I will be a MSI in August. I wanted to do research this summer so I can get a head start when writing my proposal for next year's medical student research program. The only job offer I got for this summer (which, as I mentioned above, is where I plan on working next summer) is in the dept. of ortolaryngology.

Ultimately, I would like to do a residency in IM (and then specalize).
Does it "hurt" me (during IM residecy interviews) that I am doing research in a non-IM specific field? Would it be better for me to wait and find a summer job in the area I'm interested in going into?

Essentially I was wondering, wouldn't I make a stronger applicant for a particular residency program if I demonstrated my interest in that program by doing research in an area specifc to that residency?

I would appreciate any and all advice.
