Hi
Does anyone have anything to say about the Kaiser IM programs in California.

Thanks

if anyone has any opinions - also, if anyone is aware whether the rumor is true that many of the faculty from Stanford and UCSF rotate through the northern CA KP sites.

Thanks.

I did a medicine sub-I at Kaiser in Santa Clara last year. I thought it was a decent place overall, but a couple of things really bothered me. First, there was hardly any bedside rounding at all with the attending. Our team gathered every morning in a room and we discussed selected patients with the attending, and then it was off to finish our work. Once in a while, the attending would bring everyone to a bedside to show something interesting, but that was about it. I had 3 different attendings, and they all did the same thing. They were all hospitalists, btw.
I also felt quite discontent with my eval there by the medicine program director. He based his eval on his meetings with me, which were about an hour a week, when we went over cases. I really think my eval should've been filled out by someone I worked with, and not someone I met with for an hour a week, who asked some questions, some of which I got right and some wrong. He did get input from the senior resident, but her comments centered around my inability to get things done as quickly as her or the other students. That really ticked me off because she'd been there for 3 freakin years, and other students had been there for at least several months. Often, I was simply expected to get things done, with hardly any instructions on how to work the computer system, or what their consult process was etc. All 3 of my attendings gave me great reviews, by the way. The PD mentioned that in passing during the eval, but left it at that.
The didactics were mediocre at best, and so were the morning reports with case presentation etc. I base this on personal experience at various other hospitals. As for faculty from Stanford or UCSF, I have no idea. I don't remember anyone from outside coming to lecture while I was there.
I don't know what other info you guys are looking for. If you have specific questions, I'll be happy to answer.
BTW, I applied to the program and never heard a word from them. Not even a rejection, which I think is the height of unprofessionalism.
