Okay.

So I didn't want to start another one of those annoying this-school-or-that-school threads, but I do need some opinions. Right now, my choice is UNC v. Emory. I'm 90% leaning toward UNC, but curious about the reputation of both. I know that your residency depends on how well you do in med school, but is either school known for producing more quality/successful residents on a national level?

Sorry for being annoying,
sweetdoc

UNC-or-BUST
03-25-2006, 09:03 PM
Probably Emory, but whats your fin aid look like, similar? are you in-state?
THe nice things about UNC is that besides a top25 reputation outside the US, NC hospitals look favorably on NC students, to keep them instate and from my understanding Duke is included, Durham and NC give them huge tax breaks, thus the politics likely favor a push to keep instaters instate.

sweetdoc
03-25-2006, 09:39 PM
Thanks for the input.

I'm instate here and I haven't complete my fin aid at Emory yet. It'll probably be heinous since parental info is required. I'll probably stay in NC for residency if I go to UNC so the tax break info is very cool. Thanks again :)

I did as well, mostly for the MBA ability. The school didn't impress me, i think nicer than UNC but the weather was a kicker. The students didn't seem as happy as I would like and I heard various comments plus or minus about admin.
They weren't giving me any cash either, 8K a year at UNC not bad....

Well good luck with Yale, UPenn first tier is pretty good they took several people last year. I took my choices down too, applied 25, interviews at almost all, but only kept UNC, CCLCM, and Duke. UNC is nice but CCLCM was amazing. I think I applied to the most diverse set of three top 25's. UNC cheap and great school, Duke expensive and top 5, and CCLCM small class size, 32, expensive but research heavy, five year program.

Overall, I can't loose, UNC would be sweet, sooo cheap I know the area, parents 30 minutes away, gf in nursing school there( UNC SHOULD HAVE REALLY SOLD THE NURSING SCHOOL, 300 young attractive females, lunch time is 1pm.... at the HEALTH AFFAIRS BOOKSTORE if you have a chance it truely is a sight to behold), very chill atmosphere,

I am on Duke's waitlist too....and trying to decide between Northwestern and UNC but leaning heavily towards UNC...

As for Emory Sweetdoc, I didn't get an interview for med school there but I visited the med campus and Atlanta with a friend and I would say that Atlanta is great if you want a bigger city feel with bigger city problems included but I HATED the no pass/fail curriculum (I have heard such bad things about letter grades and competitiveness in med school) so I wasn't upset when I didnt get an interview. And I know you have heard this before, but where did you feel you fit in better? Where will you be happier?

i didn't even apply to duke.. I was so high strung on if I stay in this area, I would come to UNC over Duke (one of the two main reasons is because I came here for undergrad., so  tar heel) .. but now in retrospect, alittle bit of me wished I had applied to Duke cause I kind of like the idea of finishing med school bascially in 3 years..tho, I dunno, with that lacross team thing, Duke I would say is looking pretty bad right now...

I cannot tell a lie. I actually have thought about this  'Carolina' blue is the color for me ;)

As far as the whole 'feel' thing goes, I liked my visit to Emory. The people there were almost more chill than the people at Yale. The campus/main hospital are gorgeous. The med school building was kind of dark, but they are building a new one. So I got a good feel for it.

Carolina was my first interview so I was in deer-in-headlights mode all day. My tour guides were nice. Dean Hoole was super nice and so was Mr. Keith. I guess I really didn't see much of the campus except for Berryhill and the applicant-cubby-hole. So I didn't get the best feel. At 2nd Look, I want to talk to more students and get a better feel for the campus (ie where's the gym and student center and do med students use both).

sweetdoc

PS - I'm looking into buying a townhouse/condo in Chapel Hill and looking to get a roommate to split the mortgage. How far is the commute from the Southpoint area to CH, phenyl?

sweetdoc:
I right now work in the hospital and have many many coworkers living out in that area. the commute from southpoint to campus is about 10-15minutes taking the back roads. if you don't have a parking permit on campus, there is a park and ride right on 54. it takes about 10-15 minutes from getting on the bus to arriving at berryhill. not too bad at all. I been living in Chapel hill/carrboro for 7 years now (college then work) ... so I am really looking forward to moving away. if u are looking into buying in chapel hill/carrboro 1) very expensive 2) you can't help not to notice how much of a college town this is.... durham is more affordable.. and lots of professionals live out near southpoint developments... and it is also easier to get around since it is right off 40.

I am living by the Southpoint area in Durham right now and I plan on staying in that area. It's close to a lot of places to eat and the mall is right there. AND it is less expensive than Chapel Hill/Carrboro. I looked at apartmentsand townhouses in Chapel Hill and Carrboro and for the money you got a lot less square footage than in Durham. And there are places right off of I-40 and Hwy 54 where it takes me less than ten minutes to the parking lot (to catch the bus to campus) in the morning and there are always a bunch of med students on the bus with me so I assume thats what most of the do. If you have questions about areas sweetdoc, pm me :)

I live in southern village, its pretty nice not too expensive. Two bedroom townhouse is $1150, nice yard, garage, swimming pool, tennis courts, and in the center is your own little town: coffee shop, resturants, food market, bank. Lots of kids... its alright, oh and movie theatre, small but during the summer they show movies on a big screen. About a minute from campus, N/S bus drop right off a the medical school. There is also a park/ride lot there so the really lazy people can drive the minute and then get on the bus

It depends on your situation....for me, I am going to rent at least for the first year. I don't know how much time outside of med school I will have and owning is a lot more maintenance work than renting. That being said, if you get a practically new place, the maintenance will be minimal and with renting I am just throwing money away. And then there are the financial questions....can you afford a downpayment? Extra appliances like a lawnmower? Will you be able to pay the mortage on your own or will that tie you to roommates? And from my perspective, renting in this area is so much less expensive than in other areas, I feel like it is worth renting another year to make sure I am not biting off more I can chew...it has been awhile since I have lived on financial aid and I want to be realistic about lifestyle expenses (i.e. beer money...j/k) You know my PM if you have any specific questions and I can give you my friend's email, I'm sure she would answer any buyer's questions...(I do know that she is somewhat regretting buying this soon because, for one reason, she needs roommates to help with the mortage and they are not as easy to come by as one would think)

Hope this helps!

I think if I can budget well, a moderately priced house or condo wouldn't be that big of a stretch for me. I've been living off of lateral-entry teacher pay for the past two years, which after taxes, is probably a little more than I'll get for living expenses next year. :)

Anyone see the USNWR rankings?
Research: UNC #20
Primary Care: UNC #2
average: UNC #11

Actually if average and use that to determine, total ranking UNC would probably be #7, a lot of the top research schools are pretty far back in the primary care, BALANCE!!!

Its also nice to see the construction starting to move away from the medical school area, new buildings and less noise...

What exactly does "business casual" mean?

From Wikipedia:

Business casual, also known as smart casual, is a popular dress code that emerged in workplaces in Western countries in the 1990s. Many information technology businesses in Silicon Valley were early adopters of this style of dress. In contrast to business formal wear (suits and neckties, sometimes called international standard business attire), business casual wear has no generally accepted definition; its interpretation differs widely between organizations and is often a cause of confusion.

The job search engine Monster.com offers this definition: "In general, business casual means dressing professionally, looking relaxed yet neat and pulled together." A more pragmatic definition is that business casual dress is a middle ground between business formal wear and street wear. Examples of apparel combinations that are considered appropriate for wearing to work by some organizations are:

For men, a collared shirt (perhaps a tennis shirt instead of a dress shirt) and cotton trousers (such as khakis)
For women, a tennis shirt and trousers

Neckties are generally not part of business casual dress unless worn in a very non-conservative way. The acceptability of jeans is variable — many organizations frown upon them, but will accept men who wear jeans with a sportcoat.

oh none taken! the only reason I said that is because I received a wierd email one moring telling me that my financial aid application is not complete ... so I called them and asked about it, along with the question of when I will get my financial aid package... Yeah, I got a similar email last Thursday. I was instructed to logon to myUNC and fill out some forms there. One was a VA Benefits Form (applies to my specific situation) and the other was an estimated 2006 income form (due to my change of employment status). I submitted both of the forms last week and my status on the myUNC page shows that I am now complete, although my award is still being processed. I thought I would call them after about a week, but I figured since I'm going to be there on Saturday, I'd just ask about it there. At least I know they've looked at my FAFSA and some of the other documentation I sent them (otherwise there's no way they would have known to send me those forms). I suppose that's positive movement. Hopefully, we'll all hear soon.

Ok, maybe this will settle a few nerves. I called the finaid number listed on the UNC site. I spoke with a representative there who told me, like others, that we wouldn't hear anything from her office (the med school finaid office) until late June. When I pressed her a little bit, asking how we were expected to make decisions about attending without this information, she admitted that her office was not actually handling the process. Instead, it was being handled by the main finaid office at UNC. This other office is also the one that sent me the email requesting the previously described documentation, so at least that makes sense. I pressed her a little more and she told me to maybe expect something in the next week or two from the main financial aid office. I tried calling over there (using the number provided in the email they sent me), but it was 4:09 and they had already left for the weekend. Ehh...with weather like this, who can blame them? So, in conclusion, I suspect that we will hear something much sooner than July, but as of yet, I can't confirm that. Hopefully, we will get a more definitive answer tomorrow.

See you soon,

Hi all,

Sorry I was a bum and could not force myself out of bed in time for Starbucks. I asked Mrs. Alston and she said that she would call Fin Aid on Monday and check. I want to say that she said that we should all hear something, like a general email, in a few weeks, but my memory is foggy. Was anybody else worn out by their tour guides? After the tour, I checked out some apartment complexes and by the time I made it home, I was bushed.

Hopefully see you all in August (hopefully we'll hear about fin aid before then),

What do you guys think about the political climate at UNC. Does anybody know if the students are liberal-leaning, or conservative? The reason I ask is that I'm really liberal, but went to a conservative undergrad so I'd like to be somewhere a little more liberal, and the monotony of the student body does kind of bother me (hence one of the reasons I'm still considering Brown). That being said, the second-look did confirm that as far as the school does, its exceptional.

Well, if your asking if they hate Bush, well yea most people at UNC hate Bush. While most people today hate Bush, UNC started hating him long before he gave America a reason to hate him. So UNC is pretty liberal but if their not liberal enough you can always put on your sandals and hike or bike to nearby anit-CARboro and spend sometime with the some hardcore aging hippie liberal dooshbags, eat some grass and smoke some grass what you liberals do...

FRAT_TASTIC haha, did you meet megdog. I don't think she had heard that term yet and had the same concern. UNCis definitely big on frats, try going out on the weekends and not catch yourself wondering if your on another plant with bug eyed girls and flipped up collar guys. Oh and in Kindergraden my teacher taught us which colors are for girls and which are for guys, I'd bet big money her son was gay, which is perfectly fine. Ahhh you have to love a frat guy in pink

roboyce
04-09-2006, 06:43 PM
I started out this process thinking I wanted to escape the fratish culture that seems so prevalent in the south, even at my tiny undergrad. Yet, after traveling all over the country, I came to the conclusion that no matter where you end up, you're going to have some sort of social mainstream pop-culture youth genre that you find annoying. In New England, you might find the "pea-coat and scarf" wearing crowd (trippy, I know you couldn't have missed this at Brown), in New York it's the "I paid a lot to look like I'm either (a) a vagrant or (b) an extra in Napolean Dynamite," in California it's the "I don't care what I'm wearing because California is the coolest place ever" look. So in the end, it all really seems the same, only the clothes change. I'm confident that I'll find a solid group of friends with whom I can relate and who will no doubt help carry me through this process no matter where I decide to put down roots.

Also, I'd like to point out that I probably looked a little fratish in my khakis and pastel green shirt (Seethrew, bobob, or WLG7 can attest to this), but honestly, what do you expect men to wear to something like this? If we had spoken, I doubt you would have put me into the frat category and I like to think that some of the people there may be in a similar situation. Can anyone refute this from conversation? I mean honestly, everyone there must have something going for them and I'm hopeful that I'll have the opportunity to learn from their diverse experiences.

As for a general lack of diversity, I'd say that's probably true if you were to classify diversity using only terms of geography and ethnicity. On the other hand, I was impressed with the fact that UNC really has a unique group of people with really varied career aspirations. Seriously, at some of the other schools, it seems like everyone is on this high intensity, research oriented path to academic medicine. You could almost feel the pressure on the room to see who was going to be the first to receive tenure. I didn't feel that at UNC. Sure, some people are interested in pursuing such a career, but there also seemed to be quite a few people interested in other areas, even some who, god forbid, were interested in primary care and private practice.

Finally, on the politics, I'd say that I have a unique perspective. Why, you might ask? Well, given certain aspects of my experiences, politics almost always makes itself to the forefront of any conversation in which I engage. Despite my own beliefs, I am often stereotyped as conservative. I found this to be especially true at schools with strong traditions of liberal activities, much to my disappointment. In many of my interviews, I was having to openly state my politics in order to defend against general mischaracterization of my personality. I'm somewhat suspicious that it may have affected the outcome of my application (Of course, I'm not so arrogant to think it's the only thing, as I realize there are plenty of holes in my application.). So where is all of this going? Well, to be honest, I learned that even people with whom I like to think I share common ground on issues as varied as human rights and foriegn policy can be just as closed minded as those with whom I politically disagree. Quite frankly, I'd just be happy to be at a place where all views are equally respected and opinions are vetted in an honest and forthright manner. I think you may find more of that here than in other locations...just my (slightly biased) opinion. Of course, I certainly understand the desire of you folks that just want to get out of the state for awhile. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm lucky in that I've been away for awhile and the idea of coming back isn't quite so painful.

Sorry, I didn't meet everyone on this thread. Seethrew definitely called me out, but I would assert it's a pretty easy call given the fact that my last name is sewed onto my Army issue backpack that I had...hmmm. I had a Meghan at my lunch table, but I didn't confirm if it was really megdog. As for Sweet, Bust, Trippy, and Phenyl, I guess you guys will remain a mystery for now...or perhaps you recognized me and just ran scared. I wouldn't blame you. That pastel green can certainly be intimidating.

About the apartment complexes.

I went to Carrboro to look at some complexes out there: Autumn Woods, Sterling Brook, and Poplar Place. I was definitely surprised to see how expensive everything was - $650-750 for a one bedroom. I definitely liked Autumn Woods the best so far. It's the newest complex in Carrboro, the property is nice + woodsy, the gym is being updated as I type, and the CX stops right in front of the place.

I'm still looking into buying but there doesn't seem to be that much on the market. I think I might just rent b/c the idea of living by myself seems sweeter day by day. I'll be going back to CH next weekend to look at Timber Creek, Rock Creek, and maybe a few other places.

Does anybody have any helpful info when it comes to finding a reasonable, safe, close apartment in the area?

golf: I just want to say I totally understand your frustration and wanting to leave for a while, I am really sort of in the same position. i think the most important thing is really go to a place where you think you will be the happiest for the next four years, even if this requires a change of scenary. UNC is great and definitely has tremendous opportunities, but I truly believe you will be able to find what you want do be part of in any top rated med schools, including brown and pitt. Don't get me wrong, I love UNC (so much I couldn't even bring myself to apply to dook haha). But, don't let money be the only reason that keeps you here. I work in a hospital, and every physician I talked to tells me that, in the end, the difference in price is not at all significant. I don't know much about Brown, but we do have a resident who just came from brown in our department. He loves loves brown, though he did mention that Brown Med is the more conservative Ivy, not politically, but Brown does tend to have a stronger focus on primary care than the others. Anyways, he said that basically all brownies match into northeastern ivies for residency without any problem (he was however tired of the cold). He really enjoyed the small class size and the "perks" that come with it and with an Ivy education. Anyways, I have said too much. If you want to know more about brown or have any questions, feel free to msg me and I can ask them for you, or arrange you to talk to him in person.

autumn woods is a quick busride in. its a lot cheaper if you share with some people. i know 3 people who share and pay very little there. a lot of people rented at first and kept there eyes peeled for a good buy. its a LOT cheaper to buy on the outskirts near durham. real estate is high commodity in the hill. more houses will come on the market too - they go fast though. a house on my block went into contract after 2 weeks. under 800 sq feet for 200K. *shakes head*

if you want to live closer to classes and walk, you can pay the same amount 650-700 for a single. i know for a fact that there are at least 2 available now. 1 on mccauley - look at louise beck real estate web site.

another good resource if you want to look for a housemate is the graduate school website at unc. it has a bulletin board for people seeking places/people. thats how i found my housemate and we get along great. its nice to live with someone who isnt in your program, so you can escape med school sometimes.

the only area that i know of that is a little shady is that area just beyond rosemary behind where those new condos are by the "fuse" bar.

Yeah did you like that? Did you notice the creases in it from where I just took it out of the wrapper the day before and didn't iron it? Hope you enjoyed it, it won't come out that much. I'll be the guy in class who's always wearing shorts and a T-shirt in summer and warm-up pants and a hooded sweatshirt in winter, assuming I have nothing else going on that day. Sadly for everyone else who has to share a room with me, comfort typically trumps fashion. Anyway, I heard patients dig the casual look.

I thought the style statement you UNC students made by wearing huge UNC T-shirts over whatever you wore that day was fabulous, by the way. Ironic that roboyce just made that huge treatise on geography and style. Speaking of roboyce, I'm pretty sure he popped his collar and threw on his aviator sunglasses as soon as he was out of view from everybody else.

I thought the style statement you UNC students made by wearing huge UNC T-shirts over whatever you wore that day was fabulous, by the way. Ironic that roboyce just made that huge treatise on geography and style.
it was all the admissions offices design. they wanted us to appear as if we were living large. extra extra large.

I leave this thread alone for one night and look what happens... intellectual conversation!!! :thumbdown

Intellectual is a relative term...

In other news, 2nd look weekends are awkward for me. Typically when I meet someone for the first time, I feel like I'm cheating someone (and myself) if I only talk to them long enough to get name/school/graduation year. I'd much rather have a slightly longer, more informative discussion. However, this is difficult with 100+ unknown people around. So then it becomes, do I talk to many people for a short amount of time each or a few people for a longer amount of time? It's pretty much lose-lose because one way I see a lot of people's faces but very little about them (like remembering their names), the other way I leave large numbers of people unmet, which is why I know I didn't get to talk to many of the people in here. Faced with this dilemma, I typically try to do neither in favor of shutting down and hiding in a corner. Thankfully, I've trained myself to be social for the most part.

Anyway, the point of that rambling was to say that A) I have issues, and B) I apologize if I didn't get to meet all of you, but assuming I choose UNC, I hope to get to know you all better at orientation/once class starts.

golf: I just want to say I totally understand your frustration and wanting to leave for a while, I am really sort of in the same position. i think the most important thing is really go to a place where you think you will be the happiest for the next four years, even if this requires a change of scenary.

Thanks phenyl...good luck with your decision too

Ok, back to finaid:

I just spoke with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. The kind woman there told me that they are in the last stages of processing awards for graduate students (us). She said that we should expect to receive an email from their office within the next week or two. The email will let us know that our application is complete and the award information is available on myUNC. That sounds a little more reasonable to me. I have no idea what the med school finaid office is talking about...maybe disbersement of funds or signing promissary notes?

Trippy: So that was you, huh? Are you headed to Brown second look later this month? I don't think I can afford the travel. I spent some extra time up there when I interviewed so I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what they offer.

As for housing, I'm looking to buy, most likely something in the 2BR/2BA range. I've found quite a few in the Finley Forest area to the east of campus. That puts you within a few miles of campus, which is certainly within the distance I'm willing to ride my bike. Although, I need to check the safety of the route. One poor guy in my tour group got hit by a car a couple weeks ago. That's encouraging. I think next weekend I'm going to explore a little more, especially the area to the south of campus, which seems pretty residential.

That was me at your table. I recognized your name, but I never got a chance at lunch to say something. Plus, I felt a little shy about making the SDN connection :o . At any rate, it's nice to meet you now :) .

I agree with alot of what you said in your post...I was worried about the "fratasticness" (this was a new term I learned on Saturday) of UNC coming into the second look, but I actually didn't get that vibe from the med students I met. Plus, like you said, in a class of 160, I think there's a niche for everyone. I'm kindof comforted by the fact that there's a group of us who are a little preoccupied about the prep culture - that supports the niche theory right there.

Nice. I can't believe how many of you I met (knowingly or not). That's crazy. I'm not sure why everyone is so shy about coming out from behind the veil of SDN, but I suppose it's that fear of a miss...and then looking foolish. After all, the "I met you on the internet" line really goes over well.

Well, best of luck to everyone in the finaid and housing process. Let us know what you hear.

sooo, just a little update on the financial aid process. I called (again! haha) this morning and was told that we won't be getting anything until late may, which is a big improvement from the early July answer I got last time. Being irritated and all since late may is still too late, I asked her if she can check if I have gotten any merrit-based scholarship (both of my interviewers told me that they were going to recommend me for one). She went to check and came back and told me that my financial aid hasn't been packaged yet (in another word, they haven't even start processing my finan. aid, even tho I turned in early Feb), thus she won't be able to tell me anything.... ughhhhh

Not sure what number you called, but this is the one I called:

Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid - (919)962-8396

The person on the phone called up my SSN, took a look at my paperwork and told me I should hear in the next two weeks. Of course, this was only after I pressed her. At first, she tried to tell me that the main office doesn't handle medical students. Then I explained that we have to make decisions soon and no one had any information. She relented and told me that they were just finishing up grad/professional students...or she lied to me. Who knows. I got the answer I wanted to keep me happy for at least the next two weeks. If May rolls around and I haven't heard anything, I will be back on the phone. It is my understanding that the main office handles EVERYTHING and then it gets pushed down to the med school office...just my impression.

Here's part of the email I received that makes me think this is true:

The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid has received your Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and/or the CSS PROFILE.
Before we can determine your eligibility for financial aid or revise an
existing financial aid award, we must have additional information that
verifies earlier reported or missing data. Failure to provide this
information will delay processing and ultimately affect your eligibility
for aid.

I doubt this really helps to ease your mind...sorry.

I went down to the office in person and brought work with me, waiting expected!!! They told me this week or next...? Originally I went to the wrong office... apparently the fin aid offices actual have nothing to do with each other, speak separate languages, and only live under the same UNC flag b/c the grad school office failed in two civil wars to gain independence... (I guess while grad students are bigger and stronger than undergrads the numbers just don't work out...)
Still everyone in the office looked real busy... but I spent a summer as at Prestonwood Country Club as the pool maintaince guy, basically paid eye candy, and everyone said I always looked so busy, I'll I did to look busy was walk around every once in awhile with a screw driver... did about 3 hours of true work the whole summer!!!

BECAUSE IT HAS TO BE SAID:

Q: How many Bush Administration officials does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: None. There is nothing wrong with the light bulb; its conditions are improving every day. Any reports of its lack of incandescence are a delusional spin from the liberal media. That light bulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the lighting effect. Why do you hate freedom?

OR slight less funny:

How many members of the Bush administration does it take to change a light bulb?

1. One to deny that a light bulb needs to be changed;

2. One to attack the patriotism of anyone who says the light bulb needs to be changed;

3. One to blame Clinton for burning out the light bulb;

4. One to arrange the invasion of a country rumored to have a secret stockpile of light bulbs;

5. One to give a billion dollar no-bid contract to Halliburton for the new light bulb;

6. One to arrange a photograph of Bush, dressed as a janitor, standing on a step ladder under the banner: Light Bulb Change Accomplished;

7. One administration insider to resign and write a book documenting in detail how Bush was literally in the dark;

8. One to viciously smear #7;

9. One surrogate to campaign on TV and at rallies on how George Bush has had a strong light-bulb-changing policy all along;

10. And finally one to confuse Americans about the difference between screwing a light bulb and screwing the country.

The room is 12x11 and has its own bathroom and pretty large closet. The apartment complex is gated and has a pool, gym, tanning beds etc. If you want to look at it online the website is www.southterrace.com

It is about 10 minutes from the free park and ride and it is like a minute away from Southpoint mall and grocery stores and restaurants. PM if you are interested or if you know anyone who would be :)

There is also a park/ride lot there so the really lazy people can drive the minute and then get on the bus

hey, i am new to sdn but i noticed you mentioned southern village. I am considering living there but would love to hear any advice you might have. are there any pros and/or cons you can think of?

hey robhan! welcome to UNC. I am not exactly sure on this residency thing... my residency here was hard earned (nothing through undergrad). but on the interview day, Mr. Keith told couple of the oos that he doesn't know any oos who didn't get residency before they graduate. for more info, I would just call them and ask.

I asked this questions, and apparently in order to establish residency for tuition purposes, you have to file your taxes, register to vote, and register your car in the state of North Carolina. Basically, as long as you make an effort, you will only pay out of state tuition your first year.

Pretty good deal!!

Anything on scholarships?

I think quite a few of the institutional, merit based ones have already gone out. I think there's two or three on mdapplicants alone. Whether or not those people have accepted the awards is yet to be determined. In other words, you could always be on a "waitlist" for an award and not know it. Maybe one of those winners will decide to go to another school. That's what happened to me with an outside scholarship that UNC nominated me for. Obviously no one knows anything about need-based awards as we're all still awaiting news from the finaid office. For those that are still deciding between schools, I know that some schools will let you hold multiple acceptances if you haven't heard back from finaid by the May 15th deadline. Just check with the other schools you are considering. Let's hope we hear something before then.

i dont know if someone has answered this but they are probably asking about your community week preceptor. you spend 5 weeks over 2 years with them. there is no way you can tell what you are going to get in terms of mentorship - it varies so much. just choose a specialty and area you want to see. I handed mine in late and got burlington, which was not on my radar. but has the benefit of being able to stay at home in chapel hill. if you end up having serious issues with your mentor you can change.

in terms of specialty - if you dont like kids dont pick peds, pick IM. if you want to maybe see a lot of vag... ob. a lot of hyperlipidemia and hypertension - IM. I have IM and it is a busy office with quick visits. the plus is that it is attached to the hospital so i got to go visit some inpatients and practice physical exams on them. i think the coolest possibility is ANY specialty that lets you get your hands dirty and make mistakes, but you cant select for that unfortunately. if you are motivated i am sure you can find cool things about any specialty. Its really a 5 week, not 2 year commitment, I would stress too much about it.

sorrry this advice comes a little late... but waitlisters might like to see.

Anything due soon. I'm still waiting for the packet.... :(

The parking lottery closes on the 11th I believe. I'm doubtful any first years get spots, but I threw my name into the pool. Registration is on the public safety website, which I accessed through the orientation site. Stranger things have happened...

Can someone show me where it says immunizations are due by May 15th? Everything from the packet says prior to Orientation.

Ross--

It IS due on the 15th...but they won't kick you out of school unless its not done 30 days after the semester starts. Go to the main unc page and log into applicant central (I just did a search for applicant central)...you have to fill out a generic physical form with immunizations...I won't be turning mine in for at least 2 weeks because i just started getting my TB skin test going today...i dont think its a big deal.

I called the office of student affairs and they said the state of NC immunizations (three DTP or Td, one Td within the last 10 years, and 2 MMR) and the form on applicant central are due by May 15. The supplemental school of medicine shots (a two-step PPD, two varicella shots or a varicella titer, Hep B vaccines, and a Hep B titer) are supposed to be done by July 15...so there's still time to make the May 15 deadline since you probably have all of those except maybe the Td booster. I gotta say, I'm not really a fan of all these shots - I thought I signed up to be on the other side of the needle  .

Thanks for the info everyone. I know that here in Forsyth County, you can get a PPD screen at the Department of Public Health for $10 if you're in a hurry or can't get a timely appointement with your doc. I'm probably going to be late with these forms. We'll see.

Also, I started seriously looking at the school sponsored health insurance. I think I am going to go out on my own on this one. In general, most of us are single, young, and healthy. Additionally, we get the majority of our primary care needs covered by the Student Health Center (since we pay the mandatory student health fee), with the exception of prescription drugs and emergency/hospital care. If you're willing to raise the deductible (ie pay more upfront, out of pocket expenses) you will find there are a other plans offered by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of NC (same provider UNC uses) that are less expensive. I can't say this is the best option for everyone. As with all insurance, it varies with your levels of acceptable risk. Personally, I think I can reduce the cost of my health insurance by more than $2500 over the course of four years by choosing an alternate plan.

Does anyone else find the mandatory $160 Disability Insurance slightly annoying? I mean normally people get disability insurance so they have a means to replace lost income should they be unable to return to work. We're students. What income are we going to lose? On the UNC website it says:

Disability Insurance: The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), which sets accreditation standards for medical schools, requires that our school make disability insurance available to all students. A local company has collaborated with our medical school administration and student leaders to offer us an attractive disability plan. However, in order to implement this, the company requires all enrolled students to be covered.

So basically, this company made a deal with UNC in that they would offer disability insurance so long as UNC made every student purchase it. I call shananigans on that one.

Good call on the shananigans. I know Universities are a business but most students are already taking out loans and living on a tight budget...they could at least be more upfront with all this stuff (ie include it in tuition, so we can easily tell we're paying $18k a year or whatever instead of $10k).

This was what I understood, too. I'm wondering if I can get a PPD test through my workplace. The only other thing I'd need is the varicella titer, which is bizarre because a Hx of chicken pox has been enough everywhere else. Guess I have a little bit of time, though.

Also, did I understand it correctly when they said we need to send a copy of all this stuff to the student health center AND the medical school? What, can't they communicate with each other?

I have a question for you. I also have been accepted UNC med school. But here is the problem. Do they require ALL students to have a bachelor's degree? I mean when I filled out my Amcas application I did tell them that I will graduate in 12/2006. So do you guys think that it will matter if I dont graduate.

FYI: They do say "Barring extraordinary circumstances a Bachelor's degree is required for admission"

Thanks.

Ironically, the doctor I work for now never graduated from college, either. Similar circumstances, I guess, where she was working on her degree but got into medical school with the requisite classes/grades and then just didn't finish.

However, seeing as how that was 30-40 years ago, I imagine things are slightly different and you'd want to double check. Record-keeping is a bit more accurate these days with all those new-fangled electronic gizmos, like computers.

i think like 30 people in the first year get spots in the s11 lot.
they are uber serious about getting immunizations done before orientation.
there was all this chaos during the year, some people got "kicked out" maybe it was during the first block - because of not have immunizations in order. i mean they got back in the next day once they git the shots, but what a pain in the ass. save yourself some hassle and get it done before orientation.

I would think they were careful enough when they went through your application to notice that you would not have a bachelors degree by this fall. IMO, I would say the worse case scenario would be deferring until next fall when you will have your degree.

I received a parking spot in the CD lot as well, but I don't think I'm going to pay for it. I want to try to minimize my driving while in school. I'm going to be living close enough to campus to bike to class (up the hill), but even if that doesn't work out, I can walk to a bus stop that goes directly to the hospital. We'll see if I regret this decision in a couple months...

With any luck, I should be moving over to Chapel Hill in the next few weeks. I'm shooting for mid-June. I've got some work to do on my new place, but I'll be around if anyone else is going to be in the area. Let me know.

I was somewhat surprised (but I guess not really) that they watered it down as much as they did from the book. The acting did kind of suck, but what can you do.

Anyways, so I was thinking I would respond to UNC's throwdown email about immunizations in kind, by letting them know that I'll send their stuff in whenever they send me my financial aid package. I hear medical schools respond well to that kind of strong-arming negotiation.

Apparently at UNC the burden of timeliness is only on the applicants' side of things. I swear, if it weren't so cheap and such a good school.... They could really take some lessons from some of these other schools.

hi, i'm new/learning my way around this site...

i'm about to sign a lease at autumn woods...any other first years (or other med students) living there?

FYI, I'm about to find out in the next day or two just how strict that immunization policy is, because I'm going to come up short on the varicella vaccine and the PPD test and I'm going to have to call and beg for leniency.

They will probably be happy to know that the reason I won't be combatting my diseases in time is that I'll be busy acquiring other, more interesting exotic illnesses from overseas. But don't worry. I'll share.

Also, is there some sort of corollary to the "5 minute rule" here, except for the fin aid instead of class? Like, if they don't offer the package within a month of school starting we get tuition free?

But seriously. If they don't get the info to us in time to get loans, how do they exactly expect to get paid?

I got my finaid last Friday. I drove the eighty miles over to Chapel Hill and held a sit-in until I got the answers I wanted. Even then, the initial award was was incorrect. Luckily, I was able to correct the problem on the spot, rather than having to try to get their attention again via the phone. You might think about doing the same before you leave the country. They were quite surprised to learn that I hadn't heard anything yet, which is odd because I had called them about twenty times in the last two weeks. They kept asking "have you checked your myUNC?" Ugh...yes.

so, i don't know if this will be helpful to anyone...maybe i'm just a slow learner...

as of today, by fumbling about online, i found that i already had an 'onyen', which is apparently what you need for financial aid. not sure whether i had this because i originally applied to unc as an undergrad (but never went) or what. at any rate, there is a page under the 'myunc' site that allows you to put in your pin and ssn and DOB and make your password for your onyen. THAT will get you to your financial aid AND apparently to an email account which i didn't know i had. this is kind of contrary to the notice that they sent, which said if you don't already have an onyen, they would send you one by email or regular mail once your package was complete.

all this being said, i called the fin aid office last week and was told that my letter wasn't ready yet...but the online version i accessed today says my package was ready on the 24th of may??

am very confused.

well, if you end up at drexel, would you mind asking them to get a move on cashing my secondary check that they've had for SEVEN MONTHS?

Echooooo echoooo echoooo.....

Anyway, so the camping trip is Aug 4-6, which, conveniently, is also NC's Tax-Free weekend to order our laptops/textbooks, etc. So the question is, will I have $153+ worth of fun on this camping trip to make it worthwhile?

My girlfriend's white coat ceremony is also the 4th, but I think we all know where that lies on the priority list... Although I guess theoreticaly if we wouldn't leave til the afternoon on the 4th.

Ah screw it, I'm going to Ecuador.

Why do I feel so out of the loop with UNC? So do they pre-order our overpriced laptops and we get them Orientation Week or can we actually go get them on a tax-free day? And what is the time period of orientation - August 7-11 and classes start the 14th?

Okay nevermind on most of that except for the overpriced laptops - I read that we get our laptops during orientation, but that is after the tax-free weekend. Anyone know if we can actually take advantage of the tax holiday or is this another situation where we just have to suck it up and pay the extra money?

Hey everybody, I just got off the WL last week, and I'm definitely coming back for four more at UNC.

You can take advantage of the tax holiday by ordering it in person at Student Stores or the Ram Shop or over the phone (919-962-8534) during the tax-free weekend. I'm hopefully going to take care of it on Friday before headin to the backwoods. As for the books, if medical school is anything like undergrad, you can probably get them online or from a 2nd year for a lot less than you'd pay at UNC's bookstore anyway.

I would have replied to this thread but I've either been too drunk or too hungover. Anyway, I'd definately be down if I was in Chapel Hill...but I'm moving up on the 1st, we should all get together before school starts.

Ditto here. The bars are a great way to get to know each other, and lightweights like me won't tear up your newly bought home after multiple keg stands . Going to all of Chapel Hill's best bars in one night is like trying to see the best of Europe in one week, but we'll make the most of it.

Looks to me like our medical school computers are pre-ordered for us...I guess I need to call and try to find someone that can give me an answer.

The laptop is pre-ordered for us, but I think it just has to be paid in full during the Sales Tax Holiday (deferred payament plans are ineligible). I guess that could be a problem if you were depending on financial aid to pay for it.

PS- I'm getting this information from a packet I got from UNC last Thursday.

hey, guys and girls of 2010!

I am a nameless second year. Just wanted to give you some tips on the upcoming first year.

1. Private matters should be discussed through private means - if not at all.
2. Don't be intimidated by the workload. It's a lot of stuff, but it's also stuff you're going to learn over and over. I do not regret missing an evening of study.
3. Be involved in people's lives. Be involved in your family, friends, and SO. This is something that I do regret.
4. Makes lots of friends, but understand you can't be friends with everyone in your class. There are going to be many people who share the same interest as you.
5. Travel.
6. Remember to look away from books and computer screen and breathe.
7. Enjoy your experience. I have really come to appreciate the opportunity medicine has opened up for me. If you observe closely, you will see that medical school is everything you dreamt of and more. It's going to be awesome. Money back guaranteed for those of you getting full ride!

Congrats and good luck! I will see you all when school starts.

I'm going, for the bonding. The trip sounds fun, and I think it'll be a good opportunity to meet people, but I don't think it'll be your last chance - it seems like they have stuff set up during orientation for us to get to know each other. If you do decide to camp, you'll still have the week of orientation and the following weekend to settle in. Sooo, I don't know if that helps you with your decision, but maybe at least gives you some more things to think about. Hope to see you camping.

Isn't it mid-August? I think that's when they disburse the loans. Not exactly sure, since I don't have the paperwork in front of me.

Congratulations!

Most of us have graduated from the program and have left Chapel Hill last year. Some of us have houses and some of us rent. :)

I think you're looking for the class of 2014 thread ;)

Good luck!
