I wonder how long they changed the name from UHS to KCUMB, I was bored this summer since I'm off of my preceptorship for the day...and I found this. I bet they changed the name already last year...weird...that was Nov. 2003 and they had that name change for the school.

Wow that is crazy! So I guess our name has been changed for quite some time now.

Well hope boards studying is going well for you all. I have been told by a fellow SDNer, that I will score the lowest in my class. So I guess I can just quit studying. It was very nice of him. You can view his post under USMLE/COMLEX I-III, Last year's comlex questions if you would like. He seems like such a smart and nice individual.

Anyway, I guess off to the beach..........

Don't worry Chris. I posted a reply to that idiot's post. I hope he says something back. I love verbal jousting with unarmed combatants. Board studying has me so pissed I would love a good fight right about now. How's someone from LECOM gonna talk smack about Boards?? That's like ODB talking smack when he scored that touchdown. J/K ODB :)

What did this clown from LECOM say? And by the way, I scored TWO touchdowns this year. If you want a good fight, Bama, you know where I live...it's a slow walk back to the ninth floor.

ODB,
Don't let yo' mouf' writes checks yo' butt can't cash. I forgot about that 2nd touchdown. Get back to studying that Sarcoidosis, boy! I took the night off to watch my Lakers DESTROY the Timberwolves. Shaq-Daddy rang em' up for 27 and 18. You can't stop the Diesel! He's from the SEC. Nuff said.

11 days until me and the USMLE Get-It-On, Woo-EE!! Your gonna die clown!!(USMLE).......ok,ok studying for Boards for 10 hours a day has made me a little crazy. I have mentally turned the USMLE into a person who is my mortal enemy. On the June the 2nd we will fight to the death and the streets of Montgomery, AL will run red with the USMLE's blood. I know that I have a psychiatric condition, but I don't know which one because I haven't study BS yet. :)

What's wrong with you people? I get on SDN to see what's happening with my peeps and I have to scroll to find our page at the bottom of page 2. Come on, get in the game!! You act like we have a test coming up or something......I survived USMLE Step 1 yesterday. I felt okay about it. The only thing I wish I'd spent more time on was anatomy. I had about 25 total I would guess. Most of them were pretty easy but I missed some stupid ones because I pretty much punted anatomy. At least 2 or 3 brachial plexus questions. The neuro was pretty basic even though I tanked on a couple. The one MRI I had sucked really bad and I even had an EM! Hopefully the anatomy won't hurt me too badly. There were a lot of graphs which tend to give me migraines, but I guess I survived it. First Aid is money for pharm. Know that mug like the back of your hand and you will rock on the pharm questions. BRS Path is also money. Biochem was pretty straightforward, Kaplan Biochem was awesome for that stuff. Genetics probably kicked my butt.

I finally got to ride my Waverunner today. Me and my nephews took it down to the river and opened it up. I got it up to 58 mph, but that was with a nephew on the back. If I was on it by myself I'm sure I could have hit 60-65. It is pretty sweet though. I don't think the dudes who were in the B.A.S.S. fishing tournament liked me buzzing around while they were trying to fish, but oh well they'll get over it. :) I mean come on, they are freaking professional bass fishermen. Well, guess I better go pack for my return to KC tomorrow. Holla'.

Glad to hear you survived the big dude. I realize I haven't been doing my part in keeping us on the page. I apologize 'bout that. Just figured no one was on and I would be the only one posting so I just said 'whateva.

Thanks JP for the good luck. After taking the USMLE today I'll need all the luck I can get! Now I know why our allopathic counterparts call it the USMILE because its pretty rough. Now I know why Wash U is ranked the number one med school in the country. When I see one of their students I guess i'll have to bow to them and exclaim I'm not worthy. I didn't want that residency at Barnes anyway.

ODB,
The Gulf was awesome! We got up at 4 and we were catching bait fish by 6. We went about 50 miles out in the Gulf. We were on the water for 12 hours, but I could have stayed longer. They had to drag me to the car Friday night because I didn't want to leave. I will show you what I caught tomorrow. Let's just say that you won't see anything like it in Missouri.

I am so glad to be done with COMLEX and USMLE. Now we have to sit back and wait for the good news (eternal optimist). Does anyone know when we are supposed to get our rotation schedules. I would like to know what my life is going to be like for the next year. I mean besides kickin' by the beach and chillin' in the Gulf. :)

1. Have you tried to cut down on your drinking?
2. Do you get annoyed when people ask you about your drinking?
3. Do you feel guilty when you drink?
4. Do you need an 'eye-opener' to get going in the morning?

Your persistent nose-licking may be the first signs of hepatic encephalopathy. You do seem to have some degree of asterixis as well as some cognitive clouding indicative of alcoholic cirrhosis. How 'bout laying off the gin and tonics for a whle you big Lush.

So sorry Dr. Chris is not available.
Look - I don't think I'm supposed to be divulging this information across the web, but I can't go on pretending like I don't know Chris's whereabouts and the reason for them. The truth is, Chris hasn't been on SDN for some time now due to his recovering from a recent surgery. I know what you all are thinking: "Oh, no biggie, it must be that vasectomy procedure he's been eager to do for months." On the contrary, my friends. Quite the contrary.
Chris is beginning the synthetic change of becoming a woman and he is in the first stages. This week he underwent bilateral breast implants but has been taking horse estrogen for quite some time.
I'm sure he'll still be the Chris we know and love, and will be able to answer any neuro questions when he is feeling up to it.

Who's doing your gender reassignment work? Is it the same guy who did Des' work. She used to be a pretty big dude. It was amazing work. Now she only has to worry about shaving a couple times a day and having her back waxed once a week. I think I would be a hot chick. If you become a woman can you make out with yourself? 1. How does it feel to be a woman trapped in a man's body?
2. How do you know what Des has in her stools?

I just want you all to know that I will be one sexy chick when this is all said and done. I may even surpass the shear beauty of the Polish Princess aka The Dez, so she better watch out cause "I feel like the prettiest girl in the whole development"

Ask not what your country can do for you, read my lips, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall, we're gonna smoke em' out of their holes and get them on the run and speak softly and carry a big stick. That should clear up this situation.

I know the identity of the perp. but out of respect for their family I cannot reveal their identity. Unless someone were to give me a sweet deal, then I would rat them out like there was no tomorrow.

ODB,
History is being made in this year's All-Star game and all you can talk about is the Cardinals. What about the ENTIRE NL outfield being members of the 500 home run club? That is the real story. What about Mr. Bonds, the greatest player of all time, as he makes his march towards the Great Bambino? I'll give your Cardinals credit they are doing pretty well, but they don't give pennants in July my friend. This year's Cardinals could be last year's Royals.(Oh no he didn't!!) What am I talking about? Everyone is just waiting until the end of August when College football season starts anyway. My preseason #1, The Georgia Bulldogs. They have an awesome QB, a tremendous D line and the best head coach/defensive coordinator combo in the country.(Hard to believe they are one of my rival schools, huh?) Check back here in late December to congratulate me on my tremendous football prognosticating skills.

On a completely unrelated note, if I don't get my USMLE scores this Wednesday I am going to choke someone! And I don't mean that figuratively, I will find someone and apply posterior cricoid pressure until they cease to be.
Sorry, the suspense is getting to me.....

Everybody just CALM DOWN!! Des' Palm Pilot situation has been corrected. It is working properly now. I know that this has been a source of despair and consternation (look it up, ODB) for everyone on this board. The above quote is tough to read, but I think it shows someone crying out for help. It has been a rough couple of days for all involved, I know. The Palm just needed a little TLC. Des has been quite verbally abusive towards her Palm so we had to work through some trust issues with it, but everything is okay now. Des has learned not to project her problems onto the Palm and that calling it "a worthless piece of crap" is very hurtful and causes the Palm to question its self-worth. The Palm has learned that withholding Sync is not the proper way to deal with its anger towards Des. I think with a little time they will both be able to function together properly and have a normal home life. Thanks, of course, to the Palm Pilot Pimp!!

Board scores are in. I am sure everyone that reads this board has passed! Congrats to all!! It was a good feeling to get that letter in the mail today, knowing that I don't have to re-study all the basic science crap.

How is everyone doing?? Hopefully the break is good. I got to do some surgery the last few days. Did a Burch procedure on Friday and a hysterectomy today. Very cool!! I had my entire right hand in this woman's abdomen today, scanning her omentum and felt her liver as well. Pretty neat....also got so sew up some fascia and drive the colonoscopy camera. I spoke to some faculty at school today and we had 12 students fail out of the 222. I also heard that one of our faculty went to the meetings on scoring this year and they made the tests harder than in the past. Therefore, our pass rate was not as strong as the class before us, but relative to everyone else in the country we did about the same.

Glad to hear you made it over there to OH alright. Enjoy the Delta and keep in touch.

Hope all is well. Went up to Nebraska this weekend, hangin out with my kiddos and brother. Had a lot of fun.
I start my two week Family Practice rotation a week from tomorrow, so definitely looking forward to that. Already done a Burtch procedure and a Hysterectomy.
During the hyster, the woman had adhesions. After the doc freed them up, he had me put my whole hand inside this woman's abdomen!!! I was sweeping her omentum with my palm and I felt her liver with the back of my hand! Very cool!!! Also got to sew up the fascia layer in both cases. So been fun so far.

I was wondering if anyone on SDN ever has seen/ used Slice of Life Year 2, which is on a CD, not the laser disc version, but a version where someone creative made jpegs of all the slides on ERF's notes or used a digital camera to take those pictures. I was given Slice of Life Year one by my big brother, but I'm just curious if there is a SOL Yr 2? If its out there, can I pay someone to burn it /or I have old morning reports to trade from my preceptorship over the summer in IM from MCI?

Supposedly, the folks at University of Utah came out with a new version of SOL this past year. I don't know if that is what you are talking about. Personally, I find SOL pretty low yield. I have used it many times, but I feel that WebPath and a really good Histopath atlas are all that you really need to do well on Erf's tests. Contrary to popular belief his pics are of pretty basic stuff. Now his bonus questions are a different story.

Hey,
Guess who decided to move to Fort Myers on the exact same weekend that the first Category 3 hurricane has hit Fort Myers in 60 years? That's right, ME! I was supposed to move in today, but of course everything is locked down. I am not even sure if I can move in tomorrow since there will be massive power outages and storm surge up to 12 feet. For all I know my apartment might be floating in the Atlantic by 7 P.M. tonight. I usually like hurricanes, but this one is pissing me off! Damn you Charley!!!!!!

Hey Bama,
Sucks to hear that you're not able to move in to Ft. Myers. If it helps, I'll do my patented curse. I'm not too sure if it actually works, but at least its cathartic: DANG YOU, CHARLEY!!! DANG YOU!!! (with both fists pumping in the air) :meanie: :meanie: :meanie: Hope it helps. Keep all of us posted, and stay safe.

Oh, is anybody else from our class actually down there yet???

I dont' know if I could stand being in that room with a bunch of strangers. But you only have to do it thru december, right? Are you still sitting in the same seat? Is 2007 a lot different that us?

I got my first rotation info; it's family medicine in a suburb that will be about a 1/2 hour drive. I'm excited!

Hey Mary,
Yeah, it's really wierd. No, I'm not in the same seat. Actually, I think I've taken your seat! But I'm only there till December. I've heard that most of first semester is really just neuro, so in reality its only feels like nine more weeks. The longest part of neuro is the first five weeks with all the dissections, so if you really want to think about it, it's feels like five weeks. And the hardest part of dissection is the brain, which is two weeks from now. So, if I hang tight, the semester should really feel like it's two or three weeks long...ok, who am I kidding :( It really stinks without you guys here. Ok, enough with the venting. I'm still getting to know 2007. They seem pretty nice.

Good luck with your family practice rotation! I know you'll do well out there!! :luck:

Been trying to run everyday, and that is about it. I will be starting at my old hospital on Tuesday to do a two week rotation so I am getting geared up for that. I feel like I should be reading something right now instead of this computer screen. I think I forgot a lot of the stuff I studied a few months ago. Anyway, good luck and remember that stuff I gave you....it should come in handy!

What up y'all
How has the break been? I started my two week Family Med Pre-rotation this week. Been doing quite a bit. Yesterday, put in a central line, drained a sebaceous cyst, and been helping in surgery all week, being first assist. Done a few colonoscopies solo, with the doc standing by. Pretty cool stuff. The clinic has been pretty cool as well.

Anyway, good luck to all on your first rotation. I know I am getting pretty nervous. Gonna try to read the pertinent info in Mosby's this week and maybe a little pathophys.

Later guys!

I know I haven't posted much at all, but I had to take this opportunity to agree with Mary. Chris you are such a gunner. Before we know it you're going to be graduating the year ahead of us instead of after. I appreciate the gunner comment. However, I am just taking advantage of my opportunity. It has been a blast though. Today had a lap chole, extracting a gallstone the size of an egg, no sh#@. Then did a breast biopsy and then another central line; however this one was very very tough and took like 45 minutes.

Hang in there JP. I enjoyed the twinkie analogy. I laughed out loud in the library and got a dirty look from the librarian. No humor in the Clyde library I tell ya.

Anyway, next week is the big one!!! Have fun!

James, my brotha' how goes it? I trust that you are keeping those young whippersnappers in shape. They are all punks you know. Slap Matt B. upside his head for me and give him a big Roll Tide! Hey guys, I'm actually glad to see that you all are nervous for your family med rotations. It makes me feel I'm more justified in being nervous for my surgery rotation that I have first. Just be happy that you're not going into the OR as first assist quite yet. I think I'm going to have a great first rotation though!

I definitely feel like I forgot everything though. There was some residual cobwebby knowledge in the back corner of my mind when I took boards. Now even those little tidbits have gone.

I am excited to get back into a routine though and get going so that I can see what third year is really like. It's so weird to think of how varied our experiences are going to be.

Even though I was glad you were nervous, I wish the best to all of you on the first rotation. I think they'll understand that it's our first rotation.

Those of you on the beach...have fun, but remember not to wear your bikinis or thongs to your rotation. We don't want to hear about the "3rd year wearing the itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini" in Dr. Desai or Dr. Willsie's talks.

Thanks Hugh and James for the prayers and concern. Things have actually been fine here; just some wind and rain but nothing I haven't seen before. Personally, it's been pretty sad hearing the hospital pts talk about the damage from Hurricane Charley. There was this one homeless guy from the area who actually rode out the hurricane lying in a ditch, then was admitted to the hospital like the next day for slipping and falling when he was helping people clean things up!! Crazy stuff. Anyway, thanks so much.
Hope rotations are going well for everyone! I'm doing Int. Med. and really like it. Peace out!!

The Rock has come BACK to the WWE and the ODB has come BACK to SDN! It's a relief to know that our Florida contigent is safe and sound. I was really worried because Doctordes didn't respond to my email I sent her. She didn't respond not because of the hurricane but because she was avoiding the ODB. That damn Doctordes back to her old tricks. MJ will be pleased to know that the ODB observed an autopsy last Friday. JP, how bout them Cubs. Not only is their stadium falling apart so is their team. Not only is ODB back on the scene but so is C-dawg! Can I get a holla? Man I have been working my nuts off here in IM. My doc has patients at all the hospitals in Wichita plus does clinic and a few nursing homes. So I have been getting done at like 8-830 pm! So that is why you haven't seen the likes of me

How is roations for you all?? I am sure it is good. We just got internet a few days ago, because they are a little slow down here. Seen some cool stuff.

And that stuff about DrDes......I have called her three times and she hasn't returned my calls....so I am sure that sneaky little minx is up to something! :)

anyway, I am due to get to the nursing home for rounds, so I will let you guys go. JP, stay strong bro....I think a pan-asian once said..."He who stands on toilet high on pot!"

Hey TAM, the only shock for me in the last few days is the Irish win yesterday :luck:

And, no, my team is not on probation (not this year anyway-- give us some time for other investigations to be completed please).

Hope surgery is going well.

Surgery is a bit like an entirely different culture, isn't it?! TAM, where is your rotation at? I'm doing a surgery rotation right now in Richmond, MO. I love it because it's really laid back and the nurses are fantastic. I got really lucky with this one. Next I'll be with Dr. Arnold and I know that will be a different ball game. Do you have your own patients to round on? Do you have to be on call? Surgery is a rough one to start with, I agree.

I hope everyone can keep in contact on SDN. I like to check it out every now and then to see how everyone is doing.

First day in family med clerkship. I survived. It is very intense and the doc is somewhat of a freak. He doesen't bother me yet. I think he likes me! I drew blood on an 11 year old indian girl today. Saw sore throats, and back pain. This guy moves fast!

And what do I get pimped on? Pharm, pharm and more pharm. Damn brand names.

Glad to hear everyone's OK.

Hello old friends! I have been watching all these huricaines and hope everyone is okay!
KC has been it's sunny midwest self most of the time. I'm in psych at the VA this month...yes, it's everything you are thinking that it is and more!!!
All inpatient, so we do get to do a tiny bit of medicine.
Hospital day is tomorrow, we'll miss you! I will get the cheap pens and leftover, stale, 1/2 danishes for you!
Is everyone behaving themselves, bathing daily and brushing thier teeth as we were instructed to do in the summer program. Oh, yeah, don't forget to be nice to the nurses (I never would have though of that on my own!)

Sorry it took so long to reply to those that had questions about surgery. I'm currently trudging through it at Mercy Suburban, in Norristown, PA. I mostly see biliary surgery and hernia repairs, although for some reason, the students also scrub in with a plastic surgeon once a week. I assisted with liposuction and an abdomenoplasty (tummy-tuck). Interesting stuff, but the surgery lasted over 5 hours. As for rounding, I usually round on a patient if I assisted during their surgery, plus one or two other interesting cases, as they arise. For pimp questions, I get hit mostly with stuff related to perioperative care, lab values and diagnostic tests, since they can only ask me so many questions about the layers of the abdominal wall and pancreaticobilliary anatomy. Basically, my residents want to see if I know the "whys" rather than low yield esoterica. I got my boys roasted over an open fire the other day for knowing nothing about ERCPs when one of my patients was scheduled to have one later in the day. Good luck to anyone else doing surgery next, and say good-bye to sleep (and regular meals) for a month!

Welcome back EuroDocMom who is neither in Europe nor a doc (yet), discuss..... Seriously, maybe you should change your screen name. Get over the German techno days and live in the now! Maybe you could switch it to AmeriStudentdocMOM. Don't you miss me bothering you a regular basis? I know Pres. Dawson does. Where is she anyway? I don't feel like the Fort Myers constituency is being properly represented. No taxation without representation! Don't make us throw tea in the Gulf. We'll do it!

I finished up my first Internal Medicine rotation today by hanging out in the pathology lab! My preceptor let me go down and hang with the pathologist some today because he knows that cranks my tractor. He's a cool guy and I had a lot of fun on my first rotation. Big Steve, you will be pleased to know that my first surgery rotation is trauma surgery. It is supposed to be really cool. They let you put in central lines and chest tubes and do internal cardiac massage, etc.

How often do you guys have didactics in KC? We have them at least 3 times a week here in the Fort. This week we had them 4 days, not to mention the mandatory DME dinner meeting that we had to attend. I turned down a free drug rep dinner last night because I was tired of going to meetings. It was probably a stupid thing to turn down b/c the restaurant where it was being held is supposed to be awesome. Anyway, ya'll be good and I holla' atcha later.

So, your back to your old love, Path? Man, you are worse than me with the "wheel of specialties".-I'm sticking to my guns now!
I'm going into my last week on inpt psych at the VA. WOW, what an experience. The best thing was that I got to have my own patients, and we did manage them medically, so I got to learn a 'lil medicine. No pimping (except day 2 in ECT) and totally laid back.
Supposed to start surg on Friday. I should find out where sometime before friday!! It's between two places. Just waiting to hear from the doc. One's awesome on KS side, and one is affiliated w/ MCI (YIKES).
We have didactics once a month in KC.
Is the post-test up for you if you are done with your rotaton? Are any "post-tests" up???
Hey, I actually had to pull out the ol' red path book this week! I know, I know, I am a dork. I just have forgotten too much stuff and the fruity tooty clinical "handbooks" just don't gimme the WHY's! You know I have to know the WHYs! (OCD acting up again).
Yes, I have looked up things in Harrison's, too, but it's kinda heavy to carry up to the 10th floor every day.
What books are ya'll using?
The General is doing well, we are working on our top secret research project together. I met w/ Dr. Dew this week about it. Looks promising. She is in IM on the north side. She has officially marked IM off of her spec choices-big surprise for a future carpenter!

Finished surgery! And what a way to go out! For my last procedure in the OR, I got to witness the ...um... removal of a foreign object from the nether regions of the pelvic anatomy. This object was 12 inches long, vaguely mushroom-shaped and required batteries. The genius who inserted it also waited 3 days until he decided that maybe he should see a doctor. After 4 weeks of seeing mostly hernia repairs and cholecystectomies, this was a bit of a change.

Hey dudes!
Hmmm...not much going on in good old Ft. Myers today. Bama and I have planned to rendevous at the pool in approximately 10 minutes. I'm in FP right now and can most definitely say that I will not be a family doctor. It's only a month, right?! Nothing new to report here, though.
How's your rotation going, Miss Mary?

Hey Des!
My FP rotation is OK. Although I've told my preceptor that I salivate over FP (in so many words) I am not quite sold. It's basically about sending every patient out of the office with a little slip of paper with a prescription for SOMA, Flexeril, or Avelox or debrox ear drops. And the occasional sebaceous cyst removal. I do indeed interview sometimes with the mindset of digging up some pathology, but for the most part, it's nothing like anything we've learned.

4 more weeks to go. Enjoy! :D

Hey pres! *pats pres on the back 'sup?

2 days into FP. It is going pretty well. I saw my first circumcision this morning. Man, I can still remember mine back in the day; but I couldn't walk for a year after it!

Anyway, my doc does a lot of OMT and such so that is cool. Getting to practice that superb cranial we learned.

FP sux rhino!! Who wants to spend their life treating ingrown toenails, hypertension and sinusitis? My preceptor is cool though. He lets me do everything. I basically do the entire work up, write out my treatment plan and write out the prescriptions. He then tells me if I am right and signs off on everything. I need some pathology people! At least with IM I saw WPW, and a few cases of scleroderma. Oh well, only 2.3 more weeks and I'm back on IM. Des loves her FP rotation. Right, Des?? ;)

Hope everyone is doing well. We're just chillin' down here in the Fort. Well, gotta go to a free drug rep dinner! My favorite part of 3rd year! :)

What's up Pres!? How bad are you making all of us look on rotations? How are the kids? I've thought of you quite a bit with your hubby still overseas and wonder how you guys are.
The Fort is holding up well. My FP rotation is.....hmm.....is almost over. That's the perfect way to describe it.:)
ODB, still talkin trash I see! Anything new?

Quick question...how did you guys go about presenting Stephen's neuro cases? What exactly are they looking for? How do they grade it? I'm guessing it's like the path cases we do for erf.

Anyhow...glad to see that you guys are posting again. Neuro's ok, but it's getting old. I'll be glad when it's over. Looks like everybody's on FM. I'm guessing Mary's coming to the end of FM, though. Glad to hear that you guys are having fun and learning alot. All right, holla!

Bama and Des, are you staying out of trouble in Ft. Myers? Des shoot me an email. Des, good luck on your presentation. I,too, am in FP. Actually, I've learned a lot although the hours have been longer than I would have expected. I am at the UHS Family care center in Independence. Hey, JP, how bout them Cubs? Oh wait...they are not in the postseason like the Cards. I just hope they are enjoying their vacation. The neuro cases...pick a neuro case in one of the Neuro journals in the library. Divide it three ways and present much like a Path case. You'll be presenting in one of the rooms that we do the mock patient interviews. Usually these presentations are free points unless you are lucky enough to get Stephens so don't sweat it! Your final exam that week is a much bigger deal. JP, if you have ?, email me.

How are ya dude? That whole neuro case thing was kinda crazy. If I remember correctly, you basically have to present it like a patient, i.e. 23 year old man presents with right sided hemiparesis and whatever other symptoms, blah blah blah and you basically have to reconstruct where the lesion is and perhaps possible causes. It's all kind of a blur. Perhaps our fellow colleagues here on sdn can offer more input. They award you points based on your successful completion of presenting the case. You do it with 2 other ppl and you all have to 'work together' on it. So just make sure that you are on the same page as your comrades and it should all be just fine.

Sure do miss ya bud. FP is done Nov 5th. I'll probably end up missing it. I go to ob/gyn next. Drop me a note anytime, k?

* JP... we presented our case to "sweet lew"... nuff said!!! :-) I will add that signing up for the case you want to present ASAP is important since they aren't suppose to let every one present the same type of cases.

* unlike my fellow comrades who are in the FP trenches, I am in my peds rotation. It is safe to say that had I done a peds rotation before having kids, I may have never had kids:-)
It's not too bad...... only bad part is some kid in the clinic is ALWAYS getting a shot therefore some kid is ALWAYS screaming bloody murder... good clean fun there!!!!

* hubby is due back for his 14 day leave ("vacation" in military terms) 20 NOV thru 04 DEC.... IF all goes well, they should get back (for good) in FEB/MAR '05. He's flying a lot and staying busy..... says it is fun to see all the kids waving to them as they fly over their villages.... they'll take their old plastic drink containers and fill them w/ hard candy and give that out to the kids as they fly by..... not something we'll see on the news, of course.

* BAMA.... how about the USC game!!! Yes, it's a week old... but I have to enjoy the glory since Saturday they'll turn around and forget to "show up" for the Mississippi game!!

Hey there you pan asian. Neuro was so incredibly easy! It is shocking that not everyone received an A!!!!! hahahahahahahahaha

No, seriously, if you attended those afternoon sessions and you studied hard during the section, you will be fine. I have actually permanently erased that horrifying week from my memory. I honestly can't remember anything about it, other than getting sloppy drunk on Saturday night!!!!!! That's it

We had Treffer, McClain and Desai down here in Wichita today for an all day OPP review. For those of you that aren't too pumped about OPP, it would have been your worst nightmare. OPP from 9-4pm. Inominants, lumbar, thoracics, cervical and some Still's techniques. It was a great review, so I really enjoyed it. But the day was kind of long.

Well off to Starbucks to study before Scrubs comes on! JP, give me a holla sometime.

I decided last week that I would rather spend 10 straight hours in the OR than 3 hrs seeing pts in clinic! Does anyone else find themselves feeling this way???

Mary, why you so out of the loop? Big Steve has been Big Steve ever since there was a Big Steve. And if a woman wants to be called Big Steve then it is her right to be called Big Steve. This country was founded on the premise that a Big Steve divided against itself cannot stand. That is why Big Steve must return to her roots and embrace her dermatologicalness and cast aside this surgery foolishness.

Mary- I'm on "inpatient family medicine (IM in name only). Anytime code blue gets called, all the docs and students head straight to the room, unless you are in surgery. Yesterday, it was another day, another code, and we narrowly avoided a code today.

Who voted that? The citizen's of Cleveland? In my opinion, every city seems to think it alone is unique in bad sports luck. In answer to Wolverine's post re: 3rd and 4th year clerkships and the exams...here's a current MS-IV view.

I'm at POH, and I had a great 3rd year. In fact, I haven't talked to any of my classmates who did not have a good year. It is difficult to move again, especially if you moved to go to school and also if you have friends at allo schools who walk across the street from school to go to the hospital. Sometimes I felt like a drove around more than I would have liked.
I enjoyed having an elective and my site also gave us a surgery subspecialty choice for our second GS rotation. That meant I was able to choose from ENT, ophtho, urology, ortho, etc, instead of just GS.

Planning for 4th year really begins in the spring of third year, and you are essentially, on your own. If you have decided on a field, and are looking at residency spots, go to the websites and start pulling applications. Most hospitals won't accept apps for the next year until March or later.
Sometimes this feels like a pain in the butt, that you're trying to set up rotations when you still have things going on. Deal with it.

Boards are in August. Deal with it. Personally, I love the fact that I'm *done* with boards and my friends are talking about sequesterng themselves during Christmas. That said, I think I would strongly consider taking some time off in August not only to study, but to prepare for applications, especially since this year you go through ERAS (get down on your knees for that one, ERAS is great!)

The one thing I can advise you with is to be on top of things. Get your regsitration stuff done, get you pretest done, your MEDIQ, etc. Don't wait until the last minute for everything or you'll A) make the OCCE miserable and you won't like that B) miss important deadlines, and you won't like that and C) make your memories of this time bad (and you won't like that either). If you're not organized, work to get that way. quickly.

But the post tests definitely suck. You should only wish we got to take the shelf exams.

PM me if you have questions. :p

Thanks Everybody! It was a pretty good b'day except that I had to work last night and one of our patients died. Going with my attending to tell the family is the absolute worse thing ever. Makes me glad I am going into Path. But other than that it was a good b'day. I hope everyone is doing well. I miss all my KC peeps.

Hey, Bama!!

Happy B-day!

I survived my first day of L&D today but we didn't have any deliveries :)
I think it is going to take some getting use to getting up this early as opposed to being on FP. Everyone seems really nice and I think I am going to enjoy being at the hospital finally.

Hope things are going well for all of you!!

I just wanted to add in that I'm also on my OB rotation. (And bump up our thread!) I really do like this rotation even though the hours are very long. I've helped deliver 20 babies, many c-sections, even twins. I've also been first or second assist on over 10 gynecological surgeries....all in two weeks.

Now that I've had two months of surgery and this month of OB/GYN, I don't know if I'll know what to do next month in psychiatry. No procedures, no scrubbing?!

Anyway, I also wanted to really recommend the book, Current Obstetrics and Gynecology Diagnosis and Treatment. It's a great resource, especially for the procedures, and an easy read.

Have a good weekend!

Hey guys, I just got into KCUMB for the upcoming year. I'm wondering about Health insurance while in school. Where did you guys get this, does the school offer a program? or did you have to go private, What kind of cost does it include?

Also, I have already gotten in and I'm waiting to send my deposit until my bro gets in, he called and they told him he was in the qualified applicant pool. What does that mean? Is there anything i can/should do, to help speed this process up?

hello Dr. MaryC and gang,

I can't remember if I emailed you back or not. I've been all over!
Interviews: Mayo, Harvard (Spaulding), Northwestern (RIC), U of Michigan, U of Washington, U of Colorado. Stanford decided not to download the rest of my app once they found out I was a D.O. No sweat.
Rank list: see above.

Hope all is well with you guys and that rotations are going good! :p

And may the ODB Rest In Peace.

Gotta go back to studying boards : (

Hey, do any of you guys know if any of your classmates are at the Moberly, MO AHEC site? If you do, could you PM me with who it is so I can contact them, or email them to let them know I'm interested in getting in touch.

Thanks

Hey guys, quick question...I understand that we as third years do not have any vacation until our fourth year. So, what happens when we do need to break away from rotations. So, for example: does KCUMB pull you out of rotations if you fail boards so that you can have some time to study? Typically how much time do they give you? And, for the million dollar question, when/how do you make it up? Thanks guys!

well, most sites will give the students Christmas vacation...since fewer of the hospital staff work anyway. and you will usually fet at least a couple of days at Thanksgiving. You do get five vacation days per year, so there is a little time to get away. But really - you won't be able to get out of dodge every time you feel like it as an intern/resident/attending, so get used to having a small amount of time all at once or ask for an occasional three day weekend.

You get a month as independent study that you must take in august (that's kind of when you're studying for Boards.) I would recommend that you take that month. You get credit for it when you pass the test. You also get a month for straight vacation, and can either take it as a month off (in april seems to be the most popular) or during your residency interviews.

I have no idea how the University takes care of anything if you fail Boards. I would not recommend that you try an find out the hard way. You might ask your coordinator. :)

Thanks Electra,
Reason I was asking is that I'll be finishing my first two years here at UHS/KCUMB in one more week (woot, woot!!!), but it seems that Sarah Hazelton wants me to start clerkships right away, as in Jan 1. I have yet to take the boards, and I think that the longer I push it off, the more difficult it will be for me to score as high as I possibly can. Hoping to take it in the middle of Feb (USMLE), and then come back to Kansas City for my clerkships. Am I allowed to take the USMLE step 1 while on an official leave of absence? I read the regulations on the nbme website, and it states that I've got to be officially enrolled. Yeah, I'm in a bit of a mess here. Can anybody here shine some light on the subject.

And for something completely different: I think I can kind of understand how you guys felt when it was your last week of class in KC. I'm starting to feel it too. Alot of memories...I find myself happy to be finished with the classroom, but at the same time, a litle sad because I'll leave something I'm so familiar with (class/lecture) to enter something that's totally different (rotations). I guess I'm just glad to finally get some closure!

yeesh! I don't know how that will work. Since you have to take the COMLEX in June, I would imagine that taking the USMLE would be easier then as well. The question would be getting some study time in, since what is on Step I is not the same as Step II and clerkships are more conducive to Step II.

If you could start your clerkships in January and board in June, you would be done with third year next december and be right on time for the January administration of COMLEX.

I will PM you.

Thanks Electra,

I just wanted to add...don't feel bad if you have to start rotations in January and then take time off in May/June to study for boards and take them in June. I think that rotations are a wonderful reinforcer for boards. Especially for pharmacology...what better way to help remember drugs than to use them. (Ooops that sounds like I'm promoting the abuse of street drugs. Really I'm not a dealer.) You see what I mean? If you did rotations like Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry you would be getting a wonderful review and you would have the easier schedules where you could put some book time in at least a couple days a week. Most doctors pimp you on questions that are really high yield and that would reinforce your study too. I really think it would be a good plan, but I understand your reasoning for wanting to take the USMLE now.

You've done a wonderful job dealing with a schedule out of the routine so far. I know that no matter which schedule you end up with it will all work out for the best.

Also, I hope everyone is still enjoying rotations. Chris, I'm sure you're still studying more than most of us. Have you all been working on setting up fourth year rotations yet?

Thanks, Anna. I have yet to really decide what I want to do. I guess I have a little less than 24 hours to come up with what I've decided to do. Thanks for the advice, Electra, and Anna. Hey guys, if you were in my situation, what would you do. Keep it coming!

Congrats on completing your 2nd year stuff! That went fast.

You should be able to take the same 6 weeks off before comlex that everyone else does. And be able to participate in the Integrative Section. It's only fair.

So you start your rotations January 1st. Do you have a say in your rotation schedule or are they just going to place you wherever? Regardless, you will be prepared, no problem.

If you do a rotation in January and then take usmle in February, I'm afraid you won't have had enough time to study for usmle.

Most of us set up a schedule over that 6 weeks of what to study and when. I'm guessing you are worried that you are going to start to forget stuff between now and June.

But I think you will be OK if you go ahead, start rotations, set up a weekend subject study schedule (if you're not doing kaplan) and take 6 weeks before the tests.

My $0.02.

Good luck friend! :luck:

James, my brotha'. How's it going? Have you just considered cheating? I mean it would be much easier. :) Seriously though, maybe they would let you start your rotations in January but use your 4th year vacation block in June or July to take the USMLE. I know you aren't supposed to be able to take your vacation block until 4th year, but yours is a unique situation. Come on OCCE people!! Think outside the box, dang it! Anyway, I hope that it works out for you. So far the best thing about 3rd year is that it is a year closer to 4th year. :)
