have a CD-RW burner on my cpu. If someone from the class of 2006 could enlighten me on how one can download from that UHS blackboard all the notes. The cpu specifications said I needed a floppy drive, but they are going to be phased out in the next 6 months, it listed the Zip Drive but not a specific (100, 250, or 750 version), and a CDRW discs.
Thanks,
Anthony

Hey guys--
Man I sure have figured out what it feels like to be a doctor this week. Every night this week except for one I have been called to the ER between 130am and 300am for some of the dumbest stuff. One 16 year old kid had less than a paper cut at 2am, but claimed that is gushed blood before he came in.

I am really tired........got a wake up call at 645 am this morning for someone who has had a migraine for the past three days!!!!!!!! Unbelievable

Other than that, I am having a good time. Learning lots.....giving local anesthetic, burning off keratin horns, injecting knees, suturing. It is a great experience.

Only two more days of call and then it is up to Des for a week!!!! She had better get some stuff in the middle of the night like I have!!!!

Ok, enough griping for now.......talk to you all later!!

Hey...

Well it's gonna be a long two weeks!! I'm j/k. The people at the ER are very nice. There's a few who I could easily do without, but hey, whatya gonna do.

I follow the residents. They are really cool about teaching/pimping.

--(on XRay) Which one is the lateral malleolus?
--What size sutures do you use for the face?
--What are the cranial nerves?
--what do you do after subclavian line placement?
--Is that small bowel or large bowel on the xray?

So, not too bad. I think today is going to be very busy. There is only one resident on, and probably 2 attendings and me. Yesterday there were 4 or 5 residents. I'm scared.

Ciao!

Mary--
Sounds like you are going to have a cool experience. I wish you the best of luck and keep posting so we know how it is going for you.

Today I got to inject cortisone into a knee.....I think I have done four of those now. Also, am becoming an expert on ingrown toe nails!!!!

I am getting tired of doing H & Ps!! I know it is not good to be tired of it already, but it does get boring. I did three of them last night.

Des is becoming the Pap Queen!! I think she has done like four or five of them. I haven't done any.....still waiting for Ms. Right?!

Well we have one week left.....I have five nights/days of call next week and we are out of here next Friday! It has been great. Learned a lot about medicine.......learned some things I will remember for a long time......learned some things i will punt as soon as I leave here. That is the name of the game

So if anyone has an ingrown toe nail or needs a knee injection, I am your man! If anyone needs a pap, give Des a buzz!!!

Peace out from the M to the L!

Hi guys,

Today I ended my rotation early...there just was not a lot for me to do as a first year in the ER. I got to see a lot, but otherwise I was kind of paralyzed.

At least 3 different residents asked me 3 different times "why was I there?" . They couldn't comprehend why a 1st year would want to spend their summer off in a hosptal. It was rather awkward for me. :(

So I made the executive decision. The doctor who was "in charge of me" really wasn't around at all....I guess if I would have been just with him this would have been OK. But the staff in the ER didn't understand why I was there, and overall I could tell that they really didn't want me there, although they never said that specifically. They just said "go enjoy your summer".

So that's that. I DO like ER though. It may be what I go into.

BTW, I'm quitting my "job", too. It's not really worth my time! The doctor is an ultra-conservative person who I can see already is really really hard on her office staff. She doesen't have any nurses, she just has us "assistants". But yesterday was my first day, and I think my last! For many reasons that I won't list here, it's not worth my time.

OK well, I'm gonna go lay around and do nothing now!!!!!!!

Hope you're all doing well!

What up y'all......
First off, good luck to EurodocMom going to Texas. Have fun with that one. Actually repelling would be cool.

Well I have like two days left in my internship. It has been great. I wish it would last a little longer. I am beginning to feel a little comfortable in making a few diagnosis. I have injected more knees, taken off more ingrown toenails.

Today, a guy came with a chief complaint of intermittent pain around his left inferior scapular angle. My physician wanted me to do OMT. So I did soft tissue. Then I did Texas Twist......holy crap, I popped that guy so good, but he yelled out and was in some sort of a spasm. So he sat up, gathered himself and then the doc asked him to move his shoulder around. It felt better and he could move it a lot more. I thought I killed the guy!!! Freaked me out.....but hey, this stuff works!!!!!!

Well I am praying to the ER gods that I won't get woken up in the middle of the night again tonight. Only a few more nights on call!!

MJ, you're missin out on the Army path! We were briefed by a resident and/or program dirrector on every specialty and the path sounded pretty cool (not to me of course). Did I make you jealous yet?
Tomorrow we practice putting on our gas masks , oh what fun!!

Hey guys--
Haven't posted for a while. I have decided not to work. I am going to do a Quintiles study, from the beginning of July (July 16th-24th, and then from July 29th-Aug 9th), paying $3200!! I figured it will be more than I would make working, so that is what I decided to do. I am spending the time with my family in the huge metropolis of Clyde, KS.

I did a crap load of work yesterday.....mowed the lawn, put a trampoline together, ran and shot hoops!!!! I was pretty tired today!

Anyway, I have started studying a bit for neuro....heard through the grapevine that we have to learn the bones of the skull on our own, since we have so much to cover during the year. So I am not taking any chances!

The ODB makes an appearance! Dave, the pathology on the back nine is pretty weak just a couple of basal cell carcinomas and the such. We did have a couple of interesting cases come into the lab this week, though. We had a 43 year old guy with adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas with liver mets. The histopath showed perineural and angiolymphatic invasion. He elected to have his spleen and the tail of his pancreas removed. I don't think I would have. He is in ICU now with a bad post-op infection. The chances of him surviving very long are slim to none. We also had a 53 year old with diffuse large cell lymphoma. Couldn't tell much on the histo except that his nodes were packed with neoplastic lymphocytes. We had to wait until the flow cytometry came back to see that he had an aggressive T cell lymphoma. Other than that just doing a little phlebotomy, playing a little golf and bugging the pathologists around here to death. (Stupid med student!) I am still hoping to get in a couple of autopsy this summer. Have fun in banker doctor class, learning how to calculate the GDP of Malta. :)

Hey everybodee--
Man it is great to see you all postin' like crazy on here. I was feeling like a loser since I was the only one who seemed to be on here, especially around exam time!!!

Glad to hear everyone is having a good summer. Man it is July already!! Can't believe it. One month from now and we will be hating our lives again!! :)

Bama, keep the path alive......so to speak! Laurel keep em shiny....Dave keep Dancin'!

And as for you Des.....well I won't share any of our dirty secrets from our month together!! Ha, ha, ha! I still have dirt on you, you know.

I am gettin pretty bored. Love playing with the kids......hate not having a gym to go to. Tore my soleus again, so I am limping around like a punk a$% once again. Hopefully it will heal up in a few days enough to get to shootin hoops again. I have watched Tele-Tubbies, Scooby Doo and Harry Potter so much that I have nightmares about the Teles being Doctors and all that. I have each episode memorized!! Sucks but I am having fun with the kiddos.

Well I guess nothing else exciting here to report. I am curious, those of you that took the Forensic Path course, what was your final mark on the transcript for that??? I got an S--not sure if it stands for sucks or what.

Chris --
I can't remember what letter I got for the forensic course; I like to immediately throw away any item with words such as "class rank" and "evaluation."
I'm going to the pool today! Woo hoo! Haven't had a weekday off in forever, so I'm going to enjoy it as much as possible. I'm going to look like a lobster, I'm sure but I'll be a happy one.
Recent developments have occurred as of late, people. Listen up. Listen to the words that I say: I bought a teacup poodle this week! Ha! Chris, I told you I was SO getting one. He's white and will get up to 4 pounds. Tiny guy! I'm in love with him, as all of you will be when I bring him to class in a stylish little bag. How fun is THAT?!!
Well I'm off to run a bit before heading to the pool. Don't want to scare away all the small children.
Talk to you lata!

I can't believe we have let our thread fall this far down the list. Where's Chris? He usually keeps us near the top. Don't worry Chris, I got your back.
I am going to meet the world-renown orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews Wednesday at *********** headquarters in Birmingham. My mom has an appointment with him for a knee replacement consult. I'm pumped! He's the best in the world. I am hoping there will be some cool athletes in the waiting room. I know this time last year Allen Iverson came down to see him. Barry Zito was in town a couple of weeks ago for an appointment. Maybe MJ (the original, not me) will turn his ankle this weekend playing some pick-up games. :) I am sure some pro or college athletes will be there. I'll let everybody know how it goes. I'll holla'....

Sorry everyone for letting the thread plummet! Thanks Bama for getting my back. I have still be in Clyde with the fam and we have no internet. The library is my only source and it is only open a few days a week. Today I am in KC; had to get a repeat EKG for my study at Quintiles. My first one had inverted P waves on leads II and III. I thought that was kind of weird but the doc that did my physical said it was a normal variant. I also have to get my mail and go to a meeting at the school. So currently I am in my apt catching up on email and the like.

I have seen a pic of Des's dog. I have a feeling we are all in for an extra exciting year, with Des toting around her spawn, probably will have sweaters and everything, so if it gets loose in the neighborhood, it will get its butt kicked!!!

OK, well better go eat, work out and then go to my stuff. Talk at you all lata!!

Well nothing much new and exciting here. I had a repeat EKG for my Quintiles study, and found out that I can be in the study. So I was relieved then, cause if I didn't get in, then I would be screwed for money.

Other than that, I will be studying a crap load during my study, since it sounds like we are in prison.....have to stay in bed pretty much the whole time.....fun fun!!!

Well just giving a shout out to all the homies in Class of 2006! Holla back!

Hey everybody! What's goin on...Not much down here in Haysville, Kansass.
Glad you've been okayed to do the research study, Chris Christopherson. I'll have to drop in to say hi when I come in on the 23rd for my follow-up appt. Will you still be there?
AHHHH! I get my baby doggie tomorrow and I can't wait. I'm down to two names; his personality will determine which one I'll give him: Steiner or Maximus. Hmmm.....it's a difficult decision here, people. Steiner is the name of my favorite wrestler on WWE - Scott Steiner, formerly known as Big Poppa Pump, formerly half of the infamous duo The Steiner Brothers along with his brother the Dog Faced Gremlin. On the other hand, Maximus is cute, too. I just don't know; I'm struggling here.
Any input? Ahem, I should say, any POSITIVE input? That was directed to you, Bama and Chris. No teasing about my gay dog with the pink rhinestone collar. I love my gay dog.

Don't have much else to talk about. Been really hot here, big shocker! I have been cleaning all day with the wife.....we got rid of the older two for a week, so I got to sort through their underwear today and get rid of the ones that don't fit anymore......I wouldn't rather be doing anything else!!

MISS MARY!! No, actually I didn't get your email. I was wondering how you were doing, though so I'm so glad you posted. As sad as it is, I didn't end up getting the dog. I had it paid for and everything, then when I saw it I knew I couldn't keep it. It looked nothing like the picture and was much bigger than she told me it would be. I just decided that was way too much money to pay for something I didn't want. So I called the breeder -- she was pissed -- and I drove the dog back to Nebraska the next day. I'm glad I did it though, because when I got there she had about 20 dogs running around her kitchen (icky) and not one of them was a teacup poodle, they were all toy poodles (which are a few pounds larger). So I was relieved I did the right thing.
Moral of the Story: Don't buy a freakin dog off the internet!!

Hey guys--
I just got out of Quintiles this morning!!!! Damn it feels good to be out. I have five days off then back in again for another 13 days. The first period was cake. I got Coumadin on the first day and that was it. Got blood drawn about 8 times that day but then the next day I just got drawn twice and then every day after that it was once a day. So I sat around and watched movies, played Monopoly, Dominos, and played some hard core football on Playstation.

So I am heading back to Clyde today and then will be back here on Monday some time.

Russell, it is a pretty formal thing so I would tell her to wear a nice dress. You will be wearing a suit to it. Think interview attire and you will be safe.

Well I am going to go work out since I havent for like three weeks. It is killiing me.l

Hello Chris and everyone,
I had a question, what kind of attire does one wear on the first day of orientation. The letter says thats when class picture will be taken, is it orientation dress (aka. suit and tie) or just casual dress (white shirt, tie)? I'm a little confused about it.
Thanks,

Anthony,

Does it say anywhere in that packet what you're supposed to wear?

I wish that they'd get it together with this...they love to enforce the dress code, but they are far less than succinct wtih details and then they get pi$$ed when people don't follow the rules!

Anyway,
I think most people last year wore dress slacks and shirts with ties...with or without suit jacket...they can't say anything to you if you dress nice, like you did for your interview.

sorry about any confusion!

I just got back from a week in beautiful Orange Beach, Alabama. I had a blast. Saw a few dolphin, almost got devoured by jellyfish, pretty standard really. I got to eat at Jimmy Buffett's sister's restaurant. Jimmy wasn't there (bummer). They say he stops in for lunch sometimes.
Sallie Mae sent me a letter and told me how much interest I have accrued on my loans already. I almost stepped in front of a bus. Does anybody know where I can sell organs? I have 2 kidneys, who really needs 2? I know that there is a black market for them, although I can't tell you the definition of black markets. Healthcare Policy lectures = nap time.

Okay, I lied about that last one, but the fact remains. Oh well, one more year and then we get to try some real medicine. Where does everyone want to do their rotations? Also, I just had one final question, do I really need to buy all those medical instuments, I have a stethoscope already, but I'm not sure if its worth paying the bookstore a ton of money for all the other instuments unless I really need them for class?

Sorry I haven't posted in like forever...the Quin Pen has a family filter on the net and for some weird reason, SDN was filtered. I guess it is due to the porn pics of Des! So that is the reason for my absence. I appreciate MJ for keeping the testosterone levels high on here!! Thanks buddy!

For OPP lab I would just wear a T-Shirt and shorts. As for anatomy lab, you can do one of two things. You can get a pair of scrubs to designate for anatomy scrubs and keep them in your locker or you can just wear whatever you wear to class to anatomy. I do the latter. Micro is the same, but you only have like four or so micro labs

And yes that was me directing you all last night!!!

To Chris and the MS 2,
I was just wondering, in the green syllabus they give readings, do you think its wise of me to read those, or only refer to them if I don't understand the lecture....it seems like reading is taking up most of my time instead of reviewing notes or summarizing notes...also as first years , how did you guys make the transition, I feel like I'm not doing anything right? Also, I tried summarizing every lecture and that is also time consuming, does anyone recommend a better way to remember everything for the quiz and exams...it seems a little overwhelming...sorry to bog you done with questions like this since you are busy with neurological section, but I feel confused right now...I tried studying a little with some people and it seems like their level of understanding is higher than mine....I can remember main ideas, but not the detail or some of my other study partners? Anyone have any suggestions, usually, it takes a lot of time for me to understand concepts...I'm trying to find an efficient way to remember all the details...
Thanks,

Anthony,
First, as far as studying goes do what works for you...if you like to study alone I would study alone. I can tell you from my prospective I much rather study alone. The "suggested reading" in the textbooks is just that suggested reading. I feel that the lecture notes are enough...although the readings are good as far as supplementing material you do not understand. As far as reworking your notes, I am not a big fan of that because you invest a lot of time rewriting notes not knowing them. I highly recommend prereading the next day's notes the night before...do not ponder over the notes but skim them to get major details which makes the lecture a lot easier to follow. Don Weaver also puts on some workshops early on which you may want to get pointers or set up an appointment with Don one on one. Sorry this is so long but if you have questions do not hesitate to email me at dernst@uhs.edu.

Anthony,
I agree with Disco Dave on this one -- study the way that works best for you. When I started last year, I honestly didn't know whether I would do better in groups or alone. I found out that I got really frustrated and felt stupid when I studied in groups because I always felt like I didn't know as much as everyone else. I ended up studying alone and "actively learning" my notes -- I highlighted things while I was reading, I jotted a note down every now and then, anything to keep my attention. Once I feel like I know the lecture well enough to talk through it out loud, I usually study with Chris and we quiz each other over the lecture. I wouldn't recommend rewriting the notes - it's too time consuming and you're just copying words down. Board review books are good to use if it's something you just really have no idea about. I went to Don Weaver's workshops last year and found them really helpful. He says it takes three repetitions to get something into long term memory, #1 is prereading the night before for like 15 min., #2 is the lecture itself, and #3 is going through it that night. Sorry so long, hope it helps!

Anthony--
I third what Des and the Inferno said. I took me the entire first semester to really figure out what worked best for me. I would try different things until I really found what I liked to do.
I am a flash card guy.....so I made a lot of flash cards on things i thought were really important. Plus it allowed me to study when I drive three hours every other weekend to see my wife and kids.
My suggestion is to try to get through the lectures each day. if there is something you don't understand, look them up in a textbook or on the net. Then during the weekend, try to review the weeks material a few times. For me, I usually spend about 4-5 hours a night studying, since I go home every other weekend....my kiddos dont let me study.....neither does my wife

Around final exam time, I would go through the board review book entitled Step Up....it is a systems based approach like our cirriculum. I would go through the notes about two times, then go through step up a few times and I did decent. I am not an A student.....Bs in medical school are ok (took me a while to accept that)
I also have a few BRS books (Board Review Series). Physiology is awesome. I used it alot.

Just do what works best. Find a few people you can study with before quizzes by asking each other questions, going over the notes, etc.

Hope that helps.....let me know if you need anything

ODB -- I KNOW your'e not referring to the cheerleading skirt comment....for once I'm at a loss for words!! However, I am much obliged to discuss the Steiner Recliner, DDP, or any other wrestling move that anyone except NASH does. Hey...how about them Dudley Brothers -- you can't tell me they've don't have major potential....
