You have an order for 8500 units of heparin to be delivered over 6 hours in 500 mL of NS. You have available one 5 mL vial of U-5000 heparin. If your infusion set is calibrated to 18gtts/mL, what should your infusion rate be (gtts/min)?

a. 38 gtts/min
b. 3.8 gtts/min
c. 46 gtts/min
d. 4.6 gtts/min

I'm getting 25gtts/min. Could someone please tell me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I get 25, too. Maybe I'm also missing something?

I get the same answer as you do, if I don't adjust for overfill in the NS bag and the volume of heparin added. With adjustment, I get 27.6 gtts/min.

Talked to the instructor and found out the problem had errors. The correct answer is 25.

Thanks for all those responded!
