That's cool, you'll love south beach. Are you going to purchase or rent something there and when are u moving down there? I think I'll be buying around july.

gsinccom 02-17-2006, 10:33 AM anyone know what how you get state residency in Florida? Nova is like $4000 less/year for Florida residents. What about scholarships at Nova? Anyone know about these or get one?
chemgirlie 02-17-2006, 03:08 PM anyone know what how you get state residency in Florida? Nova is like $4000 less/year for Florida residents. What about scholarships at Nova? Anyone know about these or get one?
To be a FL resident you have to have established permanent residence in the state for 1 full year, but most schools do not let you change your residency status once you have been accepted-so no matter how long you live in FL after being accepted as out of state you will be paying out of state tuition.
huskyeyes 02-18-2006, 09:01 PM I heard that there are lots of scholorships options during my interview; also, an out of state student asked about residency and they said you can't establish it once you start, you are basically always will be out of state cause they think your there only for school so your not really resident. Good luck!
gsinccom 02-21-2006, 09:35 AM anyone been offered a scholarship to Nova? I am debating between them or SCO (and will already apply to Pacific or SCCO for my Wiche school) for my second school to apply to. SCO has a ton of scholarships and is a bit less expensive than Nova already with tuition and cost of living. Why would you tell me Nova over SCO? I do like that you can do a five year program at Nova instead of four years. SCO is nice though that you are totally OD and that you don't have to share classes with pre-dents, pre-pharmDs, and pre-DOs like you do at at Nova.
huskyeyes 02-25-2006, 01:52 PM NSU website has alot of scholorships on there so check it out!

hi again,
I just popped on their website and can't seem to find anything about scholarships. If you could provide a link that would be great.
Also, do NSU OD students only go one summer semester instead of two like most OD schools? check out this link: http://optometry.nova.edu/admissions/study.html - if so that would be great cause it would allow for one more summer to work and make some $.
thanks
huskyeyes 03-03-2006, 08:44 AM The only summer off is the one before starting first year, then, after the first year, summer semester starts in early july so it's really only like a month break. Here is the link to the scholorhsips, http://www.nova.edu/optometry/studentlinks/awards.html
Hope this helps :p

thanks for the link. That is disappointing about summers(no time to make $)...it'd be nice if they represented that a little better on their online schedule.
alohaknight1 03-07-2006, 09:53 AM hey yal' :) My name's Amanda. I'm from Orlando and will also be starting in the fall. I'm enjoying my time without anything to study for a while, but am anxious to get started! Weather is awesome here, a lot to look forward to for all of you out-of-staters! :)

I went to UCF :) I can't wait to get more info from NSU. Ordering scrubs and jackets and stuff like that is gonna be exciting. I'm thinking after our last deposit is due we'll start getting more info.

yup :) Everything's in. The residency thing seemed to take forever (gathering up all the info). I'm plannin on drivin down April 8 and 9 to try and finalize an apartment. It's really hard to pick one based on the info and pics online. I haven't heard anything back about my FAFSA yet. I guess they contact the school to get that magical "$37,000" we're supposed to be able to take out. I just want to see that in writing and know I'm all set. When I hear back some kind of finalized "you're good to go" I'll let you know.
nth528 03-26-2006, 10:58 PM Hi everyone! I have an interview very soon at NSU and I haven't been able to find very much information about the whole interviewing process; so I figure who else better to ask than all of you who were accepted there. I was wondering if anyone could give me some information about it. The agenda for the day seems pretty long, about 6 hours. I have some specific questions like are there multiple interviews and what is the whole day/interview like? I'm really really nervous and I hope to get into NSU! ANY advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
huskyeyes 03-29-2006, 11:33 AM Hey! The interview process is very informative and laid back at nova. I had many questions and it was all answered before I got to the interview. First, there will be a tour of the school, metting with financial advisor and then metting with the dean. During this time you can ask any questions and you learn alot about the school. Then, you start the interview, it's usually 2 people that do the interview and it takes anywhere from 15-20 minutes approximately, depending on how many questions they have. But be ready to explain anything in your applications from grades, hours per semester, volunteering, internship you are interested in, why optometry, etc. Good luck, you will do great! Everyone makes you feel very welcome and relaxed about the interview in school. You'll love it!!! What are ur stats by the way?
lookintomyeyes 03-30-2006, 05:41 PM I am a first year at Nova and I thought I should clarify something. Our last day of finals is May 5th and we start our mini summer semester on June 27th...that means we actually get almost 2 months off, not 1.
huskyeyes 04-02-2006, 02:57 PM Thanks, that sounds alot better
UBCGIRL14 04-02-2006, 03:58 PM Hi everyone,
I was just wondering when everyone plans on moving to florida and actually looking for a place to stay?
huskyeyes 04-03-2006, 09:18 AM at the end of may how about u?
keg601 04-03-2006, 10:30 AM i'm moving down the first week in august...living w/a dental student...i think their orientation is the same week as ours...

i met him through nova's roommate finder actually...it was a pretty long time ago...random roommate deal's kinda scary, but i'm optimistic :-)
are you driving down from vancouver?

Yah i know what you mean about the roomate finder. Your going in with the right attitude, im sure you'll be fine. I was thinking of living on my own the first year. It will get expensive but its already going to be a big transition for me moving to the states. I hope that second year ill find a roommate that I know so i can be certain.
And no, i will not be driving. I may get my car shipped over...the cab driver on my visit to florida told me it would take approx. 4 days of straight driving.
huskyeyes 04-06-2006, 02:38 PM did guys already recieved your letter with orientation and stuff?
isotope1979 04-10-2006, 07:46 PM **Found a roommate, thanks :)
IMDORK 04-11-2006, 02:37 AM i feel a little goobery for doing this, but i just wanted to say hi to everyone starting at NSU this fall! [i am not looking forward to moving across the country though, i suppose i will be buying everything once i get out there. thumbs DOWN!] catch ya'll in....a couple!
huskyeyes 04-13-2006, 06:33 PM can't wait to see all the miami sites !!!
foureyes2020 04-15-2006, 09:37 PM congragulations class of 2010! This is a very exciting time for you guys, you are going to love NSU. But take my advise.....take advatage of this summer. Go on vacation, visit family, friends, whatever you enjoy.....but don't squander away your last summer where you are totally free. After August the next four years are fantastic but there isn't a great deal of time for visiting family or extended vacations. For example, you get a full Christmas break your first and second year but after that you only get about 10 days because you will be working in the clinic. And you get about 2 months off for your first summer break, but after that virtually no break (about 10 days). Why?? you guessed it.....you'll be in the clinic. oh by the way, my name is Joshua I am finishing up my second year here at NSU ..... I'm excited to get started working in the clinic in the next couple of weeks. When I was in your position I made the mistake of feeling that I should use the summer spending as much time working with optometrist (working as a tech or just shadowing) when in reality it didn't really help. And I lost a great oppurtunity spend sometime traveling and visiting. well, I hope this helps. Have a great summer!
foureyes2020 04-15-2006, 10:03 PM hey this is Joshua again (second year NSU optometry student). If you guys haven't started looking for a place to stay you might what to start thinking about what you want to do. the majority of the class has roomates the other portion of the class typically purchased a condo in the area, but few have apartments living alone. This is mainly due to the fact that the cost of apartments and especially condo's is very pricey in this area. For example a one bedroom apartment around school starts at about $1000 per month. That being said, my current roomate is moving back home at the end of the summer we are going to be looking for a new roomate. If anyone is interested in looking for a two bedroom apartment to share about a mile away from NSU, you can contact me at jcrowder2020@gmail.com
LoveOptometry 04-17-2006, 10:28 PM Hello All, I am a hopefully an NSU student class of 2010. I have an interview coming up this friday. I have read most of the postings on this site and I was wondering if anyone else could offer a couple of tips. Like what was the hardest, most nerve-wrecking part of the interview, and what was the simplest? I was also wondering if they ask such academic questions like what part of your brain controls muscle movement.... Or is the interview mainly you in general. And how extensive does your knowledge of optometry itself have to be to impress and get accepted....? (like earnings, job outlook, obstances for the feild so on and so forth.)Thanks to anyone who replies :) I really do appreciate it

The whole interview is pretty laid back and now academic questions, lol. The only part that is more intense is the actual interview at the end of the day which lasts about 15 minutes and it's just all the basic questions.
swiftiii 04-24-2006, 08:58 PM A shout out to all my future class mates :) My name's CJ and for the second time, I have been accepted to Nova. This time, though, I am coming!! I am originally from Wisconsin, spent the last three years in Texas and now live in StL. Unfortunately, I will be working till July, since I prefer less debt to more break :) As for housing, I had planned to live alone but realized after two recent weeks of futile apartment hunting (since I don't have a job I can't buy a condo) I need to get a roommate (if anyone might be interested.) I posted to the roommate finder website, too, but I figured it couldn't hurt to mention it.
So has anyone else been out of the sciences for awhile? I have been in business school, but the last time I took a class in optom related field was back in 2002! The funny thing is the students I interviewed with all had been in the same position as me yet here it seems that most people are coming directly (or close to) off their undergrad.
Well, it's nice to meet you all.
swiftiii 04-30-2006, 10:43 AM Where is everyone planning on living this year? I spent two days apartment searching, but after an extensive search on the web, I don't plan on living in anything I looked at :( More places converting to condos... including my first choice. I even asked the management of that apt. complex if they would be, and her reply was, "well, you just never know." She lied  !! I found an article dating 2 weeks prior to my visit listing the complexes who had petitioned to convert and they were on it. Sigh... it was depressing then, and it was depressing now. I just thought some people may have some happier stories (to boost my morale :) ).
huskyeyes 05-02-2006, 12:51 PM Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone needs a room. I will have an apartment in Poinciana Lakes by july 15, its 2bedrooms/2bath, very spacious, on University Dr., same street that Nova is on. Let me know if anyone is interested, my email is avorobeva@yahoo.com Thanks and good luck to everyone starting optometry this year!!!!!

my roommate and i are living in sunforest apartments next year- seems like they are really full so we "bit the bullet" and got housing for a lease that starts july 6th...he went down there and looked around and this place is actually right across the street and seems pretty nice...some of the housing seems like it's going up in price so i would keep searching...we also looked at "los prados" and "the waves"...oh yeah and "palm trace landings" but those prices just shot up...

Well, I might see you there. I'm trying to get a 3BR at the PTL (since I have heard so many good things about it and since a 2BR is NOT affordable) but I'm having a hard enough time finding one roommate let alone two! Hopefully something might open at Sunforest...definitely my second choice. They are pretty nice and you will definitely never have to drive to class. Maybe I'll just get an RV and use my free parking pass....
tamathat 05-11-2006, 07:53 PM Hey ya'll,
My name is Tamatha, Nova OD Class 2009. I moved from Austin, TX to South Florida last year around this time last year and know what ya'll are going through... if you have any questions shoot me an email and I'll try and help you with the limited knowledge I have of the area and the year to come.
Enjoy your summer and get ready for a very busy but fullfilling year!

flossin' 05-16-2006, 10:47 PM Hey guys, I'm going to be a dental student at Nova next year. Another dental student and I have a 4 bed 3 bath apartment at Palm Trace Landings which is about a mile from school. We need two more roommates since the other two we had kinda flaked on us. We don't have any preference on male or female (a girl might be nice though since I'm sure they're cleaner than guys). We want someone from another program so we don't have to see the same people 24/7. Our rent is $2055 so it will be about $500 each plus utilities. The apartment is really nice and has washer/dryer and all that nice stuff. If anyone is interested send me a PM or email me at lucerom2@unr.nevada.edu.
foureyes2020 05-20-2006, 03:36 PM I am a third year optometry student at NSU and I have a room for rent at Sunforest apartment. I am asking $650 plus 1/2 utilities and the lease will begin on July 25!! This is a great opportunity because in starts right before you will begin your classes and it is only a 5min walk to class everyday. If you are interested in pics of the apartment send me an email at jcrowder@nova.edu or you can call me at 954-673-5799. Let me know soon because it should go quickly!
GoHeels1 05-20-2006, 05:18 PM see you guys soon!!!

xTonEx 06-12-2006, 03:01 AM Anybody know of any inexpensive (less than $900/month) 1-bedroom apartments within a 10 minute drive from the school? Anything besides Cameron Cove, Sunforest, and Sundance since they are more than $900/month (even though some websites may say less, the property manager quoted me a higher rate).
Thanks.

Let me know if you find one, because I may be needing it. This roommate searching is the pits. Much harder than getting into school. Sigh... I cannot wait for class to start. By that time I will at least be living somewhere :)
huskyeyes 06-14-2006, 02:44 PM hey is everyone buying their kits before july 1 or during the orientation?
swiftiii 06-14-2006, 05:20 PM hey is everyone buying their kits before july 1 or during the orientation?
Definitely before. Buying it now will make it (spending $2K) seem much less painless. For me anyway :)
huskyeyes 06-14-2006, 07:36 PM Definitely before. Buying it now will make it (spending $2K) seem much less painless. For me anyway :)
lol, that's true plus you'll be able to get your name engraved and pick it up without standing in line to pay during the orientation week :)
swiftiii 06-14-2006, 07:59 PM lol, that's true plus you'll be able to get your name engraved and pick it up without standing in line to pay during the orientation week :)
AND it will give you more time to sleep in if you end up in groups 1-6, according to the orientation schedule.
;)
alohaknight1 06-22-2006, 11:20 AM I'm hoping some current students can answer a few questions for me..So on our list of extra mandatory items that we can purchase at the equipment fair (or on our own before hand), it lists a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff as 150 bucks. Does everyone have cardiology steths? I know I can get a classic 2SE Littmann for 65 that seems to meet all the specs they gave us. What do most students have and are we allowed to have colored tubing? Thanks for any advice :)

I really wouldn't rush out and buy anything right now because I got my stethoscope and blood pressure cuff free with the purchase of my diagnostic set at our first equipment fair. You really don't need anything special like a cadiology steth and you are allowed to have different colors. I hope that helps.

Thanks!
