Hi all,
was just wondering if it makes sense to visit the dental schools before applying to their programs!!!i have been advised by my medical friends that it help even in US to meet the program directors before one's applications actullay reach them(apparently it works for them). Does it work for the dentists???? i am in US on a short visit n thought i will visit UPenn n NYU if possible. anyone studying in either of these schools-"do i need to make prior appointments with the program directors? cud u guys help me find the address of the PDs at UPenn n NYU?
thanks a ton. This site is awesome.

a program director once told me that visiting the university before applying might give me a better feeling of my chances of admission, I'm not sure what this exactly means but I will make this visit... I guess it would be a good idea if you are sure that you will leave an extraordinary impression there...
cheers

jojo here :)
Well, in my case this means visiting 8 or 10 Universities because that was the amount of schools I applied to. I think it takes too much time and money to do such a thing, I mean if you can go ahead and do it, it's a great experience and yes, it will leave a great impression, you're purely proving your strong interest in the school and might give you an extra PUSH to your application.
On the other hand if you called for interview, just go there couple days earlier so you can check out the school, talk to instructors, students and so forth, this way u not waisting all that money to visit schools from where you haven't even got an invitation.
Good luck to you.

HI
I GUESS IT MIGHT BE A GOOD DECISION.
BUT WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO SAY TO THEM?
HOW TO LEAVE AN"EXTRAORDINARY IMPRESSION"????
WOULD YOU JUST WALK IN OR MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?????
I WOULD APPRECIATE IF YOU HAVE ANSWERS FOR MY STRING OF QUESTIONS.

Hey Docapd,
Hmmm...u kinda got me thinking!!! :) well i dont intent to do anything extraordinary in particular.
Like someone suggested, just going there to get the feel of the place(get impressed myself perhaps) and also to meet a few of the faculty n talk to them, show them i am interested in the school. Make myself familiar to them n also show them my credentials and perhaps make them feel even if i apply with a low 80's scroce(which i hope not to) i am worth having as a student... ;)
hope that answers ur queries

I agree with JoJo.
The right time to make a strong lasting impression is at your interview.
Plus you can hit two birds with one stone like s/he mentioned.
And yes, it WILL make a difference and they WILL remember you if you push the right buttons and say the magic word on your interview.
Good advice jojo.
