Hi guys,

I've read a little bit about wilderness medicine in the student jorunals of the medical schols i've been interviewing at, and also seen a few programs on tv with "wilderness medicine specialists". I assume it involves some type of fellowship done by ER physicians?

I love the outdoors and leading an active lifestyle, so at this very early stage in my medical career I was thinking that some type of sports medicine would be something that I would like to investigate further (although I'm trying to remain openminded until i get to see more specialties firsthand as a rotating student). However, this seems like another field I would like to look in to. I haven't been able to find a whole lot of information and I was wondering if this is something that a lot of people do full time, if it is a pretty rare field, or of it is only practiced "on the side" by ER physicians.

I also enjoy research, so I was wondering if there are any research opportunities on the more basic science end in this field.
Any additional information that anyone deems relevant would also be appreciated.

Thanks a lot

the official site is www.wms.org (Wilderness Medical Society)

It's also not exclusive to EM. I know you can go through FP and do a fellowship. Basic idea is to learn medical techniques that can be applied in remote environments. If you visit the WMS site, they can pretty much answer all of your questions. Be sure to check out the part about Elective rotations as they seem to have some pretty unique learning opportunities available.

I am also wondering about Wilderness Medicine. I am mainly interested in high altitude medicine. I know that Stanford has a program for this, but I was wondering if any other places did as well (CU for example).
