Having trouble deciding on which one to rank #1, both seem like great programs. I know Vandy is lighter on flight, U.S., volume; Indy seems a little more balanced. What do you think about how these programs compare?

View Full Version : Indiana vs Vandy, what do you think? Kazu2006 02-13-2006, 05:53 PM Having trouble deciding on which one to rank #1, both seem like great programs. Both are great.. Taintwax 02-13-2006, 09:07 PM Indy is, in my assessment, an all-round better program. I just wish I could be happy living in Indianapolis. I would give anything to put the Indiana program in the southeast somewhere. It would be #1 on my list. GeneralVeers 02-13-2006, 09:12 PM Indy is, in my assessment, an all-round better program. I just wish I could be happy living in Indianapolis. I would give anything to put the Indiana program in the southeast somewhere. It would be #1 on my list. I lived in Indy for 6 years. If you don't mind a slightly cold Winter (it's nowhere near as bad as Chicago) then it's probably one of the most liveable cities in the U.S. EMDoc2006 02-13-2006, 10:02 PM :D I agree with the above posters. Both are very good programs, but I think Indy is a much more well-rounded program. I think it is better representative of the "real world" private EM practice. Plus you have a greater volume (so you kinda have the option to pick and choose the cool cases since you don't see all the pts.) I think it is academically just as strong as Vandy as far as didactics (maybe slightly lacking in research) I prefer the 9 hr shifts which your give you the opportunity to go home and read (especially important your 1st year) and some other perks are: -Assigned reading (which I need to keep me on track) -strong physician flight (not just tag a longs) -More workshops and simulations -Ability to work in private, community, and county ED's -More organized scheduling pattern -More time off each year  -More casual relationship among residents and faculty (first name basis) with scheduled "social calender" -The " Hoosiers" GeneralVeers 02-13-2006, 10:17 PM I agree with the above post. The flight program is one of the best in the country. When I rotated through there all the residents seemed to be extremely happy. The faculty is great for the most part. There's a good mix of ED environments too: Methodist - Large Tertiary Care Level 1 trauma center, like private practice. Wishard - County hospital with enormous ED Level 1 trauma center, and excellent penetrating trauma. Additionally off-service rotations are very strong, as IU has great medicine/surgery residencies. corpsmanUP 02-14-2006, 06:37 AM Sure, but what reallllly matters is that at Vandy you can take a month off to fly around the world and have 20 sexy bachelorettes drooling over you. Then you can fly your ortho buddies to meet you in Paris. Some programs have their Hawaii elective, but Vandy has their Hollywood/Bachelor elective. That trumps all that stuff about Indy ;) EctopicFetus 02-14-2006, 07:12 AM But corpsman, you and I are married.. as such I think if we took that elective we might end up divorced and ridiculed on TV.. AceUF78 02-15-2006, 12:37 PM They are both good programs. I would rank them 1 and 2 :) I hope this helps  corpsmanUP 02-15-2006, 07:46 PM But corpsman, you and I are married.. as such I think if we took that elective we might end up divorced and ridiculed on TV.. I'd be ridiculed anyway as soon as they saw my abs after taking my shirt off on the yacht!! My wife said she'd be happy to go on the elective, but for me to sign over my future earnings before I leave! corpsmanUP 02-15-2006, 07:46 PM duplicate |
