George_Clooney 03-08-2006, 01:10 PM Hey All: I recently found out I was accepted to UW and I am can't wait to meet my future classmates!! Anyone else headed to Seattle in the Fall?
If anyone is already living in Seattle, any housing suggestions??
Take care,
~GC
olydoc2b 03-09-2006, 05:37 PM Well, I haven't been accepted to UWSOM (yet?--still in the pool) but I live in Seattle and have off and on for the past 10 years, so I can help out a bit. What are you looking for? Seattle is a great city--I was here when I was a bit younger gallavanting about and now I've got a husband and kids, so my gallavanting takes a different form--but I must say the city has been great for it all. Cheap it is not, though. Where are you coming from, what are you looking for, etc? Feel free to PM me if you'd like. Congrats to you!!!
Peter Griffen 03-11-2006, 10:47 AM I just got accepted as an Idaho applicant so I won't be in Seattle until my second year. I will be in Moscow/Pullman though. Anymore accepted Idaho applicants out there?

just found out last week that I was accepted as an Idaho applicant as well. life is good.
Peter Griffen, does B-town mean Boston or Boise?
Peter Griffen 03-15-2006, 01:32 PM B-town is Boise! I am so excited I got in! Congrats to you as well! Are you from Boise too? Are you going to see the campus on Monday?
Vista04 03-15-2006, 03:19 PM B-town is Boise! I am so excited I got in! Congrats to you as well! Are you from Boise too? Are you going to see the campus on Monday?
I thought it might be Boise. great place.
I'm trying to figure out how to make it to Moscow on Monday, but I'm in Boston now and not quite sure if it's going to be possible. I'd like to make it mostly to meet fellow classmates.
I spoke w/ an E05 friend who is there now and has helped coordinate the day and said so far 10-12 people have already committed and 2-6 others could possibly show up as well. seems like a decent turnout.
titoincali 03-16-2006, 11:42 PM I can finally officially post in this thread!
I'm not sure if I'll be sent to Pullman because I heard that they keep the OOS students in Seattle. Does anyone know if that's true?
Peter Griffen 03-16-2006, 11:47 PM Congrats. I'm honestly not sure about OOS applicants being sent to Pullman or not. Has anyone started looking at housing options in Moscow/Pullman or Seattle for that matter? I talked to a resident in an ER in Boise that was a WWAMI student and he said that most everyone lived in Moscow because it was a little bit cheaper. I really haven't had a chance to look yet.
aspiringdoctor 03-17-2006, 02:04 PM hi everyone,
yeahhhh!!!!, finally I saw a thread for University of Washington 2010, I'm very excited to get accepted to the UW, I hope to stay in seattle because it's closer to my family, but I'm happy to go to WSU if chosen.
ABout housing arrangement, I heard that only undergraduate students stay in the dorms, so I think I will rent apartment or share with someone. How about you guys? I can't wait to meet all of you.
titoincali 03-17-2006, 03:57 PM Hi aspiringdoctor!
I've been scoping out craigslist for apartments. Compared to the Bay Area, it all seems very reasonable! What are some good neighborhoods to check out?
aspiringdoctor 03-17-2006, 04:39 PM Hi aspiringdoctor!
I've been scoping out craigslist for apartments. Compared to the Bay Area, it all seems very reasonable! What are some good neighborhoods to check out?
Hi titoincali,
congratulation on your acceptance. i'm also looking at seattle craigslist right now. I don't know seattle that well, but I would prefer to stay around the University district. I still have 2 more months in school, so I don't have time to seriously look into finding an apartment, I will do that during the summer. besides, I don't know if I will stay in seattle or go to WSU. But I hope to see you at Seattle this coming fall.
olydoc2b 03-18-2006, 12:42 PM FYI, I was on the waitlist (and therefore the financial aid email list) all summer last year and they forward all sorts of good housing deals--lots of places that have rented to med students in the past, are near campus, good grad student areas, etc.
Oh--and I wouldn't necessarily recommend the U. District as the best place to live. Capital hill, eastlake, ravenna, wedgewood, and laurelhurst have easy bus or bike access--especially places on the burke-gilman trail. Montlake is great too and really close. Just some ideas.... :)

Thanks! Your advice one U District is exactly the advice I received from a friend at UDub just 1 hour ago! And thanks for the suggestions. I'm moving up to Seattle in early June so those emails from the financial aid office might be too late. I'm really excited.
Squid 03-20-2006, 07:17 PM Hey folks. .
Congrats everyone on UW acceptance. I'm an Idahoah and I just went for visitation day at Pullman - seems like some awesome people are going to be in UW 2010 class. Just wanted to post housing recommendations for UW Pullman/Idaho area. I currently live in Moscow, and I highly recommend living there over Pullman. It's got better restaurants, better grocery stores, a co-op, a downtown, a farmer's market - things that make rural areas awesome. Plus the houses and apartments have more personality.
Check out: http://asui.uidaho.edu/trading/index.cgi?mo=major;majorid=583
Cool places to live: Russell District, near East City Park, there are many more
Feel free to PM me with questions
Hope to possibly see some of you next year, depending on what we all decide.
And congrats again!
Hey everyone!
I just found out that I am on the waitlist for UW (Idaho list). Hopefully I'll get in and see ya'll in E-06!
chip77 03-20-2006, 10:38 PM I'm 50% on my way to Seattle. The other 50% is staying here in cali to attend UCSF. Still deciding between the two...
are you a washington resident?
titoincali 03-23-2006, 07:15 AM are you a washington resident?
Who are your directing your questions to??
sorry... my little reply thing didn't quote the message. I was directing my Q to chip77.
chip77 03-23-2006, 09:38 AM are you a washington resident?
No, I'm a California resident.
I'm edging over more and more to UCSF. However, I can't wait til the 3rd week of April to re-visit both schools and make my final decision.

best of luck to ya! The out of state tuition at UW is huge, but the program is great! good luck with that decision!
chip77 03-24-2006, 12:20 AM best of luck to ya! The out of state tuition at UW is huge, but the program is great! good luck with that decision!
Thanks! Actually, the cost of attendance for UCSF isn't that far from UW's - 1st year UCSF $44000 vs. $50,300 for 1st year UW (cost of living in SF is just sooo expensive compared to Seattle). Plus, there's an option to file for Washington state residency later on, which would bring down the cost of attendance for UW much further.
Thus, money really isn't the deciding factor at this point. I just wish I can make that final decision soon...
bside 03-24-2006, 09:21 AM Does anyone know if there is a second look weekend for the seattle campus of the UWSOM? I had heard that there is one specifically for under-represented minorities but no general one. I would love to see the ins and outs of the school again and meet some of my future classmates as well.

I was told that if you had responded back with a "FIRM" acceptance, then you wouldn't get invited back for second look/preview days (hence the "firm" decision). However, if you were still unsure (and replied with a "TENTATIVE" acceptance), then you would get invited back. I think it's a bit strange, but so be it.
swman 03-28-2006, 11:42 AM Hey everybody, if you haven't heard of me yet, I'm an accepted Washington resident who is going to Pullman/Moscow next year. For anyone else still asking, I checked out the orientation in Pullman and did get to look at housing. I hear from pretty much all the M1's that Moscow is a better place to live in. In fact, I've already found a place in Moscow owned by a couple docs. It's called the co-ed WWAMI house and is a huge 5-bedroom 3-bathroom in a residential area. PM me if you want to know more about it. So far I'm the only person living there... once I drop off this lease agreement in the mailbox. Btw there's a website that has tons of info from current students regarding housing:
http://www.wsu.edu/~wwami/Day_in_the_life/default.htm
adiddas125 03-28-2006, 12:11 PM Ahh ineed life is pretty sweet right now. I recently got accepted!!! Let the next 4 years of our lives be awesome!!!!
I hear we need to be CPR certified again?
Beaner81 03-28-2006, 01:17 PM It's so exciting to find this thread! I just got accepted yesterday, and it still hasn't sunk in. I'm OOS, so I'll be in Seattle in the fall. Tito, I live in SF too! Anyone else OOS?
EvolutionKills 03-28-2006, 01:30 PM So we're all going to be classmates, eh? I just got accepted yesterday, and I'm still just floating on air. I look forward to meeting you all in person, but in the meantime, I can't seem to find when we start in the fall (I haven't gotten a letter yet--just phone communication). I need to let my employer know; can anyone help me out?
bside 03-28-2006, 01:46 PM According the to letter I received in January, the tentative orientation dates are:
WY: 8/5
AK: 8/19-8/22
MT: TBD
ID/WA Pullman: 8/10-8/12
WA Seattle: 8/28-9/1
I'm sure you'll all be getting this info in your acceptance packages soon as well. Congrats!

Hey Beaner81, Congrats! There are actually a few people on this website from the Bay Area that are accepted at UW. They must really like Bay Area people so few OOS and so far all those OOS I've heard about are from this area!!
Are you going to the 2nd look weekend?
homeostatician 03-28-2006, 03:12 PM Congrats everyone! :D :D
I hope to meet all of you in good time. Does anyone know if our acceptance package tells us where we will be in the fall(either Pullman or Seattle)? Have they already decided who is going there or will they pick more people later on? I remember checking on my application that I'd be willing to go if chosen, but I'd much rather remain in Seattle if possible.

You get to indicate your preference again on the acceptance reply form. If they can't fill all the Pullman spots with volunteers, I believe they will have a lottery in early may.
Squid 03-28-2006, 04:38 PM Congrats everyone on getting accepted! It's very exciting.
I completely understand the "not wanting to be in Pullman" sentiment, but it's not that bad. I'm mostly a bay area girl who has somehow wound up on the Palouse for the last 2 years (I sometimes feel like Dorthy from the Wizard of Oz) and, while I am very excited to get back to life on the coast, I'm actually looking forward to spending my first year here. The current first year WSU/UI WAMMI class have great things to say about their experience. Small class size and many hours of work breed that good old-fashioned bonding through suffering. ;)
All this to say. . come here! Actually, more to say, I live in Moscow now and, if anyone has any questions about what it's like/where to live/how bad it really is, I'll gladly answer them. Just post here or PM me.
Congrats again everyone! I'm excited to meet everyone either this year or next.

Squid,
I'm so glad you came to the Pullman orientation and that I got to meet you!! You seem like you would make an awesome classmate. So I'm hoping you got a more positive vibe that day than you did on your interview day... seems like you're a little more excited than before about staying in Idaho :D . So yeah I'm glad I was able to play a part in talking you into coming. I'm from the city and the area was like nothing I've ever seen before... I'm sure it will be a nice change of pace for me. Well, anyways, I hope things work out for you and that you end up deciding on the right school... UW!! :D
xaviera_o 03-28-2006, 06:58 PM i'm another out of stater who's in. not from the bay though. from Puerto Rico originally and somehow ended up in Texas since May... :)
looking forward to meeting you all soon!
i'm still in the excited phase (just found out today at work so haven't quite celebrated yet)!
WUcrewbie 03-29-2006, 10:23 AM Hey everyone-
I'm an MS1 up in Seattle right now, and I LOVE the UW! It's a really great school, and everyone here will go way out of their way to help you with whatever you need. I just wanted to let you all know to PM me if you have any questions at all...
:D

I'm pretty excited about going to the Pullman site--I'll probably volunteer, unless someone convinces me otherwise. I haven't talked to a single person who didn't love the WWAMI-land experience. And there are other benies to living on the east side of the state--cheap rent, reduced chance of being crushed by a Starbucks franchise falling from the sky, cheap rent, the list goes on and on...Plus, the snow in the Selkirks is better than Cascade cement.
lizanne11 03-31-2006, 11:27 PM Hey all, I'm excited to be able to post in this thread! I'm from Seattle and will hopefully stay in Seattle next year. If anyone needs any info about the Seattle area, feel free to ask! I would recommend living in the Montlake area. It is close to the medical center/health sciences building, where the med. school is. I currently live on Eastlake which is a nice area (closer to downtown Seattle), but it's farther from the medical center.

I talked to someone in the admissions office the other day and she said that there is no deposit at this point, which is wierd but nice!
Also, is anyone going to the OOS second look weekend? I can't decide if I want to go...I mean, I'd LOVE to go and meet people, but I can't really afford any more time off from work. Thoughts?

I'm definitely going to the OOS second look weekend. (I am, however, going to have to miss the Saturday activities due to UCSF's Accepted Students Weekend.) I think it'll be a great opportunity to meet a lot of new people - including us other OOS'ers! To top it off, it's an all expenses paid trip, so it's hard to resist.

Beaner81 04-04-2006, 03:33 PM Hey! I just got my flight confirmation from UW and I'm heading up there eve of 19th. When are you going to fly up?

titoincali 04-04-2006, 04:46 PM If I go, it will be the morning of the 20th out of SFO.
That was my first flight option but because I'm leaving on Saturday AM for a wedding, I wanted to have that entire morning in Seattle to check out the school.
chip77 04-05-2006, 12:13 AM I agree! It sounds awesome. Are you trying to decide between UCSF and UW?
Yes, I am. It's a tough decision, so I'm hoping that these preview days will help me decide :)

I'm actually heading up the eve of the 18th. I wanted the extra day to soak in Seattle before the UW activities.
adiddas125 04-05-2006, 08:32 AM So are all of the OOS going to be here on the 22nd and 23rd? If so I might just come and mingle. :)

Hey chip77!
I think it's great that you're heading up on the 18th. I would have loved to do that but since I'm already missing two Calc classes I couldn't get myself to miss three in a row! I'm really excited about the trip. My friend has already planned a crazy drinking/karaoke fest for wednesday night to celebrate!
Have you received anything about the agenda of activities?
xaviera_o 04-12-2006, 05:31 PM I finally get to post my date! Called today and they got me my ticket and I am, strangely enough, taking a flight out of SF the morning of the 20th (after a flight from San Antonio to SF before that). So if any other out of stater is on my flight, say hi to me. I'll be the short boricua w/ a tattoo on my neck (my most identifiable characteristic)...
Trail Boss 04-15-2006, 12:36 AM Anybody else get in from Oregon? My advisor says that I am the only one from OSU for as long as she has been working here (at least ten years). I am searching for a roomate too, any rural people? My grandparents are from Mallot, WA anybody from that neck of the woods need a roomate?
Trail Boss 04-15-2006, 12:38 AM does anyone know when will we receive financial packets? I know JEfferson students already got their financial packet online.
What is this? I got into Jefferson in september and I haven't gotten a packet yet. Maybe I should check on this, I've kind of been ignoring everybody since I got into UW.
aspiringdoctor 04-16-2006, 07:14 PM hi everyone, I've just received a letter from the admission office saying that they will put me in the lottery for assignment to WSU. Did anyone esle receive this letter?

Yeah...Err, I went to school in Oregon (at Reed), but I think that's what you meant. Or did you apply OOS?
lizanne11 04-17-2006, 03:53 PM Hey, anyone considering applying for the summer program - where you take histology over the summer? Does anyone have any info. about the program - or advice from people who have done it in the past? I applied to the program. I received a letter last week letting me know they are in the process of evaluating applications and would let me know by June 1.

Yup, I have about 30,000 also. That's a fair chunk of change. But at least it can all be covered by federal aid. I'm so glad I don't need to get private loans!
Peter Griffen 04-24-2006, 06:39 AM Add me to the $30,000 club. It seems like tons of money, but really when I think about how much I would have had to borrow for other schools, it doesn't seem bad at all.

Hey guys, Did you all get an email regarding the invite to the $30K club?
Second Lookers, it was nice meeting all you! Have you decided to firm up here?
Its a great school.
adiddas125 04-24-2006, 08:35 AM Oh some of you were talking about Craig's list? What in the world is a craigs list? I am really confused. Is Craig a friend of you all? Do you all happen to know each other mutually?

HAHA! Go to seattle.craigslist.org and you'll see what we're talking about.
Great to meet you, by the way. You should have joined us on Friday night, it was fun to finally let loose!

Soo...how did it go? I'd love to hear anything and everything about the UW. How many people were there? How were the classes? Did you actually find fun places to go out on Friday night?

It was great. The administration, faculty, current students, alumni, and future students that I met were amazing. I got really excited about the programs in place at UW AND Seattle is beautiful (even when it was raining). I managed to go out 2 of the 3 nights I was there and had fun each time so I have no worries about not finding things to do or not meeting interesting people!

Awesome, thanks! One of the things I'm a bit nervous about re: Seattle is that I love the diversity of the bay area - I love to dance, I love hip-hop and Reggaeton and all of the energy and things going on in SF. I'm worried that Seattle might not have that - but it sounds like you really loved it, and you're from the Bay Area, so I trust you!
ebeth1 04-24-2006, 11:57 AM Hey all. I spent half of the day with you on Friday (from Lunch on, I already live in Seattle), and I had a great time meeting everyone!!!! I really hope that you enjoyed your time in Seattle, and that you decide to attend UW. I love it in Seattle, and I can't wait to see everyone later this summer. As for apartment and house hunting, you can use craigslist, and I have also seen great rentals on nwsource.com. Again, loved meeting everyone on Friday!!

adiddas125 04-24-2006, 12:31 PM  Oh... For the whole time so far, I thought Craig's list was this list generated by Craig himself.
I mingled and visited with some of the people who were at Second look had to skip the dinner on Friday due to some things planned before the agenda was sent out. Everyone seems so awesome!!! Now I am real excited to get this medical school thing started. :)
As far as housing for me, I am gonna try and get into the University Housing (Graduate Apartments). Its very comparable to off campus housing in terms of price... ~550/mo. All utilities are included and such. The only draw back is roomate assignment might be a crap shoot, but with my own bed, and living at the library it will probably work out...
Not to mention the housing is real close to the Health Sciences (about a 5-7 min walk on the Burke-Gilman).
Its weird how the weather is super nice, and for us its kinda getting warm. Its blue skies, and very sunny and warm. Too bad it rained lightly on Friday, other wise the tour on campus would have been a great treat!
I am still laughing my ass off about the Craigs list thingy.

I think it was really started by Craig. It might still be owned by him but I heard rumors of a sale.
BTW, you will officially be teased about this for the next four years! :meanie:

xaviera_o 04-24-2006, 01:20 PM alright all, I just withdrew the spots I was holding at other schools and sent an e-mail to UW changing my acceptance to firm! It's official and I couldn't be anymore excited about it. Kinda takes away from my motivation to study when I feel I should be out celebrating though.
Who else has a new favorite hoodie? :)

Snoqualmie (prob spelling it wrong) Falls was absolutely beautiful. I'm down to drive you out on the weekend if we are both in the premat. Looking forward to just chilling on a rock for a couple of hours once its warmer out.
It was only 4 of us at that point though. Then we had lunch together and all went our separate ways to see family members and all that. So you didn't miss much.
I didn't want to leave though... Oh well, just 1.5 more months til moving day.

Speaking of premat...
I am trying to quit my job early and on good terms so that I can apply for that. Does anyone know a. how hard it is to get into, and b. how useful it is? I would imagine that it would be good for me because I've been away for school for a year, and I want to get to know some of my future Seattle classmates since I spend the first year in Pullman.
By the way, what's all this I've been hearing about the $30K club?? I haven't gotten any kind of financial packet yet. Has everyone received theirs or just some of you?

I didn't receive anything in the mail yet about financial aid status, but if you have signed up for your UWNetID (something you can do once you received the Enrollment Confirmation Acknowledgement in the mail) you can check your status online. Once you have a UWNetID go to MyUW, sign-in and click on the financial aid status link. For a few days my financial aid status said "processing", but as of today I can view my preliminary award.

The students I spoke to who did it last year seemed to think it was really useful since it frees up a big part of your schedule during first year. And it's also done early enough so you still get to enjoy some of your summer.
Mainly they said that the people you do it w/ you continue to be friends w/ thruout the rest of your time at UW.
As far as how hard to get in. I'm not really sure. Most students who did it told me that as long as you applied you'd be in, but no one really gave me any stats on how many apply and how many get in or anything like that so not sure if that's true.

I heard around 24 apply and 16 get in. HOWEVER, I asked several people this question and many seemed hesitant to answer, not sure why.
swman, you can always call the OMCA and ask them about the program.
adiddas125 04-25-2006, 06:27 PM So by my count I see that we have 98 days till first day of classesand 89 days till Orientation!!! Jeez I cant wait. Are any of you doing fun things this summer?

My summer has improved substantially in the last couple days. I worked up the courage to quit my monotonous phlebotomy job early (end of May instead of end of July) so that I can do the premat program. I also plan to spend more time with my mom, 3 younger brothers, and 1 younger sister. My supervisor will give me the big guilt trip but who cares, I'm going to med school!!
I'm thinking about sneaking in a trip to Tahoe or Vegas right before premat, and after premat is over I've got just 2 weeks before classes start in Pullman. So there you have it... my summer in a nutshell.

I wish I could do the premat. I might even qualify since June marks the 3 year anniversary since I graduated. Staying at my job until the beginning of August, however, gives me a pretty big chunk of change, as I'm getting a bonus then.
I don't think I've said anything on this particular forum (did on the app thread) yet. Anyhow, hi everyone! I'm looking forward to meeting and going to school with all of you. :)

Thats awesome swman!!! I signed up for the PRE-MAT program too. I am going to quit my job at the grocery store the week of graduation. (In June.) So that means I need to start reminding them now. They are going to freak out because we are short staffed, and they were probably counting on me to work a lot this summer. (They dont know I have gotten into med school yet) I probably should tell them.
I also want to just relax all summer long, besides the Pre-mat thing. Maybe I will have a lot of bbq's with friends and family. I also want to spend more time with my family before I go to school.
I might plan a trip to Hawaii to visit a friend of mine, but it is under consideration since I plan on making some big purchases.
Other than that I will be just hanging out in Seattle enjoying my last "true" official summer break.

Hey, adiddas125, what grocery store do you work at? The reason I ask is that I worked at Safeway throughout high school and undergrad (hence the name swman), and am still technically employed by them although I only work there every once in a blue moon now with the full time phlebotomy job...I thought I was the only med student to come from a grocery store.

You worked for SLAVEWAY??? I work(ed) for Albertson's. I really dislike working at that place. I am a checker there, and I have worked there since I was in high school (since ~2000). Going on 6 glorious years of putting up with price checks and mean customers throwing hissy fits about the prices.
I had a customer once spit in my face because she thought it was ridiculous that "I" was charging her so much for her loaf of bread and peanut butter. Needless to say I have a lot of intersting experiences. It did support me through undergrad so I cannot complain at all!
CostalShowers 05-05-2006, 11:57 AM Just wanted to bump this thread up a bit, and say hi to all you wonderful future UW students. I have dropped all my other schools and will be headed to UW for sure next year.

i will be leaving san antonio, texas (gracias a Dios) on June 1st and will be there 4 or 5 days later after taking in a few sights along the way.
i'm so ready to quit work too-- may 25th!!!

That's a great trip. Especially Yosemite! It's beautiful right now. You have to make sure to stop in Napa. That's my first stop on my way up to Seattle! Gotta stock up on my favorite Cali wine before I leave the state.
It sounds like we'll be taking the same route (at least from Northern Cali and up). I can't believe this move is happening so quickly!

it's less than a month before i leave. can't believe it, it felt like forever to wait before and now i'm just about to be there...
i'm gonna miss breakfast tacos, but that's about all i'll miss about TX (alright, i like BBQ too...)

close to UW if possible. i'd love to be w/in a half an hours walk of the med school but i'm pretty sure that's not gonna happen since i'm not willing to go that high on rent so i'll settle for w/in half an hours bus ride.
you?
Trail Boss 05-10-2006, 07:10 PM Any other OOS students having trouble with fin aid? I was only offered 42000 in loans and it says cost is 53000. I know at second look Diane had said we wouldn't find out about the School of Medicine Scholarship until (I think) mid-June b/c they tend to get the applications in at the last minute. If she has had your scholarship application for a while, though, you should call her b/c she can probably tell you unofficially how much you'd be awarded. She was able to tell me when I met with her that weekend.
It can be an award of up to 10,000 dollars and they tend to award out-of-state students more to compensate for the tuition difference.

So I'm a little confused as well. My unmet need is exactly $10K (the rest is in loans). Is this what everyone else also has?
adiddas125 05-10-2006, 10:30 PM About the SOM scholarship, I went and talked with Diane today. She said that SOM scholarships should be avail early Aug - right before school starts.
What do you mean by un-met need? You still have 10K that needs to be out of pocket or you need to find another source???
My remaining need was calculated to be 0. I was awarded 31K, I guess that makes me part of the 30K club!

In my financial aid package (on myuw), my "unmet need" after EFC (out of pocket) and aid package (loans) was $10K, i.e. need to find another source. Which confuses me -- why wouldn't they offer me loans for the total amount?

Strange, I never had an 'unmet need' section on myuw. Mine was basically total loan+resources = total budget. The loans didn't cover the whole budget. Are you paying in state tuition? If you are then the whole budget should fit within the maximum stafford loan amount. Is there an additional gap between the total budget and your loans beyond your computed resources? In any case, getting the loans to cover the entire budget took about 5 minutes on the phone with Diane.
adiddas125 05-11-2006, 08:20 AM On myUW I dont see a unmet need section. I do have a section called "Summary of your Financial Aid"
In that section I have total budget, -Computer Total Resources (I am assuming this is the EFC that was calculated by fafsa), =UW Need sections. My remaining need potion says 0. I dont have an unmet need.
I am a bit confused by that. Perhaps you should give diane a call?
almost_there 05-11-2006, 02:28 PM In any case, getting the loans to cover the entire budget took about 5 minutes on the phone with Diane.

5 minutes on the phone with Diane = Fixed loans so that they cover the whole amount (she said that she probably just mistyped the numbers initially). :)
Thanks for the info, guys!

I was originally misclassified as out-of-state and while my residency status was being audited I was awarded financial aid. My original FA package fell almost 20K short of the projected OOS budget. When my audit was successful and I was reclassified as a WA resident, my FA package got updated and met all my need. The unmet need category went away on MyUW.
Hope that helps.
Anybody else going to Pullman/Moscow WWAMI-land? I'm wondering why the orientation is so much earlier than the Seattle orientation. Is there a gap between orientation and the start of classes? I probably have information on this at home, but I'm at work and just got to wondering about it.

Hi there,
I'm going to WWAMI land too. Did you just find out or have you known for awhile? Anyhow, orientation is earlier in Pullman for the simple reason that classes start 3 weeks earlier there: August 14 compared to September 4 or 5 (I think) in Seattle. I think it has something to do with the Semester system they use at Washington State University whereas UW is on a quarter system.
Hope that helps.
EvolutionKills 05-12-2006, 03:50 PM I volunteered for the Pullman WWAMI land, so I'm assuming I'll be there. I haven't officially been told.
Does the difference in scheduling systems between the schools make for other scheduling anomalies? Will we get out earlier for S1?

I'm sure you'll get to go there, since most entering Wash residents avoid Pullman like the plague, when asked to choose between Pullman and Seattle. I don't know if we get out earlier, but I was told at the WWAMI orientation day in March that there are definitely other scheduling anomalies, ie classes are not taken in the same sequences or for the same duration of time as they are in Seattle.

I think Moscow/Pullman finishes with classes earlier than Seattle. I am pretty sure that this year's WWAMI students had their last final this last week. Seattle students don't have their last final until around June 1st this year.
The class time pretty much evens out in the end.

sparkysgirl 05-14-2006, 02:26 AM Hi guys! This is my first official post here, since I just got in a couple days ago. I'm so excited, the U-dub is amazing, it's been my dream school since I started thinking about being a doctor. Anyway, I'm on vacation in Greece right now, so I really need to get off this computer and onto the beach. See you guys this fall!!! :)
Seagal 05-15-2006, 11:25 PM Hi guys,
I can finally post here. I am so very excited. :) :)
chip77 05-16-2006, 02:50 AM Okay, so I officially withdrew my acceptance from UW. This was indeed a very difficult decision for me, as I know those out of state acceptances are highly coveted. However, I believe that this is the best decision for me personally. To titoincali and xaviera_o - it was such a pleasure meeting you both at the second look days. You guys would've been awesome classmates, and I'm sure you both will be successful and do great things at UW. And thanks to everyone on here who helped answer my questions and concerns. Take care...

Well, it would've been great to have you as a classmate but still I'm happy for you. UCSF is an amazing school and I'm sure you'll do great there.
Good luck on these next 4 years!!! :)

CostalShowers 05-17-2006, 02:37 PM May 17th (today) is the 2nd round of the WWAMI lottery.
Being from Idaho, it's like I already won and I didn't even have to enter.
sparkysgirl 05-18-2006, 02:29 AM Two things:
1) I haven't mailed in my forms with my WWAMI preference yet, since I'm out of the country, will I still be in this lottery? I know Spokane's great but I live with my grandma in Seattle and it really helps the family worry less with someone around, so I'd prefer Seattle, but I realize the UW is the UW and I can't complain.
2) (another problem with my untimely trip) My parents recieved forms about my residency in the mail, how strict are they about getting these back in 2 weeks? Does everyone get these or am I being audited?
PS, the admissions office knows I'm out of twon, so I've already dealt with the whole accepting the offer thing.
Sorry this is so long and rambling, but I just got off a 16hr ferry and my inbox was exploding with stuff from the UW and my parents about the UW so I'm a little frazzled.
Thanks for the help :)

Just curious, did anybody NOT get accepted into the program by OMCA??
Oh and Kim,
I plan on just living in Tacoma and taking the bus from the Tacoma Dome. There is a route 586 bus that drops you off across the street from the UW Health Sciences building. I had already planned on lots of lonely bus rides for 6 weeks, but it might be more fun if I had somebody to talk to.

Yeah, can't say im not bummed out. It would have been nice to get histo out of the way, but I cannot complain since I am in my dream school.
I am kinda glad I didnt put in my 2 week notice last week. For some reason I had this feeling that I should wait till I saw my store director (the highest incharge) to let him know instead of telling my night front end supervisor know. I guess it worked out!
First off I will try and finish off beating Zelda:Windwaker, I havent finished it since I havent had time. Also go back and play some chrono trigger (SNES) and I'll probably try and run 350-400 miles this summer and do some hiking and camping with friends and family. Also, I will throw in some research into the mix too! Cant keep my brain from rotting!

As far as living situation, I leave TX on the 2nd and should be up in Seattle by the 8th (I'm driving) and hopefully I'll find an apt to move into once I get in. If I can't find a place available until later on, I'll stay w/ my brother in Bellevue until whenever I can move into my new apt. Since I'm out-of-state, whatever apt I get will prob be my home for the next couple of years so I'm hoping to find it sooner than later so I can get settled.
Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to getting there!

It would be fun to have someone to talk to you during the ride. Do you know how long the ride takes? Also, do you still plan to take that CPR class on June 9. Anyone going to be in the seattle area this june? I think im going the harborview Med center training route. I'll report how much it will cost and the times too.
swman 05-24-2006, 12:29 AM Have you decided where youre going for your trip?
Well that kinda depends on whether or not I get into premat. Not getting into premat would give me a wide open time frame and I could take my time to think about where I really want to go and could end up going anywhere (within financial reason).
But if I do get into premat (still haven't gotten my letter)I would have 2 weeks before orientation starts in Pullman. In that case I plan to go to Lake Tahoe for 3 days or so immediately after premat is over, then when I move to Pullman I will spend 5 days or so vacationing in Coeur d Alene with my girlfriend (never been, but I heard it's awesome in the summertime). Are you going to be working throughout the summer?

adiddas125 05-24-2006, 08:51 AM So here is the low down on the CPR/BLS stuff. At lease for Harborview Medical Center. For me this is a convenient location for me instead of going to the cascade learning center for CPR lessons. Plus I think the times are much more suitable. Harborview has training sessons from 1-6PM (5Hrs) while the Cascade one is from 6-9PM (3hrs). Though I might spend more time, the timing is better for me. Im pretty sleepy at 9PM haha.

The day in the life site that the students made is nice. It has a ton of great info. I'm an Idaho resident that will be in Moscow/Pullman. Most everyone that I have talked to said that Moscow is the way to go as far as place to live. I went there about a month ago and I really liked Moscow and Pullman. The housing in Moscow seemed to be a little cheaper compared to Pullman. I was able to find a really nice 2 bedroom apartment for my wife and I in Moscow for a great price.
I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in a few months! It's going to be fun.

Interesting. I have a friend who is a current 1st year who did pre-mat, and he got certified during pre-mat. The pre-mat coordinator is different from years past, I know they switched things up for Pre-Mat this year (in terms of coordinator).
The whole timing of the pre-mat program kinda sucks then if you are a UW undergrad and got into the program. That wouldnt leave you much breathing room in terms of trying to get your CPR req done before the UW asks for it.

Hi titoincali, even if UW wants the certification by august 14, for students who go to pullman where the orientation starts on aug 11-12, we don't have a lot of time, and from what i heard, the course only offers once a month, so it makes the time tighter.

sparkysgirl 05-25-2006, 09:22 AM So I just checked my messages and found out I'm going to be in Seattle. I'm really excited, but a little bummed out since so many of you guys will be in Spokane. We'll just have to make sure we meet up in 07.
MorningGlory 05-25-2006, 01:16 PM Don't they have a stethescope ceremony or something like that instead?
Umm.. kind of. :) You all just stand in a huge line in a crowded room and as you cross the front of the room (not really on a stage or anything) you shake one of the deans' hands and receive a stethoscope. No name announcement or official picture taking.. (except from the parents).
It's still kind of fun though, but doesn't have the same weight I think a white coat ceremony will have.

and when is that stethoscope ceremony, MorningGlory? Also I've just talked to one of the WWAMI students and she told me that at all the WWAMI schools, except Seattle, there's a special white coat ceremony at the end of the first year. So, if you are incoming WWAMI students like I am, then we can have two white coat ceremonies. isn't that cool?

Hmm.. well, I'm a Seattle student, so I can't say how the WWAMI schools do it. But for Seattle, we had a "family day" maybe the first weekend after actual school started (not just after orientation). It's a time for your families to come to the school with you and hear from the deans, counselors, etc. about the kinds of things med school students go through. (It's also another chance for students to ask senior students about classes, how to deal with anatomy, and so on.) It's a morning to lunch activity.. so no biggie.

So does this mean that all years from medical school partake in this event? We get stethoscopes already??!? Wow, I am a bit surprised by this!
MorningGlory 05-25-2006, 03:01 PM So does this mean that all years from medical school partake in this event? We get stethoscopes already??!? Wow, I am a bit surprised by this!
Not quite.. they have a student panel of like 5 students that we can ask questions of. And I think they give us stethoscopes to commemorate our entrance into med school somehow. The white coat ceremony really is more appropriate for the transition between 2nd and 3rd years. I bet the WWAMI sites have their white coat early so that the professors that took part in their teaching can give them a sort of private graduation since they won't necessarily be here for the 2nd to 3rd year transition (as far as I know).
And we didn't really even use our stethoscopes until spring quarter when we started to learn the physical exam. Some students used them in their preceptorships, however,

MorningGlory, did you participate in the Premat program? if yes, may be you can offer me some advices on the histology book.
For the histology course, we require to buy "basic Histology Text & Atlas", but the book "DiFiore's Atlas of Histology with Functional Correlations" is optional, you already took histology, do you think I should buy this DiFiore book even though it is optional? also do you have any advices for us who will take Histology soon? thanks

I actually didn't participate in the premat program (although now I wish I had). Those of you who have been accepted will definitely be in a good position for the second half of fall quarter. I would definitely recommend doing a preceptorship then. I felt a little overwhelmed after anatomy was over and just wanted a break, but this really would've been a great time period to preceptor with someone. There was a lot of down time this year during that time.. although I think I've heard the curriculum committee is planning on adding some more biochem.
In any case, I'm getting off track. The same professors teach both the premat class and the regular fall histology class. So, knowing that, I really don't think the DiFiore optional book is necessary. The Basic Histology book was just fine on its own. If I remember correctly, I wouldn't worry much about anything but skimming the chapters before the lectures. There's a lot of info in the book that you don't need for the tests. But it does provide a good overview and clarification for any points that weren't covered well in lecture. Do the labs and try not to get too frustrated at first if you can't figure out what structures you should be seeing on the slides. It will all come together eventually and you will know what everything is. The professors are really nice people, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also, for the tests, they do ask more than just "ID this structure." So the functions, physiology is also important. For most of the classes in general throughout the year, focus on material they cover in lecture. Any extra information that is in the book that isn't really talked about in class, don't worry about as much.
If you guys want to see more advice from previous years, check out this link while it's still online (until they replace it with comments from this year's class):

Hmm.. I just checked and realized they don't have advice for histology on that site. Oh well, in any case, I wouldn't sweat the histology course too much. It's really not that bad and you guys will all do just fine. Just make sure to keep up since concepts build on each other. And throughout the year, making your own summarized notes really does help.

lizanne11 05-28-2006, 05:55 PM i'm sorry to hear that lizanne, so what are you going to do this summer?
I have a few trips planned. Other then that... sleep...? :o
Have any of you at the WSU/UI site heard from the WWAMI offices there? Also, do we need to CPR certification by June 1st or the beginning or orientation? Thanks
Fishy-Cracker 05-28-2006, 09:40 PM Long time reader of SDN, First time poster....
I was accepted to the UW a few months ago. Since my family (wife and two kids) are already settled here in Pullman, I volunteered for a WWAMI spot. I have known students in the program for the last three years and they all loved their time here. I am excited to start, and look forward to meeting all of you who "won" the WWAMI lottery.
I spoke with the WWAMI office at WSU and supposedly we all go whitewater rafting for part of orientation. That includes the Idaho students as well.
As for the screen name.... it was what my daughter was pestering me for while I was brainstorming for screen name ideas.

Iwy Em Hotep 05-28-2006, 10:49 PM I'll help out answering some of these questions, as I'm putting off studying for boards for a few minutes.
Do the professors provide us with handouts/lecture notes for their lectures or are we required to print them off ourselves? Do all of the professors make their powerpoint slides available online for us to download?
Most classes you'll get a syllabus, which may or may not have the handouts in them. Some professors will provide you with handouts, but most professors will put the notes online for you to print out and bring to lecture. A couple of professors are still behind on this, so you might have to bug them a bit to get PP slides ahead of time.
Last one: are the lectures recorded and available online to listen to later on? I know some other schools that do this but haven't heard if UW is one of them.
We (MSA) have tried to get this done, but it's not going to happen any time soon.
To answer the question about histology - I really would not sweat it. If you're premat, it's all you have to focus on. If you're not, your first month of school will be so all-encompassing with anatomy that when that's finally done, histology (and everything else) will seem like such a vacation. Plus, the chair does a great job with practice slides and questions. My personal opinion is that a textbook is nice but probably not required. Do learn it very well though, as you will expected to have a good grasp of the normal before they through abnormal stuff at you in second year.
As for the white coat ceremonies, the WWAMI sites get them early, as they do spend more required time in the clinic in the first year. We all have the white coat transition ceremony this week, and we all had the stethoscope ceremony in early first year.

A couple of professors are still behind on this, so you might have to bug them a bit to get PP slides ahead of time.
More on the handouts:
I know I was a little confused on this when I first started, but "syllabus" in med school means course packet that has all the lecture slides and/or essential reading material for the class.
~55% of the classes have syllabi that you can purchase at the copy center.
~35% of teachers give you handouts either at the beginning of the quarter or at the beginning of each lecture.
~10% don't make handouts
BUT, practically all the professors (99%) will have online ppt slides for you to access. Like Iwy said, they're not always up on time, but they are available eventually.
I don't remember there being a handout or a syllabus for histology (I may have forgotten).. but you really want the color ppt slides anyway. And there are just TOO many slides for the anatomy lectures, so I don't think it's worth it really to print them out. Some people did since it's helpful to write notes instead of type. Anyway, probably TMI.. you'll figure out a style that works for you.
aspiringdoctor 05-31-2006, 11:54 AM thank you, Morningglory and Iwy for answering our questions. I hope you can give me some advices about this:
I know that on the orientation website, it says that PDA is required, but most medical students told me that we won't need it until later in second or third year, so I wonder to extent will we need the PDA in the first year at University of Washington?
thanks
aspiringdoctor 05-31-2006, 11:55 AM And oh, by the way, I didn't get into premat either.
I'm sorry, Jesse. Now I have to ride the bus alone. But well, I will see you in Pullman.
adiddas125 05-31-2006, 12:28 PM I plan on getting one around august (if price is right), or around christmas of this year. I want to get a hang of those PDA's before I start clerkships and I want things to be as seamless as possible.

Even in second year, my PDA does little more than keep my schedule, enable me to check email (has Wifi), and allow me to play Solitaire.

Ditto kinda. :) I didn't bother to buy one for first year. Most people didn't buy them actually. It'd be kinda nice to get acquainted, but in my opinion, unnecessary until 3rd year.

Hi, I saw your name on the premat email we received from Mary yesterday! I've been trying to match names because I can't wait to meet everyone.
Anyway, I've decided not to buy the atlas. I figured if I needed it I could get it later and people have responded that they didn't use it. It would be nice is one or two of us had it for reference though.
Thanks for the website. I'm going to check out the text on there.

I didn't buy it after reading MOrningglory's advices (check previous pages), besides the required textbook already has tons of materials. see you soon.
kcdiener 06-01-2006, 12:56 PM The day in the life site that the students made is nice.
It's going to be fun.

kcdiner - Hi I am a entering 2006 UW Med student! It looks like you'll be in MT? I'll be in seattle for the first year! I am from Seattle.
Tito - Are you going to be doing a lot of packing and moving then? The last few days here in Seattle have been incredibly rainy and very humid. Hopefully we'll see our Seattle summer again. I tried seeing if I could just take the histo course in summer without the stipend, but I guess you're not allowed to without the stipend... My summer is now going to consist of relaxing!

I'm trying to get motivated to do packing since the movers are coming Tuesday morning but it's not working. I guess I'm going to be pulling a lot of late nights until then!
Humidity? Nobody told me there would be humidity. Yuck.
It seems like they are changing a lot of things about premat this year. Interesting.

I didn't scour this thread since it's so long, but has there been any discussion about finding pet-friendly living arrangements near campus? I have a 70 lb lab mix who I would love to bring to school, but I've been living by myself for the past year and a half but I likely won't be able to afford such isolation in Seattle, and experience tells me that it's pretty tough to find a room for rent while bringing a dog.

According to the 'day in a life' website the building that we meet in is the physics and engineering building which is on 6th ave as well but about a mile from the house. if you already have a car then by all means bring it. you probably already know that we will attend WSU in pullman (8 miles away) three out of five days and most tests are given in pullman and the anatomy lab is in pullman, but you'll want to do all your shopping in moscow (wal-mart, winco etc..)
Another thing you might want to consider is the preceptorships (once per week). some of these may be in lewiston (35 miles) or colfax (20 miles from moscow), so a car will be essential if this is the case. there may be ways around it, but i am not aware of any.
Also, if you are from washington you will have your gym membership in pullman , not moscow.
let me know if I left something out or have any other questions.
Fishy-Cracker 06-08-2006, 10:52 PM hey all, i've also been lotteried out to wsu. Anybody looking for a potential roommate? I've been looking (from seattle) at places in pullman and hope to find some place relatively close to class and the gym. ideas?
there are a bunch of apartment complexes near the gym (within .5-1 mile) but these will not get you very close to morrill hall (WWAMI offices). the bus system is very good so it easy to catch a bus every 12-15 minutes that will drop you off at the gym.
I used to live in the Yakama apartments at the south end of campus. it was about a ten minute walk to morrill hall and had very easy access to the moscow pullman highway (won't have to go through town to get on). it would probably take you 5 minutes to walk to a bus stop to go to the gym.
where you want to live depends on so many things. PM me if you want to get in contact with me and I might be able to point you in the right direction.
I do not need a roomate...I have three already (wife and two kids)

Hey aspiringdoctor -
I have lived in Moscow for the last 2 years, so here's my two-cents on the car/bike question. If you already have a car, bring it. If you don't, I'm not sure I would get one just for the Moscow/Pullman experience. The town is small enough so that you can ride/walk everywhere and there is lots of transportation to Pullman, plus, I'm sure that you can borrow someone's vehicle to do grocery shopping.
As for a bike, I would highly recommend getting one. Parking on UI sorta sucks, and the town is small enough that, whenever I drive around, I feel a bit silly (I think it takes longer to drive than to bike). This is a very bike-friendly town. And it's a quick 8-mi bike to Pullman on a nice trail.
Hope that helps.
If anyone else has questions about this area, feel free to ask me.
Can't wait to meet everyone!

Hey Squid,
Should I bring my mountain bike or road bike? Is the trail or path that goes from Moscow to Pullman paved? or is it dirt/gravel?

the Chipman trail is paved. it is very nice, not shaded in most areas, but well maintained and is surrounded by vegetation and runs along a stream.

thank you for your advices. Since you already done with your first year, you probably can give us some advices on textbooks. I heard from most medical students from other schools that M1 students shouldn't buy every required textbook, is that true for UWSOM? can you recommend some important textbook or review books should we buy for this coming year?
for gross anatomy, what atlas or textbook is most useful for you?
thank you for taking time to help us. I'm sure everyone here truly appreciate your help and advices.

Actually. . I'm going to be in your class, so, I can't give much information on the textbooks. .sorry. .
As for bikes, If you have both, bring both - There are great mt. biking trails around here, and the rolling palouse makes for awesome road biking as well. For commuting, either will work.
Fishy-Cracker 06-09-2006, 10:24 PM in case there was a misunderstanding, let me clarify that I am not a current WWAMI student. I will be starting first year in pullman/moscow with the rest of you this coming august. I don't think squid is a current WWAMI student either (not sure).
Only two more months before the madness begins.....I can hardly wait (seriously)

Speaking of bikes, and this is for the seattle folks out there, is it even realistic to bike to and from school if I'm not some super-buff-Le-Tour-wannabe? It seems like seattle boasts some nasty hills. Am I going to die huffing and puffing to school?

Biking:
Seattle is hilly, but the area around the U District is not. Anywhere near the Burke-Gilman trail will be fine.

Depending on where you live, you may not have to worry about the hills at all on the way to school. E.g. the burke-guilman trail has no hills at all. You should be ok on hills as long as you can gear way down on your bike (you have the small chain ring on the front--not all road bikes have it, but I think all mountain bikes do) and have some sort of way to have your feet firmly atached to your pedals--such as clipless pedals. The clipless or cages let you use your hamstrings in your pedal stroke (pedaling in circles), which makes going up hills a *lot* easier.

that's a relief. I got a road bike about 8 months ago 'cause my boyfriend is a huge cycling buff, but I've been used to riding the relatively flat-roads of st. louis. I guess I'll have to work on my climbing when I get to the NW!

Iwy Em Hotep 06-12-2006, 03:22 PM Oh, right. Sorry - the 2nd years are all in Seattle, so 1st students who are not in Seattle may not be able to arrange to get books and stuff (varies by person).

This is true. For UW (& WWAMI students since you guys use the same books).. you don't need to buy every required textbook. For some classes, lecture slides are enough. Other classes, a syllabus is provided which you can either purchase or read online if available.
As far as anatomy goes, this year we had one textbook "Gray's Anatomy for Students" and you have a choice of Netter's or Grant's atlases to buy. If you are a book kind of person, Gray's was nice to give a detailed explanation of things, but probably not absolutely necessary if you're really trying to save money. I'd say that one is a personal choice. As for which atlas is better, I prefer Netter's myself (plus the flash cards), but other people prefer Grant's. I would suggest looking at both before you decide which one you'd like to buy. Also, there is a required Langman's embryology.. I personally did not like it. It's difficult to read, but it does have everything you need I guess. The embryology portion of the class was actually a little more difficult in my opinion, so you probably should get some sort of book to help.
Extra study stuff:
I can give you guys a list of other review books and such that I found helpful, but please don't take these as necessary. Just throwing stuff out there. :)
Fall quarter
High Yield Embryology helped organize and simplify things quite nicely.
Winter
BRS Pathology & BRS Physiology
(Some other people recommend baby robbins)
Spring
Micro cards by Lippincott
Micro made ridiculously simple
Anyway, your 2nd year big docs will also let you know what they thought worked for them.

I'm pretty sure it comes on the acknowledgement, I know I got it about 2 weeks after most of the mail.
aspiringdoctor 06-13-2006, 08:56 PM You'll get it after you've sent in your deposit. I just got mine yesterday in the mail. If you want your PAC though, you can call the school and ask for it. I did that before I got mine in the mail. I'm not sure what the phone number is though; you'll find it as you try to log on to MyUW probably.
$100 deposit? I don't remember doing that. when did they ask you to pay the deposit? I received the Enrollment Confirmation Instructions to set up email and myuw long time ago, but never get the request to send in the deposit.

they did not ask me to send in a deposit either. It may be a waitlist thing, but i don't know for sure.

mercury bubbles 06-14-2006, 11:14 AM $145 a month!! 1 1/2 blocks from campus, the #48 will take you straight to Health Sciences, water & utilities included, available July 1st.
GREAT DEAL! The catch? You must be FEMALE and an EOP student. Don't know what EOP is? Then you probably aren't a member, so please don't respond and ask.
(Side Note: The only reason I'm giving this up is because UW rejected me, so I'll be attending medical school in either NY or Miami next year.)

I talked with the UI WWAMI folks last week and they said that the WSU/UI people should be getting a package soon. They said they are mailing them on the 16th, so we should get them next week.
Does UW have "preferred lenders" for our federal loans? Does anyone know how this works. This is my first time taking out loans and I have no idea how this all works. Thanks in advance!

I love the Italy-USA game yesterday, the USA team played really well. I hate the referee, he really ruined the game, the yellow card that he gave Pope in 2nd half is not justified at all. I hope we win Ghana, so we can have a chance to advance forward.
I agree, addidas, about the game today between Korea and France, Korean team played really well.

adiddas125 06-19-2006, 08:44 AM I was physically drained after watching the Italy match...I can only imagine how tired the actual American players must have been. If only McBride hadn't been in the way on that Beasley goal; I would have loved to see the faces of Italy had the US won. Have any of you read Michael Davies' world cup diary on espn.com? It's pretty funny. He reported minute by minute of the Italy match. The best comment: "9:06 p.m: Minute 1: First Italian whine within 10 seconds." Here's the website if anyone's interested: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=davies/060617
I really think that cheap shot on McBride was indicative of the Italian team. They havent played really cleanly against other teams. (sorry if I am pissing off any Italian(s) + Italian fans) I do think they will easily coast into the round of 16. Are there any surprises for you all? I am surprised by Iran's two loses, and that the Aussies put up a decent fight against the Brazilians. It goes to show you that Brazil isnt as invincible as people have been commenting on.
Anyone going to any rallys? I'm going to one this Friday, when Korea plays the Swiss. Of course the Red Devils will win! My prediction, 2-0.

For those who will be in Seattle, have you guys already found a place? (Sorry if this is a repeat) Does anyone have a long commute? Like 30-40 mins? We are trying to balance distance/commute with a nice place to live.
ahumdinger 06-22-2006, 10:44 AM I haven't found a place to live yet. My parents are interested in purchasing property in Seattle, so I will be looking for roommates! They have been looking mainly north of campus, but they are not sure of the commute time. Some places they've looked are as far as 125th street. Is that a long commute? I am still in St. Louis, so I have not been participating on the househunt. Ideally I'd like to keep my travel time to 15-20 minutes. Seagal, where are you and your husband looking?
Seagal 06-22-2006, 10:51 AM 15-20 min commute sounds great ahumdinger. We are looking towards lake forest park/ballinger, shoreline and around those areas. The houses around there are pretty pricey.
Any thoughts on whether 15-20 mins extra should be a great factor in evaluating houses? We would probably be staying there for at least 4-7 years.

hey sparkysgirl, thanks for the link! my dad keeps asking me how long it would take from points A, B, and C to school by bus, as if I'm some expert, having never lived in seattle! This will definitely come in handy, as I am considering not having a car at school.

On the housing note, I'm hoping to live in the Capital Hill area, and would love 1-2 other roommates. I'd be happy to live with people of any gender, and am really looking for people who like a school/life balance - I'm sure we'll all be studying a lot, but it would be nice to live with people who also like going out, having people over, exploring Seattle, etc. PM me if you're interested!
almost_there 06-23-2006, 04:32 PM Hey folks,
For those of you looking for housing, my space in the house I share with 3 others is coming available. It's really nice -- next to University Village (nice shopping area w/Safeway and QFC), 10 minutes on the Burke Gilman (paved bike trail) from UW, or 5 minute bus (stop outside of house), built in the 1930s but renovated, with hardwood floors and lots of light and space. My roommates are super cool -- a cello-playing software engineer, a dental student who likes working on cars/motorcycles, and an artist/neuroscience PhD student. You would be sharing the upstairs (your own bedroom) with the artist/PhD student. $425/month + utilities and deposit. PM me if you are interested!

ahumdinger 06-29-2006, 10:04 AM Gripe Post:
I officially hate Hall Health. So I've been trying to set up an appt for an immunization record review (I always have issues with my TB test, so I wanted to discuss it in person and bring in all my records) and I emailed myshots or whatever the email was, and i got an auto reply that said for me to call and leave a message to set up an appt, and give my best times to come in. So I did that. And never heard back, but then I did get an email reply from a nurse at Hall Health to say that she had set me up for August 1 at 10:30. I distinctly said in my phone message that after August 3, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt (maybe she didn't listen to voicemail) and wrote back with a nice explanation about how I'm moving back to Washington from St. Louis on July 31 (and emphasized DRIVING!) and that after August 3 would be best. I even said that I would be in Seattle on August 7 for cpr training so an appt that day would be super.
So what kind of response do I get? an email saying that she's scheduled me for August 2 at 930am. Great. Thanks for accommodating my request. How long does she think it takes to drive from St. Louis to Washington? Not to mention, I have to drive up from Longview WA at 7am. Did she miss the "after august 3?" Is it just me or are all student health centers notoriously horrible?
by the way, where did everyone go on this thread? I feel like I'm talking to myself.

Goodness. Thats seriously not fun! I havent had the best response with them when I got food poisoning last year. I would try and call again and see if you can get it changed. Driving from longview Washington is not fun. Its a long drive with nothing to really see at all.
So are you driving all the way from MO? I would imagine you would need some sort of rental moving vehicle to move all your stuff, no?

they are a bit unorganized. I was scheduled for two appointments, one of which is on the 9th. I haven't canceled it but maybe you can take that one. The email lady schedules it early. When i called to schedule they scheduled it late. Strange. Email me if you have questions.

longview to Seattle isn't that bad. only 2 hours. I'm used to driving from stl to chicago, so it's short in comparison (and driving through illinois is DEFINITELY boring). But the 930 appt times does me I have to get up early.
I'm driving with my mom from st. louis to Longview, a drive that my mom has done twice!! So she's the veteran and hopefully I can convince her to do most of the driving. I'm a huge packrat, but I'm trying to get over it, and sell/throw out most of my stuff and just have books and clothes to bring home. definitely not enough to fill a rental truck. So depending on how many boxes I end up with, I might ship some and drive the rest back. I'm driving my dog too so she takes up a lot of storage space.

were you actually able to get ahold of someone on the phone? I will try to call again, i guess.
adiddas125 06-29-2006, 10:23 AM The drive from Longview to Seattle sucks with Thanksgiving traffic. It took me 4.5 hours!
You know on the note about books... I was arranging my books the other day and I still have my darn physics book. I even thought about bringing that book with me to med school, I was thinking it might be nice for reference. Then I woke up.

haha! yeah, textbooks become obsolete so fast since they keep coming out with newer editions. Always sell your textbooks as soon as you're done with them! if you list them now on Amazon or Half.com, you may still be able to sell it! When I graduated from college I sold a bunch of my texts and luckily they were still useful to others, it's a quick few hundred bucks!
sparkysgirl 06-29-2006, 02:13 PM I'd keep trying to get the woman on the phone, once you talk to her she's pretty nice. And depending on the time of day you can get stuck in rush hour traffic coming from Longview (Tacoma and Seattle). I'd probably give yourself 3 hours, but that would be hanging pretty close to the speed limit. I have to say I think it's so funny everyone is talking about Longview Washington. I have family down there, but who knew so many people even knew it existed? :)

I'm all for Longview, but this I cannot handle! I'll always be a cards fan, even if they've been sucking lately. (but hey, pujols is back!!)
regarding hall health...funniest thing...so remember when I said she changed it to august 2? Well the email said, "tuesday, august 2" so I wrote back asking, is august 2 a tuesday? (NO!) and she writes back, "oh, sorry for the confusion, I've scheduled you for tuesday, august 2." Back to square 1!! but luckily I just forwarded to her the email I sent already, saying that I preferred the 7th, so now I've landed myself a 9am (eek!) appt for the 7th. But the good thing is that I'll only have to make 1 trip for the shots, the CPR, and if I'm lucky, squeeze in a class photo too!
by the way, I am surprised you all have family in Longview! Are any of them physicians? my dad would probably know them!

ahumdinger 06-30-2006, 02:09 PM ...now if we could only beat Oakland at least one time. Oh, and go Germany tomorrow!
victory deutschland!

who's excited?!?! A great kickoff to our school year!
EvolutionKills 07-04-2006, 04:36 PM Is the "family day" picnic thing at Pullman aimed at spouses and kids or do students bring their parents? I feel a little silly inviting my folks to see me off to professional school.
Oh, and is anybody here going to live in the Moscow WWAMI house?

I am bringing my wife and two kids to the afternoon picnic, but only my wife to the lunch in the middle of orientation. I am sure it is normal to invite parents along to orientation, though

EvolutionKills,
I am with you on the feeling weird about inviting my folks to see me off to professional school. I am sure that some people will invite their parents, but I'm not going to because I feel weird about it and my parents live a ways away from Moscow/Pullman.

I will be living in the co-ed WWAMI house in Moscow (I believe there is also another one strictly for women).
ahumdinger 07-05-2006, 02:29 PM hey, are we for sure doing the 4 weeks of just anatomy again this year? When I interviewed, a student told me that this past year was the 1st run, and it got mixed reviews, and it was still uncertain whether they will repeat it or go back to the old schedule. has it been decided?
sparkysgirl 07-05-2006, 02:46 PM I work with an M2, and from him it sounded like they were sticking with starting with pure anatomy (he said 5 weeks though). But, he is no official source by any means. Personally, I have mixed feelings about it. I understand the arguement that we will get more out of the other 1st quarter classes, and that after anatomy the rest of the fall won't seem that bad. But, a month to learn all the anatomy is pretty crazy. If anyone has any official news I'd love to hear it too.
