I took the LECOM post bacc program the spring of 2002. I can answer what ever questions you might have. It's really "mini medical school" and is great preparation for the real thing. Let me know what you need.

oh thats great to have someone who completed the program answer some questions. I have some questions myself....

What percentage of successful students are admitted into LECOM after the program? and, would we be able to apply to other DO and MD schools afterwards? in other words, does excelling in the program enhance your application to both allopathic and osteopathic medical schools?

Thanks much

Can you describe a typical schedule of classes during each semester? How many students were in the post-bacc. program? I think I heard that you some classes with the medical students? How helpful are the instructors? How are the tests?

Well if that's the case...when will you be moving to Erie? When did you get your acceptance letter? Have they already mailed you back the information regarding the program after you mailed your agreement to accept being accepted (you know what I mean)? I hadn't gotten my information, yet. Do you know when classes start?

DrA

I got accepted mid-april. yes, I sent in the agreement but still havent recieved anything yet. I just emailed them yesterday, they said that i should have recieved housing information by now (which i didnt), and financial aid info will be sent soon. i dont know what day classes start, but i assume early sept. email them to let them know u didnt receive anything yet, otherwise they will never know. Im going to Erie this weekend to check things out, probably moving sometime in august... what about u?

I would say from my post bacc class approx 95% were admitted to the LECOM DO program the following fall. Of the other 5% either went to medical school somewhere else or podiatry school. I know of one student who did not apply because he could not get his undergrad grades released to apply.
You can apply to any school you want, you just apply to school through AMCAS or AACOMAS like you would usually. Yes, the program enhances your chances because of the level of the coursework - what they do is give you the first semester of medical school over that year. More time to learn the material you will see again.

THe classes in post-bacc cover the same topics as the first semester of medical school. Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharm, micro, path, immunology. I don't really remember the "schedule", there is anatomy every week and the others are taught around anatomy. It really depends on the profs schedules during the day classes.

No, you do not take any classes with the medical students. They attend during the day, post bacc is in the evening 6-9pm Mon-Thurs.

The insturctors are the best. They really give you a lot of time should you need it. THey are at school during the day so if you needed help they are available.

The tests are set up like standard board exams. All multiple choice. The anatomy in post bacc does not include lab or dissection but you do get one day to see the bodies in the lab and Dr. Buck goes through how the lab works and you get a chance to ask the volunteer med students questions about anatomy practicles, etc.

I think the post bacc class I was in had about 50 students, a nice small group.

I only took the second semester of post bacc, but I think the first semester starts in Sept after the med students have been there about a month.

How soon did you have been in the program get to Erie? What does this mean?? Confused???

Appts: There are plenty of housing options close to the school. Many students stay at WIllowwood which is nice and very inexpensive. But anything that's on Peach, Grandview, Zuck road, or W 38th are all close. I know a lot of folks are unhappy at Granada off of Kuntz so steer clear. I never lived in an appt so I don't really know. You would have to give me a specific address and I can tell you how far it is.

I must have been sleepy when I wrote the above questions...I see I made a lot of grammatical errors. I guess I was asking, "For those who have already been in the program, how soon did y'all get to Erie before the program started?"

I moved to Erie in July because I was in the DO program (class 2005) and got there 2.5 weeks early to set up my house, figure out where the post office was, the school, my kids school, the grocery stores, etc. I like to know ahead of time. I would think for a single person a week would suffice.

I had a lot of difficulty in the DO program due to personal issues and things that happened so the school put me in the post-bacc program the second half to give me some help and keep me enrolled. It's a great program - it really saved me. So I graduate here in 4 weeks, class 2006.

They probably use the same form from the medical school side where students get paired up as roommates based on certain preferences. That's the only thing I can think of.

So will you be attending the program or still not sure? I went to Erie again the other day. LECOM had an open house-type of event. I really loved the school, the city, the faculty and the students i met. Also, I have much more appreciation for osteopathic medicine now. It was great. Just wanted to share...they will be having another one in june and in july, you should go if you can. :)

My name is also on the list, but I'm not sure if I would like to have a roommate or not. And no, I am still not sure if I am attending LECOM or not (I'm still waiting on another letter from another school). I did visit there in March and also in April last year. I had an interview this past March and I accompanied a friend to her interview in April 2005. Because I stay thousands of miles away, I'm not sure if I will be making the open-house events. I will let you know when I decide for sure on LECOM. Just out of curiosity, are you an underrepresented minority?

Hi,
I think it will surely boost your academic record, since its a post bac program. and as i know, if you do well in the program, you have a much higher chance of getting into med school (not just lecom) since the classes are basically first year material. Im not exactly sure how the grading system works. If youre thinking of applying for this fall, you still have time. I went to the open house last week, and they said that they are still accepting applications. :luck:

Yeah, Brian is a very nice guy, even when I met him in person. He will answer any questions. No, im not waiting to hear from any schools. This year is my first time applying actually. I didnt plan on attending this program earlier, but since I didnt do well on the mcat twice, I thought I should have a backup plan just in case. Plus I didnt want to waste a year just sitting around. Hello, I completed the post-bacc program last year, and can say that I couldn't have gotten into medical school without it (TUCOM-CA, c/o 2010) So I wish you all the best.

Now for grades, if you look at the schedule:

http://www.lecom.edu/lecom/application/post-bac.asp

...you'll see the classes for each semester as well as the credit breakdown. You'll take exams for each subject and subsequently, earn grades for each. A's are given 4.0 points, and so on. Those grades are multiplied by the corresponding credits for each class and then divided by 60 (Total # units multiplied by 4.0) to arrive at a cumulative percentage for the semester.

I'm sure you or others viewing this thread will have more questions to come, so please don't hesistate to shoot me a PM, and then I'll answer them in public so all can see...I don't always check the Postbaccalaureate forum. Please bear with me however, as I exist in the land of the employed; and will respond as quickly as I can.

hi everyone!

I have ALSO been accepted into fall 2006!! however, i am a predent student and am wondering if it is still doable as a pre dental??

my acceptance letter says that I must maintain a 3.0 and take the mcat and get above a 20.....but I DO NOT PLAN on taking the mcat again. so any opinions from you guys in here?

will it still be beneficial to complete this program but am NOT pursuing medicine?

Why did u take the mcat if you are pre-dental? Im not sure if this program would be best for you if you plan on going to dental school. I think the main purpose of the program is to gain admission to medical school, but also to enhance your application or raise your grades to go into other health professions. Check what classes are taken in the first year of dental school and see if they are the same as those in the post bac program. You can also PM Maishaldan, since he has completed the program.
I think they ask you to retake the mcat only if you want to be guaranteed an interview at lecom, which you wont be needing.

Two of you PM'ed me questions, so I'll be answering here since their questions that I'm sure others have as well. Also, I'm including a portion of some PM's that I exchanged with students who like you were waiting to start the program this time last year.

So with your questions first:

1. Should I look into this program if I am only interested in DO schools?

The program should help you get into medschool, whether MD/DO. For those curious about allo schools; one friend of mine got into an MD school in North Dakota. IMPORTANT NOTE : Attending this program DOES NOT require you to apply to LECOM's or any other DO school. Another friend of mine applied to dental school last year.

2. How often are tests administered for each course? Are they all multiple-choice?

The first exam was given after 5 lectures, I think. After that, there is a rapid acceleration in terms of material covered in lecture as well as the number of lectures covered for each exam. You will notice this, they've got to see if you're truly medschool caliber. Yes, the test questions are all "Guess-tron" Also, the test questions are the very same ones used for the med-students; post-bacc'ers just won't get tested on the entire bank.

Now, the excerpt from a PM I sent a year ago. I guess he wanted to know my stats

I’m going to apologize ahead of time ‘cause there will be redundant info as I’ve answered similar questions in other PM’s

My MCAT score: 28O: PS: 8; VR: 11; BS: 9; WS: O. FYI: Average accepted MCAT for LECOM '08: 23.

Quote:
That was incredibly helpful. I think I'm highly leaning on going there provided they accept me. Few more q's and I think I'll be set. For the classes, I know there are several you take during the semesters, does each day have a new class or does each class have multiple lectures pertaining to different subjects? So slacks/shirt/tie but can i wear a hat..(force of habit)? Are there different ph'd professors for each subject or how does that work and do they all speak english well. ( I've had some bad experiences in undergrad ). Are laptops a great idea for the post-bac or what do you think? As far as living there do i have a good shot at securing an apartment there, preferiably at Lakeview or anywhere this late since i've heard them to be great? Aight, you've been awesome in this whole process. Take your time to answer i know your busy and I'll keep you updated with the whole lecom post-bac thing!

Exam/Lecture setup: Each lecture covers one subject only; the next nights will likely cover the same subject unless the upcoming exam will cover multiple subjects (2 at the most).

Hats: Few wore hats, you prolly could; but I doubt you'd get in the front door wearing a ballcap.

Professors: You'll get multiple profs who teach the subjects as a "team"; 3 for Micro, etc. There is only one prof in particular who will frustrate students due to his thick Iranian accent; but I'm from Cali, so accents don't phase me. Besides, he's a really nice guy and he does know his stuff, it's the delivery that could use the help

Laptops: You can live without 'em; but they're a Godsend during ridiculously boring lectures 'cause you can at least surf the web. I'd say have some kind of computer so you can get the lectures on power point; essential for anatomy in January, so if money's tight I guess you can wait.

Apartments: Lakeview is very nice and close; I would call now and check the situation. I stayed in the Vineyard Village Apts. run by the Baldwin Bros and I thought they were the absolute best. I could go on for days how I loved that place. The catch: Only 2 bedroom units available; so if you could find a roomate, cool; but I would just find a way to budget it so you could live alone. My rent: $630/mo. You don't want a bad roomie situation. I didn't have trouble securing a place, and I didn't start 'till Sept 1.

In general, LECOM is really good about ethnic diversity in their post-bacc and med-school classes

Another old PM:

Your questions:

Ability of program to get you in: Follow the suggestions I gave in the post, and you're in; plain and simple. Just about everyone in the program had lower GPA's, but that's what was so cool about LECOM; they saw potential elsewhere, and my classmates showed how good they were. Their pasts just weren't indicative of their true abilities, and it showed, 'cause we were a strong class. I would've had no problem getting in w/my 2.81 undergrad and 2.55 sci GPA, but of course, I had to rock the program (4.0 cumulative)

Exams : We had 7 exams for the first semester plus one cumulative final on each subject; it was only worth 10 percent. They were roughly every 2 weeks, so you were tested on about 5-7 lectures/exam.

Studying : The Post-bacc pace definitely ramps up as the year progresses. Lecture is only 3 hours/evening (yes, 6-9 or 5-8 PM) There's lots of time to study, just don't fall too far behind. A good idea is to keep up with the previous night's lecture before attending the next one; and prep for that night's lecture.

Dress code : Yes, you have to adhere to dress code, which really pissed me off; but what canya do?

Social life : Potential for this is enormous, so much so that a few classmates' grades suffered for it. I had an absolute blast; think about it, small class, intense situation being mutually experienced, similar goals, lots of time spent together...perfect formula.

Interaction w/first years : Absolutely, in fact, my former classmates will share some helpful advice w/the next class sometime in the beginning of the fall semester. You also got me; when you come up w/anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask.

-as I told the other person, when you come up w/more questions, shoot me a PM, it'll be my pleasure.

RIGHT. so i will not be needing to take the mcat! I am in without, and i would need to take it, I THINK< if i want a guaranteed interveiew there???

but the program sounds exciting, fun, challeneging.....still deciding if its right for me. It will def. boost your credentials if you succeed in the curriculum....

how much time do you have to sign and turn in the acceptance, anyone know? i guess i can write brian s. and ask him about my situation. :)

Some recent questions PM’ed to me; sorry about the turnaround time. Quite busy these past few days…

1. I’m definitely planning to attend the post bac program, so, when do u think we should apply to med schools? after completion of the program or during? if during, what month should we apply for fall 2007? Wouldn’t it be too late? i hope this makes sense. thanks a lot.

2. Did anyone have a job in the class? How many people were in your class? What were the demographics of the class? What holiday breaks did y'all get? About what month/date did classes end? Was there a celebration? How often did people in the class form study groups?

1. When to apply: If you want to start med-school in Fall 07, I would apply like everyone else; as early as possible. Of course, your prospective schools won’t be able to see any grades from post-bacc until around January, it’ll be up to you to inform them of this and send them your grades as soon as you finish your first semester (early Jan). As I’m no admissions authority, whether that’s too late or not is useless for me to say. However, there were quite a few of my classmates who did get acceptances at other schools through this method.

2. Employment: A few of my classmates did have jobs; I’d say there’s enough time for one, but it could get tricky in the few days before exams.

Class: There were 60 students when we started the class; with wide ethnic diversity, with some students fresh from undergrad and others that were older career changers.

Holidays: Your usual college holidays from Sept-Apr: Thanksgiving, 2-week Christmas break, President’s Day, and Good Friday. No week spring break. For the 04-05 class we finished 1st sem Dec 20th, and finished 2nd sem Apr 20th as well (I think).

Was there a celebration? Stressed out pre-meds don’t celebrate after exams that affect their passionate career aspirations…they get straight CRUNKED-UP!!!

Study groups: We had a really close group, so study groups formed immediately; in addition, the school encouraged working together by giving us two group projects; one each semester. Study groups were effective for some, but not all. How often you’ll want to meet is up to you.

You mean for fall 2007? I have no idea what would be the best thing to do, since I dont want to waste another year after post bac. So I might have to also apply during the program....perhaps after the first semester. But would that be too late? I would like to apply now, but dunno if that will be any good. :scared:

No, I meant Fall 2008...b/c I have to repeat the MCAT (and I don't think I will be taking it this August). And plus, I want my application to be turned in around the time they first start taking application (June or July 2007). What I mean is that I will start working on getting my application together during the program and turn it in during the summer.

I am assuming, since we accepted the offer to attend LECOM in the Fall, that we will eventually get some more paperwork (e.g. class schedule, school calendar, orientation info) other than housisng info. Do anybody know anything about this? Let me know if you receive any new info in the mail.

I've only received housing information, but am definitely interested in reviewing the class schedule and school calendar as well as having a heads up on orientation. Maybe some past students could enlighten us on when we can expect to receive this information? :o

I havent recieved anything either, but I think a previous student said that we should be expecting information in late-june or july. Classes start in sept, so I wouldnt expect them to send anything anytime soon.

Hi Dr.A! I'm continuing to work this summer until I move to Erie. I'm currently working as a supervisor for an HIV/AIDS case management agency. I'm taking a much needed vacation next week to visit my family in Oklahoma. Are you doing anything fun this summer? Also, have you decided on where you are going to live in Erie?

Hi Kikigirl,
What you are doing seems pretty cool. As for me, Im just enjoying the time off and relaxing since I havent had any time off since I started undergrad. But im thinking of doing more volunteering work and shadowing since I enjoy that so much. There is actually a hospital near my house where alot of lecom students are doing their residencies, and I got to meet one of them. He said that lecom is wonderful, and provides excellent education. So, I was glad to hear that. :D
Im not sure where im going to live yet. I dont know if I will be moving alone, or with my family. Its more likely that I will be moving alone, and will need a roommate, but still not sure. How about you, have you found a place yet?

No, I haven't found a place yet. I've actually never been to Erie and am just trying to do research on my own to find a safe and affordable place to rent. I've been toying around the idea of a roommate, but i'm not sure about it yet. I like the idea of rooming with someone that is responsible and goal oriented like me, but fear having a roommate that just wants to party all the time. I feel like this year will either make or break me, and I have to stay focused without any distractions. If I can find a roommate with those same qualities, then great! But if I can't, then I'll be all by my lonesome (along with my tuxedo cat) :p I noticed Dr A that you have a cat as your icon. Does this mean you like cats?

Great experience!

It has been an amazing experience. I have been with the agency for 4 years. I was a case manager for 3 of those years and then a supervisor for this last year. As I helped others in need and learned more about them, I in return helped myself and learned more about me. I have had the opportunity to see and learn a lot while assisting those inflicted with HIV/AIDS. It has been very rewarding.

I feel the same way, this year will be like a second chance. But I thought I might lose my sanity if im all alone, and also thought it would be nice to room with someone in the same program. I dont party, so you might consider me as a roommate. ;) Yes, I love cats, I have a white persian cat, although he wont be joining me to Erie since my sister wants to keep him.:(
I still havent started looking for a place, but when I visited I saw many apartment complexes within minutes to the school and are really nice, although Im worried theyre all taken by now. But Erie seems very safe, and certainly affordable. Are you planning to go for a visit?

I would like to go for a visit and I am trying to make it happen (my work schedule and finances are barriers), but I'm not sure if it will be possible. And in reference to having a roommate, I would definitely consider rooming with you. You sound like someone who is serious about school and I agree with you that it would be nice to room with someone in the same program. PM me if you would like to discuss this further. :)

On another note, what is everyone doing about health insurance? Does anyone know if the school provides a student policy and if so, what the cost is? I'm trying to budget now and not at the last minute, but it's difficult to do when I don't know my award amount nor all my expenses.

Hi Dr. A! Hope you are doing well! I haven't received anything from financial aid, but expect to soon. I went to the lecom website and logged in under the "online financial aid" link. It told me that my application is in process and that I should receive an email notice after 6-30-06 directing me on how to accept my award amount. So I will be keeping an eye out for that. Have you tried logging onto that site yet?

Ok…I’m probably slightly biased towards LECOM but this is just what I think.
I’ve never been to PCOM but when I went to LECOM I really loved it more than I expected. Contrary to what other people say on this forum, the students and staff are very friendly and seem willing to help. I like that it is small, that way you can be familiar with almost all of the students and staff. The building is nice and labs are up to date. I was also very pleased to find that Erie is very affordable and apartments are really cheap (compared to where I live at least), and its also small and very quiet which is good when you have to study. Also, LECOM’s out of state tuition is lowest of all the DO schools. One thing about LECOM’s program compared to PCOM is that they enroll less students which means more people get accepted into LECOM’s medical school the following year. I personally spoke with the director of the program, and he told me that almost everyone gets in given you do well. One thing attractive about PCOM’s program is that you can do an additional year to get a masters degree. But when I think of it, I’m not interested in a masters, I just want to get into medical school. The weather in GA is much better than in Erie in the winter, but I don’t really mind it since I’m used to lots of snow and I love cold weather. I also read on sdn that in PCOM’s program, you don’t get to do dissections in anatomy, but you do get exposed to that at LECOM. I read posts by current students saying that LECOM has a pretty high COMLEX passing rate, but didn’t hear anything about PCOM. I have a friend who graduated from LECOM and doing his residency in MI now; he told me that LECOM is a great school and provides excellent education, and I felt that he was sincere. But when it comes down to it, I’m just really comfortable with LECOM. Overall, I think their program will give you what you want out of it and take you where you want to be. I’ve done my research about PCOM’s program, but I can’t say that I know everything good and bad about it. I think the programs are very comparable, but see what’s most important to you (Location? Weather? Tuition?), and make your decision. Hope this helps. :luck:

Thank you. Although, weather is not the most important thing to me...this is still making a big difference when I think about the decision. However, I am trying to not let this be a deciding factor, especially since I stayed in Pittsburgh last year. If you get any more info on either school that may help guide my decision, please let me know. Thanks again!

Invest in some good boots to be able to walk in the snow without getting snow in your shoes. Gloves are a must if you have to remove the snow on your car every morning, or else your hands will freeze by the time you are done. A scarf and a hat to cover your ears would be good too. Welcome to below zero weather. :D

I only saw on a really old thread to call the school would be the best option. Nothing else really. I guess you could wait to get up here to get your winter clothing. You should have no problem finding what you're looking for.
As for housing, the packet they sent is pretty useful. Also, if you've been getting emails from other post bac students, one person sent out an email with lots of useful info about apartments. She went to Erie to take a look at places and gave her opinion on each one. If you'd like me to forward you the info, PM your email address. :luck:

They also only offer PBL so hopefully I will be good at that during the post bac, that will be a determining factor whether or not I apply there.

Hi everyone,

I just recieved the orientation schedule in the mail. Our first day is Sept. 5th :D
Seems like classes will be 5:00 to 8:00pm.

So will orientation be the first day of class? How long after you sent your Yes letter?
Hey does anyone have AIM? We can try and setup a chat to talk about orientation?

If you want information about the LECOM post bac program, you should email the program coordinator at postbac AT lecom DOT edu. He can give you info on stuff like the class schedule, application to the DO school, etc.

Im not sure what you mean by "forms of financial aid." So far, I filled out the fafsa. Im still waiting for that to be processed (since I just sent in my tax return) before I will recieve anything from LECOM. What other paperwork is there?

Yes, there will be orientation from 1:00 to 5:00 on Sept 5th, then classes begin at 5:00pm the same day. Our first class is Intro to Osteopathic Med. Orientation continues the next day from 2:00 to 4:00, in which you can bring your family and friends, then classes continue at 5:00pm (Cell Biology & Genetics). Im starting to get nervous. :scared:
I sent in my "yes letter" sometime in April. My guess would be that you will recieve all your info within a couple of weeks.

Good question. I've been wondering the same thing. Well, as it is considered an undergraduate program, we may be eligible for federal grants. However, I thought that non-degree programs are not awarded grants, but you may still be able to take out loans (Im not 100% sure about this). In my case, I maxed out on undergraduate federal loans, since I am still considered a dependent student (under the age of 24), so my only other option is private loans. I emailed LECOM's financial aid office with questions about this a while back, yet I never heard back. Perhaps I should try again.

Yes I am. I asked Brian S. about when would be the best time to apply to LECOM, and he suggested to submit sometime before November. However, I still think its best to submit as early as possible. I dont know if this is the best way to go, but I'd hate to waste yet another year if there is a chance that I might get in right after post bac. I could always reapply if things dont work out.
What are you planning to do?

Hey everyone! Just checking in to say hi. I've been extremely busy lately with work and moving around from place to place. I can't wait to get some stability back, which will be when I finally move to Erie and then when we start school. I'm a little concerned that I haven't received the orientation or class schedule information yet, nor anything pertaining to my financial aid amount. If I don't receive anything by the end of the week, I'll probably give the school a call. (I just hate being a pest.) :o Did you guys ever get a chat going? I'll touch base with everyone later in the week. I'm getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow and will be out of it for awhile. :( Take care everyone and have a great week!

1. http://www.rentalguideerie.com/ = Very helpful website to find housing, LECOM will also send you a housing packet and a list of people looking for roommates that you can contact.

2. Sept. 5th (also the first day of classes) and 6th

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say congrats to everyone that will be heading to erie for fall 06.

I am a perspective applicant to the biomed program, and I was wondering what the deal is with MCAT scores. I realize that the website states that applicants with below a score of 20 will not be considered. However, I am planning to take the MCAT in April for the first time, is it possible to apply before april and get an acceptance pending my mcat scores (for fall 07)? How strict are they about the MCAT requirement? Anyone with below a 20 Mcat get in or no mcat at all? I realize these questions are personal so please IM if you prefer.

I'm sorry for going off topic, but any help you all can give me from your experiences would be great.

Thank you.

I think that they are pretty strict about the MCAT score being above a 20. You can apply before you take the MCAT, but they might just wait for your score before they make a decision. Besides, the deadline is in August, so you can apply after you get your score. :luck:

I'll be movin into the Winchester apartments (W54th St.) on Friday (Sept 1st). I won't have internet from the 1st thru the 5th so whatever you all decide on doing, just call me and keep me informed. As for my input, I am fine with either of kikigirl's suggestions.

So how is everyone finding the LECOM biomed. program?

Give us prospective applicants some insight.

Thank you.

So far, the program has been great. I am very glad I chose to come here. I think LECOM's postbac is a hidden gem, at least for now. It will get more and more competitive every year. So, if you're interested, apply asap. This is a no-lag(for most) year program. If you do well, you're admitted the following fall for med school. If DO is what you want, look no further. This program can work for preMD's, but I think Georgetown SMP or BU MAMS are better suited for MD applicants.

As far as DO or PharmD (LECOM also has pharmD postbac), this is a great program.

If you have any questions, pm me. I will answer them.

The program is great so far. It runs at a very good pace to prepare for med school. As long as you can maintain a 3.0 and get at least a 20 on your MCAT, you are pretty much guarenteed a seat for next year's DO class. The professors are wonderful and treat us like medical students. Hope this helps you out!

How was everyone's first semester? Harder than you thought? Easier than you thought?

Does anyone know if LECOM-Bradenton has a postbac program. I looked on the website but didn't see anything. Thanks.

Hey peepo

For the Postbacc Program would it be better to send a Committee Letter or just a science professor's letter of recommendation? I am asking this because in the application it didn't say anything about possibly sending a Committe Letter.

Thanks

All I sent was a science professor letter; although a committee letter would probably be acceptable as long as it addressed your capability to perform well in the post-bac program. To be sure, you can call Brian at the school. He's your go to man for the program and is super awesome. Good Luck!

I don't believe that they do. You can call the school for clarification, but I'm pretty sure that they don't.

The first semester was pretty much exactly what I thought....a lot of studying to prove yourself, but it was "doable" and it has certainly prepared me for med school. I don't regret it at all.

The Bradenton campus does not have a post bac class as of yet. In fact, many of our students here for this year's post bac are from FL.

It doesn't matter if you have a committee letter or a regular science professor's letter. To be honest, most sincere committees won't write you a letter if you don't have a strong MCAT or GPA, and more than likely if you are applying to post bac, you had issues with getting into med school.(I know I did) I had a letter from my physiology professor and my microbiology professor and had no trouble whatsoever getting accepted into postbac. The truth is, they are quite lenient on the students they accept. They really do want everyone to succeed and be in a medical school somewhere! Don't sweat about the post-bac. But once you are here you will want to study and work as hard as possible to prove yourself to the school. As far as the curriculum and studying, I had no trouble at all. Did I study?... YES. Did I study a lot?... YES. But i only did so for re-inforcement to insure that I got the grades that I wanted. If you had a strong bio background in undergrad and you had over a 3.5, you should be set for the program. And yes, this will prepare you nicely for your first part of the first semester of MS1.

If anyone has any other questions, send a private message because I rarely check this thread anymore. Good Luck everyone!

Thanks for the infos. How would an applicant find out about the status of his application and if he is missing anything for the program. I have been sending a few emails without any reply.

thanks

Hello all. I am currently applying to the Postbac at LECOM. Does anyone know how long it takes for a descision to be made? I also have trouble getting LECOM to reply to my emails.

It took them about 6 weeks to accept me. I sent my app in toward the end of February and I was notified of the acceptance on the 14th of April. If you want to find anything out about post bac, address your e-mails to Brian Simmonsen (just search the LECOM website for that name and u will get his e-mail address). When I e-mail him now, I get a response back in minutes. If you address it to the postbac address, he responds, but no where near as quickly. Learn to trust Brian as he will be your best friend and resource through post bac. Any other questions, just let us know!

Hi everyone!

I have a few questions for you:
-are the lecom postbac courses at graduate level?
-would you recommend the program for someone trying to get into dental school only? I am contacting the admissions office to see if they can consider my DAT scores instead of the MCAT ones.
-is the program only for students with no Bachelors of Science (with little upper level science courses), or can someone with a Bachelors of Science apply to the program as well?

Thanks everyone :D

The courses are actually almost the same as the courses that the first year medical students take, yet it is considered an undergraduate post-bac program.

I am in this year's class and we actually have a few pre-dental students in our class now.

The program is actually meant for people who already have all the requirements for medical school, but need to show improvement academically to make up for a low GPA or low MCAT score.

Any other questions, feel free to PM me.

Hey, if anyone is still looking for a place to live, I have a friend who is looking for a roommate. She was a former LECOM PostBac '08 student accepted into this September's incoming Pharmacy class who is looking to share a large 2 bedroom townhouse, located about 9 miles from school near the lake. It has a 2 car garage (you're going to want it come winter) and full basement for storage. If you are a non-smoker, ok with pets, and would be interested in more details, send me a message and I will get you in contact with her.
