View Full Version : Shipping a car 3,000 miles!
helpme! 03-31-2006, 10:56 AM Hi all!
I'll be starting pharm school this coming fall and need to figure out a way to get my car transported from the west coast to the east. Does anyone have any suggestions? I heard that it can be pretty expensive...know of any companies that ship? Should I drive all the way across country? With gas prices these days...and the mileage....AHHHH!! Moving is so much fun, isn't it?? :D :o :D :o ;)
Tyrius 03-31-2006, 11:04 AM What i did when i relocated with my fmaily is rent out a uhaul and then get the vehicle trailer added on. That way you can haul and your stuff adn your vehicle at the same time. Not sure you'll have that much stuff to haul tho. =/
KUMoose 03-31-2006, 11:21 AM I would either get a tow dolly with a truck to move your stuff or drive out there. While the gas will cost a chunk, it's still cheaper then the automobile relo services I've seen.
If you have friends going east you could try to carpool at least part of the way, to share the cost.
Alternately, sell the car and (maybe) buy one at the new location.
helpme! 03-31-2006, 12:04 PM Hi all!
I thought I would post this thread for current pharmacy students as well as pre-pharmacy students. You all probably have a better idea since some of you might have gone through this already. Thanks!!

this is a very good thread!!! I was going to ask this one myself..I live in Chicago, thinking to take my car with me to Florida (knows good news from NOVA yesterday :) )., but I don't know if that's a good idea or not..
more inputs on this topic will be great!!! anyone takes their cars with them?? pros and cons????
DownonthePharm 03-31-2006, 02:24 PM If your on a north/south or east/west route you can get a car shipped with a little difficulty. Be prepared to pay $700-$1000 though. If your going to a pretty big city, some companies have individuals who will drive your car but they are allowed more time. I would also recommend U-hauling it if at all possible.
1. Drive
2. Drive
3. Trailer it behind a penske
3000mi is a 3 day trip if you have 2 drivers and 5 days if you are alone. The company gives you a week or more if you rent the penske it for such a long trip. Also, if you drive you don't incur expenses for hauling yourself and your stuff accross the country (1 way tickets tend to be expensive).
Did I mention that it is fun to travel accross the continent ?
snailman 03-31-2006, 02:44 PM i was planning to drive from the east coast to the west coast. maybe we can just swap cars?
yupyup 03-31-2006, 04:10 PM what is wrong with you people, drive! what better excuse to see some of the country? I've driven across the country several times just for fun, so sack up and strap in...
tomrocks 03-31-2006, 04:12 PM my friend just had hers shipped from sf to dc for 500. im not sure what company.

Drive the 3,000 miles. You need to bring lots of stuff with you and it won't all fit in your airplane luggage limit. Driving is fun. Where are you driving from and to?

I shipped my car from Southern California to Massachusetts last summer. I used CarMoves at (800)846-8781 and it was $965. This price was for door-to-door service; it would have been cheaper if we had dropped it off and picked it up at a regional depot. It took some time--they picked up the car August 12, and we didn't see her again until a few days after Labor Day. They were very good about tracking the car, though--I called every few days and they would tell me exactly where she was, if she had just been transferred to a different truck, etc. I will definitely use them again when I head back west.
rivatnt 03-31-2006, 04:39 PM I heard it is about $1000 coast to coast. The good thing is that you can fill up your car with stuff.

They actually made a big deal out of not packing the car with stuff so that it will be at it's manufacturer's weight, but we crammed the trunk full and no one seemed to care.
twester 03-31-2006, 05:03 PM Road trip! It'd be torturous in two or three days - so take a week or month. Stop at Stuckey's for pecan logs (do they still exist?). See Yellowstone, go to Mt. Rushmore. Stop in Chicago for a night or two. Get a temp job at a diner in Kalispell or Enid. Don't know where those are? Find out. Pack CDs and a couple of friends and it could be fun.
If the car is worth shipping, it must be in cross-continental driving condition.
The only reason not to drive a car for the mileage would be if you have a screwy low-mileage lease. Still leaves you the option of trailering.

calrx 03-31-2006, 06:22 PM my friend just had hers shipped from sf to dc for 500. im not sure what company.
Wow, that's not bad at all! Do you think you could find out what company she used? I'm going to need to ship my baby (my Honda Element!) from NY to Ft. Lauderdale. I'm anticipating spending around $500. My boss told me that they guarantee the shipping 100%. If there are any dings/scratches/problems they take full responsibility. It seems like a safe thing to do. Anybody have any serious problems or know of someone who did? I'm slightly skeptical but I can't imagine driving it down there. Plus I really don't want to put that many miles on it so soon.
cdpiano27 03-31-2006, 09:54 PM Drive the 3000 miles. I go to grad school at NC State and my parents
are in West Palm Beach. I drive every christmas break and summer break round trip and it is 750 miles each way.
In fact, I am getting a masters degree and plan to drive back and forth all the way to D.C. 1750 miles total 750 to West Palm Beach and 1000 back up to D.C.
It is great to see the whole country.
crying moo 03-31-2006, 09:54 PM I don't have much to add onto this but another estimate: my parents shipped a car from DC to LA and it cost $800
I think it depends on what kind of car you have. Something that gets 10-15 mpg---might as well ship it.

helpme! 04-01-2006, 01:53 AM How exactly does a penske work? Do you have to rent the actual U-Haul truck to attach it? Or can you attach it to the back of your own car? I tried looking stuff up on the UHAUL website but currently, "The U-Haul Rates & Reservations system is currently down for maintenance." Thanks for the idea!

helpme! 04-01-2006, 02:07 AM I'd love to drive if I could, but I currently work full time and am not eligible for days off for another 6 months! I'd be moving from LA to DC.

boobash 04-01-2006, 02:24 AM welp, when I graduated from Ohio State a few years back, I drove my car from Columbus, OH to Orange County, CA. And now I got accepted to Atlanta, GA, so I'll be driving it back east. The driving was not too bad, as long so you can get yourself good copilots/navigators.

My husband made it from Tampa to San Francisco in 3 days, but that was crazy. Are you going to be working for the same company in DC? You won't be able to work full time and still go to pharmacy school. Just ask for the time off to move. I bet they'll give you the time off.
My dad has had is car shipped to and from Boston, MA and Orlando, FL by train. Only cost him $150 each way. I'm not sure which company does the train thing but it may be worth looking into.
DrugDealer 04-01-2006, 09:17 AM my parents shipped a car from DC to LA and it cost $800
Mu understanding was that shipping east to west is more expensive than shipping west to east. More people head west than vice versa, so the movers need to get trucks to the east to meet the demand, and they might as well entice people to fill 'em up at a lower price. Maybe that's not really true....
How exactly does a penske work?
You rent the 16ft cube as a one-way, you rent the platform type 'car-carrier', you load your c$)( into the cube, drive the car on the trailer and pull it to the other end of the country. (if you haven't driven trailers before it takes some getting used to, you will learn to gauge the width of toll-plazas and the length of hotel parking lots pretty quick)
Caverject 04-01-2006, 07:29 PM That was real mature...who needs to do the growing up?
I guess i'm just shocked that a 27 year old needs help from an online forum comprised mainly of 18-24 year olds to tell you if you should drive or not. I would like to believe that that is a decision everyone at your age can make on their own but apperently I'm wrong
helpme! 04-01-2006, 10:16 PM Perhaps you should revisit the page in which you discovered my age. About HALF are over the age of the 18-24 range. Bravo. And by the way, I'm looking to ship. I put up that thread to get info from others about what companies are available to ship. So unless you can really give me any input specifically relating to that, go post your 5600+ posts (**** man, get a life.) elsewhere. Loser.

Glycerin 04-01-2006, 10:34 PM I merged the duplicate threads together. No need to create the same thread in both forums. Also, I think it's more beneficial to remain in the pre-pharmacy forum, so it's staying here.
A classmate of mine had her car shipped from Solana Beach (San Diego) to Winchester for $905. It took around 9 days. The company was Autotrail Transporters, Inc, and their number is 800-828-9780. :)
sdn1977 04-01-2006, 10:44 PM Hmmmm...I think my post got lost in the shuffle. Anyway, we moved out daughter's car from N.CA to NC last July with TNT auto movers. We searched out reviews on eopinions and did lots of double checking. At some point it is a leap of faith. For her & our situation, she did not have the luxury of driving out to the other coast. We found it more cost effective to ship the car - you just need to allow plenty of time. Since she was with us from the middle of June until the middle of July and didn't need the car until the end of July in NC, we had the car picked up July 1. It got to NC 3 days before she did so there were no problems. It was not damaged, had not extra mileage on it, was cleaned before pick up, so we were pleased. You could not pack it since they are not movers and do not have insurance for items. Also, weight is an issue, so the tank had to be less than half full. PM me if you want more info, but this really was a good option for her. For $3000+ miles (the truck went from Carlsbad, to N.CA, to Seattle, to NM, to Chicago, to NY the south to NC the on to FL) it was a bit over$1000.
Should I drive all the way across country? With gas prices these days...and the mileage....AHHHH!!
You asked whether you should ship or drive.
