I am a science monger M.D who graduated from one of the top universities in Iran/Tehran in 1993. Then, I started the compulsary medical service as a General Practitioner in Iran rural areas. I managed 650 child delivery cases plus accident and emergency cases . it finished in 1997 when I won a scholarship to do research at the University of Manchester/UK on Gynecologic cancers. Having passed MS.c courses in molecular biology, I started my ph.D in 2000 in Genetherapy of Gynecologic cancers in one of the top institute of cancer research Uk at the university of Manchester. I am writing my Ph.D thesis at the moment. I am 41 years old British citizen now (long way with no gap :) ).
I have a burning desire to enter residensy program in The US not in the UK because it will take 7-10 more years to become consultant(specialist in British term) here in the UK! because the system does not take into account my MD (7 years Medical school and Internship) more than MBBS (British medical school graduates degree). They even do not recognize my 4 years unsupervised medical practice as my experience(in their view this is a gap in my professional career!!! ). My experience seems works against me! loss of time
My question that might seem naive is: As an MD/PhD, if I want to come back to clinic and apply for residency in one of Surgical fields(OBS/GYN) in the US(of course having passed USMLE exams) how much is my age against me?
Which one of the following senarios do you think is the case for me as an International Medical Graduate and my age ?
1- Little chance for any top residency program (an old IMG). only postdoctoral fellowship posts would be possible for me and I better forget my 11 years Medical past in the US.
2-Little chance in residency program for surgical fields but possible for other specialities.
3- possible matching to residency but only a clinician after finishing residency (little chance to get a faculty job).
4-More attractive compared to other candidates (a genuine MD and PhD  ) for US universities residency programs to be a scientist Gynecologist.
I will appreciate if anybody can give me advice.
Regards
