I just signed up for student housing but I'm hoping to get one of the on-campus apartments or at least a single w/ a private bath. If they don't have any of those available I'm going off campus too, 7am exams be damned. I too have been out of college for a while and the dorms are a big "hell no" for me. I've seen some info. on this site for off-campus housing. Neighborhood suggestions that take into account price, proximity, etc. Try a search for CCOM housing.

cool, thanks. I actually found that thread after i posted that question.

where are all the future CCOMers at?! they must not be lurking around sdn too much, which is probably a good thing. i'd still like to know if there were some of you all out there. holla!

Congrats and welcome fellow CCOMers...it seems like only yesterday I was in your shoes, relaxing and enjoying the time off before school started. We are almost done with first year and lemme tell ya...its a whollatta not fun! But great people, awsome proffs. and nice location make it worth while. One bit of advice, if you ever see an MSII trolling/hopping around campus named Billy Bake, a.k.a. Bizness, just turn the other way and run. Hes nothin but trouble!

hey guys,

i'm trying to decide between CCOM and COMP....i'm attracted to COMP's block system, non 7:30am exams, and weather...i'm not sure if COMP's rotation are as good as or better than CCOM's??? I know they are both great schools, but i'm still confused.....any thoughts?

If you guys have any questions feel free to PM me. Also, if anyone wants my histo atlas I'll sell for cheap and so will my roommate. Also, don't buy the big ***** Green OMM book. HUGE TIP - when it comes time, buy the cheapest medical equipment offered or they (Welsch-Allen) will put the screws to you. I ended up spending about $600 to much. Anywho, off to Anatomy for last practical ever.

Billy

P.S. Anyone that'll be in D.G and ever wants to go out the soon to be MSII's are probably the greatest partiers the school has ever seen.

Do you know Malo?

Thanks!

Yea I know Malo, he actually interviewed me last year and ended up teaching one of our physiology workshops just about 2 weeks ago. I went to talk to him before class and he remembered me from the interview and specific details about my work and such...amazing memory he has..like a hawk..hawks have great memories right? Well, nonetheless, very nice guy. And I will not be UNDERSOLD by that BillyBake!!!

Hi everyone! I will be attending CCOM this fall as well. I can't wait to meet you all! I have a question, though, for those of you who commute to campus. I am considering living with my parents (much cheaper) and they're about a 25 min. drive from the campus. Will this be a good idea for my first year? I'm just unsure if an hour's worth of driving back and forth will take too much of a toll on my study time.....and I'm wondering how much more convenient it is to live on campus. Thanks! :D

Where are you guys looking for apartments at? I found some online that look really nice for around $8-900 for a 750 sq foot single apt in Downers grove and Lombard. Does anyone know of a good company that is cheaper or is this about the average price?

Pretty sure I'll be at CCOM next year...Hello to everyone:)

I'm also in the "no way in hell i'm staying in a dorm again" category and I really appreciate the advice for nearby affordable housing.

Does anyone know if there's a list at CCOM for people looking to link up with roommates or people with rooms for rent? Man that would be awesome...

Looking forward to meeting you all in the fall.

Way to represent Claymore. All those Monday and Wednesday nights at Galloways. Not to mention weekend nights when there were tests on Monday. God that place was such a SH!!THOLE!! We called your ass to go out last night, but you had plans with the wifey. Anyway, we'll go that St. Patties party tommorrow night. If any of you are going to the party tommorrow, Claymore is the guy who slams his shot glasses down on the ground breaking them every time he drinks one. How we haven't been kicked out of every bar yet is beyond me!

I cannot wait to start at CCOM this fall! That will probably change once we get going, but for now I feel ready. I have done a lot of searching and I don't think there are any apartments available near the school for less than $700/ month. Does anyone know if specific books are that important? I have a relative who is a 3rd year at an M.D. school down in Florida, and she is giving me all her books. I will also be moving out there in the beginning of August to set up and get to know the area. Anyone who wants to meet up and go to a ball game or something during that time send me a message.

Don't buy ANY books yet. Just make sure you have an anatomy atlas and a histo atlas. DON'T buy any textbooks. BRS physio review book is good to have for physiology because you will use it again during second year to study for boards.

I was actually in the Downers Grove vicinity last weekend and I swung over to CCOM to check out "the Pines" apartments adjacent to campus. Needless to say, the situation looked kind of bleak and so I'm definitely going to try to find something off campus.

Before we discuss any living situations, i feel the need to explain why we have to say THE.

Its actually because we were, at one point, sued by Ohio University for copyright infringement. Since that school, after all, has been aroung longer than OSU.

Fortunately for you, there are a lot of UW and UM kids here, but only 4 OSU kids in my class.

Congrats new CCOMers. I am selling my condo in Oak Park/River Forest. Great location with 25 min to campus and 10 min into city. Has Panera across the street, movie theater, grocery, Borders, etc 1 block away, and one block from the El/Metra trains. Basically in downtown Oak Park. Good central location for 3rd and 4th years. Served me well for 3 of my 4 yrs at CCOM. 2BR, 1Ba, hardwood floors, back deck, vintage, about 1100 sq ft with one parking space and good storage. If you want more info, contact me.

I was just up in Chicago today looking at apartments.
There were 2 I liked. One was the International Village; it was 925/month with heat included and the rooms were VERY nice - then you have the pool tables, pool, nice gym etc, etc (probably hardly use them). The other was the Yorktown II. They were a bit cheaper, but not quite as nice. The thing I liked about Yorktown was that there seemed to be a lot of Midwesterners living there. I dont want to be alienated from the rest of my classmates, but I dont want to feel like im always at school - need to get away. Does anyone know people who live at the international village or have any advice for choosing between Y-town and Int Village?

Thanks!

I think all of us Big 10ers should be hangin our heads in shame ---- that was a pitiful showing all around.

I did pick the G'town upset over OSU, but I know the Buckeyes are soon to be comforted by the fact that they're getting 4 of the top 30 high school recruits in the country - Ugh.

Any of you guys in the Sports Med interest group at CCOM? If so, is there much exposure to general topics in PM&R and Orthopedics?

Hey all,

Well, it looks as if I'll be joining you guys next year too! I'm also looking for a roomate and I have briefly looked around at apartments in the area. The City View apartments were really nice (I checked them out on my interview weekend), but a bit pricey. I also hung out at a friends place at Versailles, another complex, and that was nice as well (~$900). I'm an HPSP-er, so I'll most likely only be around for two years, anyone else HPSP? Well, if anyone is looking for a roomate, drop me a line (roomate with beer-pong table preferable).

I dont live in chicago, but I did spend a good day looking at places in the area. If you are planning on spending that much money, I would check out the International Village and the Yorktown II apartments. International Village has EXTREMELY nice single bedroom apartments (nice size ~760 sq ft). Solid marble countertops, oversized bath, sunken living room, accented walls etc, microwave, and dishwasher. They also have extra locked storage closets in the building to store excess stuff. The facilities are awesome; they have pool tables, 2 pools (indoor/outdoor), weight room, tennis courts and a really nice lounge. They also pay everything except electric. These apartments are 925/month and about a 10 minute drive to campus.

YorktownII is a high rise building. The rooms are nice (but not as nice as Int. village), and it is a 5 minute drive max to campus. Their rooms are around 850/month but they dont pay for any utilities. The plus to this place is that there seem to be more Midwestern students that live there.

I also looked at:
Clover creek :thumbdown and Bristol club ( nice but kind of far)
I will be heading back up in a week or so to check out some of the other complexes that I missed, and the campus apartments. PM me if you have questions about the other places.

Hi fellow CCOMers,

When are you all planning to move to Downers Grove? I am from the East coast and thinking about taking some time off to travel and go home before I start school. Is moving there in early August too soon? I guess it also depends on whether or not I will get on-campus housing. Anyways, I am psyched about med school and can't wait to meet you all soon.

I live in Yorktown II and i think it is pretty sweet, but of all my friends from school I'd say those living at City View have the fattest pads. Also, in response to the person who was ripping on OMM and Intro to Clinical Medicine I guess of all the classes I have they are the two that I dislike most. HOWEVER, this is why I choose not to attend either of these classes. I think you guys will all really enjoy CCOM. The faculty is amazing - especially the anatomy dept. The campus is sweet as many of you may know with the exception of those damn geese with their sh!t everywhere, and all my classmates are for the most part awesome. I think as a soon to be MSII, we as a class, will take it upon ourselves to hang with the class of 2010 more so than the current MSII's. Anywho, off to go get big so I can look like Buckeye.

I picked this school over an instate school because I thought this school was supposed to be markedly better.

Im doubting I made the right decision right about now. It might be better, but not 30k better.

Fair enough. The cost is pretty steep. My choice came down to KCOM or CCOM - I was impressed by the research done at CCOM and great residency match. I hope I made the right decision.

I do appreciate your honest opinion. Thanks for sharing that with us. As an applicant who is waiting with much apprehension to hear back from CCOM, can you share some of your experience there? It seems like your opinion about the school is neutral; can you think of anything weak, terrific, so-so in CCOM? To me, CCOM seems like a great school (I am not trying to pick an argument) but I would like to know its weaknesses too before making a commitment.

Well I'm glad to see things picking up around here...and of course it's good to see another incoming CCOMer from Wisco:)

Housing seems to be the most popular issue so far...and I'll just say again that I'm hoping to find a roommate or two amongst the incoming group to split a 2/3 bedroom. I've taken a look online at Rent.com and am giving the highest consideration to the places recommended in an earlier thread by Aaron Reitmann that give CCOM discounts.

Im neutral, because I know deep down that the reputation of the school balances out the things that I hate.

Academically, I would say there are few weaknesses, albeit some of the faculty could go to work.

However, I stopped going to all classes midway through my first quarter, so that's how I got through that part. I hate the exam schedule. It will rip your nads off. Its miserable. I was trying to figure out a weekend to go home this quarter....there isn't one. But on the flip side, we get a 3.5 month summer break.

Little things here get on my nerves. Especially some of the 'security' guards....perhaps you remember the man that at at the front of the library with the glasses.

For me, there is little to hate, but really, there is little to love either. My tune may change when i take the boards, or when Im applying for residency etc.

Have a good weekend-
Nick

On my interview day I swung by City View to check out the apartments, and they look pretty nice, although a bit pricey. 1 bedrooms range from about 1,080-1,700, 2 bedrooms are from about 1,500-2,200, and they have a three bedroom model that, based on the square footage, is probably in the ballpark of 2,300-2,600. So, it is a bit expensive, but what it lacks in price attractivity, it more than makes up for in it's nice decor/amenities. Anyways, jsut thought I'd put this out there for anyone looking for a roomate for the fall...it seems like there are a few of us, so maybe we could put our heads sometime and figure something out!

I live in Chicago and don't have a car so it's somewhat difficult for me to get down there, but if it's worth going then I would try to find a ride. Is anyone living in Chicago planning on going and would be willing to give me a ride?

Hockey is as legitimate as any collegiate sport, and although it is not as popular as basketball or football nationally, it could be the most popular in our state since our football and basketball teams stunk until recently. Perhaps it is not as popular in Ohio, but I remember going to the game this year where we played you guys, so you must have some people that follow it there. Anyways, I was just commenting that it was pretty cool for the big ten that the mens and womens champions came out of the same conference and same school.

Hi all,
I am also going to be attending school with you all in the fall (yay!) but I'm trying to figure out a few things first, so I thought I would bounce some ideas off you all.

First off, is anyone else going to be moving an entire apartment? And if so, what moving company or group do you plan to use? U-Haul, one of those containers that you pack yourself and someone moves for you, or a full service moving Co.? I am trying to decide and I'd like to have other's suggestions!

Also, I'm looking to rent a townhouse or condo, approx 2 bedrooms with a real garage (like, with a door that no one else is using, so not a parking garage) and maybe a yard. Does anyone have any suggestions of where I could look on the internet or call to find a place such as this?

I used UHaul to move down to St. Louis this past year and they were pretty friednly and modestly priced. I'd say use them, rathe than a full service moving company, which usually cost between $1,000-2,000 depending on the distance of course. The bad thing about a UHaul trailer is that you have to drive slower (i think 55 mph), so plan on the time lag. hope that helps!

Hi Kim, I looked at single apartments for the following...
---I am living at Versailles next year. Its very nice. My rent will be 880 but they raised it to 1045 the day after I signed up. You have to pay your electric but heat and air is produced by their systems so they said the bill is between 40-60/month. It is a 10 min drive to campus.
---International village was by far the nicest place I looked at. 10-15 min drive to campus and 925/month. They had marble counter tops (if you are into that), extra storage nearby for extra belongings, a nice clubhouse (you would probably never use it). The apartments were very well designed and well laid out. They payed heat and water or something like that.
---Yorktown II was my second choice.. Seemed to be a lot of CCOMers that lived there. My problem was that they woudlnt hold a place for me. They told me to start calling in June to see if there were any openings. The nice thing is that it is very very close to campus.. 5 minutes tops. you could even ride a bike fairly quickly.
I believe that i visited the highlands apartments if they are the ones in wheaton.... they were too far from campus for me. Probably a 20 minute drive. They were alright apartments, but i wanted to be closer.

Try going here (http://www.seniorhousingnet.com/apartments/fyp/search/msa.jhtml;$sessionid$BNRHOPP34T2ECCQAQUCSFEY?city= downers+grove&state=IL&source=a10403)

I was accepted to CCOM with a 23Q MCAT. They don't only look at MCAT. I had 3.71 science and 3.74 overall, I had lots of research under my belt and club participation as well as volunteer and work experience in the medical field. So if you have the rest of you application to back you up, then you should be fine. CCOM is looking for people who are able to "doctor" rather those who can just ace tests, so they like to see lots of "out of school" experience. GOOD LUCK!

Dont worry about your mcat!!! I know lots of people with a similar mcat score...your gpa shows that you are a strong student and your interview will determine whether you are a good match or not. Your mcat will not likely be the deciding factor. Keep your chin up and good luck!

Can someone please give us the story on "The Pines" apts....how do they compare to places like yorktown II and the other off-campus places??

Are they super old/run down? Too small?  or :thumbdown :thumbdown or  :thumbdown ??

any info would be huge....Thanks

I haven't seen these places myself, but I have heard many comments about them. Pines Apartments are 500 sq. feet consisted of a living space, a bedroom, and a small kitchen. I hear that it is relatively old when compared with other dorms on campus...some describe it as small and dusty. Currently, there is a construction for a new gym, so I speculate that it will be more dusty later in the year. For those of you not familiar with Downers Grove, I am a city kid so when compared with innercity Chicago, CCOM is in a high-class neighborhood. There are big houses (for some, I would call them mansions) gigantic yard, ponds, fountains...you get the drill. So my guess is that apartments such as city view and york town II will be much better in terms of quality (much bigger space and better maintenance, perhaps). There is a disadvantage, however; these apartments will be a lot more expensive, esp. if you desire one bedroom. In comparison, pines apts. cost only $2200 per quarter. Unless, you share an 2-3 bedrm apartment, I think that paying about $800 per month (maybe more) is the norm. My opinion is based on what other students had informed me on campus, so don't take it verbatim. I hope that helps.

I saw the pines once....
There are some pictures online that make them look pretty nice (great interior design), but when I saw one empty it was kind of depressing. There are hard tile floors and painted cinder block walls. It reminded me of a dorm room with a stove and bathroom. Personally, the positives didnt outweigh the negatives so I went off campus.

I think it is all of Midwestern students including students of physical therapies, physician assistants...etc. I am not sure if there is a limit on the number of guest you can bring, but I believe that this is an event for the family as well. By the way, White Coat Ceremoney is not in Sept (unless changed for this year)...more like in the middle of the fall qt right after the first set of exams.

Well, it was sept 30, 2005. Thats pretty much in september.

Each student gets two tickets per person. That means you get to have two guests.

Some students give up their tickets, but other students definately don't get the number of tickets they need to invite large numbers of family.

Its a pretty ****ty ceremony overall. I mean its just in the lecture hall.

Hey guys!
I am finishing up my second year at CCOM and I am looking to move into the city for my clinical rotations. I need to rent out my place to 3 Midwestern students (preferably CCOM students). It's a really nice townhome ACROSS THE STREET FROM CAMPUS!!! The rent is $650 and internet and cable is included. There is also a government assistance program for electric and gas where the gov. pays most of it, so you wouldn't be paying that much extra in bills (especially between 3 people). The place has everything you need and more...washer/dryer, dishwasher, garbage/recycling, 2 car garage with driveway, back porch (for those post-exam times when you just need to relax and have a nice cold broosky!)...it's 2 1/2 baths, 3 levels, corner unit, 2 fireplaces...it's big and spacious, cheap and convenient...it's AWESOME and a total steal! If anyone who is interested in my place, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!
Take care and congrats on your acceptance to CCOM!

Welcome to chicago!!! Chicago winters could be BRUTAL!! This past one was really mild tho. I would bring LOTS of sweaters, nice and warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, a nice pair of warm winter boots, and long underwear is good to wear when you're outside a lot during the winter. For going to school, long underwear may be a pain because once you get inside you start sweating with them on. Layering is key in the winter cause you are contantly going from warm to cold and back. Good luck!

Just wait until you get here to buy anything. It wont get cold for a couple of months (The beginning of september is usually very warm), and you wont have to move all your winter clothes.
Besides, im sure Chicago has a better selection of winter stuff than California.

The winters can be ugly in the midwest- I went to school in Madison, WI for 4 years and the worst was definitely the winds in winter where it got to -30 windchill. A good hat and windproof jacket are key, but since we don't have to walk 25 minutes to class it won't be a huge issue at CCOM.

*hugs*

I feel for both of you. I'm from southern CA (LA) and I've had two winters in Chicago, and yes, they've been mild, but I did not do well at all. :(
I never thought I was an outside girl or that I spent that much time outside until I got to DG. SAD might get to you, because I was hit hard with it big time. For me, it wasn't so much the cold that killed, it was the lack of sunlight. Most of the time the skies are gray, and that part sucks big time. :thumbdown

I swear I'd stare at my summer skirts and tank tops wishing to wear them.

All I know is that, do whatever it takes to fight off SAD. I opted not to go the drug route, and tanning salons and light box therapy aren't really a long term fix. I think it was the idea of needing to be outside baking in sunlight. :(

Anyway, I'm a third year now, so if you guys have any questions, you can PM me anytime.

Oh, and living on campus was a plus for me since summer storage is relatively cheap, but I ended up studying off campus most of the time to just "get a break" from school. You spend way too many hours to live, eat, and breathe at school without losing some sanity.

Good luck! :luck: I wish someone had warned me about the weather. If you're really a sunny, outdoorsy person, just brace yourself for the winter.

hey guys...sorry for not getting back to those that contacted me for the apt. i advertised. As soon as my landlord found out I was leaving he jumped and got the placed rented. Anyway...here is my advice...log onto the chicago tribune and search the classifieds for apts in downers grove. There are plenty of places that advertise on apartments.com and other websites like that but they are significantly more expensive. I lived in a complex like city view my first year, out in naperville, it was amazing but so were the bills and the drive was not worth it for me. My second year i moved within 2 miles of school, i sacrificed all of my princess priorities and lived in a privately owned apt. It was the best thing I had ever done, being that close just makes like so much easier. Anyway there are plenty of apts that are downtown downers grove, just south of ogden that are much cheaper than other places. I lived just north of ogden and that cut out a ton of traffic, and made my commute never longer than 4 minutes...which was priceless on exam days...hmmm well that makes it 3 of the 5 days a week ;) anyway enjoy summer and let me know if you have any questions!!!

I was told at my interview by the students that you should wait until classes begin to buy equipment. Evidently they sell stethoscopes and other things in bulk at a discount.

Also, does anyone know anything about the immunizations that you can get from the university? They gave us that blue? sheet with all of the prices. They seemed to be a lot cheaper that what my local hospital can do. Can we get those during orientation or should we have them done before hand?.

The way I understood the immunizations, you should try to get them done before orientation just in case your titers indicate that you need another immunization. I had all my labs done before I graduated in the spring, and my advice is to start them now. It was a hassle to get the blood drawn, return for the labs, and return again for the second round of the TB, plus get the physical. My titers were cheaper to get them done through the hospital.

Try to get your titers done in a manner that your insurance can cover you. If you come to the Wellness Center it will be $275 large, but at least the baller drawing your blood is easy on the eyes.

 IF you like washed up Brett Favre wannabe's

Do NOT read a damn thing before first year. Relax enjoy, and then hit the ground running when you get there....then...the hard part...maintain for the entire year...use your summers to relax, catch up and live normally. Watch as much tv as you can, catch up on movies etc!!!! THERE SHOULD BE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO READ BEFORE FIRST YEAR!!!!

Well said Ms. HoosierDO. As a matter a factly, tonight I drank enough beer to kill a small horse watching the Brew Crew put the pick on the Cubs. And as for Buckeye, I believe he'll be pimpin the green and gold when my main man A.J. Hawk is getting crunk in the middle. Listen to Hoosier though, DO NOT study and enjoy your summer.

If WelchAllyn is over priced, where else should we look and how much should we expect to pay? What kind of features do we really need?

Try the WelchAllyn grade C medical equipment
Sketchy, but affordable

(I understand that it comes with a small flask of gin seen in the bottom left corner)

Are there students that are selling their used equipment? (otoscope and blood pressure thing) I am going to wait until school starts to buy these things because #1. I have no idea what I am doing and #2. I dont know how much anything should cost and I dont want to get ripped off on the internet buying worthless junk.

Good call laboholic. The instructors and MS2s will have more information for us to base our decisions. My guess is we probably don't need all of the bells and whistles for these things we are going to be learning on. But we will find out.

Well for in state it's 36,391, and a previous post said out of state is 40,500, so it looks like there is still a difference.

We didnt have our class schedule until orientation.

I didnt use any BRS books except for physio, and you dont have that until winter and spring.

For fall you will have:

biochem, anatomy, interdisciplinary core class, history of medicine, histology, intro to clinical medicine, and OMM.

Every quarter first year is increasingly worse....well maybe not for you guys since you are starting earlier than we did.

Ack! I doubt you'll find an MS2 selling any of their equipment.

Some people went with the expensive welch allyn equipment, and other people bought stuff off the cheap sites on the internet.

Getting the cheap stuff is fine for what you're buying it for (practicing on each other in the lab). However, I highly recommend putting some time and effort into finding a good stethoscope!

Interestingly, one of our professors (an MD), thought it was pretty silly that ccom required the MSIs to buy medical equipment that we'll only use a few times in the lab.

Take that as you will. But at least we get to learn to do heart/lung/eye/ear/reflex exams early. That's fun!

So what IS a "good stethoscope" for students? The Littmann Cardio III seems to be popular....

Do we need a great stethoscope while learning? I can see a good one enabling you to hear faint sounds whereas a cheaper model might not make them as audible. Is this true...OR are the better ones only really needed for good for cardiologists who know what he/she is doing? OR, maybe there is a happy medium.

Littman Classic II SE should be fine for now. The chances of you losing it during rotations/it being stolen are high.

1. Read "The DO's: Osteopathic Medicine in America" by Norman Gevitz, Ph.D.
2. Read "The anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness" by Jerome Groopman, MD
3. Read "The Breakout Principle" by Herbert Benson, MD
4. Read "The Paradox of Osteopathy" from JAOA and "Hero DO" (Formerly Hero MD) from Newsweek
5. Complete a course in medical terminology. There are several on-line courses and also self-tutorial books.

I have only read the 2 articles from JAOA and Newsweek, but the others are supposed to give background on the profession and info on dealing with stress.

The only book I read was the DO's. Not to mention, IM pretty sure we didnt have a 'required reading' list.

Take it for what its worth. I wouldnt bother.

Hey Everyone! So, I got this idea from another fellow med student to start a Google Group (similar to Yahoo groups) because I think it'll be easier to communicate and is a little less flaky than SDN (I've had problems accessing it before, but that may just be me). You can choose whether or not you want to receive messages in your email and we can use it throughout our four years to post things like study guides and social events (work hard, play hard, right?) Also, if you know anyone else in our class or other classes who may be interested, please pass this link along!

http://groups.google.com/group/CCOM2010

Awesome. I look forward to seeing you all soon!
