How important are grades w/regards to internships/residencies? Some say they're critical, others say interviews matter most. I want to go into surgery but don't have a 90+ GPA.

I want to go into surgery but don't have a 90+ GPA. Henry 03-15-1999, 10:25 AM I have attended a seminar regarding applying to residency program. The DO told us that the first thing he will look at is the grade; both GPA and board grades. Although those are not the only parameter he consider, however, he told us that a very bad grade will give a weaker impression. Well, he mentioned that if grades your weakness point, they very strong recommendation is needed. Especially someone well known either in that hospital you are applying or from a well known physician in the field. Committee will look at the recommendation even if a students have lower board score or GPA. So if you think your grade is not as storng, make sure you make yourself known to doctors that will help you get into the program. Third, the DO mentioned when he selects candidates for the resident program, he is seeking for maturity, hard-working and responsible person. Never BS or lie about anything, because the commitee will know. Also, try to participate in activities that related to your specialty, such as research or some community service while you are in medical school. These activities will reflect your personality and capability. These are what I learnt from the seminar and good luck [This message has been edited by Henry (edited 03-15-99).] |
