OP are you now in dental school? If we are to understand you correctly are you frustrated with the profession or your school?

Good things (speaking from an associate's standpoint)
1) Guaranteed a job - someone somewhere will hire you.
2) Good pay, relatively speaking.
3) Set your own days/hours.
4) You don't have to move around to opposite ends of the country because your job got transferred - you get to pick your location and stay there.
5) You don't have to bring work home with you.
In regards to the "shallow & loser dentists" part, it can be lonely. :(

Seriously, if you don't like it...quit. There are thousands who would give one of their kidneys to be where you are. Go work for some corporation that sees you as a drain on their bottom line, or maybe bust your arse trying to make enough to get by on some other menial dead-end job. No one has a gun to your head making you do anything.

Spoken exactly like someone who's still six months away from his first day of dental school.
I hope you find a little more sympathy when you bottom out yourself, buried in the preclinic lab midway through second year, or maybe scrambling to talk a patient into letting you pay the difference for one last immediate denture so you can graduate. In the meantime, enjoy the wait.
To the OP: We've all been discouraged before, and most everyone here knows what you feel like. Just have to keep plugging away, and eventually the school has to cough up the diploma and let you get back to your real life. Good luck.

From reading threads that he's started it looks like he got into dental school, went there and the kids were not nice to him, and now he is trying to get into medical school.
guest 04-06-2006, 09:53 PM dude,
if you hate it that much... just get out while it's early. stop being so sour. dentistry isn't for everybody.
for me personally i get kicks out of filling teeth, man it's awesome.
i'm a third year student right now. maybe it's the little things that gives me joy, sliding on a perfectly fitting crown, giving people a new face when delivering dentures who's been edentulous longer than i've been in dental school. And looking at that final radiograph of the endo case I just did, just makes me proud.
there's obviously times of frustrations, but I assume it's my lack of experience that is responsible for it. who knows how many times I've tried getting a final impression on my bridge patient.
my 2 cents

Nicely put. And with that said, people wonder why some days I'm pretty sarcastic and caustic.

I strongly suggest you leave dental school now and give your spot to someone who deserves it. If you deceide to go though it, you will regret your decision of being a dentist. DP
guest 04-07-2006, 10:55 AM yeah, if you hate it that much, just take some time off.
we all have our up and downs.
maybe you should continue going to your medical school interviews. maybe physicians are less shallow.
you're not helping our profession much by walking around chanting that dentistry sucks. find something else to do.

OP is odd...he's complaining about dentistry as a pre-dent. From reading his posts, he's applying to both dental and medical schools this year.

he seems to have been accepted at both pitt and penn last year. this year, he is finishin up first year and he is most likely gonna drop out if he gets into a med school, as he applied to med this cycle while he was attending d-school. as soon as he started d-school, he started inquiring into OMFS without knowing much about it perhaps because he wants the 6 year program to earn an MD. he may also be contemplating using OMFS to get an MD and then switch to a med-specialty, which is sick. he is interested in becoming a physician but he has not been able to gain admission into med-school (likely due to MCAT issues since he does not seem to have landed more than one inTview at a non-competitive med-school in january) and so he opted for d-school in the hope of gettin into OMFS. he may be in a serious dilemma because he realized that he cannot just get into OMFS without having and acting on a genuine desire to perform oral surgery and yet he cannot gain admission into a med-school. he is stuck in a position he never liked. so who seems to be a loser? dentists or the OP?

Figthingspirit,
I love how you are ganging up on this guy and writing bs as usual. Are you even in dental school yet?
Why do you all feel the need to gang up on him, especially those of you who are pre-dents. Dental school sucks, there is no doubt about it. If the OP wants to vent, why must you call him a loser? He is likely simply stressed out and unsure how to handle it.
That being said, to the op: Don't confuse dentistry with dental school. I definitely don't like it right now, but I'm looking forward to the options I'll have in a few years. If you truly don't think this is the career for you, now would be a good time to switch before you invest too much time. If you think medicine is more of your taste, then by all means, do it. Don't let people here shut you down because you think dentistry isn't the greatest. It's a nice profession, but there are lots of others that are good too. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
rarm1 04-07-2006, 01:25 PM Dentistry can be great.. especially after school. Unfortunately there are few courses to teach professors how to teach... they act like bosses not like future collegues. They should by mentors not monitors. But those are rare...
I am glad to say that over 20 of the faculty at one school are all my former students from the 4 years I taught at the school... they were motivated and they are returning it to the next generation.
I am glad to say most of my residents join the staff here to help teach the next groups of residents...
fightingspirit 04-07-2006, 03:45 PM Figthingspirit,

i am not writing bs. and i never posted bs. the op is wrong in saying that most dentists are losers and shallow because it's not true. frankly, i am sick of havin a bunch of politically correct SDNers criticizing every post i submit, as though i have to be as accurate and carefull as i was when i wrote my personnal statement. i bet you if i had posted under a different username you would have not criticized my post. i have opinions and preferences and biases like evryone else, including yourself. the only difference is that i am ballsy enough to voice them even if they are going to offend a few people. what i posted has NOTHING to do with being in d-school. i dont need to be in d-school to know whether or not most dentists are losers. i dont need to be in d-school to realize that a person who is stuck in a position he/she does not like due to their own choices (most likely got into d-school as a backup) is a loser.
my take: if one does not like dental school and is applying to med-school while a first year d-student, who's mostly interested in OMFS, then one did not do his/her homework before applying or he/she was never that crazy about dentistry, period. and when he/she is stuck, then yes, he/she is losing money, time and energy, and hence he/she is a loser on life.
Dr. Dai Phan 04-07-2006, 03:55 PM Hello,
There is a big difference between dental school and dentistry, ie. dental school politics and dental procedures. It is extremely common for students to be stressed about while in school due to its hectic schedules, dealing with "bossy" professors, or trying to finish requrements. I personally do not know anyone who breeezes through school with no stress. However, if you are bored with dental procedures themselves and wonder if you can be satisfied with only "teeth", then I advised you to drop out now. Life is too short to be unhappy. The longer you stay in dentistry or in any other field, the harder it is to pull away. I suggest you look into other allied field such as medicine, optometry, chiropractic, podiatry and so forth... I am not trying to steer you away from dentistry, but I think you need to re-examine your wish to be a dentist. DP
Sprgrover 04-07-2006, 04:23 PM OP is odd...he's complaining about dentistry as a pre-dent. From reading his posts, he's applying to both dental and medical schools this year.
Um, the OP is in dental school...
1992Corolla 04-07-2006, 05:25 PM I HATE my evolution class right now. Should I drop out 5 months before I am going to start dSchool or three weeks before I get my BS Biology? In my opinion, no. I don't hate it that much. I still despise the class though (along with some others) but I am looking at the final goal. I want to be a dentist. Ochem weeded that out of me two years ago. :D
If you want to be a dentist then jump through the darn hoops. Yes sometimes we are allowed to whine and moan, but in the end that doesn't even help. Put your nose in the books and do it.
If you HATE it that much, then get out. Why not. The more time you're in school he more debt you rack up.
As far as being OMFS then do it the dental route. I think I would be safe to assume that a dental school perspective during your OMFS residency will benefit you more than by going the MD route. Get your DDS/DMD, go become an OMFS (get your MD degree that way) and then maybe you'll be happy.
Either way its something only you can decide.

i think you're right considering that the OP hasn't bothered responding to any of these posts in any form or fashion...and looking back at some others posts showed the same trend.
