Can an OMFS that went the extra 2 years to earn the MD degree ever practice family medicine or would this take an extra fellowship or residency?

I think a decision such as that would render someone legally incompetent...not a bad idea, though, if you're ever convicted of a crime...

If one wants to practice family practice, a residency would be required!

Better question, why in the world would you want to practice family medicine after being trained as an oral surgeon? It would be like trading in Ferrari for a Cavalier.

Obviously your mother never taught you that it's not nice to make fun of people with disabilities. Herpes is no laughing matter, my friend...

hah.. i agree that going to med school would be easier. Being a GP is all I dream about for now, but I was just wondering how it would work. I'm assuming the MD would allow the surgeon to prescribe anything he/she wants (within reason), while a dentist wouldn't be able to do that right?

If you wanted to do that, you'd have to transfer out of your OMFS program AFTER the MD years and then get accepted into a family medicine residency to complete your training. I have a friend that started out OMFS/MD, did his intern year, then the 2 years of med school, during which time he decided that we wanted to be an anesthesiologist insted of an OMFS, applied for an and was accepted for an anesthesia residency, got out of his OMFS residency, and is now a DMD/MD anesthesiologist practicing in the Miami area.
