For anyone who's thinking of living in the Monticello Crossroad area, do not consider it anymore! I live here now for nearly a year and I can honestly tell you that it is definitely not worth it. I'm a guy and I hardly feel safe here at night. I had to settle for this place last year because I was not here long enough to find a place to live. If you're a girl, living by yourself, please stay away.

Good to know. I almost thought about living there because of the location, but I didnt want to park my car in the street.

What is SOMA? What is Netters? Someone give me a clue about what I'm missing in that conversation.

how many members of the class actually went to spring fling?

I don't think even 50% went. So you're definitely not alone. And the food stunk! Really-- is it that hard to provide vegetarian options?!

Thank you and bless you!! That is really good to know. :) We need more students giving feedback on housing.

I decided against commuting everyday so I put down a deposit with a place 1 block away from school.

Wow. Already?! I feel so behind. Can I inquire as to where you're renting?

I hate that a lot of the places up for rent are available immediately and we'd have to begin paying rent two or more months before school even starts. Ugh!

SOMA= Student Osteophatic Medical Asso. they give you a Netters with membership. Netters is an anatomy text, very useful.

that close to the school?? where??? I am thinking of living at the park at Westover hills, 9min from the school in a residential area. I have decided to avoid Hulen.

Thanks for explaining that. How much is Netters typically worth? If it's worth more than the $60 membership fee to SOMA-- where do I sign up and get my Netters?! :D

The netters is $65, but if you sign up with SOMA, you also get a t-shirt along with some other prizes! I decided against apts on Hulen because they are occupied by a lot of TCU students and I assume that they will probably be noisy because they are college students :meanie: Hulen also has some considerable traffic, and although I have never lived in FTW, i can imagine how it will be trying to get home or to school during rush hour...i also just dont like traffic (sorry, i've spent my life in corpus christi and waco=no traffic) The apt I am looking at is considerably cheaper and has more ft^2 for the price. I want space!! I will also assume that it is less "busy" because it is in the middle of a residential area, but at the same time near enough to the school, Hulen malls, and downtown

I don't know how reliable these things are...but you might want to read them before signing a lease at the the Westover Hills.

The monticello crossroad is on Bailey Avenue and yes, next to white settlement road. It isn't safe because there's people loitering around during all times of the day, and, especially, at night. There were a couple of occurrences that left me a little worried.

The area around the school, however, are safe, especially the homes area. Rent there tend to be pretty good too, but the places are usually small. If you need any other info, feel free to ask!

ILoveIceCream, where are you moving to? I want to find a nice, quiet and close place, but the ones I've looked at are just horribly stank. Too small, too dinky, too old, too ugly. I can't judge the safety situation, but so far I'm not liking most of the places I've seen close to and around the campus.

What are you guys looking for? There is a 2/2 on 4th (behind that house with a rod iron metal gate and security cameras off Monticello) and it's supposed to be really nice. i think it goes for 695. small pets under 35 lbs. are also accepted. the # with 24 hr pre-recorded info is 1-888-345-8896 EXT 8645. other med students live there and across the street. There is also another apt. for rent on 4th but I have no idea what it goes for. you guys can call 1-817-921-3703. I think it is a 2 bedroom and each bedroom has it's own bathroom upstairs and there is 1/2 bath downstairs. That's all i know. If you guys find out how much this one rents for let me know. I tried calling yesterday but had no luck : (

Hulen and Bryant-Irvin are nice areas, but the traffic is terrible.

If you live by vickery its not bad at all. Pretty much a freeway that goes from bryant irvin through hulen and right to school. 10 minute drive... just watch out for the cop that sometimes sits right at hulen.

Be sure to check out the cluster of apartments (http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=3445+Riverstone+Ct,+Fort+Worth,+TX+76116&ll=32.703461,-97.418582&spn=0.013669,0.035706&om=1 ) on river park drive.
They all bargained with the prices if I liked one but told them a different one on the street charged less. Email me if you want to know more about Riverstone.

Hey UserNameNeeded, there are lots of places that are nice. It depends on how much you are willing to spend. Are you going to have a roomate or family? That can cut down on the cost dramatically. As I mentioned earlier, I will be moving to the Marquis at Stonegate. It is a little pricey for a 1 bedroom, but a 2 bedroom with students discount is about 850. There are alot of TCU kids there, but I don't mind living near college students. Besides the noise level is minimal. The place is surrounded by stores and the such and traffic is non existent if you take Vickery rather than Camp Bowie. I am living near families right now and I am really tired of little children throwing their footballs outside. A few even managed to break my window. As for living near campus, I don't think it's that great of an idea, unless you absolutely love walking to class. Fort Worth is such a chill town that no matter where you really live (within a 5 miles radius), you will get to class on time and traffic is pretty tame compared to big cities. feel free to ask me any questions, my email address is posted earlier. I hope it helps!

Thanks for the great info!!

I just found the *perfect* place. There's this sweet old guy (I think his ad is on the housing webpage) that has places available to rent in the University Park condominiums a few blocks northeast of campus and he has this cool 1 bedroom, huge walk in closets, 1 bathroom, fully loaded kitchen, washer/dryer connection, 1 living room and it even has a staircase inside that leads to a cute little game room: perfect for a study cave! All for $650 + electric. It's totally gated and fenced in, too. Plus, it's closer than the apartments in the White Settlement/Monticello area which are nice and would have been my second choice.

Thanks Josh, MSII told me during the spring fling to wait until we get our big buddies because they can sell their books to us for less and let us know which book we need to buy and which we can just borrow... I joined SOMA during spring fling, so I already got my Netters 3 rd edition. Does anyone know when and where we can get our summer reading list?

Hey Josh, I'm going to have to agree with Shutterbug. At Spring Fling they (MSI's at the panel) did tell us to wait on buying all of the books. They said some you just borrow since you'll need it once and others you must have. That said, I would buy the one we need for our summer homework.... speaking of homework........ ROME students.... did you already get your summer assignment in the mail? Remember it is due no more than 7 days after we complete our 16 hours.... (they told me it would be more like 12 hours straight each day) we'll just find out. And one more question for ROME or anyone else who understood this at the fling...... what did Dr. Dubin mean when he said that ROME students had an additional 17 hours added each semester?????

Hey Josh,

I spoke with Dr. Martin yesterday, and he told me that one of the reading assignments this summer was going to come from Robbins and Cotran: Pathologic Basis of Disease and it would be a good idea to familiarize myself with chapter 1. I just bought the book online today...its about $95-102 for the hardback, US version with cd and studentCONSULT website access. There are many people selling the same book in paperback with cd but no studentConsult web access for around $50-60; however, it is the International/asian edition that they promise is exactly the same as US edition. I didn't take any chances, plus the studentCONSULT website sounded pretty cool and informative to me. If you have any questions about where to look let me know.

I am not aware that we have any "early deposits", other than when we actually register, i.e. around orientation. But Tuesday 7pm-8:30pm (online Chat) would be a great time to ask this question as they would have most of the answers to many of our questions. Also, emailing or calling Misty Holt will get you back excellent answers with great response times.

One of the students on the TCOM2009 website posted some "Tips for new students" and she mentioned that if we had not taken biochem, then we should get the biochem textbook and start going through it. Thanks everyone. I think I might go ahead and purchase the Robbins and Cotran: Pathologic Basis of Disease book like you did Dr. Frog. I know we have to have a membership to MDCONSULT, I figure an included membership to the student version can't hurt either. Plus if that's where the summer reading assignment is from....

Mark, do you have a link to that "tips for new students" web page? I have not taken any biochem and I was mildly freaking out about it. An earlier post in the thread said not to worry about it--but that didn't completely calm me. Perhaps I should be reading about the adventures of Bio and Chem instead of Harry Potter.

Anyone thought about having a "non-sanctioned" get together for those in the DFW area? We could meet for dinner one evening.

Good times,

Josh

I also spoke with a few students from last years class as well the previous class and they all said the same thing about biochemistry. If you've had it don't worry about it, but if you haven't been exposed to it then do some reading this summer. I have taken biochem but its been a few years so I am rehashing biochem 101 this summer with our new textbook. I got it new for $56.35 from ecampus books and free shipping was included. It also includes cd and more access to studentCONSULT. Since it is a new book finding used ones are difficult.

biochem
If you have not had biochem then it would be helpful to do some reading this summer. Notice that I said 'helpful' (not critical) and 'do some reading' (not spend your entire summer cramming) - there is no reason to panic.

books
Cell science (aka biochem) is your first class, so I would suggest buying those books now. For all the others, wait until you talk to your big buddy as they may sell you books or loan them to you. Also, all of the required books are on reserve in the library.

summer assignments
I have no idea what your reading assignment is for the summer. But, I can tell you to do the reading and be prepared to answer some basic questions about whatever you've just read. Never have I seen any of the faculty ask an unreasonable question from a reading assignment. Again - there is no reason to panic. Just do the reading and you will be fine.

Quick question for those already at TCOM. Is there a dress code such as no flip flops allowed or open toed shoes, spaghetti straps or shorts? The Fort Worth weather is so HOT!! Of course I know we can't go like that on shadowing or rotations but what about to school? I've heard of other schools that do not allow students to wear flip flops and they must be dressed up any time they are on campus even in the library. Any one know the TCOM dress code? Thanks !

There isn't really a dress code here. People tend to wear whatever they want to (shorts, flip flops, scrub pants, pajama pants, etc) as long as they're still decent. In OMM, we're told to wear shorts and sports bras (women), but depending on what part of the body you're working on sometimes we can get away with wearing athletic pants. Just don't wear denim pants to OMM

Can you wear a shirt over the sports bra? or are we talking sports bra and that's all? How close is your nearest gym?

We wear shirts and tank tops (over sports bras for women) to class, and once we begin diagnosing and treating each other, the shirts come off (the sports bras stay in place, naturally). Between treatments, we often put our shirts back on because it gets chilly sometimes. Some people tend to be self-conscious at first about showing off some skin, but you get over that fast ;)

The only "gym" on campus is the Founders Activity Center, which has an aerobic floor/basketball court, two weight rooms, a machine room with treadmills and bicycles, and an outdoor tennis court. If you need something bigger like an indoor track and swimming pool, then I have no clue where to go. Most of us do ok at the FAC

I could be stating the obvious, but I think the gym part was a joke. Although the information was informative.

TCU has one nice gym...nearly as nice as Baylor's. I'm getting a year membership there with my roommate for next year. I think it's like 500 for a year, so it's definitely a good deal. They have absolutely everything and they close late and open early (unlike the FAC).

Hey Shutterbug, was this info. on the transcript? I must have missed this.

Here's what I found from the chat transcript.

<UNT_Dr_Martin> Cellular Science course, the first course, will be more rigorous this year, we're assuming
knowledge of Cell Biology and Biochem

<hellotcom2010> Assuming knowledge of biochem and cell bio? What about non science majors? Please
advise what to do before school starts to be somewhat fresh on some material.

<UNT_Dr_Dubin> Hellotcom2010, I would review some biochem, that would help

<UNT_Dr_Martin> Start reading basic cell biology before coming to school - some biochem and cell will be
presented but it will be fast paced

<Jackie> 9,0Dr. Dubin, do you have a suggested text to do that biochem review?

<UNT_Dr_Dubin> You might look at biochem made ridiculisly simple

That pretty much tells me I need to review my Biochem before school starts because they are going to teach to us like we already know the contents.

Also, you can go to http://courses.hsc.unt.edu/curriculumCalendarFull.cfm?currid=7

and see the entire Fall schedule. Even though it was for 2005, I don't think it would change that much from last year. Just look at the amount of Cell science and Biochem topics in the first 4 weeks. You can also click on the link on the topic and download the powerpoint or Word document for the lectures and see for yourself.

I probably wont go because tickets are pretty expensive (I think). They are pretty easy to get, you can buy them online or go to the stadium before the game...they are usually never sold out. I probably will not go back to Baylor until Homecoming, mostly because I might get to ride a scooter in the parade :p .

Graduation was fun. I spent the night before in the ER because I scratched my eye (no damage, only a small hemorrage). It was the first time I was actually a patient, not a volunteer. Oh well, it's a memory, one captured in photos featuring me with a dark red eye! :o

YES! If you haven't taken Biochemistry, the first class is going to be difficult. I apparently was scaring people with my last post about this...I don't mean to. I did not take Biochemistry, ever, and I passed the class. It was hard, though, and the lowest grade I have made so far. I just want it to be easier and more pleasant for you. One of the students on the TCOM2009 website posted some "Tips for new students" and she mentioned that if we had not taken biochem, then we should get the biochem textbook and start going through it. I haven't taken biochem...so I am thinkin of buying the textbook now, but it seems like a lot of people are saying to wait...so I dunno...

The reason some people have said to wait is because the Class of 2009 was able to get a lot of books either handed-down or cheaply from the class ahead of us. There is another post on here that has a list of books that Dr. Martin recommended you buy first. Most of those books are different from the ones we used. So, sorry, but you'll want to buy those yourself. I got mine from Amazon.com, but there are a lot of online booksellers.
My personal opinion is that you should begin reviewing Biochemistry now so that the first class is a little less confusing. You can still pass it without reviewing Biochemistry, it's just harder that way.

Hulen south of I-30 is not a great area. Try to stay very close to the school. I live near where Hulen meets Camp Bowie, and it's a nice area. I'm trying to get the 2009ers to post a list of pros and cons of the areas in which they live.
SOMA also offers discount health insurance to its members, along with the nifty Netter anatomy book which you will need. We are also trying to plan some community service hours for members. These are important because you have to do so many hours of community service per semester, and they are always hard to find and schedule.

Howdy everyone. I just got back from a trip to Fort Worth and have some things to share...

I talked with Dr. Martin for about an hour and he had some things to say regarding various topics:

1.) Biochem question - Dr. Martin said that the cell science course (biochem) has changed a great deal from last year. Much has changed including new/different lecturers as well as a new book for the course. The 2009ers used "Mark's Basic Medical Biochem." We, 2010ers will be uisng the "Principles of Medical Biochemistry" by Meisenberg and Simmons. If you have had biochem you'll probably be fine. If you haven't, you aren't toast but it would be wise to look over the first few chapters of the new biochem book.

2.) Reading assignment - It is that chapter 1 from Robbins and Cotran. Thanks again to jbp for the link :) Dr. Martin said to go ahead and get the book, because it's one that we will be using mostly in the second half of the 1st year, but we will continue using it in 2nd year as well. By the time you are done with school, you will have read every page in that book.

3.) Computer - We do have to use the laptop the are giving us (which it's a pretty cool laptop in my opinion--they made the necessary upgrades like CPU and memory). This is because the are moving towards testing on computers. Thus they will be able to shut down our internet access during exams. However, the computer is yours once you get it. He said feel free to put whatever you want on it (Winamp, music, games, pictures, etc...). There are NOT going to be any "weekly computer checks" asking why you have Ms. Pac Man on your tablet PC (shout out to the Atari fans).

4.) Where to buy books - There is no "on-campus" bookstore. The best place to buy them is online. Amazon, e-campus.com, and Walmart (yes, apparently they do books now) are good places. Also, if you are in the Dallas side of the world, Dr. Martin said there is a medical bookstore called Majors. I will have to google that to find out more.

5.) Course Schedule - Dr. Martin showed me a preliminary copy of the schedule. It's similar to the one online already but not exactly the same. He said they were not posting it because it's not finalized and they don't want people printing it out each time they post an updated version. Something he did mention is that the are moving to less "scheduled lecture" time. ie - There will be blocks in the day that have topics to be covered but there will be no lecture on them--you are free to teach yourself (at home, library, or as Dr. Martin said "on the golf course"). You will be expected to get the material, but you have to get it on your own based on how you learn best. Personal note: I know I learn better in a discussion group (ie lecture) so if anyone else wants to setup a time to meet during these "do it yourself" time blocks, I'm totally open to that. Me + book + alone for hour = bad.

I know some of these questions haven't been asked but I thought I would go ahead and post what I gathered from meeting with Dr. Martin. I'm still excited about school, just a little nervous now. Hooray.

Dr. Martin also gave me a list of books he recommend we buy first. He claims it will be up on our webpage soon but here it is:
a.) Robbins and Cotran: Pathologic Basis of Disease
b.) Principles of Medical Biochemistry
c.) The D.O.'s: Osteopathic Medicine in America
d.) Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking
e.) Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine

One last thing...anyone else looking at the Alta Ridglea Village apartment complex? They are off Camp Bowie at Winthrop near a Tom Thumb.

Good times.

Good times.

--Josh

Crazy you should mention that - I just signed a lease today at the Alta Ridglea Village apartments. You should talk to Bernadette - she was really friendly and helpful.

ALSO - is the reading assignment ONLY the first chapter of Robbins? Because I thought that we had to read all of "The D.O.s: Osteopathic Medicine in America" as background to the profession before we started. I received this attachment (I don't know if/where it will end up posting) from the school.

Anyway - I'm excited about the apartments. And thanks for the great updates.

Best wishes, pals!

I looked at alta and actually have a good friend who lives there and likes it a lot, and I think they are extremely nice. However, I decided to go with The Canyons (http://www.paulsapartmentliving.com/commcfw.html) because I thought it had better amenities and work out facilities. For those interested, it is located on river park dr ... which is the road right after the intersection of vickery and bryant irvin. SO its right up vickery to montgomery to get to school ... it took me about 10 mins.... SO if anyone is interested that is where I will be. Oh, and talk to patty she rocks. Talk to Y'all later .

How did you get the reading assignment? I don't see it on the Class of 2010 web page and did not get it in email.

Thanks.

I e-mailed Kayla in the office before the online chat, because I wanted to see if I could get a transcript sent to me since I couldn't be there. I also asked about the reading assignment, because I was confused and had heard several different stories. So a few days later, I received an e-mail from Kayla with two attachments: the chat transcript and the initial reading assignment. I believe that the assignment will eventually be posted on the website, but I know that I tend to worry and become incredibly anal and obsessive if I don't know what's going on, so I figured I'd post it here, too - for all of the like-minded classmates out there. :)

I hope that helps!

Any info on financial aid? We're still waiting on them to contact us, right?

Just started the D.O. history book yesterday, and I'm four chapters into it. So far, I've really enjoyed the way the author quotes Dr. Still to show his unique and spunky personality. It's cool to see how much medicine as a whole (not just osteopathy) has come in such a short amount of time.

It's also a really easy and quick read, more like a novel than a text - which means more time for the Robbins assignment.

You bet, Ryan. It is a good read and a quick read (thank God). It does get heavy with numbers and statistics later on but does paint a pretty realistic impression of our chosen profession. The future lies in our hands (no pun intended) literally! Good luck with Robbins...its definitely a read over and over...

As a post-bacc this past year, I would say that reading the biochem could be a waste of time. If the teachers are anything like they were in the post-bacc. program this year, and sense there the same teachers I think they are, the teachers tend to be very power-point based. Basically, if you know the powerpoints inside and out you will get A's on all the test. If you try to read the book and study, there is not enough time time to memorize. Reading will help in physiology, but for classes like biochemistry I would not waste your time. If you want to study anything you should:

1) Buy the Dissector CD
- Anatomy CD made by the Anatomy professors
2) Read and know physiology
3) Reading for Cell Bio
- However this could be overwhelming too because there is so much stuff out there that you do not need to know.

I hope this helps a little.

Howdy everyone,

ac101ac, I have inclosed a link to the amazon page where I purchased my copy of the DO book.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0801878349/sr=8-1/qid=1148997966/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-7805210-6158569?%5Fencoding=UTF8

It cost me about $25.00. Also, when I signed up with a new account I got a free offer to join Amazon Prime which gives me FREE second day shipping and next day shipping for $3.99 per item. The second day shipping got me the book on friday after ordering it on wednesday...not too shabby. Plus, I figure it'll come in handy if I decide I need a book during the school year.

If you live in the Dallas area, there is a medical bookstore called Majors (www.majorsbooks.com/store/home.jsp) that is right off Harry Hines at Butler St. (near UT Southwestern). They have good prices, will ship if you don't live near by, or you can pick them up in-store (taxes apply then). Just another option. I purchased my Bate's Guide, Robbins and Cotran and the biochem book (along with the happy study guide extras) before I discovered the Amazon Prime offer. The worker there was super helpful and knew right were everything was. Note: they do NOT have the "DO's" book, just textbooks.

However, you might take up dr. frog's offer for the DO book as I tend to agree you won't need your own copy forever and ever (although it has been an interesting book so far).

When are folks starting to move to Fort Worth? I have put a deposit on an apt at The Canyons (on River Park) and should move in mid-June. I'm up for an online/real life discussion of the DO book or any of the other assignments.

Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day weekend.

Good times,

Josh

I'm not 100% sure on that, but my best guess is that you do not have tax applied if the items are shipped. (This is based on the fact that amazon.com and other online stores do not charge sales tax). However, if you live in Texas the sales tax might be applied simply because both you and the store are in state.

I too have heard that SOMA has cheaper insurance. You can review the plans they have at http://www.somainsurance.com/

I've been looking at either Plan 1 or Plan 3. Plan 1 seems to be geered more towards covering the every day routine (simple doctor's visits, sinus infections etc...) while Plan 3 seems to be the disaster insurance. I based this on the deductibles and max hospital stay coverage. Also, I'm not sure that Plan 3 has RX coverage included (which hopefully won't be a big deal if we can get samples like the school was saying).

I still haven't decided what I'm doing. There is still the option of getting a TXBC plan or something--they aren't too bad for a single individual. If I purhcase one in the next day or so I'll let you know.

PS - Anyone want to get together to discuss the DO book? I'm in Plano but would be able to drive wherever.

I spoke to Meagan today about mine. I didn't meet with her face to face, just over the phone. What she discussed with me is how much I was awarded ($36,000 max), the laptop cost ($2000), and that the disbursement occurs once in July and the other in January. Another thing she mentioned was the interest rate (6.8%). Finally, she told me that the whole $2000 for the laptop will be deducted from the first disbursement check and not split.

I do have another question though. Meagan mentioned that I was awarded the max. However, I was under the impression that the max for MS1's is $38,500. I need to get that clarified. Does anyone know?

Thanks! :horns:

Hey Dax,
That sounds about right ($36,000), I did my financial aid last week and got $40,207 but that is with taking $4,000 for this summer to finish the masters program. The only way I know to get more money is for things like daycare for children. Hope this helps.

I received a Perkins Loan, Sub Loan, and Unsub Loan (most, :( ) in my breakdown. It's a lot of money to take out but I don't want to work at all. It's not worth working part-time and going to med school to save on taking out loans. As for scholarships, there isn't many out there (I was told) and grants for that matter for the 1st two years of med school. Financial aid said that there are a lot more scholarships and grants for your third and forth years, so you don't have to take out as much.

That's a good question. I sure hope they do split it as i'm planning on living off my loans. :) Anyone know?

MavsManiac, were your subsidized and unsubsidized loans just the Stafford loan or were those different loans?

The maximum loans you can get for...

Perkins (subsidized- the best loan available!) - $6,000
Stafford (subsidized) - $8,500
Stafford (unsubsidized) - $30,000

Did they give you the maximum Perkins and subsidized Stafford?

Yeah, Dax, I hope they split it too so that we can take out the subsidized loans first and then take out the unsubsidized loans at the lastest date possible (and save on some interest accruing).

I got 4,000 for perkins, max on Sub Loan, and almost max on Unsub loan. They said they couldn't give me anymore Perkins, I don't know why?

MavsManiac, I'm glad you got the maximum subsidized Stafford. I don't understand why TCOM's Perkins maximum is only $4,000 when most other schools is $6,000. Did Lori Fielding talk about Title VII funding with you?

It kind of blows that the required costs (tuition and fees) even exceed the maximum subsidized portion of your loan award. Kind of a rip off!

Moxie, Perkins loans are the best possible student loans you can get. They don't accrue interest while you're in school or during the 9 month grace period, and the interest rate is fixed at 5%. Compare that to the subsidized Stafford loan which only has a 6 month grace period and a fixed interest rate of nearly 7%.

MavsManiac, I thought all of us 2010ers had Lori Fielding as our financial aid counselor? Weird that you had a meeting with Meagan Cross. Anyway, I don't know exactly what Title VII funding is, but, basically, it's more of the better loan money (like Perkins) if you meet certain need criteria based on the FAFSA.

I am still thinking about whether I want to take it or not. I did pretty well in Biochem in college, but I dont necessarily recall all the info. One draw back is that you have to pay for it (although not much, but still something). I wish they had a paid summer program like UTMB where students could go and get a head start on med school. Second, it does cut on vacation time too, not that I had anything planned :o I am really just going to have to think about it for a while. Sounds good, but then again, will it really make us that much more ahead when we start classes?

I doubt that you need to take the course, especially since you took it and did well on it at baylor. not that the professors were anything great, just that their tests aren't bad. if I was you, I would enjoy my summer instead  .

The physical is free on campus, but you will have to pay for titers/immunizations. Make an apppointment to go before orientation and then (when everyone else is waiting in line to get their physical) you'll be taking a nap.

Buy the books you need for the first class or two now - you can get the rest later.

The problem with having classes in June is that it's so hard to stay focused on studying because we're all counting the days until July (and vacation). Not to mention with the World Cup and the NBA finals going on, there's a lot to distract us from studying.

Hey sorry if I offended anyone...I didn't really mean to make light of the matter :o . But anyways, in all seriousness, Bat5751 makes an excellent point. Go with whatever you feel comfortable: if that's a black dress with high heels or a three piece suit with boots, then more power to you. For you out of staters (especially the Cali folks), Texas is humid, hot and nasty, so don't wear too many layers.

I also want to say that everyone seem really nice, motivated, and friendly. I can't wait to meet all of you and I know that this year will be a blast.

I was at the medical school on Friday, partaking in ADLS (Disaster certification) of the incoming 3rd years. Volunteering was fun, they should have several spots open for tomorrow, 7:30-3:00, with lunch provided (pizza). It was fun, got "moulaged" and set up in scenarios to assist in disaster preparedness. We were done about 2:00 on Friday. I was able to spend some time with Misty Holt and Rynn and did get a chance to look over our actual orientation schedule. She said shirt, tie and slacks (business) for day 1 orientation (lab coats will be provided for the pics and we will get fitted for white coats). Business casual the rest of the week ,i.e., khakis or slacks and a button down or nice polo. I will try and get a copy to post soon.

We are not officially registered in until after orientation. Its weird, but they handle all of the registration for us...we just show up. I tried to get an enrollment verification letter this week to send to my bank and the letter the registrar sent said this........"He will matriculate on August 07, 2006, and anticipates graduating with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree on May 15, 2010."

Hi... I need some insight, please!! On my "to do" list on the tcom website, it says that I need to turn in transcripts from all 3 colleges I attended (one I graduated from, a community college, and one foreign/study abroad). I've already sent one from the college I graduated from way back in March, (I graduated last year -'05), and it is still on my "to list" - which is weird. So - I'm just verifying with you all that I need to send a transcript from all three colleges I attended, even though they recieved copies last year with my application from TMDSAS. Which department do I talk to about this?

Woohoo, I am settling into ftw this week, No internet :( driving me bonkers, i gave in and paid to use it at starbucks, tomorrow I am going to see if I can get free wireless somewhere else. Scary cableman hasnt come yet. Anyways, if you check under application status in the admissions portion of the student portal, you should see a "complete" if you have sent all ur apps to tcom. Also, I see that our account balance is finally up, this is for both semesters right? Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I still havent recieved any packets, I hope they are sending them to my ftw address, I guess I will call tomorrow.

Well, I logged onto the student portal and found my OWN long to-do list (I am such a slacker ;) ) I also found that you can change your mailing address and/or phone numbers, and/or email addresses online! This is a good thing, b/c they were mailing all my information to my old address and it was taking an additional 2 weeks by the time it was forwarded to me. Hopes this helps Moxie!

Have you looked at our class website? There is a forum on there with a specific thread for assigned reading. There is a lot of helpful information in the forum. I believe we are also required to read "The DOs" before orientation. I am a quarter of the way through it and think it is very interesting. You are correct about the first chapter in the robbins book. They also posted a suggested reading in the cell science book.

here is the address http://dosaf.hsc.unt.edu

I am! The word of the day is apoptosis.

How are you defining apoptosis?
Apoptosis is a more orderly process of cell death in which there is individual cell necrosis, not necrosis of large numbers of cells.

or just as cell mediated suicide?

Apoptosis to me is a cell mediated cascade of events where a cell 'takes care of itself' as it dies. There is no inflammatory debris left at the site.

To quote the text: "Thus, apoptosis is fundamentally different than necrosis, which is characterized by loss of membrane integrity, enzymatic digestion of cells, and frequently a host reaction. However, apoptosis and necrosis sometimes coexist, and they may share some common features and mechanisms"

So, apoptosis and necrosis are mutually exclusive pathways but can occur at the same site.

Thanks Dax...correct me if I am wrong

apoptosis= normal physiology...say from aging....Apoptosis is characterized by nuclear chromatin condensation, cytoplasmic shrinking, dilated endoplasmic reticulum, and membrane blebbing, but mitochondria remain the same.

necrosis = acute injury to cells

Basically, Necrosis is like an atomic bomb going off in the cell where as apoptosis is a more controlled regulated process. Important to remember about apoptosis is the pathway involved to stimulate the cell the go through apoptosis. There are two pathways, intrinsic and extrinsic. The extrinsic apoptosis pathway is involves the binding of the Fas ligand to the Fas receptor resulting in a cell signalling that causes a clustering of the Fas receptors. The clustering of the Fas receptors recuits FADD and pro-caspase 8. The pro-caspase is a pro-enzyme, similar to your tryposinogen going to trypsin. When your pro-caspase 8 is activated to caspase 8 through autocatalysis, it will then activate pro caspase 3. It is the caspase 3 that will initiate apoptosis.

Then there is the intrinsic pathway that is a little more tricky. This is usually caused by some internal damage from the mitochondria. When mitochondria is damaged, it will release cytochrome C. This is easy to remember because your Cytochrome C is important in the electron transport chain. It can either be oxidized or reduced as the electrons are being bounced around to the final electron acceptor, oxygen. So the mitochondria releases cytochrome C from the internal mitochondrial membrane. Cytochrome c, released from damaged mitochondria, binds Apaf1, which then activates an initiator caspase, in this case caspase 9, which then activates the effector caspase, caspase 3.

There is also a Bax protein that can be signalled to go into the mitochondria and cause it to start releasing all this stuff as well. When studying this stuff it is important to know just know what the stuff means, but to go into all these detail so that you can fully comprehend apoptosis and necrosis. The difference between apoptosis and necrosis will be like 1 question on the test whereas this whole pathway will be 5-6 questions.

Just enjoy yourself :) Most folks arent out to get you, they're just making sure you aren't a psycho. Maybe have a friend drive you to the second interview so that you have time to rest a little. Most importantly, be honest about who you are, what you love and what you have and want to accomplish. Believe me or not, most personal interviews (although I'm not sure for residencies) do not factor significantly into your acceptance (unless they absolutely hate you). You're almost there in your quest of being a physician and I want to wish you the best of luck.

Usually you'll have one interview, then lunch, then the other interview right after lunch. If you're in the rural pgm. you'll have three interviews. Plus another interview by a rural physician at a rural site on a different day. About the ethics questions .... I think it depends who you get. One of my interviewers was a pharmacist doing research and she asked me where I stood as far as funding and doing research on 3rd world countries..... it reminded me of that movie "the constant gardener" you should watch it. Just relax, they like that... you'll be like a fresh of breath air instead of the usual nervous pre-med. Good luck to you!! :luck:

Congrats! The interviews are only as stressful as you make them. Relax and most of all be HONEST. My interviews were with Robbye Richards, D.O. and Dr. Jerry Alexander, PhD who is the director of Academic Information Services. No crazy ethics questions were asked. They mainly focused on why you want to pursue a career in medicine, volunteering, career history (since i'm an old man, this was important to them), and what your future plans are. Best of luck!!

Your computer will be given to you on tuesday of orientation and you will have the opportunity to purchase the "stuff" you need later that week. I think scrubs will only be used for anatomy lab and previous students will often pass them down. There is a required equipment list and discussion threads at our official class website.
