I'm scared!

My motto is don't be scared, just prepared. The prof I interviewed with said the most important parts of succeeding at MCP in his opinion, was staying organized, and not letting yourself fall behind on the material.
If you keep this in mind, I'm sure you'll be fine.
Plus, if you are aware that it isn't a cakewalk, you're already one step ahead in my opinion.
:)

That is exactly what I think. I am preparing for the worst and maybe it will turn out a bit better. We just have to be prepared to work our butts off...I guess we will see!

Well there are people who graduate, so it can't be too bad. I agree with pharmforme, it shouldn't be a cakewalk, but it will be doable; plus we get to shave a year off!
Sadly, my main concern is handling the change from Oklahoma. I think if I can get through the first few months, I'll be fine. By the way, where is everyone else from? Just curious..

chea small world it is...well in answering the questions about people being anxious about book list...there are certain books I may recommend you guys getting and some that you definitely will not need. At this point in time, they have not posted the book list, and to be honest, I didn't get the list at all last year. I literally bought the books i needed during orientation week. You can try to check the website in July for the list. Good luck all...

I'm not aware of any meal plans, but there are some schools around, but its not walking distance. My best advice is to maybe start to learn to cook now? I may be available to show you some tricks of the trade if you would like as I will be living in the oncampus apartments. Other than that, you can always go out and buy food at the local restaurants (which is somewhat inconvenient). But your best bet is to learn to cook, which is a skill you'll need to have in this wonderful world.

I'm not sure if they will be changing the editions to the books or if there are new editions, but for sure you will need the books for the US Healthcare/Public Health class, the Human Physio/Pathophysio books, and you can possibly share the calculations book with a roommate. Biochem book is a hit or miss, if you feel that lecturing is not enough, then you may want to purchase the book, but information will be lectured and referenced from the book along with homework problems. That is all I remember from fall semester....good luck... (in other words most of the books for the fall you did need at some point)

I agree with Teak on this one--there are so many schools in Worcester that you could probably buy a meal plan from one of them, but none are in walking distance. It's probably not worth driving just to eat some cafeteria food.

As for cooking, Trader Joe's is a great resource. They have lots of frozen items that require minimal cooking skills, but taste awesome and are pretty healthy. It's not within walking distance, but you can certainly stock up there for several weeks at a time.

Last year, us commuter students got our parking passes during orientation. You just fill out a form and they give you a key card on the spot. I don't know if the resident students can get one sooner, maybe on move-in day.

Our white coat ceremony was during the 3rd week of classes. They bussed down the Manchester campus, so we were all together. It was in a nearby hotel, walking distance from campus.

To be completely honest...I felt the same way you did about coming into this school, but there is actually alot of work to be done. You all have done a tremendous amount of work just to get here, definitely take a deep breath and smell some of the roses, b/c come fall, those roses may smell a little off...and believe you me...there will be plenty of work to be done before you are finished with this school....

Yea that is true, I am studying quite a bit, but that is due to the numerous exams they are giving us this summer. It is definitely a good attitude you are having, and being realistic is definitely something you have to have when you get into the grind. I only post as necessary here. I started a topic a while back but haven't gotten much response towards it. Oh well. 2 months away for you guys and gals, you all should be a little excited. I know I was last year coming into it. Well start prepping if you can, get your financial aid in ASAP, and don't under borrow on your loans, you will need pretty much what they are estimating...GL

I will take an additional private loan other than goverment loan. I have a couple of thousands in saving but I will be spending most of the money for moving cost. Also, I will try to find the least expensive room and work for a least two days a week to get some cash for food and mis $$. I am not trying to be scared by the cost for education in that it is an investment for better future, but IT IS SCARY~~

Hey- I'm in OK and I got mine today along with my financial aid package which made me want to cry! I took out the max on loans and I'm left with $1200 to cover books, food, and everything until the start of second term. This is freaking rediculous! If you haven't applied for loans yet and need to- keep in mind that their living allotment is tiny!

astevens
07-03-2006, 06:34 PM
I'm wondering how I'm going to afford anything! I'm on campus and was left with litterally pocket change to live on for four months. Do they realize that this school is not in the cheapest part of the country? The living allotment for students living off campus at Oklahoma University (where a nice apartment is aprox. $400) is the same as MCP allots us- crazy. Sorry I'm just a bit overwhelmed with how I'm going to survive.

DRx Niceguy
07-12-2006, 11:03 PM
The only amenities available for the dorms is a regular sized fridge (which is small for 6 people to share), stove and oven, showers and sinks. TV is on your own, but there is cable connection along with internet, heating (which is necessary for the winter) and A/C (which is great for the summer thus far). Basically, any and all appliances that you use for food processing is on you the resident. Thats right no dish washer either. But there are laundry machines in the basement. You need to bring full/queen sheets (unless you are in a single room, which you may need to have twin), pots, pans, dishes, and whatnot that you may need to survive for cooking on your own. Toiletries, etc. In terms of appliances, you may want to converse with your roommates and divide up on the appliances.

ON a side note, the summer break as of right now is 4-5 weeks and winter break is 3 weeks. There is a week break after the spring semester. However, there is talks that the summer semester (which is currently 10 wks long is going to change to 12 weeks and this will cut into our summer break)

oven/stove is available...but you would need to get a microwave oven, toaster, etc. If you are not planning to stay in the same room, you would need to vacate, but b/c this is an oncampus "apartment" housing, it stays open

I was thinking that they were splitting us into 2 groups with 1 group testing in the morning and the other group testing in the afternoon. The only reason I thought that is because Manchester only has 4 hours of testing blocked off and we have 7 hours so I figured since we have more students they are going to split us in 2 groups.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking...my sister is getting married on Saturday so her rehearsal dinner is on Friday night (which i'll miss unless they are splitting us into 2 groups and I'm in the 1st)

Anybody know when we're gonna get our schedule and book list????

For people arriving early/bringing family:

Holiday Inn Worcester is like ~$100/night.

Go buy an "Entertainment" book and when you book a hotel room on the holiday inn website pick the entertainment book rate.

I know that the entertainment books are really cheap right now because they are yearly and the new one will be out soon.

The rate is $59 a night.

You have to show them the card when you check in but they didn't check me when I interviewed back in January.

Taxi to MCPHS is ~$10 one way.

They also have a FREE shuttle (within 5 miles). They take you to the campus for free!!!

Also, how are the two airport shuttle companies from Boston Airport? Do they let you bring big bags for move in?

You will need the physio, all public health books, biochem (sometimes for background info, but may need it moreso in the spring semester), calculations book can be shared between people.

Hi Cangelilli,

Which website did you order your books from? Did you research for the best price or maybe that's not practical for availability & possible discount on shipping? Thanks for the input!

Also, to all the females in our class, how are you dressing for orientation? Business casual or a suit or a dress? I just would like to feel comfortable with my attire and curious as to what everyone is wearing. Thanks guys, see you soon!

Hey Guys...I bought all my books as well and ordered most of them from half.com. I compared the prices to those listed on the tatnuck website and I saved about $275. All but two of the books are brand new. I haven't recieved any yet but I'll let you guys know how it works out.

I got my books on half.com as well and saved money too, although the books were a lot of money overall. I always get my textbooks through there, it is quick and easy. Just make sure you check peoples ratings before buying from them. For orientation I figured business casual, dressy capri pants, dress sandals and a nice shirt. Is that what everyone else was thinking? Good luck!

Hi, all. I really need your help.
Does anyone know how I can get to MCPHS(Worcester) from Boston.
I am seriously worried about this.
I have some luggages that I will carry and I already had many of my stuffs at storage room near MCPHS. But I do not know how I can get there without a car from the airport at Boston. What is worse, I have no idea how I can carry all my sttufs from storage room to dorm. I want to pay someone who help me for all this, but I even don't know where I can find such a person.
Where MCPHS students put thier post for rent, used books or whatever we need there?
Thanks in advance. Thank you guys.

You can take the commuter train for cheap. You can bring luggage but I don't know if you have a lot. You must take a bus from the airport and then get on this train.

Also, you can take an airport shuttle (www.wlimo.com) This costs about $50.

I'm guessing it's the notes/slides/powerpoint stuff etc. As a person who is currently taking Orgo II and spends most of her time frantically copying notes off the chalkboard (instead of actually learning it) b/c the prof is afraid of technology, I'm SO HAPPY to spend the $ on this. THRILLED!

Wish I had known about this site when I started at Worcester. Dropped by to say hi and that I am an Asian guy. I am so happy to finish the first year in this crazy hard program. I wanted to welcome all you p1's the best of luck and great memories here. Block Scheduling is just splitting the class up for the Computerize Grammar test, which is just to see where you are at in your reading skills, the results do not affect any of your classes. Pharmforme is correct, the course packets are all the notes/PowerPoint slides for all your first semester classes, which are needed to follow the lecture in class.

If the course packets are well organized, I really don't want to buy any of them as I didn't buy most of books when I was in undergraduate. Anyways, hope I will be able to survive in the crazy hard program.

Rxsticker, thanks for your post! Any hints for us newbies? I'm curious, how many people didn't make it thru year 1 due to academic reasons? Any advice is appreciated...I think we're all so nervous we'll take all we can get!

Ya know, all of us entering P1 should try to get together and meet in a few weeks before classes start. Whaddya think everyone? When would that be feasible to do (since many are moving here)?

I bought all the required books (none of the suggested ones), and I actually read all the assigned readings for each. It helps to clarify the notes, since they are just abbreviated thoughts and highlights, as well as to clarify things the professors say but you don't quite catch. I need complete, organized thoughts before I can use the highlighted lists and stuff in the course packets.

Yes, that's what I did. I think we got our permits the first day of orientation (maybe it was the second), but it was definitely before classes started, so you should only have to pay for a day or two of parking.

Wow. It is 60-70 F and it is raining periodically over there according to Yahoo weather.

What months are the "don't go outside"/"shovel snow" months? When does it get really cold? Around end of Nov? No one is selling big jackets here in California yet so I gotta find some time to get one over there.

Also, are there a lot of California people? Maybe I should join the California people clique if there is one...

And how bad is it to wear yankees stuff in boston? Don't really follow baseball.

The weather here just sucks all year round. It went from freezing and snowing to about 1 month of solid rain every day (no kidding) to 90 and muggy. It totally skipped nice. It totally skipped spring.

Last year it didn't get cold until after Thanksgiving, and I don't remember it being really cold until about Xmas, but all the locals said it was a very mild winter. There wasn't nearly as much snow as I expected, so I'm not sure what to expect this year. You'll have plenty of time to find a winter coat when you get here--I think most department stores probably have them out now (I'm in NY this week, and all the stores here have them already).

I don't know that many people in my class, but there are a few Californians among the students I do know. Not sure if there is a clique...

I don't have any Yankees gear, but I do have a big "I Heart NY" bag and an "It's better in New York" t-shirt that I carry/wear a lot and I haven't been beaten up (but I have received several comments). I also had an I Heart NY pin on my lab coat until it fell apart....maybe I should get another one this week. I also refused to wear a Red Sox hat at work during some promotion a few weeks ago, and no one cared. You should wear some Yankees stuff--not that I'm a big fan, I just like riling up the Bostonians. They're an easy target.

Yes, I had to get a CA license. CA requires fingerprints, which MA does not. During our week off in May, my boyfriend and I went to Seattle. We scheduled a 3-hour layover at SFO, where I hauled ass to the Burlingame police department to get my prints done. They prefer that you have them done electronically within the state instead of getting them done the old-fashoined way and mailing them in. They apparantly reject a lot of them that way, wasting your time and money.

Here's the intern application: http://www.pharmacy.ca.gov/forms/intern_app_pkt.pdf

Hi! First, good luck applying. The Dean said they got 1200 apps last year and accepted ~150, so it is competitive but your stats seem good.

I'm a P1, so keep in mind I've only had classes for 3 weeks. We had our first exam today and I think I did ok! So far it's been made very clear that the workload is going to be high. We have MANY exams, and it is of the utmost importance not to get behind, or ya won't be able to catch up.

I have to say, due to the MCP-Boston slamming that I've heard on this website, I was minorly concerned about the program in Worcester. I'm happy to say that so far all I've experienced is that MCP-Worcester is efficiently organized, with fantastic, helpful, experienced, receptive professors, and staff who seems genuinely interested in making our time there as positive as possible. The students are professional, and show respect for what we are doing there. The class is very diverse, in ethnic background and age, which is nice. I don't live in the dorms, have heard varying stories about them ranging from mediocre (like someone with 5 roommates) to very good. They are very new, which is a big bonus. I've been in a few of the rooms, and some have huge windows overlooking the city and some are very small. I often wish I had the convenience of living there...you don't even have to go outside to go to class (there's a connector hallway) and there is a convenience store at the base of the adjacent building.

I honestly am thrilled with the school. Everyone from professors to staff to older students were very welcoming and helpful.... From the 2-day orientation, to the welcoming outdoor bbq where the faculty and deans sat amongst us, to the student peer mentors, to the party at Jillians that the SGA threw when we started. LOL, even the woman at the security desk who checks our ID's every day always has a smile and a kind word for us!

The worst thing I can think to say about it is the parking situation was a little frustrating at first...the garage nextdoor sold out their spaces before we even started school....2 friends & I ended up carpooling to a garage a few blocks away for @ 75/month and will be using a closer garage in the winter for 130/month. Oh, and you can't bring beverages into class (grr from a coffee lover, but I've been told the SGA is lobbying to change this). Other than that, I'm really happy so far. Don't get me wrong, the workload is tough, b/c it is a lot, and you have to keep up. But it's doable if you go into it with the right mindset. From what I understand about the Boston program, it is a significantly different student environment, so keep that in mind. As I've said before on here (and now I KNOW I'm right b/c I have the study-to-do-list to prove it) if you intend to go to MCP Worcester and party all weekend, well, that won't work. With MCP Worcester I think you get a more intimate, focused environment. In my mind the school gives off a supportive vibe, NOT a cutthroat one some schools emanate. You can feel the pride of the professors who are grads of MCP, and the students. So far, I think it's a nice community.

Just my thoughts. Sorry if this is too long. Too tired and don't have time to edit or be concise lol ;)

If you have specific questions, let me know :)

I am also a P1 at MCP-Worcester. I agree with Pharmforme 100%. Last year around, I have been accepted to a couple of schools and I am happy to be where I am. Schools are very well-organized and most of professors are awesome. I don't know what's going on with Boston but what I can say is that Worcester is different from Boston that a few ppl described in some posts.

If you expect a campus life like huge state/private schools from MCP, you don't want to come here. You will be very disappointed. However, I believe most of students don't need that kind of campus life anymore because most of us (~75%) already have a BS/BA. As a graduate program, I think MCP is a nice program to study and advance your career.

Answering the greatdeals225's question, Worcester is not cheap area to live and one bedroom apt is about $650~900 depending on the area, neighborhoods and cleaness. Worcester is not a great city to live or hang out in my opinion. There is actually nothing to do around here but it is a good place to study though. Sometimes you don't want to go out because you don't want to drive far away.

I own (or should I say the bank owns) a house in a section of Worcester about 5 minutes away from the campus, towards Paxton. The school really is in the center of downtown, so the only residentials are in "high" rises. Several of my classmates live at 600 Main- within walking distance, but I don't thats cheap either. As for the roads looking like Mexico, not sure what you mean? There is a HUGE amount of restructuring/improvement going on right now in Worcester, so there is some road construction. Remember though, the part of Worcester you saw (downtown) is not all of it. Worcester is the second biggest city in the state, and there are many different "areas" of it.

Sometimes you don't want to go out because you don't want to drive far away.

It's funny, you'll really find people of two different mentalities living here. One is that it's boring, nothing to do, etc. These are usually expressed by those who love places like Boston. The others feel as I do: myself, I don't like Boston, it's too chaotic, crazy and unfriendly. Worcester is a city that is just the right size for me. Everything is convenient (unlike the suburbs) but it doesn't make me crazy like Boston. Worcester has more of a community feel to it too, which I think is appropriate for studying pharmacy.

As for "nothing to do", well, I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. It may not be as obvious and well-advertised as a larger city like Boston, but there is lots of stuff to do here. My neighbors moved here 2 years ago from DC and go out all the time on their own and with their kid to activities all over the city and region, often free ones. Today there is the "Pulse Fest" for college students - like a big convention. If you think there's nothing to do, go to www.worcestermass.org, and see for yourself. There's libraries, parks, movie theatres, play theatres, several museums, and ecotarium, a convention center, and I think 9 colleges. That's just in Worcester, not even including the surrounding towns. NOW if you're coming here without a car, well, duh, it's gonna be more difficult, but there is still the bus system, train to Boston, and taxis. I personally love Worcester, but as Imkim illustrated, it isn't everyone's favorite! It isn't party central, but I think it is a great place to live and learn.
Good luck to you on your decision!

I am also a P1 and agree with the previous posts 100%. I have friends at many other pharmacy schools around the east coast and have heard their many complaints. This school has been excellent so far. We do not experience practically any of the problems I have heard of other schools. Our professors are awesome, I can not explain them any other way, they truly want us to suceed and are always answering questions and clarifying things. It is definitley intense, which we are about to feel full swing as our testing has started up. But it is definitley doable if you really put yourself into it. I am from Maryland and I really like Worcester so far, now I am from the country and now am in the city so I think there is a ton to do here. I am not sure compared to other city environments. There are tons of restaurants, bars, shopping centers etc...(not that you will have a lot of time to utilize these establishments lol) But I am living in a 2 bedroom apartment about a mile from the school, in a nice area, and it is $1100 a month plus utilities. There is definitley a higher cost of living here, but you will get what you pay for. If you don't mind living in the city and having roommates you can find something a lot cheaper. Well, I hope this helped, if you have any specific questions just send me a message! Good luck!!!

Hi 06pharm,

I had my interview there last week and got my acceptance letter after 4 days! People there were super nice, especially the professor that interview me. The interview was very laid back and more of a conversational type of thing. About the essay don't worry about it very general topics, something u might do in your introductory english class. I believe they just look to see whether you can construct proper sentences, have proper gram. and things like that. I am sure you will be fine, just relax, go into the interveiw feedbacks here on this site for MCPHS, and prepare those questions well (that's what I did). Good luck!

Anyone entering Fall 2007?

Congratulations on your acceptance!! if you don't mind me asking, when did you send in your application? i got a letter confirming that it was complete on 11/3/06.. i'm wondering when i'll get a letter :P.... just out of curiosity, what outfit did you wear? top-bottom matching suit or something else? was everyone looking about the same? i just want to have a feel of the atmosphere......
by the way, are you from massachusetts? i'm debating whether or not i should sell my car if i'm going to mcp worcester..... since i won't have time to go out anyways... i'll metamorphosize into a bookworm

I submitted my app mid September. As far as what I wore just a plain black suit with one of those dress up shirts underneath. And another girl that was interviewing she had pretty much the same thing, I believe as long as you look little professional you will be okay. Answering your third question I am not from MA, far from it like NC, and I probably will not be taking a car either, because its going to be expensive, driving there much different than NC, and like you said we won't have much time to go out. I just need to figure out how I am going to pay for tution lol, thats my worry now.
Well, I hope this helped, good luck with everything.

Hey guys, congrats on the acceptance and interviews and such. I'm a P1 here at Worcester and just to give you a heads up- If you come here you may/will want your car. I live in an apartment with 5 roommates on campus. At the beginning of the year I was the only one with a car, however with service learning off campus first semester and the shadowing rotations in the spring, all of my roommates have either brought up their cars or will be doing so for the spring. The school is pretty big so they sometimes send you to rotation sites a decent bit from campus and as they will tell you 50 times, transportation is on you. So, if you don't bring your car, don't sell it because you may want it later!
Well good luck with the application process and if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

I honestly think that there will be negative feedback for all schools. Just because a couple of people that did not do well decide that a school is no good, it is not necessarily true. I have no complaints with MCP-Worcester, I am a P1 so I have not had therapeutics yet so I cannot comment on the teaching styles in that class. Be careful where you get your info from also, because I hear a lot of bad comments coming out about the Boston campus and this is different. The one complaint was about 10 week semesters, but we have 14 week semesters plus exams. The teachers that I have experienced so far have been out of this world, they want to help you learn and understand the material above all else. It is in a major city, so of course parking isn't ideal, I didn't expect it to be. I do not have any complaints or problems yet, make a wise decision and look at all sides of the story! Good luck!!

I'll be there...we should start a separate thread for MCP-Worcester c/o 2010. It's a good way to get to know each other a little better seeing as how we'll be spending a good amount of time together come Fall.
