Any idea what is considered a disadvantaged underrepresented minority? I'm half Costa Rican and half Guatemalan. Does this count as Mexican-American you think??

Thanks!

Its not where your from but what your heritage is, if youre a white Coasta Rican/Guatemalan registering as a URM might back fire (because if you look white the comittee is going to start asking questions about you.) However if there is any native blood in you you are 100% a URM.

According to the AAMC you are not a URM. You have to be Mexican or mainland puerto rican. You can only count as Mexican American if you are "MEXICAN" . You can apply as economically disadvantaged if you are poor though. If you apply as mexican then they find out you are something else, they might see you as being dishonest. It is lame how they catorgorize some hispanics as URMs and others as non URMs. I don't know if medical schools really distinguish between whether you are cuban, mexican, etc. If you feel that you are disadvantaged in any way (non native speaker, being economically, and/or educationally disadvantaged) you should definetly discuss it in your personal statement. I heard that the AAMC might have changed their policy distinguishing who gets URM status as those that are underrepresented in medicine (whatever that means). I would call the schools that you are looking at and ask them. Good Luck!

The official AAMC definition reads:

"Underrepresented in medicine means those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population."

According to this definition, it's hopefully clearer to see why some Hispanics are considered URM and some are not; some are over-represented in the population while being underrepresented in medicine, and some are not.

To the OP: Last I heard, Guatemala and Costa Rica were not Mexico. So by the definition I probably wouldn't classify you as URM.
