View Full Version : UHS Class 2006 part 01
drchris33 02-05-2002, 01:23 PM I interviewed on Jan 23rd and found out yesterday that I was accepted!! I feel as if I am not treading water anymore in the sea of life. I am on the road to becoming a doc!!!
I am so pumped for the upcoming years ahead!!
Congrats to everyone else in the class of 2006!!
Chris
Tammy 02-06-2002, 10:36 PM Chris,
Congratulations! I know how you feel - I'm on cloud 9!
You were the one with the kids, right? Are you going to be able to take the foster children with you? Just curious.
Have you thought about where you are going to live? I just posted another message under UHS Class of 2006. I have a 12-year-old and need to find a good place for children. Let me know if you find anything.
Take care & congrats again!
drchris33 02-08-2002, 08:18 PM Tammy--
Wow, I had no idea you had a 12 year old. We are thinking about living in a suburb on the Kansas side; will be looking for a small town (around 3000-7000 people or so) My wife has a sister that lives in Overland Park, so I think she will help us out. If I find any info I will post it and let you know!!
Congrats again to you too!!!

EUROdocMOM 02-08-2002, 08:27 PM Hi future classmates! I was so excited to hear I was accepted to UHS! I have 5 and 7 year old girls and relatives in KC. I looked all over for places to live when I was there for my interview ...just before the ICE storm! I liked the Kansas side, too and understand that although taxes are higher the school system is better. Well, happy house hunting!
doc2b34 02-09-2002, 07:15 PM Hey guys,
Congrats to all for being accepted at the UHS. I am accepted already for TUCOM, but I also applied to the UHS. I was informed that my application qualifies, but they haven't invited me to an interview yet. What do you guys think my chances would be if I heard this from the admissions office? doc2b34
PS- I an excited about TUCOM, but the only reason why I would choose UHS over TUCOM would be that my osteopathic family physician went there and he recommended it. What do you guys think. Thanks
Tammy 02-13-2002, 02:48 PM Doc2B,
I think if you call the admissions office, they will let you know where your application stands. Angela is the person I always dealt with and she is wonderful.
UHS is a great school. I keep hearing more positive things about it from the physicians in this area. I don't know anything about TUCOM, though, so I can't compare them for you.
Good luck with UHS, and if not UHS, then good luck at TUCOM.
Tammy 02-13-2002, 02:54 PM Chris & Eurodoc,
Thanks for the info. I have some friends that live in Olathe, but I think that would be too long of a commute. Perhaps Overland Park? A couple of people have recommended Independence & Gladstone areas in Missouri. Are you going to use the apartment hunting service or try to find a house? It would be really hard to go back to apartment living, although some of the amenities would be nice, like a swimming pool.
I guess I just need to take a few days and really look.
Let me know if you find anything you fall in love with. Want to all go together and get a 10-bedroom mansion? ha! ha!
Well, talk to you all soon!
- Tammy
drchris33 02-13-2002, 03:20 PM Tammy--
Wouldn't recommend living in Overland Park unless you have a big bank account. I am sure there are some cheap places to live but I doubt it. I think we are going to at least start with the apartment search. The lady said they look for houses too. I don't think my family could all fit in an apartment (4 kids, two adults). I don't think our neighbors would like us.
Yeah we could all go in on a huge mansion....I think my kids would drive you all nuts!! :)
Let me know how things go!
Chris
T.A.M 02-13-2002, 06:07 PM Future Classmates,
I'm going to KC this weekend to check out some of the housing options. Although I'll mostly look at places that would suit someone who's single without kids, I'd be happy to do some on the ground research for anyone. By the way, I'm still looking for a roomate(s)!
Tammy 02-21-2002, 03:23 PM Thomas,
I just now got back on the board. Did you find any promising apartments on your weekend to KC?
- Tammy
T.A.M 02-21-2002, 05:13 PM Tammy,
I mainly looked at places that others had recommended. You have a kid, correct? I'm not sure if Bennington Ridge would be the best place for a kid (imput from anyone who lives there on this topic?). There were some townhouses down the street from Bennington that were really spacious, but of course, more expensive. I can't remember the name, but I'm sure someone at the school knows the place I'm talking about. As for Overland Park, I drove through the area just to see what its like. Its a pretty nice district, but the rental quotes I saw on the internet seem a little steep. Plus, the commute from that area doesn't look promising, although I admit I didn't take the highways. I never seriously considered living there, so I didn't investigate the housing too closely. Regarding Independence, I went through the area briefly, and what I saw looked like it had seen better days. However, Independence is convenient to the school. In general, there's apartments and houses for rent all throughout the city, and it seems like every residential area has a park nearby. Except for the area immediately downtown and some other industrial areas, most of the city has a small town quaintness to it.
Hey all, congrats on your acceptances. I'm a current 3rd year in KC, and have a great housing recommendation. I own a house in the perfect location that I will be looking to sell in July or August. If you think you can't own a home, I can assure you there is likely a way. I pay less per room for my house than most do for apts. On top of that, houses appreciate, so you can pocket some money in the end when it's time to sell.
I don't mean to sound like a salesman here, but I think wasting money on rent is just dumb. Like I said, it's a great house, needs no work, in a great locale. Move in timing would be perfect. Anyway, if anyone would like more info, or have any other questions, e-mail me @ kcdocs@kcnet.com
Good luck.
Tammy 02-24-2002, 11:29 AM Thomas,
Thanks for the heads-up. I guess I need to call the apartment search people and pick up a Sunday paper or two.
Thanks for all your help! Let me know if you pick a place to live.
Talk to you soon,
Tammy
AnnaMags 02-26-2002, 12:47 PM Has anyone from the February 20 or 22 interview dates received notification? If so, how?
Don't you hate the waiting game??
AnnaMags 02-28-2002, 08:58 AM Wow! I got my acceptance yesterday to UHS. I came back from class at 7pm. I walked into the lobby of my residence hall and there was my boyfriend, my parents, and my sister. They brought my envelope from home. It was great to have them all there with me to open it.
Now what?! It just hasn't set in yet. I can't believe how it feels to know I can do what I've always wanted to do and I can have plans for the future again.
Can't wait to meet all of you who will be in my class. I know the students really sold the school to me. If we can have students as great as them--this will be great.
solie 02-28-2002, 03:13 PM Congratulations AnnaMags!
It's great that you have such an amazingly supportive family that would do that for you! :D
I'll see you there in August...only 5 1/2 months to go! :)
jrfromks 02-28-2002, 04:31 PM Hey all! I just want to extend a congratulations to all the future UHSers out there! I, too, will be attending next year. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you. I recently talked with a student at UHS, and the things he said about UHS made me even more excited to attend.
T.A.M 02-28-2002, 06:21 PM All,
Congratulations to all my future classmates! Its great to read such enthusiasm to begin med school. I myself can't wait to make the move to Kansas City and meet all of you.
Question: Is anyone else out there considering HPSP? <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />
jrfromks 03-01-2002, 10:56 AM Quick question for you all: When's everyone going to make the BIG move to KC, and where's everyone looking at to live? I'm not sure when I'll be heading up there because I only live about 6 hours from KC in western KS.
EUROdocMOM 03-01-2002, 11:21 AM HPSP, right here! I am already in the process. I should know if I have it in the next few weeks!
I am also wondering when to move to KC.
And where to move in KC!
Coming from the DC area, I LOVE the housing prices!
solie 03-01-2002, 06:10 PM I'm planning on moving down around August 5th, so a week or so before orientation starts. Hopefully that'll give me enough time to buy furniture and get stuff organized before classes start.
I sent in my deposit to Century Towers last week to get some sort of deal on the rent, so hopefully I'll have a place all set quite soon. I know it's early, but I'm really anal about stuff like that.
As for HPSP, is that the primary care in an underserved area deal? If I were an American citizen, I would love to do it! Unfortunately I'm not, so I don't qualify. I'm jealous of those who do! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
H-townComp 03-02-2002, 01:32 AM hey all,
I'm not gonna actually be attending UHS (going to Comp), but the school seemed great, nice students, profs, and administration....Dr. Peters interviewed me, he was awesome......alright....see ya
T.A.M 03-02-2002, 01:13 PM All,
I probably will make the move some time in late June, or July. I will most likely live at Bennington Ridge Apts. Like I said in previous posts, Century Towers might be nice, but its just a little too cramped if you're not coming directly from college and the neighborhood doesn't look too promising. But, it sure is convenient to the school!
Here's a question for anyone who plans to do HPSP or is currently doing it at UHS. Looking at the school calendar on the website, it doesn't appear that there's enough off time every year to do Active Duty Training at a base. So, do you basically get paid for 45 days a year to go to school?
Tammy 03-03-2002, 09:30 PM I'm lost...what is HPSP?
BamaAlum 03-04-2002, 06:10 AM HPSP is the Health Professions Scholarship Program which is offered by the 3 branches of the U.S. military. They pay your tuition, books, fees and give you a stipend in exchange for military service after completion of your medical training.
AnnaMags 03-05-2002, 10:28 AM To those who have been accepted:
As far as the computer upgrades go...how does that work? Do they mean they'll add the expense to your loan total?
T.A.M 03-05-2002, 06:05 PM Computer upgrades? I didn't get that info with my acceptance- then again, I got accepted two years ago. Can someone explain that to me?
BamaAlum 03-05-2002, 07:14 PM Tom,
They sent us a list of system requirements for our computers. They're pretty basic, although some are peculiar:

Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.x
drhillary 03-05-2002, 09:36 PM Dear Thomas A. Myrter:
I am proud to be in the UHSCOM class of '06 & actually asked about HPSP & UHSCOM time commitments during my interview, as I signed on with the Army last November. They assured me that around 10% of every class (so about 20 people) is in some form of military scholarship & they have always been able to work around schedules in the past. If you haven't signed on yet & want more info., feel free to e-mail me or post here-- but I can honestly say I think it's one of the best ways to go!! Good luck!
Detroit Mick 03-05-2002, 10:12 PM What about Mac computers? Are they OK? They are compatable with required software. Does anyone know why they require a Windows OS?
T.A.M 03-07-2002, 11:55 PM I have nothing further to add at this time, but I don't want our little discussion to get pushed too far back. By the way, has anyone found it odd that our school has only 2 pages of posts, but all the other XYZCOMs seem to have upwards of twenty-some? Come on! Where are our classmates? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> - Its almost 2AM, and I'm still doing work-related projects (Next year I suppose we can all say that sentence, but substitute "work" for "school"). This little guy probably looks much like I do right now!
BamaAlum 03-08-2002, 06:00 AM Tom,
I hear you man. What's up with Nova having 30 pages?? You would think with UHS's class size of 220+ we could hang with them. Anyway, just trying to help the cause.
AnnaMags 03-09-2002, 08:23 AM I've been wondering where everyone is too. I guess they just don't get on SDN. I'd sure like to talk with more of you. I sure enjoy seeing where everyone is from. Let's at least try to keep our post on the page.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend.
solie 03-09-2002, 04:29 PM Didn't we used to have another thread going somewhere with a few pages in it? Now if we could just find some way of adding the two threads together.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Have you seen the webpage the NSU-COM Class of 2006 has developed? It's very cool--I wish I knew more about how to do something like that, cuz it'd be cool to get one going for our class, too!
Batory 03-09-2002, 08:08 PM Hey guys,
Congrats and welcome to the UHS family. I was just reading through and your responses reminded me of my feelings of excitement a year ago. I am in the Class of '05! Just want to extend an invitation for you to ask any questions on here or email me at mhoefer@uhs.edu. I am also an HPSP'er (Army)if you have questions about that!
Get to know your classmates as much as you can on here, but you will have a great time this August when you get here for real! Having 250 compatriots to share med school with is a real treat. Looking forward to seeing you in KC!
Matt
Batory 03-09-2002, 08:16 PM Oh, and our threads were always small last year too. I guess not a lot of UHS'ers have heard of SDN. Good news though...'05 is developing a class website this year, so it should be really easy for you all to do the same thing once you get here.
BamaAlum 03-09-2002, 08:24 PM Hey everybody,
Does anyone know when UHS sends out financial aid award letters? I've completed my FAFSA so I'm just waiting for the school to to send me their award package.
T.A.M 03-10-2002, 01:41 PM Batory,
How does active duty training work for UHS? Looking at the calendar on the website, I don't see 45 consecutive open days. Do they just pay you while you're at school and call it active duty training?
By the way, when you begin your active tour, avoid 3rd ID at all costs!
Batory 03-10-2002, 04:53 PM Hey T.A.M.,
You have your first summer at UHS off, from about May 17 to August 13 (give or take a few days) So you can do your OBC then if you haven't done it yet. The second summer is spent at school, doing boards prep and getting ready for rotations, so yes, you will just get your 45 days active duty pay at school.
Don't worry, 3ID isn't even in my scope. Airborne all the way!
EUROdocMOM 03-10-2002, 08:08 PM Hi UHS-ers! I am trying to get some info from current students about how the typical school day and week run. What time classes start (8am?) and end most days for MS I & II year? Could anybody help with that?
I am waiting to hear about the HPSP, too. I will also be going Army. I am trying to get in shape for OBC!
Tammy 03-10-2002, 08:56 PM AnnaMags,
I saw your question about the computer and wondered the same thing. To me, the letter implied we were given "an allowance" from the school, but that doesn't even begin to make sense. I'm guessing that we are allowed something like $11,500 for living expenses through federal financial aid per year (after that we have to get private loans), and the computer expenses will be in addition to that...so perhaps we will be allowed to borrow $13,000 or something. (?) Purely a guess.
If any of you current students read this, please let us know how your computer expenses were handled.
Thanks!
Tammy
p.s. I can't wait to meet everyone is August. I'm starting the ole apartment search now.
Batory 03-11-2002, 09:05 AM Hello again,
Classes for MSI
Lecture from 8-12 every day. (1 hour blocks)
Lab about 3 times a week for 1-4 hours, typically Friday afternoon off. You are broken down into lab groups so you do not have afternoon labs with the whole class. Labs are: Anatomy, Intro to Clinical Medicine, Osteopathic Practices and Procedures, Pathology, etc.
As far as computers, you do not need one to go to UHS. There is always one available at the school (in the lab or study rooms). Most of my classmates and I have one at home because it is much more convenient to study from CD's, print off notes, read email etc. at home. I believe the amount of financial aid you are eligible to receive will increase so you can buy a computer, but I am an HPSP'er so don't quote me on that. I would positively wait until you get to school to buy all of the extras (zip drive) to see if you will really use them (I don't).
Later,
EUROdocMOM 03-11-2002, 03:34 PM Thank you so much for the info! I have been trying to find out that info for a long time!
By the way, I am from Virginia (Norther-VA-DC area)originally, lived in Germany the past 3 1/2 years, and am so excited to move out to the "heartland"!.
So,
Where is everyone coming from?
Any special reasons for choosing UHS?
UHS-ers tell us about yourselves! :p
solie 03-11-2002, 04:50 PM Does anyone know if there's required attendance in lectures/labs? I'm thinking it's probably required for OPP and Anatomy lab, but hopefully not for all the lectures. I know the web site says attendance is required at ALL lectures/labs, but is this actually enforced??
T.A.M 03-12-2002, 06:06 AM Can someone MSI or MSII answer this question? Although I'm sure there is much variety, how would you rate the quality of the classroom instruction overall? Who is your favorite professor and what does he/she teach? What is your favorite lab and why? What class or lab do you loathem, if any?
Detroit Mick 03-12-2002, 08:59 AM Hello to all my future UHS classmates.
I agree we should try and keep this thread going, particulary as we prepare for the school year. I think some good questions have been posed to MS1s and MS2s and am looking forward to reading their responses.
I look forward to meeting everyone in August.
Batory 03-12-2002, 03:19 PM Hey guys,
Lab and Lectures:
No lectures (8-12am)have required attendance, so you can pick and choose which ones you want to attend. Some professors will have full attendance and others will have a half full classroom depending on the lecture time, the topic, and their abilities. Also, some lectures are good, but you can get all the test info from reading for 15 minutes as opposed to sitting in class for an hour. Everyone has a different technique, but I try and attend as many as possible because I learn better that way. My favorites are Anatomy, Pathology, and Physiology. Af far as afternoon labs... OPP is mandatory, you recieve points from attendance. Professors can choose to give you points from test questions, practical exercises, or attendance. So it depends on how they do that. For example, you do not get points for attending Anatomy labs, those points are given in the practical exam....but nobody wants to screw their lab group by not showing up, and the only way to learn the body is to work on it, so attendance is pretty much 100%. On the other hand, ICM (Intro to Clinical Med) points are given on the test, so you can skip the 2 hour lab, read the notes for 10 minutes, and get all of the points, especially if you have previous clinical experience.
Bottom line, come to school and attend everything until you get a feel for what doesn't work for you.
Batory 03-14-2002, 07:33 AM And back up to the top....
drewdo 03-14-2002, 12:58 PM I second Batory's info - although he doesn't really try to make it to class - I hardly ever see him there. Ha Ha. Actually, I'm finding as the year goes by I am going to class less and less, especially the 8:00's. The school officially states that all classes are required, but they never take attendance. Although I did hear that they did once take attendance for the second years right before a long break, but it hasn't happened to us. And some professors you're better off skipping, because some are so bad they might actually confuse you instead of help you learn the material. Med school is really geared towards self-learning, especially the lecture material. And the lecture notes contain everything you need to know. Plus if you join Notepool you've got enough material to do well on the tests. DON'T buy any books until you figure out exactly what you'll use. (You don't really have enough time to read them anyway) I panicked during our first few histology classes and went out and bought the histo text - I've only read it twice. Some books I do recommend: Mosby's Physical Diagnosis, Robbin's Pathology, The Kimberly Manual for Osteopathic Treatments and definitely the board review books. I have found it helpful to follow along with the course material using both the "First Aid for the USMLE Step 1" book and the "Step Up" book. Not only does it help learn the material, but when it comes time to study for the boards I'm already familiar with the format of the review books! Also, if you want to look something up in one of the "required" texts, they're on reserve in the library. Or you can find an HPSP'er friend who's bought all the books on Uncle Sam's dollar. There's also some good subject-based board review books if you need additional help in any particular subject.
As far as good lectures to go to: Erf's path lectures are very entertaining and chock full of his medical politics; Bonnie Buxton is an excellent virologist/immunologist lecturer; Willsie for pulmonology; Bunag and Marinac for pharm, McWhorter for histo and Nelson for anatomy. The osteopathic lectures are skipped by a lot of people, as they're often too long and mostly fluff, ie. not packed with enough info. Some are more interesting, though. But as Batory said, the OPP labs are required - besides they're fun too. Some of the more awful lecturers are the MBA guys from Rockhurst and some of the pharm profs.
As far as a normal day as an MSI, I can't believe how little I study. I geared for the worst, though, so maybe it's just my perspective. Before I started, I warned my girlfriend that I'd have little time to be with her. I was so determined that all of my time outside of class would be spent studying. I was so wrong - and I'm still doing fine in class. Med school is fun and challenging, but try to live a balanced life outside of medicine - your patients will appreciate it!!
Detroit Mick 03-14-2002, 03:14 PM Any UHS students care to comment on the pros and cons of the varying hospitals for 3rd-year rotations? Are some better than others? Which ones should a student stay off from?
Thanks.
Michael
Batory 03-14-2002, 09:24 PM Hey, I go to class...I just don't hang out in the teacher's lounge with you DREWDO, so you don't see me around!
T.A.M 03-16-2002, 07:41 AM Once again, our discussion has drifted too far down the list, so I'll try to raise us up to the top again. Question: is anyone out there of the class of 2006 considering Bennington Ridge to live?
Freeeedom! 03-16-2002, 10:08 AM I'm not a third year anymore, but my comments on where to do your clinical years have stayed the same...it is very important that one spends the clinical years at institutions with both interns and residents! ABSOLUTELY.
Large hospitals with established programs seem to be well prepared for students and their needs. Didactics ALWAYS seem to be better and far more organized. And I find daily didactics with staff physicians to be highlights of my daily experience at these institutions.
AnnaMags 03-18-2002, 03:45 PM I just wanted to once again bump our thread up. I just got back from a week in Seattle for spring break. I enjoyed reading all of the responses from my time away.
A little about myself. My name is Anna and I'll be in the Class of 2006. I'm from the Kansas City area. I'm 22 years old and will be graduating this May from Central Missouri State University (we're the Mules). Hmm, don't know what else you all would like to know.
I'm excited to spend the next few months conversing on SDN. I think it's great we can go to each other and current UHS students with our questions and concerns.
Freeeedom! 03-19-2002, 07:18 AM HOLY CRAP!!!
You guys should've seen the hospital 3-4 years ago! I (with one other fella) kinda got in good with a security guard over there and did a very safe tour of the grounds and of the main level...it was spooky.
That place was once a thriving hospital, and then was abandoned. It had bums all over, people throwing and breaking windows, beer bottles...it was trashed.
They have done a wonderful job with that place (at least from the pictures). You guys are lucky.
Personally I lived in Westport and then 61st and Ward Parkway (Brookside Area). Loved it.
Detroit Mick 03-20-2002, 07:45 AM Any current students able to comment on pros and cons on the sites for the 3rd year rotations?
T.A.M 03-20-2002, 06:18 PM Can any current UHS students offer some comments on the integrated curriculum?
UHS2005 03-21-2002, 09:14 AM I think the cirriculum is still to new to give any definitive answer on it's ability to prepare us for the boards. This summer the 2nd years will be the first class in the new cirriculum to test out the new structure. Personally I think that no matter how the cirriculum is presented to you you will still have to prepare yourself for the boards. Some 2nd yrs took the kaplan course, others bought review books, others will go over notes. The nice thing the cirriculum does have is and "Integrated Medicine" section at the very end before thewy take the boards. The thought is that it will be a review of the last 2 years to help prepare for the boards. Personally i like the genesis program. It has its down side like all programs, but it is generally a step in the right direction. Of course we will see about that after boards.
Ronda 03-21-2002, 02:38 PM HI future classmates. Congrats on your acceptance. I'm looking forward to meeting each of you.
I think I will be heading to KC in early to middle July. I am personally thinking on living in the city of Independence b/c it is a nice city, not too far from the school, and for those of you who have kids the school system is great! As for Overland Park the commute would probably be terrible so I would steer clear of that.
I am currently looking for a roomate so if anyone is a non-smoker who loves cats we should talk.
Bye for now
Ronda
Gretchen 03-21-2002, 03:37 PM This is my first time checking out the SDN and i just need to use it to vent a little frustration.
The other day i went to my doctor to have him fill out the health forms i need to enter UHS. he's always been someone who has discouraged me from entering the medical profession. he doesn't like his job, and in my opinion, therefore doesn't think anyone else would enjoy it. he's been this way for as long as i can remember-that's not what bugs me.
when he found out i was going to an osteopathic school he asked me why. i simply told him that it was what i felt in my heart. i interviewed at two MD schools and two DOs and found my home-i hope-at UHS. i was raised in a family that believed in reflexology and rolfing. he seemed to think i was just filling him with bs. he of course asked me how my grades were. typical. isn't is possible to choose an osteopathic school purely based on one's beliefs? i truely believe that osteopathic medicine is what i want to practice.
anyway, enough venting. just wondering if anyone else has come across situations like this one where you have to defend your choice to go to DO school. I know that many students do apply to DO schools because they don't have the mcat scores for MD-but i'm sure there are plenty of you out there who feel the way i do.
remember it's not the degree that makes the doctor!!
i look forward to meeting the class of 2006. see you in august!
solie 03-21-2002, 04:17 PM Hi Gretchen,
I'm sorry to hear about your experience with your doctor. It seems to me, though, that he would have also made some unkind remarks had you decided to attend an MD school instead. I've run into quite a few doctors as well who really don't like what they do and discouraged me from entering the profession. I realized, though, that all of them had been in medicine a long, LONG time (i.e. were really OLD) and were used to the way (and the $$$) medicine was when they started out. It's a different system today, and just because they wouldn't necessarily "do it all over again" today, doesn't mean they should discourage others from doing it.
If he really was just opposed to you becomming a DO...well, I doubt there would be much you could do to change his opinion--he seems very set in his ways. The good thing is that there are fewer and fewer of these "anti-DO" MDs around as time goes on and as people become more educated. I'm glad you've decided to go to the school that "fits" you, and haven't heeded to the pressures of those who know nothing about our future profession. :)
One good thing about there being very few DOs in Canada is that instead of "Why a DO?" I get "What's a DO?" which is far less confrontational to answer. :)
drchris33 03-23-2002, 12:18 PM To respond to the why/what is a DO topic, I get that all the time and I am from Kansas, where there are lots of DOs. I work in a rural hospital as a respiratory therapist, and alot of people I treat are "frequent flyers". They have known about my quest for medical school. When I got accepted at UHS, I told them I was going to become a DO. Almost no one knows what a DO is. Some say, "Isn't that like a chiropracter?" and others, "Oh, that is a step under an MD right?" or even "I have never heard of a DO". So I have been not only defending my decision about going to the osteopathy route, but also education people in North Central Kansas about what osteopathy is all about.
Just thought I would throw that in!!
Chris
T.A.M 03-24-2002, 07:09 PM Once again, we're drifting too far down. There's another similar thread on the pre-ostepathic forum page, for those that are not a part of that one.
I'm not hearing too many takers for roomates at Bennington Ridge, so I'll have to expand. Is anyone considering, or already has secured, one of the larger suites at Century Towers?
-Tom
AnnaMags 03-26-2002, 08:02 AM Just curious how many of you are still in college to be graduating this spring. I go to Central Missouri State University presently. I'm so excited for graduation, but it seems like there is just so much to do in my classes right now. Is anyone sick of doing this work now that you know what is to come?
Also--what is everyone planning on doing during the summer. I unfortunately have to take biochemistry to fulfill the requirement. Of course, I'll be working to try to make some money. I work as a pharmacy technician.
I'm hoping to get some relaxation in this summer too though. Does anyone get to take the whole summer off?
I'm posting this in the pre-osteopathic forum also. Sorry for the repeat.
Tammy 03-26-2002, 10:55 AM Hey Chris,
I understand what you mean about defending your choice to become a DO. I'm getting a lot of that too. uugghhh! I'm thinking of carrying a VCR in my pocket so that I can play the promotional video for anyone who is not familiar with DOs. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Hang in there. You'll be the boss of those people someday. :D
Talk to you later. Good luck this weekend finding an apartment. If you find a good one, reserve two apartments! ha! ha!
Freeeedom! 03-26-2002, 11:10 AM It is very likely you will have to explain your choice to become a DO for many years to come...I had to explain my choice in residency interviews (I am going to an allopathic residency). But you get used to it. Most people are POORLY educated regarding the topic of Osteopathic Medicine (especially older MD's and nurses of all varieties)...so it is up to you to show that DO's are not only AS GOOD as MD's but in many ways, far superior.
drhillary 03-26-2002, 12:18 PM Dear Gretchen,
As others have also posted, answering the question of "Why DO?" is part of the education we as potential DOs are called on to spread. Being from the Boston area & surrounded by MDs (& potential MDs) everywhere from BU, 'Hahvahd', Tufts, etc... I find once I clearly define and support my decision, they are often taken aback, unaware that there (a) are other options and/or (b) people still exist who want to practice medicine and TOUCH their patients. Good luck to all in our quest to educate ourselves & others! I look forward to meeting all of you in August!

solie 03-26-2002, 03:39 PM Hi AnnaMags--
I can totally sympathize with you--I'm taking the genetics credit right now. :(
I'm also looking for work to make a little bit of money before school starts, too. I'd LOOOOOOVE to have the summer off to just do a whole bunch of nothing before school starts, though! I've been reading on other threads about how people are already getting a jump on studying anatomy and stuff, and I think they are out of their minds! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
It seems strange to be talking about the Summer--it just started snowing again here...
Ronda 03-26-2002, 07:27 PM Hi everyone-
Well I hope everything is well with each of you. This summer seems so far away and yet so close at the same time. Anna I'm doing biochem. right now. Today our lab lasted a wonderful 6hrs. Good luck in that this summer. I'm very fortunate and won't be finishing anything up. I will be working 2 jobs though which is almost worst in someways.
Take care everyone and good luck to those still in school with projects, test, etc.
Ronda
ld106588 03-27-2002, 10:17 AM I thought that I would take the time to introduce myself to some of my future classmates. My name is Leigh Ann and I recently found out about my acceptance to UHS. I graduated from Henderson State University in Arkansas last December with a B.S. in biology. Since that time I have been working as a pharmacy tech. I am thinking of moving to Kansas City the first week in August...it doesn't take me long to get situated. I am pretty sure that I want to live in Century Towers...so if anyone is looking for a roomate...let me know...maybe we can work something out. Well...I guess that's about it for now...see you guys in the fall!!
EUROdocMOM 03-27-2002, 01:35 PM Hey there, I am also fulfilling the Genetics requirement right now! Is UHS the only school that has Genetics as a pre-req?
Good luck with biochem, it's not as hard as I though it would be. I am hoping the same holds true for genetics.
I am working up until I go to school as a clinical trials assistant for a major pharm. company, and I have seen how many DO's are out there! Tons of internal med. and endocrinologists! The very specialties I would love to be myself! I get more exicted about becoming a DO everyday.
Is anyone elso out there a medical TV show junkie? Discovery Health Network, TLC, and Doctor's Diaries, just to name a few?
drchris33 03-27-2002, 01:40 PM Euro--
I too am fulfilling my Genetics pre-req right now. I am not doing as well as I should be. Ever since I received my acceptance letter, I haven't hardly studied a bit. Genetics is not that interesting of a course to me.
As far as a medical TV junkie.....guilty!!! I don't get TLC, I wish I did so bad. I watch every medical show that I can. I have to admit, I am an ER freak, although I do know it isnt always accurate. I have every episode on tape.
Anyway, good luck with genetics and see ya this fall!!
Chris <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />
Tammy 03-27-2002, 05:29 PM Hey everyone!
I'm taking biochem right now...online! Chris told me how much he loved it, but I can't figure it out. I so wish I had a live instructor to teach this to me face-to-face.
Did anyone else take it online?
And as far as the med shows...I love 'em. Especially ER and TLC's Trauma: Life in the ER.
Talk to you later!
T.A.M 03-27-2002, 07:34 PM What, TV? Who has time to watch TV? I have been so busy at work lately that the very idea of spending much time in front of the tube is unthinkable. Sleep is too valuable!
This summer, I'm taking the advice of many before me and I plan to do absolutely nothing resembling work or studying. My mind and body need a refresher. I don't know what I'm looking forward to more: starting school at long last or the month and a half of spare time I'll have to lounge around like a bum.
k_boehler 03-29-2002, 07:16 AM Anna:
Hi, I go to CMSU too. I was accepted in early March and am really excited about attending UHS. I think their may be another CMSU alumni there (Sherry Tate), she interviewed the same day I did. Well have a great summer and I look forward to meeting everyone in August.
Karen.
EUROdocMOM 03-29-2002, 03:07 PM The hour of TLC's Trauma: Life in the ER is too good to miss! Also, last week the show that followed was "Maternity Ward", filmed in St. Lukes (I think that was the name) in Shawnee Mission! I really don't watch that much TV, but when I do it's medical shows!
Is anyone else applying for the HPSP? I am wondering how long it is before we know if we have it?
As for distance education classes, I will take my Epidemiology final this Tuesday. I started this class overseas and it was way easier than I thought. I am taking Genetics through distance ed, too. I think biochem would be really hard, though the internet, though.
AnnaMags 03-29-2002, 03:53 PM To Karen:
I had heard that you were interviewing in late February from Steven G. Congratulations on your acceptance. I know it has been a long time coming for you.
UHS must really like CMSU students. Go Mules! haha.
What are you planning on doing this summer? And where do you plan on living?
T.A.M 03-29-2002, 04:21 PM Eurodocmom,
It took about 3 weeks after the selection board met before I learned that I got the scholarship. This was back in October, and I heard it takes longer later in the year. Good luck to you though!
BamaAlum 03-31-2002, 05:15 PM Bump....
Ronda 03-31-2002, 10:13 PM Hi Everyone-
I hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend. I know I enjoyed the time off.
Is anyone still looking for a roommate for next year? If you're a non-smoker we should talk.
As for the Medical shows I must admit I'm a junkie too. Lately though it's been tough to have time to see them.
Take Care everyone
Ronda
drchris33 04-01-2002, 09:31 AM Hello future classmates--
Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend. My family and I journeyed up to St. Joe Missouri for Easter (sister in-laws). Anyway, another sister-in-law of mine got me some newspapers, advertising places to live. I was so incredibly depressed on how expensive it is to live up there. I am going to go up next month some time, and just take about three days, exploring all the towns surrounding UHS, like Gladstone, Raytown, Liberty, etc. If I get any helpful or meaningful info, I will be sure to share it with you all!!
Have a great week!!
Chris
Tammy 04-01-2002, 03:36 PM I say we collectively rent a huge building and start our own commune! ha! ha!
I'm with you Chris...I don't know how I am going to afford to live since I will have to get a 2 BR apartment or house for my son and me. I will either have to take extra loans or get a job. uugghh!!!
drchris33 04-01-2002, 05:37 PM My vote is for extra loans......I am not planning on working at all, at least at first.
Hopefully I can be job free for a year or so!!!!!!
<img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />
UHS2005 04-02-2002, 02:35 PM Let me just tell you that your not gonna want to get a job. Whatever free time you do have you will want to cherish.
Qafas 04-02-2002, 05:36 PM Hi Everyone,
I recently got my acceptance to UHS, and then I discovered this site - it is absolutely awesome! I already feel like I am a part of the medical school community, and I literally spent all day yesterday just reading through various threads on here.
Now, I am not sure if I will end up at UHS, since I still have a few other schools to hear from which are higher on my priority list, but as days pass UHS is becoming more and more real. Having read through some of the comments made by several current UHS students, I must say that I am feeling pretty good about the school; I think it will be wonderful to meet you all in August and finally set upon this journey that my wife and I have so eagerly been awaiting. What an absolutely fabulous feeling!!!
To all of you who have already been accepted, at UHS or elsewhere, I would just like to say congratulations......I know how you feel. And to those who are still waiting, I know how you feel, too. Just keep the hope up and keep working hard.
God bless everyone!
T.A.M 04-03-2002, 07:39 PM To be honest, I have nothing to add, but I don't want our thread to get pushed down too far.
For the 10th million time I'll try again. Is anyone who's thinking of living at Bennington Ridge looking for a roomate?
UHS2005 04-03-2002, 09:55 PM There are better places out there than Bennington Ridge. Avoid it if you can. Its not quiet and the ladies in the office have got major attitude if you every have a problem.
EUROdocMOM 04-04-2002, 08:27 AM My aunt from KC just sent me a newspaper clipping of some of the local DO's practicing in the KC area that are UHS grads (one DO who works with stem cells). It was pretty impressive. I have also found quite a few DO oncologists, endocrinologists and surgeons on the AMA doctor search website. Just a little factiod for those worried that DO's are only found in the FP, IM, and Pediatric world.
Personally, I think OMM & ostoe principles would be a great benefit when working with long term illnesses like cancer, diabetes, etc.
Anyone else with any thoughts or interest in these fields?
dje4927 04-05-2002, 03:42 PM I interviewed at UHS on jan 23 (I was the one from St.Louis w/ my dad). I was acceepted on Feb. 1 and very excited about attending. I graduated from Truman State University in 1999 with Honors in Biology. I will be living in Century Towers. I just wanted to touch base with some of my future colleagues and wish the UHS Class of 2006 congratulations on their acceptance.
drchris33 04-05-2002, 05:00 PM dje4927--
I too interviewed on Jan 23rd (I was the one who talked with you the end of the day about interviewing at DMU). Congrats on acceptance and going to UHS! I am very eager to get going. I will probably be living in a surrounding town, since I am married and have kids. Welcome to the class and we will see you in August!!
Chris :D
T.A.M 04-07-2002, 11:40 AM Some questions: Has anyone out there who plans to live in Century Towers and needs a roomate secured one of the large suites? Or,
Is there anyone who wants to live in Century Towers that has almost no furniture?
I'm asking because I want to live around my fellow UHS students but the rooms at Century Towers are too small for the stuff I have unless I can get one of the large suites or unless my roomate has pracically no furniture of their own (bedroom furniture exempted, of course). Bennington Ridge seemed the perfect fit, size-wise, but nobody seems interested in living there this year. If you fit into one of those two categories, send me a private message, please! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
drchris33 04-08-2002, 02:29 PM Hello future classmates--
I was just wondering what kind of scholarships, if any, you all are applying for/receiving? There really isn't that much out there besides the armed forces and the health corp. I applied for the Kansas Osteopathy scholarship as well as the Arthur Miller Fund, both included in a UHS packet I received.
I was just wondering how you all were financing our tiny price of school :)
Chris
Freeeedom! 04-08-2002, 04:23 PM quick question for any 1st or 2nd year UHS student out there...
I graduate from UHS on June 2nd, and arrive the last week in may. In true nerd fashion, I may want to catch a path lecture...what is the schedule like?
dje4927 04-08-2002, 04:43 PM I have not seen too much in the way of schlorships, in fact for Chris to have found two was a lot. I found little if anything in the packet the school sent me. It looks like I will be using a lot of loans. As far as living at Century Towers, I will be living in a one bedroom apartment.
dje4927 04-08-2002, 04:46 PM I should of checked my spelling on my last post.I meant scholarships not sclorships.
drchris33 04-09-2002, 09:53 AM Hey all--
I am just curious if any of you are interested in weight lifting/bodybuilding? I am trying to get back in the routine of working out, and was curious if anyone will be in search of a workout partner? I usually work out alone but it is better to lift with a buddy! Just let me know if you are!!

I walked in front of his projector at the beginning, and the whole class turned around and heckled me as Erf called me to the front of the auditorium. I was a deer in the headlights until I realized what was going on then I scurried out the door and watched the lecture from the projection booth. Don't ever obstruct Erf's projector!!
EUROdocMOM 04-11-2002, 03:23 PM YYYYEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!! I just found out I got the HPSP scholarship (speaking of scholarship programs). I am sssoooo happy!
Also on the scholarship note...
I got a package from UHS with a pile of scholarships to investigate a few weeks ago. Did you get this?
Hey, did anyone get the UHS Communicator? HPSPers did you see the articles on the aerospace medicine dudes? That was pretty interesting.
Also, medical TV nerds, another new show on TLC called Code Blue. It was on Monday nights @ 8 I think.
Freeeedom! 04-11-2002, 03:31 PM thanks drewdo, yep I have seen the lecture. Good luck in your second year...it'll be fun.
Qafas 04-15-2002, 01:01 AM Hi Everyone,
I just got alt-listed by WesterU/COMP. And, so, I have fallen in love with UHS all over again! :p While a part of me still wants to go to COMP (since california is home), I think I am ready to face the reality that this is the thread where I belong, and not "COMP class of 2006." As such, here I am, hoping to make the acquaintance of my classmates. Please feel free to get in touch, either right here on SDN or through email. I am looking forward to making some solid, life-long friends while in med school.
with regards
drchris33 04-16-2002, 12:52 PM I just thought I would post a little something since no one has for a while. Seems like since they revamped the SDN, people haven't used it as much.....maybe just a coincidence. Anyhow, hope your classes are going well......Only about a month to go. I am so tired of undergrad classes, it isn't even funny!!!
Well better go! See you in August!
Chris
EUROdocMOM 04-18-2002, 03:25 PM I'm thinking of moving out to KC on July 1st, and taking the weeks prior to starting school to get to know the area and meet neighbors, etc.
Does anyone else have moving plans yet? Has anyone looked for house rentals, or is everyone set on the apartment thing?
Qafas 04-19-2002, 01:04 AM I think I will be moving around the beginning of August. And, for me, its definitely going to be an apt., probably somewhere in north KC. I drove around that area when I was there for my interview, and it seemed fairly nice. The traffic didn't seem all that bad either. I think I will take another trip sometime during the summer to actually find a place and get the lease taken care of.
If anyone has any specific info on apt. complexes in north KC, I would love to hear. Bennington ridge keeps popping up - but just a quick look through some websites shows many other places that seem quite a bit better for about the same price.
T.A.M 04-19-2002, 08:11 PM Qafas,
Send me a private message if you're interested in Bennington Ridge.
drchris33 04-22-2002, 07:06 AM I think I am going to start looking for places next month. As soon as finals are over, I am going to make a two day trip or so and just drive around the surrounding towns of UHS within about a 20-25 mile radius and check things out. I have to find at least a three bedroom house, since I have six people in the family. I did find some real estate agencies on the net in the feist, so I am going to start giving them a call fairly soon.
I am hoping to move around June or so but might not be until July.
Is anyone planning on working during school? I am going to work all summer and then hopefully not have to work during the year. Just depends on funding!
Chris
drchris33 04-24-2002, 03:47 PM Just posting another message.....
I want our message board to look like Western/COMP having 1.5326 million posts!!!!!
Keep them coming!!
Chris
Tammy 04-25-2002, 03:01 PM We were falling way down on the SDN list...thought I would bump us to the top again.
Any new thoughts on housing for anyone? I'm going to make a trip in May. I have a big dog & two cats, which is making it very hard to find an apartment.
Here's a wild question...has anyone ever thought of buying a manufactured house? They sell cheap. It seems cheaper than the $700-800 rent (and I could keep my pets.)
See you all soon!!!
Tammy
drchris33 04-25-2002, 09:25 PM Tammy--
Good luck on your housing search. Rent out there is insane huh? I have looked into some on the net, and it is unreal. A good website for houses is <a href="http://www.home4rent.com." target="_blank">www.home4rent.com.</a> They update everyday. Currently there are about 30 some houses on the Kansas side and about 10 on the Missouri side; I also have a list of realtors I have obtained if you are interested.
As for my housing situation, mine may have changed a bit. My wife is wanting to stay living where we are now until we get some of our bills paid off. So I might be living with some in-laws in Shawnee. I am not crazy about the idea at all......I will miss my wife and kids so much. But if it is the way it is going to be, I guess I will make due.
The only positive thing would be I would be able to concentrate more on studying, as far as not having as much noise in my area. That is the only bonus, along with not very many bills. So who knows??
By the way, are you still interested in being workout partners?? Just wondering!
Chris
doctordes 04-25-2002, 09:32 PM Hello everyone! Just wanted to drop a congratulations to everyone in the class of 2006. I'm so excited to get started. Congratulations to everyone, and does anyone plan on living in Century Towers or am I the only one? Let me know... :D
Tammy 04-26-2002, 08:24 AM Hey Chris,
I will check out the website. I'm really not sure at all what I am going to do about housing. Thanks!
Hey, could you e-mail me your address again? I have the insurance info in my office so that I can mail it, but I can't find your address! (I know it is in Clyde...)
I would like to be work-out partners. I need someone who will make me go. I love to work-out, but it's so easy to blow it off for other things. I started going to a gym with my friend, but she goes at 5:30 am, so that didn't last long. (I'm not a morning-person.) Since I quit going with her, I haven't been there in 6 weeks. uugghh! I need to find someone here who goes right after work. If I go home first, I never get back out. (Lazy!!) When we toured UHS, there were people working out in the morning. Maybe on a break? It would be perfect to work out while at school & before going home. Count me in!
rellik 04-26-2002, 02:11 PM Hey guys,
Congrats on the acceptance to UHS. I'm sure you will enjoy getting acclimated to med school life as much as I have!
I didn't have the time to read through all the postings, but just wanted to let you all know that if you have any questions about KC, UHS, med school, etc... you can feel free to email me. I'll include my address at the bottom.
My name is Steve and I'm a first year student. I'm 29 yrs old, married with a 20 mo. old. Oh yeah, I have a 100 lb. black lab to boot. We live on the KS side of the KC area.
This message if for all you that are married or have fiance's or serious boy/girlfrieds that will be comming out with you. In my view, the most important aspect of acclimating to med school is making sure your significant other is supported. Afterall, they will be assuming a large amount of the load of daily life like paying bills, etc.. Be sure that you do EVERYTHING you can to involve them in your medschool life. It seems to the secret to surviving the first year (for atleast the married guys in the class).
One way to do this is to let your significant others know about the SAA. They are a organization made up of mostly wifes and girlfriends (sorry guys!) of students. It is not limited to women only, but the membership just happens to be 100% women. It would scare me away :) My wife is new incoming president of the group and would really enjoy the opportunity to speak with your significant other. Please feel free to forward her email address for correspondence!
Well, If I can do anything to help, just let me know.
We can be contacted at:
scoats@uhs.edu

drchris33 04-27-2002, 07:42 AM Rellik-
Thanks for the advice about the spouse network. My wife and I have been married for almost three years. They have been pretty tough, but I think we are getting better. Before we were married, I emphasized countless numbers of times that I want to be a doctor and it will be tough for a long time. During my first year of pre-recs (Post Bachelors; I decided on med school after I graduated) we fought alot, her saying all I do is work and study; but I re-emphasized everything to her. Eventually she got better.
Now, it appears that we might not be living together during at least the first semester. We have a lot of bills to catch up on, and we currently live in a small town, so her thinking is that she will remain there with our children (4 of them) and get caught up on the bills and then move after the debt is paid off. The main debt is a credit card debt I accumulated during undergrad. So I am not really thrilled on the idea, especially because I will miss her and my kids, but we will do what needs to be done. We live approx 2-2.5 hours away from Kansas City so I can possibly get away for a weekend once in a while.
Just thought I would throw that in. The only positive aspect I could find was that I will have more quiet time to study, which will be nice!!

T.A.M 04-27-2002, 08:51 PM Activity seems to have nearly died on our little thread lately. Anyway, I would just like to reinterate for the umpteenth time -is anyone looking for a roomate? Pleas contact me by privat message if so.
drchris33 04-28-2002, 06:41 AM I know what you mean TAM; I have been trying to post more often, just so that we can try to compete with Western/COMP and all the other bigger threads. Everyone must be buckling down for finals or something. All I have to worry about it to pass genetics with a C. No problem.
Well I will check back later; hope to see your posts!

drhillary 04-28-2002, 11:41 PM Hey everyone,
I wish all of you still in classes the best of luck on all of your finals & those not in school lots of vacation time before we get to KCMO in August!! I was just counting on the calendar-- 15 weeks until orientation begins!! I am so excited to meet all of you! SEE YOU THERE!
~Hillary
PS- I AM planning on living in Century Towers & am also ARMY HPSP-- congrats EUROdocMOM! <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />
solie 04-29-2002, 02:17 PM I'll be in Century Towers, too. :)
Have you seen the web page for it yet? There are a couple of pics on it.
<a href="http://www.centurytowerskc.com" target="_blank">Century Towers</a>
Does anyone know what's going to be happening during orientation?
LovelyRita 04-29-2002, 05:38 PM Hey Gang!!
Congratulations on being in the UHS Class of 2006. I'm also in the class, and so far, looking forward to every minute of it!! I'm non-trad, 29 years old, and going back to school will be like a breath of fresh air! I'm REALLY looking forward to meeting all of you guys, too!
I'll be living in Century Towers, along with a lot of you. I've got a single (sorry TAM). I like the fact that the apts are brand new. I have questions about the neighborhood...so feel free to send me private email with explicit details. I'll be coming from suburb of Cleveland Ohio.
Again, congrats to everyone....we are the new generation of docs!!

Tammy 04-30-2002, 08:56 AM Hi everyone! Just bumping up to the top again.
It looks like my son & I will be living in my car! ha! ha! Actually I need to get up there in a couple of weeks to try to find a place to live. Stephen, a first-year student, recommended Prairie Village for those students with families. The rent is fairly reasonable for a house plus the school district is more desirable as well.
Just thought I would pass that along.
Also, I received information from State Farm about health insurance. You can get a single plan for about $75 per month, which includes physician visits, hospitalization, etc. It does not include prescriptions, but they do have a service where you can get a several month supply for $5, I believe. If anyone needs more information, let me know and I will find the agent's name for you. (It's at home...I'm at work.)
I can't believe the time is almost here to begin. WOW!
See you soon!
Tammy
AnnaMags 04-30-2002, 11:38 AM Just wanted to pop in to say hi to everyone. I haven't posted in a while but have been checking in periodically to see what everyone is up to.
I'm also interested in what the registration and orientation will entail. I'm sure we'll have a lot to take in.
This is my last week of classes and then finals next week. This is my easiest semester so far. I'm actually bored...heaven forbid. Can you believe it?
One other question--are you all going to get stethoscopes and such before starting school?
LovelyRita 04-30-2002, 11:42 AM Hi guys...(Tammy)
I've gotten state farm info also. I just got a big packet from Blue Cross Blue Shield the other day. I'm glad to be getting this info. I haven't decided who I'm going with yet...but I might check out the deal you're talking about, Tammy. As always , there's much to think about!
Ciao!
LovelyRita 04-30-2002, 11:48 AM Hey Anna...
I have questions too. Like here's a stupid one. What kind of notebooks/school supplies do we need? Or do we just get what we feel comfortable with? Does anyone have any advice? Someone in admissions told me that we're supposed to be assigned a buddy. Haven't heard from my buddy yet. I don't think it's too early to start thinking about this stuff...I'd like to buy things while I still have an income! I wonder what books we MUST buy?
Take care, Anna! :)
drchris33 04-30-2002, 12:57 PM Hey guys..
Glad to see so many posts!! I have a general idea on the answers to some of your questions:
As far as the books go, I have been in contact with a first year and he said to wait until you get to school and speak with a second year about what books to buy. According to him, he hardly ever uses books....all of the profs have powerpoint presentations and everyone gets a copy of the notes from them. But if you wanna get books, he recommends a review type or board prep book for the various subjects.
He also told me about supplies, as in where to get them. There is a place in Topeka, called Medventure, and this is where he got his supplies (ie stethoscope, otoscope/opthalmoscope, etc). I already have a good steth, since I work in respiratory therapy. I have a Littmann Cardiology III. I got it off the net. If you buy them in a store, they run about 180-200 bucks, but you can search the net and get them for about 120, if you want the type I have. Littmann is the way to go in steths. They do have some others for under $100.
As far as orientation, to my understanding, we have a lot of activities on campus, I would assume to get us acquainted with one another. Also I think we go out into the community and help pick up trash and paint houses and such. I am not sure on this but that is what I understand.
Hope this helps guys. I have already purchased a table for OMM off of ebay. It was normally 600 bucks....got it for 200. Type in massage table in the search if you are interested.
Email me if I can be of any help!! Can't wait to see you all in August!!!!
Chris
Tammy 04-30-2002, 02:51 PM Mary (or anyone),
You probably have the same info from State Farm that I do, but if you want me to, I will send you a copy of the brochure they sent me. (They sent several.) Just e-mail me your address. My e-mail is olsontamara@hotmail.com.
I don't have the rep's name with me at work, but I'll try to remember to post from home tonight with the contact info.
I think it was about $75/mo. for coverage. My COBRA plan through work would be around $300/mo., so I was thrilled with this one. Did BC/BS have good info? I requested information, but I've been playing phone tag with the rep.
Take care everyone!
jrfromks 04-30-2002, 04:56 PM Has anyone received their financial aid letter yet? If so, approximately how long did it take from the time you sent in your applications until you received your letter? I sent mine off a couple weeks ago. I guess I'm just getting really anxious to get started with med school. It's going to be an exciting time for all of us.
Tammy 05-01-2002, 06:49 PM Hi everyone.
The information I received from State Farm about Student Health Insurance came from Nikki Lawson & Kevin Hale. They can be reached at 913-649-8111.
If you are 17-29, the rates vary from $360-770 per year depending on your deductible. For 30-39-year-olds, the rates vary from $560-1110 per year. Without giving you the entire brochure, these are the highlights:
* Choose your own doctors
* Includes:
* Office Visits
* Surgery
* X-ray & Lab
* Semi-private Room & Board
* Emergency Care
Just thought I would share the info. I imagine having health insurance will be a requirement for attending school.
Take care,
Tammy
LovelyRita 05-02-2002, 05:58 AM Dear Tammy,
Thanks for the info! I love the fact that my HI is going to increase by $200 a year next year!
I'm getting more excited to come to UHS every day. I got a late offer from another school and have some deep thinking to do. I won't think too hard, I don't want to burn up any more brains are needed! I'll need them for the next four years and beyond!
I haven't gotten my FA letter yet. I'm not TOO worried, yet. I want things to go as smooth as possible!! Who needs the added stress? The thing that will kill me is that I have had a full time job...$$$ for the last several years. So they probably figure I should have saved $180,000 to go to school.
I want to do my best when I'm there...I'll probably be the class nerd, being older! (Only chronologically, mind you!) This forum is nice, thanks everyone!
drchris33 05-02-2002, 07:14 AM Hey everyone--
Man I have only one week of classes left. I have three class periods, then two finals, which neither are comprehensive, and I am home free!! I have my genetics final on the 13th and my Intro to Archaeology final on 16th then finished! yes, I took archaeology just in case med school didn't pan out, I could become a professional digger and excavator :)
August is just around the corner! See you all then!
Chris
Tammy 05-02-2002, 03:37 PM Mary,
Congrats on receiving more than one offer. I hope you'll go to UHS because I am 30 and apparently you are close behind! ha! ha!
Chris,
I received an e-mail from Century Towers a couple of days ago. I will try to find it in my deleted files and e-mail it to you. I'm sure it has prices in it.
Everyone,
See you soon!
- Tammy
drchris33 05-02-2002, 04:23 PM Tammy--
Wow! I didn't realize you were 30. You hold your age very well. I thought you were younger than me (25).
Talk to you all soon!
Chris
LovelyRita 05-02-2002, 04:40 PM Hmmmmmmmmm.....to be 25 again...... That's alright, Tammy and I are mah-ture! (that's what I'm referred as: a mature student...vs. the "immature" (?) student?)
Congratulations Chris on being DONE!!!! I can't believe August is right around the corner. I have so much to do.
Still haven't heard anything about a "buddy" yet. Maybe it's just a rumor. Besides I have buddies already! (YOU guys!) <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" />
Old Yeller 05-02-2002, 11:06 PM Hello all, I've been reading our thread for a while now and it seems that we have a real sense of community goin' on here. I got my acceptance letter a couple of months ago, but I guess I'm kinda shy about introducing myself. But, I feel like I already know some of you from what you've been posting. Excited about the coming school year. Chris, I think I'm looking for a work-out partner also, so perhaps we'll meet up sometime. All right, LATES!
drchris33 05-02-2002, 11:15 PM Yeller--
Sounds good.....what type of lifting are you into? Bodybuilding....powerlifting.....? Just curious! I agree with Yeller by him saying we have a community here. Everyone is very open and kind and willing to help anyone out!
We will be with each other for at least the first two years of our medical career, so we might as well get to know each other!
Later
Chris
LovelyRita 05-03-2002, 05:08 AM Congratulations Old Yeller!
This site has been very helpful in getting me pumped up for med school.
Has anyone gotten the book on the first page of SDN called "Becoming a Doctor....building a career as a physician?" If so was it a good book?
Have a great day everyone!
Old Yeller 05-03-2002, 06:56 AM Thanks for the welcome guys! hopefully, more of our class would find their way to this forum. For Chris and his work-out crew, I guess I just lift in order to stay fit. I do use alot of freewights though. Oh, I have another question, I know that the priority deadline for the financial aid was May 1, but I haven't sent out my FAFSA on the web yet. Is this potentially a bad thing? This is my first time applying for financial aid, so I'm kinda clueless. Any information would be great. Thanks!
Tammy 05-03-2002, 07:38 AM Chris,
You're sweet! If you thought I was under 25-years-old, you must have thought really bad thoughts about me though since I have a 12-year-old! ha! ha! hhmmm...25-12 = 13! <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" /> Thank goodness I wasn't that young!!!
Glad you spoke up, Old Yeller. This is a great site. The only bad thing is, I'll probably never call anyone by their correct name! You'll always be Old Yeller to me! ha! ha!
- Tammy
drchris33 05-03-2002, 07:43 AM Yeller--
As far as the financial aid goes, I don't know much about it but I think that it may take longer to get your award letter since it is after the deadline. I do not know this for a fact, but that is my assumption.
I would just call UHS and ask financial aid. They would be the best source. I would probably get the FAFSA done as soon as possible!!
August gets closer every day! Only 102 days left till the first day of orientation!!
Chris <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />
drchris33 05-03-2002, 09:02 AM Here are a couple of good books to read before med school......
1. House of God--very good book
2. Learning to Play God
3. Intern Blues
I saw a few posts back someone asked about reading a book. These are a few that I have read, that I would recommend. Very interesting....kind of gives us a perspective, although most of them are at least 20 years old

LovelyRita 05-04-2002, 09:03 AM Here's a good one, Chris,
"Touch of Life" by Robert Fulford, DO.
Congratulations to UHS Class of 2006!
I haven't been admitted to UHS... yet (?being optimistic =P), but was looking for some advice from UHS-ers... I recently interviewed at the school and absolutely, positively LOVED it! I just received notification that I am being considered an alternate and just wanted to see if anyone had some advice/words of wisdom for me... (Old Yeller, Thank you... I will work on a letter of intent!) Hmmm... I guess kind of specifically I'm wondering if ANYONE knows of ANYONE on the alternate list for UHS and... was ANYONE admitted to UHS from the alternate list? and, any other thoughts would be appreciated also... =)
Thank you kindly...
Tammy 05-04-2002, 01:09 PM Good luck, PCS. Hope to see you in August!
drchris33 05-04-2002, 02:36 PM I got an insurance question for all you UHS'ers:
Is there a separate form to fill out for financial aid to allow us to get extra money for insurance, and did I read this correctly, we are allotted up to $125/month for insurance? I was just wondering.....I have been checking out various plans, and I need to know if I need to fill out any extra paperwork.
Thanks!!
Chris
Our thread is getting bigger......look out Western!! :)
ld106588 05-05-2002, 09:05 PM Are there any Arkansas residents that applied for the Arkansas Health Education Grant? If so, have you heard anything from UHS yet?
natureboy503 05-05-2002, 09:10 PM Hey everyone! I just got my acceptance letter to UHS on Friday :D . I am so pumped, now I can quit wondering what I will be doing in the fall. I am going to call UHS and get to work on my financial aid ASAP! I hope it isn't too late. I look forward to seeing you all in the fall. By the way, has anyone else gotten accepted that interviewed on April 26th?
Old Yeller 05-05-2002, 09:17 PM Congrats NatureBoy!!! Hope to see ya in class! <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />
drhillary 05-06-2002, 11:36 AM Dear natureboy,
CONGRATS~~ Isn't that a great feeling! Keep in touch & we'll all see you in August!
Dear pcs,
Keep your chin up-- we'd love to see you in August too!
~drhillary
drhillary 05-06-2002, 11:51 AM Hey UHSers (& potential UHSers),
Have you guys checked out the "Medschool Booyeah" t-shirt???
If you haven't, here's the link: <a href="http://www.cafepress.com/studentdoc" target="_blank">web page</a>
I think it would be cool if those of us from SDN had these shirts & wore them at some point during orientation (maybe with our 'real names' & SDN names on our nametags)?? It's just an idea, so let me know what you guys think....
:D :D
~drhillary
Tammy 05-06-2002, 12:53 PM OK...dumb question.
What does Booyah mean?
LovelyRita 05-06-2002, 01:01 PM I'm with Tammy...what does booyah mean?
Natureboy, I cried when I got the letter! Congratulations. See ya in August!
PCS, you're in my thoughts....hope you get your wish.
OUT!
This is just another example of why i think UHS is AWESOME. Thank you for your thoughts... and, I'm really happy for all of you who have gotten in already. I called the admissions office today and got some encouragement there... got into DMU today, so I'm thankful that I will be a doctor in the near future. I think I need to be patient and pro-active with UHS and I so look forward to meeting/working/chilling with all of you in the future.
oopz... so i don't jinx myself... lemme rewind and reword...
i so so look forward to having the opportunity to meet/work/chill with all of you in the near future! *smile*
Tammy 05-06-2002, 03:13 PM PCS,
We're all pulling for you. Congrats on DMU. I've heard wonderful things about it as well, but I hope to see you in August at UHS. You'll have to get a nametag with PCS on it though...I feel like I know everyone here, but I'm not going to know a soul (except Chris who I sat with at the interview) when I walk into the room. I agree with whoever said we need nametags with our screen names on the first day of class! (Mine won't be difficult, of course! Boring screen name...)
Keep us posted!!!
- Tammy
Old Yeller 05-06-2002, 08:50 PM Hey gang, how are you guys doing? It's been a while since I last checked in with ya's. I'm in the middle of finals right now. I have one tomorrow at 8am. Not too excited about it. I'm pretty unmotivated to study. I think that's the common thing that we're all going through right now. Well, at least I should try some more tonite before I go to bed. All right, lates. Hope you guys are doing well...
drchris33 05-06-2002, 10:01 PM I'm with Yeller......I have been so unmovitvated to study ever since I received my letter of acceptance. I think I will end up with C's in both my classes this semester.....and I don't even care!!!!! All I need is a C in Genetics and that is all.
To me, Boo-Yah means like "Hell Yeah" or "Kick Ass"; so the T-shirt is saying.....Kick ass, I'm in med school!!!!
Tammy, you should have had your screen name as Joker, since that is how you referred to yourself at the interview!!! :)
The days are getting closer now.....
I am glad this thread has been going the way it has! I feel like I know alot of you already.....I think we should were our screen names on tags.....great idea!
Well that's all for now...
Chris
drchris33 05-06-2002, 10:35 PM Hey gang--
I have a question/thought and wanted to run it by you all.....
I was thinking that we need to organize and put on an osteopathic medical school conference. I attended the KU Med school pre-med conference twice, and I thought it was very beneficial. To me, ours would be even better. Number one, we could sell UHS to all those in the area of Kansas and Missouri, primarily. Number two, this would be our opportunity to educate pre-med hopefuls as well as people of the community, where ever we would host it. I know a lot of you on here and other posts, have stated that you have never heard of osteopathic medicine until later in college.
To me, it would be a great opportunity. Let me know about your thoughts, reactions, and whatever on it. If it is a bad idea, let me know and I will punt it out of my head.
Thanks!!
Chris
drhillary 05-06-2002, 10:35 PM Dear UHSers,
Chris beat me to it, but basically he explained BOOYAH about as well as I could....
"Hell Yeah" and/or "Kick Ass" pretty much covers how I felt when I heard!!!
I second (or third) the remark about not being motivated to study, but the real problem lies in writing this thesis!! Best of luck to the rest of you...
~Hillary
:p
drchris33 05-06-2002, 10:43 PM I am ordering my Boo-Yah Shirt tomorrow as well as the $150,000 coffee mug.....I am a caffeine-a-holic and coffee is my friend!! We have stayed up all nights, many a night together my coffee and me......
outgolfing 05-07-2002, 12:13 AM sup everyone.....i got into UHS last week and was so excited ...that i didn't get to say hi to everyone...well, i'm sure i interviewed with some of you....give me a hollar back...and let me know your plans about apartment and stuff...are all of you staying in the apartment across the street?...well talk to you later ....my name is Vinh by the way...
"When life gets you down, grab life by the neck and choke the living daylights out of it."
Since everyone had a quote, i just thought i might as well put mine in....heheh :D
LovelyRita 05-07-2002, 06:31 AM Hi Chris, Tammy, Hillary, Vinh, pcs, Yeller, and everyone else!
This is like one of those games where you have to remember everyone's names! (hey I rhymed).
I agree that we put our screen names on the nametags. What fun!
Chris your idea sounds wonderful about the conference. Educating the community as well as pre-meds is very key.
OK, so when DO we get that FA letter?! I'm calling the school today to ask question about the computer upgrades. Do we need zip drives because we will be obtaining info that's already on a zip or because we will be obtaining so much info that we need to save it on a zip? In that case, maybe a CD burner would do as well?
So many questions.
 M.
drchris33 05-07-2002, 07:15 AM Mary-
To answer a few of your questions.....
I got a new computer back in January and I got a CD burner with mine. A first year at UHS told me they let you check out CD-ROMs from the library on about any subject you want. So it would definitely be beneficial to have one, so that you could own a lot of programs. Although, if you would not want a CD burner of your own, I could burn disks for anyone that doesn't have one. No problem.
As for the zip drive, I would get one, simply because I bet we will have a lot of info to obtain. I would only get a 100MB; that will be plenty.
I actually got my zip drive off of ebay (where I seem to get a lot of things! :) )You can find a zip drive on ebay for around 25-30 bucks, whereas they are much more expensive in a store
Anyway, that is my two cents worth!
Chris
AnnaMags 05-07-2002, 07:41 AM I'm so excited to see our numbers increasing! I'm going to start one other UHS thread so that I can keep track of every one...a roll call. Look for it in the Osteopathic Forum.
I think the idea of a premed conference and/or one for the community is a great idea! I'd love to be a part of that. I also went to KUMed's conference once in Emporia. It was very helpful. I definitely want part of my job as a DO student and future DO to be familiarizing the community and health profession on osteopathic medicine.
Anyway, glad to see our forum growing as big as the rest of them. Way to go!
Tammy 05-07-2002, 08:15 AM Hey gang,
I think we would definitely need the help & blessing of the admissions office to do the conference, but I think it is a great idea. I have a lot of experience with recruiting and speaking to high school students (as I do the marketing for a college), so I would love to help with this. (This may not be recruiting high school students, but rather college students, but I think the same principles would apply.)
Guess what?! I JUST FINISHED MY BIOCHEMISTRY FINAL!!!!
Tammy 05-07-2002, 08:23 AM I hit the wrong button...I'm back again.
Congrats Vinh! Can't wait to see you in August.
About the computer, earlier in the thread, one of the second year students said the computer was not a requirement because there are so many computer labs around campus. However, the letter was pretty specific that it was a requirement. Who knows! I'm sure it would be beneficial to have a computer with all the bells and whistles at home so you don't have to live at the campus.
If anyone gets an update on the FA letters, please post the info here. I think we're all curious when we will know how much moo-la we'll get for the first year.
As far as apartments, I'm going to KC on Monday & Tuesday of next week to look at apartments & schools for my son. We won't live near campus, but hopefully within 10-25 miles. I've heard that Park Hill & Blue Valley are good districts, so I'm going to try to find a place within one of those USDs.
Good luck everyone on your finals. The semester is almost over!!! <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />
drchris33 05-07-2002, 02:42 PM Hello everyone--
I am glad you are all into the conference idea. I just think it would be great to put on one, maybe two conferences a year, to recruit and educate students on osteopathic medicine. We will have to get together once school starts, if we have time, and figure out a game plan.
Tammy has the right idea about getting the admissions office involved. They will be one of our biggest helpers!
Anyway, post more later!
Chris
solie 05-07-2002, 02:46 PM I just wanted to check in and say Hi again to everyone.. :)
I have to agree with all those finding motivation to study hard to come by...I'm sooooo far behind in my genetics course now that it's starting to get a little less funny than it used to be. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
My final's next month, so hopefully I'll make it through. I never thought I'd be just aiming for a C in anything in my life, though! Learning anything more than that just seems like far too much to think about right now!
One quick question--does anyone know if we can get the money for our computer included in NEXT year's financial aid budget instead? I'm buying one for this year, but I won't have it in time to submit the receipt to be included for this year.
~~Danielle~~
Tammy 05-07-2002, 03:52 PM Danielle,
My understanding is that you can submit the receipt when you get it. You don't necessarily have to submit it before you receive your financial aid.
The current students made it sound like you can approach the financial aid office at any time you are in a money crunch. They made it sound like the problem was "not taking too much money" rather than "not getting enough money."
I guess we'll find out for ourselves soon. I hope this is truly the problem because my budget doesn't seem like it will fit within UHS' published budget. (I need 12 roommates in a 2 bedroom apartment...any takers? ha! ha!)
We have a storm coming and my son is nervous, so I have to get home now. Talk to y'all soon!
Tammy
EUROdocMOM 05-07-2002, 08:21 PM Hi everyone, its been a while since I've had 5 minutes to post a message! Our class seems to have grown. Is everyone still procrastinating finding housing? Things just keep coming up that are keeping me from buying a plane ticket and getting to KC!
LovelyRita 05-08-2002, 06:59 AM Dear Dr.Chris,
Thanks for the info. I called the IT dept at UHS yesterday. Zip drives/disks are required; something about the prof's can update the disks and give them back to us vs. a CD burner which they can't update (is it because they might not have a burner, that ZIP is the universal system there?). I'm not crystal clear on all of this, but I'll take their word for it. However, I would like to get a burner anyway, so maybe I'll have both. Any current UHS students who could clarify all of this for me I would appreciate it!
Fortunately I already have an Iomega slot on my laptop. I asked about the Office 2000 upgrade. It's required because documents that the prof's give us will be on 2000 or XP and if we have an old verson one might not be able to retrieve all the info if you're running an older version.
So that's all I know, which isn't much.
Have a great day!
M. :)
UHS2005 05-08-2002, 09:35 AM The zip drives are worthless. If you want to copy all the lectures so that you can bring them home and print them out then i guess you would need one. But the rest of us just print out what ever we need and call it good. I just told IT that i had an external one and they said ok. You dont need to buy one. Get a burner instead.
Are any of you proficient in html, coding, or web design? Do you want to be involved in creating the web page for your class. If you do get in touch with me personally at jabber49@aol.com and we will get you off on the right foot. Youll have all summer to make it look good.

k_boehler 05-08-2002, 10:46 AM Dr. chris and all wanting to put on a conference:
Actually UHS does have a conference set up on the same day/week (i'm not sure which) as Primary Care Day. They had a seminar, video, and a tour of the facilities. They had also set up the OMM lab for clubs, activities, etc. to get a feel for some of the things you will do as a first/second year student. It was really nice and we received a lot of good information.
A second conference might be a good idea though, b/c most of the information we received would be for students at UHS.
Just thought you might like to know UHS is doing something, we just might like to do more.
Karen.
drchris33 05-08-2002, 04:51 PM Karen--
Thanks for the info on the conference. Is the one UHS puts on, on campus? I was thinking of going somewhere neutral, like Wichita or somewhere like that, to talk to all levels of college students.
Thanks again for the info......
August is almost here!!
Chris
Mr. happy clown guy 05-08-2002, 04:55 PM chris...HAHAHA, one of those quotes are from "Real Genius"...Here's another one...Kent:"I was Hot and I was Hungry"
Anyway, to you youngsters...I am graduating, if anyone wants the books "Isserson's Guide to Getting a Residency " and "A DO's guide to getting an MD residency: DO's eat their young"
Send me a private message.
drchris33 05-09-2002, 12:18 AM Glad you liked my quote. Real Genius is a hilarious movie (for those of you who have never seen it, it is an early 80s Val Kilmer movie....go rent it today!)
Anyway, I am getting ready to hit the hay. Last day of classes tomorrow.....actually today......in like 8 hours.......it is an hour drive to school.....I am going to be tired.
Hope my little ones don't wake up tonight!!
See ya
Chris <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
LovelyRita 05-09-2002, 05:31 AM Hi UHS 2005,
Thanks for your advice. When you print out "what you need", how do you get the info if you don't use a zip? Forgive my ignorance....
Thanks!
M.
drchris33 05-09-2002, 09:05 AM Hey gang--
We are up to 8 pages!! Super!!
I just popped on here to see what was up. I am suppposed to be in class right now, but I haven't gone to my first class in two weeks!! I am very bad.
I have one more Genetics Lecture today and I am done! So excited. The final is on Monday, then an Intro to Archaeology final on Thursday, then done, done, done!!!
Talk to you all later!
Chris
k_boehler 05-09-2002, 09:20 AM The UHS Conference was held at the school. It was nice to see the school and area, b/c of how bad I had heard the area was.
I think a neutral place would also be nice, maybe even some undergraduate school fairs - I know KCOM was at ours. Just another idea.
Karen.
drchris33 05-09-2002, 09:24 AM Karen--
Yeah that was my idea, being at a undergrad school. The first year I went to KUs, it was at Emporia State University. The second year it was at Kansas State University.
The turnout was great at both conferences, as well as informative about the school, med school and so forth!
I just think more people would go osteopathic if they knew what the heck it was!
So that is my idea; like I said, if it won't work, we will do what we can!!!
Chris
UHS2005 05-10-2002, 06:16 AM To bypass the zip requirement tell them you already have an external zip drive. Just simply write on the printout "have external zip drive from previous computer" or something to that effect
Batory 05-12-2002, 04:07 PM Hey guys,
As far as computers...you do not need one. I know that it is a school requirement, but that is just a paperwork game so you can get more financial aid if you WANT a computer. You really can get by without one, especially if you study at school. Now don't get me wrong, having a computer is great. I get a lot of info from the net and using CD's as study aids. Having a friend with a burner is a great thing too, my roomie is a techno geek. I have a cable hookup at home, and I do not have a zip drive. The only reason you need a zip is if you want to download a whole presentation of the system at school, and then carry it to your home computer. I solve the problem by just reviewing powerpoint lectures at school, using the networked computers.
That's my $.02, give me a holler if this doesn't make sense or you want more info.
Matt
drchris33 05-13-2002, 07:36 AM Hello everyone--
Hope all you mothers had a great Mother's Day!!!
I just thought I would post again, to get our thread back to the top. I am supposed to be studying for my Genetics final, which is to happen in about an hour, but I thought I would jump on here instead!! I am horrible I know
I just hope I get out of this "not wanting to study" mode before August. But I am sure that I will, since I will be learning about things that I really want to know (finally.....after 7 long years....!)
anyway, back to the books.....talk to you all later!!!
Chris
drchris33 05-13-2002, 03:04 PM Hey--
I finished my genetics final.......!!! Hooray!!!!
I have a question....am I the only one who framed my letter of acceptance.....am I the only freak? Or did any of do this as well?
Just curious!!
Chris
Tammy 05-13-2002, 08:57 PM Hi everyone!
Has anyone looked at River Oaks apartments? I saw them today and really liked them. They are past Gladstone...about 12-14 miles from the campus. They are next to a golf course, in a good school district, have a fitness room and pool. The 2 BD/2 Bath runs $545.
Let me know if anyone else is planning on moving there. I would like to live close to others.
- Tammy
Tammy 05-13-2002, 09:10 PM One more thing about River Oaks...
The special this month is $100 deposit, plus first and last month's rent is free with a 13-month lease.
See ya'!
outgolfing 05-13-2002, 10:26 PM tammy,
hey, that area river oaks....how is it?..does it have a one room apartment? does the area look nicer than Century towers....?...can you send me all the info you've found or know about?thanks...i'm a future classmate...but, not sure...about living in century towers...
outgolfing26@hotmail.com
thanks
always,
vinh :D
Tammy 05-14-2002, 07:45 AM Hi Vinh,
I found the complex on forrent.com. The info on the computer says that the 1 BD is 800 sf and is $495, however the 2 BD was less than what the computer says, so perhaps the 1 BD is also. Their 800 number is 1-800-396-2076 if you want to call them.
They also allow pets (big dogs), which was important to me.
In addition to the pool & fitness room, they are also putting in a computer lab with a couple of computers. I have my own, but it could be important to someone. It also has a sand volleyball court, which could be fun for a pick-up game sometime.
(Can you tell I'm trying to talk someone into moving there? I don't want to be off by myself somewhere! :p )
If you want to be close to school, CT would be the best place, but if that isn't critical for you, then this is a nice place for low rent.
Take care!
Tammy
nathan 05-14-2002, 08:47 AM Hey all of you 2006ers!
I haven't posted on SDN in ages it seems (due to the lack of free time while in school), but I thought I'd congratulate you all on your acceptances! I've just got 2 patient interviews, 1 physical exam, 1 Introduction to Clinical Medicine quiz, 1 Cumulative Year-End exam, and the USMLE Shelf exam and I'm done with my first year at UHS!!! It was a great year (it went by so incredibly fast) and it is completely unbelievable how much I learned, as you will too. One piece of advice for the incoming class- Take The Summer OFF!!!!! Do NOT be studying much this summer because you will have plenty of time for that beginning in August. Enjoy time with your family and friends. The only bit of studying that I would recommend is if you haven't had any histology, you may want to look over some. Dr. McWhorter, one of UHS' fantastic histologist and anatomist, will get you clued in REAL QUICK. He does a great job in getting you used to med school (I'm assuming that he will be the director of your Foundations of Medicine course). By the way, I thought Foundations was the hardest section this past year, mostly because you are totally not used to the amount of material you will be covering so quickly. But, DO NOT worry, you will learn how to manage the material, it just takes some time, that's all. Anyways, remember what I said to enjoy your summer and I look forward to meeting you all at your Orientation Week towards the end of the summer!
-Nathan Box, MS1.999
outgolfing 05-14-2002, 10:04 PM tammy,
thanks for the help...i might end up at CT anyways because it's close and it would save the 15 min....so i can sleep...heheheh....i'll let you know if i decide to go to your place....well if you get any further info....let me know..thanks
always,
vinh :D

drchris33 05-15-2002, 09:52 PM Hey everyone--
How is it going? Just posting to keep the thread going strong! I am going to KC to look at apartments the first week of June. I am so pumped!!!
Later gators!

Old Yeller 05-15-2002, 10:12 PM Hey guys! Looks like the UHS related threads are the top three in this forum <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" /> Yeah, but seriously, hope that you guys are doing well. Finished finals a couple of days ago and am at my parents place for the summer and we don't have internet connection :( so it's been kind of tough to keep in touch. Question: What do you guys have planned for the summer?
Yellow
drchris33 05-16-2002, 08:12 AM Yeller--
I plan on working full time, spending time with my family, finishing up my respiratory therapy class (which I should have over a year ago!!), and also design a web page for the UHS Class of 2006!!
Plus workout, read some good books, and get prepped for school! So I will probably be fairly busy.
I have my last final at 200 today, which I haven't even began to study for, so I better get busy!
Later
Chris
drhillary 05-16-2002, 08:28 AM Old Yeller,
I'll be writing my thesis, taking my Physiology final TOMORROW & finishing up my Master's (which includes taking Gross Anatomy until August 6th--AHHH!). I really wish I could take some time off, but OH WELL. Good luck to all the rest of you finishing up your programs & relaxing or working all summer, I'll be thinking of you!
DrChris33,
Good luck on your final & good to hear you are already starting the 2006 web page, WOOHOO!
~Hillary
P.S.--I can't wait to wear my Booyah t-shirt!
Tammy 05-16-2002, 10:49 AM I'm going to work until the last minute because I need the $$$. We're also remodeling our house while trying to sell it. (Anyone want a vacation home in Southeast Kansas? ha! ha!)
I know the CT people have talked about getting together before school starts for a barbeque, but would others be interested in meeting? We could perhaps get together the weekend before school and go out for drinks or something. Keep it in mind!
Have a great summer, everyone!
Chris, good luck on your last final!
drchris33 05-16-2002, 02:57 PM Hey gang--
Finished with my last final!! Did I study?? About five minutes! Did I pass? Do I care?? Probably got a C and I don't care; it feels great!
Yeah Hillary I too will wear my Boo-Yah T-shirt.
I think Tammy has a good idea about meeting up as well. I think we should have a few good social mixers to get to know everyone, even though we know each other some what on SDN.
Well I will continue to post and check our page throughout the summer. I am taking an internet course over the summer entitled Creating Web Pages; so I can make a kick ass web page for our class. If anyone has any ideas about the content or something that you would like to see posted, email me or post on here!!
Have a great summer!
Hillary, sucks to be you with all your stuff, but you will benefit in the long run I am sure!!
Chris
Tammy 05-16-2002, 03:28 PM Chris,
I am the webmaster for the school where I work. If I can help you design the page, let me know. It may be difficult since you live on one end of Kansas and I on the other, but I'll do what I can.
Go have a cold one and enjoy your night...finals are over!!!

solie 05-16-2002, 03:58 PM Hi everyone! :)
Can you believe we've only got 3 months left before school starts??
Congrats to everyone who's finished their exams and graduating this semester! <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" /> My genetics final isn't until the second week of June. :p
As for the rest of the summer, I'm going to try to make as much $$ as possible before I make the long trip down to KC. The Canadian dollar is worth pretty close to nothing right now, so the exchange on it should be hilarious!

drchris33 05-17-2002, 09:08 AM I will be done working probably at the end of July. I plan on moving down to KC the first part of August!!
I hope the summer goes by so incredibly fast so we can get our year going!!
See you all then
Chris
drchris33 05-17-2002, 11:07 AM Wow, kick ass........we are up to 9 pages on our thread. That is so cool!! I just thought I would express my enthusiasm! yes, I am a loser!

Old Yeller 05-17-2002, 09:12 PM Hey guys, count me in if the SDN crew's gonna get together for a bar-b-que! I'm from Chicago, so I need to be culturally edumacated for the KC's way of feasting. :D
Ronda 05-17-2002, 11:27 PM HI Everyone-
It's been a long time since I'm written. I'm sorry about that but they was too much homework and other work to be done. I've had a little bit of time to read most of what has been posted. It is so exciting to see how much we've written. I'm really looking forward to starting school and as for getting together I am all for that.
I got home (to my Mom's house) after graduation and started my summer job that Monday after graduation. All this week has been long, long, long days. I don't know yet when I'm quiting for the summer but I've got a while to decide that.
For those of you who still have finals good luck and those of you who are working may your days go well.
Ronda
drchris33 05-18-2002, 03:39 PM Hey guys--
Just wanted to tell you about my crazy day at work. For those of you that don't know, I work as a respiratory therapist in a rural hospital. I had my real first ventilator patient today. I have only used the vent like twice before, always under the supervision of someone else. But I arrived this am at 7 and this guy was on the vent. We tried to wean him off around noon, but it didn't work. So then we waited about another hour and a half, then took him off the vent and put him on blow-by (which he is still intubated but is receiving humidified oxygen at a certain %).
Anyway, we extubated about an hour and a half ago, and he is doing well. I didn't think he would do that good.
I was so nervous, my pulse was pounding, knowing that I was on my own; but I got through it and I feel pretty good; the doc asked me some questions about weaning parameters and I pretty much knew what to do.
Just thought you might all like to share my experience. Just can't wait until I get to call the shots!!!!
August is just around the corner!
Chris
drchris33 05-19-2002, 05:46 AM bump!!
LovelyRita 05-19-2002, 12:49 PM Dear Chris,
Sounds like you had a rather exhilarating experience! I can relate...I do love those days when you're challenged and you have the opportunity to rise up and really help someone.
Here's an interesting one for you, in the past weeks we've been working with a 42 year old single lung transplant lady who has end stage emphysema. We are doing plasma exchanges on her daily to reduce the risk that she acutely rejects her new lung. Anyway, after the transplant, she was on TWO ventilators, one for each lung! It was quite bizzare. She's doing well, no evidence of rejection. I'm going to warn you that I'm gonna need all the help I can get from you to understand all the principles of resp. therapy.
Just a little tidbit for you.
Hey, does anyone know the logistics of obtaining driving registration/license/insurance in Missouri? In other words, do I have to bring my driving record from Ohio with me? Do you have to go to some place in person to do all this? In each state it's different...but I thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone experienced this. Does anyone have any preferences for Banks? Free checking, etc.?
Have a good day, gang! (BTW its friggin COLD here in Cleveland today!)
M.
drchris33 05-19-2002, 01:57 PM Mary--
That is a very interesting story that you gave. What do you do, as in your job title? And how was this woman on two ventilators? That really perplexes me. But at any rate, very cool stuff.
I don't know much about the license thing either. About banks though, I know this lady that works at Bank of America in either Gladstone or Lee's Summit or something like that. Anyway, she works with UHS for loans. She said there is a program now available for student loans, with free loan fees. So it doesn't cost anything to apply for these loans, at least that is how I understood it. If you would like, I can give you her email address. She has already told me (she is a family friend) that she will be more than happy helping anyone from UHS
Well today is much better at work...stress level much lower. By the way, the man is off the ventilator, off of blow-by and doing well. He is out in acute care now, receiving routine respitatory treatments!
Well have a great Day!!
Chris
solie 05-19-2002, 03:33 PM WOW! Chris and Mary--you've both had such exciting experiences in patient care! I'm actually getting a little intimidated--with my lack of patient care experience, I feel like I'm ALREADY behind!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
A lot of stuff is going to be so repetitive for you once school starts that I'm sure you'll be really comfortable with it all by the time we get to clinicals. You'll be able to help the rest of us out! :D
~~Danielle~~
drchris33 05-19-2002, 04:57 PM Danielle--
Thanks for the compliment. But I really don't feel that things will be "review" in med school. Sure I will have the basic concepts down, but as far as the nitty gritty; the physiology and deep understanding of why things happen the way they do in respiratory disease and such, I will be learning right along with you guys. The basics will be easier to me, but I know I will still have to study my butt off.
As far as the clinical experinence and you being "behind", don't sweat it. We will be plenty of opportunity to get patient contact/care in school. Sure it will be nice knowing how the hospital works and how to relate to patients, but just because you don't have the experience doesn't mean we are ahead of you or that you are inferior!!
Each and every one of us will know something that others don't; so we need to really be helping to one another and not competitive. That is another thing I have heard about DO schools vs. MD schools is that DO students tend to be more apt to help each other out; instead of trying to get the edge on their classmates (I have heard horror stories that some MD students steal each others notes, practice tests, etc just to get an edge on their peers!!Crazy!)
Anyway, we will all be equals from day one; I am getting really anxious to get to know everyone and get my medical career underway!!!
Chris
LovelyRita 05-19-2002, 07:02 PM Hi Danielle,
What Chris said is verrrry true....I too will be studying my butt off.
My title for the last six years has been Donor/Apheresis Specialist. You can look at my post in the roll call thread for more details. I have a BS in Medical Technology. Most MT's work in the labs (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Immunology). My particular job is an extension of the Blood Bank (aka Transfusion Medicine). It is one of the rare instances where an MT has patient contact. Anyway, I have loved it since I started, and being at a 1000+ bed academic allopathic medical center I have seen some REALLY cool stuff!!!! BUT, it has also taught me that there are a lot of med students and residents learning this drive-thru, high intensity medical care (I'm sure someone will blast me for this....), NOT treating the patient instead of the symptoms like a DO is theoretically trained...that's why DO appeals to me. *whew*
I do not know how they arranged the tubes for both of the vents. What I do know is is that when we walked into the room there was a vent on either side of the bed. Our hospital is known for these types of things. She's on a cannula only now.
I love to teach and have been known to be an excellent trainer. So when it comes to blood banking and transfusion medicine (the little we'll probably learn in school anyway) I would be most happy to help. The rest of it (that I've been able to experience in my job) really just scratches the surface. There is SO much to learn...but being a DO, you'll NEVER stop learning.
Ciao pizons,
M. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Qafas 05-19-2002, 07:55 PM Hi Everyone,
I am with Danielle on this one, i.e. I feel like I?m behind as well when it comes to clinical experience :) . I am currently wrapping up one of those special master?s programs where one takes the same classes as MSIs; so, I know what to expect when it comes to academics. The clinical part, however, is a different issue altogether. I think it is going to be quite an experience for those of us who, unlike Chris and Mary, haven?t had much in the way of patient contact. I did work at a coroner?s office, back in California, helping out with autopsies. But, then for some reason I don?t think that my people/clinical skills from that job will carry over well to the experience that awaits us now! :D
By the way, I think I read somewhere (UHS website???) that we can begin working with primary care docs in the local area during the first two years. Does anyone else remember reading something like that, or am I imagining things again? I think it will be nice to get some hands on patient experience before the actual clinical years begin.
Also, is anyone else planning on getting involved in research while at UHS? I am certainly interested, and would like to know what others think about it. From everything I am reading these days, it seems like research helps out quite a bit in getting your foot into some of the more competitive residencies out there. I realize that the options at UHS, as at almost any osteopathic school, are limited at best. But, then I don?t think any of us will have the time to get involved in any hard-core research anyway; so, whatever we have will most likely be enough to gain some experience. In any case, let?s hear what you guys think about it.
With regards,
drchris33 05-19-2002, 08:33 PM Ajainder--
I am not sure about the research at UHS. And I don't know about the primary doc experience either. I know that one type of research I definitely want to do is the OPP/OMM/OMT (whatever the hell you call it) fellowship; where we go an extra year of school and get more in depth knowledge of the manipulation and get to teach the first year students. I have seen OMM work for people and I am a firm believer in it. To me, if you can alleviate pain, avoid surgery and meds, it should be a great option.
So I am definitely going to work toward and sign up to be an OMM fellow after my second year. Sure you have an extra year and fall behind, but at least I will get more knowledge/experience in that area; I really want to use it in my practice.
See you all later!!
Chris
Qafas 05-20-2002, 01:43 AM Hi Chris,
That seems to be quite a commitment ? an entire extra year devoted to OMT! But, if you believe in it that strongly, I believe that it will only do you good. I, too, am looking forward to learning OMT; it?ll be a wonderful tool to have. But, I don?t think I could spend an entire year on it. By the way, is that year a part of med school, or is it something you would do after getting your degree?
As for me, I am thinking more in the way of informal clinical/lab research, preferably something related to cancer. Oncology is one of my main interests right now, and I think I am being drawn to it more as time passes. I am not sure if I will eventually end up making a career out of it, but I certainly would like to learn more about it. Perhaps that will help me make a firm decision one way or the other.
With regards,
P.S. ? is your ?paint chips? quote from Tommy Boy? Love that movie! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />
drchris33 05-20-2002, 09:22 AM Yeah, the quote is from Tommy Boy...awesome movie. As for the OMT fellowship, the way I understand it, is it is after our second year, we have to apply for it. So it is before we do rotations I believe.
Oh I got my Boo-Yah T-Shirt today!! It is pretty cool. I also got a coffee mug from SDN.
Well gotta go for now!
Chris
Tammy 05-20-2002, 10:39 AM Wow, you can really tell finals are over for many people by the number of posts here in the last few days! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
I think research would be fascinating. I hope UHS will have enough opportunity for all those who are interested. Is anyone considering the MBA program in addition to the DO program? My family is pushing me toward it, but as a single mom, I don't think I will pursue it. I really need to have all the "extra" time I can get to spend with my son. I don't want him to completely grow up on his own while I pursue my dream.
What about the DOCare program that goes overseas for a couple of weeks during the summer...have any of you thought about participating? I think that would be a fantastic experience. My understanding is that only 3rd & 4th year students can go. ho-hum. Guess I'll have to wait.
Well, I better get back to work. I just can't help myself...I have to check the board several times a day while I am "working!"
Talk to ya'll soon!
drchris33 05-20-2002, 11:21 AM Tammy--
I do the same thing....I check the board many times a day while at home or work!! I am like addicted to it or something. I think going over seas would be great. I will probably consider doing it when the time comes.
August is getting closer....May is almost over!!!

Qafas 05-21-2002, 02:44 AM Hi Everyone,
I have been thinking about the MBA as well, but am not sure about pursuing it either. It is quite a committment, both in terms of time and money. I think I will hold off on a decision until I get down there and get settled in a bit. Anyone know of the deadlines and such for applying to the MBA program? And what about other requirements?
As for the overseas gig, I think it is a nice idea. However, if I remember correctly, you have to be fluent in the native language, and you have to pay your own way there and back. That just might put a damper in my plans! :) But, for now I am just looking forward to a nice, relaxing, soothing summer. I have two more weeks to go in my program and then back home to California! Oh, warm, sunny California! :p
LovelyRita 05-21-2002, 05:45 AM Hi guys,
I've been thinking about the MBA as well. It seems like a great idea. I wonder if there are any current students in the DO/MBA program who could give some input. I take it you have to pay for the MBA tuition as well....
I put my notice in at work yesterday. I won't regret quitting a few weeks early.
Oh, I called Fin. Aid yesterday and she told me that I could expect my Fin. Aid report in June.
Have a good day, everyone, I'll be checking in all day just like all my SDN-junkie friends!
M.
UHS2005 05-21-2002, 06:26 AM The good ol MBA program. Here is my thought about that. 1st it cost 25,000 or so. 2nd It takes up your whole free summer after your 1st year. 3rd you can do it on the internet through other schools for a lot less and you can even get it as an internet course. Not only that but the professor that "teaches" us about health care policy (and also runs the MBA program) is basically just doing a commercial for the program every time he lectures to us. Thats probably why his attendance rate is 10%. If you want to do it then by all means go ahead. You will have no trouble getting into it even though they only take 30 or so.
drchris33 05-21-2002, 08:56 AM i did think about doing the MBA but I changed my mind. I don't think it will be that beneficial!!
Chris :p
drchris33 05-21-2002, 02:52 PM Bump!
Qafas 05-22-2002, 01:01 AM I'm pretty sure that this MBA is a watered-down version of the real thing. You know, tailored to fit the acumen of us "medicine-types" :p That is my main concern with it. I just can't see myself dropping 50K for something that I won't really learn much from. The fact that it doesn't even take an extra year, as most other dual degree programs do, raises suspicions right off the bat.
LovelyRita 05-22-2002, 07:00 AM Good Morning,
Question about the physical: in the section where you list your parents, siblings' ages and health status, what do you put for health status? Is "good" appropriate if they have no significant health problems? Or should you list common things like hypertension, arthritis, etc?
Thanks!
M.
Gretchen 05-22-2002, 12:55 PM Hello Everyone!
I've only posted once and that's because i was pissed at my doctor-you can go back and check it out-so i thought i'd post a friendlier version of myself!
i graduated from the uofm -minnesota-in dec of 2000. i'm 23 and am grateful i took the year off before going back to school.
I interviewed jan 23rd-chris and tammy i remember you two-everything else is a blur-
since then i've been working, working, working. i currently have 3 jobs because i can't stand doing the same thing for more than 6 hours. i work at the children's hospital in st.paul in the exercise medicine center. this has been awesome and i'm really going to miss it. i also work at my mom's dental office and at a golf course so i can get free golf. for you golfers out there i drive the beer cart!
well this is getting long enough-i'm excited to meet you all and hope we can all get together even though some of us won't be at CT.
Hope everyone is smiling today!! :)
drchris33 05-22-2002, 01:59 PM Gretchen--
Wow, you sound pretty busy! You are from Minnesota---are you the one that I talked to that was a trainer, and met some of the Vikings players as well as the Timberwolves?? I couldn't remember your name but Gretchen does seem right!
So do go "out and about", and drink "so-oda"? I just love it how you northern people talk :)
Anyhow, hope to see and talk to you soon! Our class is getting tighter by the day!!
Chris
drchris33 05-22-2002, 02:49 PM 10 pages....kickin' butt!
BOO-YAH!
Chris
Qafas 05-23-2002, 02:48 AM Hi Gretchen,
welcome aboard. I did take the liberty of reading your previous post, and I remembered reading it when you first posted it. Glad to see that you haven't let that unfortunate event interfere with your good judgment. I think UHS is a good institution, and we will all be better persons for having attended it.
I have to agree with Chris about how busy you are! Hope you'll be taking it a bit easy during the summer.....don't wanna be burned out when you start school, now do ya? :)
Anyway, look forward to seeing you.
P.S. - Yes, Chris, we are up to ten pages! But, I have this fleeting suspicion that a quarter or so of that is just you proclaiming how far we have gotten, and finishing it off with a loud and clear "BOO-YAH" :D <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> :p :D
Just kidding, Chris, I'm glad to see so many or our classmates participating.
Tammy 05-23-2002, 07:43 AM Hi Gretchen! Glad you're back to join us!
I'll help you drive the beer cart. I love to play golf, but I truly suck. I have fun, but I'm sure I drive everyone else crazy in the process. ho-hum.
I'm with Chris...I love how people from Minnesota & Canada talk. I'm sure we sound like hicks to you, ya' know? :)
See you in August! Do you know where you are living yet?
- Tammy
drchris33 05-23-2002, 10:43 AM I also suck at golf. I dont mind being out there, but the last time I went golfing (over three to four years ago) I just took a 9 iron and a putter! I actually didnt do too bad, but I left divits in the grass the size of softballs and desperately needed some good OMT; my back hurt so bad. I have the "baseball syndrome"; I pick up the front foot, dip my shoulder, and swing as hard as I can!!
Now, I know this is not the correct technique to play golf, but to hell with technique!
I would much rather go out for a run or shoot some hoops than play golf!!
Chris
Gretchen-
I too have heard a lot of negativity- not from doctors, but from medical school students. These are not UHS students, but from an allopathic medical school. Many of them tell me that if they could do it over, they would not have gone to medical school. They always ask me if I am really sure that I want to go through that kind of hell for two years. I believe that it is all in the way you manage your time and your whole outlook on things. Yes it will be stressful, but there are good times, too. I am so glad that you decided to follow your heart. I look forward to meeting you :)
Amber
BamaAlum 05-23-2002, 12:19 PM Chris,
I know what you mean. It is easy to swing hard, but hard to swing easy. That is the mantra that I have to keep saying to myself when I play golf. Does anyone know about the courses in K.C.?
Tammy 05-23-2002, 01:07 PM Are we going to be the first class of doctors who work on Wednesdays while the others are out golfing? ha! ha!
Does anyone have an idea of the specialty they will go into yet? I honestly have no clue. The clinicals are going to be especially important to me.
See ya!
- Tammy
drchris33 05-23-2002, 02:58 PM I think if I had to choose right now I will do Emergency Medicine, plus I also want to practice OMT. But you never know what we will end up doing!!
Chris
Gretchen 05-23-2002, 03:29 PM ok first of all i have to tell chris and all the other southerners that we don't drink soda at all up here in minnesooohta. it's called pop!! i can tell already i'm going to be outnumbered on this one though!
for all you non-golfers out there-there is still time to learn! like tammy says it's fun even if you're crappy! i'm not great, but i love it. -but hoops is my first love so chris and anyone else out there-we'll have to find a court to burn off some stress!
tammy-i think i'll be at university tower. it's just so cheap compared to everywhere else. anyone else going there?
solie 05-23-2002, 06:06 PM Hey Tammy--are you making fun of my Canadian "accent"? And here I was thinking it'd be you KC'ers with the accent! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
By the way, what would you say a Canadian accent sounds like, anyway? Seriously! I'd like to know how Americans think it sounds! :D
And I'm all with Gretchen--it's "pop", not soda. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
And, this is so funny, but whenever I hear of someone from Minnesota, I think of that girl with the crazy hair from the first Big Brother show! Will anyone else admit to seeing that show "once or twice"??? Don't ask me why she comes to mind--I've never met anyone from Minnesota before, and I'm sure you don't all have pink hair. :) Looking forward to meeting you Gretchen!
~~Danielle~~
natureboy503 05-23-2002, 07:48 PM My wife and I are coming up the week fo 6/24 to KC to look for a place to live. Can anyone please give me some places that you or someone you know has looked at that seemed nice and reasonable in price. I am trying to get a start on this house/apartment hunting trip. Any input will be greatly appreciated.
LovelyRita 05-24-2002, 05:31 AM TGIF!!!
Happy Memorial Day weekend!
Is Elvis really alive in KC?!?!
It's pop, and a submarine sandwich is a "sub", not a "hoagie".
And Solie, we go "out and about", Canadians go "oat and aboat".
I got assigned my Big Sis! <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />
Since I'll be living on the 10th floor of CT, my concerned boyfriend has advised me that I should learn how to rappel! (probably not a bad idea!)
Stay well everyone!
M.
BamaAlum 05-24-2002, 06:16 AM Hey,
You guys are all wrong. :) It is neither "soda" nor "pop" it is "Coke." Down here in the South everything is "Coke" no matter what type of soft drink it is. You would never hear a southerner say "pop" or "soda." Maybe it is some kind of conspiracy by the Coca Cola company in Atlanta to brainwash us southerners :)
Tammy 05-24-2002, 07:58 AM Danielle,
We'll just have to wait and see whether you have an accent or not...I'm sure you're going to find that Kansans do. (Yes, Chris, it's true!) My step-mother says we sound like Dan Rather, but when I moved to California several years ago, I could definitely hear the accent my friends and family had. A southern twinge. Now I probably sound like them again...worse even since I lived in Kentucky for 6 years following California! :)
Has anyone ever heard what people from St. Louis call soda/Cokes? Sodie. Isn't that the cutest thing you ever heard? ha! ha!
And for those who haven't found housing yet, please move to River Oaks! I think that is where I am going to live and I don't want to be by myself! It is off Highway 29 near the airport. Great school district for kids, next to a golf course, has a weight room, sand volleyball court, playground & pool. Plus the apartments are pretty spacious. I think it is around $545-575 for a 2 bedroom. (There, now I should ask for my commission from their leasing office!) The downside is that it is about 14 miles from UHS. ho-hum.
Well, I've taken up a lot of room. Gotta go!
- Tammy
drchris33 05-24-2002, 07:58 AM Bama--
It is not only in the South that a pop is called a Coke. In Kansas, we do that to. So you are not the only one.
Mary-how did you find out about your big sis? Did you get a call, email or letter in the mail? Just wondering.
I hope we get our financial aid letter soon. I really would like to know how much I will get!!
Well later
Chris
Tammy 05-24-2002, 08:02 AM Alabama friends...
Do either of you live in Birmingham? My boyfriend and I are driving there this weekend to pick up his two daughters for the summer. He's nuts...he wants to leave about midnight Saturday night, pick up his daughters at 1:00 pm Sunday afternoon, then drive straight back. He's trying to kill me! uugghhhh!!! :(
- Tammy
AnnaMags 05-24-2002, 08:43 AM Hi guys!
I went out of town for nearly a week. It was a fun but long task to come back and catch up on SDN. I'm so glad everyone is finishing up classes and can enjoy summer a little more. I think I have several things I wanted to put in this post, but now I can't remember them all.
I talked to the financial aid department and found out that they are finishing up the aid for the graduating class this week. They have not yet beginned work on the entering class. They plan to begin next week. Then we'll all get our award letters. I just don't want anyone to worry about where their letters are.
I can't believe the soda/pop/coke war has already begun. Boy, did I laugh when I saw that. I went to college in Missouri and the debate is heated there. There is a defined line down the center of Missouri where the east says soda and the west says pop. Those of us in Kansas City say pop or coke.
If the people at Century Towers, or anyone in Kansas City early, decide to get together, be sure to include me. I'm living in Olathe this summer and next school year. I'd love to get to be a part of all that.
Hmmm, see that's all I can remember and I know there is more.
Have a great holiday weekend everyone.
T.A.M 05-24-2002, 12:17 PM MaryC,
As someone who grew up in Philly, let me offer a correction lest my hometown pride receive more of a wounding. A sub is not the same as a hoagie. A sub just happens to be a large, rather bland tasting sandwich. A hoagie is a flavour explosion, with several blends of meats, cheeses, spices and vegetables. The existence of many corner Italian delis everywhere you look in the Philadelphia area is the reason why Subway has made no headway trying to sell their flavorless hunks of bread and meat in Philly.
OK, speaking of regional food, where do we go to get some of this famous KC barbeque? I'm ruling out the place in City Market that I visited last February. I'm hoping there's some great non-touristy place hidden away some where. Can anyone familiar with KC offer some advice?
On Solie's note of how do Americans think Canadians talk? Typing it would not convey it properly, but I'll try. The words "Oot" and "aboot" come to mind immediately. I met many Canadians in Europe (of all places!) and we made fun of each other's manner of speech.

I almost became addicted to Cheesestakes; they are that good. But, you really have to look around to find good places for hoagies. Though everyone and his mother is selling them out here, not all of them are good. And, forget subway, I have seen only one Togo's in center city and was rather surprised, since Togo's is pretty damn good.
Qafas 05-24-2002, 12:28 PM of course, CheeseSTAKES would be pretty hard to digest! Let's make that CheeseSTEAKS, shall we :p
drchris33 05-24-2002, 12:42 PM To answer the question on KC barbecue, I would highly recommend KC Masterpiece!!!
It is a little pricy, but the ribs are superior. I have never tasted anything better!!
There are plenty of other places too, but if I had to choose, my choice would be KC Masterpiece!
Chris
solie 05-24-2002, 02:32 PM "Oot"? "Oat and aboat"????? PLEASE tell me you're all kidding! Do we really sound like that????
I've never heard anyone here sound like that before, although it might be because I'm from here that I've never noticed it...
Maybe you're thinking of people from Newfoundland?? I know there's a really distinct accent the Maritimers have--I've got a friend from there and we make fun of her accent all the time! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> (she makes fun of us too though, so it's all good!)
And with all this talk of the (in)famous KC BBQ...are there any other vegetarians or semi-vegetarians out there to share in my sudden feeling of isolation?? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Anyone hungry for some barbequed eggplant?? Yum! :D

LovelyRita 05-24-2002, 02:43 PM ALLLLright.
Where I grew up in Erie, PA, the tasty sandwiches you refer to that were made with the best Italian bread, meats, cheeses, spices, etc., were called SUBS. Even here in Cleveland I go to Grum's and get a SUB. (fresh Italian bread, turkey, provolone, mayo, spices, lettuce, onion, tomato).
It must be this Great Lakes region or something. :D
Call it what you want, but overall I think we know that most of the modern world knows them as SUBS because unfortunately (but fortunately at the same time) no franchise called Hoagie Heaven has yet been created. (vs. Subway)
In Pittsburgh, PA, they all call them hoagies too. And it's Soeda. My sister in Houston told me long ago about how everything in the South is a Coke. So I cracked up when I saw you guys talking about that!!
Chris, my big sis sent me an email out of the blue. So I don't know what the agenda is. What's also funny is the other day I received an envelope post-marked from Kansas City with no return address with the info on the Army HPSP inside. No note, anything. Do you think that people spy on us?
Signed,
Paranoid
T.A.M 05-24-2002, 02:59 PM All,
Forget the impass on the soda vs. pop vs. soda pop vs. coke vs. phosphate (I heard that one in a small English town)- nobody is going to give. Lets settle this by just drinking beer!
drchris33 05-25-2002, 10:15 AM Just wanted to wish everyone a safe and great Memorial Day weekend!!
I am not doing anything, but I am sure some of you will!!
Chris
The best barbecue in KC is Arthur Bryants. It is located near the 18th and Vine district (18th and Brooklyn to be exact). It is super close to UHS, about a five minute drive. Many presidents and celebs have eaten there (Jimmy Carter, Steven Spielberg). The resturant itself is not fancy, really laid back, but the food makes up for the atmosphere. I recommend beef with fries :p
carpe diem 05-25-2002, 09:02 PM Hey guys! I decided to post instead of just reading the thread! If the chemistry of our class is anything like on this thread, then we'll all be in good shape. I look forward to meeting all of you in August.

outgolfing 05-26-2002, 12:51 AM I'm back....haven't posted in a long time...cuz of school...finals, graduation....and stuff like that ...but, now it's done...yes....you guys seem very nice....heck...you guys are nice people...I was wondering if anyone is planning to play in the golf tournament that UHS is having....let me know...i'm thinking about it...but, not sure....anyways...just wanted to say hi again and get aquainted with everyone....I'm vinh by the way....
always,
vinh :D
drchris33 05-26-2002, 08:18 AM I think our class has awesome chemistry!
Where did you hear about the golf tournament at UHS? I am not much of a golfer, but do you know if there are other events like these? Perhaps a basketball tourney, flag football, or anything like that?
Just wondering, those events would interest me more than golfing. I am horrible at it, plus I don't own any clubs!!
Chris
LovelyRita 05-26-2002, 08:30 AM Hey gang,
I got info on the Summer Learning Enhancement Program yesterday. I think it will be a good idea for me. Anyone else get this info?
And where did you get the golf outing info?
M.
Flea girl 05-26-2002, 01:17 PM Hi Mary,
Could you tell me more about the summer enhancement program? I have not heard about it.
Thanks,
Flea girl
drchris33 05-26-2002, 01:55 PM I too would like to learn more about the Summer Enhancement Program. What is it? Sounds interesting!!
Chris
drchris33 05-27-2002, 05:52 AM Bump!
drchris33 05-27-2002, 06:55 AM Does anyone else have to work today on Memorial Day or am I the only one??
UHS2005 05-27-2002, 07:59 AM The summer learning enhancement program is basically an invite only opportunity. The school selects students that they think may have trouble assimilating into the study of medicine and puts them through a rigorous course over the summer of what there year will be like. I dont know what the criteria for the SLEP is but from what I could tell it was people that came from small colleges that used essay test instead of multiple choice testing and other things along that line. I probably would have thought it would have been cool when i was in your shoes if i would have had the opportunity to do it. But now that I have a year under my belt and know what school is about I'm glad i didnt get it last year wouldnt have been much help. Plus it eats up your summer. If it is offered to you dont think they have you singled out as being someone that is likely to not do well. The truth is no one will ever know how they will do in school until they get here.
Gretchen 05-27-2002, 11:11 AM i'm working too-but outside on the golf course so it's not really working!
one question for y'all ( am i getting the accent down? ) has anyone received a schedule for school yet? the web only has the schedule from last year-as far as i can tell.
can someone help me out here? trying to plan!
Thanks!
drchris33 05-27-2002, 11:48 AM Nope, I haven't received a schedule either. It would be nice to know when things are going to be happening. I assume when we get our finacial aid letter, we might get some kind of agenda for the fall; at least I hope!!
Chris
LovelyRita 05-27-2002, 12:27 PM OK,
Here's the info that I received from Doug Dalzell.
..."The Summer Learning Enhancement Program will provide students with short courses in study skills, test taking, time management, and memory techniques, as well as short reviews in anatomy, histology, physiology, and biochemistry. The program will be conducted by UHS-COM faculty and current students as well as members of the Office of Student Services. This is a week of preparation that should improve each student's academic success."...
It's one week. You can go July 29-August 2, or August 5-9.
This sounds good to me. I've been out of school for 6 years. However, I've been "in" medicine for 8 years. So, for me, I'm kind of working backwards because I have a lot of clinical experience vs. academic experience. That's all I'll say about that.
I would call the school if what UHS2005 says is correct to see if this is an invite-only thing, if you think it might be something good.
It's going to put a little jam on my moving plans, since I was planning on that week (8/5-8/9)to get oriented to the KC area. Oh well, I'll figure something out.
I am SO not working today!!!!!!!!!(I've paid my dues, though, working many-a-Memorial Day) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Have a nice day, hope you get to grill and chill at some point!
:) M.
drchris33 05-27-2002, 12:50 PM Thanks for the info Mary! I think the program sounds pretty cool. I think I will call the school in the next few days and see what's up. Does it cost anything?? If it does, that might put a damper on my plan to do it!!
So you don't work today......you suck!! :D :D
I am on call tonight and work tomorrow, so I wont see the light of day until tomorrow night after 7 pm!
Again thanks for the info!
Chris
LovelyRita 05-27-2002, 03:09 PM Chris,
They didn't specify any additional costs in the letter they sent me.
M.
T.A.M 05-27-2002, 03:29 PM Hey,
When do we start getting our "Welcome packets", or whatever they call it? You know, sort of like the stuff you got before you began college.
drchris33 05-27-2002, 03:30 PM Thanks for the reply Mary. I actually emailed Dr. Dalzell inquiring about the program, so hopefully he will get back with me.
So do you think you will do it? To me, it sounds pretty cool. So I think I will do it, granted that I am allowed to
Chris
outgolfing 05-27-2002, 10:32 PM hey people...
i recieved the info about the golf tourney in the one of the letters that UHS sent to me....more about it later.
vinh
outgolfing 05-28-2002, 12:36 AM Ok,
sorry about the last post...the golf tournament is in the UHS communicator magazine that was sent in one of the mails....if any questions about it....let me know....
well..i'm not sure i can go...since it's on a wednesday...and as we know..we don't have the class schedules...yet...heheh...alright...more next time.
vinh :D
LovelyRita 05-28-2002, 05:57 AM Good Morning,
Yes, I'm going to do the SLEP. I can't see why they wouldn't offer it to the whole class, making it an optional thing. But then they probably don't want those who can't make it to feel like they missed out on something, and, on the other hand, if they made it known to everyone that it's kind of a thing for the more academically challenged then those who received the invites might feel, well, academically challenged!!!!!
So I'm putting all the why's behind and going. I need the review.
Back to work today! :(
M.
k_boehler 05-28-2002, 06:32 AM Just letting you know there is more info coming out soon. I think I got mine friday. The packet had info on orientation week (we will be at school from 7-7 mon. - thurs.), then the white coating ceremony on thurs., and a few other papers that have to be turned back in.
Wow, we will be starting school soon - I can't wait. Have a good rest of the summer.
Karen.
Tammy 05-28-2002, 07:55 AM I think I must have been kicked out of the class. I haven't received a thing from UHS in quite some time. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Does orientation week start Aug. 19? I hope so because I'm not planning on quitting my job until Aug. 9, which only gives me one week to move. I'd hate to have orientation week during the time I'm moving to KC.
- Tammy
drhillary 05-28-2002, 09:49 AM Sorry I haven't posted in a bit, but you know how things go...
Regarding the BBQ discussion, I am a "feathers & fins" (birds & seafood) kinda girl myself, so we'll have to find some nice grilled portabello mushrooms or something to throw alongside all those patties! <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" /> YUM! My pre-med advisor actually told me it was 'heresy' that I was moving out there (he did hus postdoc at UMKC) & don't eat red meat!! Oh well, maybe this can have a positive effect on losing weight if I can't find un-meat?? :p
~Hillary
PS- Don't get your hopes up for a thick Bahstahn accent from me, but it does slip in from time to time...
AnnaMags 05-28-2002, 09:54 AM You should receive a really big packet from UHS any day now. I received mine on Saturday. It has information about orientation, registration, fun events that week, buying books and instruments, organizations to join, paperwork to fill out, etc. It takes quite a while to go through.
Orientation/Registration is August 12-15, I believe. The Monday and Tuesday are supposed to be long days 7am-7pm. Then Wednesday is community service and a Royals Game/Picnic. Thursday is the White Coat Ceremony. A schedule for the whole year (and more) is in there.
That's a little bit of the information contained in the packet. Don't get too overwhelmed. It made me start getting more excited about starting school to see all the things we'd be doing.
Anyway, I get to go get my TB test done now. Then go to work. I had a great weekend at the lake though. Now, I'm just trying to recover from all that jetskiing.

AnnaMags 05-28-2002, 09:54 AM You should receive a really big packet from UHS any day now. I received mine on Saturday. It has information about orientation, registration, fun events that week, buying books and instruments, organizations to join, paperwork to fill out, etc. It takes quite a while to go through.

drchris33 05-28-2002, 12:35 PM I am with Tammy! It think I have been kicked out of the class too! I have not received anything from them forever. I am just hoping they have everything that they need, and not have to scrounge around at the last minute to get some dumb paperwork done.
By the way it sounds, we are going to have a busy first week. 7a-7p for three days, sounds pretty intense, but I am sure it will be fun.
According to the student I stayed with, he said the first week is fun and games, then the second week you get hammered hard!!
Can't wait! :D

LovelyRita 05-28-2002, 02:11 PM Dear Friends,
Now that we've 'rounded the corner of Memorial Day, school is straight ahead. I'm still at work but I hope my "packet" is in the mail when I get home.
I think the thing I'm dreading the most is the move. I hate moving. Lots of stress! I need to get that CT info sheet too, that includes stores, laundry, etc.
Cheers,
Mary
Tammy 05-28-2002, 03:03 PM My packet was in the mail when I checked it at lunch...guess I haven't been dropped! ha! ha!
Mary, I agree. I don't want to move again either. I threw away about 20 bags of trash & donated about 10 bags of stuff that came out of my son's bedroom. Now on to the rest of the house...how do we accumulate so much junk?
drchris33 05-28-2002, 03:50 PM It is amazing how much crap you can accumulate in a few years. We are having a massive garage sale this summer, even though my family isn't moving until next year......still we have so much stuff.
One thing about me leaving is that my wife will not have much of a wardrobe, because she wears most of my clothes!! Guess she will have to do laundry more often.
I hope my package came in the mail today. I don't get off work till 7pm.
Chris
solie 05-28-2002, 06:20 PM Does anyone know what'll happen if you don't have your entire Hep B vaccination series done by the time school starts? I can't get my third shot until the end of September. I hope this won't be a huge problem for them. :(
~~Danielle~~
drchris33 05-28-2002, 08:14 PM Well hooray! I got my packet in the mail when I got home from work!! Awesome! Man, there are sure a lot of things for sale by students. I think I am going to take advantage of this!
I just really wish he had our financial aid letter. Would really like to know how much money I will have to spend!!!
Anyway, later!
Chris
Flea girl 05-28-2002, 09:19 PM Solie,
I had called UHS to ask about the Hep B series, since I will not be able to get my 3rd shot until Oct. I was told that it would not be a problem. Hope this helps.

UHS2005 05-29-2002, 06:32 AM For the financial aid. You will get what is on the budget sheet, no more, no less. If they cant get it through the subsidized/unsubsidized then they get that through a private lender. But they will always get you what is on the budget. I took the computer money just so i could have a little extra. You will need credit cards because what you get to live on isnt enough. Consequently i am having to work this summer to pay off those credit cards.
Tammy 05-29-2002, 11:00 AM UHS2005,
When we interviewed, the students who gave us the tour said it was easy to get additional financial aid through private lenders (through the financial aid office) if you got into a crunch. Is this not true?
Boy, that budget isn't going to be enough. I need a two-bedroom apartment plus I have a car payment. phew! Life is going to suck for four years!
solie 05-29-2002, 02:49 PM Thanks Flea girl! That's a huge load off my mind! :D
~~Danielle~~
Flea girl 05-29-2002, 02:54 PM No problem Solie :) . I was really concerned about that too. I received my first Hep B shot the day I received my acceptence letter <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" /> . Have a great day.

drchris33 05-29-2002, 03:12 PM Hey all--
If any of you that were interested in the Summer Enhancement Program, I called UHS today and this is what I found out. You have to be invited to attend this, since they have very few openings to have. So if you didn't get invited, then you are probably out of luck!!
Darn it; I really did want to do it
Chris
UHS2005 05-29-2002, 03:25 PM Tammy. I dont know how that works out. Im sure that you could easily get money from a private lender but im not sure if payments would be deferred, you may have to make payments right away. If I was you I would call the fin aid office on that and then post it here, im sure someone else out there is wondering as well.
LovelyRita 05-29-2002, 05:29 PM Chris,
Sorry about the SLEP. Don't be too bummed, you will do fine. I'll share my materials, OK?
I'm kind of excited about all the clubs to join. There are a few that I'm definitely interested in.
It's funny because, they encourage your families to be there for various things. I wanted my mom to put my white coat on me, but she's a nurse, not an MD or DO. So I don't think she'll be able to do it. But I don't know if I want to go through the ordeal of getting her down to KC from PA if it's just to watch the ceremony. I'll have to think about it. And my boyfriend is going to help me move down there at the end of July, but he's not staying, and I doubt if he'll be able to come back two weeks later for the ceremony.
I have lots of thinking to do.
Have a great evening!

drchris33 05-29-2002, 06:21 PM Hey gang--
I just wanted to post something that I thought was really cool. Did you all get the latest UHS Link Newsletter, the one featuring a Dr. Knacksteadt, or Dr. K? He is my hometown Doc!! I thought that was so cool, talking about my hometown and physician. He wrote my DO letter of recommendation. He is a superb physician and individual.
I just thought I would share that with everyone. I meant to do it sooner, just forgot!!
Chris
drchris33 05-29-2002, 06:26 PM Mary--
Yeah i was a little bummed about the program, but oh well. Yeah I am also excited about all the clubs. I think the ones I am going to do for sure is the Emergency Medicine Club, Docs for Tots, Sports Medicine, and probably a few others.
What about insurance? Is anyone going to use the insurance that came in our mondo packet? I think I might do it. Seems to be a pretty good deal.
Well gotta go!!
Chris
Old Yeller 05-29-2002, 10:27 PM Hey yeah, I read that article on Dr. K and he sounds like a great guy. Reading the article makes me really want to do my family practice rotation out there! I was planning to do as many rotations out in the Chicago area, but I guess things are changing :)
Tammy 05-30-2002, 10:02 AM I thought the clubs sounded pretty cool too, Chris. The two that stick out in my mind are Docs for Tots and Sports Med. The activities sounded fun/interesting with both of those. Neurology sounds good too, but since I am almost retirement age as it is (30), I better stick with clubs that are associated with shorter residencies. ha! ha!
Does anyone know if MS-1s are able to participate in the grade school physicals, or is that something for MS-2s? I really enjoy being around kids.
Talk to ya' later!
drhillary 05-30-2002, 10:30 AM After hearing all the yummy delicious things in our BIG packet-- I neeeeed that packet!! Hopefully it is coming soon!!

Qafas 05-30-2002, 03:33 PM Hi Everyone,
looks like the excitement is slowly building up as D-Day approaches, slowly but surely. And "The Packet" just seems to have added fuel to the fire :D :p :D For those of you who haven't received it yet (ahem! Hillary! :) ), patience is the name of the game.
Anyway, you guys are right....the clubs seem cool. I think we'll have a difficult time choosing the one or two that we really would like to be involved with, being that there are so many.
Mary: don't feel so bad if your family can't make it to the ceremony. I'm sure there will be others in the same boat.....I know I'll be by myself; but then I know that the company of my peers will be quite enough.
Chris: must be pretty exciting for you to hear about Dr. K! I think that's very cool, and after reading that article I, too, think I will try and go to that spot for the clerkship.
Good day everyone!
Tammy 05-30-2002, 03:38 PM Qafas & Mary,
You can borrow my family for the ceremony. I'm sure my mom will be excited enough for all of us! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
LovelyRita 05-30-2002, 06:17 PM Awwwwwwww....you guys are soooo nice! :)
Thanks for lending me your family, Tammy! It will be nice to be in the company of my comrades. After all, it is ours.
I reallllly have to figure out this health insurance thing. BCBS is OK, but I really would like to pay the least amount for the maximum benefits. The SOMA deal doesen't look too bad....I'm not crazy about the 80% thing. Maybe there's an HMO or something in the area. But, ya know, as a future physician.....I HATE insurance companies. Especially HMO's! It's kind of like a paradox....because my dream is to practice someday outside the realm of some insurance adjuster running my life and practice. But here I am, soon-to-be med student, in a facility full of current and future high class doctors, and I have to shop for a cheap HMO.
Too bad UHS doesen't offer something or have a deal with one of the hospitals.
You guys made my day with the nice thoughts re: orientation week. Thanks Qafas and Tammy!
I'm going out to find food now.
Ciao,
M.
PS, life's not so bad. I could be on a waiting list, waiting and waiting and waiting!
I should read my quote every now and then! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
drchris33 05-30-2002, 07:06 PM Hey guys--
Just got done with the delivery of a baby a little while ago. We thought it was going to be a C-section, but luckily they were able to get the baby out. The mom was about 40.5 weeks or so, and she had been contracting all day, with no progression. She was complete from about 1230 on, but still no progress.
Finally they increased the Pit to really make her contract hard. They got out the forceps and helped turn the baby. The baby was transverse and angled just a bit.
Personally I hate it when the physicians use the forceps. Since I work in respiratory, we do all the initial checks on the baby. As soon as the kiddo is born, the doc hands it to us and we get to work.
Usually start off by bulb suctioning out the nose and mouth more, to ensure clearing of the airway. Then we will do a set of vital signs (Temp, heart rate, and respers), followed by ausculation of the lungs. The lungs usually sound kind of moist, so we will stick a 8 French catheter down each nostril and into the lungs and suck out all the crap if there is any. Then reassess the vitals every few minutes until the baby is cleaned off and is ready to go to the mom.
The mom will bond with the babe for a bit, and then we take it to the nursery for further assessment. We also calculate the APGAR scores while in the labor room.
I really do enjoy doing deliveries, but from a respiratory standpoint, I don't. If we have a bad baby, more than likely we will be involved. I would hate to have something happen to a baby because it would be somewhat of our responsibility. I have had to care for babies that have trouble keeping their oxygen saturation up, so we usually stick it under an oxyhood. It looks like a thing at a beauty salon for a perm, and it fits over the baby's head. Then we use an oxygen analyzer to ensure we get the proper percentage of oxygen (FIO2)to the baby!!
Like I said, it is fun when the babies are well, but when they aren't, it can really be nerve racking!!
Well I just thought I would share my day's experience with you, that is if you care. If you don't, then that is fine too.
Tomorrow I am going to observe a laproscopic transverse vaginal hysterectomy with a right oopherectomy! I have never seen one of those, plus I get the opportunity to intubate!!
Have a great weekend!!
Chris
LovelyRita 05-30-2002, 08:05 PM Dear Chris,
What a cool experience. Thanks for sharing. I just play with people's blood all day. And, since I'm the Technical Coordinator, play mother hen and ride people to do what they gotta do!
