I'm curious to know if anyone lived at least 30 minutes from their dental school while attending. My fiance and I are looking at a place and my driving distance would be about 33 minutes. Is this do-able?

I hope so. My drive next year is 45 min.

I was talking with a recent dental grad and he said you should live as close as possible (if not on campus) for your first year. But keep in mind that he was from a school that had mandatory attendance.

He told me that all of my free time would be dedicated to studying and that I would have no social life anyway. Why spend an hour a day commuting (30 minutes to and from) plus traffic worries. School is 8 to 5 and that leaves very little time to spend driving my car.........he made some pretty good points.

Just wanted to chime in here..…The first year of dental school is tough and I suggest living real close to school (within 15 min). After you learn the ropes and become more comfortable with your requirements, then living farther away isn’t a big deal. I live 1hr and 10min from school. I literally spend three hours a day commuting (depending on traffic). I do not recommend this for most people. However, if you commute to help your fiancé out, own a home, or perhaps have a family then making the sacrifice will be worth it. I know several classmates that live 45 min+ away from school and all are doing well.

Beta, are you going to Indiana, just out of curiosity?

I've been going to the dental school over almost three years now, and my daily commute is about 45 mins in the morning and 20 mins in the evening ( I leave here around 7pm, after the rush hour). I own a house. Now having said all of that, would I live in a nice place or would I bitch about getting real close to school and being there all the time? That is your choice. I'd just get a place you are comfortable with (location, and price wise) and then just take it from there.

I speak from experience, but I would like a place a bit away from school. Trust me, after 6 months of school you will be sick of that place/area of town. Get a nice and peaceful place to live.

i know some people in my class that live around 30 minutes drive from school, but i think the convenience of living close is priceless. especially first year, you are not going to want to be losing a couple valuable hours of sleep/study time so you can drive in. it's also nice being able to go home for lunch sometimes and be able to just pop over to the school anytime you need to practice in the lab, go to the library, whatever. I live about a 15 minute walk from the school and it's nice because i am close enough to be convenient, but just far enough off the main campus not to have to deal much with the traffic, undergrad crowds, etc.

If parking isn't a problem at school, a 30 min commute shouldn't be too much of a problem. There are a lot of people at UOP who rather live outside of the city because they have families and they have no problem with a 30+ min commute.
