jitkarie 12-08-2007, 02:52 PM All right,

jagjit 12-08-2007, 03:02 PM well if its like that then plz tell the new candidates about ur toefl exam that will be more help ful than the spirit boosting mails ..... in addition u should give ur mail id so that they can reach u to learn more bout toefl.....that will be of great help to them so that they dont lose their money and precious time..like u did....in this way they will be better prepared after learning from ur mistakes....i hope u help them ... and can i ask u how old r u ?????? may be over 30 i guess from ur mails...an old wise friend wow..... that was a little rough but o.k i guess you didn't understood what i was saying, there was no complains here just making a point. i know things go step by step and i don't have a problem with that or any expectation so that is clear.
then about time consuming again it was not a complain, but as you said earlier we are not getting any younger or may be i'm just a little a bit old, so i think about other things like family and kids - but forget about it all.
in the end all i did is writing my point of view sharing part of my situation and that's it, belive me i know what i'm getting in to, and if i wanted the easy way i would take your advise,so thank you very much for that great advise, and for the support and of course for encouraging me to it and not give up.
thank you once again

dvmjakish 12-09-2007, 10:36 AM Well dear friend. This is your first visit to this place I assume? I would love for the new vets to go ahead and read the whole 300 + posts. They have everything you need to know and the websites that would tell you what you should do and how to start. But just for a quick note. It doesn’t matter if you are just a vet or you have a PhD from whatever country, or whatever specialty.(minor exception for couple of schools in England)
You still have to do what every one is doing. Register, then, do TOEFL, BCSE, CPE and NAVLE. These steps are your way to be license in the states.
Now after you read these 300 + posts and visit the websites that listed I, and others, would be very happy to answer your questions.

cocker 12-09-2007, 02:30 PM Hi Meavet.
Thank you for your information about BCSE. I hope you will pass it for the first time!
Also,I want to thank you for your advice about IELTS because i have done it. I fell so happy now.
Good luck,
cocker
Just took BCSE yesterday for the first time
mostly questions were simple enough as the name BCSE but It's doesn't easy though!!!!!
For everyone who are going to take this exam, lecture notes are extreamly important. A lot of questions related to clinical year
Quite a lot of x-ray to read, also 5-6 questions about artifact(x-ray and ultrasound)
try to go over basic equine stuff like denal, ageing, lameness some important infectious diseases and perfornance related syndrome.
Concentrate in small animal, make sure you know how to read CBC, blood chemistry, fecal exam, surgery also important.
~30% of Bovine questions
~10% of swine, avian and another spp.
Don't waste your time reading text books for information in detail, the exam is basic thing we've learn and practice in clinical year(for me it has been 3 years since graduated:o )
If you need more info please email me I don't want our forum to be banded

cocker 12-09-2007, 02:40 PM To everyone who has trouble with passing TOEFL:
Guys, I think some people might have problems with speaking section in TOEFL as I had and others with listening section in IELTS; writing and reading are of the same level - in my opinion. So, none of these exams is simple. But I strongly recommend you to give it a shot to IELTS if you repeatedly were in troubles with TOEFL because of speaking score. The interview with an instructor seemed to be much easier than being recorded on tape and evaluated by an ,,anonymous" person later.
Don't hesitate to send me an e-mail with questions about my IELTS experience: cocker94@gmail.com.
Cheers!
jitkarie 12-09-2007, 05:22 PM Hi Ahmad,
you don't have to be enrolled in any foreign veterin. program. You can become a board certified surgeon within the university. And for that the school will arrange the visa for you.
Surgical residency is hard to get in, though. And so is ophtalmology. You will need to have a rot. small animal medicine and surgery internship and maybe even surgical internship, unless you have some connections:)
If you don't you should enroll to VIRMP (just put in google search VIRMP veterinary), but you have already missed this year.
But if you decide to work outside the university you will have to go through the ECFVG or PAVE anyway. Depends what you want.

Hi,
I had the same question about those materials. I tried to contact them and ask more about it. They told me that all the information was online. I read their webside, but the they only have posted some samples (like 4 pages). I have herd that these information is to old... and they don't update it.
So, my recomendation is not to buy it.
The A-Z is a good source, but is only the basic things you need to read more (mosby, merck book or online) and 45 days prior to the test take the preptest (excelent!!).
Before the pretest, I recomend to study at least 5 month all the theory.
Hi everybody, I just graduated from vet school in mexico and I plan to take the NAVLE sometime next year and I would like some advice over which study guides to use. I've researched some like the Mosby's and Merck but they seem pretty dull making difficult to really follow them, how is
the vet prep, any better? how about the vcrc, is it really worth the money??
Please help
I will have CPE next year but in september. I am in the same doubts. I have received the book they send to you. I was planning to make a resume with the topics they ask and then practice some weeks. Do you have any plan?.
I have found that in Canada there is a program focus on the CPE but is really expensive!!!
Hi Everyone,
I have my CPE exam at Mississippi State in Feb and wanted to know how it is? Do they stress on special topics? Just anything that can help me I'm kind of lost now.
Thanks
Karim2006 12-11-2007, 07:05 PM Hi! What did you mean about pretest? did you mean vetprep? because I m not familiar with the pretest, if you can tell me more about it , Thanks.

Hello Jagi,

jagjit 12-19-2007, 03:10 PM i wonder where is SPIRIT OF FOREIGN GRADUATE SECTION THE "YOGA VET" ....I DIDNT READ ANY MORE SPIRIT BOOSTING MAILS FROM THE YOGA CAT.....WE MISS U YOGAAAAAAAA/// WHERE R U ????????:hardy:
jitkarie 12-19-2007, 08:14 PM Thx Jagi,
I was also wondering what has happened to everybody! They all have dissappeared recently!
So anyway, did the frog get poisoned by the dog's slobber or do people in your area hold parrot-frog fights?
dvmjakish 12-30-2007, 09:54 AM The last three days I have been going with large animal doctors “equine and bovine” out to the field in preparation for the CPE. One of the doctors that I have met has done the CPE 6 years ago. He told me that they don’t expect much of you regarding the food animals section and the equine section.
Anyways, I went to a two different dairy farms 800 and 1300 cows, the doctor checked for pregnancy and ovaries condition about 400 cows in the first one and 500 in the second, and I was behind him, I was listening what he is telling the farmer then I go and check it. After I did 40 he send me ahead of him and then asked me what I think, I was right 99%... but then after 20 of these My hand has arm was so tired I couldn’t do any more and had to take a break.I was laos helping him give hormones injections and vaccination to almost every cow depending on her case.. we saw several cases of pyometra . also we checked two cows for LDA but it was not the case..
We did the same thing in the other farm. I have to warn you this is as filthy as it gets. The smell will stick in your nose for couple of days…
I also went with equine vet and saw couple of cases of lameness (did the flexing test) and one of ataxia due to peripheral vestibular disease. it was very good to know how to check equine for Neurologic signs.. like blind fold the horse, and cross his feet and see if he correct fast, it’s similar to knuckling test in dogs. Also we did teeth float and de-worm.
It was very good three days to start with. I will be going again every Wednesday and maybe some Saturdays
I felt that this very good experience and every one really should consider doing some rounds.
Search for a near hospital around you and send them a resume with objective of doing externship with large animal vets..
I will update you in the future if there is any thing interesting or important to all.

First, welcome the forum but what you said is very confusing . What are talking about? what books that you can't get and who told you that there is 64 books you need to read?
also can you tell us if you have pass any of the exams yet.
please read this posts starting with the first page . there are a lot of information that is very helpful.
thanks.
jitkarie 01-06-2008, 05:23 PM If you mean that list of books for NAVLE that is on AVMA site, then the answer is NO, you don't have to read it.
But there is a list of topics for each species. So look ar it and then study from the books you are familiar with and those you know that are good.
If you don't have any books there is complete and free MERCK veterinary manual on-line (search from google). Also you can get books on amazon.com
There are vcrc courses for NAVLE (go thru google again).
And there are lots of web sites you can get the info from. Get the list of diagnoses from AVMA site and then go question by question.
Don't worry, you will figure it out, everybody was all confused at the beginning.
meavet 01-07-2008, 09:38 AM hi everyone
I would like some thought about VCRC , do you think it worth money for NAVLE?
or who would like to sell it second hand also welcome:)
thanks you all
Emergency Tech 01-08-2008, 05:06 PM Hello every one ....
This is really a nice site for sharing thoughts and information.. i was reading almost the 7 pages which i found that they were very helpfull...
I just have a comment did anyone notice that the BCSE exam is almost the same as NAVLE but a little on the easy side and only 250 question not 360.
so this mean that the one can use the same materials and books for both test and if i wasn't wrong .. and if the one passes the BCSE it is better to take the NAVLE before applying for the CPE ...
i am currently enrolled in the ECFVG programe and passed my BCSE exam :) while i was working in a small animal emergency hospital as a tech .
i took the NAVLE one time before the AVMA add the BCSE and i wasn't lucky i missed like 4 points on the passing score:mad:

Hi.
I have the same situation you have, work in a clinic and did the BCSE also failed my first NAVLE with one point:eek:.
Yes doing the NAVLE after the BCSE is good Idea.
And Yes I did study the same amterials but I was on the easy part when it came to BCSE.
I did the NAVLE again and I'm waiting for the results any day now.
Good luck and hope that we can help you here.

I have not seen the VCRC but I can tell you that you can pass without them. Although I was waiting for my results before I repply to you. But I'm sure I will this time.
please refere to my previous threads if you would like to know what did I use to study for Navle.
ariel1234 01-17-2008, 01:04 PM Hello DVMJAKISH, I would like to ask you how come you can be enrolled for CPE if you haven't completed NAVLE yet?
Is it possible?
gigivet 01-19-2008, 06:54 PM Hello DVMJAKISH, I would like to ask you how come you can be enrolled for CPE if you haven't completed NAVLE yet?
Is it possible?
The NAVLE exam is no longer a requirement for ECFVG. Once you are approved in the BCSE you are eligible to take CPE.
You don't have to pass NAVLE before taking CPE, however you have to take NAVLE at some point because NAVLE is a requirement of the state board. (2 separeted things).
KingTut 01-20-2008, 09:47 AM THIS IS A SERIOUS QUESTION, PLZ ONLY SERIOUS ANSWERS AND I DONT NEED BELITTLING......
While i was in the u.s. i made a few mistakes which caused me to obtain several felonies and a stint in prison (about a year) including a deportation upon my release.....heres my question....If i ever enter the ecfvg program, and pass my exam, ill have to get examed outside of egypt for the navle and cpe (so that means i have to obtain a visa) will any govt accredited to administer the exam issue me a visa? And if i ever do get the visa, would a vet. hospital employe me or would i be viewed as a danger to society and labeled an ex-con? This issue is gonna arise sooner or later, so i would like some answers that would help me, i wouldnt want to waste my time.....thanx
peace to the world.....

dvmjakish 01-21-2008, 03:35 PM Hello DVMJAKISH, I would like to ask you how come you can be enrolled for CPE if you haven't completed NAVLE yet?
Is it possible?
the rules has changed. now you can finish step #2 . the BSCE then you can do NAVLE or CPE first.
I recomend doing the NAVLE first.

you can not work as a technician, you need a license for that. BUT you can work as assistant. they are the same except for minor things that you are not allowed to do. also they pay less for assistant.
you should start with whtever you can and then get the tecnician license. it's easy one exam (computer 200 questions) and then another open book exam.

I know it cost 20,000 $ plus the cost of living. it's a whole year long.
It's better if you work in a vet hospital as assistant and learn for free with earning money. If the hospital is small animals then you can do externship at a large animal hospital in your days off or on saturday. trust me it's enough time.

thank u
As far as I know, you can't take the CPE(step 4) without passing the steps 1,2 and 3. Here is the web with all the rules: http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp
If you live in Florida you could go to Nova University. They have great classes (group or private). You could either take toefl or ielts classes. They also sell books.

There is a series of books called the national veterinary medical series. These books has been written practically for the NAVLE.
So you can cover almost everything except anesthesia.
The things that I read from Merck were about the diagnosis of the infectious diseases, FIV, FeLV, Rabies,,,, like if you get a positive FIV test in a 2 months old kitten , then what? Is he/ she really infected …
Also I read more about lameness in large animals and large animal surgery (FL UN videos are great for this part). Oh, and the hematology section from Merck too..
My story with The BCSE was, that I had studied for the NAVLE before the BCSE so it was very easy for me to pass it.
I basicly went over all the things that I read before really quickly not too much detailed.
There is a book that you can depend on of the BCSE though it has 80 % of what you need to know, it’s called ” Moby’s comprehensive review for veterinary technician” Amazon it.
some materials online…
http://www.upei.ca/~vetrad/lectures.htm (http://www.upei.ca/~vetrad/lectures.htm)
This will tell you everything about how to read an x-ray .. the one that every one love , thoracic radiology
So what I think you really should read is the national veterinary medical series . only because you have 4 more months, so when you are ready for NAVLE you will feel more comfortable reading the same books.
If you want quick fix and just worry about BCSE then concentrate on "Moby’s comprehensive review for veterinary technician". and read extra about very common diseases..

the BCSE hs a 10 % of questions as photos.. or x-rays.. the photos in Merck are great.

DAVMD 02-13-2008, 10:02 AM Hi Everybody,
I just recently find out about this wonderful network and want to take a moment to thank everyone who gives us(foreing graduate vets) any guidance for study materials and courses. I am veterinarian from Europe. I had my own practice of large animals over there. Now I am working in private small animal practice and getting ready for BCSE in order to get my licence to practice vet medicine in US.
I am glad to be here and I can not wait to share anything with anybody, and to learn something that I, obviously, do not know(failed NAVLE april, 2007).
Sincerely,
DAVMD :)

WittyB 02-14-2008, 04:22 PM Hello, I'm here helping my wife through her ECFVG process. It's been grueling, but any students who have graduated from Kafkas University in Kars, Turkey have a lot less work than we had. There is an insane amount of work (plus political foot-rubbing) to get a college accredited by the AVMA. But, it's done.
I've been reading through this, and trying to correlate books to Amazon.com, but I'm trying to find out exactly how many books are in the "National Medical Veterinary Series"
This forum has been great, I hope it stays around for a long time to come.
By the way, any Vet Hopefuls in the greater Philadelphia Area? We live up north in Quakertown, and would be interested to meet and talk to someone going through the process. We're just getting started ourselves.
first of all you should know that in NY it is enough to do the NAVLE to work, and you don't have to complete the whole program.
Maybe also in Ohio
google NY state veterinary license and you will see the info.
second of all- the uni of Florida has a program for teaching 2 the NAVLE. when I was studying I also went to the US uni's websites. some of them have the courses material online and you can just read those
good luck
jitkarie 02-16-2008, 06:54 PM Hi Veti, sorry to spoil your excitement (since I fell down on the foor as well as you:), but in NY you have to have the certification of finishing ECFVG. Not just enrollment. I am in FL which is much less strict and I thought the same as you tat NAVLE is ennough to get a licence. But unfortunately it's not true.
lizivet 02-17-2008, 05:50 PM You will be happy to know that Veti is right and you are wrong. I got my NY state license 2 years ago with doing only the NAVLE...! And I know that they did not change the rules since my best friend who just graduated outside of the US got her license 7 months ago, with the NAVLE only.
After reading your reply to Veti I went back to the NY website and I am thrilled to tell you that you are wrong. Check it out in this link:
http://www.op.nysed.gov/vetlic.htm
lizivet 02-17-2008, 05:53 PM downside is that u get a 3 year license and in order to get a permanent one u need to get a green card, which is the tricky part. I have a working visa, but after 2 years I still did not get the green card
jitkarie 02-19-2008, 01:00 PM To Lizivet
Hi Lizivet, I looked there and all I see is this:
Graduates of unaccredited veterinary medicine programs must present evidence of acceptable clinical education .....
residency ...
certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates. (Verification of any such certification should be forwarded by the AVMA to the Department.); or ....Says Certification from ECFVG.
Do I understand it wrong? Do you know anything about Florida if NAVLE is enough? Since I wish it was possible. But I have CPE in May so I will survive by then, hopefully, as a technician
Tnx, J.
K94EVER 02-19-2008, 03:13 PM Hi,
I also applied for a license in New York a couple of months ago, with just passing the NAVLE, and got a whole list of things back that were missing for the license. Among others were "proof of clinical education" like a residency or clinical year in an accredited Vet school (which I don't have) OR ECFVG certification (which I will only get after passing the CPE). So in the end it doesn't seem to be so easy to get the license... Maybe you guys were more lucky? Or is there a trick, something I missed?
Thanks for any input I can get.
To Lizivet

jitkarie 02-20-2008, 06:25 PM Hi K9,
that's what has happened to me in FL!:)
Got the whole list of missing things.
But you have CPE in April, no? So you have to survive only 2 more months.
Good luck at CPE!!!!

Could I please have a little more verification on the NY Licensing issue? Perhaps, Lizivet, there was something that you had done in the past that satisfied the clinical requirements for the NY state license. It looks like this isn't really a viable alternative, and if it were, it would only be valid if you lived in the state.

WittyB 02-25-2008, 06:09 PM Are there any folks here who have participated in the BCSE Exam? I'd like to know good study guides, besides the 70-odd books that they have listed on the test website. It appears that the Mosby Technican handbook seems informative, but there has to be more.
Thanks!

you should get the national veterinary medical series they are good for both BCSE and NAVLE. they are the reason I passed both, although they are not enough 100% for the Navle but I got 90% of total what I have read from them.

Janim 02-26-2008, 07:27 AM Hello,
I will be travelling to Kuwait within the next 2 months on work. Currently, I am not a student, but I do wish to study simultaneously through my work period in Kuwait. I am very interested in Veterinary Physiotherapy and I have been given to understand that I would need to specialize in Human Physiotherapy first.
I doubt though that Kuwait has educational institutions in relation to the above, but the internet shows Dubai as one of the places in the Middle East where such a study is possible.
Does anyone know if online study is available in this field? Who could I speak with in Kuwait / Dubai that could advise me on how to go about this study? I have absolutely no idea on costs, specializations, study material, etc. and need to talk to someone who can give me good brief on what I should do.
Thank you!

I just check the forum now, then sorry to answer your questions late:),
I am not familar with PAVE,but know about ECFVG.First of all you should get your Toefl or other English languages and after that you can be ready to take BCSE. It's about Basic and Clinical materials. Most of materials are about students notes about Anatomy & Parasitology& Toxicology & Pathology and Medicine and also Surgery,Anesthesia.I think, this exam need just some general information, not details. The best advise about BCSE and NAVLE, is DVMJakish's advise that he mentioned in #352 (same page) and exactly depond your time and plane. As he said if you have more than 5 months, it's better you'll start NVMS books and don't waste your time with 10000 of other refrences, but about me is different and I don't have time (just 2 months) and I can read my university's notes.
Hope you find your way and be ready for exam.
Cheers,
Farzin.

jitkarie 03-04-2008, 09:09 PM Hi guys,
if any of you are going to do the CPE in Tuskegee, I have heard that they have lots of goats there all the time so prepare for the goats. They have sheep there only rarely.

Stefan Viziru 03-06-2008, 05:04 AM Hi all, I am a new member and I would like to congratulate you all for working toward your professional recognition. Together we can win! We are all in the same situation, working hard and studying at the same time. But we can win, many other people were in the same situation and took the exams
1. For the beginning, did anyone use "Hemogram interpretation in dogs and cats?" Did you find it useful? It is about 80 pages (with a lot of pictures, not too much text), half of the book is on CBC interpretation (clinical cases).
2. I would suggest sharing materials (including links, thanks dvmjakish & all). I have several materials, including VCRC books and mosby SCANNED and I was just wondering if other people would be interested in sharing books, e.g. 5-min VetConsult or NVMS.
3. As to Merk, personally I don't think it is a good option since it focuses too much on details.I can be used as a reference book though..

Stefan Viziru 03-08-2008, 02:13 AM Hi Hpo,
I have VCRC scanned and I am interested to share it for that anatomy book- do you have it scanned? It could also be useful for you, once you scan it you can take it on your laptop wherever you go
by the way, do you have other books, e.g. 5-min veterinary consult?
foreignvetdocto 03-08-2008, 07:36 PM hi, i'm a veterinary doctor from morocco, i will come next month to usa with
J1 visa with the section 212E ( two years home country residence rule) to
do an internship for one year in a dairy farm in wisconsin.
My goal is to stay in usa after the end of my program and to be legal
so what will be the best and the easier to me to do :
To work like a veterinary assistant and apply for a waiver( J1 waiver)?
or to find another intership in the unuversity and apply for j1 program
extension ?
Do you have any idea ?
Thank you.

I think your best chance is Work visa. H1B visa. this is a two year visa, and can be extended every two years up to three times. You can also apply for immigration and get green card as a worker. you just have to find the right place to work where your employer likes you so much that he would help you get green card from employment.

thank you for your advice, i know that for having a J1 waiver, the solution will be to find the right employer that will help me to have it, so i need chance :)

DAVMD 03-09-2008, 08:12 PM :) Congratualation to all of you who passed NAVLE or BSCE. Unfortunatelly I have not passed NAVLE, so now I am facing BCSE. Dera DAVMD,

I think this will be impossible mission to scan 600 pages it's illegal and also very time consuming. it's worth the money to spend. Remember that you are going to be a vet in US and you will eventually need these kinds of books in the future. I recommend this book instead (http://cote.clinicalvetadvisor.com/ (http://cote.clinicalvetadvisor.com/))
Stefan Viziru 03-11-2008, 11:41 AM oh, sorry, I did not realize it is such a big book:( 600 pages is quite a lot..
mahit002 03-11-2008, 09:28 PM hello foreign grads
I wonder why is it so difficult for many to get the NAVLE prep manual or CPE guide. Coz I know in other fields, you can get most of the test prep manuals in book stores or libraries. I am also having a problem in getting the manual. One more thing........what if someone out there build a website (ofcourse not for free)for all foreign grads, for many of the fields that need licensing, to guide us through all the process and provide us the materials needed for the tests.....BIG RELIEF!!!!!!!!!
Please those of you who passed the test (both written and/or clinical) help the others (including me) to get access to the manuals and study strategies.
Thanks,
Moonpaw 03-11-2008, 10:25 PM Hi all,
I've tried looking for the answer to my question, but so far no luck. I'm about to graduate with a bachelor's in Biology in the US, and I might go to RVC for vet school. However, I do plan on coming back to the US. Does anyone know if there is any "bias" against foreign veterinary graduates, the way there is against foreign medical graduates? Also, since RVC is accredited by the AVMA, will I have to take any extra exams upon returning to the US, or will what I've done in the UK be sufficient?

Thanks,
Actually,the website already there. it's http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp#steps
this should answer all your questions about how to become a vet in the US. also they will e happy to answer your quesions.
If you read the 9 pages of posts here you also find a lot of questions that has been answered.
after that I and others will be happy to answer anything that might still be confusing.
NAVLE don't have a manual but there is a website also that give you smale questions some are free and some are paid for. the one you pay for they will give you a results that will reflect howgood you are and show you your weak points. here are the websites.
https://apps.nbme.org/navlesa/welcome.jsp
http://www.nbvme.org/?id=23&page=Sample+Questions
as fars CPE manual the will send it to you when you pay for the CPE. You will not need it before that. also they change it all the time, I have two so far. I think you just concentrate on the current exam you will be doing and don't worry about future once.
there is no right way to study , everone does it diffrentley . and every one use diffrent books and materials. you need to know everything and concentrate on the common stuff. in my earlier posts I have mentioned what books I have used to pass BCSE and NAVLE. this doesn't mean that I'm the right way...
hope this help.

Guys, I have a few questions I'm m striving to find answers. I hope someone here knows the answers (maybe dvmjakish?)
1) BCSE, unlike NAVLE, does not mention the % for each species so that students know on what to focus more.
For NAVLE for example it was 50% small animals, 25% horses if I am not wrong, etc.
2) NAVLE had a more intelligent approach. i.e provided a list of topics, while BCSE does not. This is not very helpful.
Should we still rely on the list of topics from Navle? (at least for pathology)
3) It is unclear how much the passing score is (or maybe they didn't decide yet, is a kind of percentile rank??)
Once these questions addressed, BCSE may prove be easier that the last navle. What they do is to increase over time the degree of difficulty, which means we should take bcse as soon as possible. Correct?
dvmjakish 03-12-2008, 02:56 PM Thanks dvmjakish

1) BCSE, unlike NAVLE, does not mention the % for each species so that students know on what to focus more.
For NAVLE for example it was 50% small animals, 25% horses if I am not wrong, etc.
As far as I can remember the BCSE has the smae amount of % questionas the NAVLE. the exam was 220 Questions about 25 of them photos, mostly x-rays ...
2) NAVLE had a more intelligent approach. i.e provided a list of topics, while BCSE does not. This is not very helpful.
Should we still rely on the list of topics from Navle? (at least for pathology)
Study for the BCSE as you are doing the NAVLE. trust me you will pass. and the NAVLE will be smooth.
3) It is unclear how much the passing score is (or maybe they didn't decide yet, is a kind of percentile rank??)
they never send you a score. they send me a letter says. PASS. So I will think it's also similar to the NAVLE. I did very well on the BCSE I think I would get 90% easily so I can't help you with this one, If I wasn't sure I will pass and I did then I can tell you that it might be 70%... so to be safe paln on answering 165 question correctly out of the 220. I think there is 20 questions that are for future testes that they don't count just like the NAVLE has 60 of them.
Once these questions addressed, BCSE may prove be easier that the last navle. What they do is to increase over time the degree of difficulty, which means we should take bcse as soon as possible. Correct?
I Hope this help. ............................

I have used other recourses for Avian, and exotic. The Florida Un videos are great for these sections.
the exotics concentrate on the video and write everything down. Also if you read the exotics in Merck really quick you might get some additional info.
You guys should spend most of your times reading small animals and equine, bovine, then ovine caprine, . pigs ,, I hate pigs..
I have mentioned earlier. When it comes to common viral diseases, like FIV, FelV, .... CDV,.... you need to read them from Merck or other good book. The national series is not good enough for these diseases.
As far as anesthesia, I have mastered this part from doing it for living. I have collected tons of material over the years and made my own paper scraps. but any anesthesia book out there is good . you will need it for future reference so buy one now.
Best book ever is the Small Animal Surgery (http://www.amazon.com/Surgery-National-Veterinary-Medical-Independent/dp/0683039105/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205370250&sr=8-3). This is really all what you need to read for this section. its great and no need to read any more for surgery in small animals.
Study the internal cavities are important to know your way around especially in horses and cows.
Please read as much as you can and concentrate on most common diseases, you will get weird questions and only few will know them.
If you can read the Merck, do it. Get a highlighter and mark the good stuff, so when you read again only read the marked stuff, this will help you save a lot of time when you do the NAVLE or when you read for second time.
I know everyone study in different way, so do whatever you used to, this is not good time to change and try new ways to study.
Try to understand and make sure things make sense this way you will remember it. Memorizing is not going to help you unless you have hard drive in your head. I know some people do.
Make a schedule for your self try to read everything twice if you can, and keep the last day before the exam empty. Sleep in , go out side and see a movie , just have fun and don’t think about the exam. Sleep very well the night before and don’t read anything in the morning.
Last, DO NOT FREAK OUT ,I know easy to say hard to do.. but I have to say it. I am freaking out for the CPE, but this one is different .. 6000$, plus 1500$ for other stuff, and people are watching everything you do…

gigivet 03-13-2008, 09:43 AM The percentages on BCSE are about this:
-Medicine (etiology, diagnosis and treatmentof disease and dentistry) - 25%
-Principles of surgery and antesthesia - 19%
-Diagnostics (techiniques and imaging) - 14%
-Pharmacology, physiology and toxicology - 14%
-Pathology - 13%
-Anatomy - 11%
-Preventive medicine - 10%
I just took BCSE and I was pretty confortable answering all the questions. What I can say about studying is like dvmjakish said: everyone has to find the way of studing that works for you. I used a variety of sources. What I suggest is first start on making a plan of study and follow it.
-Florida's lectures are pretty good, take notes about them, BUT do not rely just on what they talk about, they give a very very brief overview of SOME of the diseases, go further with large animals. The large animal internal medicine from the nacional veterinary medical series is really good and if you follow it, you will pretty much cover everything. But be aware that the book is from 1997 and the dianostic session is not accurate any more, so follow diagnostic procedures in Merck or somewhere else. And also, some of the "newer" diseases are not there, for example West Nile Dz. Keep in mind the common diseases (as dvmjakish suggested)
-Do not think that if you study superficially you will pass. You won't! So make sure that you know in depth every single common disease.
-I am totally small animal, so I didn't go over much of small animal. Study more the things you know the least.
-I studied a little bit of everything: even histology, physio, ... and what amazed me was the fact that even though there were just few questions about those topics on BCSE, it helped me relearn everything again and this was awesome even to answer clinic questions. It help you to think linearly and succeed in all qustions. That's because I think the big problem, at least in my country, is that we do not focus much on learning the basic subjects in vet school as they do here. And also as dvmjakish said: we all are vets and the more you know, the better you are. It is for our on good! So buy books and keep them coz they will help you in the future.
-In summary, I used nacional series for large animal medicine + merck for diagnosis, florida lectures, my own books, anesthesia I used the Oklahoma lectures, they are awesome: http://instruction.cvhs.okstate.edu/vmed5412/ (http://instruction.cvhs.okstate.edu/vmed5412/) and the most important thing I did: I took notes of EVERYTHING and read those notes days after the test.
As you all know, we are not allowed to share specific questions, so here is my experience. I hope this help some of you and thanks for all of you that are sharing your experiences as well.
I will be happy to help anyone that still have any question about BCSE.
bridgi 03-13-2008, 11:53 AM Hi everybody,
I'm the mother of a graduating vet in Germany. I live Texas as a permanent resident-soon to be citizen. I applied for a family sponsered visa for my daughter (2.5 y ago), but it will take some more years. She wants to come "as soon as possible".
I'm helping her with that and came across this forum. I read it with great interest and gathered a lot of information. I still have some questions and hope some of you can answer me:
1. is it possible to get a working visa for a Vet Technician job (H-1b ?)?
2. does anyone know how the chances are to get an internship thru the matching program?
3. If you don't pass the ECFVG or PAVE do you have to pay the whole fee ($ 6000) again for the next try or how does that work?
thank you
a desparate vet mon :o

dvmjakish 03-13-2008, 07:10 PM Hi everybody,
I'm the mother of a graduating vet in Germany.
1. is it possible to get a working visa for a Vet Technician job (H-1b ?)?
yes. Try animal sanctuaries and shelters . she can work for them as a technician even though she is a vet , this way she is doing something the american vets will not do . this is how thing work usually with H1B visa. they pay less but they would help to get the Visa. the visa will cost around 1500 without attorney. it is good Idea to use one.
2. does anyone know how the chances are to get an internship thru the matching program?
This i don't know..
3. If you don't pass the ECFVG or PAVE do you have to pay the whole fee ($ 6000) again for the next try or how does that work?
First fee is only 1000$, this is just for registration. then you pay for the English exam . which is 150$ or so then the BCSE, I think it was 170$ , then the NAVLE around $450. then the CPE 6000$ . if you don't pass any exam then you have to pay again to do it.
Except the CPE . this is 6 sections exam if you pass 3 of 6 then you only pay 1250$ for each section you fail and you have to do it within a year. if you fail 4 or more out of 6 then you have to do it all over again and pay 6000 $. for more info visit this website.

hi, i'm a veterinary doctor from morocco, i will come next month to usa with
J1 visa with the section 212E ( two years home country residence rule) to
do an internship for one year in a dairy farm in wisconsin.
Thank you.
Hi,
I read that you are going to do an internship in dairy farm. If you want to study something else, then it will be a good idea to apply for another J1 (I think you only can apply 7 years for this type of visa then you need to change to an H1b or green card). But if you are not planning to study anything else I will recomend to apply for a waiver (take like 6 month to do all the paper work). You need to find the waiver before you finish you internship.
These videos for everybody ... videos for many diffrent procedures .. good for CPE .. ENJOY
