Hurrah! Just turned in my acceptance for University of Cincinnati's new master's program. I can't wait to get started. I noticed indynshrty was accepted, but is waiting for wait lists to med schools (good luck :luck: , hopefully i won't meet you) Anyone else accepting? I'm so happy to get into this post-bacc program. I've worked two years to go to a post-bacc program, and it's nice to see that i'm going in the right direction!

Hi there! Congrats on getting into the program too!
I hope that I end up in med school vs. the program, but it's finally nice to see acceptance rather than waitlist or rejection.
I wonder how many people have been accepted so far...

my undergrad gpa was 3.1, but science is/was lower, 2.8ish. my mcat was a 32S (10B, 10P, 12V) last august. i've done research the past couple years (no publications though) and have re-taken some of my earlier science classes that i didn't do so well in the first time over the past 2 years. good luck! :luck:

I was curious, how long did it take to get a response once all of your application was in. I just sent all of my info (online app, letters of rec and test scores/transcript) in this week. I am applying a little late in the cycle. Congrats on getting in.

Hurrah! Congratulations! I live in NC but went to visit Cincinnati over Easter. I have a friend and a sister-in-law that live up there so they helped me out. Cincinnati is very neighborhood-y...i.e people talk about living in "hyde park" or "oakley". we found a place by doing a lot of online homework...i.e. cincyrents.com and just plain old google. the bus system seems pretty good. a lot of students seem to live in chelsea (i think, it's a neighborhood just north of the university) but i liked the feel of hyde park and oakley better, they are east of the university and i'll have a longer bus ride. the two neigborhoods i was told to stay away from was over-the-rhine and walnut hills. there is a super glitzy apt. complex that is being built (and already has a lot of openings) literally right across from the street from the medical campus, but it is 1) expensive and 2) nothing much else around it. argh i can't remember the name of it, but if you want to know, i can ask my friend.

look forward to meeting you all! :) :luck:

Just got an accpetance here as well! I haven't heard from Georgetown's SMP program yet but I'm very excited about the UC program.

I've been trying to get a feel for how it stacks against the other programs, with no luck so far. Is it a new program?

this program is brand new...so no stats on the people who graduate from it or what they go on to do. for me that's okay, i am a very happy guiena (sp?) pig. if you look at what you are doing each quarter, i think it sounds like a strong program with opportunities for electives.

DrDork
05-18-2006, 01:14 PM
Ahh, that makes sense. Well it does sound like a good program, and the fact that its an MS and not an MA or 'certification' (Drexel?) speaks volumes as well. Also, theres something about being one of 20 people in the country to get in a program that's making me feel warm and fuzzy inside :)

hahaha, true that. go bearcats....even though i'm not sure what a bearcat is yet. is it a bear or a cat, or a hybrid?

DrDork
05-19-2006, 05:00 PM
They sort of look like hybrids. Some kind of escaped genetic experiment that caught a ride to SE Asia and somehow multiplied...?

Anyway, after thinking about it awhile I'm pretty certain I'm going to go to UC over any other program I get into. Here's why; first of all, its the first year of the program. I suspect that they are going to bend over backward to make sure we all get our acceptances later on, thus giving the program a good success rate.

Secondly, the point of this program isn't to get some flashy degree from a prestigious university, its to get into med school. Some other universities, like Georgetown, may have more name recognition, but in the end when adcoms are looking at your application they'll see the same degree from a medical school that actually ranked higher than Georgetowns med school in the last edition of US New's graduate school rankings.

Finally, the tuition at UC is almost 9K less, and when you factor in a cost of living that's almost half that of DC's you're looking at saving 15K+ USD. I'm not sure the name recognition of Gtown justifies that much more money. The only real pro I can see to Gtown is that it'd be awesome to live in DC for a year, but again not worth an extra 15K to me. I'm there to study, not party or goof around. Well, maybe goof around a little, but you know what I mean...

So I think I just talked myself into it.... sending in check today!

Good points DrDork! I think I'm still going to see what happens with my other apps, but you're pretty convincing. I'm still really excited about the program though. What are you going to do about housing?

DrDork
05-21-2006, 08:02 PM
Hmm, yes, housing, bleh. I'm a seasoned nomad, so I'm not too worried about it. I was already planning on visiting my grandparents in Cleveland in July (I'm from California), so when I'm out there I'll just rent a car and toodle on down to Cincinnati to see whats what. So far I've seen loads of apartments for rent in Cincinnati with a little snooping online, several within walking distance of the campus. And the rent is pretty laughable compared to the Bay Area, where I am now. I have no clue whatsoever what the better areas are, however, but hopefully I'll figure that out when I'm there in July...

i went for a visit over easter and looked around, turn out 60% of cincinnati residents rent, so virtually every neighborhood has a multitude of choices. the only thing i would recommend is first sort out whether you'd rather be in a building/house or more of an apt. complex. there's a lot of options on both sides so that might help narrow your search. cinci was a little bit more expensive than i expected comparitively, but it's certainly easy to find an apt. i think.

if you want super duper nice, think hyde park, mt. lookout.
if you want artsy, think mt. adams
i didn't visit chelsea, which i think is where a lot of undergrads, college people live. i wanted something a little bit more neighborhoody. i ended up in a more matter of fact place, east of oakley. most of the neigborhoods have websites showing properties for rent. cincyrents.com, etc.

good luck, can't wait to meet my new classmates :luck:

Hey everyone!
I'm originally from Cincinnati, so I'll go ahead and post some nice places to stay - Hyde Park (if I wasn't going to stay with my parents, this would be the place that I would be living), as well as Mt. Lookout.
I don't recommend living too close to campus - the area around UC isn't the most safest.
But if any of you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I just got accepted yesterday.

Now I am trying to decide if I am going to put down my deposit. I was a bit surprised by my acceptance since I hadn't even submitted my applications to some other programs I was also interested in.

I will admit the newness of the program has me a little hesitant, also I have gotten used to Southern weather, so going back north again isn't neceassrily the most enjoyable idea for me. Yeah, I know, I got some priorities when it comes to my future career. :D

Hi everyone!! I'm glad I found this site; I plan to attend this program and I'm happy to talk to others who do too!

hauck23: I sent my check and letter of acceptance a while ago and haven't received anything; has anyone else? Maybe since it's a new program they have to put together an appropriate acceptance packet for us first? Maybe they're waiting until the class fills up.

DrDork: You're from the California Bay Area!? So am I! Small world. =) Your reasons for why you accepted UC's program over the others were pretty much my thoughts exactly. And it does feel good to be one of 20 in a class, versus 1 of say, 100 in Drexel or Gtown!

I keep on hearing people say that the area around the campus isn't too good; is this "don't walk around at night without a buddy" not good or "expect to get your stereo stolen out of your car while you watch" not good? I won't have a car at UC and I would prefer to live as close to campus as possible.

And on that note, are any of the girls attending the program looking for a roommate?

Here is the LiveJournal post (http://community.livejournal.com/med_school/279214.html) I made with feedback from some people in the Medschool program answering that exact question.

And here is my personal explanation as to why they have not sent out their information packets yet: I applied on the deadline. I was accepted very soon after my application was complete, and I was given until June 12th to decide. I am sure they are going to wait until at least June 12th before they send out their information packets so they don't have to do too many repeat mailings. Though this is all theory and not based on any inside information, because I have now. ;)

I am going to wait a week before I send in my acceptance, because I have had a fairly well confirmed rumor that the school I am waitlisted at is going to have waitlist movement either this or next week. So I still have my fingers crossed there. :luck:

However, if things don't go my way with that, I am looking forward to meeting the other 19 of you guys. :D

Oh wait, duh! I didn't recognize your screen name; I replied to that LJ post a few days ago. Wow, there are lots of responses now! I was busy over the weekend and wasn't online. Sounds like the area's basically like my undergrad college town (Durham, NC): not the safest, but if you're careful it's fine. hey lithele,

i have lived in durham, NC the past three years, lived in south durham and worked part-time in central Durham at Durham Tech- and after visiting cincinnati over a long weekend, and i agree that most people are worried about crime in both places, although crime rates show cincinnati is higher than durham per capita. cincinnati is older than durham i think, and so you see re-gentrified houses that are crazy expensive in glitzy neighborhoods, and then old homes and neigborhoods that are in disrepair. most of cincinnati rents, so i think there are a lot of options, although everything seemed about $100/month more expensive than durham on average. the other thing i noticed about the areas around campus is that i didn't see any grocery stores etc. my suggestion (and what my husband and i ended up doing) is choosing an apartment that is closer to grocery stores, etc and a bus line going into the school. i only looked at neighborhoods to the east and south of campus, not west and north, so i can't speak to those areas. a lot of places in hyde park have direct buses into campus. we ended up moving much further out due to exaspiration and having to make a choice (we have to move up there in june for my husband's job), but we are like 15 minutes from campus i think.

I've heard Hyde Park mentioned a number of times as well! That's a good point, actually, about grocery stores; I hadn't gotten around to thinking about that yet. I wouldn't want to have to walk far with my groceries. But if there are buses right to campus in Hyde Park that should solve a lot of my problems. Thanks for the advice! =) Looks like I really will have to take a trip to see UC though. Stupid plane ticket prices! They're stupendous in and out of Cincinnati!

And it really is a small world, if you've lived in Durham the past three years too! I just graduated a few weeks ago.

do we get grades at the end of the first quarter, or do we wait until physiology and biochemistry are completed in the spring quarter?

When I asked about this, they told me we wouldn't be getting our grades until March, so I guess that means the latter. Which is a bit annoying for me since I'm applying to med school right now, but oh well. D=

Oh! And I'm silly! I should have given my email address and some info about myself when I was asking if anyone was looking for a roommate. I'm a girl, 22, from Cupertino, CA (near San Jose), and I would prefer rooming with another girl. I don't drink or party, and never have; there are far more fun (read: nerdy) things to do. On the FAQ of their site, they say:

"Students are counseled after the end of the Fall quarter concerning their performance, and exceptional students may be encouraged to apply to medical school while still in the Master's program."

I don't know what that entails. We wouldn't have grades, but we'd have...faculty endorsement? I don't like assuming things, so I'll go ask them about it.

Hey guys!! I asked Dr. Banks (the director of the program) and he says that though we won't have grades to show for it, about 3/4 of the physiology and biochemistry will be done at the end of the Fall semester, and so this information will be available for any letters we may want them to write. So I guess that means even if we won't have grades, at least we'll have recommendation letters to vouch for our efforts. =)

Very interesting. Well, I guess thats better than nothing, yet I cant help but feel like they're assuming most of us will take a lag year. Bleh. And oh, btw medanthgirl, I'm 27 so I'm sort of in that gray limbo area in between as well. I don't really feel ultra-cool enough to be a non-trad, but I'm probably too old to be anything else :) .

Anyway, the plot thickens for me as I just got an acceptance to Gtown's SMP today. I was feeling pretty set on UC, but now I'm sort of in the air again... not that I'm complaining, its a great problem to have, especially after 35 consecutive rejections from America's most mediocre medical schools. They both look like great programs, and I'm sure either would be good... hmmm... what to do, what to do...

The tulane Pharma and ACP apps are open until June 9th and 10th. Georgetown is June 1st but it's online, and Drexel in July 1 I believe.

Cool thanks.

Do you happen to have a link to the tulane programs? Thanks.

Thanks! I was dreaming about interviewing after completing this program last night. ;)

And Dr. Dork, you have to come and hang with us! You don't have mountains in DC! You have traffic, and expensive rents, and sprawl! You don't want to go there. ;)

Oh man! I know exactly how you feel. 33 consecutive rejections from America's most mediocre medical school for me. I died laughin' when I read your post, because
we are in the same boat (as far as med schools aps are
concerned). So thanks for the humor, it makes me feel
less defeated.

As far as your current welcomed dilema, I would go with what's tried and tested, Gtown! I think you would increase your options for matriculating into med schools across the country. Congratz, you are on your way, with whatever school you choose.

thes_hunter; that's a good point about the rent and urban sprawl, lol. Having lived in or near San Francisco for some years I'm sort of used to over-priced concrete jungles, however. Besides, DC has monuments and stuff, right? Even though I suspect the UC program will ultimately rock, and that you guys are cooler than the Gtown folks, I'm sort of leaning in the Gtown direction now... :(

Chelator; haha, glad I could lighten your mood a little. You have to have a sense of humor about all this or it'd be too much stress to be worth it. A little perspective helps me a lot as well when I'm stressing. When you consider that many people in the world are struggling just to exist right now, our situations are a lot easier to laugh at and not take so seriously. And thanks for the advice; I agree with your analyisis of my dilemma... the tried and tested program is probably the safest bet. They also seem more geared toward getting you in without a lag year at Gtown, which I think for me will be the real clincher.

Yeah, those are definitely important things to consider! I especially had a lot of thinking to do about the second point. For me, the big reasons for choosing Cincinnati were living cost (I popped into DC right after I graduated to visit my aunt and freaked over how expensive the area around Gtown looked) and getting Ohio residency status, since I'm a Californian. Ohio has pretty friendly requirements for gaining residency status, and since Ohio has more med school openings than qualified in-school applicants, they tend to accept a lot of California applicants, a state which has uh, the opposite problem. So the possibility of future in-state tuition is a big draw for me! =) And of course, claiming Cali residence won't help me chances anywhere. Doh! Everyone wants to go to California schools. )=

Also, the Cincinnati people have been pretty nice about responding to me quickly about any questions I have; perhaps a benefit of having a small class. I tend to like smaller classes versus large ones; less likely to get lost in the crowd.

Good luck wherever you go!! Gtown is definitely the safest bet. Cincinnati is still a bit of a gamble, being its first year. It's one I'm fine with taking; I figured they'll be more likely to try hard to make us successful so that they start off strong and build a good reputation as a program.

Ohio has pretty friendly requirements for gaining residency status

all you gotta do is live in ohio for a year and then BAM, you're a resident.

and i'm not sure, but out-of-state tuition and in-state tuition doesn't really differ that much at uc. i don't find this hard to believe since uc is a "semi-state school"

I believe that's just for the program - looking at the costs for tuition for the med school, it looks to be about $13,000 difference.

Dear Brandon:
Our admissions committee is very impressed with your
credentials, and we believe that you are precisely the type of student
that can benefit from our program. I would like to offer you a position
in our masters program contingent on your scoring around a 30 on your
recent MCATs. It is my understanding that that information should
become available in a week or two. I will hold a position in our
program until those scores are released.
Please let me know if this is agreeable.
Sincerely,

Ok, on my drive up to Michigan this weekend, it took me past Cincinnati. I stopped a bit just to check out the downtown.

and one salient feature struck me. It was clean and there weren't 50 billion migrant workers standing around getting drunk and trying to pick up or pick fights with tourists.

I think I have become inured to some of the conditions in New Orleans. Even though I had put down a deposit for Cincinni I was still waiting to hear back from Tulane.

Checking out the town has made me much more likely to take the Cincinni place even if I get into Tulane.

am running into some snafus with financial aid though, apparently UC maxes out at $18500 for everything on stafford loans. when i called and asked, hey, um, that doesn't cover our tuition costs or give us anything to live on, she (the lady at uc onestop that was helping me) said that b/c the program is so expensive and technically in the school of medicine, we should see if we should be applying through medonestop, not regular uc onestop, which is for arts and sci undergrad and grad. does anyone know about this, i also emailed karen today...

I have run into the same financial aid problems, and was given even less information than you were. I would love to hear what solutions you come up with, especially if we are able to get more stafford loan money. I was told I would have to apply for an outside loan on the financial aid website.

i emailed Dr. Banks today and he confirmed that we could not do financial aid through the medical school (that is just for med students) and that you had to go through the regular onestop website. he also said that beginning 7/1/06 there will be additional federal financial aid available called Grad Plus (at 8.5% interest rather than the 6.8% for the Stafford funds, lower than what the 'alternative educational loan would be, but i don't know if either or both of those options have deferred interest). i don't know yet if we able for that now or have to wait for july 1 to arrive. i was going to call about it this week.

he also said that the University financial office will provide a Cost-of-Attendance for us so we will know how much additional aid over and above the $18,500 we will need - i.e we'll know how much to ask for.

How nice is Cinncinnati as a city?

ever since i have been telling people i'm moving there i have gotten all kinds of opinions. of the people that have chosen to put down cincinnati they have said (how true this is i don't know yet) a) it's going to be boring b)it's really conservative (which may be good or bad depending on your affiliation i guess) and c)it has some racial tension, including riots from a few years ago that involved a couple nights of curfew in some neighborhoods, but from my perspective that probably made it worse b/c they put curfew on some neigborhoods not b/c they were rioting but just because they were mostly black. so the city gvmt came off as racist i think. that was a while ago, the late 90s i think? people still say there's kind of a culture of mistrust, but i live in durham and think that is true here as well unfortunately. my sister-in-law has lived there for a while, so i remember her telling me about it.

good things i have heard/seen include that the neigborhood feeling that most of the city has, all the old buildings and parks are really cool, it's a scenic city w/ the river, and downtown, etc, lots of people run, it has one of the best children's hospitals in the country. when i visited i thought it was nice enough, especially the parks, i wasn't turned off....but my favorite city ever is seattle  so i always have that as my 10 out of 10.
