When I was in college I worked in my hometown ED. One day one of the docs walked out of a room, looked at me and said "if there's ever an outbreak of common sense, I'll be out of a job." I can't count the number of times I've quoted him on that.

can't really tell if you are serious or not so...

means that if ever people stop doing stupid sh*! and think before they (fill in the blank with any number of ridiculous things that bring people to the ED), then the ED's would be empty all across the nation.

even if you were kidding, this was a reason to +pad+

Not quite, my fellow Floridian.. I'm just trying to point out that looking down at someone (no matter how stupid..) isn't the most effective way to take care of them..
not trying to be a joykiller.. just trying to avoid judging others :o

I have found that most ER docs tend be dry and sarcastic, just like me. I wonder if it's a job requirement.

Jesus Christ. That's the mentality I'd expect from the Keepers of the Sacred Fire over at the forum for the Specialty That Dare Not Speak Its Name.

If you don't have a sense of humour about EM it can rapidly burn you out. Perhaps it's inappropriate to laugh at the stupidity of others, but they still get appropriate care, and it helps me cope.

Besides the cucumber stuck up the rectum is funny no matter what (I have pictures too!).

Half of the attraction of Emergency Medcine is that EM physicians are often the only doctors in the place with a sense of humor.

We will always have a job as long as there is Pabst Blue Ribbon and Colt 45.

Yep the Internal medicine types, and especially the surgeons are way too serious all the time. Whenever I'd crack a joke on medicine rounds, the other residents would just give me a blank stare.

It's not the most effective, it's the only way.
You're going to need a sense of humor in life, let alone in the ED.

The trauma attendings and some surgery residents and most of our rads residents have a decent sense of humor.

And the flames have started....seriously, if you want to start bein' all high and mighty then go troll over on the "funniest call from a nurse" thread in the Gen Res Forum. THey seem to have lost their sense of humor over there also.

This was an innocent post about how people (ourselves included) will ALWAYS do whatever follows "I dare you to..." when drunk, and land in the ED. Please tell me how you cannot laugh at the patient who comes in with some snakebite that he received while trying to "charm the snake" because he "saw it on TV, it looked easy". He definitely gets the treatment that he deserves, but it's still f@*(&%g funny.

Yawwn. I have actually become tired now. Tired of people saying "you EM people are callous and judgemental, to be amused at people's stupid acts." There's no judgement involved. The humor comes out of recognition. These situations are funny because they demonstrate a central truth: people can be dumb. And by the way, we tend to be unafraid to count ourselves in that category.

On St. Patty's Day, I slugged shots that my friends put in my hands, just because they were put in my hands. I'm no Nobel winner myownself. People are just funny sometimes, because they -- that is, we -- can be so incredibly dumb, or careless, or just don't take the time to consider consequences before we act. When these choices require medical attention, we attend. And then, yes, we laugh. Because there but for the grace of Tintinalli go we.

It's not a difference in kind, only in degree. One man's Jagermeister shot (followed by not driving for a few hours, thanks) is another man's cucumber up the rectum. You or I may not ever need that particular problem addressed, but it's not because we're so much smarter. Anyone who implies they are above the sort of thought process that lands people in the ED is the one being judgemental. ...And most likely wrong.

there u go.. that's all I meant.
I remember as a 10 year old I put two live wires into a bowl of water tinking I was going to make oxygen and hydrogen by electrolysis.. (I had read it in my older brothers chemistry book)..

in retrospect, that WAS dumb, and hilllarious! But at the time, nobody wasted time thinking how stupid this electrocuted kid must have been.

next time, i'll stick live wires in that cucumber.. now THAT would be funny

Wrong. They might not have said anything to your face, but you're incredibly naive if you think nobody said anything about your stupidity and/or your parents' parenting. Self-inflicted injuries almost always result in snide comments or a "Hey, you gotta hear about this...." between co-workers. And this isn't confined to adults. Pediatric ED doctors and nurses are pretty harsh behind the backs of parents whose kids have done dumb things.

Now anyone with a medical background will clearly recognize the stigmata of end stage liver disease with ascites (note the PICC line in the guy's RUE). These bozos are celebrating this dude. "Yay! You killed your liver! Horray!" That's what we mean when we say we're not worried about common sense breaking out.

Yay! Now I've got to go to the ED to get a tap since I missed my last few. Why am I not on a transplant list?

Family Medicine. The "Keepers" are FM docs.

It seems a little over-wrought and drawn out now. Panda Bear calls it like he sees it, and some FM people don't like what he says.

And then I will start my new residency in June and it might be a while before I post again. I'm posting a lot today because I am on call, it has been very slow, we got most of our admits in the morning and have been capped for most of the day. My pager goes off every now and then and I am following a few things but that's about it.
