I'm pretty sure (99%) that UF has an online study/class/lecture series geared towards foreign grads sitting for the NAVLE. Not sure how to get it though...maybe contact someone important (ie. not me) at UF. :)

HI!
I haven't been checking this forum for a long time because I wasn't getting answers at the beginning. Today I openned and I found many messages. What tells me, that there are many foreign veterinarians out there trying to get the licence but with not much help available.
I got my degree in Peru in 2000. I worked for a while there and then moved to US. I took ESL classes for about 2 years and after that I started working as a technician. I'm enrolled in the ECFVG program but I'm still in step 2 (I haven't been able to get 26 in the speaking section of the toefl yet :( but I am really close)
At the same time studying for the boards. I have compiled all the information about all we need to do about requirements and forms in every step and for taking the NAVLE. Most of the information is available in the AVMA web page and NAVLE page. I also have some information about the books we need.
Are you still in Peru? Did you pass the TOEFL? or Are you giving the boards soon? I really would like to start a group of study with all the people that is planning to take the boards.
Let me know, and tell me your name
I hope to hear from you soon UPCH

Hi, I graduated from veterinary school in Kiev Ukraine, then I worked in Morocco as a veterinarian. I came to the States, I'm also enrolled in the ECVFG program, but I haven't passed step 2. I didn't get the speaking passing score of 26. I would like some advice from people who already passed the english proficiency exam. I'm also preparing at the same time for the NAVLE exam and would like advice for this as well. I would also like to meet other people in the same situation.

Hi,
I just passed the toefl (finally) in January and I'm taking the Navle in April. It took me a while to pass the toefl because of the speaking part. I think the key to pass the Toefl is just practice, practice, practice and don't talk in your language too much :) Good luck!

Hi guys!
Just in case you don't know there are 2 ways to get our license.

One is through the ECFVG program of the AVMA
http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/default.asp

the other is through the PAVE program of the AAVSB
http://www.aavsb.org/PAVE/PAVEHome.aspx

Here is a link where they compare both programs:

Hi: If you are not certificate veterinarian technician: Don't worry, you can work as a tech. The only thing you need to know is to convince the clinic you apply for that you are able to perform: lab work, withdrow blood, put iv catheters and inhalation anesthesia. I worked as a tech for about 3 years and I quieted to study for the navle, and I'm still studing, I failed last Dec but I'm gonna pass in April. My advice: Don't be discourage, it takes time but you will get your liscence, step by step.

Hi,
I just graduate as a Vet in Peru and I was looking for information about the tests that we have to take to be licensed. So far the mesanges thar I've found here where extremely usefull. But today I found that now we are suposed to take another step 3 on the NAVLE and ESFVG webs.

Did you know that "Beginning with the fall 2007 NAVLE administration, ECFVG candidates will no longer be able to take the NAVLE as part of the ECFVG program. This will coincide with the introduction of the ECFVG's new step 3 examination"? (http://www.nbvme.org/?id=14&page=Information+for+Foreign+Graduates) :scared:

Looking foward to exchange more information,
Nic.

Hi guys, i was looking for material to prepare for the CPE exam and i found this forum. I am a graduate from Mexico but i've lived (and practiced vet med) in the US since 2003 (in a place where i don't need license). Nevertheless i want to have my license to be able to get another position if the opportunity comes up. I did not passed the NAVLE exam the 1st time for 5 points (pretty painful) so i decided to have a better strategy for my last attempt (last December); i passed with 100 points over the mark so it's possible. It takes time and discipline. Here is what i think is a good approach, may not work for everyone but it's a start:

1) Preparation notes from vet students in 4th year- i found this to be the key. I got them from my students that were sitting at the same time i was. The notes were comprehensive and with what you need. Contact (maybe trough this website) 4th year vet students in the U.S and ask them for NAVLE review notes. They have review classes and are the best. The A-Z review that is floating around is SO outdated that i did not find it useful.
2) Concentrate in dog, cat, horse and cattle medicine; if you don't have time for pigs and small ruminants, exotics, etc is OK. Everyone freaks out about pigs but in reallity if you cruise on the other topics even if you fail pigs, you are OK.
3) Use Merck or other good books (Kirk, Ettinger, Nelson) for big topics, do not rely on summaries, MOSBY, etc for that. Read them well (all the endocrine stuff in small animals, infectious in horses, etc).
4) Review topics using the UFLA videos (>20 videos), take notes of them and read them again before the exam. Do not use them as only source. They take time (videos are +/- 1hr or more) and if you write notes up to 3 hours but worth to write notes.
5) Sign in on Zuku.com review (free, and OK) or vetprep.com (not free but great) and practice after studying.
NOTE: You will not be able to pass studying only on Q&A books or websites, believe me.
I studied an average of 5hrs a day since July (after the WorldCup :) ) and took my exam on Dec 8th, so 5 months of hard work but it paid off.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL, and do not get discourage if you don't pass the first or 2nd time. IT IS DOABLE.

Thanks for the review Carsan98. It is the best I've seen since in here.

I'm preparing for the fall administration, so It would be a pretty hard summer, working as tech and studying for the NAVLE.

I got two questions,

1/ I've heard the toughest exam is the CPE, or clinical, and that now there is no way of doing an intership or a residency to convalidate it. Is it true or there is still a program where to perform the internship instead??

2/ Have you use the VCRC? I just bought them, but still waiting for the shipping. Is it a good source to use and trust??

Thanks in advance!!

I graduated vet school in Poland and I passed my NAVLE and now I am getting ready for the CPE. It has been a long and difficult process but don't give up. The best advice I can give you is be familiar with the NAVLE content and know what your weakness is. Large animal or small? and focus on that first. I am a native english speaker so it was easier for me but we all learned this school too! I think that USA vets think differently then those from Europe. I learned by being a vet tech many helpful things that no book could teach me. I highly recommend working at a good vet practice (needs to be good teaching environment) with techs and drs who will support you and teach you. Don't give up, you can do it. Write me at ski05liv@yahoo.com if you have questions or need anything. Good Luck!

I am new to this forum. I have heard to have Merck's manual as your guide to study. I personally do not like it because it is too elaborate. Have you any leads on this. I will greatly appreciate your help. I am in the same boat as you are in.

Dear vets from all over the Earth!

Is it possible to prepare for NAVLE and CPE without working at vet clinic?

What kind of a job possition is possible to take since I'm not a certified vet yet?

Yes, if you want, you can apply as Vet Tech in the hospitals. That will give you lot of experience.

I'm glad I found this forum. I also took the Navle without success, the passing score is 70 and i got 63, I wasn't prepared for all the equine questions. Now the ECFVG has come up with the new test, they said sample questions will be posted at the end of May along with some literature as referece. Any suggestions to study for this test? I have the Mosby materials, Merck and some study materials but they are probably 4-5 years old. I read that people are having trouble with the Test of Spoken English, my advice is SPEAK LOUD in the test and if you think you did well and your score is low send them a complaint letter; it worked for me.

Hello. I'm an American studying veterinary medicine in the cayman islands. Hopefully some of my insight can help you guys.

1. Someone mentioned the ECVFG eliminating the "clinical year" as a substitute for taking the Clinical Proficiency Examination (CPE). This is TRUE. Now everyone will be required to take the CPE.

2. There is a difference between students completing their clinical year at a US veterinary school vs. completing a clinical year of study to substitute the CPE. 3 veterinary schools in the Caribbean have direct affiliations with US veterinary schools, and we complete our final year, or clinical year, of veterinary school at one of those affiliated universities. The ECVFG was referring to a clinical year of study after graduating from vet school. But since this option has been eliminated it doesn't really matter anymore.

3. I believe the Merck Manual is a very good study source for the NAVLE. However, it is very concise and I am afraid it will not be strong enough to stand alone as a supplemental study guide.

4. There is also a second option when trying to obtain US licensure. It's called the PAVE. It appears that the ECVFG is becoming more and more like the PAVE, as the PAVE already requires a written examination before you can sit for the NAVLE. The only drawback to the PAVE is that only 24 US jurisdictions currently recognize it, but this list is growing every year.

5. I have constantly heard good things about the University of Florida's supplemental material to prepare for the NAVLE. Someone has already mentioned the details about it on this thread, so I would recommend looking into that.

Hope this helps clear up a few areas. Good luck everyone!

i've seen a few references to these videos at florida, but no link to them. can you post a link? i went to the cvm site and did a search but found nothing promising.

as for practicing in the u.s. without a license, i believe if you work for a university (some universities - minnesota appears to be one), you're covered under their umbrella somehow. for those of you who haven't yet passed the navle or may not really want to, it's an option.

cheers!

This does not work. You can not have a license to practice in the particular STATE and get under the University umbrella, but you do have to be licensed in at least ONE state (which requires passing NAVLE).

Hi guys!

What source are you using to study for the BCSE. If we were to get books on each subject we would have to spend years to learn everything. Is there any outline of what is important, what is not, or any study material focused on BCSE preparation?? Someone said the VCRC also prepares for that, but I have some doubts about it. The BCSE sounds more general, Navle more specific. Has anyone already sat for this exam??

Hi!
I am a european graduate and also just passed the NAVLE :hardy:, after failing once in December. I prepared for 2 years, mainly by taking the Mosby questions, identifying my weak areas (small animal endocrinology!) and reading up in the Merck, 5 minute consult, etc..
The only thing I am reading for the cpe at the moment is the Mosby's reviews for the CCT, small and large animals, which is old and not really what the cpe is going to be like, I guess. Has anyone ever taken the cpe, does anyone know what to expect? How do you guys prepare?

I would still go through the Mosby review books, even if they are old, and concentrate on the basic/clinical basic books. Compare with the list published by ECFVG if you covered the areas. The actual test questions (at least in the NAVLE) are pretty much how they are in the MOSBY books. The NAVLE was purely clinical, so I wasted time going through basic stuff, but it sounds like you are going to need it for the BCSE. Good luck - it is possible to pass! Just sign up and go for it, even if you fail, at least you know what you are dealing with :luck: !

Hello,

There is a list of questions in all species at NBVME web site:
http://www.nbvme.org/?id=25&page=NAVLE+Activities+and+Diagnoses%2C+2003
I went thru all the questions to make sure that you know: Etiology, epidemiology, Clinical signs, patology and histopathology findings, diagnosis and treatment.
I was studying 5 months only from MERCK veterinary manual (which you can find on line) and from www.zukureview.com. Plus some questions extra from small animals, exotics and horses. Small animal neurology and anemias you have to study in details.
Wish you all the best and luck!!!

before any exams you have to register with ECFVG or Pave, the first is easier. then you need to work on your english so you can pass the TOEFL. once you are registered with the ECFVG program, they will guid you and tell you what to do also their website is very clear on how you can start.

Yes, I agree, and I can't tell you why. Be aware that these questions popped up numerous times in the NAVLE too, usually as a table with positives and negatives, and lots of questions about predictive values etc.. I can't tell you where, but you'd better read up on some epidemiology book. I was fortunate enough to pass the NAVLE without really understanding these questions...

hi Everybody...
i am a veterinarian from India and have just arrived in america. like many of you i am also planning to apply for the vety licence in USA. i have found that under the new licence examination system there are two ways to appear for NAVLE. either get registered with AVMA (ECFVG channel) or with AASVB (PAVE channel). the advantage with AVMA is that it's registration fees is $1000/- while of PAVE is $1050. secondly if your high school education medium was english then you get waiver for english language test under ECFVG pattern.

don't know how to start preparing for new step BSCE. what is it's syllabus?
i am going through Merecks Manual as that's the only book i am having at thsi moment.

I did the NAVLE last April, and I scored 424. as you know the passing point was 425, Lucky me, I failed , I though it was very funny , one point....

I know that the reason was these questions that I never knew any thing about. 4-5 questions that I'm sure they were all wrong. It's funny that none of the notes or books that I went through, and they were too many, ever mentioned these questions.

Well, as long as you don't stop laughing... Or do I read some sarcasm between the lines? Anyway, with a score that high you will pass next time
I failed the NAVLE once with 398, and passed the second time with 431. I went through the Mosby questions a few hours daily, just to stay in the "exam-mode", and it helped. I agree, there were a lot of these questions. I had a foreign medical examinee explain them to me (without much success), and couldn't find these tables in any book either. The other thing were regional infectious diseases and deficiencies that you just don't know about if you graduated in another country. Some contacts to recent US graduates would certainly be helpful.
I am still trying to find infos on what to study for the CPE, especially Pathology, Anesthesiology, Surgery and Radiology. Does anyone know what is expected of an "Entry level Veterinarian"? I am currently preparing for the CPE myself (will take the exam end of September) and am facing the same questions. I am basically folowing the CPE Exam Manual - it has descriptions on what exactly you are expected to do and how many points you will get for which skill etc. It also has a list of all common diagnoses/topics at the back of it. You get the booklet when you pay your deposit for the CPE. Other than that i am a bit cluless myself and have not been able to find anyone so far who has actually done the exam.
There is a list of common diagnoses on the ECFVG webpage, but nothing for these specific topics. What did we get ourselves into, I wonder sometimes...
Good luck to you all!

I'm hoping that I will pass next time, it won't be funny if I don't.
I met a vet in a veterinary conferance in Seattle couple of weeks ago who did the CPE several years ago, I couldn't get much from her except how much she was upset over spending long time doing pig autopsy and not having enough time to write it.
But also I have red in several places that once you pay for it they will send you a manual that would explain what you should know.
I've been working as vet tech in referal surgical clinic for over a year now, that was the best thing I have ever done twoards my Goal.now I know everything I need about Anethesia, surgery , and radiology.

Hi,i graduated from Cairo university,Egypt, i live in NYC ,for the basic scinces(ANA,histo, physio, patho, pharma) i depend on my notes and mosby and some from the vcrc and i listen to FL lectures
what about the vetprep ,tell me about it?
besides that,on the ECFVG web site ,there's a table for the BCSE exam subjects, they didn't mention microbiology or parasitology...do you think we might have any questions in the exam related to those subjects???

I believe we would see some questions on those topics. The vetprep is a computer based preparation course. You can visit their website at www.vetprep.com (http://www.vetprep.com)
I think it is quite helpful, let's see.
I've already been that close to pass the NAVLE as dvmjakish (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/member.php?u=143428), I didnt pass it by 3 points. I know the feeling.

hi guys, check this website:

http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=SRC&S=0&SourceID=42 (http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=SRC&S=0&SourceID=42)

it has most of small animal diseases with photos, in very simple language.it should cover lots of question about pathology and medicine.
this exam seems to be very similar to the vet tech exam I did 3 years ago, so I'm also reading the Mosbys comprehensive review for veterinay technicians. , this book is very good for basics.

Yep, we did serve ourselfs a mighty big plate there, but now having come so far you somehow have to stick it out... It hepls knowing you are not alone though...:o

In the meantime I received the CPE Manual - now I'm feeling even worse! You are right - it tells you exactly what you will have to do. Looks like we definitely will have to get some more practice before presenting to the exams. I won't get an appointment before next year, though. Where are you going to take the exams? Hopefully you will share your experiences with the forum after the CPE. Good luck!:luck:

I know how you felt when you got that manual - i just thought - no way! I have had it since last year in autumn, so I have been adjusting to the tought that I will be doing a very costly experiment. I am schedduled to take the CPE in September in Las Vegas Since the start of this year I have been doing externships with equine vets, food animal vets, and a smal animal hospital, to get some more practical experience. But if all of this will be enough, I don't know. :(
I will definitely let the forum know about my experiences - I find it singularly frustating that no one who has taken the CPE has come forward for some information!

 Don´t know where to start!!

Hey!!

You are right. The answer is ''D''. Formula for the POSITIVE PREDICTIVE VALUE is
PPV= true positive(TP) / true positive(TP)+ false positive(FP)
This value is always in percentage.
SO answer is 83 per cent

Best Regards

To all out there who have received the manual for the CPE exam - I advise you to call AVMA EVERY MONTH - or even in shorter intervalls before your exam to make sure you still have the curren information and not one of the ex have been changed! I just leanred by pure chance that the manual I was preparing after got updated in January this year and the AVMA forgot to tell me this - so now - 4 weeks short before my exam date I received a BIG shock to find out the small animal exam has completely changed (with a compeltely ridiculous writing part!!! that counts for 40%) and the Anesthesia exam too!!!

Have any one checked the Basic and Clinical Sciences Examination (BCSE) practice test.
the last question is driving me crazy,

Any one agrees with me that the answer is D not c?
here is the link

http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/bcse_practice_test.asp

The last question is D (and it says that also at least now).
How you do this problem:
Positive predictive value= true positives/(true positive + false positive)

So PPV= 30/(30+6) + 30/36= 83%:)

The waiting time on the CPE will depend on the availability of open slots for the exam (anything from half a year to a year). On the application form you can pick your first - I think it was 5 - choices where you would like to go - And they will scheddule you according to the availability of places (try not to go to Las Vegas!)

That is a tough one if you are full-time working! I basically spend 3 months with an equine vet (did'nt have much horse experience), 2 weeks with a cow practice and 2 months in a small animal clinic. Perhaps you could find an emergency clinic and do there a couple of hours a week? What I did was basically copy the pages of the exam on the animal species I was working at the moment and gave them to the vets - so that they knew what specifically I needed to be able to do - the cow vets were really good - they went point after point with me through the list. And the veterinary nurses were very good sources for the clin path exam. Another tip - I heared in Oklahoma the radiology exam is very difficlut - you might want to pay special attention to that. The Thrall is the book you should go through for that. Good Luck!!!

Yes I did. Well, If you read the previous threads you would know that I failed the NAVLE for 1 point 424/ needed 425. So Preparing for the BCSE was very easy. The exam was really simple. Although they never said how well I did, (they only tell you only passed or failed). I'm sure I have scored 85-90 %.
To compare that with NAVLE it was a joke.
Time was never an issue like it was in NAVLE. In the Navle you hardly have time to read the question , they were long and confusing sometimes. In BCSE I was able to read and answer the question twice. and had some extra time.
At the NAVLE you go from section to other where you no longer able to go back to questions from section you have finished. (60 question each).
BCSE in other hand, you have access to all questions at all times.

There were no tricks in BCSE except one question which had absolutely two correct answers and until this day I couldn’t know which one is better answer.

If you read the books I mentioned you will do well. Also don’t forget Aesthesia, blood, and histopathology .Radiology, and clinical pathology photos where 100 % clear and easy. I wish I had 50 % of this quality in the NAVLE. Navle photos were bad, really bad.
Good luck.

BCSE in other hand, you have access to all questions at all times.

There were no tricks in BCSE except one question which had absolutely two correct answers and until this day I couldn’t know which one is better answer.

If you read the books I mentioned you will do well. Also don’t forget Aesthesia, blood, and histopathology things like vaginal swaps in dog…() . Parasites questions were very few, 3-4 with very nice photos . you will know them for sure.
Radiology, and clinical pathology photos where 100 clear and easy. I wish I had 50 % of this quality in the NAVLE. Navle photos were bad, really bad.
Good luck.

hi carsan can u provide me some cpe material.thanxHi guys, i was looking for material to prepare for the CPE exam and i found this forum.

What I meant was that I passed Step 2 but cannot pass NAVLE. Now we are supposed to take the BCSE but have not started studying for it yet. For what I read from the other posts is that is easier than NAVLE. I am looking to join a study group is someone is interested. Any comments on Study materials for this?

Hi~ there~

I am wondering why more candidates want to take BCSE rather than QE...

Is ECFVG esier than PAVE relatively?

I think PAVE has more options in terms of Step 4, ECY.

Please let me know why most people want to get the license through the ECFVG.

Thank you~

Hi I am a foreign veterinarian from Spain who is currently living in the US. I have completed steps 1-3 for the ECFVG and I am taking the CPE next month. I would be happy to give advice about the first 3 steps and I am looking for advice from anyone about the CPE. Good websites or resources?

Hi colleagues,
I'm a vet from the Czech Republic and I live in the USA now. I'd like to get the license but I'm still at the beginning. Unfortunately, I've passed TOEFL yet even if I've been there thrice:(. Does anybody have experience with IELTE? Somebody told me that it was easier than TOEFL...I'm fighting with the speaking section:thumbdown. And could you give me any advice about BCSE please?..which books are absolutely necessary for study etc. I'm really terrified seeking what I shall repeat. I've forgotten all anatomy and....

Thank you very much for your help and I wish you good luck :luck:!

I can help you with the IELTS..
I just did mine on the 22nd of September, now I will tell you about the European exam which i would expect to be the same as the North American too. I am preparing to do the British license to practice as a vet. here. RCVS
So IELTS is -in my opinion - very easy and YES it is easier the TOEFL. The first section was the listening part which had a CD playing, before the CD starts playing they give you 4 or 5 sheets that has 40 questions mainly fill in the space or choose on of the choices based on what you hear, you will need to listen very carefully as the answers could be some times deceiving and not the exact word (sometimes you need to get the meaning of the word and the word t self) I doubt you will have problems with that.. Just try to practice more listening which I would imagine you do living in the USA, just notice they do use different accents in the CD (Canadian, Australian..Etc). This part was for 50 minutes. (Not sure).

Second part was the reading part where they start by giving you few sheets and there is 3 different long paragraphs on them (if you are doing Academic IELTS it will have more scientific words in them), this section has 40 Questions too distributed through the three paragraphs, BE CAREFUL you have to get sued to reading fast as they might be long if you are not. a good strategy for answering would be to look for the question then try to locate the answer within the paragraph before reading the whole thing.
This one was for 60 minutes.

Third part was the writing part which is for 60 min. This one they give you two questions, one is a graph and you comment on it (20 minutes) then the second one is a subject mainly scientific 40 minutes
You have to write for the first one at least 150 words so be careful of the words count, and the second one is 250 words at least.

$th Part - is the speaking part , This one takes a part usually at least 2 hours after you finish the first three were you go 1 on 1 with an instructor. They take you to a separate room and they ask general question ... like tell me about your self then they will ask things like name some one you know and you like spending time with and tell me why you do like him/her and what do you do with him/ her...etc. THEY JUST WANT TO SEE IF YOU CAN CARRY A CONVERSATION.. They might ask you to speak about a subject for 2 -3 minutes. This takes 15-20 minutes MAX

NOW it might be worth mentioning that there are two types of IELTS - General and |Academic, The Academic is the one for professionals...
Hope this helps...
Best of Luck

Hi There...
Glad I could help.
To do the British Exams you need to pass 3 steps...
First is to do IELTS -even if English is your first Language- if you graduated from a university not accredited by the RCVS.
Then you do a written exam (Not an MCQ) All written for 4 subjects (Horses, Farm animals, Poultry and Nutrition). This is usually held in May- June of each year, only once a year.
If you pass the writing part you will need to pass the practical exam (4 days or a week of exams usually in July) it is held in once the Vet schools. It tests your knowledge in the same fields beside the knowledge of local British Laws and regulations.

If you pass it then you will be registered with the licensing authority the UK (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) and you will have the word MRCVS member of the Royal College of veterinary surgeons next to your name.

The main problem is that these exams are held only once a year
The written and practical exam cost 1250 UKP around 2500 US$.

Now if you are an EEA citizen which you are ( I would imagine you are) , Then if your university is one of the accredited university by reciprocal agreement then you do not need any exams at all.. You just pay the fee and register... You have to check with them though.

www.rcvs.org.uk

Do you know any one who did or planning to do the UK exams?? The main problem with all the systems on the internet is they are made to help people prepare for the North American and not the other exams.

Cheers

Unfortunately, I don't know anybody who needs to do the British exams. I have one friend working as a vet in GB but our diploma is recognized by RCVS so that he hadn't to pass the steps you have mentioned. I' m sorry.
Anyway, I cross my fingers for you.

P.S. I have a question. Was it difficult for you, I mean the listening (especially those various accents) and the writing section (to make a comment) in IELTS?
